Three years ago I asked a question on this sub: "How can I describe unique or interesting locations without derailing the flow of my session?"
The answers I received were good, but implementing them didn't entirely solve the problem. So, a now more experience DM, with a little less hair, and a ton more D&D monster books, I'd like to answer my own question based on things I've learned since then. One of the big things I found was instead of limiting what the players can see or interact with to keep my game moving, I could keep the game moving by letting my players interact and explore fantastic locations.
My first fix: Secrets & Clues
Key to applying Secrets & Clues to your game is that they have no in-world context or requirements. The players don't have to do anything to get the secret and/or clue - they don't have to do, say or investigate a specific thing to get the information they need. The DM is actively trying to give away this information, rather than withhold it, waiting for the players to do the right combination of actions. When I describe a fantastic location - the example from my original post was a small and pretty waterfall - I can add one of the 10 or so Secrets & Clues I wrote down before the session at that location! Adding secrets and clues rewards players for exploring, and means session time is never wasted.
Second fix: Focus on the players
This was inspired by three things: 1) re-reading the Jeff Smith Bone series; 2) skill challenges; 3) a post on this sub that talked about 'Player Check-ins' during travel (linked above). Smith inks the rain scenes so beautifully and miserably that you feel the cold water dripping down the back of your neck. I'd already used skill challenges before, and my players love them, so it felt right to reuse this in a less dangerous scenario. The idea of a Check-in was simple and turned the perspective back towards the players and what they want to do.
This is how I run the check-ins, but it is not a prescriptive model by any means:

1. In addition to random encounters, write up a list of small incidents that might occur over the course of the travel time. These are mostly to be used on days when there isn't a random encounter. E.g. a stone gets stuck in your shoe, and no matter how many times you fish it out it returns; rain pelts down all day; you get a song stuck in your head; you hear an other player humming the same song all day; the wind smells like smoke; a raven circles your party all day; you find a memento from home in a pocket; it's getting hot, and you're bored; insects buzz your head, midges get in your nose and eyes and carnivorous wasps
2. Ask each player a question, spread across the travel time. 1. Add a follow up question or two that makes sense with the incident. 'What' is generally appropriate, but asking 'where' and 'when' questions can add some depth. If there is a random encounter, you can ask the group similar questions after they resolve the encounter. (which forces me to make more interesting encounters. oh no!) With four players and one day of travel, I'd ask a question to one at breakfast, one mid morning, one mid afternoon and one after dinner. Or I'd try to lump them together, so after describing the incident, ask questions to two players. With four players going on a four day trip, I'd ask one question per player per day. E.g. "It's getting hot out, there isn't a cloud in the sky and the wind is low. What mood does it put you in? What does that look like? Other player(s), how does this affect you?"
3. Let the player make something up! They get a way to interact with the world, they get a little description of the location they're moving through, and they get some agency in that description. It could end up being a small moment, but could also grow into a scene.

Overall, the general advice that players don't care overmuch was useful, even though I didn't fully heed it. Most comments I took to say "don't worry too much about describing locations." Instead I dove deeper into them, and try to put more effort into making them narratively interesting, and consequently feel much happier with what I've come up with. I am grateful, nonetheless, to those who took time to comment on my original post. Hope youse all roll nat 20s!

I(M18) don't have any male best friends and I feel pretty lonely because of it.
For some context, I grew up with three older sisters. They're the best and I absolutely love them. My mom was always home, so I grew up around mostly women. When I was younger, all my friends were boys, but I always felt like I was the odd one out. I just never 100% fit in and I was never anybody's best friend. My mom was pretty strict, so whenever my friends invited me to a sleepover I always said no, before I even asked my parents and eventually they just stopped asking. We grew apart when we went to highschool, I haven't seen them much since.
So the first four years of highschool, my best friends were two other awkward boys. In retrospect, they also just didn't have any friends and we happened to be taking the same classes. In the fifth year I didn't have any classes together with them anymore, so again, I found myself without friends. The classes I would be taking would mostly be with girls, but I was kinda scared to talk to girls back then. (Disclaimer: I still am, but only on a romantical level.)
I went to art school, and I knew one guy from there pretty well that was also going to take the same classes. I started hanging out with his circle of friends too and got along with some of them, but the truth is, I was just that one guy who everyone found annoying and unfunny. I live away a 15 minute drive away from them, and I never got to go to parties with them or just hangout with them on a random Saturday evening. Eventually, the summer after our last year of highschool it started to dawn on me I was never their friend, and I never really had a clue before. They started acting very rude to me in the groupchat about plans we had made to go on a trip to Portugal. After that argument I decided not to go on the trip and they just kicked me out of the groupchat. Haven't heard from them once since then, and I'm deffinitely not going to reach out to them either.
Fast-forward to today, I only have female best friends. The studies I'm following now in college are female dominated, so much so that I happened to be the only guy this year, much like in highscool. Now I have a close group of female friends, who actually care about me and actually think I'm funny. I have never outed any attraction towards any of them, as most of them aren't single, not my type or I'm not their type. Besides that, I am still scared to talk to girls on a romantical level. I haven't even had my first kiss yet and I'm kinda embarassed about it. It just feels like I'm cockblocking myself at this point, because of how scared I am to make a move on a girl I am actually interested in.
Now on to the real point of this post. I just don't know how to be friends with guys. I have some guy friends from this scouting group I'm in but I wouldn't consider them my actual best friends, even though I have known them for 10+ years. Anytime they tell me something about "this one time me and the boys did this or that" with their friends, I just kinda miss that in my group of girl friends. At the same time tho, I feel like I have no idea how to function in a group of only guy friends. So I mostly stay quiet around them and never know what to say.
TLDR; I'm cockblocking myself by only having female friends

