5 December 1518

Musical Accompaniment

Born in 1440 to Antonio Trivulzio and Francesca Visconti, minor Guelph nobles in Milan, Gian Giacomo Trivulzio was raised alongside Galeazzo Maria Sforza, and would spend much of his early life in his service.
His military career started in 1465, when at the age of 25 he accompanied Sforza's army to France, where they would fight on the side of King Louis XI against the League of Public Weal. This taste of blood was evidently rather satisfactory for Trivulzio, as he would spend the remainder of his life in military service.

Sforza and Montefeltro Service

In the 1460s, he fought in the service of the Sforzas against the famous Bartolomeo Colleoni - one of the greatest military minds of the 15th Century. Soon after, he moves to the service of Federico da Montefeltro, and fights in the infamous Battle of Riccardina, where the forces of Colleoni, Ercole d'Este, and Alessandro Sforza, as well as some Florentine families, faced off against an alliance of the Medicis, King Ferdinand I of Naples, and Federico da Montefeltro.
It is in this period that he marries his first wife, Margherita Colleoni - a distant relative of the famous Condottiero.

Condottiero

In 1478, he entered the service of the Medicis against the expansionist Pope Sixtus IV, defending the city of Florence in the wake of the Pazzi Conspiracy, until the Ottoman capture of Otranto forced a peace settlement.
In 1480, he purchased the castle of Mesocco. By 1496 the surrounding countryside will have joined the Three Leagues in Switzerland, by his permission.

Rossi War and Ludovico Sforza

In 1482, he enters the service of Ludovico Sforza, against the Rossi family of Parma, in rebellion against the Sforzas of Milan. As tensions built up between Ludovico Sforza - then Regent of Milan - and the other nobles of Milan, it was Trivulzio - then only a lieutenant to Costanza Sforza - who was entrusted with taking Parma. Trivulzio proved himself incredibly capable in the art of siege and harrying, devastating the lands loyal to the Rossi, and capturing alpine fortresses with great vigor. Making excellent headway, it was only the intervention of the Republic of Venice that stopped Trivulzio. His soldiers were transferred to the command of the Duke of Urbino - an old employer, Federico da Montefeltro. Eventually, Trivulzio would work his way to being the primary commander of Ludovico's forces in Milan, winning the war for the Milanese, defeating the Venetian army at Martinengo, and becoming Governor of Parma for the Sforzas.
His first wife died in 1485. She had given him one surviving son - Gian Niccolò Trivulzio, and a score of daughters.

Neapolitan Service

In 1488, he moves to Naples, and enters the service of Alfonso d'Aragon, Duke of Calabria. He would marry Beatrice d'Avalos, and would be appointed Commander of the army of Naples. It is in this period that Charles VIII invades Italy, after being invited into Milan by Ludovico Sforza.

Charles' War for Naples First Italian War (1494-1498)

Musical Accompaniment

In 1494, Trivulzio negotiated the surrender of Naples to Charles VIII, who, impressed by the man, hires him into French service, with the written permission of Ferdinand I of Naples. In 1495 he fought in the Battle of Fornovo in the service of the King of France, marching back to France with the army. He is appointed Marshal of France for his actions in the battle.

Second Italian War (1498-1503)

In 1498 Trivulzio was placed in charge of a large army by the new King Louis XII. He marched on Milan, and chased Ludovico Sforza, now Duke of Milan, to Innsbruck, where he bid the assistance of Maximilian of Austria.
In October 1499, Trivulzio entered Milan, and was appointed Governor.
In 1501, Trivulzio was again placed in charge of a French army - this time, he was intended to be in command of small contingents of French troops to hold river crossings. Instead, he found himself in the midst of the French Army in their victory at Gorgonzola. The French - employing great numbers of Swiss mercenaries, defeated an Imperial army marching alongside Ludovico Sforza.
In 1502, Trivulzio commanded the French army at (the later named First Battle of) San Martino, buying valuable time for the French to bring reinforcements across the alpine passes after the Fall of Savoy and save Milan from the Imperial incursions. Later in the year he would lead the French at Marzaglia, being bested by Cesare Borgia, and withdrawing to Reggio.
In 1503, Trivulzio commanded the French army at Monterosi, squaring off against the Spanish Army, with the Fate of the Eternal City at stake. Routing the Spanish, he drove south to the banks of the Garigliano River, before being finally stopped, not by the Spanish, but by his own supply lines.

War of the Second Italic League Third Italian War (1506-1509)

In 1506 Trivulzio commanded the French Army putting Modena to siege, taking it in early 1507. Having kicked a hornet's nest, Trivulzio was forced to withdraw from Modena, though stood up a valiant defence against a Venetian-Ferrarese army at Lodi.
With Milan in rebellion (in part to Trivulzio's poor governance), he withdrew from Milan, and met with the main French army in Novara.
In 1508 Trivulzio spearheaded the counterattack into Milan, which was then in Austrian hands. Crossing the Ticino, he met the main army under Georg von Frundsberg at Borgarello. Bloodying the Austrians, he forces them to withdraw, and is joined by Rohan-Gie and Trémoille, to defeat the Austrians and Venetians at the absolutely gargantuan Battle of Gaggiano. With the Austrians and Venetians defeated, Trivulzio set about restoring order to Milan. It is said that he attempted to put a stop to the worst of the sacking, but it is rather suspicious that most of the sacking hit the worst of the Ghibelline sections of the Duchy...
In 1509 Trivulzio oversaw the capture of Montferrat, and its subsequent integration into the Duchy of Milan.

Borgia War (1511-1512)

In 1511, following Cesare's attempt at seizing Rome and subsequent flight to Romagna, Trivulzio leads a Milanese army to the Romagna, where they put down Cesare Borgia alongside a Papal coalition by 1512. It was in this war that his son, Gian Niccolò passed - camp fever had taken him during a siege.

Francis' War for Naples Fourth Italian War (1512-1515)

Musical Accompaniment

With the betrayal of the Spanish, and the commencement of Francis' War for Naples, Trivulzio commanded a rear force in the siege of Pescara. With the fall of that city in 1513, he lead a supporting force to Francis, proving to be a mentor and moderating voice to the rapacious young Duc de Valois.

Lombard War Fifth Italian War (1515-1516)

By 1515, the French army in Naples was exhausted, and saw fit to retire north, as the Emperor had made a pact with the Venetians, and invaded Milan. Trivulzio fought a rearguard action against the Spanish, allowing the Duc de Valois to pursue a stunning victory against the Austrians and Venetians at Lodi, and yet again routing Maximilian and the Venetians from the Duchy of Milan.

Trivulzio's final actions came in 1516, where he took over the command of the army from the gravely wounded Duc de Nemours, and proceeded to assist in the seizure of Venetian Lombardy, and the subsequent Second Battle of San Martino.

Retirement

Tired and contented, Trivulzio passes in his bed in the Castello Sforzecco on the 5th of December, 1518. He was 78 years of age. He is succeeded by his grandson, Gian Francesco Trivulzio.
It is said that Giangiacomo requested to be buried with a sword on his chest, instead of a cross. When asked why, he answered, "To scare the devils when they come for me."

