2023.05.28 06:04 InfernoAA God Made the World in Six Days, I’ll Perfect New Japan's on the Seventh Part Five: Destined
In Part Four, the comeback tour of rockstar Hiroshi Tanahashi was cut brutally short at the hands of the Leader of the New School, Zack Sabre Jr., who embarked on a quest to prove himself New Japan's most valuable gaijin. After beating back Will Ospreay for Royal Quest, he ran into another familiar face in Minoru Suzuki, almost clobbering him into retirement until Naomichi Marufuji made the save. Ending his saga with Just6Guys with a win over Maru, he placed a bow on the long-standing Blackpool Combat Club rivalry by besting Jon Moxley, cementing Sabre-Gun as New Japan's undisputed leaders... That is, without taking Los Ingobernables de Japon into account.
Since becoming one again, LIJ’s been on a tear through NJPW’s ranks this year in spite of Shingo Takagi dropping the belt and PAC losing the New Japan Cup Finals to the current World Champion. IWGP United States, IWGP Tag Team (Death Triangle have become LIJ affiliates through PAC), and NJPW World Television Championships in their grasps, they seek to round out the group by all holding titles simultaneously. But that begs the question – who’ll be going after the World Title? Though Shingo’s battle ready, he insists
Tetsuya Naito take it this time, the Stardust Genius having worked his back off to rebound from Wrestle Kingdom. Failing every attempt in the past 3 years though, the question remains whether he can truly pull it off this time, or if it’s just not meant to be.
Kizuna Road - Night Four (July 1, 2024)
Sabre-Gun (Zack Sabre Jr. & El Phantasmo) vs Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito & PAC)
With Naito confirmed as Sabre’s #1 Contender for Wrestle Dynasty, SG and LIJ have themselves a scaled-down rematch from New Year’s Dash, Zack picking his trusty right-hand man ELP, and Tetsuya bringing the US Champion, knowing PAC has unresolved issues with ZSJ from the NJC. Though it drives the Bastard to work doubly-hard, especially considering how it’ll look if he pins the World Champion, it also makes their teamwork suffer, PAC becoming self-absorbed in getting the pin. Backfiring, a Sudden Death from Phantasmo knocks his lights out, SG getting their win back from NYD and putting the challenger on the backfoot heading into Madison Square Garden!
Sabre-Gun def. Los Ingobernables de Japon (16:12)
PAC appears distraught after the match, but Naito simply tells him ‘tranquilo’, not taking it personally. Though he’d hoped to use this match to get into ZSJ’s head, it appears he’ll just have to do that himself, like he’s always done.

Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs Tetsuya Naito XI - IWGP World Heavyweight Championship
In what’s been a very successful night for LIJ thus far, clean-sweeping their way through the competition, it all rests on Naito’s shoulders now to bring it home. Perhaps the most unreliable man to slot in this spot, and yet, the most beloved, MSG fully invested in Tetsuya’s chase, either the grandest of celebrations or coldest of heartbreaks will end the night! Naito keeps his cool, emanating his usual larger-than-life aura as he walks out in a pristine crimson suit, paying homage to Shingo, whilst Sabre’s cockier than ever with his recent streak of huge wins, knowing he has Tetsuya doubting himself after their tag. As he hands his title over, the two come face-to-face, SABRE SPITTING GUM INTO NAITO’S FACE, but Tetsuya doesn’t let ZSJ’s tactics faze him, having come too far for too long to let mind games be his downfall.
Circling each other, Zack lunges for a lock-up but Naito walks past, smirking and stretching in the opposite corner. Sabre rolls his eyes as Tetsuya turns around and tells him ‘tranquilo’, before going for it again… Zack snatching the headlock this time as Naito tries to repeat, but Tetsuya instantly whips him to the corner, teasing the COMBINACION CABRON as ZSJ braces himself… Naito stops in front of him and does the ‘Abre los Ojos’ taunt!
Furious, Sabre piefaces him, NAITO RETURNING A FOREARM, AND WE’RE OFF! Trading strikes, Zack rocks Tetsuya with European Uppercuts, Naito returning forearms, before a Japanese Arm Drag stops Zack in his tracks! Naito goes for another, but Zack hooks onto Tetsuya’s legs, tripping him up and contorting the foot! Tetsuya boots him off with the other, a Neckbreaker and a Somersault Senton connecting, though Sabre absorbs the latter, trapping Naito’s arm onto the mat to STOMP THE HAND!
Picking him back up, he cracks Naito with chops, before whipping him at the ropes, Naito hitting off them one after the other to build momentum, teasing the Flying Forearm Zack’s expecting… only to roll into the Tranquilo pose! ZACK MEETS HIM WITH A NECK TWIST!!! Tetsuya scrambling to the corner, Sabre steps on his throat against the ropes, BEFORE SLAPPING HIM! NAITO SPITS IN ZACK’S FACE!!! A harsh uppercut knocks Tetsuya back, a Running European following and a PENALTY KICK! Naito dodges and nails the FLYING FOREARM SMASH!
Teasing the Tornado DDT, it’s cancelled by an Enzuigiri, Zack leaping for the KIMURA- NAITO COUNTERS INTO VALENTIA!!! ONE! TWO! THR-KICK OUT!!! Sending Sabre into the corner, the COMBINACION CABRON CONNECTS! AND A MISSILE DROPKICK! Naito teases the DRAGON SUPLEX, but Sabre flips through and STOMPS HIS ELBOW! SNAP GERMAN ON THE NECK FROM SABRE!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NO DICE! Naito woozy, his head’s only further knocked around by a ROLLING ELBOW! A CORNER HIGH KNEE connects, before a Hammerlock Suplex floats into a TESCO MEAL DEAL!!!
Naito’s hand flails about the mat as Sabre keeps him grounded, no Valentia escape this time, forcing Tetsuya to work the old-fashioned way to the ropes! MSG backing the Stardust Genius, after much deliberation he gets a foot on the ropes! But Zack’s right back on him, going for a NORTHERN LIGHTS SUPLEX- NAITO STANDS HIM UP WITH A SNAP DDT! An EVOLUCION’S shut down though, Sabre hitting the brakes to nail the ARM PELE! Fishing the arm, Zack tries to float into a FLYING ARTICLE 50- NAITO STUFFS HIM WITH A GLORIA!!! ONE! TWO! THR-SABRE SURVIVES!!!
Rallying momentum, Tetsuya nails the TORNADO DDT! Sabre nursing the head, a DRAGON SUPLEX FOLLOWS!!! In the drop zone, Naito tests the waters for a RUNNING DESTINO- SABRE SHUTS IT DOWN WITH A EUROPEAN CLUTCH!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NAITO’S DREAMS STAY ALIVE!!! Getting dangerously close with the flash pin, Tetsuya throws defiant forearms, Zack catching and contorting one, but a ROLLING WHEEL KICK knocks him off! ESPERANZA!!! ONE! TWO! THR-SABRE KICKS OUT!!!
Hooking the head, Naito hoists Sabre up… ZACK WITH A GUILLOTINE CHOKE MID-AIR!!! Tetsuya’s eyes bulge out his skull, looking for the nearest turnbuckle to ram Sabre into it, but ZSJ’s quicker, yanking him to the mat and transitioning into a JIM BREAKS ARMBAR!!! Brutally bending the arm at an awkward angle, there’s a manic look in Zack’s eyes as NYC desperately cheers on Naito, who does his best to hang on! Sabre keeps tugging further and further, eager to ruin Tetsuya, but it backfires, helping him stretch his leg to the ropes!
The crowd erupts as the referee forces Sabre off, though Naito’s clearly hurting all the same, a European helping no less! Zack rallies with further Uppercuts, one knocking Tetsuya down, before firing a PENALTY KICK!!! NAITO ABSORBS IT AND ROLLS THROUGH, SABRE GOING FOR SECONDS BUT HE EATS A RUNNING DESTINOOOOOOOOO!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOOOO!!! Shaking himself off, Naito attempts another, though Sabre stops it with elbows, before hopping into a REAR NAKED CHOKE!
Tetsuya tries to run forwards to free himself, though ZSJ swivels on his back into a GEDO CLUTCH!!! ANOTHER FLASH PIN! BUT NAITO ROLLS THROUGH THIS TIME INTO HIS OWN – POLVO DE ESTRELLA!!! ONE! TWO! THR-SABRE STAYS IN!!! AND AN EVOLUCION!!! ONE! TWO! THR-ANOTHER KICK OUT!!! NAITO’S GOING FOR THE SWING DESTINO!!! BUT A ZACK DRIVER COUNTERS!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Slapping up Naito’s neck, Sabre dumps him on it with a TIGER SUPLEX!!! Naito woozy, Zack nails the PENALTY KICK!!! NAITO’S REFUSING TO STAY DOWN! Hearing MSG’s cries, he wills himself back up as Sabre watches in fascination… ONLY FOR ANOTHER PK TO CUT HIM OFF!!! And just like the 2022 NJC Finals, he’s going to end it here with a SECOND ZACK DRIVER- NAITO NAILS A DESTINO MID-AIR!!! HE’S STILL MOVING SOMEHOW!!! Stumbling to his feet, Tetsuya measures his man… DESTINOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! ONE! TWO! THR-SABRE’S FOOT’S ON THE ROPE!!!
Saving Naito more than once, it’s come to Zack’s aid now too! Hammering Sabre with forearms, Naito tees up another DESTINO- PELE KICK!!! Tetsuya falls forward, Zack catching him in a STRETCH MUFFLER!!! IF HE CAN JUST GRAB THE OTHER LEG, IT’S ALL OVER, COMPLETING THE ORIENTEERING WITH NAPALM DEATH!!! Zack bends Naito further and further as he tries to grab hold… TETSUYA SWINGS BACK! AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN! SABRE LETS GO!!! AND A ZACK DRIVER FROM NAITO!!!
Sabre on his back, Naito thinks about waiting for the Destino… but then he sees the top rope. The crowd cry at him not to, screwing him over time and time again, but Tetsuya can’t help it! Heading up top, the world holds their breath, NAITO SOARING THROUGH THE AIR… STARDUST PRESS CONNECTS!!! ONE! TWO! THREE!!! IT’S A MIRACLE IN MADISON SQUARE GARDEN!!! NAITO’S WORLD CHAMPION AGAIN!!!
Tetsuya Naito def. Zack Sabre Jr. (c) to win the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (31:18)
New York LOSES their minds as Naito’s handed the title, Tetsuya himself struggling to process what just happened! But then LIJ rush out – PAC with the US Title, Hiromu with the TV Title, Shingo, Yota, and Titan with the NEVER 6-Man Titles, and even the Lucha Brothers with the Tag Titles! THEY’RE DRAPED IN GOLD, BABY! Sharing embraces all around as a dismal Sabre trudges to the back, there’s not a single dry eye in the arena as the outcasts raise their fists to the sky with one hand and their titles with the other, golden tickertape hailing down! Naito’s on top of the world after 3 long years, and it feels damn good! Doing the customary championship edition roll-call, the show fades on LIJ holding all their gold… and PAC looking over at Naito’s.
G1 Climax 34
Entering his second of fifteen G1s as the reigning champion, Naito heads B Block opposite stiff competition. Though dispatching of Hiromu in friendly competition on Night One, the two are subsequently assaulted by KONGOH post-match, allowing NOAH’s KENOH to upset him the following night! Behind the 8-ball already, Tetsuya’s motivated to make a comeback, mowing through Narita, Tanahashi, Yota, Sabre, and KENTA to take back the lead! Suffering another surprise defeat at Jeff Cobb’s hands after multiple failed attempts from the Hawaiian Hulk to best him, it opens the door for a returning JAY WHITE to spoil his final night, wrecking Naito’s legs with a ladder, allowing Zack to advance on 14 points! As for B Block, a draw between Will Ospreay and Kazuchika Okada on the final night puts the Commonwealth Kingpin through, the rivals meeting one more time! Other key underlying stories see Shibata finally beating Okada, Ospreay avenging his Takagi loss, PAC beating his fellow LIJ members but losing to SANADA, and KONGOH causing ruckus throughout the competition.

Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, PAC, Hiromu Takahashi, Titan) vs KONGOH (KENOH, Manabu Soya, Masakatsu Funaki, Hi69, Shuji Kondo)
Perhaps the focal reason for Naito not making the Finals, KONGOH’s tournament chicanery, as led by KENOH, was a masterfully crafted plan. After losing to Tetsuya in last year’s LIJ vs KONGOH series at Wrestle Kingdom 17, the thought of ruining the Stardust Genius for vengeance never left the Rogue Fist’s mind, and with his win over Tetsuya in the G1, their score is now 1-1. Reigniting the intense rivalry between the two stables, they have an upgraded rematch to their Wrestle Kingdom 16 5-on-5, both sides having greatly changed since then.
Once again, PAC’s especially adamant to claim the spotlight, the loss to SANADA making him temperamental despite having the 2nd best LIJ record in this year’s tournament. An argument breaking out between PAC and Shingo as to who should get the pin is put on ice by Naito, though it doesn’t keep Titan from eating a nasty PFS from KENOH, handing the invaders the win!
KONGOH def. Los Ingobernables de Japon (19:57)
Redeeming WK16, KENOH offers the angriest of satisfied smiles, the group cackling as they gesture belts around their waists, warning that their business isn’t yet over. LIJ left behind, there’s a sour mood in the air from the loss, though when Shingo offers a fist in apology, PAC, taking a look at a nodding Naito, ultimately returns one, showing that despite popular belief, LIJ’s still fine.
Splitting off for Shingo and co. to gear up for KONGOH’s second wave whilst Naito and PAC are scheduled for AEW’s ALL IN supershow, this time taking place in Tetsuya’s home of the Tokyo Dome, both men are set for defences on the show. In PAC’s case, it’s a rematch against J6G’s SANADA, the Bastard adamant to gain Naito’s favour by beating the traitor. As for Naito, he has Jay on his tail!
Until the recent G1, White refused to show his face on any sort of NJPW programming (including Forbidden Door) since being embarrassed at Okada’s hands and having his faction torn to shreds. Leaving Japan to join AEW, no longer having connections to hide behind nor help him, he was forced to be the lone wolf for once, becoming even more merciless, knowing he’s all he has. After spreading chaos abroad, most recently coming up short in the AEW World Championship picture, trauma from his Okada loss clinging onto him anytime the stakes are raised too high again, he decided it was time to return to his roots to clear his head and eliminate any shred of weakness left in his body so that he can claim the top prize again, and there’s no better place to do so than the building his title was taken from him – the Tokyo Dome.
The last time he faced Naito in the Tokyo Dome, he had Gedo by his side, yet still lost. Now though, he declares if he’s to have this match, he wants a compensatory factor. A means of looking out for himself, like Naito has LIJ. He’s already beaten Tetsuya thrice in singles competition, knowing he’s the better wrestler, so this time… HE WANTS A LADDER MATCH!!! Japan’s become more and more geared to the Western market, the culture shifting from traditions, so unless he’s a snob like Okada, he'll embrace the new vision and accept the challenge. Jay using the perfect words to get under Tetsuya’s skin, he accepts, looking to tear down the foundations of the Rainmaker’s regime with his reign, starting with this!
RevProxNJPW 12th Anniversary Show (August 24, 2024)
Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito & PAC) vs The Knight Dynasty (Ricky Knight Jr. & Zak Knight)
The night before ALL IN features a special RevPro crossover event with their partners, NJPW, the 12th Anniversary being celebrated in Japan. Naturally, Naito tags with the most RevPro familiar member of LIJ, PAC, the two champions battling the celebrated Knight Dynasty, who are considered the present and future of the promotion! What begins as a fun exhibition sees more of the differences between PAC and Naito come to light, the hot-headedness of the Bastard and the collectedness of El Ingobernable wanting different things out of the match, yet still managing to remain reasonably on the same page. A close call on a 619 from Ricky sees Naito shove PAC out the way in the nick of time, absorbing the blow himself, though without acknowledging it, PAC springs to action, a Black Arrow on Zak scoring the victory!
Los Ingobernables de Japon def. The Knight Dynasty (13:10)
As the referee approaches LIJ with their titles, PAC’s quick to receive both, Naito only recovering just in time to find the Bastard lingering for a moment as he looks between the pieces of gold, before finally handing Tetsuya’s over him and walking off, leaving the leader confused yet unconcerned.

Tetsuya Naito (c) vs Jay White V - IWGP World Heavyweight Championship - Ladder
Stepping into the mastermind of the Switchblade, White baits Naito to play his game, the long-time rivals settling their score over a belt they both have history with. With no Gedo around, Jay’s focus is to demolish Naito’s already tattered knees with the ladder like he did to cost Tetsuya the G1, slowing down each climbing attempt bit by bit. Given the two’s creativity, it’s a sick warfare of increasingly dangerous spots, Naito taking Jay with him to neck bump city, White cruelly massacring Tetsuya’s body with reckless abandon.
White’s notably more in his element here, letting the Tokyo Dome atmosphere heal him whilst hurting Naito. A HANGING BLADE RUNNER cuts a Stardust Press attempt short, the magic only lasting once, but a ladder bridge CANADIAN DESTROYER buys Naito some momentum back! Ultimately, a war atop the ladder sees Naito boot Jay off, allowing him to unhook the gold to retain!
Tetsuya Naito (c) def. Jay White V to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (25:30)
Though Naito walks out with his belt, PAC doesn’t, making the Bastard’s issues all the more prominent, taking more frequent looks over at Tetsuya’s gold, which begs the question – was there more to PAC joining LIJ than originally thought? Still, he wishes Naito good luck for Wrestle Grand Slam, telling him he wants to see the belt on him when they go England. But for now, the end of his trilogy against KENOH awaits!

Tetsuya Naito (c) vs KENOH III - IWGP World Heavyweight Championship
For over two years, the rivalry between LIJ and KONGOH has slowly simmered to this boiling point, coming down to the leaders now to settle their 1-1 score over NJPW’s top title! With the 6-Man Titles changing hands earlier in the night, Naito must put his 200% into assuring the same doesn’t occur here, or it’ll be disaster on New Japan’s waterfront.
As two men that could not be more opposite collide, it’s an intense war over the company’s possession, everyone from fans to wrestlers on the edge of their seats as the last of the NOAH invaders try to leave their mark. KENOH shows nothing but hatred towards Naito for ruining his past chances, whilst Tetsuya savours his every moment in the Sun, having slaved away to hold this belt. A PFS almost does Naito in, whilst the DESTINO does the same for KENOH! Ragdolling the older star with Dragon Suplexes, KENOH sets up for the ENRIN… BUT IN HIS STARDUST PRESS MOMENT, HE MISSES!!! DESTINOOOOOOOOOO!!! ONE! TWO! THREE!!! New Japan remains safe in the hands of Naito!
Tetsuya Naito (c) def. KENOH to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (28:33)
Offering a handshake to KENOH out of respect for their series… the Rogue Fist declines it, though from the look in his fiery eyes, an inkling of acknowledgement is there for Tetsuya. Telling Naito to keep the belt warm for him, he declares he’ll be back sometime again, and when that happens, he’s going to usurp Naito once and for all!
And as they leave with their 50/50 successes, it’s back to LIJ to end the show on their usual note… except, PAC interrupts the tradition. He’s confused, no, he’s incredulous. What are they celebrating here? Failure? Or are they calling it ‘survival’? Is no one going to point out the elephant in the room? Just two months ago they were on top of the world, all draped in gold, but now they’re left with just Naito and the Lucha Bros’s gold. And yet, they’re celebrating? He’s been out here losing sleep over his missing US Title!
If they wish to continue to be taken seriously, they need to act the part. Luckily… he has a solution. They say iron sharpens iron, so rather than fighting these large-scale wars outside their stable… why not have a ‘friendly’ within? Naito has the title and an incredible row of suitors before him, so he should pick one to defend against! Tetsuya seems perturbed by the idea knowing what almost happened the last time LIJ fought within, but as PAC insists, even pointing out how he’s the only one with a clean record over Naito… Tetsuya turns to him and raises the title! If such claims are going to be made, they need to be backed up too! Challenging PAC with his title on the line, a grinning Bastard accepts, bumping his fist!
Burning Spirit - Night Seven (September 25, 2024)
Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, Hiromu Takahashi) vs Death Triangle (PAC & The Lucha Brothers)
Slyly manoeuvring his way into the title rematch he’s desired ever since getting a taste of the gold against Shingo last year, this is more so PAC’s chance to prove himself over the statement he’s seeming to be making. Nonetheless, with various combinations of LIJ facing Death Triangle over the Burning Spirit tour, they supposedly rely on each other to improve their own skill, these 6 especially drawing the very best out of each other. Working more seamlessly with DT than he had LIJ as of late, the freakish chemistry between the AEW lads has a Fear FactoDouble Stomp/Black Arrow combo end Hiromu, PAC grinning as he stares down Naito, the challenge growing closer by day…
Death Triangle def. Los Ingobernables de Japon (18:24)
Giving a brief interview heading into the match at Royal Quest, Naito states that he can’t be certain on what PAC’s intentions are, but all he knows is that no matter what, LIJ sticks together. If this match is what PAC needs for his peace of mind, then it’s all his. All he can hope is the Bastard has the same idea of family in mind.

The relationship between LIJ and PAC has developed into one of the more intriguing dynamics this year, raising a multitude of questions, but now, the true light of it all will be revealed. Whether it’s friendly fire or another coup, Naito’s ready for whatever PAC may happen to have up his sleeve, whilst the Bastard lets his actions do the talking. For once, it’s an utterly no-nonsense showdown between Los members, Tetsuya taking the threat of PAC very seriously, the Jordie clearly driven to make the grand prize his. And as the match rolls on, Naito starts to see parts of himself in PAC with each cheer or cry from his home crowd.
Just like Naito, he’s the incredibly-talented misfit who was overlooked, but unlike a young Naito, PAC doesn’t realise he has the world on his side already despite his quirks. Whilst Naito had to suffer through his changes, PAC’s a made man, and with each near-fall, the crowd see it too, becoming more and more invested in him! On the cusp of his crowning moment, PAC shows no hesitation unlike the Stardust Press, NAILING THE BLACK ARROW!!! ONE! TWO! THR-BUT NAITO KICKS OUT!!! PAC may have ‘it’, but Naito’s operating on an entirely different level as World Champion, and no matter what PAC may have thrown at him, it’s not his moment just yet. DESTINOOOOOOOO!!! ONE! TWO! THREE!!!
Tetsuya Naito (c) def. PAC to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (30:11)
Maybe a different day. Both men propped in opposite corners of the ring, they suck deep for breaths, PAC only taking his eyes off Naito when he spots the title bring brought over to him. That should’ve been his. He should’ve been champion right now, but… he starts tuning in the crowd again. A standing ovation for the hometown boy. Though he may not hold the title right now, he’s still a champion in their eyes… Solace. Always overlooked, all he needed was approval. And now more than ever, he feels he has it. Noticing PAC’s realisation, Naito grins and nods to him, the two bumping fists together, no sour ending on this one.
At least, not between LIJ… OKADA’S HERE!!! After shockingly beating Ospreay for his G1 briefcase earlier in the night, the Rainmaker has his sights on the Tokyo Dome main event, and if things are to be believed, it may be Naito
defending against Kazuchika on the grand stage! The long-time WK rivals locking eyes, there’s a different atmosphere between the Ace and the Dark Ace now. No longer does Okada look upon Naito condescendingly, but with disgust. Though he failed to beat Shingo earlier in the night, Kazuchika’s been vocal all year about the damage he feels LIJ have caused the company.
Where he did everything to purify the promotion with his reign, beating away outsiders, Naito did the exact opposite, bringing them further into their ranks and breaking tradition with a ladder match. With this briefcase in his hand though, he has the power to change that…
but so does he. OSPREAY JOINS IN!!! The man who lost his case earlier in front of his own family, he can’t even look the smug Okada in the eyes. Rather, turning to Naito, he declares his desire to return to WK’s main event to not be over just yet! Against better judgement, he gave Shingo a shot at this title last year and it cost him everything. All he asks is Naito returns the favour! Smirking, Tetsuya tells him ‘earn it’, WK’s main event scene growing all the more interesting!
Battle Autumn - Night Five (October 15, 2024)
Elimination: Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, Death Triangle) vs United Empire (Will Ospreay, Jeff Cobb, Great-O-Khan, Aussie Open)
Desperation drives a man to his darkest pits, and Ospreay is very much there. Banding his troops together one year on since the last LIJ/UE tag of this magnitude, the ante’s upped even higher now, needing to survive an elimination match to receive the match of his desires. Both stables going to war here, all their integrated rivalries of the past years come to a head, the one between Ospreay and Naito lying at the centre of it all. UE get a tough break to start with when Great-O-Khan hits the deck early, Mark Davis following, though a comeback removes the Lucha Bros from the equation!
Cobb goes next, before Ospreay takes out PAC, a double countout subsequently removing the leaders from the equation! Boiling down to Shingo and Kyle, the Aussie Arrow pulls out the underdog performance of his life, channelling all of Ospreay’s moves before a GRIMSTONE ELIMINATES SHINGO! OSPREAY’S HEADED TO KOPW!!! Raising Fletcher onto their shoulders, it’s a grand celebration from UE, Will receiving one last lease on life! As for Naito, he can only stand and wait, a final challenge paved in his path to the Dome.

One year ago, Ospreay’s overzealousness cost him the chance to main event Wrestle Kingdom with the World Title, but now, as it all comes full circle, it’s official, the winner of this match defending against Okada! With that in mind, both men are equally ravenous to make the grand opportunity theirs! Their fourth match together, it’s rife with callbacks, Naito especially making sure to remind Will of the way he beat him in last year’s A Block Finals to get in his head.
To Tetsuya’s surprise though, this matured Ospreay is impervious to his strategies! No matter what the champion throws, the challenger always has an answer, their see-saw saga featuring plenty of nail-biting near-falls that could send either man through, but it’s a TRIAD OF HIDDEN BLADES that ultimately calls it, Ospreay finally reclaiming his throne, a date with destiny set in stone!
Will Ospreay def. Tetsuya Naito (c) to win the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (35:38)
Before WK though, Power Struggle is on the calendar! Featuring the likes of Death Triangle dethroning KONGOH for the NEVER belts for PAC to fully find his place in LIJ, Ren Narita dethroning Katsuyori Shibata for the NEVER Openweight Title, and Shingo Takagi taking the US Title from SANADA, it also sees Ospreay team with Catch 22 against Okada and the two men who ended Francesco Akira and TJP’s legendary reign, SHO & Taiji Ishimori, with UE scoring the vengeful win! And on the final Road To Tokyo Dome special, Ospreay finds a surprising ally in Shibata against Okada and Tanahashi in a HUGE blockbuster tag, CHAOS getting their win back here as Shibata keeps chasing down a rematch with Tana!

