2023.05.28 08:57 Sgabonna Measuring Good and Evil - Example Hitler's World War 2. (1st Attempt)

I've given instructions to ChatGPT to assess all the Positive and Negative wills that can derive 'Good' and 'Evil' actions. As well as given a point system in which it can assess Good and Evil.
Here is my first proper assessment of an event. What tweaks would you want?
Let's start with the Evil assessment:
  1. Magnitude of harm based on action (0-10 points): Hitler's actions resulted in the death of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust, in addition to causing World War II, which resulted in the deaths of an estimated 70-85 million people (approximately 3-4% of the world's population at the time). Thus, the magnitude of harm is clearly at a maximum of -10 points.
  2. Multiplier for the number of individuals affected (1-10): Given the vast number of people affected both directly (through war and genocide) and indirectly (through the widespread devastation of communities and nations), this would also be a maximum of -10.
  3. Duration (0-10 points): Hitler's reign lasted for 12 years (1933-1945), during which his harmful actions were continual. Therefore, this earns -10 points.
  4. Intentionality (0-10 points): Hitler was fully aware and intentional in his harmful actions, thus scoring another -10 points.
  5. Degree of self-interest (0-10 points): Hitler's actions were driven by a warped sense of nationalistic pride and a desire for personal power and dominance, indicating a high degree of self-interest. This results in another -10 points.
  6. Impact on vulnerable populations (0-10 points): His actions targeted multiple vulnerable groups, including Jews, the disabled, and political dissidents, among others. This would result in a maximum score of -10 points.
Weighted harm score = Magnitude of harm (-10) x Multiplier for individuals affected (10) = -100 points Total Evil score = Weighted harm score (-100) + Duration (-10) + Intentionality (-10) + Degree of self-interest (-10) + Impact on vulnerable populations (-10) = -140 points
Now, for the Good assessment from Hitler's perspective:
  1. Magnitude of self-sacrifice (0-10 points): Hitler may have seen himself as making personal sacrifices for what he saw as the "greater good" of his vision for Germany. However, this was deeply intertwined with his desire for personal power. Therefore, he might be given 2 points.
  2. Magnitude of reducing suffering/increasing pleasure (0-10 points): Hitler did initiate policies that led to economic recovery and reduced unemployment in Germany, which in his view could be seen as reducing suffering/increasing pleasure for some. However, these actions were significantly outweighed by the immense suffering he caused. Therefore, he might be given 1 point.
  3. Multiplier for the number of individuals benefiting (0-10 points): The number of individuals that benefited from Hitler's actions would be small compared to those harmed. However, in his mind, he may have seen the German people as beneficiaries. Therefore, he might be given 1 point.
  4. Magnitude of selfless motivation (0-10 points): Hitler’s motivations were primarily based on a destructive ideology, personal power, and dominance rather than selflessness. Therefore, he gets 0 points.
  5. Duration of the behavior (0-10 points): Hitler held power for 12 years. However, considering the detrimental impact of his actions, duration doesn't translate into positive points here. Therefore, he gets 0 points.
  6. Intentionality (0-10 points): Hitler was highly intentional in his actions, but considering his intentions were mostly harmful, he doesn't gain positive points for intentionality. Therefore, he gets 0 points.
Weighted benefit score = 2 (Self-sacrifice) + 1 (Reducing suffering) + 1 (Multiplier) + 0 (Selfless motivation) + 0 (Duration) + 0 (Intentionality) = +4 points
Therefore, Hitler's combined score, based on your suggested calculation method, would be -140 (Evil) + 4 (Good) = -136 points.
Please note that this assessment is based on the scales and values you provided and is intended for illustrative purposes. It does not take into account all the complexities and nuances of historical events or human behavior, nor does it aim to diminish the horrific atrocities committed during Hitler's regime.
Everything that we do to hurt one another comes from a perceived animalistic concept of 'Us' vs 'Them'. It is a curse that begets humanity, just as it does the animal kingdom. We want to feel like we belong, we are born alone, we are self aware, so we group. But groupings creates a sense of 'Us', and to protect 'Us', we can justify doing EVIL things to 'them'. War is just politically sanctioned 'Murder', and 'self defence' which turns into offense, continues the cycle of 'Murder' through revenge.

