2023.06.05 02:25 Upsidedown_Roo17 [Pc/Flash] [2010?] [Online point and click claymation style puzzle game]

Platform(s): Online PC/Flash I played it on a website called Nottdoppler
Genre: Puzzle, point and click
Estimated year of release: 2010 perhaps?
Graphics/art style: Stopmotion/claymation. 2D but like if you opened a doll house.
Notable characters: The main character had yellow skin, big eyes. Also maybe a big nose?
Other details: I remember 2 levels from the game. One level you were in a lab and had to use a machine to make you smell like different foods in order to avoid being eaten by 3 man eating plants in front of the door. In another level you were supposed to but these colored tiles: red, green, and blue, Into a panel and each color corresponded to a floating platform you were supposed to use clues to find out the pattern, the only way you could test would be to walk on the platform, if you got it wrong you'd fall and get chopped up by a pit of saws.

2023.06.05 02:01 livia2lima Day 1 - Get to know your server

INTRO

You should now have a remote server setup running the latest Ubuntu Server LTS (Long Term Support) version. You alone will be administering it. To become a fully-rounded Linux server admin you should become comfortable working with different versions of Linux, but for now Ubuntu is a good choice.
Once you have reached a level of comfort at the command-line then you'll find your skills transfer not only to all the standard Linux variants, but also to Android, Apple's OSX, OpenBSD, Solaris and IBM AIX. Throughout the course you'll be working on Linux - but in fact most of what is covered is applicable to any system in the "UNIX family" - and the major differences between them are with their graphic user interfaces such as Gnome, Unity, KDE etc - none of which you’ll be using!
Although there is a "root" user, you will be logging in and working from the user account that you setup. Because this is a member of the group "sudo" it is able to run commands "as root" by preceding them with "sudo".

YOUR TASKS TODAY:

INSTRUCTIONS

Remote access used to be done by the simple telnet protocol, but now the much more secure SSH (“Secure SHell) protocol is always used.
If you're using any Linux or Unix system, including Apple's MacOS, then you can simply open up a "terminal" session and use your command-line ssh client like this:
ssh user@
For example:
ssh [email protected]
On Linux distributions with a menu you'll typically find the terminal under "Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal", "Applications menu -> System -> Terminal" or "Menu -> System -> Terminal Program (Konsole)"- or you can simply search for your terminal application. In many cases Ctrl+Alt+T will also bring up a terminal windows.
If you have configured the remote server with your SSH public key (see "Password-less SSH login" in the EXTENSION section of this post), then you'll need to point to the location of the private part as proof of identity with the "-i" switch, typically like this:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa [email protected]
A very slick connection process can be setup with the .ssh/config feature - see the "SSH client configuration" link in the EXTENSION section below.
On an MacOS machine you'll normally access the command line via Terminal.app - it's in the Utilities sub-folder of Applications.
On recent Windows 10 versions, the same command-line client is now available, but must be enabled (via "Settings", "Apps", "Apps & features", "Manage optional features", "Add a feature", "OpenSSH client").
Alternatively, you can install the Windows Subsystem for Linux which gives you a full local command-line Linux environment, including an SSH client - ssh.
There are also GUI SSH clients for Windows (PuTTY, MobaXterm) and MacOS (Terminal.app, iTerm2). If you use Windows versions older than 10, the installation of PuTTY is suggested.
Regardless of which client you use, the first time you connect to your server, you may receive a warning that you're connecting to a new server - and be asked if you wish to "cache the host key". Do this. Now, if you get a warning in future connections it means that either: (a) you are being fooled into connecting to a different machine or (b) someone may be trying a "man in the middle" attack.
So, now login to your server as your user - and remember that Linux is case-sensitive regarding user names, as well as passwords.
Once logged in, notice that the "command prompt" that you receive ends in $ - this is the convention for an ordinary user, whereas the "root" user with full administrative power has a # prompt.
Try these simple commands:
ls
uptime
free
df -h
uname -a
If you're using a password to login (rather than public key), then now is a good time to ensure that this is very strong and unique - i.e. At least 10 characters - because your server is fully exposed to bots that will be continuously attempting to break in. Use the passwd command to change your password. To do this, think of a new, secure password, then simply type passwd, press “Enter” and give your current password when prompted, then the new one you've chosen, confirm it - and then WRITE IT DOWN somewhere. In a production system of course, public keys and/or two factor authentication would be more appropriate.
It's very handy to be able to cut and paste text between your remote session and your local desktop, so spend some time getting confident with how to do this in your setup.
Log out by typing exit.
You'll be spending a lot of time in your SSH client, so it pays to spend some time customizing it. At the very least try "black on white" and "green on black" - and experiment with different monospaced fonts, ("Ubuntu Mono" is free to download, and very nice).

POSTING YOUR PROGRESS

Regularly posting your progress can be a helpful motivator. Feel free to post to the subreddit a small introduction of yourself, and your Linux background for your "classmates" - and notes on how each day has gone.
A discord server is also available.
Of course, also drop in a note if you get stuck or spot errors in these notes.

WRAP

You now have the ability to login remotely to your own server. Perhaps you might now try logging in from home and work - even from your smartphone! - using an ssh client app such as "Termux". As a server admin you'll need to be comfortable logging in from all over. You can also potentially use JavaScript ssh clients (search for "consolefish"), or from a cybercafe - but these options involve putting more trust in third-parties than most sysadmins would be comfortable with when accessing production systems.

A NOTE ON "HARDENING"

Your server is protected by the fact that its security updates are up to date, and that you've set Long Strong Unique passwords - or are using public keys. While exposed to the world, and very likely under continuous attack, it should be perfectly secure. Next week we'll look at how we can view those attacks, but for now it's simply important to state that while it's OK to read up on "SSH hardening", things such as changing the default port and fail2ban are unnecessary and unhelpful when we're trying to learn - and you are perfectly safe without them.

EXTENSION

If this is all too easy, then spend some time reading up on:

2023.06.05 02:00 livia2lima Day 0 - Creating Your Own Local Server

READ THIS FIRST! HOW THIS WORKS & FAQ

It's difficult to create a server in cloud without a credit card

We normally recommend using Amazon's AWS "Free Tier" or Digital Ocean - but both require that you have a credit card. The same is true of the Microsoft Azure, Google's GCP and the vast majority of providers listed at Low End Box (https://lowendbox.com/).
Some will accept PayPal, or Bitcoin - but typically those who don't have a credit card don't have these either.
WARNING: If you go searching too deeply for options in this area, you're very likely to come across a range of scammy, fake, or fraudulent sites. While we've tried to eliminate these from the links below, please do be careful! It should go without saying that none of these are "affiliate" links, and we get no kick-backs from any of them :-)

Cards that work as, or like, credit cards

But what if I don’t want to use a cloud provider? You can just work with a local virtual machine

You can run the challenge on a home server and all the commands will work as they would on a cloud server. However, not being exposed to the wild certainly loses the feel of what real sysadmins have to face.
If you set your own VM at a private server, go for the minimum requirements like 1GHz CPU core, 1GB RAM, and a couple of gigs of disk space. You can always adapt this to your heart's desire (or how much hardware you have available).
Our recommendation is: use a cloud server if you can, to get the full experience, but don't get limited by it. This is your server.