Fighting through loss after loss after loss, he finally achieved his clean win over Okada last year to reclaim his World Championship, but now, he must accomplish an even greater task – beat the Final Boss in the Tokyo Dome itself! Failing on both occasions against Okada on NJPW’s biggest stage akin to Okada’s own chase of Tanahashi, it’s his Wrestle Kingdom 10 moment now as
he walks into the Dome as the reigning champion, with the Ace as the challenger! Win and he’s immortalised in history. Lose and Okada resets the company’s entire trajectory. High stakes weighing on Will’s shoulders, it’s time to elevate under pressure!
Entering with WK level entrances to boot, Okada dripping sheer gold, and Ospreay with an entire kingdom of suited individuals accompanying him, they get underway as the bell sounds! And for the first time, it’s Ospreay controlling the opening sequence with the Tanahashi-style headlock! Big brothering Okada, he doesn’t let the Rainmaker out the gates in his own ballpark for a few minutes straight… BEFORE WILL EXPLODES FOR A HANDSPRING ENZUIGIRI!
Okada dodges, going for a GERMAN, but Will flips through, nailing the HOOK KICK, an OSCUTTER coming up empty, Kazu swinging for a ducked RAINMAKER, and it’s a stalemate! Trading forearms, a Lariat dumps Okada out, Ospreay running Kazu’s routine of the guardrail whip and Big Boot, a RUNNING CROSSBODY EATING A DROPKICK! Nailing a TOMBSTONE on the floor, Okada sets up a table at ringside before rolling Ospreay in, the MISSILE DROPKICK and AIR-RAID CRASH NECKBREAKER harping on the neck! ONE! TWO! THR-KICK OUT!
Wrenching the MONEY CLIP, it doesn’t get him far, a BRAINBUSTER catching Okada by surprise! SHOOTING STAR PRESS! ONE! TWO! THR-NO DICE! A PIP PIP CHEERIO eats a BEAUTIFUL DROPKICK, before Okada whips Ospreay at the corner, only for Will to pop him up onto the turnbuckles, slamming Kawada Kicks into his face! CHEEKY NANDOS! Ospreay tries for a LIGER BOMB through the outside table, but Okada drops to the apron! Will charges for a Yakuza Kick, but a LANDSLIDE BLOCKS!!! ONE! TWO! THR-OSPREAY STAYS IN!!!
Hammering the neck, Okada lunges for a RAINMAKER, though a SNAP CUTTER blocks! ROBINSON SPECIAL! Will winds up the CHELSEA GRIN, but it receives a slap and a JOHN WOO DROPKICK! A pair of Short-Arm Rainmakers ricochet off Ospreay, but a Rainmaker is feigned for a DDT! DIVING ELBOW DROP!!! ONE! TWO! THR-WILL KICKS OUT AGAIN!!! A TOMBSTONE is countered by knees, Ospreay whipping Okada at the ropes, Kazu countering a BACK BODY DROP OVER THE ROPES!!!
Will narrowly missing the table, Okada follows with a TOPE CON HILO… BUT OSPREAY MOVES OUT THE WAY, THE RAINMAKER EXPLODING THROUGH THE WOOD!!! Shoving Okada’s lifeless body inside, Ospreay sets up a HIDDEN BLADE!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOOO!!! A STORM BREAKER is blocked, Okada nailing a sick CORNER GERMAN! Dropkick rocks Will, before the TOMBSTONE connects! RAINMAKER’s dodged, Ospreay rebounding into an OSCUTTER- DROPKICK!!! AND A RAINMAKERRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Okada keeps the wrist, going for seconds… OSPREAY NAILS A RAINMAKER OF HIS OWN!!! Wrist still held, Will nails close-range elbows to the neck, before winding up another HIDDEN BLADE- HEAVY RAIN!!! OKADA NAILS HIS OWN HIDDEN BLADE!!! Teasing the STORM BREAKER, Ospreay spins out, dumping Kazu with a LANDSLIDE!!! AND A HIDDEN BLADE… Okada collapses! As Will tries picking him up, a DROPKICK awaits! ANOTHER DROPKICK! AZTEC SUPLEX – A LA ULTIMO DRAGON!!! ONE! TWO! THR-KICK OUT!!!
Okada decks Ospreay with a RAINMAKER, but Will doesn’t go down fully, Kazu nailing a SECOND! Going for the Ripcord this time… RAINHAM MAKER!!! ONE! TWO! THR-OKADA KICKS OUT!!! ESSEX DESTROYER!!! ONE! TWO! THR-ANOTHER KICK OUT!!! Cracking a HIDDEN BLADE off Okada’s nose, an OSCUTTER follows, before he floats into a STORM BREAKER- FALLING RAINMAKERRRRRRR!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Okada smelling blood, he tries for another, AND A HIDDEN BLADE CONNECTS AT THE SAME TIME!!! Keeping hold, the two knock each other loopy with one free arm… OSCUTTER’S CAUGHT WITH A TOMBSTONE!!! Okada picks him back up, going for a SPINNING TOMBSTONE- OSPREAY REVERSES INTO A SPIKE PILEDRIVER!!! Ripcord… HIDDEN BLADE!!! AND A STORM BREAKER!!! Hoisting him up for one more… A SECOND STORM BREAKERRRRRRRRRRR!!! ONE! TWO! THREE!!!
Will Ospreay (c) def. Kazuchika Okada to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (40:51)
HE’S DONE IT! OSPREAY’S FINALLY SURPASSED THE ACE ON HIS OWN STAGE! No longer is Okada himself anymore, but rather the Tanahashi to Ospreay’s Okada, the cycle continuing. And like his counterpart 9 years ago, Kazu leaves as empty-handed as he walked in for the first time in a decade, the times officially changing! And as sunlight washes over the Land of the Rising Sun, a new dawn is revealed. The dawn of the Ospreay Era.
Epilogue
Heading into 2025, NJPW is rife with changes, seeing more of the once Young Lion names step up as the likes of Tanahashi and Naito begin to slow down. CHAOS features a massive shakeup the following night as Shinsuke Nakamura returns, kickstarting his road to retirement, having been vocal in his interest of facing Tanahashi, proceeding to feud with Okada over his failures. As for Ospreay, his reign runs until Sakura Genesis, where one NJC Winner Katsuyori Shibata finally dethrones him 8 years on from his loss to Okada, though Will’s time with the title is far from over yet, remaining an integral part of the picture alongside ZSJ, Shingo, and more.

2023.05.27 23:43 AllBritsArePedos Divest Reviews: Hacksaw Ridge (The Movie)
It sucks really bad, I read The Unlikeliest Hero at my local library when I lived in America as a kid so I can give you most of the details on Desmond Doss, the character in the film is entirely unrelated to the real life man.
I also hate Mel Gibson because he has made me empathize with dirty Anglos who have been whining for 3 decades about how heavily fictionalized Braveheart was.
- They obfuscate the fact Desmond was a devout Seventh Day Adventist to make him less abrasive to other Christians who generally hate SDA members because of their adherence to Jewish law rather than pagan law like conventional christians.
- Doss was a lifelong vegetarian, in the unlikeliest hero they mention he traded away his meat (along with cigarettes and coffee because the SDA doesn't like those either) to other soldiers and supplemented his rations with coconuts that he would climb up trees to get. In the movie they show his family sitting down for a dinner of fried chicken in one scene.
- His father William was never abusive to his family, i'm guessing Mel Gibson was probably projecting his own actions as a father and husband onto Will. The only mention of Will in the book was that he worked on Saturdays, the SDA Sabbath and drank alcohol during the great depression and his wife Bertha convinced him to give it up and then God intervened and gave him enough work so that they could make ends meet.
- Doss never almost bricked his brother to death or threatened his father with a gun as a catalyst to his pacifism he was simply a very devout member of the SDA church, the opening chapter of The Unlikeliest Hero makes this very clear the closest thing to a movie scene is mention of how he would stare at a painting in their parlor of Cain murdering Abel.
- Doss was never beaten by American troops in boot camp, his father also never saved him from a court martial or was a WWI veteran. The general military apparatus already accepted pacifists but there was friction between him and specific actors within the Army who disliked his devout religiosity and criticized his pacifism considering his position in frontline combat. The first scene in the book is about his fellow trainees mocking him while he kneels down in prayer in the barracks before going to bed.
- The Japanese never feigned surrender to any unit Doss was attached to, not like they would have accepted it anyways. One time Doss was threatened by another soldier for attempting to treat a wounded Japanese soldier.
- Desmond’s Brother Harold served in the Navy not the Army.
- Doss never used himself as bait to try and kill an enemy sniper, that is based on an urban legend about a Junior officer using himself as bait in Normandy against a Nazi sniper (which is just hilariously stupid when you think about it.) The one time he actually helped kill someone was when he helped carry a crate full of grenades to the frontline and he was very much ashamed of what he had done.
- Doss wore a mustache during his military service and looked much dirtier when he was on Okinawa than in the film. There is a photo of him from a press event after he was recommended for a Medal of Honor but before he got wounded where they had him clean up and gave him a new uniform, his old uniform was stained brown from all the dried blood from people he had been treating.
Anyways I can think of 4 things that were actually historical events
- He rescued somewhere between 50-100 men from Hacksaw Ridge
- He led a Sabbath service before the attack he was wounded in
- He kissed his future wife without her consent on their first date
As for things that were missing from the story (that I can remember off the top of my head)
- Doss served at Guam and Leyte earning a Bronze star at each battle
- Doss drug a Catholic friend named Glenn who had been shot by a sniper for about 20 minutes while prone to get him out of the open field he was trapped in. The only reason he survived is because the sniper was so awestruck by his selflessness that he couldn’t bring himself to shoot Doss.
- Doss raised his arm out of a foxhole and into the line of enemy fire with bullets whizzing by in order to allow gravity to feed blood plasma into a wounded officer’s IV properly
- When Doss was being carried by stretcher after being wounded he spotted another soldier who was wounded worse than he was and voluntarily pulled himself off the stretcher and forced the bearers to take the other soldier against their objections.
- While Doss was left on the ground wounded he came across another wounded soldier and treated him with field craft (including making a rifle stock into a splint for him) and they carried each other back closer to the aid station.
My personal opinion is that Doss is a hero without question. His actions are even more impressive when you consider that God and Christianity are fake so God never made him invincible like Samson from the bible and God didn't just let him get wounded 4 times to give a nice climactic movie end to his military service or to troll him by working in mysterious ways.
He’s also a hypocrite because he was part of a mechanism for inflicting extreme violence to shape the face of the world and so he couldn’t really divorce himself from those efforts even if all he did was carry some grenades for other soldiers. But at the same time he’s a lot better than pretty much anyone I know and we’re all hypocritical to some extent so I don’t want you to think that I am chastising him, I am just being honest rather than deluding you.
Also the idea that a medic needs to carry a gun is pretty stupid anyways even if the Japanese didn't follow the Geneva Convention about treating non-combatants or whatever. Less guns means that he has more space to carry medical supplies and equipment or wounded men like the 50-100 he rescued and he's less likely to accidentally shoot himself or have a Friendly Fire incident (though that would really only happen if there had been British or Canadian people on Okinawa)
Finally while the film Hacksaw Ridge is a disgusting abomination birthed of Mother Harlot Hollywood and the efforts of a nasty cretin like Mel Gibson it should be noted that since God isn’t real using Doss’ Name and Life Story like allowed Doss to provide for his family beyond the grave with money and attention. Which is what all westerners really crave.
It’s unlikely that a more realistic, serious or intelligent version of Hacksaw Ridge that told the story of Desmond Doss honestly would have been as successful. Considering the fact that Seventh Day Adventists follow Kosher law and the Jewish Sabbath and this film was released in 2016 on the heels of Trump mania I would have expected a film that even said “Seventh Day Adventist” would have a dude from 4chan livestreaming a mass shooting at the premiere of the film at his local theater.

"If you knew me, the real me, you wouldn't be wondering if we're gonna live or die. Because you'd know I can keep this up as long as I need to. I'm Toph Beifong, the greatest earthbender of all time."
History: Born a blind girl sheltered by her wealthy parents, Toph learned earthbending in secret from the badgermoles of Gaoling. Secretly becoming the Earth Rumble champion known as the Blind Bandit, Toph's true destiny arrived when she joined the Avatar as his earthbending master. In travelling the world with Avatar Aang, Toph became by many accounts the greatest earthbender of her time.
After saving the world, and inventing metalbending along the way, Toph became an influential figure. She started the Toph Beifong Metalbending Academy to spread knowledge of the art, became chief of the Republic City police, and aided in the industrialization that helped modernize the world. Though she retired in her old age as a recluse, Toph still periodically answered the call to duty whenever the Avatar needed her.
Powers: Toph controls earth with a unique bending style, built primarily around her "seismic sense" that allows her compensate for her blindness by detecting and predicting movement through the vibrations around her. She later developed the art of metalbending she integrated into her combat style.