I’m at 35 weeks with di/di twins. My previous provider was expecting me having them around 36 weeks as he says that’s what he usually sees with twins and it just seems to be a magic number. I’m scheduled for a 38 week c-section as baby a is breech. Not sure if I’m going to make it.
I’m absolutely miserable. I have always had an incredibly high pain tolerance so I truly don’t know when to take things seriously. Hip and pelvic pain is horrible at this point. My entire lower body feels like shattered glass and moving is extremely hard. I feel like I need a walker, lol. I’ve gotten to where any physical activity at all starts period like cramps. They aren’t regular, but walking (even for short periods), getting a showegetting in and out of the tub, bending over, and even just standing up from a sitting position is causing the cramping. It lasts maybe 3-5 minutes and goes away until I do even the slightest physical activity again. Feet are swelling terrible but everything else that can come as a risk with that is fine.. hands have begun swelling slightly when I first wake up. My doctor told me it was basically due to carrying twins. One change I’ve noticed past 3 days or so is just extreme exhaustion. I cannot stay awake. They’ve not checked my cervix at all and I know it’s not always a huge indication of anything until you start dilating a bit more, but I know my mother was the same and didn’t know she was in labor either time due to just thinking it wasn’t painful enough and she cut it super close both times. I don’t want to end up in that situation with baby a being breech. I don’t have an appointment until Thursday but generally following the sit down, drink water rule kind of works after a few minutes, but as soon as I stand back up I’m hurting again but it doesn’t feel like it’s happening in a direct pattern or anything.
I feel so clueless as these are my second and third but I was induced and given an epidural way before I ever felt anything with my first and I have no clue what to expect.

Hey everybody!
New to this subreddit, transplant from bipolar — I'm a recovering alcoholic and drug addict that also has Psychotic Bipolar Disorder and ADHD comorbidly. While I've been diagnosed with Bipolar 1 for a while now, I finally sought treatment for Alcohol and Cocaine Use Disorders, and I'm about to hit six months clean!
I partially wanted to make this post just to brag — I don't really have like, anybody in my life that's sober and/or neurodivergent to commiserate and celebrate with, so now that my social energy is returning, I'm coming back to Reddit to find some digital socialization. But, I also want to be here as a source of encouragement for those earlier in their journey. This was my first try quitting, and getting to this point has been absolute hell in some regards and at certain points. But, I'll say that on the other side and a half year later, life is so much sweeter.

It started in my very early adulthood. At least, started to get noticeable. I'd always been a moody kid, and I was in conflict with peers and family very often. I was a closeted gay kid, and in a conservative, religious, Midwest context, I absolutely did not fit in. But, one thing got me through: my intellect. Since childhood, I've been incredibly intelligent and eloquent. My first words were full sentences, and started at less than a year old, as my mother's story goes. I could read full books by first grade, and was composing novel creative writing by ten years old. I've been a poet all along, and my creativity and brains have gotten me very very far. Yes, Catholic school was hell, but I was valedictorian and eventually went to an Ivy League college.
We drank quite a bit in Catholic school. On weekends at football games and parties, most my classmates and I would partake from about age sixteen. It wasn't necessarily problematic at that point for my lack of regular access. I could only drink when I had it from someone else. But, from the very moment my lips touched any alcohol other than the Blood of Christ, my life was redirected. I was so obsessed with drinking, and would do it to the most extreme and most frequent as possible. It made me ecstatic, even to just think about.

Once I got to college, things got bad. I got a fake ID, started going to much larger and better-stocked social functions, and also had a much more progressive and diverse crowd to socialize with. By spring of my freshman year I was meeting the clinical conditions for Alcohol Use Disorder. Obviously most of it was in secret. At points, I was even fermenting my own grape juice in my closet to get drunk alone in my dorm room. I've also been a major nicotine fiend since about sixteen, and engaged in that constantly too.
The summer after that freshman year, I returned home to my family where I spent the break cashiering. I couldn't get a decent internship, and accepted an only part-time and unpaid one with a local nonprofit. I also continued to drink in excess, a considerable amount for the age and time of my life. Probably the equivalent of a pint a night. I was just eighteen, and my parents one night found me drunk and vaping. They took the vape from me and referred me to my primary care provider for a mental health assessment. At the time, they thought my primary issue was the underage nicotine addiction. That PA suggested I find a therapist, and prescribed me a moderate dose of Wellbutrin, thinking it'd help the vaping and "mild" depression.
And it worked! For a while. The remainder of the summer and following early fall went fine. I continued to drink, but less problematically and miserably. I returned to school that September and found a therapist and psychiatrist through my school's clinic. Eventually, the depression and over-drinking began to creep in again though, and I again found myself begging a prescriber for help. He dxd me with Major Depression, switched me to Zoloft (a mere 25mg), and sent me on my way. As I left, he gave a small warning... patients that have Bipolar Disorder sometimes have an averse reaction to antidepressants... if you start to feel manic, give us a call.