Download the Linux ISO

Go to the Official Ubuntu page and download the latest LTS (Long Term Support) available version.
NOTE: download the server version, NOT the desktop version.

Create a Virtual Machine with VirtualBox

Install VirtualBox, when ready: * Click on Machine > New * Give a name to your VM and select the Type Linux. Click Next. * Adjust hardware: 1024MB memory and 1 CPU (this is the minimum, but you can reserve more if your host machine can provide it). Click Next * Virtual hard disk: 2,5GB is minimum, 5GB is a good number. Click Next. * Finish but we're not done yet. * The new VM should show up in a list of VMs, select it. * Click on Machine > Settings * Click on Storage. Right-click on Controllet IDE, click on Optical Drive. * Select the ISO from the list if available, if not click Add and find it in your directories. Click Choose. * Click on Network and change the network adapter to Bridged Adapter. * Click OK * Click Start or Machine > Start > Normal Start.

Installing Linux

After a few seconds the welcome screen will load. At the end of each page there's DONE and BACK buttons. Use arrow keys and the enter key to select options. When you're ok with your selection, use the arrow key to go down to DONE and enter to go to the next page.

Logging in for the first time

After the first reboot, it will show a black screen asking for the login. That's when you use that username and password you created during the install.
Note: the password will not show up, not even ***, just trust that is taking it in.
If you need to find out the IP address for the VM, just type in the console:
ip address
That will give you the inet, i.e., the ip address.

Remote access via SSH

If you are using windows download Putty and follow the instructions to connect.
If you are on Linux or MacOS, open a terminal and run the command:
ssh [email protected]_address
Enter your password
Voila! You have just accessed your system inside your private network.

You are now a sysadmin

Confirm that you can do administrative tasks by typing:
sudo apt update
Then:
sudo apt upgrade -y
Don't worry too much about the output and messages from these commands, but it should be clear whether they succeeded or not. (Reply to any prompts by taking the default option). These commands are how you force the installation of updates on an Ubuntu Linux system, and only an administrator can do them.
REBOOT
When a kernel update is identified in this first check for updates, this is one of the few occasions you will need to reboot your server, so go for it after the update is done:
sudo reboot now
Your server is now all set up and ready for the course!
Note that: * This server is now running but is not exposed to the Internet, i.e. other people will not be able to attempt to connect. We recommend you keep it that way. It is one thing to expose a server in the cloud, exposing your home network is another story. For your own security, don't do it.
To logout, type logout or exit.

When you are done

Just type:
sudo shutdown now
Or click on Force Shutdown

Some Other Options

Now you are ready to start the challenge. Day 1, here we go!

2023.06.05 02:00 livia2lima Day 0 - Creating Your Own Server in the Cloud (but cheaper)

READ THIS FIRST! HOW THIS WORKS & FAQ

INTRO

First, you need a server. You can't really learn about administering a remote Linux server without having one of your own - so today we're going to buy one!
Through the magic of Linux and virtualization, it's now possible to get a small Internet server setup almost instantly - and at very low cost. Technically, what you'll be doing is creating and renting a VPS ("Virtual Private Server"). In a datacentre somewhere, a single physical server running Linux will be split into a dozen or more Virtual servers, using the KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) feature that's been part of Linux since early 2007.
In addition to a hosting provider, we also need to choose which "flavour" of Linux to install on our server. If you're new to Linux then the range of "distributions" available can be confusing - but the latest LTS ("Long Term Support") version of Ubuntu Server is a popular choice, and what you'll need for this course.

Signing up with a VPS

Sign-up is immediate - just provide your email address and a password of your choosing and you're in! To be able to create a VM, however, you may need to provide your credit card information (or other information for billing) in the account section.

Comparison

Provider Instance Type vCPU Memory Storage Price Trial Credits
Digital Ocean Basic Plan 1 1 GB 25 GB SSD $6.00 $200 / 60 days
Linode Nanode 1GB 1 1 GB 25 GB SSD $5.00 $100 / 60 days
Vultr Cloud Compute - Regular 1 1 GB 25 GB SSD $5.00 $250 / 30 days
For more details: * Get started with Digital Ocean * Get started with Linode

Create a Virtual Machine

The process is basically the same for all these VPS, but here some step-by-steps:

VM with Digital Ocean (or Droplet)

VM with Linode (or Node)

VM with Vultr

Logging in for the first time with console

We are going to access our server using SSH but, if for some reason you get stuck in that part, there is a way to access it using a console:

Remote access via SSH

You should see an "Public IPv4 address" entry for your server, this is its unique Internet IP address, and is how you'll connect to it via SSH (the Secure Shell protocol) - something we'll be covering in the first lesson.
If you are using windows download Putty and follow the instructions to connect.
If you are on Linux or MacOS, open a terminal and run the command:
ssh [email protected]_address
Or, using the SSH private key, ssh -i private_key [email protected]_address
Enter your password
Voila! You have just accessed your server remotely.
In doubt, consult the complementary video

Creating a working admin account

We want to follow the Best Practice of not logging as "root" remotely, so we'll create an ordinary user account, but one with the power to "become root" as necessary, like this:
adduser snori74
usermod -a -G adm snori74
usermod -a -G sudo snori74
(Of course, replace 'snori74' with your name!)
This will be the account that you use to login and work with your server. It has been added to the 'adm' and 'sudo' groups, which on an Ubuntu system gives it access to read various logs and to "become root" as required via the sudo command.
To login using your new user, copy the SSH key from root.

You are now a sysadmin

Confirm that you can do administrative tasks by typing:
apt update
Then:
apt upgrade -y
Don't worry too much about the output and messages from these commands, but it should be clear whether they succeeded or not. (Reply to any prompts by taking the default option). These commands are how you force the installation of updates on an Ubuntu Linux system, and only an administrator can do them.
REBOOT
When a kernel update is identified in this first check for updates, this is one of the few occasions you will need to reboot your server, so go for it after the update is done:
reboot now
Your server is now all set up and ready for the course!
Note that: * This server is now running, and completely exposed to the whole of the Internet * You alone are responsible for managing it * You have just installed the latest updates, so it should be secure for now
To logout, type logout or exit.

When you are done

You should be safe running the VM during the month for the challenge, but you can Stop the instance at any point. It will continue to count to the bill, though.
When you no longer need the VM, Terminate/Destroy instance.
Now you are ready to start the challenge. Day 1, here we go!