So much for controversy. UCLA made the statement they had to, taking out Kentucky and running the table to be the only unbeaten team remaining. The race now is for the remainder of the Top 5, as the Power Five seem to have a monopoly on the games. 2023.05.27 19:18 CFUsOrFuckOff Why Ukraine is the turning point for humanity and what must be done
This is not a political position, but a thermodynamic one. The world is heading from a time of excess to a time of scarcity. With more people enjoying fewer comforts, humanity is faced with the direction it takes for the rest of our species' future on this planet and others: we can't fight each other for what's left or we can share with each other what we need.
This isn't - or has never before been - a serious question because this world has never felt universal hardship before. In the past, when any major scarcity was faced (with the exception of 536) there was always a neighboring ally to buffer the loss or an enemy to subjugate; until now, there has always been more. Climate change is a global pressure on a globalized economy. There are no external economies that are thriving to prop up the luxuries we've come to feel entitled to. When that luxury can no longer be provided, people are trained to blame each other and ask for the boss to complain about our level of service.
This is the attitude fueling the shift to the right "all this liberal 'science' bullshit has turned my country into a place i dont recognize. Time to get my country in order!", but like how the long term side effects of COVID will be blamed on the vaccine rather than the virus, humans are apparently hardwired to look for a person or institution that's responsible for their problems, because they live in a world that's manifestly run by humanity. Politicians don't help with this because they promise change that a large bureaucracy isn't capable of... every time they step in front of a mic. Politicians feed the sense that the world is divided into teams and the team that's running things is doing harm. They are the anti-vax evangelists of a world simply running out of good time as a result of spending all the good time since the end of WWII.
Humanity cannot fly. That shouldn't be arguable. It's a fundamental limit of our physiology that cannot be overcome without shedding everything about us that makes us human; brains are heavy. When we get on a plane, we are not 'flying', we are taking a bus full of people, strapping a rocket engine to it, and firing it in a ballistic trajectory toward our destination. For all the celebration of progress in the tech age, we still can't figure out how to move something forward without throwing something out the back. That's not just why planes are absurd but why they cannot continue to be considered a good invention. Think of how much fuel would need to be burned to rocket yourself across a lawn, let alone through the sky; it's an insane amount of fuel and an absurd justification for burning it, especially virtually all domestic travel can be accomplished by rail or bus... which also use the same principle of throwing out enough exhaust gasses out the back to displace the weight of the thing that's burning the fuel. When this thing is on the ground, it burns much less fuel than pushing it through the sky.
Humanity assumes novelty is benign. Im not sure if this is one of the hidden rules about capitalism that we all follow as a culture "have you seen the new x!? It's amazing and works way better than x-1!", or if we're evolutionarily programmed to assume new is good and the direction we should be heading in. In either case, it has allowed us to adopt planetary destruction as a necessary aspect of each of our lives. It isn't anything we do consciously, it is the background of our lives that feeds big industry and steals time from the future. It's our commute, our food, our total acceptance that running a furnace is fine despite getting all worked up about oil spills and fires when we see them uncontained. The maze we all run was designed to have as much distance as possible between you and the cheese at the end so you would spend half or more of your cheese burning calories to get from the start to the finish and repeat all over. It is why people feel the problem is too big for them: there is nothing one person can change in the part of the life they control that will redirect the planetary system away from collapse because it is the pattern of our lives that is the destructive part.
Since our shared pattern is so destructive, it is self limiting. We are feeling the effects of that now with COVID (forests being pushed toward ecological breakdown leads animals to look for new territory and new food, leading to conflict with species already there and malnutrition from food with an incomplete nutrient balance), extreme weather doing damage to vital infrastructure and shipping losses.
Which brings us back to Ukraine. The world needs a beacon. A Western country with the courage to model a sustainable lifestyle through active change. I assumed that would have been Canada but I was wrong. Instead, with Ukraine being forced to rebuild in a time where supplies have never been more expensive, and in a state where its people have gotten used to living without luxury, it can either be an incubator for redesigning human life to restore the environment rather than destroy it.
There is no stronger people to take on such a challenge and the world that has been paying for weapons to defend. If we can send explosives to break, we must send hands, tools, and materials to rebuild. If we rebuild the same way, the world will fall into war since the causal push of all existing conflict is space and resources or their control, and we will continue to pretend that individual human choices are to blame for war. We will continue to refuse to look deeper and will soon find ourselves in a position where taking up arms seems like the only solution left to us. If, on the other hand, the rest of us find the courage to look one step deeper and ask "why is the world falling to war? What is driving conflict?", we will see it is the same thing driving our thirst for more luxury and, hopefully, realize that the only survivable path to the future is one where we change our behavior to relieve the force that's pushing us in that direction.
When more is never enough, less is a horrifying concept. Without a model for how to happily live as a human in a self sufficient community, there will be no "green transition", there will only be more disease, more scarcity, and more conflict on the edge of that scarcity. The more each of us takes, the more we contribute to conflict around the world.
There is no way to make a car "green", just like there is no way to make a compostable battery. The problem isnt the means of conveyance, it is the distance we need to cover to survive. Whether or not we change our habits to adapt to this reality is inconsequential to its eventuality, it just seems absurd to ignore the reality of hardship until you're being strangled by it simply to "enjoy the time you have left".
If the war in Ukraine ends and the world moves in to turn it into the first net zero country, there is hope for a future for our species. If we act like everything was fine until a mad man decided to invade a sovereign country, war will spread like a fog descending on the world. Demands will be met by force as a result of people pushing for impossibly cheap access to resources. Slavery will return as the foundation of the global economy and, in all this horror, we will be hastening and worsening our own conditions.
Like a train whose tracks go over the grand canyon, humanity needs one last train stop to see what it looks like to live somewhere other than a train at constantly increasing speed. We need a model for a future that is too nebulous to explain: it must be seen and experienced, how much living can be done as humans on and with the land. If nothing else but to illustrate that a train going over a cliff was not a predetermined consequence of "human progress", and that a choice has been made to define that progress with the inventions of a few men, all of which run by stealing energy from the past and stability from the future. It would allow us to see the train from the outside and force us to question the value of a murder-suicide pact.
For the demonstration to be compelling, there can be no or very little carbon footprint for the country. Structures must be built from salvaged (cheap) material, focusing on isolated but functional communities.
We have already lost the battle to save most of what we recognize in our world but we don't need to continue to burn it all down. Since there is no more track for this paradigm, there is no consequence for trying something new and certain death and misery by doing the same. This message can be shared in every possible way, but without a demonstration of what it looks like on a cultural level, we will never have the discussion that leads to the choice to keep going or get off the death train.
We are not the creations or technology we obsess over, we are an ape descended species on a planet we're stuck with and have killed 80% of in 50 years. We cannot survive on a lifeless world because we are alive and life feeds on life to survive. I have a hard time getting people to relate to the rest of the living world as a branch of the same tree we belong to because of how separated we are from other life. The more life that's lost, the less we'll care about it being gone and the more committed we will be to our preoccupations to avoid having to face reality.
The cowardice ive encountered when it comes to facing reality has been incredibly disappointing and disturbing. We will pass laws in our country to prevent poaching and hunting in other countries where our emissions and lifestyle -guided by our laws- are pushing the same animals to total extinction. We will talk about this from a position of moral superiority, only, and will take no responsibility for the conditions our behavior has already created. There is no "border crisis", there are people being pushed out of their homes by new weather that has made those homes incompatible with survival. I've heard lots of Americans talking about moving north in response to climate shifts as if that is something completely different from what is happening on their southern border or in Europe. No one leaves their ancestral home to cause problems in another country, but if that country is responsible for the force that pushed them out, they should either stop pushing people out of their homes or open their borders. To refuse either is to accept that you live a life of evil and as the person that will one day deny you shelter to protect what they have.
These a new times with new stakes and new bad guys. The only good thing about being the bad guy is you can choose to stop, while your victims can only beg you to stop and, eventually, resist/insist on a different course. It is up to each and all of us how the future plays out. The party is over. No one gets to sit this out.

2023.05.27 18:26 discreditcampaign917 May 27, 2023 Update
Re:
Over the past year and a half, following my complaint to the EEOC, I have continuously been subjected to harassment and retaliation by my former employer. The situation escalated when I came across an audiotape revealing the company's VP of Finance discussing financial fraud. I have attached my EEOC complaint and rebuttal to provide you with a better understanding of this situation. The company has embarked on a campaign of retaliation and attempts to cover up the truth. Recently, I discovered that my phone was under surveillance by private investigators hired by my previous employer, Socure Inc. As mentioned earlier, this harassment began at my local YMCA, where multiple individuals were instructed to participate in a planned campaign targeting me. Socure extended their actions beyond the YMCA by continuously tracking my cellphone's location wherever I went. Initially, I suspected I was being followed, but I later realized that my phone had been compromised. My messages and calls were being monitored, and even my home internet seemed to be tapped into. Furthermore, I have reason to believe that my bank transactions were being monitored as well. I am being targeted because I disclosed illegal activities involving the VP of Finance, which he was afraid to share. I’m one hundred percent certain that Socure hacked into my cellphone to eavesdrop on all conversations. Any and all things that I discuss with my wife would later be discussed amongst gym goers, at multiple Mosque, and random places I often visit. I have attached my EEOC compliant for further assessment of this situation.

Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA Director, Sonia Atherly - Staged Office Phone Video Recording:
Sonia Atherly, the director of the Bedstuy YMCA, participated in a retaliatory campaign. On September 29, 2022, she requested a meeting with me in her office. During our conversation, she pulled out her phone and began recording from her work monitor, alleging that a masked individual had entered the gym. She even asked me to view the video footage. While I complied, her phone continued recording, capturing my voice in the process. This action appears to be an attempt to counter the accusations made by the VP of Finance regarding fraudulent activities and manipulate my voice recordings to paint a negative picture of my behavior. In response to my concerns, the YMCA director provided the following reply: "Hi Lou. I believe that it was on Tuesday, and I was actually taking photos, so no, your voice would not have been captured in any way. To be clear, we do not record conversations at the Y in any way, shape, or form unless we have signed event waivers. I hope this clarifies the matter for you." On September 30, 2022, Sonia orchestrated an incident where the same individual showed up at the front desk as I was leaving, hoping to provoke a response from me and involve me in their investigation. For months, non-members of the YMCA were allowed to come into the facility and harass me while surveillance cameras were purposely turned off to destroy any possible evidence.
Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA Program Coordinator, Jeff (Damian Best):
Upon my arrival at the basketball gym, Jeff, the program coordinator, and a parent with her child were already present. After requesting Jeff to wait a few more minutes, the parent engaged in a heated argument with him, demanding to know why her child couldn't participate since no one else was there. I reassured her that while I didn't mind, Jeff was responsible for setting the rules. She eventually left the gym in an angry state. Their intention was to have me report the incident to management and portray me as someone who constantly complains. On October 4, 2022, I sent an email to myself for record-keeping purposes.
Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA Member, Ade (last name starting with "A"):
On Saturday, October 8, 2022, Ade and I agreed to meet for a late lunch at "The Green Place" in Brooklyn. I noticed that he kept referencing financial figures related to specific people he worked with. I suspect he has also been recruited to participate in Socure's retaliation against me. Their goal is to capture recordings of me to use them against me, claiming that I habitually record people. Ade also expressed dissatisfaction with the YMCA's adult open gym times during Saturday's basketball hours. He mentioned having discussed it with the front desk. On October 9, 2022, Ade sent me a screenshot of the YMCA's response to his request. It's important to note that I never made any complaints. As someone who lives near the YMCA and often wakes up early, I told him, "I don't want to play." Once again, Socure is attempting to build a case portraying me as someone who incessantly complains and records people to divert attention from their own misconduct. Multiple members were instructed to complain to me so that my name can be implicated. I believe that individuals are being compensated to assist them. In early May 2023, both Ade and Stephin Roberts repeatedly interrupted my workout in an attempt to initiate a conversation with me.
Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA member, Stephin Roberts - Staged information gathering:
Stephin Roberts, a fellow YMCA member, unexpectedly called me after we crossed paths at the gym, which was an unusual occurrence. We exchanged brief greetings, and I proceeded with my workout. I suspect that his intention in calling me was to record our conversation and use it against me, falsely claiming that I frequently record people, which is entirely untrue. Given that my cellphone was being tracked, it seemed that whenever I left my home, I would coincidentally encounter Mr. Roberts. He had been instructed to fabricate a false DUI incident to elicit personal information from me regarding a case on my record that had been expunged. During our conversation, I shared a past experience of mine involving a car accident I had when I was younger while dating someone, as well as my advice on expungement, recounting a personal incident that happened to me. At the time, I thought Mr. Roberts was a genuine person with good intentions. I believe Socure will be attempting to coordinate and get me arrested for theft or burglary based on the previous expunged records, trying to paint a negative image of who I am. I believe Stephin Roberts has been recording me as a tactic instructed by Socure's private investigator.
Friend from Downtown YMCA Brooklyn whom I haven't spoken with in two years, Andre Nelson at Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA:
I haven't had any communication with Andre Nelson for more than two years. However, he unexpectedly appeared at the gym I regularly attend on a Wednesday evening, despite it not being in close proximity to his residence. Subsequently, Mr. Nelson started frequenting the gym with his friend Austin Hill. Together, they began coordinating with YMCA members, informing them about my situation with Socure. Within one week, one of Austin Hill's Facebook friends reached out to me, mentioning a potential collaboration with someone they knew, namely Austin Hill. As I stated, I've never met Mr. Hill nor had any connection with people he knew outside of Mr. Nelson. When I encountered Mr. Hill during the following open gym session, he acted as though nothing had transpired, and I played along. Additionally, Austin requested certain documents from me for his business, but I never fulfilled his request. To confirm my suspicions that Austin was attempting to set me up, I orchestrated an event by telling him, "Yeah, man, girls don't care if you have a ring on. They will approach you. Come to this bar tonight." Upon my arrival at the bar a few minutes later, a woman wearing a wedding band tried to get my attention. However, I sensed that it was a staged occurrence. When Andre Nelson and Austin Hill arrived, they infiltrated the group of members, instructing them to provoke me during the basketball game while secretly recording my reactions. At one point, a member named Justin threw a water bottle, and the situation escalated.
Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA member, Trevor - Staged information gathering:
Trevor started asking and mentioning multiple work-related questions. On October 7, 2023, he mentioned having a quarterly review and asked for suggestions. Within weeks later, Trevor asked me if I knew any lawyers as he was dealing with a housemaid who was suing him. This same situation happened with more than two other members (Stephin Roberts, Kadeem Kirsten) in which they asked me attorney-related questions. I believe he was instructed to record our conversations.
Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA member, Torrell Taylor:
As previously mentioned, I believe that the YMCA's Director is monitoring my interactions with other gym members in order to collaborate with them. Their objective is to falsely claim that "Lou is influencing people to document incidents," all with the intention of tarnishing my reputation. Additionally, Socure allegedly requested Torrell to open a restaurant in downtown Brooklyn as part of their scheme to build a case against me. YMCA member Justin repeatedly approached me, informing me that Torrell had opened a restaurant with poor-quality food and suggested I visit. Upon receiving this information from Torrell himself, I decided to pay the restaurant a visit. However, Torrell was not present during my first visit. I attempted a second visit, only to discover that the restaurant was closed. When I texted Torrell to inquire about the closure, he responded that there had been an issue with the owner's licensing. It is apparent to me that this was a staged event orchestrated by Socure to fabricate a case against me by falsely claiming that I reported violations against Torrell's restaurant. As mentioned earlier, I strongly believe that my phone was being tracked, and it is possible that a separate line was used to make false reports under my information.
Furthermore, my emails were also subjected to hacking.
Wireless Earbuds Planned at the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA open gym by Kadeem Kirsten - early 2022:
To ensure my privacy and personal space during the YMCA open gym sessions, I started choosing a spot away from others. I made sure to thoroughly clean the area where I sat, removing any bottles, wipes, or other items. After finishing my workout, I briefly went to the bathroom, and upon my return, I noticed a wireless earbud near the window close to my chair. I suspect that Khadim Kirsten intentionally placed the earbud there as he kept watching me closely. Mr. Kirsten also asked me for legal advice as well as a UX Designer, the same exact topic that Gavin Tseng asked me. Mr. Kirsten is one of those new members who never came to the YMCA. Upon rejecting Socure's settlement offer in January 2023, that's when all of these new members started coming to open basketball nights.
Mosque Khalifa on Bedford Ave: Sept 2, 2022, at 120 Madison St, Brooklyn, NY, United States, New York:
During the service at Mosque Khalifa on Bedford Ave, the preacher persistently addressed a specific topic related to my case. He made references to "a brother within this community, one of our own, who made a recording" in an apparent attempt to divert attention to the tape I had recorded. Following my complaint to the EEOC through email, the recording was promptly deleted on the same day, which I later submitted to the EEOC. I started attending Islamic Mission of America/Dawood Mosque at 143 State St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, and immediately, I was followed by an individual who repeatedly tried to have a conversation with me. I was also followed to a Mosque in Harlem, NY.
T-Mobile Visit Tracking / Unauthorized new number added at 574 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217:
Concerned about the security of my internet connection with Verizon, I visited T-Mobile to add a new line specifically for internet access. To my surprise, shortly after arriving at the store, a male approached the same register I was standing at and started asking questions. A few days after leaving the store, I discovered that a new phone line had been added to my T-Mobile account without my knowledge or consent. I promptly contacted T-Mobile customer service to inquire about the data usage associated with that particular number, but unfortunately, I did not receive the requested information. I believe Socure hacked my home network, such as my laptop, tablet, Television and home camera. For the past year and a half, Socure has managed to view all of my browsing history. I believe they kept contacting lawyers that I reached out to after every visit I made on their website to avoid me from being represented. In additional, after noticing that my email accounts were hacked, I wrote a statement indicating that my emails were hacked in which I got notarized at TD Bank.
Grocery Shopping Brooklyn:
During my visit to the local supermarket, I noticed several individuals following me closely, paying particular attention to the food items I was selecting and the card I used for payment. I believe I was being followed long before I started to notice.
* May 8, 2023, at 1420 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11216
* May 1, 2023, at 1420 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11216
Online Job Targeting:
I have been repeatedly targeted for specific jobs and companies, which I believe are staged by Socure, just as they did by involving me in a company backed by their investors to stage multiple events against me while interfering with my employment. I was lured into Plural, formerly known as Civic Eagle, where multiple African American candidates who did not qualify were being hired without my knowledge. All whom I’ve never spoke with. I suspect that Socure somehow gained access to my T-Mobile account and requested my entire call history to monitor my communications. Furthermore, I believe that when I sought legal counsel after receiving the EEOC's authorization to file a lawsuit, Socure clandestinely intervened in my calls to every law firm I contacted.
Puerto Rico Vacation on Dec 23, 2022:
Upon our arrival at our room in Puerto Rico, we noticed a black male who entered a room adjacent to ours shortly after us. However, after a couple of days, we did not see him again.
During a visit to a restaurant in Puerto Rico, I recognized the hostess as the same woman I had encountered multiple times at the YMCA. She had her head covered with a white scarf. As I was seated facing the entrance, she deliberately made eye contact with me, seemingly aware that I recognized her. After finishing lunch, this same woman followed us to the waterfront and watched us closely.
Neighbor Tracking Movement at 322 Gates Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11216:
Every time I left my building, I noticed a consistent pattern where the neighbor from 5F would coincidentally head towards the elevator, wait in the lobby, and enter the building exactly at the same time. This behavior raised suspicions and led me to believe that individuals from 5A were strategically positioned next door, potentially tapping our walls to eavesdrop on our conversations. The neighbor in 5A, whom I knew through the YMCA, repeatedly complained about the building while urging me to submit a work order. I also suspect that Socure assisted one of my former neighbors, Serdar Cam, in moving into the building after they discovered my text messages about potentially moving there. Immediately after moving in, Serdar started complaining as well. I believe Socure was involved in placing a previous female tenant in the building, who also complained to me on multiple occasions about the building.
Uber License Training:
Once again, Socure monitored the location of my phone and deployed individuals to the classroom where I was attending classes in Long Island City in early March 2023. After completing the classes, I became too afraid of potentially facing false rider allegations.
New Open Gym Invitation by Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA member Ethan, Andre Nelson was present on March 2, 2023, at 300 Adelphi, Brooklyn, NY 11205:
Ethan, a fellow YMCA member, invited me to join him at a nearby gym. To my surprise, Andre Nelson was also in attendance. While playing on the court, I noticed one of the players guarding me had a conspicuous microphone attached to them, and an Asian woman diligently captured footage from different angles with a video camera. I believe they were recording my voice and actions on the court. Additionally, it seems that after complaining about what happened at the YMCA, members are being instructed to engage me outside the YMCA to diffuse the situation. This incident further raised my suspicion that our apartment might be under surveillance, as I had previously mentioned Andre Nelson's presence at the open gym to my wife. Moreover, during the open run, I noticed the unexpected presence of multiple YMCA members from the Downtown Brooklyn location, whom I hadn't encountered in the past four years. I firmly believe that Andre Nelson orchestrated their participation and that they were strategically placed as collaborators by Socure.
New Gym Invites
After fully understanding that I knew about all of the plans in place at the YMCA, with the help of the YMCA Director, Sonia Atherly, multiple members were told to invite me to other gyms to built a campaign of “ this is Lou everywhere he goes”. Over six plus individuals were asked to invite me to new open gyms and men’s league to play in. This is all to avoid further problems at the gym.
Real Estate / Startup Venture Inquiry by Gavin Tseng:
Due to ongoing targeting, I decided to distance myself from everyone for months. However, my friend Gavin Tseng, whom I knew while living in Downtown Brooklyn, repeatedly invited me to his upstate home and wanted me to see properties he was interested in purchasing. It was quite unusual that Mr. Tseng would frequently text me, asking about my availability on specific days. I suspect that Mr. Tseng was recording our conversations during the trips and multiple phone calls, where he sought my help with UX Designing for his apartment rental car service. I believe Socure conducted research on my past work history, including my involvement in a Delegate campaign in Maryland for a real estate professional. I suspect that Socure fabricated false accusations against this individual and used my information to create misleading claims, leveraging my network and devices.
Subways / Stores Staged Evidence Building:
Regardless of the subway station I find myself in, I consistently experience being followed by random individuals who are instructed to approach me closely while holding their cellphones up to my face and posing questions. On multiple occasions, I recall three females approaching me seeking guidance regarding subway directions, and I willingly offered my assistance. However, I have recently become aware that individuals, including camera operators, have been capturing these interactions on film as part of what appears to be a deliberate campaign to discredit me.
March 28, 2023 - Travel to Milwaukee:
While traveling to Milwaukee for a getaway from my wife after several disputes, I noticed that I was being followed at the airport. The surveillance continued throughout my stay at the Airbnb located at 1028 East Juneau Avenue, Unit 416, Milwaukee, WI 53202, from March 28, 2023, to April 11, 2023. I also experienced being followed at the Hertz car rental at 804 Vel R. Phillips Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53203, on April 6, 2023, and at the Pleasant Prairie Premium Outlet at 11211 120th Ave, Pleasant Prairie, WI 53158, on the same day.
April 12, 2023 - Returning back from Milwaukee:
Immediately after arriving back in New York City from my two-week vacation, at around 3:45 pm ET, just two minutes after landing, I received a text message from a YMCA member whom I hadn't communicated with in over three weeks. The message mentioned something along the lines of "See you tonight," which I promptly deleted. This unmistakable occurrence served as a clear indication that my phone was under surveillance and being tracked.
April 21, 2023 & May 7, 2023 - Vitamin Shoppe at 12 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217:
As I entered the Vitamin Shoppe in Downtown Brooklyn on Atlantic Ave, I noticed that I was being followed. While at the checkout counter, an African American gentleman positioned himself next to me, seemingly eavesdropping on my account information and the items I was purchasing. I strongly suspect that a similar incident occurred during my previous visit on April 21, 2023, although I was not actively observing at that time.
On May 6, 2023, between 11:30 am - 12:45 pm - JFK AirTrain:
Once again, I became aware that my phone was being tracked. I accompanied my wife to the airport as she was departing for Milwaukee. Upon arriving at the station, an assertive African American woman in her late 30s hurriedly approached us, despite the presence of multiple station operators. She aggressively stopped us and began asking for directions. Sensing something amiss, I promptly distanced myself from the situation while my wife attempted to assist her with the directions.
Friday, May 11, 2023 at Costco Eyewear at 517 E 117th St, New York, NY 10035: While I was sharing my information, a woman in her late 50s approached the counter and closely observed my personal details. I have come to believe that Socure has someone at Chase informing them of my location whenever I use my Chase bank card. The day before, I made purchases with my Chase card at Costco.
Friday, May 11, 2023 at Costco at 517 E 117th St, New York, NY 10035: While conversing with a product representative at Costco, a young female employee in her late teens or early twenties approached with an older Senegalese gentleman in his late 60s. The gentleman sought assistance with a product due to his limited English proficiency. As he showed me his phone up close, I noticed someone recording our interaction from a distance. Once again, I felt as though I was being followed. It seems that a private investigator was aware of my recent purchase of fish oil at Vitamin Shoppe on May 7, 2023, as well as my pursuit of becoming a personal trainer. They orchestrated the scenario with the gentleman asking me specific questions about fish oil. It's worth noting that the material I was studying for personal training explicitly states that trainers should not recommend any medication to individuals.
Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Hoyt Station in Brooklyn: Once more, I found myself being followed into the train station. While I was waiting there, a woman approached me once again, seeking directions. Without hesitation, I gestured towards someone else nearby and firmly replied, "No, ask her." Interestingly, there was a man across the platform holding two cameras, capturing the entire interaction between us. Following the unsuccessful attempt, the woman conversed with the man briefly before they both boarded the train.
Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Bedford and Quincy in Brooklyn: As I neared my apartment building, I noticed two cameramen once again attempting to record me. Sensing their presence and their intention to cross the street, I quickly changed course and crossed over to the other side, putting some distance between us.
Saturday, May 13, 2023 - TD Bank at 957 Marcy Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11216: While I was withdrawing cash from the ATM, a white male in his late 20s, accompanied by a dog, was recording me from outside. I also believe Socure did some digging into all of my transactions at my local banks, such as Chase and TD Bank.
Saturday, May 13, 2023 - Credit Card information altered: When I logged into my Discover Credit Card account, I observed that my information had been modified.
Monday, May 14, 2023 - Best Buy Brooklyn at 625 Atlantic Ave Ste A7, Brooklyn, NY 11217: Upon reaching the printing department at 12:14 pm ET, I was harassed by an African American woman in her late 60s. I ignored her and left through the opposite side, but she continued to follow me and tried to engage in a conversation.
Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at Target 517 E 117th St Suite 201, New York, NY 10035, at 10:46 am ET: Upon realizing that I was aware of the cover-up occurring, where individuals were tailing me and inquiring with their phones in hand, Socure strategically positioned an African gentleman near the entrance of the targeted bathroom. They had been closely observing my actions. Remarkably, this man was dressed identically to me during the incident that unfolded on Friday, May 11, 2023
While waiting in line, I believe a Senegalese couple were instructed to chat about illegal activities intentionally while I was behind them and they absurdly moved to another line.
Tuesday, May 16, 2023 - Cohen’s Fashion Optical at 86 W 125th St, New York, NY 10027: While retrieving my reading glasses from Costco, I discovered that the prescription was stronger than what was indicated in the eye examination. The lenses ended up negatively impacting my vision. I requested to review the physician's notes from the exam, but despite waiting for over 30 minutes, they were unable to provide any documentation as the physician was acting very strange. Instead, they gave me evasive responses, leading me to ultimately leave without a resolution.
May 18, 2023 - Chase Bank at 1380 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11216 @ 12 PM ET: Around 12 PM ET on May 18, 2023, at Chase Bank on Fulton Ave in Brooklyn, I experienced another incident I believe involves Socure. An individual was sent to tail me, and it began at TD Bank where this person approached the teller in an ostentatious manner, loudly expressing their intentions. I suspect this encounter was being recorded in an attempt to frame a robbery on me. It seems that Socure is continuously monitoring my activities, possibly as a diversion from the fact that their former CFO was untrustworthy. Regardless of where I go, I am constantly being followed, with new tactics being devised every time I step outside my home.
I’m writing to put a stop to this targeting and ongoing harassment.

2023.05.27 14:02 Deatthstar This is what paradox games looks like to people who don't play them, according to my friend.
| I love paradox games. I play them all the time. A good friend of mine made and sent me this and said "how come every game you play looks like this?" I laughed, ya know, cuz it's funny. But then I remembered he doesn't like paradox games. He detests them. I just thought it was interesting how the game play is perceived by people who don't enjoy the games. To him its garbage on a screen. To us it's an immersive world where we make our own stories and histories. submitted by Deatthstar to paradoxplaza [link] [comments] |