Things got very bad very fast. I was already experiencing sleeping problems, and the insomnia that was exacerbated was intense. I was going days and days without sleeping — my record was five nights in a row of only microsleeps of 5 minutes or less throughout the days. I went literally crazy, clinically manic and increasingly psychotic. Eventually, I lost lucidity and became fully delusional. I thought the government was chasing me, that everything was a simulation, that I was on the run. I went to Urgent Care and explained my situation to the nurse. She dismissed me, calling it mere anxiety and sending me home to "go meditate."
Out into the night I went. It was a cold Thanksgiving night, the streets empty, everybody home with their families. I was alone at school, unable to afford a fight home for the holiday. I received a message from beyond, and embarked upon my mission. In the streets, I was running around and screaming, searching for clues wherever I could find them. The world seemed a puzzle to me, and it was my job to solve it. Eventually, I encountered campus police. They detained me and took me to campus Urgent Care, who eventually ambulanced me to the local psychiatric ER, who the next day admitted me to the local psychiatric hospital, where I spent a week.
The issue is, I was incredible at masking. The staff had little idea my internal thoughts and processes; I considered it a part of my mission to remain silent about the simulation. And, I was stoned when they picked me up. They observed me for a week, and discharged me without a diagnosis. School put me on an involuntary leave and I went home to start winter break early. Back there during my first follow up with a new local doctor, I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 Disorder, obviously having reacted to the SSRI. While the hospital insisted the episode was cannabis induced, I'm fairly certain that was for liability purposes, that hospital attached to the same campus clinic that misdiagnosed me in the first place.

The following years were hell. I spent months severely overmedicated, at one point gaining ninety pounds in just three months. I continued to sustain episodes, albeit more mild, being forevermore on a heavy antipsychotic routine. I lost most all my friends. COVID happened. I got into debt. I continued to drink more and more. I picked up cocaine. I sent my life into a spiral, all in secret. Because, upon my return to school, they had me on probation. If I was known to be drinking or using, they would put me back on leave. But, I hate the Midwest and couldn't go back, so I couldn't seek treatment.
I lived a secret alcoholic and cokehead for years. I got myself into severe debt from spending and gambling, I continued to get and lose jobs, and struggled to even get to class. But, on the surface, I was doing fine. In fact, pretty good — I even graduated Cum Laude. But, I hated my life. I was a mess and knew that my life was unsustainable. So at the end of my last semester Fall 2022 (I took one semester off during COVID for non-health reasons), I made the decision to seek treatment. I finished my last exam, packed up my dorm with one carry-on packed for rehab. My parents drove from Midwest to New England to pick me up, bring me home, and drop me at the hospital, where I spent a week.
I will be honest: the last six months have been hell at times. Of course the chemical withdrawal from years of drinking a fifth-a-day and snorting a gram-a-day are going to leave you exhausted. I spent months doing absolutely nothing. I slept and cried all day and stayed up ruminating all night. I continued to try adjusting my meds, another new doctor having taken me off any stimulant ADHD treatment (another diagnosis I picked up along the way) and leaving me debilitated. I couldn't get out of bed. I couldn't think. I couldn't write.

But... I think things are finally turning around. I tried AA but I didn't like it very much. My local chapter in the rural Midwest is, obviously, not a very friendly crowd to this flamboyant homosexual cokehead, so I didn't stay. But, I did keep one principle — a higher power. Mine is astrology. With the support of a finally-tolerable med routine and the commitment to something larger than myself, I'm finally starting to get over the initial sobriety hump, and it feels amazing.
I wake up every morning and feel truly grateful for once. I'm not hungover, I'm not throwing up and shitting my pants while I rush late to work or class. I'm getting up with the sunrise, before my alarm, and writing poetry again and slowly chipping away at my debt and repairing things with my parents and... staying sober. Next week I hit six months.
To anyone who wants to or has just started this journey, I'm holding space for you. Being neurodivergent is incredibly difficult at times. But, it can also be incredibly rewarding. You are worthy of good health, and I hope you're able to find and keep the support you deserve.

for context i m19 5’10 210 (currently) have bipolar disorder and have suffered from BED (binge eating disorder), bulimia and body dysmorphia for a long time something i went to treatment for and have since been on a journey of overcoming. In 2021 i got put on bipolar medication and one of the side effects of this medication or one of the realizations i got out of it was that i was a 235 lb 17 year old who didn’t know how to eat properly, didn’t take care of himself, and was constantly making himself sick in a vain attempt to cure what i thought the main problem was (my weight). I realized i needed to make a change.
In the months following that epiphany i had about my life i lost 50 lbs, with my lowest weight being 183 in october of 2021 down from my highest weight of 235 in april of that year.
The way i lost weight wasn’t the healthiest it was a lot of behaviors that i wouldn’t recommend and that i’m very lucky didn’t take as much of a toll on my health as they could have, such as stimulant and laxative abuse, going on eating disorder twitter and hoping that the people there would call me a fat f*** and give me the motivation i (thought i) needed to lose 50 lbs. This worked in the short term but was absolute hell for my self esteem.
At the end of the day i never reached my goal weight of 180 and instead of looking good i looked sickly and pale.