2023.06.05 02:00 livia2lima Day 0 - Creating Your Own Server - with Azure Free Credits

READ THIS FIRST! HOW THIS WORKS & FAQ

INTRO

Refer to Day 0 - Creating Your Own Server in the Cloud for more.

Signing up with Azure

Sign-up is fairly simple - just provide your email address and a password of your choosing - along with a phone number for a 2FA - a second method of authentication. Azure can be a bit funny about 'corporate' email addresses, eg using a work address or your own domain. Create a new @outlook or @gmail.com account if so using the link on the sign-up page. You will need to also provide your VISA or other credit card information.
Now to fully expose the machine and all ports to the internet:
This opens all ports and protocols to access from anywhere. While this might be unwise for a production server, it is what we want for this course.

Remote access via SSH

Ensure your machine is 'running' (if not, click 'start') and connect using the 'connect -> ssh' dropdown and following instructions
You will be logging in as the user azureuser. It has been added to the 'adm' and 'sudo' groups, which on an Ubuntu system gives it access to read various logs - and to "become root" as required via the sudo command.

You are now a sysadmin

Confirm that you can do administrative tasks by typing:
sudo apt update
(Normally you'd expect this would prompt you to confirm your password, but because you're using public key authentication the system hasn't prompted you to set up a password - and Azure have configured sudo to not request one for "azureuser").
Then:
sudo apt upgrade
Don't worry too much about the output and messages from these commands, but it should be clear whether they succeeded or not. (Reply to any prompts by taking the default option). These commands are how you force the installation of updates on an Ubuntu Linux system, and only an administrator can do them.
To logout, type logout or exit.
Your server is now all set up and ready for the course!

2023.06.05 01:52 sxert Ender 3 Pro with SKR BTT e3 v2.0 - Flashed Wrong, is it bricked?

Hello everyone,
I'll try to be as specific as possible here so this can be a long read. I'll post a tl;dr at the end of the post.
My aunt started me in the 3d printing hobby. She bought an Ender 3 Pro from a hobbyist friend.
This friend of hers really likes to mess with modifications for 3D printers but he's unreliable.
With that being said, the 3d printer he sold to my aunt is an Ender 3 Pro.
I have an Ender 3 v2 and installed Klipper with a few hiccups, but I got it working. I really like the result of Klipper on my Ender 3 v2 and I said to my aunt that is awesome.
She asked me if I could do that to her printer as well. I follow the same instructions for my Ender 3 v2, but she didn't tell me that her model was different from mine (The friend didn't tell her the difference). I didn't go for a visual difference because I just assumed that it was modded and different than the stock printer.
The screen is not working (the screen is lighting up, but nothing appears on it).
Every time that I tried to flash, the .bin file became a .cur file. (I read online that this change indicates that it successfully flashed the firmware).
She told me that her friend remembered that the model was different and I tried to restore it to the original firmware, but it didn't work (I think).
I then tried to flash to the correct firmware (Ender 3 Pro for Klipper), but it still didn't work.
This friend of my aunt forgot to also mention that he changed the original board to an SKR BTT mini e3 v2, so I tried again to flash to the correct firmware again. But it's still not working.
I tried flashing the original firmware (SKR BTT mini e3 v2.0) and the screen was not working.
The problem with Klipper (I'm using a Linux Mint, instead), is that it's not recognizing the printer when I connect the USB cable. (The /dev/serial/by-id* path)
I'm using the same machine (Linux Mint) with my Ender 3 v2 and it's working just fine.
I tried different USB ports and different cables. I tried connecting it in different orders (printer off + computer on + cables connected, printer on + computer on + cables connected etc).
Should I consider that the board is bricked or do you have any other tips that I can try?
tl;dr: Flashed the wrong firmware, is my board bricked?

Hi
I recently setup an additional DP on a new network. However when trying to image a machine via the PXE responder it seems to error out at the first part "Applying Operating System" with the error message 0x800700002.
The error code 0x80070002 means the system cannot find the file specified.
I am also not able to install any applications from this DP to any machine on that network.
The whole SCCM environment runs in PKI
The main site server which has all the roles install on it seems to work fine. I can PXE boot and image desktops and push applications fine.
Screenshot of my boundaries setup - https://imgur.com/a/4vBUDtH
All my content is distributed to a DP Group.
Content status for all content on the DPs and DP Group are showing green and successfully distributed.
I have a Web cert for the IIS on the main site server and a DP cert. All this works fine on the main site server.
I have used the same DP cert from my main site on the new DP.
The drives on the new server are setup as follows - https://imgur.com/a/1YTv2GY
I am testing by trying to install Notepad++ on a VM on the new network. The Location server logs show it can see the new DP but the Notepad++ app in software centre is just stuck 0% downloading.
I am seeing these error in CIDownloader.log - https://imgur.com/a/c9fbgwG
The firewall connections are open so everything can talk to eachother.
Not sure what is causing this. I am thinking something with certs maybe??
Do I need a web server cert for the new DP also?
Any ideas hope the above is enough info to help.

Thanks

Burlington Northern SD70 MAC
With summer break now upon me I've had time to start several digital models to add to my ever growing list of models I want to build. This one sits pretty high up on the priority list with the brick train awards just around the corner. Unfortunately, this model needs 4 left 2x2 wedge plates in dark green that are very rare to come by, averaging around $40 each on bricklink and only have 6 listing currently worldwide. Instructions? Who knows I'm quite backlogged with other models and do not know when I will get around to building this

2023.06.05 01:04 North-Message4754 Our sleepy town has a secret that can't be revealed. [PART 1]