Competing Wills

Positive Wills (from Hitler's perspective): Negative Wills:
Will to Power (Nietzsche): Hitler sought power over Germany and subsequently Europe. He desired domination and control, an extreme and perverted interpretation of Nietzsche's concept of the Will to Power. Will to Dominate: Hitler wanted to impose his will on others, not for their benefit, but to exert control and power.
Will to Lead: Hitler certainly had a strong will to lead and command, which he demonstrated as the Führer of Nazi Germany. Will to Deceive: Hitler used propaganda to manipulate public opinion and deceive not only his own people but also the international community.
Will to Innovate: Hitler pushed for technological and infrastructural advancements, such as the development of the Autobahn, V2 rockets, and jet aircraft. Will to Destroy: Hitler sought to destroy entire races and cultures in his pursuit of the so-called Aryan supremacy.
Will to Achieve: Hitler had a strong will to achieve his goals, however warped and destructive those goals were. Will to Intimidate: Hitler used fear and intimidation as tools to silence opposition and maintain control.
Will to Assertiveness: Hitler was certainly assertive, often aggressively so, in pushing his policies and ideology. Will to Hate: Hitler harbored and incited extreme hatred towards Jews, Slavs, Romani people, disabled individuals, and other groups.
Will to Order: Hitler had a vision for an orderly society, structured according to his racist and xenophobic ideologies. This pursuit of order, however, was achieved through violent and oppressive means. Will to Exploit: Hitler exploited not only the people he persecuted but also the German people and their nationalistic sentiments.
Will to Protect: Hitler often justified his actions as necessary to protect the Aryan race and German society from what he perceived as external threats (other races, cultures, political ideologies, etc.), even though this "protection" resulted in unimaginable harm and destruction. Will to Kill: This is the most grave and severe will, which led to the genocide of six million Jews during the Holocaust, along with countless others who perished during World War II.
Will to Loyalty: He exhibited a perverse form of loyalty towards his vision of the German people and the Aryan race. This sense of loyalty was skewed towards those who adhered to his ideologies and were of perceived racial purity. Will to Reject: Hitler rejected the notion of equality among races and cultures, leading to his pursuit of an Aryan "master race."
Will to Unity: Hitler aimed to unite the German people under a single ideology, a warped form of nationalism. Unfortunately, this unity was achieved through manipulation, propaganda, and force. Will to Isolate: Hitler implemented policies that isolated targeted groups, particularly Jews, from the rest of society, as seen in the establishment of ghettos and concentration camps.
Will to Prosperity: Hitler sought economic prosperity for Germany, which was still recovering from the Treaty of Versailles. However, this prosperity was pursued at the expense of marginalized and oppressed groups. Will to Subjugate: Hitler aimed to subjugate other nations under German rule, reflecting his ambition for imperial conquest.
Will to Tradition: Hitler emphasized the importance of tradition and heritage, but he did so in a way that selectively glorified certain aspects of German history while demonizing others based on his prejudices. Will to Defile: Hitler not only physically defiled groups he saw as inferior, but also morally and spiritually defiled them in his speeches and propaganda.
Will to Neglect: Hitler showed an extreme lack of compassion or empathy towards the people he harmed, reflecting a severe form of neglect.
Will to Disregard: Hitler disregarded the rights, dignity, and value of the lives of those he deemed inferior or undeserving.
Will to Oppress: Hitler exerted control through oppressive measures, denying basic human rights and freedoms to those under his rule.
Will to Conformity: Hitler forced his ideologies onto the German people, expecting conformity and submission to his vision for the nation and the Aryan race.
Will to Envy: Hitler's policies and actions might reflect an underlying envy towards the groups he targeted, perhaps seeing their cultural, intellectual, or economic successes as threats to his vision of German superiority.
Will to Arrogance: Hitler's actions and speeches often conveyed an inflated sense of self-importance and an unwarranted feeling of superiority over others, hallmarks of arrogance.
Will to Ignorance: Hitler embraced and propagated ignorance, denying factual information that contradicted his ideologies, as seen in the distortion of scientific, historical, and cultural facts in Nazi propaganda.