Not to give too much detail but i ended up having to go to a rehabilitation center for my eating disorder where they helped identify the reasons behind my purging and it helped but i gained back to around 205 (because it was winter and they didn’t let us do any physical activity or go outside at all, i can explain further in the comments) when i got out and i was- well not as devastated as i thought i’d be. But still, it did feel like a step backwards.
I ended up going to an outpatient program after and through just eating consistently breakfast lunch and dinner and walking a lot (cardio seems to be my thing) i went back down to 190.
I stayed at 190 for about 4 months until my doctor switched me off one of my medications and the binge purge cycle started to creep itself back up after a couple weeks. I was drinking a lot of milkshakes at this time. I went up to 215.
My doctor recently prescribed me a new medication about 2 weeks ago that has suppressed my appetite a lot and as a result of that plus consistent work in the gym this past 5 days i have lost 5 lbs.
I’ve included some pictures of me at various weights including now, pre “epiphany”, and the 2 ish years i flip flopped between the different weights.
I need advice, any advice, on how to cut back and gain muscle, maybe what look/build i should go for based off my stats and how i look.
I’m willing to be loseit’s personal project, i feel i have potential, but i also have no clue what i’m doing in the gym or with the food i eat, etc.
For reference of what i’d like to go for im really into 70s/60s bohemian or disco clothing and attire, but i also like the hippie or grunge aesthetics (ik they are very different) (well except for the dirt).
TLDR: I want to be loseit’s pet project or at least i want some advice that can help get me where i want to be. Any advice at all, gym wise or other wise is appreciated

Below, I am going to prove that Ganesha is originating from the non-Vedic, i.e. Dravidian beliefs:

Ganesha

Ganesha or Vinayaka is the famous Elephant-headed deity. His role is to remove obstacles and bestow knowledge. According to legend, Parvati made a boy out of clay to guard the entrance to her house while she bathed. Shiva arrived to meet Parvati but the boy tried to stop him. Shiva out of anger used his trident to cut the boy’s head off. To pacify a grieving Parvati, Shiva obtains an elephant head and attached it to the headless copse of the boy and bestowed upon him life. Later, Shiva made Ganesha the leader of the Ganas, thus giving him the title of Ganapati.
Now it is the Ganas of Shiva, of which Ganesha leads, that offers a huge clue to his origins. The Ganas are in fact a host of spirits, and much like them, Ganesha originated as a spirit rather than a typical deity. But we shall get into that later.

Ganapati

The name Ganapati is found in the Rig Veda, but no connections to the elephant headed deity is known. Rather the word means what it literally means: a leader of a troop. For example in Rig Veda 2.23.1:
“gaṇānāṃ tvā gaṇapatiṃ havāmahe kaviṃ kavīnām upamaśravastamam jyeṣṭharājam brahmaṇām brahmaṇas pata ā naḥ śṛṇvann ūtibhiḥ sīda sādanam”
“We invoke the Brahmaṇaspati, chief leader of the (heavenly) bands; a sage of sage; abounding beyond measure in (every kind of) food;best lord of prayer; hearing our invocations, come with your protections, and sit down in the chamber of sacrifice”
Similarly in Rig Veda 10. 112.9:
“ni ṣu sīda gaṇapate gaṇeṣu tvām āhur vipratamaṃ kavīnām na ṛte tvat kriyate kiṃ canāre mahām arkam maghavañ citram arca”
“Lord of the companies (of the Maruts), sit down among the companies (of the worshippers), they call you the most sage of sages; without you nothing is done in the distance; have in honour, Maghavan, our great and various adoration. of wealth, (the wishes of) your friends; make war (for us), you warrior endowed with real strength, give us a share in the undivided riches”
So it seems that we can’t try our luck with the word Ganapti at this early on. However, there is an older term for Ganesha that offers us a great amount of evidence: Vinayaka. Even today, in south India, Ganesha’s older name Vinayaka is more popular, at least in Andhra Pradesh.