Please note that names have been changed for the sake of anonymity, as have also some events for the sake of simplicity and to help you understand the personalities.
Our city, once a humble town nestled in the embrace of the Andes Mountains, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years. Evolving into a bustling capital and a prominent city within our country, it now stands as a symbol of progress and growth. Yet, beneath its surface of modernity and development, lies a hidden truth, a dark side that lurks in the shadows, concealed from the eyes of the uninitiated. It is a truth woven into the fabric of our city's history, whispered in tales of terror, and attributed to the elusive and enigmatic presence known as the "Twilight Menace." While outsiders may dismiss it as mere legend or the machinations of a criminal underworld, we, the locals, know better. We live in perpetual fear of this unseen terror that haunts our city.
And now, I find myself compelled to share this story with you, even as the memetic hazard surrounding the Twilight Menace threatens to erode my sense of reason. It is as if I am speaking to an inanimate object rather than a person, yet something within me tells me that you, a foreigner, possess the curiosity and open-mindedness necessary to understand and appreciate the fascinating and eerie history of our city.
Let me provide you with some much-needed context. The Twilight Menace is a term we have assigned to a group of nocturnal predators that have plagued our city for generations. They consist of ten distinct subspecies, each possessing its own unique characteristics and hunting techniques. Allow me to shed light on a few of them.
First among them are the Shadow Stalkers. These humanoid creatures boast pale or dark skin, sharp features, and unnaturally elongated limbs. Strikingly, they lack eyes, relying instead on their heightened sense of smell and acute hearing to track their unsuspecting prey. Like all members of the Twilight Menace, they are vaporized upon exposure to sunlight. Shadow Stalkers move with eerie silence within the shadows, patiently observing their targets for hours, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. It is worth noting that the largest known hunting party of Shadow Stalkers comprised a mere four members, prompting them to refrain from attacking when faced with a numerical advantage or disadvantage. The only known defense against them is to gather in groups of five or more, for it seems that their hunting instincts are deterred by such a formidable force.
Next, we encounter the Night Terrors, smaller and more agile than their Shadow Stalker counterparts. These creatures are adorned with fur as dark as the night itself, possessing razor-sharp jaws, claws, and piercing, luminescent eyes that aid their vision in the darkest of environs. What sets them apart is their uncanny ability to create illusions, disorienting their prey and rendering them vulnerable to capture. Similar to their brethren, they dissipate into nothingness upon exposure to sunlight. Unlike the Shadow Stalkers, however, the Night Terrors exhibit no hesitation in attacking their victims even when faced with a numerical disadvantage.
Another subspecies of the Twilight Menace is the Dread Fiends, hulking creatures draped in dark fur and bearing piercing yellow eyes that emit an otherworldly glow. They possess unmatched speed and move through the darkness with uncanny silence, often launching surprise attacks from behind. Their powerful jaws and claws allow them to mercilessly rend their victims apart, reveling in sadistic pleasure as they toy with their prey before finally delivering the fatal blow.
We must also contend with the Blood Mist Creatures, amorphous blobs of mist capable of shape-shifting at will. These entities often assume the form of a menacing, misty cloud, complete with glowing red eyes that flicker ominously. Their method of attack involves engulfing their prey in their ethereal mist, suffocating them while simultaneously absorbing their life-giving blood.
The ranks of the Twilight Menace also include the Silent Horrors, tall and gaunt figures reminiscent of the Shadow Stalkers. They possess long, spindly limbs and an eerie absence of facial features. Swift and soundless in their movements, they strike from the shadows, relying on their ability to induce paralyzing fear within their victims before delivering the final, fatal blow.
Another formidable adversary is the Dark Whispers, small and ghostly creatures resembling a swirling black mist adorned with gleaming green eyes. These elusive entities can effortlessly traverse through walls and floors, making them virtually impossible to evade. With their insidious whispers, they sow seeds of madness in the minds of their victims, driving them to the brink of insanity before ultimately sealing their fate.
The Graveyard Ghosts, skeletal apparitions with glowing red eyes, haunt the resting places of the deceased, emerging from the ground to assail unsuspecting victims. Their unique ability to phase through solid objects grants them an advantage in their pursuit of prey.
Among the Twilight Menace, we also encounter the Moon Howlers, creatures reminiscent of wolves with their black fur and hauntingly radiant blue eyes. These formidable hunters operate in packs, utilizing their sharp teeth and claws to bring down their chosen targets. Their haunting howls under the moonlight have a paralyzing effect, rendering their victims immobile with fear and vulnerability. The Moon Howlers are known to encircle their prey, amplifying the terror and panic experienced before delivering the final, fatal strike.
No discussion of the Twilight Menace would be complete without mentioning the Soul Snatchers, small and elusive creatures cloaked in shadows, their purple eyes glowing with an unholy light. Possessing an ethereal nature, they can effortlessly phase through walls and floors, rendering physical barriers futile. The Soul Snatchers are infamous for their ability to steal the very souls of their victims, leaving behind only empty shells of once vibrant beings.
Lastly, we have the Phantom Hunters, tall and ethereal figures that appear ghostlike, their piercing white eyes glowing with an otherworldly radiance. Often found in areas burdened by great tragedy or loss, these relentless hunters show no mercy to their prey. With the ability to pass through solid objects, they haunt their victims relentlessly, seizing control of their very essence before ultimately snuffing out their lives.
The abilities possessed by these entities may indeed instill terror and a sense of hopelessness. It may appear as though there is no conceivable way to counter their menace. However, there exists a method to confront and challenge them, albeit one that is only accessible to a chosen few. Fortunately, I am among the privileged individuals bestowed with this ability. My means of defense manifests in the form of a sword, an instrument of freezing cold capable of temporarily banishing these entities back to their home realm, known as the twilight lands.
You may wonder about the fate of those who lack the means to defend themselves. Do they inevitably succumb to the Twilight Menace? This is where the second part of the legend takes hold. We possess a protector, a human chosen from the multitude, tasked with wielding the fabled sword of Nott. Despite its connotation in certain languages, the sword stands as a potent tool bestowed upon the most loyal subject of the sun god, harnessing the very power of the sun itself. Any adversary unfortunate enough to cross paths with this radiant weapon is instantly consumed by its searing light, vanishing into oblivion. This chosen protector assumes the mantle of "Phantome."