2023.05.28 08:53 Immortalsirnz [Battle] The War of Malbork Aggression, 1517

Resolution of 1516
January-April 1517, North Muscovy
The winter of 1517 was a particularly brutal winter, even by Russian standards. Both the Swedish and Livonian armies were forced to hunker down as the snows swirled around them. With both King Sten Svantesson and Wolter Von Plettenberg seeking to replenish their losses, they would have to wait until snow yielded to rain in the spring Rasputitsa. It was during this wet time that both of the reinforcement armies arrived. In this time of limited operational mobility, both armies moved to secure more of the Novgorod area. The Polish army, on the other hand, had withdrawn from the area to regroup further south, in a grand ducal army with the Lithuanians. An army from Pskov was also raised by their commanding general. Jan Radziwiłł died soon after he set out from the city, paralyzing his mourning army. By the end of April, both armies finally began their triumphal march out of their winter quarters to continue the crusade against Muscovy.
May 1517, Former Duchy of Rzhev
The two armies set out in two groups heading south east. The Swedish army's goal is the city of Tver, and the Livonian army‘s goal is the city of Rzhev. As has been a common pattern in this war so far, the scouting of the four armies is mostly lackluster. The stars had aligned so that the two Russian armies would attack the Livonian army, whose scouts were underperforming in these wide open spaces. As has also been a pattern in the war so far, the Russians fail to coordinate their attacks. Plettenberg’s army would meet Mozhaisky’s outside of Goroshin.
The First and Second Battles of Goroshin, July 1517
With both armies taking up excellent positions, the battle would begin with a textbook artillery opener from the Livonian forces. This will be followed up by a monstrous hail of arrows from the seemingly endless Muscovites archers, greatly thinning the Livonian infantry. As the terrain here around the Volga is poor for cavalry, the Livonian knights unhappily dismount to fight as heavy infantry. The Muscovites brought plenty of mounted skirmishers, but their effectiveness would be limited by the wet ground. With the knights proper dismounted off their horses, this left only the Livonian squires as the cavalry forces for the Livonians. This would prove to be an excellent move as the lighter armored cavalry men would not be slowed down by the knights’ heavy armor. The Muscovite left flank could not hold a candle to those young squires, eager to prove themselves, and they were the first to leave the field. Despite this initial victory, the Muscovites would not let them have it easy. The large numbers of Muscovites mounted skirmishers would rain javelins upon their enemies, unchallenged by the Livonians. It would, however, be the squires that once again would prove the nail in the Muscovite coffin as the Muscovite right cavalry flank was scattered by their spirited fighting. The horn to signal the retreat was soon sounded by the Muscovites, and the Muscovites made a very organized retreat away from the field, safe, but dispirited.
It is soon after this, that the second Muscovite army commanded by Shuysky, would catch up to the Livonians from behind, as part of a failed pincer movement. It is here that the Livonians, for the first time in the war, would have a rather lackluster artillery performance to open the battle. But, to their luck, the Muscovites would prove even worse. This army would prove to be very different from the one that they had just fought, as it appeared much smaller, but better armored. The Muscovites would from now on employ a different tactic against their opponents, and would use their own cavalry to merely keep the enemies off of their infantrys’ flanks, which they do well enough here. As the battle goes on, and as well as the Livonians had been fighting, they were still tired from their previous engagement, and it became clear to von Plettenberg, that he must sound the retreat in order to save his exhausted army from destruction. The Livonian retreat is not particularly well executed, as von Plettenberg is not used to retreating, but on the flipside Shuysky is not used to winning, and his pursuit of the Livonians is ineffective, who manage to get away. The Livonians retreat to Volgo, where they will spend the rest of the season recovering from a grueling gauntlet of a month, and establishing occupations to link themselves up to Lithuanian supply lines.
May-December 1517, Torzhok Area
To their north, the Swedish army under the command of Sten Svantesson attempts to march across a rather desolate area of land. After a light amount of progress, it quickly becomes apparent that their supply lines will not enable them to reach their target [<1], without linking up with the Livonians to their southwest, and the Lithuanian supplies that flow to them. The Swedes will be forced to stop in Yazhelbitsy to figure out their supply situation, and will spend time occupying lands to their north and south. To complicate matters further, the autumn Rasputitsa would be even worse than the spring, enabling a breakout of the plague in the Livonian camp. To the far north the Karelian revolts will continue to gain steam and will occupy most of traditional Karelia.
January-July 1517, Former Grand Duchy of Smolensk
Meanwhile, to the south, the king of Poland is re-organizing his armies to coalesce around the city of Smolensk. Through the winter snows and spring rains, his army gathers ready to strike. Once the rains stop in early May, the army sets out under Grand Hetman Konstanty Ostrogski and Jan Amor Tarnowski. The plan is simple: the Grand Ducal Army, a combination of Polish and Lithuanian might, shall force the Muscovites from their positions at Dorogobuzh. The ancient fortified city of the Rus lies on the Dnieper river. Overlooking the city are two heights, from which the muscovite forces have taken up a commanding view of the river valley. Grand prince Dmitri, for his part, has left a professional army under Chelyadnin and a new army under Mikahil Bulgakov to defend the city. Hearing rumblings of the Grand Ducal Army long in advance. Dmitri would also send the word south to the army at Bryansk to join the fight, in Dorogobuzh. This army would take nearly a month to make it the greater distance north, however. With ample troops to cover the hills surrounding the city, the Poles will spend the better portion of two months failing to take either hill surrounding the city.
In August, Ostrogski will take stock of the situation that he is in and make a decision to begin the Bryansk campaign early. He will send half his army south down to the aforementioned city, in order to reclaim it for the Grand duchy of Lithuania. The hope is that with less of a concentration of force on the Muscovite side, he will be able to take Dorogobuzh slowly. The new force is led by yet another Jerzy Radziwiłł, and reaches Bryansk before the Muscovites do, who are led once again by Shemyachich. The already sacked city has hastily repaired walls and a Muscovite garrison. With this in mind, it should not be a surprise that the city falls quickly after some well-placed barrages from the Polish artillery. It would be noted that the Muscovite garrison was given no quarter by the Polish and Lithuanian conquerors. Shemyachich (and Ivan V of Ryazan) have finally caught up to them however, and Radziwiłł reasons that his cavalry are better suited to the open fields rather than inside city walls.
Battle of Bryansk, September 1517
The battle of Bryansk begins with a bang. Many of them, in fact, as both of the artillery batteries roared to life, and hit true on their enemies. The rest of the battle is a much more boring affair. The infantry nearly fight to a standstill, and the Muscovite cavalry, once again, attempts and succeeds to merely draw off the Polish cavalry from inflicting too much damage on themselves or their infantry center. After several hours of grinding fighting and mounting casualties, Shemyachich sees no path to victory for the Muscovites, and orders the retreat away from the city to hopefully cross the river Desna once again, back to the safety of Muscovy.
After a short rest in Bryansk, the polls and Lithuanians continue their so-called Bryansk campaign and split up once again, confident that the Muscovites will not reengage this year. They are able to take the city of Karachev this year and reclaim the city of Trubetsk in Ruthenia. Their campaign is cut short, once again, by a particularly intense rainy season with general Stanisław Lanckoroński even going down with a minor case of illness for a few weeks due to unsanitary conditions.
August 1517, City of Dorogobuzh
Back at Dorogobuzh, Ostrogski feels confident that he can throw his weight against one of the hills and finally take it. He chooses the south hill, for no particular reason other than he has a good feeling about it. Due to yet again, another Muscovite scouting failure, he is able to assault the hill with numerical superiority. Surprising the Muscovites with a furious attack, he’s able to take the hill rather easily. The Polish at this point do not have a large contingent of siege artillery, but the defenses of the city are not well-maintained, and thus are not difficult to blast open. Ostrogskii hesitates here at the open fortifications of the city, as he knows that most of his strength is concentrated in his cavalry's superiority. He sees fit to at least attempt an assault with the famed landsknecht taking point against the inferior Muscovite infantry forces. If it does not go well, he will simply have to think of another plan. Luckily for him, it does go well, and the famed mercenaries of Germany prove their worth as they force the Muscovites out of the city for good. Chelyadnin and Bulgakov retreat from the city back towards Vyazma. Due to the onset of the rain and the slog of the month’s battles, the Grand Ducal Army is not able to make much headway into Muscovite territory. Vyazma will have to wait until next year if there is one.

More than two million calls to the DWP’s Future Pensions Centre helpline were blocked from entering the call waiting queue between January and May 2023
DWP Minister Laura Trott also confirmed that less than 50,000 calls were answered in each four-week period, despite earlier assurance that extra staff had been deployed to manage increased demand.
Court of Appeal ruled that Secretary of State’s practice of excluding claimants awaiting verification of national insurance number applications from advance payments of universal credit is unlawful
This case related to two claimants who made separate claims for UC, both seeking an advance payment pending approval of their claims. However, neither claimant had a national insurance number (NINo).

More than 100,000 universal credit households were subject to the minimum income floor in February 2023
Total number of households and proportion of all households with a self-employed claimant impacted by MIF have both more than doubled in the 12 months since March 2022.
Minister Guy Opperman confirmed on 24 May that in the most recent month for which data is available (February 2023) 111,000 households with one or more self-employed claimants were subject to the MIF (27 per cent of all households that included self-employed claimants).
Mr Opperman also provided figures for each month since March 2022, together with details of the number of individuals in households affected by the MIF.
Over half a million UC claimants sanctioned in a year for not attending interview
The latest statistics released by the DWP this month show that 541,000 universal credit (UC) claimants were sanctioned in the year to January 2023. The overwhelming majority of these, 530,000, were sanctioned for failing to attend or failing to participate in a mandatory interview.
The figures represent a very small fall from the peak sanction rate, but the number of claimants sanctioned is still more than double what it was pre-pandemic.