Vinayakas

If one looks at the older Indian literature, they will notice that Vinayaka appears in the plural, referring to a class of spirits on par with Bhutas and Pretas. The earliest text to mention them is the Manava Grihya Sutra.
“Atha ataH vinAyakAn vyAkhyAsyAmaH shAlakuNTas ca kuSmaNDarAjaputras ca uSmitas ca devayajanas ca iti etair adhigatAnAm imAni bhavanti loSTam mRdgAti”(MGS 2.14.1-4)
“Now hence we will account the Vinayakas. Shalakunta, Kushmandarajaputra, Usmita, and devayajana thus. By these, they will become of the learned. Softly he recites”
The 11th chapter of the Yajnavalkya Smriti, a person under the influence of a Vinayak will have negative symptoms, namely depression and absent mindedness. The examples get specific: a prince will have no kingdom, a girl wont find a husband, women won’t have children, a student will not learn well, a merchant may not obtain profit.
The very first verse of the 11th chapter in fact states:
“Vinayaka has been appointed for the purpose of bringing about obstacles in the performance of sacred rites, and he has been put at the head of all the hosts of Devas (Gana) by Rudra and Brahma as well as (by Visnu)”(Verse 271)
Here we see 4 Vinayaka becoming one. Later on in an enumeration of Vinayakas names, we see Kushmanda and Rajaputra. Admittedly the single name kushmandarajaputra split into two, but nonetheless there is preservation of an older tradition.
The 11th Chapter oes on explaining how to worship the deity should one be under his influence.From this, we see the formation on the familiar motifs surrounding Ganesha. In the Ritual, there is the throwing earth into 4 pots of water, and the chanting of the various names of Vinayaka. However, verse 287 has something interesting:
“ Then having taken all the following things and bowing his head on the ground let him invoke Ambika, the mother of Vinayaka : — Husk and unhusked rice as well as cooked rice mixed with sesa- mum paste, fish, raw and cooked fish, so also raw and cooked flesh. ”( YS Verse 287)
First thing to note is that Vinayaka is the son of Ambika. Ambika is the precursor to Parvati and Durga. This is interesting as at this time period we are seeing the commonly known belief that Ganesha is the son of Parvati. Keep in mind that Ambika herself is a deity of Dravidian origin (PDr amma > Skt. amba> Skt. ambika). The other interesting thing to notice is meet offerings, including that of fish and raw meat. We will get to this later.
Vinayakas spirit connection is also understood from his mention along side the Grahas (not the planets) and Kartikeya.
“Having thus worshipped Vinayaka and the Grahas according to rule^ he obtains the fruit of all actions as well as gets the highest fortune. ” (Verse 293).
Similarly,
“ He who always offers Puja of the Aditya and makes tilaka of Swami Kartikeya and MahE Ganapati, obtains all success. ” (Verse 294).
The Grahas are a disease-causing class of spirits, of which one of them is Skanda. Later on we shall see that the god Kartikeya (Skanda) originated as Grahas and other forms of spirit worship. The association of Vinayaka with the Grahas and Skanda suggests two things.
The first is that Vinayaka is a spirit or supernatural entity. His prominence made him foremost of the spirits, i.e. Ganas.
The Bhagavatam 8.12.2 establishes the spirit like nature of the Ganas, of which Vinayaka leads.
“vṛṣam āruhya giriśaḥ sarva-bhūta-gaṇair vṛtaḥ saha devyā yayau draṣṭuṁ yatrāste madhusūdanaḥ”
“Having mounted the bull, the lord of the mountain (Shiva) surrounded by all the bands of spirits (sarvabhutaganair) went along with Devi to see where Mashusudana is”
The second is that we see the origin, at least in part, of the modern Hindu belief that Skanda and Ganesha are brothers.
The other motif interestingly seen is that Vinayka is offered Modakas (verse 289). Modakas are balls of rice, and modern Hindus will mention how Ganesha is fond of them.The mention of a white cloth being used in the ritual may be the origin for modern iconographic deptions of Ganesha with a white garment.

Non Vedic Origins

Besides the ritual being very earthly, the other interesting thing to note in the 293th Verse of the Yajnavalkya Smriti is the offering of Raw Meat and cooked fish. Vedic rituals do use meat, but those are offered in the fire. Here, no such thing is recorded.
In addition, the use of fish is a staunch prohibition in the Manusmriti
“He who eats the flesh of an animal, is called the ‘eater of its flesh’; he who eats fish is the ‘eater of all kinds of flesh’; hence one shall avoid fish” (5.15)
Admittedly, in the next verse Manu makes an exception to two kinds of fish: Rohita and Pathina.
“The ‘Pāṭhīna’ and the ‘Rohita’ are fit to be eaten when used as offerings to gods or Pitṛs; the ‘Rājīva’, the ‘Siṃhatuṇḍa’ and the ‘Saśalka,’ (one may eaṭ) on all occasions”(5.16).
However the fish are specific and are an occasion for festivities. These seem to not be used for appeasing spirits. Besides there is no specification of the fish to be offered to Vinayaka in the commentary of Vejnanevara. Besides, the mention of raw flesh is a huge indicator to the non Vedic origin of the Vinayaka worship. Verse 288 also mentions offering wine, to which the commentator explains to be of the Gaudi type, made from molasses. This wine, as it is made from molasses, is forbidden for brahmins.
Gaudi is not the same as Soma or Sura, the latter is made from grains and is not necessarily sinful for a Brahmana to drink (Manusmriti 11.90, commentary by Medhatithi and notes by Ganganath Jha).
Returning to the offering of raw meat and fish, scholar Kenneth G. Zysk in his “religious Healing in the Veda” records a nuanced set of rituals pertaining to healing and exorcism associated with the Rig and Atharva Vedas. Despite the nuanced list of rituals, not a single one of them involves meat offerings. Admittedly though, there is an instance where animal hide to make a pouch to store herbs. Beyond that, it seems that Vedic rituals pertaining to dealing with problematic spirits were vegetarian in nature. Thus, the presence of meat in the appeasement of Vinayaka suggests that the Vinayakas as a class of spirit are of non Vedic origin.