The enigmatic Phantome remains veiled in mystery, an elusive figure who seemingly possesses the ability to be present in multiple locations simultaneously. They are the sole individuals granted permission to traverse the realm of the Twilight Menace, engaging in communication with these ethereal beings. Although no one has ever laid eyes upon Phantome, the blinding brilliance of the sword's collision with the enemy stands as a testament to their unwavering presence and devotion.
Let me introduce myself properly. My name is Sean van Delphi, and I'm no ordinary teenager. At just 15 years old, I have already faced more dangers and challenges than most adults. As a monster hunter, it's my job to protect the city from supernatural threats that lurk in the shadows. But that's not all there is to my life. When I'm not fighting monsters, I'm just a regular high school student. I attend New Lands, a private school located near my home. To get there, I ride my trusty electric bicycle - I mean, why waste energy on pedaling when I can conserve it for hunting down creatures of the night?
My house may be small, but it's my home. It was built when this area was still rural, but over time it has become a suburban haven, located just outside the bustling capital city. And believe me, when I say that what I'm about to tell you might sound unbelievable, I really mean it. But I need you to trust me, because what I'm about to share is the truth - and the truth can be stranger than fiction.
I live with the monsters I hunt.
My last name is not commonly found in this part of the world, with its European roots (until I experienced the supernatural firsthand, I was skeptical of the legends). My parents, a Dutch father and a Polish mother, chose this small Andean city as the place to start their new life together, and I was born shortly after their arrival. While I wish I could say more about them, my memories of my parents are few, but I do know that they loved me dearly and sacrificed everything for me. Their loss is one of the main reasons why I hunt monsters.
After my parents' death, I was left alone in the world. I spent at least a year wandering the city like a vagabond before stumbling upon my new family: a group of Phantom Hunters. They were searching for survivors of an explosion that had occurred in a nearby restaurant and, in my desperation, I was prepared to become possessed by a supernatural entity. Instead, they took me in and brought me to their home. I still don't understand why they were willing to take such a risk on a stranger, but I am eternally grateful for their kindness and generosity.
With the context out of the way, I’ll tell you my story and how it changed this city forever. It was a normal day, as normal as it can get in this city. I was at school, bored out of my mind, the teacher was giving a lecture about Figurative Language. I guess it was important to learn English but the way the teacher spoke about it just made me want to sleep. I yawned, then nudged my friend Mike to keep him awake. If I was going to be tormented by idioms, he was going to be tormented by metaphors and similes too. I glanced at the clock, it read 1:15 p.m.. Only 5 more minutes until recess, I thought, you just need to stay awake for 5 more minutes Sean. I then glanced at the schedule, I groaned, it was a monday, which meant we had English, recess and then English again. I wanted to kill myself, I wouldn’t be able to last those last 40 minutes. Time ticked by extremely slowly, I swear I nodded off at least 15 times before the bell rang, indicating that recess had started.
As I did every day, I headed to the nearest court, where all my friends were, to play volleyball. Today, however, the teacher denied us a ball, so we were left on our own trying to find what to do. I remember myself thinking Oh god, first English class and then this while I made my way to the parking lot, where there are 2 basketball courts. On the way, I passed through some young ones playing soccer. I figured I had nothing else to do so I took a seat at the edge of the field and watched the game unfold. I knew some of the people that were playing because my adoptive… foster brother was their age and up until some years ago he had been in the same school as me, that was until he decided to change to his old school. Oh, sorry I forgot, over the years, my family has adopted 2 other people, my brother (not related by blood) who is 12 years old, and my little sister (also not related by blood) who just turned 5 last week.
As I was saying, I had just taken a seat to admire the game when I was approached by 3 girls, they seemed the same age as my brother so I dismissed it as probably some of his friends coming to ask me “Oh, are you Jean’s older brother?”. I won’t disclose a lot of details about this conversation because I don’t really remember it that much, but I remember the start of the conversation because it was hilarious.
“Hi! Do you know she likes you?” the girl to the left, she was of average height, had a slightly tanned skin tone and wore glasses, greeted me cheerfully at the end of her dialogue she pointed to the one in the middle, a little bit taller than the first had a pale skin tone and a dark brown hair, the latter put a hand on the girl’s mouth only to recoil with an “EWWW”; they started bickering and wouldn’t calm down for at least five minutes.
“I’m sorry for my friends’ behavior,” The third girl interrupted, by far the tallest of them, standing just five or six inches shorter than me, even though I’m a good 5’9”, she had the appearance of a foreigner, I didn’t know many locals who were blonde with blue eyes, she spoke with a slightly off tone and when I looked at her in the eyes, I felt like my fight or flight instinct was kicking in, panic bells rang off inside my head, but not because I was talking to someone I liked, I didn’t, this feeling… I had only felt this feeling when my life was in imminent danger, like if I was being followed by a shadow stalker. “Name’s Zeph” It took me a moment to react, “Sean”. “Good to meet you” she said, and then proceeded to introduce her still bickering friends. “She’s Holly” she said as she pointed to the one in the middle, “and she is Sam” she pointed to the one on the left. The conversation that ensued in something I can’t recall, the only thing I remember is feeling weary all the time. There was this aura of calmness emanating from Zeph, it was so calm that it bothered me, like how a silent horror would attack its prey.
After the conversation, I left the soccer field and headed to the basketball court where Mike and the others were. I quickly told them what had happened, and Mike was ecstatic. “You’ve got yourself a girlfriend, Sean!” he said, with a huge grin on his face. “Shut up, Mike, I don’t even know if she likes me like that,” I replied, rolling my eyes. We started playing basketball, and I couldn’t stop thinking about Zeph. There was something strange about her, something that made me feel uneasy.
The bell rang, indicating that recess was over, and we headed back to class. I couldn’t focus on the lecture, my mind kept wandering back to Zeph. I decided to look her up on social media, and to my surprise, I found her profile easily. I scrolled through her pictures, trying to learn more about her. There were pictures of her at the beach, pictures of her with her friends, and even pictures of her playing guitar. I couldn’t shake off the feeling that there was something off about her, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
The next day passed by slowly, and as soon as the bell rang, indicating that classes were over, I rushed home. I went straight to my room, turned on my computer, and started researching. I spent hours reading about different cultures, different religions, and different beliefs. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with Zeph, but I knew that there was something.
Days passed, and I couldn’t get Zeph out of my head. I tried talking to her, but every time I did, I felt the same uneasiness that I felt the first time we talked. I decided to talk to my parents about her, but they didn’t seem to know anything about her. I tried talking to my friends, but they just laughed at me, thinking it was some sort of lame excuse to try to throw them off of bothering me with her. Then, one day out of the blue, the group of three decided that I was their perfect victim to their bickering.