2023.05.28 08:33 nekotantei_19 WN Chapter 155

......and well, this is what the Nine-Headed Dragon Archipelago Kingdom ceremony looks like. You can choose between a shiro-muku (traditional kimono) and a shiro-uchikake (traditional wedding kimono), and it's very glamorous. Your groom has a good figure, and I think he would look better in a crested hakama than Ichiha, don't ya think?
......Hmmm. It's better to be simple, not such a strange thing. I see. The bride wants a weddin' dress, right? If so, we recommend this plan. This is the 'Let's get married in a historic temple in the Republic of Turgis' plan. A friend of ours recently had a weddin' with this plan...... .
◇ ◇ ◇
The Temple of Sappuer in the Republic of Turgis. This temple, similar to the Parthenon in Souma's old world, has existed since before the founding of the Republic and was one of the oldest structures in the world. It was in this temple that Kuu performed the inauguration ceremony and the marriage ceremony with Taru and Leporina. Today, a man and woman were about to get married at the Sappuer Temple.
"Velza and Halbert. Congratulations on your marriage"
"Congrats" "Congratulations!"
Receiving congratulations from the country's head of state, Kuu Taisei, and his wives, Taru and Leporina, were Halbert Magna, dressed in a white tuxedo, and Velza, who would become his wife today. Velza is wearing a pure white wedding dress, and the dark elf's brown skin reflects the pure white dress, which further accentuates Velza's beauty. Then Halbert scratched his cheek with a somewhat furtive look on his face.
"O, oh. Thanks, Kuu. I never thought I'd be congratulated by the head of another country"
"Ukkyakkya! Don't worry about it. We've known each other a long time"
Halbert and Kuu. Although they came from different countries and backgrounds, they had many opportunities to fight together, such as defeating a deformed ogre in the Republic and providing reinforcements to the then Union of Eastern Nations when it was attacked by a demon wave, and they recognized each other as comrades-in-arms. It was Kuu who suggested that Halbert and Velza's wedding be held at the Sappuer Temple.
"The Temple of Sappuer is the most famous historic site in our country. We need to take this opportunity to show the rest of the world that there is more to the Republic than leisure skiing, hot springs, and seafood, and to attract tourists"
"That's what this is about. Our marriage is just a bonus then"
"I'd say it's just 50-50. It's for the sake of the country, and I want to celebrate my friend's marriage. It's a win-win situation"
"Hee hee, I'm delighted. I can't believe I'm being blessed in such a beautiful place"
Velza smiled as she said this, and Hal was in a "......well okay" mood. Incidentally, Halbert and Velza's wedding, like Tomoe and Ichiha's, will also be broadcast live in the countries of the former members of the Maritime Alliance. Since it was the wedding of the hero [Hal the Red Oni] who defeated that Fuuga Haan (in reality, he only clipped his wings, so it is much exaggerated), it attracted a lot of attention, especially within the Kingdom of Friedonia, and Kuu used it for publicity sake. Therefore, the cost of this ceremony is shared half by the Kingdom and half by the Republic.
Then, Hal's first wife Kaede and second wife Ruby came to the five of them. They were both in dresses to attend the ceremony.
"You both seem to be......ready to go. You look lovely"
"Oh, Velza. You're such a pretty bride"
"Thank you, Lady Kaede and Lady Ruby!"
The first through third wives gathered together and happily talked with each other, their husband notwithstanding. Both Kaede and Ruby accepted that Velza would be his third wife before the man himself, Halbert did. It also means that Velza worked hard to make that happen.
(I noticed that the moat was filled in, the walls were collapsed, and the gates were left open with a sign that said 'Welcome' on it......)
Halbert thought of this as he looked at the three women. Halbert's feelings for Velza were initially just that of a big brother for his cute little sister. I thought she would adore me because I saved her life, and I never imagined that we would have a relationship that went beyond that.
But Velza, on the other hand, was working to become his wife from the beginning. I heard that before Kaede and Ruby's marriage, she had already asked her directly to be his third wife, and he had fulfilled the condition of 'graduate from one of the academies' that was given to her at that time. She was also studying at the academy to become Halbert's secretary in order to help the Magna family in the future.
She has taken care of Bill, the child of Halbert and Kaede, has shown filial piety to Glaive and Elba, who will eventually become her in-laws, has put in roots in Kaede's family, the Foxia family, and through her father Sur has established a connection between the Magna family and the God Protected Forest. Before conquering Halbert, she had conquered all the people around Halbert.
Before he knew it, Kaede, Ruby, and his parents were pestering him to 'hurry up and marry Velza'. And when he was told of Velza's efforts up to that point, although he was amazed at her persistence, thinking that she adored him so much was both cute and teasing, and he had no choice but to immediately wave the white flag and give in.
As Halbert was thinking this, Lucy, the facilitator, came to call for them.
"Vellie. Halbert. Please get ready"
"O, yeah" "All right, Lucy"
The wedding was attended by members of the Magna and Foxia families, dark elves from the God Protected Forest, and friends from the academy, including Tomoe. Souma also wanted to attend, but as expected, he decided against it because it would be too much for his schedule and security to travel to the Republic for one of his vassals, even if he is a friend. Well, it is being broadcast live, so it is being watched by many people.
Then Kuu snickered and gave Halbert the thumbs up.