The ghost signal.
It had started as faint readings that rapidly spread across the entirety of know space, manifesting as a sort of white noise in the background of Federation communications and networks, so weak it could only be picked up by our strongest equipment, and even then it was so barely noticeable that for decades most had written it off as a simple statistical error or calibration issue. Until we noticed it was getting louder. Wherever we went it was always there, as if it were not a signal but rather a reading we were unintentionally picking up, one that had been getting stronger from the moment it had appeared. The signal that over a century ago could only be picked up by the strongest of our communications arrays, was starting to now impact those same arrays, and not just that, but even innocuous things like holopads and other civilian equipment had begun to malfunction at a much higher rate.
At this point the idea of it being a mere software glitch or hardware issue had been long since thrown out, not a single software update, code rewrite, or hardware swap had done a single thing to solve the mystery. But it was ever so slightly stronger in some sectors than others, and with the signals ever increasing strength we have finally been able to tell the relative difference in strength from one sector to another. Now the most concerning thing to me was that the signal was strongest nearest to Venlil Prime.
To say this revelation was worrying would be beyond an understatement, both to our own people and the wider Federation, we sit on both the border with the Arxur and unknown space, the idea that this wasn’t an anomaly but rather an attack or weapon caused even greater panic than we had ever seen before.
If this was the Arxur that would mean that they are in possession of a weapon that could have the potential to cripple our ships and communications, leaving worlds defenseless and unable to even call for help, serving our worlds to them on a platter without even a single shot fired in defense. The idea alone keeps me awake at night, thinking that we could be at the complete mercy of another who would see us dead or enslaved.
However the second option was somehow just as frightening. If it’s not the Arxur, then what is it? Where is it coming from? Is it even coming from a single place? Though I guess that last question did have some kind of answer. A few [years] back the readings spiked to unprecedented levels, causing mass electronic malfunctions across the entire federation before falling back down to a steady level, albeit much higher than ever before. However this time instead of seemingly appearing all at once, the spike seemed to rapidly cascade across space, and by mapping out the miniscule differences in time we could gain a general direction of its source, and that source was far out beyond any known space of both the Arxur and Federation.
Well I guess that’s why I'm here. Or rather why all of us are all the way out here in what might as well be the middle of nowhere on the edge of Venlil space, chasing this ghost signal to find its source, failing that, finding out what it really is.
I don’t like being out here, I don't think any of us do. I don’t know why, but I feel like the longer I stay out here, the more I feel like… like we’re being watched. The further we go into the outer territories the more uneasy I start to feel, and from what I’ve overheard from the rest of the crew, I’m not the only one. Honestly I’d rather be back home right now, the longer I stay out here the worse and worse it's been getting.
I’ve been having… nightmares. Recurring ones, for [months] now. Worlds burning, their surfaces charred and cracked like charcoal, the surface scarred with a symbol glowing a burning red. A five pointed star sitting inside a circle. Each time I fall asleep it’s a different world, Venlil Prime, The Cradle, Mileau, Nishtal, Aafa. I don’t know how I know what world I see given the destruction, it’s like there’s some knowledge planted in the back of my mind telling me what I’m being forced to look at. I wish it ended there, but every time, after witnessing worlds burn, I'm forced down into a ship or put on the surface.
Usually nightmares come from some experience in the real world, an Arxur raid, a predator attack, or simply a horrible accident. I had never thought that a nightmare itself could be a direct source of fear. But those… things, defied all logic. How could life ever evolve on any world to end up like… that, ignoring how such creatures could even develop any technology at all, somehow being more brutal than even the Arxur have ever been, if such an idea was even possible. Every night I am haunted by creatures tearing people apart, worlds burning, and red ships descending on whatever remains.
I’ve obviously developed some form of predator disease, that's the only explanation for why my mind has been spiraling down and down all these [months]. Only the deranged mind of a predator would be consumed by thoughts of nothing but death and destruction night after night. Sometimes when we jump into subspace I swear I can hear whispers. And now I know I’m going crazy because, well, when I look at the ship diagnostics it almost looks like something is shaking the ship while in subspace. Some of our fleet look like they have emerged from subspace with damage to the hull. It’s progressed so far I’m hallucinating.
The impact this has had on my mind has been steadily deteriorating my performance and I’m worried that someone will find out. If that happens I'll lose everything, my life, my herd, my family. Luckily nobody seems to have noticed yet. Still I wonder how long I can keep this ruse going, how long I can convince everyone I’m a normal person.
“Vikam, Anything to report?” The captain of the ‘Steady River’ asked me as he entered the bridge, probably having just woken up given his general lack of tidiness.
“Nothing unusual captain, readings here are only marginally higher, less than point-seven percent, however our long range scanners have picked up surges coming from this system here.” I projected the star map to the captain's display, showing an area several systems away where we had detected a similar pulse to the one from [years] ago, albeit much, much smaller.
“How long ago was this?” The captain perked up near instantly.
“Just over a claw ago it seems.” Apparently this set him off.
“What!? And you didn’t tell me!? If we finally have a solid location on these readings we need to investigate immediately!” One of the techs on the bridge spoke up after the captains’ outburst.
“Umm sir, what if it is the Arxur?”
“If it is, don't you think we need to know!? That’s the entire point of this expedition! Vikam, tell the fleet to prepare to jump. If it is the Arxur, we need to arrive simultaneously so we aren’t sitting alone without help.” The captain gave his orders and I obeyed, coordinating with the other capital ships of the fleet to act as anchors for the smaller ships to follow into subspace.
Our ‘exploration’ fleet was little more than a bunch of warships with science equipment strapped to them. Over 1200 ships split into four search groups, some splitting even further beyond that, would all now reconvene and jump to this system, if it was the Arxur we would need every ship available to beat them back and hopefully capture whatever technology was causing this. Personally I scoffed at the idea that the Arxur could come up with anything that could do this, I doubt they even have the capability of inventing things beyond new torture methods, considering everything they have was given to them. It doesn’t matter, our fleet was reinforced with some of the newest and strongest ships we could build, the Steady River is of a new ‘Heavy Cruiser’ pattern, a fresh off the line Farsul ship with enough armor to take on any Arxur vessel and measuring in at a massive [800 meters]! And we managed to negotiate to buy four of them! And received eight more directly from the Farsul navy! Combining them with the other ships sent as part of the combined search effort, our fleet had 26 capital ships and over 500 cruisers, with the rest of the fleet being filled in by bombers, frigates, corvettes, and patrol craft. I’m pretty confident we can take a few savage reptiles.
“All sub-fleets present, preparing for subspace jump.” a voice called out somewhere on the other side of the bridge as I double checked the fleet registry, ensuring all ships were accounted for and properly linking with their respective capital ships for the aforementioned jump. I began the countdown.
“Synchronization complete, subspace drive spooling up… Preparing to jump in three… two... one… Now.” The stars visible from the viewports rapidly shifted from white to blue, to purple, and then vanished as we entered subspace and the bridge was bathed in light blue.
“All ships have successfully jumped and are in formation. We will arrive at our destination shortly.” I gave a quick update before the tech from before spoke up again.
“Captain, should we prepare for the possibility of the grays showing up?”
“Mm… Yes, pre-charge our weapons and have the crews on alert before we re-enter realspace.”
Uhh, I’m not so sure about that. “Sir, is it wise to jump into an unknown situation with our fleet prepared to attack? There’s still a possibility that an entirely unknown party is responsible for the readings, and to be honest I don’t believe the Arxur are capable of such a thing as this. If they could cripple the entire Federation at once wouldn’t we already be dead?”
“And you’d rather us go in completely undefended? If it’s the grays then we’ll be ready and with greater numbers, if it’s an uncontacted species then they need to be warned of the Arxur and join the Federation as soon as possible, and if it’s simply a natural anomaly, then our actions don’t matter. I’d rather be prepared than caught off guard and served on a plate to those savages, if they even know what plates are.” The captain half ranted towards the crew. Once again the tech from before interjected just as I was going to offer my counterpoints.
“S-sir, what if it's another pred-” he was cut off by the captain laughing.
“It’s what? Other predators? Ha! Need I remind you that not a single predator has ever made it beyond their world without our help. Now tell the weapon crews to be ready.”
I don’t know if it’s my lack of decent sleep, but it almost seems like the captain has been becoming just as irritable and out of it as I am, becoming more and more paranoid about being attacked, and keeping the sensor and weapon crews on near constant alert when searching through systems and the occasional asteroid field.
I switched one of my displays to check our progress, and just as we passed the three quarter mark something strange started to happen.