As I waited for my parents to come and pick me up from school, I couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling that crept up on me. My bicycle had been totaled in an earlier fight, and I didn't feel comfortable walking, especially in the areas where darkness lingered, tempting unsuspecting victims into traps. Ignoring the ominous atmosphere, I tried to focus on something else, anything else.
"Hey!" Suddenly, I felt someone grab my arm, sending shivers down my spine. Sensitivity to touch was a part of my condition, and physical contact with others often made me feel claustrophobic. I turned to see who had grabbed me and found myself face to face with Holly. The proximity made me jump, and I knew I had to keep my guard up in case of a fight.
As I tried to compose myself, I felt something move behind me. I tried to turn around, but when I did, there was nothing there. Dread filled me, and I debated whether to draw my sword or not. In the end, I decided against it.
I turned my attention back to Holly, only to be met by Zeph, who appeared out of nowhere and scared me out of my wits. The uneasy feeling in my gut grew stronger, and I couldn't help but wonder what kind of trouble I had gotten myself into.
Out of the shadows emerged Sam, whom I hadn't noticed before. My gut feeling intensified as I looked around, trying to find a way to escape. I was trapped, backed against a tree and surrounded by a group of wild 12-year-olds.
"How are you doing?" Sam grinned, her glasses reflecting the sun, hiding her eyes. I searched for a way out and saw Holly standing arrogantly in front of me, while Zeph was on my right. As soon as I met Zeph's gaze, I expected to feel a sense of dread, but instead, I felt nothing.
“Hey, don’t be rude. Sam asked you a question,” Holly said, stepping closer to me. I could feel her breath on my face.
“I’m fine,” I managed to say, trying to keep my voice steady. “Just waiting for my parents.”
“Oh, we know,” Zeph said, stepping closer to me as well. “We just wanted to chat. You know, get to know each other better.”
I swallowed hard, feeling like a trapped animal. “I really need to go. My parents are waiting.”
“Oh, come on,” Sam said, moving closer to me too. “We’re not going to hurt you.”
But I knew better. These kids were trouble, and I had a feeling that they were up to no good. I looked around, trying to find an escape route, but I was surrounded.
Just as I was about to panic, I heard the sound of a car pulling up. Relief washed over me as I saw my parents getting out of the car. The group of kids scattered, disappearing into the shadows like they had never been there
I quickly walked towards my parents, feeling safe now that they were there. As we drove away, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of trouble those kids would get into next. And I made a mental note to avoid them at all costs in the future.
I got into the car, my dad was there, the vehicle was dark, so his shining white eyes were so easily found. “Who are those people that were talking with you” He said, his speech a mix of natural sounds and low screeches, it was the Twilight Lang, their form of speech I had learnt through the years.
“They are some weird friends” I answered him, shuddering, then added “Thanks for saving me there, you were just on time”
I don’t know if he knew something was off or he was just suspicious of something but he looked directly at me through the rearview mirror, his pale face a mix of worry and relief.
“I’m glad to be of help, as always” We didn’t speak more during the return trip, he left me to wonder what my fate would’ve been if he hadn’t shown up just then.
As we arrived home, I went straight to my room, feeling exhausted and relieved at the same time. I lay on my bed, thinking about the events that had just occurred. I knew I had to be more careful in the future and avoid getting into situations like that.
But the nagging feeling in my gut wouldn't go away. I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to the encounter than what I had seen. I wondered why those kids had targeted me, and what they had wanted from me.
I went to school the next day, still feeling a bit uneasy after the encounter with the group of kids. As I walked through the halls, I caught glimpses of the girls from the day before. It was strange, but I didn't feel the same sense of dread that I had before. In fact, Zeph seemed different somehow, as if her aura of calmness had suddenly disappeared, at least for me.
As the day went on, I tried to avoid them as much as possible. I didn't want to get involved with them again, especially after what had happened the day before. However, they seemed to be everywhere, like they were purposely trying to cross paths with me.
At lunchtime, I sat alone in the cafeteria, trying to eat my sandwich in peace. But soon enough, Holly and Sam appeared at my table, uninvited.
"Hey there," Holly said, smirking at me. "Mind if we join you?"
I didn't really have a choice, so I just shrugged and nodded. They sat down across from me, and I couldn't help but feel uneasy.
"So" Holly said, looking expectantly at me. She didn't say anything more so silence reigned over our table.
"So?" I asked, eager to break the muteness in the air
Holly leaned forward, a wicked glint in her eye. "We were just wondering if you've changed your mind yet. About joining our group, I mean."
I shook my head, they hadn’t asked me anything before, but I wasn’t going to join their group even if I wanted to die. "No, I haven't changed my mind. I don't think I want to be a part of your group."
Holly's smile faded, and her expression turned cold. "Well, that's too bad. We could've had some fun together."
I tried not to let her words affect me, but I couldn't help feeling a little scared. What did she mean by "fun"? And why did they seem so fixated on me?
The rest of lunch was uncomfortable, and I couldn't wait to leave the cafeteria. As I walked down the hallway, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned around and saw Zeph walking towards me.
"Hey," she said, her voice soft and hesitant. "Can we talk?"
I was surprised by her sudden change in demeanor, but I nodded anyway. We walked to an empty classroom and sat down at a desk.
"I just wanted to apologize," Zeph said, looking down at her hands. "For what happened yesterday. We didn't mean to scare you like that."
I wasn't sure if I believed her, but I appreciated the apology nonetheless. "Thanks," I said, still feeling wary.
Zeph looked up at me, her eyes searching mine. "I know Holly and Sam can be a bit intense sometimes. But they're not all bad. We just...we have our own way of having fun, you know?"
I raised an eyebrow. "What kind of fun?"
Zeph hesitated for a moment before speaking. "It's hard to explain. We just like to do things that are a little...different. Things that other people might not understand."
I couldn't help but feel a little intrigued. "Like what?"
Zeph smiled, seeming to relax a little. "Well, for example, we like to explore abandoned buildings. Or go on night hikes in the woods. Stuff like that."
I wasn't sure how to respond. On one hand, it sounded kind of exciting. On the other hand, it also sounded kind of dangerous.
Zeph must have sensed my hesitation because she quickly added, "But of course, we only do those things when it's safe. We're not stupid or anything."
I nodded, still not completely convinced. "I don't know, it just seems kind of risky."
Zeph shrugged. "It's not for everyone, I guess. But if you ever change your mind, you're always welcome to come along."
With that, our conversation ended, and we left the classroom. As I walked away, I couldn't help but think about what she had said. Maybe there was more to these girls than I had originally thought.
Oh how correct I was.