"Ukkyakkya! Look forward to seeing you after the ceremony is over. In addition to the inn we have prepared for the attendees, we have reserved a small hot spring inn exclusively for Halbert and Velza. I hope you enjoy your first night as newlyweds to the fullest"
"Hey, why the heck are you mentioning that at this point!?"
Halbert huffed and turned to Kaede and Ruby, both of whom were looking at him with pasted-on smiles.
"......Well, it's tactless of me to meddle with tonight. I have no choice"
"You should teach her properly. Lady-killer?"
The aura that was brewing behind the two smiling women made Halbert break out in a nasty sweat. Velza, on the other hand, was.......
"I know I have my shortcomings, but I'm looking forward to working with you"
He imagined (fantasized?) a lot of things at this moment. She looked at Halbert expectantly with her hand on her cheek. Halbert looked up to the heavens, unable to say anything.
The wedding itself was solemnized without incident, and with the blessings of many people, including Tomoe, Ichiha, Yuriga, and Lucy, Velza became Halbert's wife, which was a long-cherished dream for her. And after the end of the ceremony.
"I wanted Lucy to receive this"
"Eh, to me?"
Velza presented Lucy with the bouquet she had prepared.
"What I received from Tomoe-san and the others, I now give to you. May happiness come to you"
"Ah, ahaha......thanks"
Lucy accepted the flowers with an embarrassed smile.
◇ ◇ ◇
---And time goes back to the present.
"......and well, this is what it looks like in the Republic. I think I even went a little off on a tangent, but what do ya think? It's goin' to be quite a nice weddin'"
Lucy said to the two prospective couples in front of her. But they only laughed in a troubled manner and seemed to be in no way interested in getting married. Lucy senses this and comes up with the next plan.
"Hmmm. If neither the Republic nor the Archipelago Kingdom is acceptable, then the only plan left would be 'Let's get married at the historic association of the Euphoria Kingdom and walk through the Arc de Triomphe as a couple' ......"
"Oh, um......."
Then the bride was more hesitant to interject.
"Yes? What is it?"
"I'm sorry. Actually, I've already decided on the country where I want to have the ceremony......"
"Eh, is that so? That was presumptuous of me. And what country do ya want?"
"The Kingdom of Lastania"
At the bride's words, Lucy was dumbfounded for a moment.
"The Kingdom of Lastania ya say? The area has already recovered quite well, but I don't think there were any particular spots for weddins. Sorry, we don't have any plans that we offer either......"
"No, I don't care about the plan or anything. It's just...... that country is where my adopted father Hein rests"
So said the bride......Sami Chima with a small smile on her face. She was thinking of him. Günter Lyle, the taciturn groom seated next to her, gently hugs her shoulder.
"I am getting married to Lord Günther this time, and I want my adoptive father to see my bridal gown from the afterlife. However, both Günther and I belong to the Euphoria Kingdom now, and it is difficult to secure a place, personnel, and food for a wedding in another country. So I talked to Ichiha about it, and he suggested I ask Lucy, who has contacts in many countries"
"I, I that's why ya want it. I'm sorry for ma hasty......recommendations"
Lucy bowed her head and Sami hurriedly shook her head.
"I am not a good talker, so it was difficult for me to start the conversation. Günther is usually a man of few words"
Günther, who sat next to her, was embarrassed, his mouth tightened in a pout. For all his stern face, he seemed naïve, like a large, quiet dog. Lucy gave a single cooing cough.
"I'm relieved to hear ya say so. ......It's fine! Our company will do everything in our power to make sure that your late Father can see his daughter as a happy bride and feel at ease!"
Lucy then thumped her chest.
◇ ◇ ◇
--- After Sami and Günther had left.
After office hours. Lucy was in the manager's office, putting away the remaining documents, when suddenly there was a knock at the door and a young man entered.
"Thank you for your hard work, Representative. I brought you some tea"
"Evenin'. It's after business hours now, so just talk normally"
"......Yeah?'re the customers who came today?"
"It's a little complicated, but we'll make it work. We have to make a splendid ceremony for the bride"
He asked Lucy while offering her a cup of tea, and he was the number two of 'L. H. W.' and Lucy's right-hand man. And.......
"That's obvious......but is it okay?"
"Huh? What is?"
"You're offering them a great wedding, but ours should be a modest affair"
Yes, he was also Lucy's lifelong companion. He was originally an employee of Lucy's family's Evans Trading Company, but Lucy was drawn by his business acumen and honest character and pulled him into this 'L.H.W.'. As they worked together right and left on this new venture, they developed a bond that led to their engagement.
"But if you're a representative, you're connected to the royal family, and you could have made the ceremony more magnificent, couldn't you? ......Well, when I put it like that, it makes me wonder if it was really a good idea for you to get engaged to a regular guy like me"
To those words, Lucy laughed at him with a cackle.
"What're you talkin' about? This is 100 percent my ideal weddin' and husband. Many of my friends are in the upper echelons of society, and we've had our share of dramatic stories ......but I'd rather get married to a normal person and have a normal, happy family than ta have that kinda thin' happen ta me. ......Well, I guess it won't be completely normal, though, since we'll have royalty at the weddin'"
"I, Is that how it's supposed to be?"
He tilted his head, not quite grasping the female mind. Seeing him like this, Lucy giggles. She really likes that kind of honest response back. Then Lucy patted the engagement ring he had given her and said, with a lovely smile similar to that of a revered little raccoon princess.
"Let's be happy together, darlin'♪"