Shaking. The ship was shaking. And not just a little, it feels like I’m in an atmospheric craft going through a storm but… but this shouldn’t even be possible! Not in space and definitely not in subspace, there’s no precedent for this! There’s no such thing as turbulence in space! I slammed my paw down onto the touchscreen, hoping I hit the right button and rejoicing that I did when the ship's alarm blared and the brace warning went to all compartments. Worse still, it’s not just us.
According to what I’m seeing in the fleet communications, every single ship was experiencing the same instability we were. Some of the smaller ships were taking it so bad that they collided with each other due to the tight formation we flew in, the now wrecks instantly vanishing from subspace in a flash and becoming little more than shrapnel flying through realspace. Is this some kind of attack? People have theorized about subspace weapons but they’ve never gone beyond theories and imagination. What is going on!? If this continues we won’t have a fleet left by the time we arrive!
“S-sir we have to exit subspace right now! Our fleet is literally being torn apart!” I tried to plead with the captain but-
“No! Keep going! Tell all vessels to de-sync from their capital ships and distance themselves, even if it means we have staggered arrivals! We haven’t come all this way just to stop now!”
He’s gone insane, but I transmitted his order. Evidently all the fleet captains had agreed to this as our entire fleet de-synced from each other, but not before we lost several more ships in the process. Many had collided like the unfortunate ones before, and some simply dropped from subspace without any notice, if this was intentional or not I can’t say, but it’s entirely possible whatever is causing this forced them to do so, seeing as our own subspace drive was being pushed to its limits.
I could do nothing but squeeze my eyes shut and push myself as far back into my chair as I could, waiting for this to be over. I couldn’t see it, but I could hear the panic around me as I could imagine everyone else was having a similar response.
A bright flash of white and blue, and then…
Nothing.
Slowly I opened my eyes and saw my computer displaying a message stating our arrival at our destination and the pings indicating the arrival of the others. Raising my head slightly I looked around the bridge and out the viewports. The still panicking crew, the captain heavily breathing and leaning back with his eyes closed, the systems dual stare-
Wait, no. This system is only supposed to have one star, every single scan and map has this system as having a single star. But there, a second one stood, much smaller than the first, and… it looked… wrong. Just wrong. Instead of burning it looked like it was boiling, and had tendrils of red energy splitting off of it, with two much larger ones coming from opposite ends, splitting the void around it in two. I was so caught up in the sight of it, I barely noticed the rest of the fleet arriving, or what’s left of it. We lost over two hundred ships just getting here, either destroyed or dropped out of subspace before arriving.
“What is… what am I looking at here?” The captain, now sitting up straight, spoke everyone's thoughts out loud. “Scan that immediately!”
It’s obvious we’ve found the source of the ghost signal, however being so close to it meant that our equipment which was barely working in the first place, now struggled to even look at that… thing.
Well at least I know my initial judgment was wrong, the anomaly wasn’t a star, or even the size of one, rather it was the size of a small moon. Our sensors mistook it for a star, as it had the full output of one. This relatively tiny object in space was emitting a higher level of energy than the system's own star, but none of the sensors could make any sense of what it was or even the type of energy it was emitting, every sensor we pointed at it was overloaded with errors, but… there were objects… coming through the anomaly.
“Sir I c-can- we can’t make any sense of… what this-” I tried to give some explanation but was cut off by the sensors giving off a very different alert, ship detections, thousands of them. Tens of thousands of them. “C-captain I-I’m picking up something, there’s ships coming f-from that… that thing!”
The entire bridge scrambled to get the equipment back in order as everyone wanted to know what was going on, how anything could survive being near the anomaly that nearly fried our systems, never mind coming directly out of it. Was it even an anomaly in the first place? Had we come across some race that was so advanced that they could literally tear reality as a means of travel? Was our inability to scan it merely a by-product or intentional design? Whatever it was, the energy used was like nothing we had ever seen, or even theorized of.
I pulled up as many sensors and screens as I could to get a look at those ships and-
My heart almost stopped.
I could hear nothing but ringing and my ever increasing heart beat. I feel freezing cold and burning hot all at once. I sunk my claws into my left arm to check I’m not still in a nightmare, I wish I was, but this is real.
All of those ships are real.
Red ships.
Those things, pulled straight from my nightmares, were now bearing down on us. I could do nothing but stare in frozen horror as the automated reports indicated over three thousand ships headed to our direct position. I could do nothing as that same red energy effortlessly lanced through our ships, tearing our already loose formation apart. I could do nothing as every ship fired back in panic, the interference preventing mass communication as the fleet desperately tried to return fire. I could do nothing as-
As a green light quickly overcame the visual sensors, and just as quickly left. The ship I was watching returned to view, now a gutted lifeless wreck, burning green from the inside out. Its strange tentacles that sprouted from the bottom now limply floating in the void alongside the shattered pieces of what remained.
What. Was. That.
The interference must have been greater than I thought, because those red ships were not the only thing out there. Scanning the system as fast as I could, I saw other ships on the other side, facing the anomaly, not the same sinister red, but a pale gray. Massive ships that dwarfed all but the most gargantuan of the crimson attackers. By the stars, even the smallest of those ships was almost as big as a standard cruiser! And those capital ships… they must be at least [2000 meters]!
I would’ve asked why any sane race would build such things, but those red ships varied in size so greatly that many surpassed the gray behemoths, sometimes even more than twice over!
That knocked me out of my stupor, the pale behemoths were holding off tens out thousands of vessels whilst our scanners indicated they possessed a mere five thousand, each firing off green and blue beams alongside endless swarms of missiles and kinetic fire so numerous the red ships couldn’t physically evade.
Plasma and kinetics I understand, although strange that it was bright blue and not the standard white, but that green energy was just as unknowable as the red coming from the anomaly and those damnable nightmare ships. Even their missiles detonated with pulses of green instead of the anti-matter design used by every known race.
What had we walked in on? We had just barged into two forces engaged in one of the largest battles in history, using completely unknown technology, and now one side was protecting us, or at the very least, attacking our attackers.
My hearing was finally coming back to me. “W-WE CAN’T REFORM! FLEET COMMUNICATIONS ARE OVERLOADED!” A tech screamed, a response to an order from the captain I hadn’t heard. Everyone was screaming, the bridge was in utter chaos, and the rest of the fleet was faring no better, hundreds already lost, our fighters and bombers were easily picked off by those cross-ships, and we couldn’t even communicate with how overworked our ship systems were directly after that horrid jump.
We could do little to save ourselves. But there were others who could, and were seemingly setting out to do just that.
Green and blue bolts began to mesh with our white plasma, part of that pale fleet had broken off and were assaulting the red fleet from our right flank, creating a cross of fire, though it was plainly evident that these unknown people were doing most of the work, as our shots went wide or failed to strike through the enemies shields and flowed off their armor like water. Our only true success was taking down those fighters, and a few groups having an unspoken agreement to collectively target some of the relatively smaller enemy vessels, finally destroying them after putting dozens of shots through their thick armor, creating a mosaic of burning dots.
We had no time to cheer, a few dozen out of thousands didn’t mean anything, even with the encroaching pale fleet doing most of the work, fortunately this also meant that the unknown predators started focusing their efforts on them instead of us, giving our ships a small reprieve.
A voice rose above the cacophony of mayhem in the bridge “Sir there’s something coming through comms!” What? I thought-
“I THOUGHT YOU SAID COMMS WERE OFFLINE!?” Exactly what I was thinking, though with less screaming involved.
“They were, but-” He was cut off as static overpowered every noise in the bridge, my console indicating it was a message being broadcasted from the pale fleet. An incredibly distorted voice was barely heard through the static.
“Unknown fl_________re in gr___ danger _____ reactiv________ Anima Fie_______ re-r____ to Al___ Centa___ im___iately. If you __________ any lon____ you___________ apart.”
Alongside the near indecipherable broadcast, came a packet of data that was so heavily encrypted that I don’t think an entire planet's worth of computers trying to decode it could do so in anything less than a decade, but even so, the message was clear, or maybe it’s just what I wanted to hear. Leave.
The pale fleet was now sitting between the red fleet and us, firing off massive energy beams from what I can only assume are spinal cannons like our own, only these ones were shredding through the predators en masse. Now that they were much closer, the pale ships began firing green orbs, moving slower than the beams, but whenever they neared a foe, green arcs of energy shot out and scorched anything they touched, before the orb detonated in a flash of light, sending out one last pulse of lightning to destroy whatever it could before vanishing.
We had little time to admire the artistry and effectiveness of these strange weapons, with the pressure now off our own fleet, every ship began to prepare to jump back to a predetermined fall back point.
Wait- no! That’s insane! We’ll never survive jumping back into subspace!
But it was too late for me to voice my objections, white became blue, blue became purple, and the stars disappeared as we jumped back into the azure abyss that would surely be our death.