2023.06.05 00:29 CrudLord69 CrudLord's Collection Reduction: Microtech, Benchmade, Spyderco, Protech, TRM, and MORE!

I have acquired far too many knives and am trying to scale way back, everything includes tracked USPS shipping to all 50 states baby, only paypal F+F accepted, will ship Monday, know your local knife laws especially in regards to autos. Mostly looking to sell but trades are entertained. Hit me with an offer if you don't like my prices, worst I can say is no. Comment on post before messaging, those unable to comment will not be sold to or traded with.
Timestamp, pics, vids
Microtech Glykon Apocolyptic (A+): Brand spanking new, purchased direct from Microtech last week. Really cool auto with the nickel boron internals that creates better action than any OTF I've used. This thing rocks and I had to have one, unfortunately I have too many OTFs so this one goes. Paid $550 with shipping, get it brand new for
SV: $510 TV: $550
Benchmade Mediator (B+): Got this off the swap, in great condition with the only real wear being on the coating of the pocket clip. Super snappy out the side, slightly contoured handles, s90v blade steel, solid lock up, a safety switch that has zero rattle, and an overall slim and very carriable profile. My favorite out the side auto, and as such has been carried a little bit, the blade isn't dull by any means but its also not laser sharp either.
SV: $205 TV: $235
TRM Atom Green G-10 (A+): Brand new, never carried or used, simply opened and closed a number of times. Comes with everything from TRM except for the yorkie sticker. Solid washer action and lockup as expected and just a razor thin edge on this bad boy.
SV: $180 TV: $210
Benchmade Turret 980 (B): Purchased off the swap, taken apart by me to clean and lube with KPL. Ill say it, this is my favorite Benchmade I've held and I've held quite a lot of them. Has a larger overbuilt axis lock that creates for perfect free swinging action while also having rock solid lockup which is unfortunately not super common on Benchmades. A big ol blade of S30v with G-10 and stainless steel liners and a deep carry clip. This knife has been used and will show some wear, mostly on the pocket clip, and does not come with box but will be shipped securely.
SV: $135 TV: $160
Protech SBR S35vn Acidwashed (B): Catch and release from the swap, has scratches near the tip of the blade on both sides that are somewhat hidden by the acid wash but still noticeable. A couple small dings on the handle scales. Has classic super snappy Protech action with rock solid lockup. Knife appears to have been used a fair amount by previous owner and could use a sharpening.
SV: $135 TV: $160
Benchmade 3550SBT (A): Purchased off the swap, in excellent condition. No real wear besides a tiny mark in the coating on the spine of the blade and the pocket clip looks slightly used. Wicked snappy action with rock solid lockup, razor sharp edge. This is an older model that was replaced by the stimulus. Comes with original box and docs.
SV: $125 TV: $150
Benchmade Griptillian (C): This is the one that started it all for me and has been carried and used pretty extensively. 154CM steel, comes with blemished AWT scales and backspacer installed, however it will ship with the original scales as well. The action and lockup is fantastic on this one. A couple of not so great things: the AWT scales were purchased from them as blems and as such they have cosmetic flaws, mostly the two scales being slightly different shades or grey and the show side scale has a machining mark down the middle, with these scales installed the pivot doesn't sit flush into the scales, this could be a problem with the way I installed them but im not sure. The screws from AWT are also somewhat soft and are T6 and as such I stripped a body screw on the installation. This knife has also been sharpened by me on a work sharp. This knife has been used extensively and has some rust spotting around the axis lock housing on the inside. This is a user, with great action and lockup, and will continue to serve someone very well. No box on this one but will be shipped in a soft taco.
SV: $105 TV: $130
Kizer Cormorant S35vn/G10 (A+): Brand new in box, never cut or carried just flipped open a couple times. Great action with zero blade play and a cool fidgety knife.
SV: $75 TV: $95
Spyderco Dragonfly Pink FRN S30v blade (A): Great little knife in a cool colorway with a great upgrade in the steel department. Purchased off the swap, appears in like new condition with zero noticeable blemishes and solid action and lockup. Comes with box and papers.
SV: $75 TV: $95
Benchmade SOCP Partially Serrated (B): Cool fixed blade purchased off the swap. Factory sharp edge, however it does have some wear on the coating from the sheath.
SV: $70 TV: $90
Spyderco Centofante (B): Second owner on this discontinued back lock Spyderco. Does have small amounts of wear, mostly on the coating of the pocket clip. The smoothest back lock I've used, this thing flicks open and drops shut. There is a tiny bit of side to side and up and down blade play which isn't uncommon especially for back locks as they break in. Also the shiny Spyderco logo on the show side scale is snazzy as hell. Comes with box.
SV: $70 TV: $90
Budget Bundle- Kizer Begleiter 2 (A+) and Sencut Sachse (C+): Kizer is brand new in box, just opened a couple times, N690 and micarta with an insane action for a budget knife. Sencut has seen some use, coating is wearing off on the thumb studs, no really noticeable flaws but it has been used and would continue to make a great user. No box with the Sachse but will be packaged carefully.
SV: $70 TV: $90
Spyderco Salt Dragonfly (B): Little rust proof dragonfly with solid action and lockup. Purchased off the swap so unsure of its background but it appears in great shape with no noticeable flaws. Comes with box.
SV: $60 TV: $75
ADD ONS ONLY BELOW- MUST BE PURCHASED WITH SOMETHING FROM ABOVE-
Cold Steel Air Lite (C): Purchased from bladehq and was made a user for a bit. Solid tri-ad lockup that is surprisingly flickable on the open. Does not come with box, and again this was a user, coating on the pocket clip shows some wear, thumbstud coating shows some wear, a touch of rust in the stop pin that I'm sure could be easily cleaned off. Overall it is sharp and solid, and again would continue to be an excellent user.
SV: $35 TV: $50
SRM (A+): Dont remember the model on this one but its a cool little brand new SRM. Has a bottle opener and some sort of wrench hex thing in the side, idk I was kinda drunk when I bought it.
SV: $15 TV: $17