2023.05.28 08:28 Jacky_Boy_117 I just can’t with marvel

I’m well passed late to the party, I know, but I just watched Ant-Man: Quantumania and…what is this movie lol.
I want it to be known for starters, this is not a pure hatred post, I did ENJOY the movie. However I am speaking on a more comics focused perspective (much like a book viewers perspective to Harry Potter) and it just doesn’t work for me.
First off, the tone. It tries so hard in the first half to feel mysterious, ominous and frightening. When all it’s met with is mediocrity. The quantum realm is shown with nothing but bright and vibrant pretty colors and creatures and people. Then they reference HIM, the aaaall ominous and terrifying HIM…but nothing goes to show why he is powerful, at least not yet. I’m a sucker for the whole “show, don’t tell” rule as you can imagine.
Secondly, and let’s just get this out of the way, MODOK…why is he even in this movie lol. Say what you will on looks, he just did not hit that FEELING of unrelenting arrogance and power. MODOK is supposed to be full of himself, though in measurable reason-as he is a high level robotics and engineering intellectual mind. In this movie? Dumb as a stump!! He is like the hulk or drax or korg for crying out loud!! His final moments are spent as a joke and each time he’s on screen he’s treated as one because, well, HE IS ONE!!
Now finally, for my final part…Kang. Let me expand on this firstly. Kang? Was the best thing in this movie for me-and all due credit is given to Jonathan Majors (I am more than aware of his current ongoing legal issues, of which I do not support and am horribly appalled by). His portrayal screamed nothing short of all that Kang is: a conqueror. To be a figure of power, sheer confidence, willpower, drive and more is required. And he brings this in spades-not only this but he DOES portray the arrogant and self righteous ruler that he is! To boot, whenever he had moments of heart, moments to reflect and show his true underlying character? I swear he was the only person with true humanity to them, all others felt cliche to me.
Which lies my next problem. This Kang, self proclaimed to be exiled by THE council of Kangs…because they feared him. What this means is he is close to being the most powerful version of Kang…who gets taken down by ants and a guy who shrinks and grows. The figure, who can travel across space and time, dominate entire universes and then conquer the next? THE power house who killed hundreds of versions of the avengers; which do include mind you Thor, Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange-arguable massive power houses in the MCU to date…is beaten by ants…and a guy who grows and shrinks. I will leave this final thought: next avengers film-Avengers: Kang Dynasty. Huge, right? Daunting, terrifying, ominous, down right horrifying.
Just go get antman :) if he can’t beat antman, but supposedly can kill all of these avengers? There’s your ace in the sleeve! ANT MAN AND ALL HIS ANTS!!!
For any and all who did love this movie, all the love and wishes and good things in your future blessed on you. Truly. For the causal movie goer who loved this movie? I so hope you win a million dollars tomorrow and you see your grandma.
But for my comic comrades? Look how they massacred our boy.
7.5/10 (clearly IGN inspired rating)

2023.05.28 08:27 Sea_Salt_3227 10/30/74 New York Post + New York Daily News - Ali Foreman "Rumble in the Jungle" 200$?

10/30/74 New York Post + New York Daily News - Ali Foreman
I'm cleaning out my parents home and founded a sealed, airtight plastic bag with newspapers inside. There were 6 copies of the moon landing NYT, and a pair of newspapers from October 30th, 1974 commemorating Muhammad Ali's defeat of George Foreman in Zaire, the so-called "Rumble in the Jungle".

The papers are in remarkable condition. I'm trying to guage interest and set a price. The moon landing papers can go for a few hundred on occasion, so maybe 200$ for these two?
Anyone interested? Open to suggestions n negotiations.

2023.05.28 08:25 dragon_blood8 Ever since I read Reverend insanity I can't read anything at all

I've tried reading renegade immortal, I shall seal the heavens, way of the devil, the legendary mechanic, ze tian ju, release that witch, emperor's domination...
I even spent 700 chapters on lord of the mysteries and couldnt fathom why people like it so much, its way better than all classical novels but waay below reverend insanity its like a comparing a rank 8 to a rank 9, while other novels are rank 6 or 7
I go and read hundreds of chapters of other novel
Yet I come back I read like 10 chapters of reverend insanity, the Three kings blessed land
I reread another 15 chapters of the 88 building arc
And Omg the Peak of the Peak, no words can put the excitment and awe I'm in
honestly I didnt put reverend insanity in such a pedestal even though I fucking loved it yet when I started to read all the other trash I finally realised how absolutely majestic this novel is
No words can encapsulate this work for me
I even think reading this sub some people didnt read it correctly
I binged it alone in summer and omg its simply a blessing, the best moments of my life.
The poems, the wisdom in the legends of renzu, the relentlesness of Fang yuan, the Venerables, their poems and plans
Its like the author is a skilled sewer, he puts a thread here and there until the climax where all threads are pulled and you everything unfold and you see perfection truly, every chapter has its meaning in building the world, introducing characters who are smart, multi-faceted, the venerables sometimes are even more impressive than fang yuan himself, to be able to write something like thus
It even feels at times the entire world has plot armor and fang yuan alone has everything against him yet seeing him go through all that and win in triumph
I wish I could see Fang yuan achieve Eternal life and for me and I am sure that he will!
honestly what a shame seeing some people make fun of reverend insanity when its honestly the Uncontested Number One Story ever for me
There is nothing that can top this, the Fate war for me is also the pinnacle of what a story is truly
I wish I could support gu zhen ren, it feels unfair to read reverend insanity for free

2023.05.28 08:14 Visible-Rutabaga9268 To The Heat: From The Heart

I’m a first-generation immigrant who arrived stateside as a child, when my family fled economic & political devastation in Latin America.
Before relocating to South Florida, we originally settled in a rural part of the state where the linguistic & cultural barriers seemed impossible to overcome for a short, shy, Spanish-speaking boy surrounded by intolerant American neighbors.
Basketball broke barriers my broken English never imagined possible.
I desperately clung onto the sport as a means of assimilating into America and the Miami Heat eventually became my refuge, offering newfound community through shared fandom.
Now I’m certainly not the only immigrant to endure hardship and, frankly, my experiences are far from unique. However, throughout my life sports has not only served as a unifying medium, but also as a timestamp, capturing moments meant to be cherished forever.
I have lived through every Heat championship. But in 2006, I was too young to grasp the sport and in 2012 & 2013, I was too naive to appreciate our talent.
Last year was supposed to be our year. And this time I was ready for it. But a failed Game 7 comeback against Boston later, and suddenly it wasn’t. I was crushed. I’m sure many of you were too.
Personally, I wanted the Heat to validate my growth, celebrating the passage of time through a championship run. When we fell short in 2022, I wasn’t sure when we would find ourselves in that position again.
Yet here we are.
Against all odds.
Game 7.
Just like y’all, I want this badly. It hurts watching our 3-0 lead evaporate, especially against this particular Boston team. I’m angry and disappointed and at times outright numb.
Our frenzied fans, who nationally get a bad rap, showed up tonight and deserved a trip to the Finals. Terrible star play proved otherwise. Even a frantic, last-minute rally could not overcome largely lethargic efforts from Butler and Bam. Fuck Derrick White.
But as an avid fan who owes so much to the Miami Heat, I choose to believe.
I choose to believe our Cinderella 8-seed run isn’t over. I choose to believe Butler & Spo won’t oversee the first blown 3-0 lead in NBA history. I choose to believe Miami will channel buzzer-beating heartbreak into a hard-fought win on Boston’s parquet court come Monday night.
Feel free to let me know if you choose to believe too.
Let’s Go Heat!