Dravidian and Tribal Parallels

Spirit worship is a feature in Dravidian folk customs and in tribal religion. In Kerala there is the festival of Theyyam where the spirit of a goddess enters a man, making him dance frantically. Tulu Nadu has Bhuta Kola, where gods and other spirits enter priestley men who also dance frantically. The Gonds, Santhals, Mundas, and other Central Indian tribes also believe that spirits dwell everywhere and influence the lives of living beings. They can be good or bad.
In Andhra Pradesh, scholar Wilber T. Elmore notes that when a person is sick and no remedies work, a Bhuta Vaidyudu (demon doctor) is called to do an exorcism ritual. In that ritual there are uses of muggus, blood offerings, and pot offerings with rice.
“The demon doctor makes three kinds of the sacred muggu, and after a bewildering number o f small ceremonies he makes an image of dough . He then forms nine small lamps o f dough and pours three kinds of oil into them. The lamps are lighted and placed on an offering o f food in front o f the image . A sheep is sacrificed, its blood caught in a broken pot and mixed with rice . This bloody rice is then sprinkled in the four corners of the room” (Emlore pg 53).
Later it is mentioned that:
“He then places the image of dough, one lamp, and the head of the sheep, in a pot, and the procession starts for the burying ground. Two men carry this pot and two others follow with the pot containing the bloody rice. After reaching the burying ground, they dig a hole and bury both pots with their contents, performing the usual burying ceremonies . After all is over another bloody nail is driven into the earth above the buried pots” (Elmore pg 54).
The ritual mentioned to have occurred in rural villages in Andhra Pradesh is more gruesome than the ones for the Vinayakas mentioned in the Yajnavalkya Smriti. Admittedly, this may be because the Brahamnical influence may have toned the ritual down. In any case we see an earthly folk ritual involving pots, rice, and raw meat. This is good evidence to suggest that the Vinayakas were a belief originating amongst the non Vedic cultures of India.

Origin of the Elephant Head

The solidification of Vinayaka having an elephant head occurred around the Gupta period; however what factors led to Ganesha having an elephant head in the first place.The interesting thing about the iconography of spirits in Ancient India was that depicting them with animal heads was not unusual. The Bharata Natyasashtra for example advises the costumes of spirits to have various animal heads.
“Bhūtas are known to be of various colours. They are dwarfs with odd faces and may have faces of boars, rams, buffaloes and deer as well” (Natyasashtra 23.98).
In Khmer Art, Yaksas are depicted with heads of various animals including the elephant. And on the Mathuran Frieze #2335, 5 yakshas accompanying Kubera are shown with elephant heads.
So the idea of Vinayaka having any animal head need not be questioned. However, what needs to be figured out is why the elephant is chosen out of all animals. Perhaps Vinayakas, back when there were more than one, may have had heads of other animals but this is speculation.
The most obvious answer to this question is that elephants in India were, and still are, a sign of high status and immense power. A kings wealth is measured by how many elephants he had. Elephants were used for war, construction, and ceremonial purposes. Such an animal that people looked to with awe should no doubt be the prime choice of selection when depicting Vinayaka. In simple terms, the majesty of elephants made the spirit having an elephant head popular.
Other sources of influence come from other figures in Hindu-Buddhist lore. One Vinayaka mentioned in the Manavagrihya sutra was Kusmandarajaputra. The name gets broken into two: Kushmanda and Rajaputra. The Kushmandas (or Kumbhandas) are a class of spirits in Buddhist lore. They are headed by Virudaka, who wears and elephant helmet. Virduaka guards the southern direction; interestingly, later Puranas mention Ganesha as the guardian of the South.
Another name invoked when one is possessed by a Vinayaka is “Virupaksa”. Virupaksha is also the name of the western Diggaja, a group of 8 elephants said to hold up the earth in each of the 8 directions. In Buddhist lore, Virupaksha is not an elephant but said to be lord of the Nagas. While Naga is taken usually to mean snakes, it could also refer to elephants. The relation of the names of the Vinayakas to existing elephantine figures could have partly motivated the success of the elephantine Vinayaka.
Other elephant cults may have popularized the elephant headed Ganesha as well. For example, Pilusara. Pilusara was an elephant deity worshiped in the mountains of Gandhara. Hieun Tsiang writes in the 34th chapter of his Buddhist Records of the Western World
“To the south-west of the town is Mount Pi-lo-sa-lo (Pīlusāra);[42] the mountain spirit takes the form of an elephant, hence the name. In old days, when Tathāgata was alive, the spirit, called Pīlusāra (siang-kien, i.e., elephant-fixed), asked the Lord of the World and 1200 Arhats (to partake of his hospitality). On the mountain crag is a great solid rock; here it was Tathāgata received the offerings of the spirit. Afterwards Aśoka-rāja erected on this same rock a stūpa about 100 feet in height. It is now called the stūpa of the Elephant-strength (Pīlusāra). They say that in this also is about a pint measure of the relics of Tathāgata”
Later, the Indo Greeks adopted Pilusara as their own deity, identifying him with Zeus. In addition, Greek records indicate there is a a record of the tribe Hastikas which may have been an elephant worshiping tribe. The existing elephant cults may have helped propel the formation of Ganesha the way we know him today, as well as popularizing him.