2023.06.05 00:27 7deadlycinderella [Star Trek] The Wrath of Berman: how 90's Trek succeeded in spite of one poisonous executive

CW: for discussion of sexual harassment and some Trek spoilers
Star Trek. Virtually every SciFi fan knows it, even if they haven’t seen it. The 60’s born franchise has had an immeasurable influence on both the genre of science fiction, and on fandom culture.
Never an enormous hit, the original series (TOS in future discussions) gathered a cult audience, who thanks to a historically significant letter-writing campaign, got the show renewed for enough seasons that it was able to be sold into syndication. Because of this, as well as the follow up animated series on Saturday mornings (TAS- despite the cheap animation, included most of the same actors from TAS as well as many of the same writers) the fandom slowly grew, reaching mainstream size in the early 80’s, leading to the theatrical movies being written and released.
Because of the film series success, in the late 80’s, Paramount green-lit a follow up series, Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), from original series creator Gene Roddenberry. The series was very popular among fans and earned several awards and nominations, as well as ramping up the careers of the cast, who while many were recognizable, were not yet household names (Patrick Stewart at the time was likely only considered a Shakespearean actor, and Levar Burton would be mostly recognized from Roots). This success led to multiple follow up Star Trek series overlapping through the 90’s- Star Trek Deep Space Nine (DS9), Voyager (VOY) and Enterprise (ENT) aired throughout the decade- each of the series on their own ran for seven seasons, except for Enterprise, which ran for four. 90’s Trek also had the unique attribute of a great deal of actors and crew working on it having been TOS fans in their early years. While TOS had the biggest pop culture impact of the franchise, 90’s Trek was when, along with the advent of the internet, the fandom really boomed exponentially. Most of Trek fandom now grew it’s roots in this decade. But all was not smooth sailing.
Even back in the 60’s, Trek had a tumultuous work environment behind the scenes (Not one but two actresses had affairs with series creator Roddenberry, Harlan Ellison once wrote an episode with the drama that doubtless brought to the table, etc), and this continued into the movie era, including Paramount kicking Roddenberry upstairs because of his work on the Motion Picture. Even among Trek fans, Roddenberry as a figure gives many fans mixed feelings. Some of his early edicts on Trek writing (such as no interpersonal conflict within the crew, as well as his edict of “no religion” because he was an atheist who felt humanity would grow out of religious belief, as well as strict adherence to “status quo is god”) have not aged well, as well as his impact on 90’s Trek (he hated Patrick Stewart and wanted him gone). Because of this, as well as Roddenberry’s increasing age and personal instability a Paramount executive was assigned to Trek to ensure all the usual executive and executive meddle-y things were followed: scripts were on time, directors didn’t go over budget, standards and practices were followed. This executive was Rick Berman, and throughout the decade, his actions would cause him to slowly, throughout the 00’s-10’s as more came out, making him arguably the most reviled figure in Trek fandom, entirely behind the scenes.
Early on, it was not due to untypical executive meddling. In the 90’s, TV was changing. Because of technology such as VCRs and early internet groups that encouraged tape-swapping, it was no longer completely necessary that every TV episode be solely self-contained, and many acclaimed series were playing with story arcs. However, this did not extend to Trek at first. TNG remained mostly episodic and multiple writers remarked that it was even difficult to allow the characters to change or display any development because of these restrictions (this is very apparent to modern viewers by such clunky arcs as the relationship between Riker and Troi). The famous Dominion War arc in DS9 that helped make it beloved by fans and quite influential in it’s own right, had to be fought endlessly to be allowed to continue with Berman and the execs by producer Ira Steven Behr, and the plans for a season-long VOY arc that eventually became the merely two-part Year From Hell, was vetoed by Berman not long after (a joke from a recent fan video includes the thesis that Berman was so busy ruining VOY and the TNG movies that he didn’t have enough time to ruin the end of DS9 too). This is all bog standard conservative executive stuff, but it managed to get worse.
One of the reasons TOS was so significant to 60’s audiences was because of it’s very ahead of it’s time treatment of cast diversity. While it wouldn’t be notable today, the original pilot featuring a woman as the Enterprise’s first officer and the rest of the series having both multiple female regular characters as well as multiple major characters of color was revolutionary.
This attitude of diversity did not continue into the 90’s Trek in regards to LGBTQIA+ characters. There were several episode written that dealt with issues metaphorically (one regarding an alien parasite as an AIDS metaphor, another with Wesley befriending a member of an alien species who could change sex at will), but 90% of these were vetoed out the door (the Outcast, one TNG episode that escaped this is terribly awkward to watch now- Jonathan Frakes flat out says that they should have had the courage to have Riker’s love interest in the episode played by a man). This extended to DS9 when the actors playing Garek and Dr Bashir, after several episodes laying on the HoYay extra thick because they interpreted their characters relationship as being romantic in nature (Robert Hewitt Wolf, a staff writer, has said recently on his Tumblr if the show were made now they would go for it), were told in no uncertain terms to cut it out, and the writers were instructed to stop giving them scenes together. Its easy just to dismiss this as “90’s network execs” in general, but multiple writers have recently put a name on it- this was 100% the work of Rick Berman, specifically.
An aside for the one episode of DS9 that escaped this, in which Jadzia Dax, played by Terry Farrell, encounters a former host’s (Dax is a species called a Trill symbiote- a sort of parasitic worm that moves from host to host, and hence has lived multiple full lives in different bodies) spouse and the two rekindle their feelings for each other despite their species taboo against continuing a previous host’s relationships with other hosted Trill. The fact that they are both currently hosted by women is never brought up. It featured only the sixth WLW kiss in US broadcast TV history, and in recent years, writers have confirmed Jadzia Dax as the franchise’s first pansexual character.
And Berman’s incredibly unprogressive influence continued past that, and at this point, it bled into the real world. There are multiple 90’s era stories of him being a bully to actors, such as preventing 14 year old Wil Wheaton from being able to take a movie role, and then cutting most of his role in the episode anyway, or being quite cruel to Denise Crosby on her last day of filming, but his misogyny came more and more to light as time went on.
Trek has a colored history with the actresses who work on it, spotted with stories like Grace Lee Whitney allegedly being let go from TOS after reporting a network exec who sexually assualted her, to Gates McFadden being basically fired from TNG season 2 because of a (Non-Berman) producer who disliked her rejecting his advances, before being coaxed back by Patrick Stewart for season 3 (As a fan, it wasn’t until DS9 that I felt like most of the female characters in the cast didn’t have “Girl” as one of their primary character traits). Terry Farrell’s exit from DS9, and her characters death as a result (writers have since written that they intended Jadzia to stay married to Worf and the pair to have children), was always reported to fans in the 90’s as being over contract negotiations, eventually revealed another side of Rick Berman’s influence on the franchise. Farrell has int he years since stated that Berman was absolutely vicious to her over the seasons regarding her figure, even making her get fitted for padded bras to make her more “voluptuous” for the character, as well as repeatedly making comments like “if you leave now, you’ll end up working at KMart”. Farrell, a former model, was not entirely unused to comments about her body, but she was appalled to hear them coming constantly from her boss, and also noting that the other Trek execs were never like this, and that the comments stopped when Berman was accompanied by another writer or exec. When her attempts to negotiate a contract that allowed her to drop down to guest star fell through, she left, something that must have been difficult, as like many involved in 90’s Trek, Farrell had been a fan since she was a little kid.
(Another aside- one could argue Farrell got the last laugh. Aside from being a well-liked character, she remained popular over the years at conventions, and in 2018 ended up marrying Leonard Nimoy’s son).
Farrell’s exit was one more incident among another in a long list of complaints regarding misogynistic treatment on set that has Berman’s fingerprints all over it, from Mariana Sirtis putting her foot down that she be allowed to wear a normal crew uniform on TNG instead of the one she had to wear a corset with, to Seven of Nine’s infamous catsuit on VOY to the much derided decontamination scenes in Enterprise (VOY and ENT have mostly been glossed over in this writeup- they could both have entire writeups of their own because of the amount of behind the scenes drama). Most of this came to an end when ENT ended, and while 90’s Trek has a great reputation among fans, the eventual consensus that has developed in later years is that it was in spite of Berman’s influence.
In later years, while Nu Trek (starting with Star Trek Discovery) has had more than it’s share of criticism from fans, most do seem relieved that Berman hasn’t returned and most of this criticism is in regards to writing/characters rather than the environment that the actors and writers found themselves in- this is best exemplified by several actors with negative experiences with Berman and others (including Gates McFadden, Robert Beltran and even Denise Crosby) being willing to make return appearances. Even Terry Farrell has commented that she’d love to play Jadzia again.

2023.06.05 00:10 Gareitz Can I mix bleach with detergent and wash it with 95 degree water? I want to wash some white towels and bed sheets.

1 Will the temperature damage the towels and bed sheets? the laundry mark says maximal 80 degree, but the washing machine doesn't have this option, they only have 40 or 95 degree.
2 I do this because the towels have bad oder after long time's use, not matter how I wash by 40 degree and dry them in a dryer. I know hot water will help. But if I use bleach, is it already enough to remove the odor? or do I still need a high temperature?
3 The towels get green/yellow, because of long term's use. How much bleach is it enough to remove the color?
4 Should I dilute the bleach first, or can I just add it directly to the detergent?
5 Does bleach kill becteria? or does it just remove color?
6 Is it okay til put some light green/ light blue cloth if I wash with bleach?