2023.05.27 09:25 koumak Peter Dekker spreading misconceptions about East Asian archery history
Peter Dekker constantly pushes his own website manchuarchery wherever he can in Asian archery related sites.
Dekker claimed Manchus introduced the Qing style short range bow to Han people when the exact same style of bow was present among Han before the Qing for 2,000 years.
https://historum.com/t/evolution-of-chinese-bows-and-the-myth-of-the-manchu-bow.124269/ another primary source saying Han people in the Ming had the same style of bow as Manchus already, only the string was different with Han using silk and Manchus using beef tendon.
https://historum.com/t/17th-century-military-bow-from-china.193936/#post-3685772 Peter Dekker is not a historian (
u/PeterDekker). He's an amateur arms collector but he's become famous in archery circles for pushing his own website full of bad history.
http://www.manchuarchery.org/did-qing-ban-archery-mongolia In the seventeenth-century the Manchus set out to overthrow the Ming in order to establish their own Qing dynasty. Mongolia was far from a unified country when the Qing came to power, and consisted of many tribes that fought each other. During their rise, Manchu leaders forged alliances with various Mongolian tribes such as the Khalkha and the Chahars who were to be incorporated in the army of the Qing dynasty. The Manchu and Mongolian troops allied under the Qing fought alongside each other to conquer the Ming. They also fought any Mongolian tribes that still opposed the Qing. When the Dzunghars attacked the Khalkhas the Kangxi emperor granted many fleeing Khalkhas asylum under the Qing and set out to a series of punitive expeditions against the Dzunghars that ultimately lead to the extermination of the Dzunghars by Kangxi's grandson, the Qianlong emperor.
This entire paragraph is full of lies.
Majority of Khalkha Outer Mongolians didn't join the Qing dynasty until 1691, DECADES after the Qing-Ming war, because Dzungars threatened to invade Outer Mongolia. They didn't want to join the Qing but were forced to under threat of the Dzungars. So how could the majority of Khalkhas be engaged in the war against the Ming?
The Chahar Inner Mongolians didn't voluntarily join the Qing, the Chahars under Ligdan Khan were allied with the Ming dynasty until the Qing conquered the Chahars with violent force in 1635, defeating Ligdan Khan and his son Ejei Khan. Ligdan Khan's second son Abunai and his grandsons Borni and Lubuzung led Chahars in revolting against the Qing in 1675 but their revolt was crushed and they were executed, ending the senior line of Northern Yuan. They were violently conquered by the Qing and tried to rebel and leave Qing rule. The Khalkha Outer Mongol prince Chingünjav tried rebelling against the Qing in 1755 and he was executed in 1757.
In the 1911 revolution against the Qing, Outer Mongols took the chance to seceded from Qing rule and massacre Manchu bannermen, only the Eight Banner Mongols were loyal to the Qing.
The Mongols that the Qing forged alliances were with the Khorchin, not with the Chahars and Khalkhda who were either brought in by violent conquest or intimidation from the Dzungars.
The Mongolians that joined the Qing enjoyed the same privileges as the Manchu ruling elite such as monthly pay in silver, rice stipends, and exemption from torture when caught for a crime. Also like the Manchus, they could not take on any other profession than warrior or government official. They were literally "the emperor's men", who was seen as a Khan by his Mongolian subjects. Mongolian tribes that joined during the early stages were enlisted under the Manchu banners, and those that joined after the initial conquest were divided under separate Mongolian banners, but all with the same privileges as the Manchu banners. A lot of intermarriage further strengthened the relationships of the Manchu - Mongol warrior class of the Qing. Right after the fall of the Qing, all bannermen, whether Manchu, Mongolian or Chinese, were considered "Manchu" by the new government. Their ties were that close.
Again this paragraph is full of inaccuracies and lies. The Mongols who defected voluntarily to the Qing before 1620 were mostly Khorchin who were placed in the Mongol Eight Banners, NOT in the Manchu banners, and the rest of the Mongols who were conquered or forced to submit to the Qing in 1635 and 1691 were NOT placed in the Eight Banner system at all, but in an entirely separate territorial administrative system (which used the name banner but had nothing to do with the Eight banners) and didn't get any privileges like stipends or exemptions from torture.
These Mongols were in fact subjected to an apartheid system by Manchus. There were also Han bannermen who were later moved into Manchu banners for various reasons.
ONLY Eight Banner Mongols were exempted from torture. The majority of Mongols under Qing rule were ordinary Mongols in the administrative unit leagues and territorial banners (which are NOT the Eight Banners) were subjected to an apartheid system by Manchu karun cooha (border guards). They were NOT exempt from torture, they were NOT given stipends and they were forbidden from leaving their own leagues and banners and from crossing the Great Wall or else they would be severely punished by Manchu guards and even enslaved. Ordinary Mongols needed to apply for special internet passports from the Qing government to league their leagues or banners to go on pilgrimage to Buddhist sties like Wutaishan or Tibet.
The Eight Banner system had Manchu Eight Banners, Mongol Eight Banners, and Han Eight Banners. They lived in walled off garrisons throughout the Qing empire. All of them received free stipends (including Han Eight Bannermen), while Manchu and Mongol Eight Banners were exempted from beatings during interrogations etc. which is meant by exemption from torture (but certainly not exempt from death penalty if the case called for it).
Outside of the Eight Banner system were ordinary Mongol civilians of the leagues and territorial banners (majority of Mongols) and Han civilians, and Tibetans and Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities. Ordinary Mongol civilians never received free stipends, they could be tortured and beaten in interrogations and for punishment unlike Eight Banner Mongols.
The Eight Banner Mongols were the first to voluntarily submit to Nurhaci under Later Jin which became the Qing which is why their received privileges.
However, the rest of the Mongols were violently conquered or came under Qing rule by coercion. The Qing dynasty violently conquered Chahar Inner Mongolians under Ligdan Khan, and Khalkha Outer Mongols only submitted to the Qing dynasty under threat from the Dzungars. The Qing dynasty committed genocide against Oirat Mongols Dzungars by violently ethnic cleansing Dzungaria.
Eight Banner Mongols placed Qing needs over the needs of the non-Eight Banner Mongols in Outer and Inner Mongolia. Eight Banner Mongol officials sent by the Qing to reform Inner and Outer Mongolia in the early 1900s during the attempted modernisation and new policies by the Qing acted against local Mongol interests and helped settle more non-Mongols on their land. Their loyalty was to the Qing emperor, not to Mongolhood.
Furthermore, many Han assimilated into Mongols by intermarrying with Mongol women, like the originally Han Wang family among the Khorchin which joined the Qing and were classified as Mongols by the Qing as they helped the Qing conquer Inner Mongolia and fight against Li Zicheng and the southern Ming dynasty.
The Qing dynasty nominally banned both Mongol civilians and Han civilians from crossing the Great Wall into each other's lands and banned both from crossing the willow palisade into Jilin and Heilongjiang and areas near the Mongol border, however the policy was more harshly enforced against Mongol civilians, Han civilians who got caught mushroom poaching were mostly just beaten and sent back while Han merchants and peasants got away entirely and managed to settle in Inner and Outer Mongolia (marrying Mongol women and becoming the "Mongol followers").
Professor Uradyn E Bulag on the apartheid system Manchus imposed on non-Banner Mongol civilians.
https://books.openedition.org/obp/1527?lang=en an article about assimilation of Han immigrants into Mongol ethnicity (non-Eight banner Mongols) through marriage to Mongol civilian women. It mentions the Han Chinese Wang family who assimilated into Khorchin Mongols and helped the Qing conquer other Mongols.
https://search.proquest.com/openview/5c6d78516e80433b02e24bbac4409096/1.pdf?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=18750&diss=y Borjigin Burensain, an ethnic Mongol also wrote about Mongols assimilating ethnic Han into Mongol ethnicity through marriage to Mongol women including the Wang family among the Khorchin who helped the Qing conquer the rest of Mongolia and fight the Ming.
https://www.jstor.org/stable/23615320 The "Mongol Eight Banners" were entirely different from the territorial banners of Inner Mongolia which had their own names (not named after colours unlike the Eight banners) and even different from the Chahar Eight Banners.
https://epdf.tips/constructing-suiyuan-the-politics-of-northwestern-territory-and-development-in-e.html 30
Buddhist church, and most importantly, a system of banners quite different in conception to the Eight Banner system.58 For those Mongols not reorganised within the Eight Banner system, the Qing emphasised lineal descent from the Yuan royal house as the primary defining feature of Mongol collective identity.
168
Manchu and Mongol Bannermen, the ability to participate in the imperial civil service examinations was one of the privileges of Bannerman life that distinguished them from local Han and non-eight banner Mongols for much of the Qing. 61
Han bannermen like Shou Shan were above non-banner civilian Mongols, Shou Shan had a civilian Mongol wife.
https://ebin.pub/harbin-a-cross-cultural-biography-1487506287-9781487506285.html to induce death. He then ordered his son to shoot him; a subordinate carried out this command.66 By the time the Russians entered the city, the coffin with Shou Shan’s body was being carried south from Qiqihar on its way to Inner Mongolia, the homeland of his Mongol wife.
And the main point of the Mongol legend about the Qing is not about them banning archery altogether, but about the Qing replacing Mongol bows with Manchu bows (which were meant for forest war and hunting and inferior for long range steppe shooting) which did happen. Most Mongols had to use Manchu bows after the Qing conquered the Mongols.
The Qing dynasty won most of its wars with the help of Han banner artillery, which blasted away Li Zicheng's fortresses at Tongguan and blasted southern Ming forts and walls, and Han banner artillery were crucial at the battle of Jao Modo against the Dzungars in the steppe (who themselves mostly deployed muskets and artillery, not bows and arrows). The Dzungars carved out their own empire in Xinjiang and Tibet with muskets and cannon and the Qing countered them with cannon. The Manchu Kangxi emperor was elated after the Han banner artillery destroyed the Dzungars at Jao Modo so he gave one of his own daughters in marriage to the Sun Chengyun, son of Han banner general Sun Sike and Miss Ji (a daughter of Manchu Princess Aohan Gulun/Gurun, daughter of Hongtaiji).
The only effective single use of Manchu archery without other weapons was in Liaodong and Jilin when Nurhaci mounted his defensive warfare at the battle of Sarhu in the forests. The Qing dynasty only won the rest through massive civil wars between the Ming and Mongol infighting with the heavy usage of Han artillerymen and most Qing armies outnumbered Ming ones after Liaodong. The Qing forces were also the same numerically or even outnumbered Ming armies massively in battles after Sarhu.
Nurhaci also handed out his own granddaughter to Ming officers in Liaodong like Li Yongfang who would defect and Hong Taiji would offer the same to later defectors and mutineers who brought over heavy cannon artillery like Shang Kexi in the 1630s.
The Ming collapsed from the combined rebellions of An Bangyan and She Chongming (She-An Rebellion) combined with Li Zicheng's Shun dynasty rebellion and Zhang Xianzhong's Da Xi dynasty rebels which splintered the southern Ming into dozens of warlord factions which began fighting each other in Jiangnan and major warlords began defecting to the Qing.
Qin Liangyu's southwestern Tusi ethnic minority auxiliaries loyal to the southern Ming massacred Manchu archers but they themselves were slaughtered by Han banner artillery who turned their cannon on them. Same with the Tusi troops defending Jiangnan, local Han soldiers defected and massacred them.
The entire naval warfare against Koxinga's family Ming loyalists in the seas were led by Han bannermen like Shi Lang. Shi Lang and his naval experts only defected to the Qing after Koxinga killed Shi Lang's relatives and imprisoned him for disobeying orders. The Qing themselves regarded Manchu bannermen inferior to Russian Cossacks and were forced to call Han bannermen (Koxinga's former ratttan shield troops who surrendered to Shi Lang) to defeat the Russian Cossacks at Albazin. Manchu Bannermen were unable to dislodge the Cossacks and unable to conduct any naval warfare at all while Qing reports said the Han rattan shield bannermen destroyed the Cossacks. Cossacks like Khabarov were devastating Daurs and Evenkis and massacring and raping entire villages of Daur and Tungusic people in the Amur region.
And lastly, the Ming dynasty themselves conquered Manchuria at the height of their power under the Yongle emperor, the Jurchen eunuch Yishiha led a Ming expedition all the way to what is now in Russia and erected the Yongning temple stele in Chinese, Manchu and Mongol. The Aisin Gioro royal family of the Qing were originally under the Ming and appointed by the Ming as headmen of the Jianzhou Jurchens starting with Mentemu (Mongke Temur), 200 years before the Qing dynasty.
https://www.manchuarchery.org/manchus "Their faces are comely, and commonly broad as those of Chinese people; their colour is white, but their nose is not so flat nor their eyes so little as the Chinese have. They speak little, and ride pensively. In the rest of their manners they resemble our Tartars of Europe, though they may be nothing so barbarous. They rejoice to see strangers; they are in no way like the grimness and sourness of the Chinese gravity, and therefore in their first abords they appear more human."
This is how Jesuit missionary father Martino Martini, described the Manchus after he first encountered them during their wars against the Chinese Ming dynasty in the early 17th century. Apparently, father Martino Martini could relate more to these free-spirited warrior people than he could to the strictly confucianist and isolated "Middle Kingdom" mindset of the Chinese literati he had been dealing with.
First of all nearly all of the Qing officers dealing with Jesuits and the Dutch East India company were Han bannermen.
It was also common for multiple westerners to describe various East Asians like Koreans or Ryukyuans as resembling Europeans or "white people" in countenance. Anyone who saw a Korean or Ryukyuan knows they look nothing like white people.
https://twitter.com/bbnotbby/status/1648207389600935938 The Suma oriental of Tomé Pires also refers to Okinawan Ryukuans as "white men, well dressed".
And we can also see how much respect western Europeans had for Manchus in 1900, when western European troops participated in mass atrocities including months of rape and torture against the Manchu majority population in Beijing's "Tartar city" during the Boxer rebellion.
Western soldiers raped Manchu girls like the daughters of Yulu and raped the daughters of Eight Banner Mongols like Chongqi, they murdered and executed Manchus in public like Lao She's father, Enhai, Yuxian, and Manchu Zaixun, Prince Zhuang was forced to hang himself.
These are actual portraits of Manchu emperor Nurhaci commissioned by his son, Emperor Hongtaiji, which show him with slit, slanted narrow eyes.