Aaaaannnndd with ten pages, 4000 words, the first chapter is done!
Thank you to everyone who voted in the poll, and I hope this chapter meets your expectations for an intro to Argent Earth, with our first character being just a little guy who’s being endlessly tormented by nightmares now brought to life. Someone get this man a donut.
We see some new Federation ships and an exploration fleet coming up against forces beyond their understanding, and our first look at the ARC navy.
Now for some clarification in case someone didn’t get it so I don’t have to reply in the comments:
The ghost signal - not a real signal, demonic energy interferes with technology but they don’t know that. It’s the interference they’re picking up, which has been slowly increasing as the veil thins and rifts are made. Also a Stellaris reference.
Turbulence - The ‘turbulence’ was their ship's subspace drives and systems malfunctioning because they essentially jumped right on top of a rift without any kind of shielding. To put it in 40K terms, they basically jumped into a warp storm without a gellar field, and got off real lucky.
Demon proof your tech kids. Though that can be hard if you don’t know they exist.

2023.05.28 06:11 onebuddyforlife Reincarnated Into Another World As A Dicemaster Prologue

I rested my chin on the palm of my hand, overlooking the serene, green scenery of the rice fields outside of my classroom. The mountains stood tall and unmoving from afar, dividing the clouds that pass through its summit. I sigh in relaxation, appreciating the peaceful surroundings that one cannot find in the cities.
I snapped out of my quiet trance as a small truck carrying hay passed by the road, and I once again noticed the faint yet consistent mashes of buttons coming from my only friend in the province. Since our teacher announced that she had to leave class early, leaving us in class for the rest of our last period today, my friend over to my right has been playing the newly released game nonstop. The new MMORPG game, Alterra.
My blonde-haired friend Hirato was playing on a portable gaming console. His back has been arched towards the console for the past 15 minutes, his eyes are practically glued to the console’s screen. I inched my seat toward him to take a closer look. He was trying to defeat a monster resembling a three-headed snake—a Hydra. His character’s health was one hit away from hitting zero, but the Hydra was practically undamaged.
“Hey, Hirato,” I called him. “How long are you going to play that game?”
“Awww, I died!” He says exasperatedly, leaning back on his chair in annoyance. “I’ve been trying to beat this boss since yesterday and there’s no luck at all! I even have my gear maxed out for this level, and still...”
Hirato continued speaking as he packed his console into his backpack, “I wouldn’t have any problem at all had you continued playing video games with me. You could help me beat the boss, you know."
Then, Hirato started to make some "drama" in a weird, playful manner. "Come on, Naruki! We were best buddies since we were kids! Whatever must have happened between us, my best friend?” The bell rings across the school building, indicating the end of classes for the day. At the same time, I made a disgusted look at him after saying something corny that must have come from some TV show.
“Stop it with that little skit of yours. We are still best buddies, but I’ve grown up from playing games. Remember, we’re going to college next year and I’ve been preparing for it ever since.” I grabbed my bag from beneath my seat, and just as I stood up, the wooden plank I stood on creaked.
"That's not true, and there's no way you'll pass up on an MMORPG like Alterra! There's no way you stopped playing just for college." Hirato claimed, but he quickly switched into a pondering tone. “Though you made me think about college. You want to go to Tokyo University from what I recall, but I thought you were tired of the city because it’s too crowded there?” He asked.
“It’ll give me a greater chance to get hired for a job with a high salary. My dad also said that it takes some time to get used to the city when I’ve been living all my life in the rice fields.” I ignored Hirato's first statement--but it's true. There's no way I can quit gaming, so I lied to him about it, but I also don't want to take precious time off when I'm studying for a test that will literally decide my future.
“You’re already thinking of your future far ahead.”
“Well, do you want to stay in this school?”
As I took another step towards the door, the wood plank creaked again, filling the short silence in Hirato’s pause.
“...You make a point.” He uttered in agreement.
My school was a single-story building with multiple rooms, occupied by a few students in different grades. To add, we were also the only third-year high school students in the school. Everything here is made of thin wood and paper, and the wooden flooring creaked ever so often that if we step on it the wrong way, it might literally collapse the floor. This building was so old that I’d be having a family reunion with the souls of my family from five generations ago every school day.
The cool breeze of the late afternoon blew toward us as we made our way to the paved dirt road.
"By the way, Hirato."
"Hm?"
"I lied. I'm actually playing Alterra. Since it released."
"Wha-- Then why won't you play co-op with me?!" Hirato was almost screaming in my face, taken aback by my lie.
"Because you're stupid. Why would you cast "Damage Reflect" on Hydra's one-turn kill when you're barely alive? Plus, it won't even damage the Hydra because the game recognizes the reflected damage as an effect, and the boss is immune to any effect."
"Urgh... Watch me beat that Hydra tomorrow, you'll regret not playing with me!"
"Do your best, Hirato. See you tomorrow," I sarcastically said to him as I watched my best friend run to his home, probably excited to try out what I just said. After all, I'm way past his level, so I can't even play with him without ruining his casual experience. It's time to go home for me as well, but the next bus stop is an hour from now. Maybe I'll play for a bit while waiting.
It was the scent of fresh air and the quiet atmosphere that separates urban life from rural life. Most people prefer convenience, while the minority prefer peacefulness. I'm part of the latter, but I still want to get a job in the city. Even if I'm still unsure what I wanted to be in the future.
“Hey, you brat!” A faint, old man’s voice screamed from the rice fields beside the paved road. “Watch out, the ground is dangerous there! Didn’t you see the sign?!”
My thoughts were cut off as I heard him shout at me with great urgency. After my eyes dart to the old man, I abruptly turn to see that there was a sign on the side of the road on both sides that said [ENTRY CLOSED]. Why wasn’t there any blockage? But it was my fault for not paying close attention to my surroundings.
“I’m sorry, mister. I didn’t see it earlier.” I apologized in a nonchalant manner, mostly because I still didn't realize the gravity of the situation at this time.
“Let go of your bag. Climb over the fence towards me. Now,” says the man.
While I didn’t know what could be so dangerous about this road that warrants an urgent reaction, I trusted him. But before I could even drop my bag, the ground starts to sink with me in the center.
It was only then that fear started to settle within me. My heart sank from my inability to do anything as my mind tried to process what was happening and what was about to befall. My legs shook from the sinking ground as well, to control my balance. I cannot feel the center of gravity in my feet anymore.
In a desperate attempt to escape from the sinking ground, I jumped, trying to outrun the sinking before I go along with it.
Yet it was too late.
The ground crumbled beneath me, revealing a sinkhole. All the adrenaline in my body surges instantly, slowing down time and making the fall to my imminent death seem like an eternity. The rocks from the ground begin to break apart and fall as if it wants to bury me as well if I wasn't dead yet from the fall.
Strangely enough, I thought that when my time comes, I’ll accept Death and warmly embrace it, but it’s too soon and unfair. My arms are both outstretched to the sunlight above, as my mind screams, “I don’t want to die yet!”
The falling rocks fully cover the sunlight as I fully plunge into the darkness, and along it with me as well. Thankfully with the darkness blinding what seems to be my body being crushed and mutilated by the heavy rocks, it only felt like I fell asleep, never to wake up again.
Good night, world.
My eyes slowly fluttered open to a familiar ceiling; particularly, my bedroom. The dark blue-painted star walls and the transparent curtain were both familiar, yet in front of me was some child using my computer. The window outside is also blindingly bright which made it seem impossible to peek outside.
“Um...” I didn’t know what else to say, so I tried to get the young girl’s attention
“Mhmhm!” A proud, laughing sneer came from the child. Still sitting on my gaming chair, she turned around to face me, her shoulders crossed and an arrogant expression that ticks me off for some reason.
“Welcome to the afterlife, Naruhaya Tabito. I have chosen you to–wait, who the FUCK are you?!” Her arrogant expression transforms into a mix of confusion, panic, and surprise after she opened her eyes.
“I should be the one saying that!” I exclaimed back, but I did not get a response because she quickly turned to the monitor. Upon standing up from my bed, I notice that the sounds of mouse clicking and keyboard pressing were all attributed to her--playing Alterra?
If this was the afterlife... It didn't look too bad. The events that transpired earlier haven’t registered in my mind yet.
“Hey, am I really dead?” I asked her.
The young girl was typing before she exclaimed in panic, “No no no...! You’re really dead! I killed the wrong person!”
“I see.” I didn’t know how to react to my death, but I also didn't feel sad or sentimental. I didn’t have much going on in the real world before I died, after all.
The young girl paused her game as she turned around to face me. “It’s because you aren’t supposed to die! I may have pressed your name accidentally while I was looking for a suitable candidate in the Living Database...” She sighs as she sinks into her chair. “Well, I suppose it’s not that big of a deal.”
The girl stood on the gaming chair, clad in a red-colored robe with a two-pointed hat that almost resembled horns. Her red-toned eyes glinted with the light of the bright window.
“Naruki Haruhito, sit,” With one downward motion of her finger, I immediately felt a strong, compelling force that made me sit on the bed.
“My name is Filya, and I am the Goddess of Creation! Your Creator, and the One Above All!” She introduces herself with her arms crossed. It appears to me that she was trying to act superior and intimidating, but her haughty attitude, matched with her small stature, made it seem like she really was someone’s kid lost in my bedroom who was cosplaying as an anime character.
“You’re a child,” Even at this point in the afterlife, I do not believe her being the world’s creator for a bit.
“Wha–” Filya is taken aback by what I said. “I'm not a child, I'm a goddess! Respect and worship me, you dimwitted mortal, should you desire not to die a second time and leave your soul wandering in the empty void of space.”
While she was speaking, I couldn't move a single inch from the bed. Even if she was a goddess, it's impossible not to take her seriously because she looks like a child scolding her older brother.
Filya raised two fingers before saying, “As a token of apology for wrongfully smiting you, I’ll give you two choices. First choice: You can return back to the real world as a baby of a rich family, and you will be a prodigy who will basically have an easy life from that period until his death of old age. Of course, you won’t remember everything that happened here and in your past life. But that’s basically the same as having a guaranteed GAME CLEAR, in your terms.”
Having an assured future was my long-term goal when I was alive back then. It seemed like a compelling idea until I heard about the second choice.
“Second choice: You will be reincarnated in another world with all your memories intact, and I will grant you a power unique only to you, and it will help you fulfill the condition that comes with this choice.”
Curious, I ask her what the condition is.
“The condition?” A crooked smirk appeared on her face, turning her haughty tone into something vicious. “Conquer the world.”
My eyes widened in surprise, the weight of her words starting to add to my fear-turned-excitement.
“There is a prophecy in this world that if the reincarnation of Typhon–the cataclysmic world-ending being of the past–attains something of unimaginable power and influence, he will destroy the world.”
Filya speaks with complete urgency, “You must conquer the world to stop Typhon’s reincarnation from attaining such power because, at this point, no one in this world is showing promise to become the world’s strongest."
After a small pause, I asked her, "What do you mean?"
"The throne is empty and he can take it anytime.”
After she finished explaining, I was given some time to think about my decision.
A safe, fulfilled, and assured life? Or a dangerous life with a chance for absolute glory?
I could never pass up on this opportunity, I said to myself, and I thought I'd never hesitate. I can return back to the real world and be born to rich parents. I’d have tasty food to eat every day, get the games I want, and in the future, I’d die of old age with my life fully satisfied and fulfilled until the very end. While my life in provincial Japan was a bit bland and boring at times, it was a life I'd want to return back to.
But the concept of determinism disgusts me.
“Can you tell me more about which power you'll give me?” As soon as I asked her that, her lips curled into a smirk as if she already knew what my choice was.
“I can’t tell you which power because the World Administrator grants it to you. I'm simply the overseer of this world, I cannot decide things for you.”
“Then–”
“Ughh shut up!” Filya gritted her teeth at my continued barrage of questions. With one flick of a finger, I stood up on my two feet as she pushed me outside the door. “I’m giving you some traits to make your life in this world easier, on top of what you’ll receive.”
“Hey–” I tried to stop my legs from moving while she was pushing me, but I couldn’t. I should probably learn to stop resisting in the presence of this goddess. “I haven’t chosen yet!”
“But you’ve already made up your mind, right?” I could feel Filya using all of her body weight to push me towards the door, with her light grunts indicating her struggle. “Good luck-urgh, Otherworlder! May the Aether guide you among the river of stars.”
“H-hey, what does that mean?! Are you wishing for me to die again?”
“It’s a saying, dumbass!”
The door opened to a blindingly bright light, causing me to close my eyes. I could feel my body hover in the air, the strong gust of wind making it seem like I was flying. Wherever it will take me, I hope it wouldn't be somewhere dangerous.
The light seeping from my eyes significantly dimmed, and the cool breeze of the tropical, rural area that’s so familiar to me blew across me. Opening my eyes, I am greeted with a sight of a forest clearing and the chirping of the birds. I found myself still wearing the same black hoodie and gray pants from "heaven," or wherever I was reincarnated with the goddess, along with a pair of rubber slippers.
At the center of the clearing was a freshwater lake reflecting the afternoon sun. White ducks with yellow beaks are swimming gently above the lake–the kind that exists on Earth.
As I observed my surroundings, the thought that this was another world flew out of my mind. So far, there was nothing notable that separates this world from Earth.
I noticed a cold, slightly heavy weight of metal in my hoodie pocket. I pull it out to see a strange metallic plate with letters I haven’t seen before, but I could somehow read it. “Status Plate” is what it said.
The Status Plate glows blue for a quick moment before three holographic interfaces popped up from within it.