I've been following this course on Udemy where they create a Multiplayer RTS using Mirror in Unity.
I've been trying to get the cameras position to be set on the players base on starting the game. Right now I try to do that in OnServerSceneChanged in the RTSNetworkManager script. which derives from NetworkManager.
It always works for the host (Because its also the server I guess?) but never for the client.

My player prefab is setup like this:
I have a gameobject with a RTSPlayer and a MyCameraController script. Which both derive from NetworkBehaviour.
It has a child gameobject called camera with a CinemachineVirualCamera component on it.

When I check the inspector I see that the positions of both the camera child objects on the players have been set to the correct positions. However, only the actual camera of the host changed position to it's players base. the client's camera is still wherever in the scene.
When I try to set the position in update with a key press it works just fine. (See code all the way below.)

So in my RTSNetworkManager I do the following in the OnServerSceneChanged method:

I am absolutly lost, no clue as to why it's not working when I try to set the position from the RTSNetworkManager.
It's probably something simple which has been flying right over my head the entire week.

Last night an instagram account dm’d me just chatting. It was some international girl so obviously I wasn’t taking anything serious. I was telling them fake hobbies and stuff and at first I was honestly messing with them. I was sending our messages to my group chat because at first they were just small talk and I was saying weird hobbies and occupations as a joke. They asked to video chat and I added a friend as well because I thought it was funny.
However after that, once they started sending me sexual messages I just stopped thinking and kept texting them. They asked me download telegram to hop on a video call and reveal myself saying that they would do it in return. They did and then kept asking me to show my face along with my private parts. I tilted the camera up and so they saw my torso at least but I’m not sure if they got my face or not.
After this the another guy began texting me, presumably the girls colleague, saying that he was going to expose me and that I needed to pay him money. They had the accounts of everyone I follow on instagram and were sending me screenshots of messaging them. I freaked out, ended up telling my parents what I did, called local law enforcement and then I filed a report. I contacted those specific friends telling them that I am being extorted and that they shouldn’t respond to any messages. Somehow I was able to fall asleep after that.
Then this morning I found out that while I was asleep they created a fake account advertising that they would leak my “scandal”. Oblivious to the fact that I actually revealed myself, my friends messaged them and seemed to be messing with them not knowing that they actually had pictures of me. The scammers sent some picture of me to them which was really only the top half of my face, nothing else, so I don’t know if they even have my images or not, as I revealed myself on video call. However, it seemed like it was a screen recording, so they may have gotten me revealing myself along with my face but I really have no clue. My friends told them they would get arrested for scamming or something and then they blocked the account. Now it’s been around 12 hours since then and I’m much more calm but I’m still extremely ashamed of what I did and it feels like I will feel this way for a while. I feel like this incident has stained my reputation with myself and it’s hard to forgive myself as well. I just wanted to vent but if anybody has any advice for my that would be greatly appreciated. I was involved in a rear end vehicle accident about 6 months ago in Texas. The person hit me and I called the police to file a report. She was insured by some low cost carrier and was not licensed. I was not insured at the time (policy was over and I forgot to renew a week before). The police wrote a factually inaccurate report of my accounting, which I got resolved in court as well as my uninsured ticket because I got a new policy the day after. The other driver is now “legally” at fault.
Fast forward to today where I just reached out to follow up on the claim I filed on the other driver’s insurance and they have closed it due to the other driver not cooperating with their investigation. I’m at a loss here, while the damage to my vehicle is not structural or mechanical it is still owned by the bank, and a glance by the techs at the dealership put the cost of repairs over $3500 (newer German car). I have no clue where to go from here. My financial situation isn’t great at the moment so I cannot afford the full cost of repairs out of pocket. Would a lawyer even take a case like this? What steps would even have to happen? I reached out to around 4 today and they all said because I had no bodily injury that there would be nothing they could do. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!