The main point of the Mongol legend about Manchus banner Mongol bows is NOT about the Manchus banning Mongols from practicing archery altogether, but about Manchus banning Mongol bows specifically and replacing them with Manchu ones, which IS what happened. Modern Mongols in Outer Mongolia and Inner Mongolia use Manchu bows today and not Mongol ones because of the Qing.
Peter Dekker debunked only his own straw man about the Qing banning Mongols from archery, when the real point is about Qing replacing Mongol bows with Manchu bows and making them extinct.
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.mfa.gov.mn/?p=29269&lang=en http://digitalcollections.sit.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1064&context=isp_collection Manchu soldiers entered gers and broke any bows that they found. After more than 200 years of enforcement, these changes stuck and the ancient art of bow making was nearly lost, along with a majority of archery games and traditions. Modern Mongolian bows, consequently, are derived from the Chinese/Manchu tradition; they are larger and have string bridges.
Also this.
https://www.manchuarchery.org/interview-last-manchu-archer By Peter Dekker, January 23, 2015
Ku Ku: At the time it was dangerous to be a Manchu and I was among the first people who were sent to Mao’s working camps. It was tough. As soon as I saw an opportunity, I fled to Singapore. That was about 30 years ago.
30 years before 2015 1985, long after Mao Zedong died and all his policies ended.
It was far more dangerous to be a Manchu in Beijing in 1900 where tons of western European troops were bayoneting and raping Manchu banner people, the so called "free-spirited" warrior people that Europeans were supposed to relate to.
Han Chinese merchants and pirates inflicted massive defeats on the Dutch East India Company (Liaoluo bay in 1633, Fort Zeelandia in 1662, and a massive rebellion in Java in 1741 by both Chinese and Javanese that almost ended Dutch rule except Madurese collaborators intervened on the Dutch side). Chinese were also known for gunrunning and helping supply weapons to people fighting the Dutch. While Manchus opposed offensives against Dutch East India company (it didn't save Manchus from suffering massive atrocities at the hands of other western Europeans in the Boxer rebellion and it didn't save Manchu bannermen and their families in the first opium war). I don't know why Dekker is invested in spewing false history but these wars with the Dutch East India company could have something to do with it.
According to the Dutch East India company themselves, Han Chinese archers under Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) wiped out an entire force of Dutch musketmen led by Captain Thomas Pedel and their arrows blotted out the sun in open battle in Taiwan in 1661 (after the capture of Fort Provintia and before the siege of Fort Zeelandia).
The latter courageously marched in rows of twelve men towards the enemy, and when they came near enough, they charged by firing three volleys uniformly. The enemy, not less brave, discharged so great a storm of arrows that they seemed to darken the sky. From both sides some few fell hors de combat, but still the Chinese were not going to run away, as was imagined. The Dutch troops now noticed the separated Chinese squadron which came to surprise them from the rear; and seeing that those in front stubbornly held their ground, it now became a case of sero sapiunt Phryges. They now discovered that they had been too confident of the weakness of the enemy, and had not anticipated such resistance. If they were courageous before the battle (seeking to emulate the actions of Gideon), fear now took the place of their courage, and many of them threw down their rifles without even discharging them at the enemy. Indeed, they took to their heels, with shameful haste, leaving their brave comrades and valiant Captain in the lurch. Pedel, judging that it would be the veriest folly to withstand such overwhelming numbers, wished to close together and retreat in good order, but his soldiers would not listen to him. Fear had the upper-hand, and life was dear to them; each therefore sought to save himself. The Chinese saw the disorder and attacked still more vigorously, cutting down all before them. They gave no quarter, but went on until the Captain with one hundred and eighteen of his army were slain on the field of battle, as a penalty for making light of the enemy. Other misfortunes befell this unhappy company. A large number of the rifles in possession of our troops were left behind. This battle was fought on a sandy plain, from which escape was impossible, and but for the proximity of the pilot-boat, which lay close to the shore, not one would have been left to tell the tale. The fugitives, who had to wade up to their throats in water, were conveyed to Tayouan.
Dekker himself is aware of the European and American sacking and atrocities against Manchus in Beijing in 1900 and of Han archers defeating Dutch forces in Taiwan in 1661, he mentioned some of them on his other website Mandarin Mansion but on the Manchu archery website he pushes blatant lies.
Dekker owns two websites, Mandarin Mansion and Manchu archery.
on Mandarin Mansion he is well aware of western troops committed mass atrocities against Manchus and wrote about the sacking of Beijing in 1900 on a sale about a Manchu sabre
https://www.mandarinmansion.com/item/saber-manchu-wu-songlu on Mandarin Mansion he is also aware that Han rattan shield soldiers decimated Dutch forces in Taiwan in 1661 (which also involved Han archers wiping out an entire force of Dutch musketeers in the field).
https://www.mandarinmansion.com/glossary/tengpai-tengpai https://www.mandarinmansion.com/item/chinese-tengpai on Manchu archery he pretends Manchus are honorary white Aryans and tries to deride Han archery (who wiped out Dutch musketeers) and pretends the Qing supported all Mongols with stipends and gave them privileges over Han (Mongols who didn't belong to the Eight Banners (the majority of all Mongols) were LESS privileged than Han civilians who weren't part of the Eight Banners. Only Eight Banner Mongols had priveleges).
Also another myth, the claim that the communists eradicated archery from Chinese culture- archery was already mass replaced by musketry among Han peasants in the middle of the Qing dynasty, the only two archery shops open were in Beijing and Chengdu supplying Eight Banner garrisons for their ceremonial weapons and military exams, with the majority of Han peasants already having totally abandoned archery. The majority of ethnic minorities in China like the ethnic Miao followed Han in totally abandoning archery for musketry by the 19th century, today ethnic minority Miao in Guizhou are only known for making their muskets and don't know how to make their traditional bows at all.
In Taiwan, every Han village was armed with matchlock muskets but not a single bowyer was found in the late 19th century, and Taiwan was never ruled by communists.
The mass replacement of archery by muskets was already happening to Mongols and the Solon of northeastern China, the Qing Qianlong emperor had to force Solon people to use archery instead of muskets in the 18th century.
That's why archery was defunct among the majority of Han people and ethnic minorities in mainland China and Taiwan in the 1910s except for the two shops in Beijing and Chengdu. Only Taiwan Aboriginals maintained archery alongside muskets while mainland ethnic minorities like Miao dumped their bows for muskets only.
The same thing with Chinese metalworking. Traditional Chinese blacksmithing was largely gutted by cheap western imported steel in the late 19th century and early 20th century when the communist party didn't even exist yet.
During the Great Leap forward, one of the reasons for the poor quality backyard steel was because the majority of Chinese villages had no experience producing steel at the village level for decades due to a flood of cheap western steel long before communist rule, only a few impoverished isolated areas in inland China retained the knowledge and actually made good quality steel during the great leap forward.
https://www.jstor.org/stable/43290488 http://donwagner.dk/Fate/Fate.html The only thing communists did was briefly made the Beijing archery shop shut down but then it was reopened (by the same bowyer who was alive before 1949 so its still a continuous living tradition).
Both Han and Manchus used the same style of short range bow before the Qing, it's just that Han also had other bows as well alongside it, but the Qing popularised the short range design only. Han bowyers and Manchu bowyers then made the same style of bows during the Qing with other bow styles dying out. The Juyuanhao archery shop in Beijing is still the heritage archery of both Manchus and Han people and not only Manchus.
Besides Peter Dekker, his associate Stephen Selby who fashions himself as a historian of archery is also spreading blatant lies (which he gives no citations for) and passing them off as fact. Selby outrageously claimed in the book "Chinese Archery Studies: Theoretic and Historic Approaches to a Martial Discipline" that the Yuan dynasty debarred and banned all Han Chinese from owning weapons and from entering the military and that they killed or deported all Han bowyers.
The Yuan dynasty literally had two entire army groups which recruited Han Chinese, the Han army of northern China and the Newly Submitted army which recruited from southern China. The Mongol empire and Yuan sent Han officers and soldiers to fight across Eurasia with officers like Guo Baoyu and Guo Kan seeing service in Central Asia and the Middle East and Qi Gongzhi fighting against Qaidu for Kublai in Xinjiang, leading Han soldiers. Kublai Khan handed out Korean to to Han Chinese southern Song soldiers who would defect to the Yuan armies and get recruited as the "Newly Submitted Army".
https://dokumen.pub/empires-twilight-northeast-asia-under-the-mongols-1nbsped-0674036085-9780674036086.html https://vdoc.pub/documents/empires-twilight-northeast-asia-under-the-mongols-2i7l4ccfsq10 Koryŏ women were inseparable from the popularity of things Korean. The first waves of Koryŏ women into the Mongol empire arrived as captives seized during the bloody fighting of the mid-thirteenth century. These women were variously used as slaves, married to recently surrendered Southern Song soldiers, or distributed as war booty to Mongol warriors. Late in the thirteenth century, Qubilai and other Mongol aristocrats began to demand women from elite Koryŏ families as wives and consorts.
Kublai Khan opened up entire Han military colonies (tuntian) in Xinjiang during his war with Qaidu and in the Amur river region before his war with Nayan.
Selby also falsely refers to the Semu Tammachi army as "mercenaries". They were not mercenaries. They were conscripted into the Mongol empire's army because they were subjects and brought to East Asia from Central Asia just as the Mongols sent Han soldiers to Central Asia and the Middle East.
The Yuan dynasty never banned Han Chinese from military service, and never banned Han from owning weapons or killed or deported all Han bowyers. The only place where these kinds of things are written in are urban legends on internet forums by trolls. Selby gave no citation for his claim. It's literally impossible for a medieval dynasty to ban tens of millions of people from owning weapons, one person may have suggested it but it was never implemented since it would lead to mass revolt since large parts of the Yuan army were Han.