WORLD ADMINISTRATOR
Because of [Dicemaster’s Covenant], the backpack from [Gift from the Goddess] has not been granted.
Lots of terms I don't know here. And my name in this world is Luck? Ironic, considering my luck stat was basically negative.
From what I can understand, my unique class, Dicemaster, doesn’t have too many special skills to begin with. “The power I get should give me an advantage when starting in this world,” said the goddess. And the backpack that should give me a guidebook and a weapon wasn't granted. What kind of fuckery is this world playing at? Not that it might be useful after all, since my passive skill [Gift of the Goddess] didn’t allow me to use any weapon. That said, how am I supposed to fight monsters with a die?
I put the Status Plate back into my pocket before attempting to test my only skill.
And... I don't know how to cast a skill yet. Do I press it while my interface is active? Do I cast it verbally? Hoping it's the latter, I verbally spoke the name of my skill, “Dice Roll.”
A formation of blue crystals suddenly accumulated at a single point above my palm. I hovered my hand below the blue crystals that looked like it was materializing something, all while doing so instinctively.
“This must be aether, then?” I presumed as I carefully observe the translucent crystals.
The aether above my hand slowly faded into the air as the die materializes fully. It starts to spin quickly before coming to a complete stop as soon as it landed on my palm. The number on the top of the die is... one.
[DICE ROLL: 1]
Unlucky... I muttered a curse under my breath before pocketing the Status Plate and retracting its holographic menu back into itself.
Suddenly, I heard a high-pitched clicking noise coming from the other side of the forest clearing. Emerging from the forest is a beetle that was nearly as big as a dog. It stared at me for a few seconds before it clicked once again--this time, it was more high pitched that it hurt my ears.
The clicking noise soon multiplied exponentially from the background of the forest, and as if that isn’t enough to knock me to my senses, the beetle charged toward me, along with probably its entire family emerging from the forest. Without a weapon or even a viable skill for protection, there was only one thing I could do in this situation.
I started to run as fast as I can into the forest, relying on the belief that I was faster than the beetles and that I'd find help along the way. While running, it didn’t take long for me to assume what my dice roll skill does.
“What the hell, Filya, this class is fucking shit!”

2023.05.28 05:59 onebuddyforlife Post Draft

The Status Plate glows blue for a quick moment before three holographic interfaces popped up from within it.

I wrote it myself, so be sure to follow everything there (* ^ ω ). There is also a weapon selector at the end of the guidebook once you read everything. Make sure not to lose it!"
,,,
WORLD ADMINISTRATOR
Hello, I'm TSR and this is my first post here! I mainly post on RoyalRoad, but I plan to upload all my chapters here in HFY in hopes of getting feedback about the story and criticism as well. I hope you enjoy!

2023.05.28 05:58 Logan_Entertainment Bendy and the Dark Revival Theory: When was the cycle interrupted???