2023.05.28 07:58 TreborsTactics Why do republicans always win?

Just that. Why does it always, for my whole life feel like minority republicans can seemingly pass every illegal law and repeal every law they want? Why are no democrats ever able to pass anything beneficial!? All I see is my rights being stolen every day. Every day a new law is passed by republicans that harms me or my loved ones… why can’t democrats ever win? They feel utterly useless. I just don’t get why no matter how much power they have in the house or senate or presidency or Supreme Court nothing comes of it. But the second republicans even get close to even numbers they ram racist illegal and facist laws through daily. What are we doing wrong. How long Can America hold together like this? Every day I’m more angry and disgusted. Why is no one doing anything?

Harnessing the Benefits of Population Growth: China's Military Evolution
When discussing the effects of a growing population on a nation, we often focus on the challenges it poses. However, it is important to consider the potential positive outcomes for a country experiencing rapid population growth. While this may seem counterintuitive, China provides an example of how a growing population can bring about positive changes, albeit in the past.
Decades ago, when China had a larger younger generation, they were able to harness the benefits of their growing population. The younger generation formed a strong military force, bolstering China's manpower. They adopted tactics that relied on overwhelming numbers to outperform their enemies, even if it meant accepting significant human losses. With a large pool of young people, China could readily replenish its forces and minimize the impact of casualties. This approach gave them a strategic advantage in offensive operations, particularly against defensive forces with fewer troops, as seen in the Indo-China War of 1962.
However, over time, this strategy became outdated. The Vietnamese studied and anticipated the Chinese tactics, adapting their own defenses accordingly. When the Chinese attempted to employ their traditional tactics against the Vietnamese troops, they encountered retreat and heavy fire, resulting in failure. The Chinese had to reevaluate their approach as their younger generation aged and the population began to decline. Recognizing the consequences and learning from past failures, China started preparing for future warfare.
China's current military strategy focuses on winning wars without direct engagement. They employ various domains such as information warfare, space technology, drones, UAVs, electronic warfare, and indirect fire tactics. Some of their tactics remain undisclosed. China's dominance in AI has further cemented its position as an aggressive and successful country in the present century.
So, instead of viewing a growing population solely as a problem, China serves as a reminder that it is possible to harness the positive benefits of population growth. By adapting their military strategies, embracing technological advancements, and capitalizing on their resources, China has emerged as a formidable force in the world today.

2023.05.28 07:29 Maleegee [EVENT] The Career of Giangiacomo "il Grande"

5 December 1518

Musical Accompaniment
Born in 1440 to Antonio Trivulzio and Francesca Visconti, minor Guelph nobles in Milan, Gian Giacomo Trivulzio was raised alongside Galeazzo Maria Sforza, and would spend much of his early life in his service.
His military career started in 1465, when at the age of 25 he accompanied Sforza's army to France, where they would fight on the side of King Louis XI against the League of Public Weal. This taste of blood was evidently rather satisfactory for Trivulzio, as he would spend the remainder of his life in military service.

Sforza and Montefeltro Service

In the 1460s, he fought in the service of the Sforzas against the famous Bartolomeo Colleoni - one of the greatest military minds of the 15th Century. Soon after, he moves to the service of Federico da Montefeltro, and fights in the infamous Battle of Riccardina, where the forces of Colleoni, Ercole d'Este, and Alessandro Sforza, as well as some Florentine families, faced off against an alliance of the Medicis, King Ferdinand I of Naples, and Federico da Montefeltro.
It is in this period that he marries his first wife, Margherita Colleoni - a distant relative of the famous Condottiero.

In 1478, he entered the service of the Medicis against the expansionist Pope Sixtus IV, defending the city of Florence in the wake of the Pazzi Conspiracy, until the Ottoman capture of Otranto forced a peace settlement.
In 1480, he purchased the castle of Mesocco. By 1496 the surrounding countryside will have joined the Three Leagues in Switzerland, by his permission.

Rossi War and Ludovico Sforza

In 1482, he enters the service of Ludovico Sforza, against the Rossi family of Parma, in rebellion against the Sforzas of Milan. As tensions built up between Ludovico Sforza - then Regent of Milan - and the other nobles of Milan, it was Trivulzio - then only a lieutenant to Costanza Sforza - who was entrusted with taking Parma. Trivulzio proved himself incredibly capable in the art of siege and harrying, devastating the lands loyal to the Rossi, and capturing alpine fortresses with great vigor. Making excellent headway, it was only the intervention of the Republic of Venice that stopped Trivulzio. His soldiers were transferred to the command of the Duke of Urbino - an old employer, Federico da Montefeltro. Eventually, Trivulzio would work his way to being the primary commander of Ludovico's forces in Milan, winning the war for the Milanese, defeating the Venetian army at Martinengo, and becoming Governor of Parma for the Sforzas.
His first wife died in 1485. She had given him one surviving son - Gian Niccolò Trivulzio, and a score of daughters.

Neapolitan Service

In 1488, he moves to Naples, and enters the service of Alfonso d'Aragon, Duke of Calabria. He would marry Beatrice d'Avalos, and would be appointed Commander of the army of Naples. It is in this period that Charles VIII invades Italy, after being invited into Milan by Ludovico Sforza.