2023.05.27 03:45 leopardprintcactus The cause and origins of anti-Welsh prejudice in early England and how this manifested in society.
I found some really interesting and informative articles written by historians about the cause of anti- Welsh prejudice in early Saxon England. If you don't want to read the whole post, there's a TLDR and a quote summary.
I've quoted from the various articles and essays and linked the full articles at the end.
(As you are probably aware 'Welsh' is the name given by the Saxons to native Britons. The terms 'native Briton' and 'Britons' and 'Welsh' are used interchangeably in the articles, but mean the same thing. The Norman invasion worsened prejudice against the Welsh living in Wales, but their prejudice against the Welsh was rooted in a different motivation.)
This refers to the era from when the Saxons first came to Britain and Britons/ Welsh lived in English society up until the 10th century, after which 'Welsh' people were no longer recognised as a separate group in England.
TLDR: - Anti- Briton/ Welsh prejudice in this era was caused by a belief system that justified the Saxons colonising and replacing the Briton/ Welsh population during the 5th century. It included religious elements such as believing the Britons were 'fallen people underserving of their land' and the Anglo- Saxons where 'chosen people' sent as a divine retribution to punish the Britons and to take their land. Essentially the 'Welsh' were demonised and 'othered' in order to justify treating them badly and taking their land, and to elevate the Saxons- '
the British (Welsh) needed to be very evil, perpetrators of terrible sins and devoid of moral scruple, for the English treatment of them to be unproblematic' 1
- Briton language and culture was quickly replaced by Saxon language and culture in England.
- Surviving Briton people in England were slaves and were assimilated.
- Laws which valued Saxon/ English life more than a 'Welshman'.
- Negative stereotypes were rife in Anglo Saxon writing, Britons/ Welsh people frequently portrayed as 'dark' in contrast to the Saxons.
- Brittonic/ Welsh language portrayed as 'demonic,' 'gibberish'.
- 'Welsh' went from meaning 'Romanised foreigner' to 'slave' and other uses such as 'inferior' (i.e 'Weala win' meaning inferior wine), 'strange', 'impudent', 'shameless'
- Anglo-Saxonism (a racial superiority belief system that began in the 19th century) was used by some as a way to justify colonising other countries and the treatment of Native American people.
Summary of the attitudes of the Saxons/ English towards the native Britons/ Welsh. This is taken from an essay written by English historian Dr Debby Banham. In Anglo-Saxon society, the killing of Britons was less harshly punished than killing Anglo-Saxons, the British had to live under English law, and British ethnic identity was identified with unfree social status, in a world where social inferiors were believed to be literally lower or worse people than their superiors. To summarise Anglo-Saxon attitudes to the British as represented by the documentary and linguistic evidence, it seems that Anglo-Saxon writers could make almost any derogatory generalisation about the Britons, represent them as objects rather than social agents, blame them for their own defeat, and depict their territory as up for grabs. Can Anglo-Saxon attitudes be described as racist?1
They believed that one race, their own, was superior to another, the British. They were antagonistic, and their antagonism resulted in, or served to justify, the subordination of the British and their eventual absorption. I have no hesitation in identifying these attitudes as racist.1
I see a continuity in English racism from the Anglo-Saxon landings, through the establishment of English hegemony, up to the present day. Belief in their own superiority has always served the English well in their expansionist aims. They did not need the Empire to make them racist. They could manage it quite well when they had only the British to practise on.1
Anglo- Saxon attitudes: The origins of English racism
Brief history Briton tribes lived all over the British isle.
Before and during the Roman occupation, Britain was raided and invaded by several groups including the Irish and the Scots (the Scoti were a tribe from Ireland who colonised the north and created Scotland later on). It's even mentioned in the
Declaration of Arbroath that the Scots had 'thrown out the
Britons and completely destroyed the Picts '(Picts were a tribe living in north Britain).
After the Romans left Britain the island was left undefended and Scots invasions continued to get worse. The Romans had banned weapons so the Britons were not used to warfare.
The Saxons ended up in Britain, there are a few theories of how - one theory is that the Britons hired Saxon mercenaries (which was quite a common thing to do back then) to fight off the Scots invaders, but the Saxon mercenaries turned against the Britons and began raiding the island and encouraged others from the mainland to come to Britain.
Over time, Saxons, Angles (Angleland= England) and Jutes arrived in Britain and warred with the Britons with the intention of taking their land. And the Scots took land too- this is why there are so many Welsh sounding names in Scotland, Yr Hen Ogledd became part of Strathclyde
The Britons/ Welsh gradually lost more and more land and England was established, the land we now call 'Wales' is all they could keep hold of.
There has been a long debate about the fate of the native Britons, and
this archeology article discusses the
2022 DNA study and what it likely means in terms of 'population replacement' of the native Britons. And would go to explain why Brittonic language and culture was replaced so quickly by Saxon culture. And why the Britons/ Welsh disappeared in England.
The Anglo Saxon Chronicle details the many of the wars between the Saxons and native Britons from the 5th century. And this a more
comprehensive list. It details the actions and attitudes of the Saxons towards the Britons- wars, 'taking towns and wealth', describing the Britons as 'worthless'.
Attitudes of the Saxon settlers towards the native Britons. Gildas was a Romanised Briton monk who lived AD 450/500 – 570 and lived in Ystrad Clud, or where we now call Strathclyde.
He wrote about the events leading up to the Saxons coming to Britain. Bede (AD 672/3 – 735) was an English monk and author and lived in where we would now call Tyne and Wear. He is seen as the 'Father of English history'.
He wrote extensively about the Saxons arrival in Britain
in the Ecclesiastical History of the English People. He also wrote a lot about the Briton people.
He is credited as creating a common identity for the English nation. He believed that the Saxons were justified in colonising Britain and replacing the native Briton population and saw the Saxons as divine retribution for the 'wickedness' of the Briton people.
When the Anglo-Saxons arrived in what was to become England, they no more entered an empty wilderness than did the first Israelis in Palestine, or the first European settlers in America. 1
It is questionable whether they would have been able to use it as effectively if they had believed that the indigenous British had a right to live on their land.1
For Bede, a believer in a loving and forgiving God, the British needed to be very evil, perpetrators of terrible sins and devoid of moral scruple, for the English treatment of them to be unproblematic, let alone a suitable subject for his glorifying narrative. 1
Bede is as far as we know the originator of this idea: he created a common identity for the Germanic settlers, and provided them with a history to be proud of. He defined his 'people' to a large extent by contrast with other groups in Britain.1
But it is the British, with whom the English had most contact, who most consistently act as a foil for them, by lacking precisely those virtues the English are supposed to possess. Where the English are industrious and brave, they are lazy and cowardly; where the English are God-fearing and obedient to Rome, the British, even when Christian, behave like pagans, and obstinately cling to their doctrinal independence. They are incapable of doing anything for themselves except fall into vice.1
For Bede, the function of the British is to be invaded, by the Romans, the Picts and Scots, and finally the English. 1
It was not only legitimate, but necessary to feel and to propagate hatred for the enemy.1
This is from the Anglo Saxon Chronicle
They (the Saxons) described the worthlessness of the Britons, and the richness of the land.
And
Bede suggests that the status of the English as a chosen people is conditional on the English staying faithful to God. He uses the example of the Britons' fall from grace into heresy to illustrate the penalty of breaking this (unwritten) covenant. Bede situates the chosen people in its very own promised land, an idealised Brittania overflowing with God's gifts. The English initially arrive in Britain as an agent of divine retribution against the Britons, whom Bede represents as a fallen nation and a failed chosen people. The English are represented as the Britons' successors, a 'foreknown' people. Their kings are represented as guardians of a covenant, responsible for protecting the people, not only from military threats but also from apostasy and spiritual decay. 2
Bede's representation of the English as a chosen people is clear from the very beginning of Historia ecclesiastica. Bede begins his history by establishing Brittania as an echo of the promised land of Canaan, and its original inhabitants, the Britons, as unworthy keepers of that land. Following the sixth-century British author Gildas, he represents the Britons as a chosen people gone astray, having fallen into heresy, lethargy and vice. He departs from Gildas by picturing the English not as a mindless barbarian horde, but as the successors to the British. 2
Gildas is often referred to as the British Jeremiah, a prophet crying out against the iniquities of his own people. For Gildas, the Britons failed to maintain their covenantal relationship with their creator, so the blessing of the 'promised land' is threatened with destruction.
Bede takes up Gildas' criticism wholeheartedly. For Bede, the Britons were nothing less than rebels against God:
They cast off Christ's easy yoke and thrust their necks under the burden of drunkenness, hatred, quarrelling, strife, and envy ... [They] could not be awakened from the spiritual death which their sins had brought upon them."
This judgement sets the stage for the arrival of the Saxons as retribution for the Britons' waywardness, "ordained by the will of God so that evil might fall upon those miscreants." 2
Bede saw the English as the new Chosen People. 8
Interestingly, Bede praised the Irish
Bede represents the British as a failed nation; their punishment was to be overthrown and outshone by the invading English, and as Bede elucidates here, they continue (at the time of Historia ecclesiasticals completion) to dwell apart from the true church. The Irish, on the other hand, were chosen as one of the "worthier heralds" who would bring the gospel to the English, and as a result were forgiven for their heterodox ideas about Easter and the tonsure.2
Villainising the Britons for defending themselves against Saxon colonisers Cadwallon, king of Gwynedd is presented as little short of a monster. His resistance to Edwin of Northumbria, who had conquered his people, is represented as rebellion, and is described as 'more savage than a pagan', 'barbarous in temperament and behaviour'. 1
The justification for this is that 'he (Cadwallon) was set upon wiping out the whole English people in Britain'. If this were a true portrayal of Cadwallon's motivation and actions, it would hardly be surprising, but it reads more like a projection onto their victims of the English attitude to the Britons.1
How the native Britons/ Welsh were portrayed in Anglo Saxon literature In Felix' Life of Guthlac,
St Guthlac encounters demonic apparitions, and they are portrayed as 'speaking Brittonic' i.e the Welsh language.
In this society, the assimilating Britons may well have been seen as ‘guests from elsewhere’ (while obviously indigenous) in the Anglo-Saxon households or communities that integrated them as people belonging to a different category – socially and ethnically, but also perhaps racially. Indeed, the Britons are treated as racial others in both Felix’s Vita Guthlaci and Guthlac A. As Jeffrey Jerome Cohen argues, ‘Guthlac’s colonization of the demons’ cherished home’ (the Fenlands, much like the home of the Grendelkin) not only ‘re-enacts in miniature the dispossession of that very territory’ by the Germanic tribes settling there in the fifth century. 3
In a chapter entitled in the Old English translation ‘Hu þa deofla on brytisc spræcon’ (How the devils spoke in Brittonic), the Vita Guthlaci narrates that just as the Welsh are invading Mercia from the west during the reign of King Coenred, in the Fens a crowd of demons ‘impersonates a band of British marauders and sets fire to Guthlac’s dwelling, attacking him with spears’. Guthlac chants a psalm and the demon-Britons vanish ‘velut fumus’ (like smoke), potentially a symbolic parallel to the ‘powerful and attractive group fantasy’ of a Mercian ‘manifest destiny’ entitling it to conquer British lands while their inhabitants simply vanished.3
And
His settlement enacts a fantasy of manifest destiny, displacing the ethnic violence at Mercia's border to an internal space where a triumph can be spectacularly staged over external and internal difference simultaneously. Representing the Britons as banished demons and Guthlac as a man singularly in possession of himself offers a culturally useful fantasy of a male body whose identity is uncomplex, internally imperturbable. Guthlac's stabilitas -- his immobile, granite-like, and unconflicted subjectivity -- embodies everything Anglo-Saxon England in general and eighth century Mercia in particular as potentially corporate identities were not. .4
How the Anglo Saxons racialised the native Britons in literature/ riddles as 'dark' and demonic and animalised The Britons are clearly racialized in the Anglo-Saxon imaginary, belonging to a system of racial categorization in which several categories intersected: bodily distinction (Britons described repeatedly as sweart [dark]), language (Welsh as demonic speech in Guthlac or as incomprehensible gibberish in Ælfric*), and social status (according to the Laws of Ine and the economic consequences thereof, also evident in the very term wealh and its entire lexical field of derogatory connotations). 3
Nina Rulon-Miller brought to light the constellation in which the few Welsh personae to appear in the Exeter Book riddles are placed – it consists of oxen, the concepts of yoking or fettering, dark skin, and the borderland. For instance, in Riddle 72, an ox tended by a ‘sweart hyrde’ (dark herdsman) – compare the ‘sweart ond saloneb’ (black and dark-faced) servant in Riddle 49 – is ‘bunden under beam’ (bound under yoke) and treads the ‘mearcpaþas Walas’ (the paths on the Welsh march). In Riddle 12, swarthy Welsh men are tightly fettered with ox-leather bonds, and a dark Welsh woman works on an object made of ox-hide. RulonMiller proposes as the most likely solution to Riddle 52 ‘yoke of oxen led by a female slave’, since the riddle subjects are associated with binding as well as with a female Welsh slave or ‘Wale’. The association with oxen is thus quite transparent: both Britons and oxen are perceived in the riddles as servile creatures, physically or socially fettered, even if not all wealhas are slaves. But their description as ‘dark-skinned’, coupled with their association to animality, points to their essential otherness, with the potential of sliding into something that is so different to the ideal audience of the riddles as to be almost inhuman. 3
By the time the Exeter Book riddles were inscribed in their extant forms, when the Welsh kingdoms no longer posed an immediate military threat and the Britons on Anglo-Saxon territories had been integrated as slaves, servants, or brides, this discourse could have developed nto a condescending (rather than outright monsterizing) linkage of the wealhas with animality, bondage, and dark skin. 3
These texts (riddles that depict Britons as 'dark' and with negative traits etc) represent mainstream Anglo-Saxon thought. 1
*(We see attitudes towards the Welsh language as being 'evil' in the Blue Books report- '
It is not easy to over-estimate it's evil effects. It is the language of the Cymri', an anterior to that of the ancient Britons.' and '
It distorts the truth, favours fraud, and abets perjury') Britons/ Welsh discriminated against in Anglo Saxon law In the Laws of Ine of Wessex (AD 694,) in the
Wergild system (monetary compensation for injuring or killing someone), 'Welshmen' were clearly defined as being 'lesser' in law, due to the wergild payment for an Anglo Saxon was 2 to 5 times higher than that of a 'Welshman'.
There are some theories on why this discrimination was made-
The imbalance in wergelds between the two groups may hold within it the very key to the disappearance of the Britons. The wergeld provided the basic honour price for an individual and represented the compensation that would be paid to his kin on his death. Other legal compensations, for injury to self or property, however defined, were computed as a proportion of one’s wergeld. The long term effects of Britons being valued at about half the wergeld of their English counterparts was that, in the normal course of things, large amounts of property would gradually pass from the British community to the English. 5
If, for example, a hypothetical English and British nobleman each owning five hides of land got into a series of disputes with one another and were dealt with fairly by the courts, sometimes giving judgement in favour of the one and sometimes of the other, then all compensations paid by the Briton to the Englishman would be twice the value of those paid to him by his opponent. The end result would be that the property and finally the land would pass to the Englishman. 5
And
The early Anglo-Saxon laws give some indication of the circumstances under which the British lived in Anglo-Saxon society. The law-code of Ine of Wessex, originating in the late seventh century, but preserved as an appendix to the ninth-century Laws of Alfred, gives three levels of wergild (compensation for killing a family member) for free Welshmen, all lower than the wergild of a West Saxon peasant 1
It has also been pointed out that differential scales of wergild were a common method of reinforcing the balance of power between conquered and conquering peoples throughout medieval Europe 1
it would have been an important means of cultural assimilation: successful Britons 'became' English, while remaining British was a sign of failure to prosper.1
And
The inferior social position of the free Wealh is further shown in Ine's Laws, where a man charged with stealing or harbouring stolen cattle had to produce an oath of sixty hides if he were accused by a Wealh, whereas if the accuser were English the oath required was doubled. 9
The usage of 'Welsh' and derogatory associations 'Welsh' originally meant 'Romanised foreigner'. But the meaning changed over time to mean 'slave' and other derogatory association.
Britons were often slaves in Anglo Saxon society to the point that 'Welsh' also meant 'slave'.
The derogatory connotations attached to wealh or the adjective wilisc are plentifully attested, from ‘shameful person’ to ‘bad servant’, while Ælfric equates weala win with crudum uinum (rough, inferior wine) and has a sinner speak wealode mid wordum (‘strangely’, ‘impudently’). These associations survive in present-day British slang words such as ‘to welsh’ (to cheat) and ‘welsher’ (an untrustworthy person). As Ryan Craig and Victoria Davis demonstrate, such discursive practices are not divorced from material realities and are often used to reinforce and sustain material inequity by creating ‘a reality in which it is reasonable for a few to control and to possess the material at the sacrifice of the well-being of others’. 3
And
That it has given us modern English 'Welsh' shows, however, that a parallel ethnic meaning continued in use. This dual meaning must have arisen in an intermediate period, in which 'Briton' and 'slave' were for practical purposes identical. 1
In the tenth century, the writer of the West Saxon gospels used weala to translate the Latin seruus in the parable of the good and evil servants. This seruus was not of British descent, so the Old English word must mean simply 'slave'.1
Between these two stages must have been a period when more or less all Britons were slaves. 1
And
The verbal and adjectival forms derived from wealh reveal further extensions of its meanings and connotations. AEfric uses the verb with the meaning "to be bold, impudent, wanton":
"He cwae bat he nolde and wealode mid wordum "
He said that he would not and was insolent in his speech". Clearly related to this meaning is' walana.' translating Aldhelm's protervorum "shameless people" in the Old English gloss of unknown date contained in a tenth-century manuscript, and wealh "wanton" in 'Ic eom ondetta 6aet ic onfeng on minne mud wealworda' in a tenth-century fragment from a Latin liber poenitentialis. Finally, in the eleventh-century glossary which seems to have been compiled from a number of glossed manuscripts, the Latin barbarus, which has the sense "foreign, uncultivated or ignorant" and in the thirteenth century meant "barbarian", is glossed by walch siue ungerad. Ungerad usually has the sense "rude, unskilled, foolish, ignorant", so again the more negative aspects of wealh are stressed. 9
And
The derogatory connotations of wealh spill over onto its derivative fonns. In his sermon for Ash Wednesday, Aelfric uses the verb wealian to mean "to be impudent, bold, or wanton": he cwatJ pat he no/de and wealode mid wordum, I and sade pat he wolde his wifes brucan I on pam unalyfedum timan 10
Analysing how Anglo Saxon texts contained ideas that normalised the justification for colonising other countries The ideas that enable later colonial expansion are already present in Anglo-Saxon texts, in both the Anglo-Latin original and the Old English translation and adaptations.
Post-colonial criticism attends to power relationships and knowledge imbalances between colonizers and colonized. Post-colonial theory usually focuses on modern empires, on colonies or former colonies, and their subjects, on the notion of the ‘other,’ on who speaks on whose behalf. But it can also help to understand what happened when Angles and Saxons invaded Britain in the years following the Roman withdrawal and supplanted the native Britons in positions of influence and power. The Lives of Guthlac present that overthrow, as well as the subsequent battles between the ‘englisc,’ and the Welsh and Britons who continued to occupy the margins of Britain in Wales in the west as well as in the fens in the east, as legitimate, and in fact as being in no need of any justification.
Attending to the ways in which a text like the Life of Guthlac normalizes and naturalizes conquest and power imbalances illuminates the development of a world-view that enables later colonizing operations to be undertaken as if it were legitimate for the English to subdue the Irish and, later, the inhabitants of North America, China, India, and Africa. 6
There is abundant evidence in early English culture, in this case its literature, to show that the foundations of British racism, colonialism, and imperialism underpin Western approaches to both other humans and the environment. 7
The way in which early Anglo-Saxon authors envisioned history can be viewed as an important ideological model for the later American concept of historical identity. It is only by looking closely at early nationalist movements—through the ecclesiastical and secular, the myths and histories, and the conflation of both—can the level of British, or English, influence on America’s myth of Anglo-Saxonism be properly understood. 8
Hope this is of some interest!
I would suggest reading the articles and essays I have linked to below. They are really interesting.