Theory: We are well aware that Wilson from BATDR is the one that's responsible for causing the cycle to be interrupted, but the question is, when was it interrupted?
Evidence: We see that Henry Stein is aware of how the cycle can be reset, but what's interesting, is that he doesn't mention Boris, Allison, or Tom. You'd think he'd mention that he's made some friends along his never ending cycle, even Boris, who was the first ink creature that was friendly to him, yet we don't hear any hint to any of them when Henry talks to Audrey. Let alone he didn't give any references to them either.
Do the characters remember the past, even when the cycle is reset? After when Allison stabs evil Alice in the chest, she says, "why does this feel so familiar"? This seems to indicate that whenever the cycle resets, so do the memories of the characters in the world of ink; however, it seems that they have some form of awareness, despite having no memory if it happening multiple times.
There is one little problem with this: If the world gets reset, as well as the memories of the victims of the ink machine, how does Henry remember the reel of film that's capable to resetting the cycle? Well, if we recall to BATIM in Chapter 5, Allison mentions that she and Tom can't cross the river of ink, but Henry can. So it seems that Henry is special in some way? We do know that Joey was the one that put Henry in the cycle, as punishment for betraying him when Henry left the business, so it'd make sense for Henry to be special enough to where he can't get consumed by the ink, can come back when he dies without any problem, and is capable of resetting the cycle only for him to go through it again. It also seems that Henry is somewhat losing his memory, because when he and Audrey first met, he mentions to Audrey that he's almost forgotten his name. So it's clear that even though he's capable of remembering the film reel that resets the cycle, he can also forget his own name, or maybe even the friends he's made in the cycle. Even Wilson calls Henry, as well as the people he has held captive, "cycle breakers".
But that still begs the question: When was the cycle interrupted?
For some eagle eye players, you'll notice that the friendly Boris is alive and well. He's seen twice: Once when we first learn to run when we open a door, and in the vent opening when we escape from the toxic fumes in the Gent Building. We recall that in Chapter 3 of Batim, Boris is taken away from evil Alice, and is made into Brute Boris in Chapter 4. Another thing to point out, is that while yes Sammy Laurence didn't make much of an appearance (despite only making a brief comment at the final showdown), it's still helpful, because his comment shows that he's loyal to the ink demon, despite us knowing he gets killed by Bendy in Chapter 2 of BATIM and is angry at the ink demon in Chapter 5. So he's loyal to the ink demon, despite not knowing that he will "die" at the hands of Bendy when he tries to sacrifice Henry.
We also see a ruined Chapter 1 when the memory of Joey Drew takes Audrey to the chapter 1 location, and we remember that when Henry walks up to the boarded up doorway to the Ink Machine after turning it on, while escaping to the exit, the studio falls apart.
Possible answer: So it seems that either the cycle was interrupted after Chapter 1, during Chapter 2, or in-between Chapter 1 and 2 (probably when Henry passes out when stepping on that weird pentagram). Either way, I think this is a neat idea, and is something that I don't think anyone has really thought about. I could be wrong, and someone could have already made a comment regarding this, but hey I'm not taking all the credit, just making a comment about Bendy ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Hope you guys like this theory, and I'd love to hear everyones feedback on this. 😀👍

2023.05.28 04:24 groover102 Australian premiere of play exploring love, loss and feeling

A TOUCHING and funny play about 20-somethings graduating into a world that’s sold them down the river has its Australian premiere at Harbour Theatre this June.
Written by Ella Hickson and directed by Ellis R. Kinnear, Precious Little Talent follows law graduate Joey who is £20,000 in debt and has just lost her job as a waitress.
Shunned by the world and rejected by her estranged father George, she travels from the UK to New York and finds herself falling in love with idealistic young American Sam – but she doesn’t realise her new flame works for her father as a caregiver.
Precious Little Talent is an exploration of human connections being forged and re-forged by three people who can’t communicate effectively to save their lives,” Ellis said.
“It’s an exploration of love and loss and feeling like the world’s trying to trip you at every turn.”
The main challenge, according to Ellis, is the fact the play uses a more intimate setting and characters.
“I’m used to plays that expand over many different characters, many years and many different settings,” he said.
“This play sticks with three characters over the course of 24 hours from Christmas Eve to Christmas night.
“I’ve found it enjoyable because I’m a lover of character first and foremost and the ability to really dig into who Joey, George and Sam are, and what makes them tick, is incredible.”
Involved in theatre for the past 14 years, Ellis started treading the broads while at high school and has most recently appeared in Cosi and Masquerade at Curtin University and Romeo and Juliet and Richard III with the Graduate Dramatic Society.
Last year, he directed Radium Girls at the Old Mill Theatre, scoring him a best newcomer award at the annual Finley Awards where the play was also named in the top 10 productions of the year.
“The main appeal of directing Precious Little Talent was the character of Joey,” Ellis said.
“She’s gone through the education system, done what the world told her and has landed flat on her face with nowhere to go and no idea what to do.
“Joey now finds herself working in places that don’t fit her life and ideals and is in constant fear she’ll be forgotten.
“I found this incredibly relatable – I think we’ve all been Joey at some point, stuck at a crossroads with no guiding light to point the way out and I really felt a call to bring this character to life.”
Precious Little Talent plays at 7.30pm June 9, 10, 14, 16, 17, 21, 23 and 24 with 2pm matinees June 11, 18 and 25. Tickets are $25.50, $23.50 concession and $20.50 students – book at www.TAZTix.com.au or call TAZTix on 9255 3336.
Harbour Theatre is located at 16 Lochee Street, Mosman Park.
American Sam (Mitch McAulley, left) catches the eye of UK ex-pat Joey (Elysha Hayes) in Precious Little Talent.

2023.05.28 04:11 buudism Living in Chicago for 3 months - how to make it count?

Hello, I'm (25M) a remote worker that's bouncing around from city to city for a few months for the next year to see which one I want to settle down in full time and am excited to be checking out Chicago for September through December. I'm looking for housing in any of the neighborhoods including and in-between Logan Square, West Loop, River North and Lake View.
Looking for advice/tips/what to do/what not to do and any input for someone who's new to town and not really sure how to explore/how to not get cooped up in their limited time here. I plan on finding coffee shops or co-working spaces during the day for my 9-5 but need advice on how to fill up my time outside of that!So far thinking of Meetup groups, casual intramurals and potentially getting a side gig as a barback or something lol to meet some people and fill up some of the free time I'll have.
Thanks! Also side note, I've heard that Chicago winters are brutal - Is Fall there pleasant or am I choosing a bad time to check it out?