Charles' War for Naples First Italian War (1494-1498)

Musical Accompaniment
In 1494, Trivulzio negotiated the surrender of Naples to Charles VIII, who, impressed by the man, hires him into French service, with the written permission of Ferdinand I of Naples. In 1495 he fought in the Battle of Fornovo in the service of the King of France, marching back to France with the army. He is appointed Marshal of France for his actions in the battle.

Second Italian War (1498-1503)

In 1498 Trivulzio was placed in charge of a large army by the new King Louis XII. He marched on Milan, and chased Ludovico Sforza, now Duke of Milan, to Innsbruck, where he bid the assistance of Maximilian of Austria.
In October 1499, Trivulzio entered Milan, and was appointed Governor.
In 1501, Trivulzio was again placed in charge of a French army - this time, he was intended to be in command of small contingents of French troops to hold river crossings. Instead, he found himself in the midst of the French Army in their victory at Gorgonzola. The French - employing great numbers of Swiss mercenaries, defeated an Imperial army marching alongside Ludovico Sforza.
In 1502, Trivulzio commanded the French army at (the later named First Battle of) San Martino, buying valuable time for the French to bring reinforcements across the alpine passes after the Fall of Savoy and save Milan from the Imperial incursions. Later in the year he would lead the French at Marzaglia, being bested by Cesare Borgia, and withdrawing to Reggio.
In 1503, Trivulzio commanded the French army at Monterosi, squaring off against the Spanish Army, with the Fate of the Eternal City at stake. Routing the Spanish, he drove south to the banks of the Garigliano River, before being finally stopped, not by the Spanish, but by his own supply lines.

War of the Second Italic League Third Italian War (1506-1509)

In 1506 Trivulzio commanded the French Army putting Modena to siege, taking it in early 1507. Having kicked a hornet's nest, Trivulzio was forced to withdraw from Modena, though stood up a valiant defence against a Venetian-Ferrarese army at Lodi.
With Milan in rebellion (in part to Trivulzio's poor governance), he withdrew from Milan, and met with the main French army in Novara.
In 1508 Trivulzio spearheaded the counterattack into Milan, which was then in Austrian hands. Crossing the Ticino, he met the main army under Georg von Frundsberg at Borgarello. Bloodying the Austrians, he forces them to withdraw, and is joined by Rohan-Gie and Trémoille, to defeat the Austrians and Venetians at the absolutely gargantuan Battle of Gaggiano. With the Austrians and Venetians defeated, Trivulzio set about restoring order to Milan. It is said that he attempted to put a stop to the worst of the sacking, but it is rather suspicious that most of the sacking hit the worst of the Ghibelline sections of the Duchy...
In 1509 Trivulzio oversaw the capture of Montferrat, and its subsequent integration into the Duchy of Milan.

Borgia War (1511-1512)

In 1511, following Cesare's attempt at seizing Rome and subsequent flight to Romagna, Trivulzio leads a Milanese army to the Romagna, where they put down Cesare Borgia alongside a Papal coalition by 1512. It was in this war that his son, Gian Niccolò passed - camp fever had taken him during a siege.

Francis' War for Naples Fourth Italian War (1512-1515)

Musical Accompaniment
With the betrayal of the Spanish, and the commencement of Francis' War for Naples, Trivulzio commanded a rear force in the siege of Pescara. With the fall of that city in 1513, he lead a supporting force to Francis, proving to be a mentor and moderating voice to the rapacious young Duc de Valois.

Lombard War Fifth Italian War (1515-1516)

By 1515, the French army in Naples was exhausted, and saw fit to retire north, as the Emperor had made a pact with the Venetians, and invaded Milan. Trivulzio fought a rearguard action against the Spanish, allowing the Duc de Valois to pursue a stunning victory against the Austrians and Venetians at Lodi, and yet again routing Maximilian and the Venetians from the Duchy of Milan.
Trivulzio's final actions came in 1516, where he took over the command of the army from the gravely wounded Duc de Nemours, and proceeded to assist in the seizure of Venetian Lombardy, and the subsequent Second Battle of San Martino.

Tired and contented, Trivulzio passes in his bed in the Castello Sforzecco on the 5th of December, 1518. He was 78 years of age. He is succeeded by his grandson, Gian Francesco Trivulzio.
It is said that Giangiacomo requested to be buried with a sword on his chest, instead of a cross. When asked why, he answered, "To scare the devils when they come for me."

2023.05.28 07:21 m_friedman Rules and Etiquette

Got a question about etiquette. Not really a dart player, but throw at bars about once a year when drinking with friends.
Wife and I were over at a friends house and the husband invites me to the garage for a game of darts. I say sure, why not. So I start warming up with the only darts I see and a couple of minutes later he joins me and says, “don’t get too comfortable with those darts, these are yours” and hands me three others. I could tell the “other” ones weren’t as expensive but I didn’t really care, they’d be fine for me. But it did strike me that he must be a somewhat serious player since he had special darts only he used.
So anyway, house rules….we play a modified game of cricket, except there’s no scoring once you close out a number. You just move to the next. He beats me the first game, and for the second game, he says we should play “around the horn” where you still can’t score after you close a number out, but you have to go in order, 20-15 and then bullseye. To our surprise, I win the second game in a close one.
So naturally, we agree to a rubber match. Around the horn again. I close 20 and 19 pretty quickly, and on my 4th turn, while he still only had a single 20 on the board….I approach the line and I missed my first dart, triple 18 on my second dart, and double 17 with my third.
Huge lead right!? For a basic novice too!
But a moment after my 3rd dart comes to rest on Dbl 17, the second dart on T18 falls off. He says it’s too bad, neither the Dbl 17 or Triple 18 count.
I look at him like he must be joking. What are the actual “rules” in this situation (are there any for “Around the Horn”) and what’s the general etiquette in a situation like this in a game amongst friends?
He took my scoring off the board and then he ended up winning the game but it pretty much soured the night by him being so “by the book” on the rules, especially when he’s throwing badass darts and I’ve got crap ones.
How would you darties assess this situation?