2023.05.28 03:46 YandereLobster Lone Wolf

One week prior to the repair of Bracco Village.
For as far as Bianca Nero could see, red littered the landscape. Nothing but red and orange. An always-autumnal path in the pilgrimage she’d taken so long ago, when she set off for Beacon. But for better or worse, she didn’t feel like the same person she was when she’d taken this path so long ago.
Leaves crunched beneath her feet, a cool breeze bristling against her cheek as her white cloak gently swayed in the breeze, making her stand out like a white blot on a red canvas. She was alone, but never felt lonely here. Just a little further and she’d be home again, catching up with her grandparents and telling them how Beacon was going.
It wasn’t an easy trip per say. If it was, she would’ve come back more often. But seldom were the times that she actually could make a trip like this without missing a day of classes, and the shoddy connection on her scroll way out here in the wilderness made it particularly difficult. It’d taken more than a little struggling just to message Russet to let him know the trip had gone well.
But slowly, the crunch of leaves slowed to a halt. Bianca’s eyes shifted skyward, staring up at the treetops as the wind bit against her canine ears. Something wasn’t right. There was a chill in the air, and not the same as the cold wind. It was difficult for her to put her finger on just what was bothering her, in fact. Like feeling a change in the weather in one’s bones. But this was Bianca’s home, so what could there be to worry about? She’d come all this way, and now it was just a half hour walk until she was finally back.
And so the girl continued on to Bracco.
Bianca’s single, bright blue eye gazed numbly at the old watch-tower. It was one of Bracco’s oldest landmarks, an old stone watch-tower from the Great War, left behind and abandoned. She used to climb it all the time as a kid, to get a good look over the forest.
But now, the stone tower lay crumbled and broken, toppled over by damage to one of its now ancient supports. It was old and fragile, but to collapse like this? Bianca knew without a second thought it wasn’t an accident or coincidence.
The overgrown stone bricks finally led Bianca to her destination as she reached the tip of a rather bumpy hill, her heart filled with worry rather than nostalgia. On the very edge of her sight lay the familiar red and white tents that littered the market, always enticing the travelers that passed through Bracco on the way to Vale. But it wasn’t like she remembered, not in the slightest. Gone were the echoes of carts clattering and the commotion of conversation, replaced with dead silence save for the hissing wind. Like a nightmarish reflection of her most treasured memories.
Her ears perked up as she turned back and forth, but the stalls were empty. No proof they’d ever been full, save for the tracks of carts against the road. But what’s more odd was the contents of the stalls. The produce hadn’t been set out, but many of the supplies and registers were still locked. Only the essentials were gone. Which meant, if Bianca’s assumption was correct, that they’d left in a hurry. But it was what awaited her in the square that terrified Bianca the most.
Just past the market and between the somewhat narrow paths, Bianca found herself in what should’ve been the busiest part of this small town. A simple gathering in the middle of Bracco, with a bar, some local government related buildings, and a fountain situated on the edge of the Ghiaccio River — right across from the farmstead she’d grown up on.
The roof of the old bar had been caved in by something heavy, the entrance torn open as if by a feral beast. The fountain cracked from something impacting against it, with a dark red stain about its edges. Like the ruins of some battlefield rather than the homely town she’d been expecting. It was gone. Even if she found where the people had gone, if they had in fact survived, Bracco was in ruins. Her entire purpose in becoming a Huntress, destroyed before she’d even had a chance to try.
“Anyone!?” Bianca called out as loud as she could. “Is anyone here!?”
Worry caught in Bianca’s throat. “Rosso!? Rosa?” Bianca called out again, her voice shaky with concern for her grandparents. “...Anyone? Please...”
But no one replied.
Until something did.
Bianca turned sharp towards one of the collapsed houses as the sound of wood creaking echoed out. White claws emerged from the darkness, old bits of red stained against the tips as black furred legs emerged, bone plating littered across its body, forming a mask with red accents - pristine save for a long crack down the side of it’s mask — and a tiny knife still embedded within it’s eye socket, though it didn’t seem to be able to feel it. Bianca’s old knife.
It was a Grimm Bianca knew all too well. An old, local legend nicknamed Belial by the towns that had been victim to it. One of those victims being a much younger Bianca, and it’d cost her an eye. But why here? It was true that Bracco was rural, but they’d never had Grimm in town before. And this damage couldn’t possibly be the work of a single Beowolf, alpha or not. Something had drawn them into town. But there was a more pressing matter than that.
Bianca’s heart ached for her home, but rage made for an excellent painkiller.
The Beowolf growled menacingly, only for the gnashing of teeth to be overpowered by the deafening, echoing burst of aura engulfing Bianca as her semblance practically erupted from her. The ringing howl of her semblance betrayed the pure fury that filled Bianca, her teeth clenched tight and the claws of her gauntlets begging to tear into the creature. For a Grimm that could only see negative emotion, the sight of the young huntress was like looking upon a bonfire of nothing but anger and hate, and only moments later would it all be directed upon the beast.
Bianca leapt forward like a crazed, feral animal, her claws tearing into the Beowolf’s arm as she opened the brawl with a series of feral slashes from her claws. Aggressive and fast, far more so than she even knew she was capable of. More than she’d ever put to use at Beacon. But those were training, just practice against other huntsmen. This, on the other hand, was a raw desire — or even a need, to kill no matter what it took.
Even as the Beowolf’s claws lashed out at Bianca, blue sparks of aura fluttering off as it impacted against her aura, there was no flow of combat. No ebb and flow of attack and defense, just raw aggression tearing into the opponent, the pain barely registering in Biana’s mind. But soon she was forced to confront it as the beast rammed its full force against her, slamming against the berserk huntress as she was hurtled backwards, crashing through wood as what was left of the aura shielding her dissipated.
Bianca winced as she stood, quickly recognizing the old inn. Pain was beginning to set in as she looked down, a bit of wooden shrapnel having embedded itself loosely in her side, blood pooling against the black fabric. A surface wound, but a warning of what would come if she kept this up. Her eye shifted to check the dust chamber of her left gauntlet, a vicious smirk breaking her composure. ‘Thanks, Firnen. Worked out perfectly.’
The already precarious roof of the inn shifted and creaked as the Beowolf violently bashed aside one of the bits of lumber blocking the entrance, only to be met with a volley of bolts from Bianca’s crossbow. Only it wasn’t to cover her retreat, but the opposite. By the time it had caught a glance of her, she’d already closed the distance again, the claws suddenly lifting away from the hand just a bit, the circuit connecting as a sharp, crackling sound filled the room, lighting up the darkness of the entryway in an instant as the electrical dust sparked to life. Shock coursed through the Beowolf’s body, numbing it to the sensation of Bianca gripping the knife embedded in its blind eye, tearing it from the socket. No sooner had her childhood knife returned to her grip than she embedded it in the creature’s neck. But what would’ve been a fatal blow for another Grimm was far too shallow for Belial.
Just as she was about to press the assault, pain filled Bianca’s mind as she let out a harsh cry, the Grimm’s maw biting down desperately on her arm, cracking through the dust chamber as it sparked, burning against Bianca’s shoulder. Floorboards cracked beneath them, liberating Bianca from its grip only to fill her with the brief terror of falling, as the two opponents fell to the basement below. And while Bianca was able to land on her feet, it may have been for the worse, as a barely audible ‘crack’ seemed to send pain up her leg. Burning, agonizing pain from her ankle, but even still she was determined to fight through it. The creature had taken her eye, and now her home. No matter what it took, it wouldn’t take more.
Belial looked up to meet its opponent just as a flash of white appeared before it. But what it slashed at wasn’t a huntress at all. Rather, Bianca’s thrown cloak in a last ditch effort to distract the creature. And that sheet of white would be the last thing the beast saw.
With a cry of both pain and rage, Bianca threw herself at the Grimm, ready to kill or be killed as she tore her gauntlets into its neck. The moment the claws connected, the damaged dust-chamber sparked to life. Pitch black fur split aside as the Grimm’s head separated from it’s body, propelled by the imminent blast of sparking and combusting dust blowing open the side of Bianca’s gauntlet.
The sounds of battle faded, as did Bianca’s anger. And all that replaced it was emptiness, and pain.
Even once she’d dragged herself out of the ruins, Bianca could hardly walk. It took an old piece of wood just to balance herself enough to walk on her broken ankle.. No sooner had she been greeted by the empty silence of a dead town than familiar howls rang out in the distance, a shiver running down the Faunus’ spine. She knew one Grimm couldn’t have done all of this, but even with all her desire for vengeance, she wouldn’t last through another fight. And Bracco needed help more than she did.
Her mind felt light and dazed, practically dragging herself along as she made her way back down the road and into the familiar red forest. Desperately she stared at her scroll. And the moment there was even the smallest bit of a signal, her shaky hand began sending an SOS to Beacon, even as the pain from her combusted gauntlet began to set in along the burned arm.
No sooner had it gone through than Bianca collapsed against a tree, her lone eye watching the red canopy of leaves above. Finally, she had a chance to breathe. Her reason to hunt had been destroyed, and in turn she’d burned her anger and every last bit of effort she had to destroy one of the creatures responsible. But now the deafening anger was gone, and she could hear again. But the only sound she heard was unbearable loneliness.
By the time Bianca was found by the huntsmen that Beacon sent, she was barely clinging to life. A makeshift bandage made from her sleeve was all that kept her from bleeding out, although even then it wasn’t clear if she’d really survive. But days came and went, and with time, Bianca found her strength returning. But even then, her purpose was still gone.
But a purpose was something Bianca could find with time. It would take more than one loss to break the young wolf.

Croatia is known for its gorgeous coastline, crystal clear waters, and charming villages. But there is much more to discover beyond the coast. Renting a riverboat will allow you to explore inland, meandering through rivers and experiencing the country in a completely different way.
One of the best areas to explore on a riverboat is the Kupa river, which flows through the beautiful Risnjak National Park. Another wonderful option is the Sava river, which runs through the capital city of Zagreb, giving you the chance to explore the beautiful city from a unique perspective.
When is the best time to rent a riverboat in Croatia? We recommend late spring or early fall when the crowds have thinned, and the temperatures are cooler for more enjoyable cruising.

2023.05.28 02:55 GundersonOfficial I’m trying to listen to one new album a day until August, please give me recommendations

Here’s a list of all the albums I’ve listened to (I’m probably missing a few). At the bottom I’ll say a bit more
Too Low for Zero Dark Side of the Moon Hunky Dory Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Honky Chateau Aladdin Sane Nevermind Bleach In Utero Elton John Blue Moves Empty Sky Madman Across the Water Captain Fantastic Queen Queen ii A Night at the Opera A Day at the Races News of the World Jazz Flash Gordon The Works The Miracle Bat Out of Hell Bat Out of Hell II Bat Out of Hell III Second Helping (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd) Paranoid The Mothership Space Oddity Tommy The Game Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band Wish You Were Here The Complete Thom Bell Sessions Rumors Beatles White Album Green River Buffalo Spring
This was only studio albums btw. My favorites on this list were (in no particular order) The Complete Thom Bell Sessions, Wish You Were Here, Bat Out of Hell 1 and 3, Ziggy Stardust, and Second Helping. I wasn’t a huge fan of Bat Out of Hell 2, and I downright disliked Insecticide.

2023.05.28 02:52 vibrantashes Rhode Island Driver pissed about where it takes me.

I doordash in RI, I know it’s a small state. But, I doordash in the East Providence to Fall River, MA area (which is massive tbh). I will consistently pick up food in my area but have to deliver it outside of my area (either downtown PVD, or Pawtucket, or even Attleboro, MA area).
After I complete those orders, I won’t get another order until I navigate back to the area I started in. is there a way I can make it so that I don’t leave the area?

2023.05.28 02:40 Accomplished-Test441 Hi all! Seeking recommendations for a new vet for our dog.

We have a 2.5 yr old female llewellin setter. We currently go to River City VCA in post falls. We’ve been disappointed in the continuance of care and generally how they practice there. Looking for a local vet, maybe someone who specializes in working/hunting breeds. Avoiding another chain ran vet center. Prefer a vet in the valley or north Idaho. Willing to travel for someone exceptional. Thanks!

2023.05.28 01:16 BrotherAJC Hyperborea (read description)

Hyperborea (read description)
Hyperborea is the mythical land of the people “beyond the North Wind” in Greek lore. It is mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus as a continent-bound land from Egyptian legend, bordered by the river Oceanus. Eridanos was the main river that flowed through it, home to white swans and lined with poplar trees that would weep amber. At one point, it had been blessed with eternal spring, resulting in a double harvest of grain per year, with most of the countryside covered in forests called the Garden of Apollo. When it was destroyed by ice, its people were believed to have migrated to lands in the south. According to Greek legend, the land of Hyperborea is a place of total perfection, with sunlight 24 hours a day. The people never suffered from disease or old age, nor did they have to labor or fight in any wars or battles.
Hyperborea is believed to have been far north of Thrace, and in modern times would be considered to be located within the Arctic Circle. The actual location of Hyperborea is a mystery, however, and according to the Greek Poet Pindar, the road to the Hyperboreans could not be found by ship or on foot.
Several legends point to the snow-covered Riphean Mountains, next to the Black Sea, as the location of Hyperborea, far beyond the realm of Boreas, ruler of the North Wind. Different philosophers and poets have placed Hyperborea in different areas, adding to the mystery. Homer believed Boreas to be in Thrace, claiming that Hyperborea was located in the region of Dacia, now an area north of the Balkan Mountains. Aristotle wrote that the Riphean Mountains were on the border of Scythia, with Hyperborea being even further north. And Hecataeus of Abdera believed that Hyperborea was in the area of what is now called Britain. Although Hyperborea is also described as being north of the Celts, at the time, Celtic society was in Europe and only became restricted to Britannia after the death of Christ. In Hecataeus’ account, griffins inhabited the peaks of the mountains near Hyperborea, and the valleys surrounding them held the one-eyed tribe of Arimaspoi.
The Greeks believed that Boreas, god of the North Wind, lived in Thrace, and may have been part of a Celtic tribe, such as the Helvetii. They built a sacred province dedicated to Apollo and adorned the temple they constructed with spherical offerings; some scholars believe this temple to be Stonehenge. The people of Hyperborea could have been either of Gaulish origin (modern-day France) or possibly Northern European (Scandinavian) descent. One of the most legendary of the Hyperborean people was a healer known as Abaris, who is described by Herodotus as a sage and priest of Apollo.
Hyperborea was best known as a land where people never grew old, were blessed with disease-free bodies, and were untouched by war and hardship. Apollo’s priests ruled Hyperborea as a theocratic society. The three kings who ruled it in his honor were the Boreades, sons of the North Wind, Boreas.
The Hyperboreans worshipped Apollo, who was believed to live among them. They would pack mysterious gifts in straw and pass them from one tribe to the next until they completed the journey to the temple on Delos.
Several notable myths and figures arose from Hyperborea, including great healers, founders of shrines, and trials of mortals set upon them by the gods.
Abaris the Healer traveled around the world on a magical arrow meant to symbolize Apollo, eating no food as he journeyed, and performing miracles wherever he went. The arrow he flew on was the same arrow Apollo used to slay the Cyclopes, and it had been hidden beneath a Hyperborean mountain before being found by Abaris. He practiced healing of the soul as well as the body through incantations, and also had a gift for prophecy. He wore simple Scythian clothing and was held in high regard in Greece for his honesty and simplicity. Abaris learned his healing skills after fleeing a plague at Caucasus in his homeland of Hyperborea. With what he learned from the experience, he was able to purify Sparta and Knossos and several other cities. His ability to reason and his persuasive manner helped him to steer a former tyrant, Phalaris, towards a virtuous life after a long discussion of divine matters. Abaris was able to read omens and predict future events by examining the entrails of animals, and his deeds are mentioned in the Scythian Oracles.
Several of the mortal children of the gods visited the land of Hyperborea. Phaethon, in an attempt to prove to his friends he was the son of Helios, tried to drive the sun chariot. He could not control it, however, and, given no other choice, Zeus struck him down to prevent the scorching of the Earth. In flames, his body fell into the River Eridanos. The Helidaes, his sisters, transformed into amber-weeping poplar trees in their grief over Phaethon, and his friend Kyknos was transformed into a swan. The Hyperboreans, when they began to reach old age, would leap into the lake created by Phaethon’s fall, and would themselves become white swans in commemoration of the tragedy.
Perseus, who was the son of Zeus, traveled to Hyperborea. Here he went in search of the Nymphs who were the guardians to the gods’ treasures. He was entertained by the people of Hyperborea and would go on to find the Graiai, who were swan-bodied crones who knew the location of Medusa. Heracles, a descendant of Perseus, would also make this journey in search of Artemis’ golden-horned deer. He would return to Hyperborea searching for the golden apples of Heserides, and also to find Atlas.
The people of Hyperborea are mentioned in the founding of the Olympic games, when Heracles began a festival for Zeus’ honor he made a pilgrimage to Hyperborea to take sacred wild olives for the shrine.
Leto, a female Titan, traveled to the island of Delos from Hyperborea along with her pack of wolves to give birth to Apollo, with aid from Eileithyia who came from the northern realm. The Hyperboreans sent five men and several female priestesses as pilgrims to the island to form a shrine, but the maidens were raped and killed, which caused the Hyperboreans to end the pilgrimage and choose to deliver offerings and messages through neighboring tribes instead. The oracle of Apollo at Delphi is another major shrine in Hyperborea. The Hyperboreans made the temples located at the shrine from beeswax and feathers. At the time the Gauls attempted to sack the temple, phantom spirits of the pilgrim prophets appeared and chased the army from Hyperborea.
Modern-day Scandinavians have been frequently identified with the Hyperboreans, especially in 17th century Sweden where the Goths believed the Scandinavian Peninsula to contain both Atlantis and the land of Hyperborea. Western European culture also self-identifies with the Hyperboreans, through European scholars in the 19th century in works of literature. To this day, the term Hyperborean is used to refer to people who inhabit a cold climate and is also associated with the languages of peoples indigenous to the Arctic Circle.

2023.05.28 00:56 Fractal-Farter Aliens!?

I believe they are and I believe it's selfish to think we're the only intelligent species and blah, blah, blah. Here are my stories of the encounters I've had. 1. Just into double digit age, walking through the woods near my house, I pass this creek and there before me is a bright light followed by weird near mechanical shrieks, but rhythmic like speech, after I remember I'm back in my backyard sitting. 2. Seems like a dream, there I am in some kind of craft looking out of these gigantic windows, looking down on earth. 3. Similar to first, seemed like a dream, same craft, looking down on earth, yet this time the windows just continue down through a rounded corridor, I never see the creature, but they speak telepathicly. "You're welcome here and aren't alone" is what they say. 4.This happened last night, myself, my girlfriend and a friend(not living with us) have this same strange "dream" with a few small variation, of which I will get into.
The similarities in the 3 are we all feel weightless, and see ourselves lying in our beds asleep yet we still ascend into the sky, a bright light and all of a sudden the feel of cold steel touch our skin, we come to and notice we are in what looks like fish bowl, thick windows and steel all around us. We look out the windows and that's one if the differences we all see something different. My friend sees literally nothing, no stars, not a thing. My girlfriend sees a whole new world a whole new galaxy possibly, far more vibrant than our own, mine, I simply see our big blue marble, but she's on fire.
After our sights we all hear a voice yet see no one that could give off the voice, no visible speakers to speak off, the voice says "this could your future." We then are escorted around this fishbowl like structure, the voice continues "don't worry though, you're here for a reason." We then all see that bright ass light again and begin to descend back into our beds, we see our bodies again and fall into them. Again this is where we differ. My friend has another experience, he then begins to float in some random river(not sure if connected but it happened), my girlfriend just wakes up in a cold sweat filled with paranoia, I, myself wake up with a strange thing looking at me.