TLDR; newbie player needs advice, can't make builds work, too dumb (?) to farm currency and make progress - waves of wanting to quit

As the title states, this is my first league of POE. I love it, spent plenty of money on tabs to be able to play comfortably and also support the devs - BUT
Either I'm too dumb, or I'm overwhelmed - (or both) - but at points I really feel like quitting and today was one of those moments again.At the moment I have roughly 600h including loads of AFK time, so I'm a baby still and I know that - my expectations aren't high, I just want to run T16s comfortably, with good movement speed or shield charge / whirling blade and NOT DIE every or every other map.When people recommend certain builds to me ingame and I only have a POB to look at, I have no clue how to follow it so that I can achieve the performance of said character in the POB.My biggest problem is that I jump from char to char (I have played 5 classes through the campaign and tried builds for each of them to find what playstyle suits me) so i spend most of the little currency I have on a build, finding out it doesn't work, and then having to sell of that gear or farm super low tier maps for some chaos scraps which isn't worth anything at this point of the league, sadly - so i feel like I haven't even touched the "real endgame" for farming currency, buying scarabs, sextants and all that good stuff to juice my maps.
So what am I asking for here?TBH, idk - probably some general tips for the newbie I am, some easy builds to put together for low currency to get the stone rolling that are FAIL SAFE, preferably with a written guide or at least some notes and different stages of skills & gear in a POB. Or just someone to tell me it's normal, next steps to take - at this point I will take anything to keep the fun up, because I really do want to enjoy and learn the game
Classes I've leveled up and builds I tried with them:

• Witch: First char. Started cold dot, didn't enjoy playstyle and died a lot, switched to occultist and tried death oath caustic arrow, again super squishy on my budget and dmg wasn't really there.
• Jugg: tried RF, was kind of nice but felt super slow to play and investments didn't feel like they changed anything
• Ranger: Probably the most fun I had. LA deadeye was superb damage and movespeed but I died a lot so I couldn't progress in levels at all. Kept gaining xp, dying and losing the xp right after- stuck in that loop. Also tried LS raider which I almost liked better because I love whirling blades.
• Champion: Corrupting Fever. Felt good tank wise, but slow as a b- and single target was horrible, also felt like it needed more investment to be "smooth"
• Trickster: My latest one. Frost Blades, in general prob also one of my favorite builds, but I hate having to get so up close (also whirling blades love here, again)

Long story short, my dad had lost his garage keys and thinks I had them last. I used them two weeks ago. He says that if I can’t find them, he’s going to charge me for replacing every key on the chain and hiring a locksmith to open the garage. Which will be about £200.
I swear I put them back where they’re normally kept. I’ve got no clue if he picked them up at all in the last two weeks but he refuses to accept that he might have used them in that time and misplaced them. He’s 100% convinced that it’s my fault and I’ve put them somewhere even though I literally have an exact routine I follow SPECIFICALLY so I know where the keys are when I leave them. He expects to remember exactly where I put them, even though it was two fucking weeks ago. £200 is almost a full months wages for me so I thinks it’s absurd to charge me for something WHICH MIGHT NOT EVEN BE MY FAULT IN THE FIRST PLACE

Hey fellow programmers! I'm an extreme introvert and got diagnosed with ADD 4 months ago. I'm not sure if the result of the diagnosis was right, there are days when I feel perfectly alright and can perform tasks normally. But on the other days, I live in fear. Fear that I won't understand/remember or zone out during meetings and won't be able to answer questions. And the fear is only around work. Meaning, I'm overly scared of meetings. Especially before the standup meeting, I sweat like crazy, have a frozen face and feel like something is stuck in my throat, heart rate goes to 100-130, have to use the restroom at least once, become fidgety and cannot sit properly on my chair.
I'm quiet, under-confident and have imposter syndrome. Just to give an example, I had to design a solution to handle multiple clients in a scenario. I had a discussion with a senior SDE on another team and had recorded that meeting as I know I won't follow everything and my plan was to go over the recording before the next day's standup. We initially thought of implementing the solution for only one client due to some complexities but by the end of the day, we figured out a solution. I did not go over the recording as I got extremely tired that day due to multiple in-person meetings. As a result, I was under-confident before the standup. I gave my update(without too much detail) and someone asked me if the solution will be implemented for all 3 clients. I said that the plan is to implement it only for one client! And my manager got irritated and ordered me to find a solution that works for all 3 clients. I literally have no clue why I even said that! Being an introvert, I know that I must utilize standups to show my work and progress so that I don't be judged as someone who doesn't know anything and hence doesn't speak up. I know that I am smarter than at least 2 people on the team but they have better communication skills and remain calm during meetings and I end up looking like the dumbest of the dumbest people on the planet. I started sounding dumb in any meeting I open my mouth and can sense that people are not interested in talking to me.
My standup updates are always 2 sentences. What I did yesterday and what I plan to do today. Others speak a lot more than I do. My manager pauses for close to 30 seconds after my update making it super awkward. I literally have no clue how to stop this fear, I also got pipped from a FAANG due to this fear and then landed at my current company. I don't want to consider medication and want to naturally act 'normal' like rest of the world. Please help me!

Hey, I've got Nextcloud running in a docker container on my QNAP, and part of the setup is setting up the system cron so that RSS feeds and the like get updated regularly. I SSHed into my QNAP server and set the following cron job:
*/5 * * * * docker exec -u www-data nextcloud-service-app-1 php /vawww/html/cron.php
This worked for a few months, but recently, this has stopped working. It's still in my cron file, but it just doesn't run. I know it's not something broken on the nextcloud side as if I run that docker command manually, it triggers the feed update just fine.
Any clue why QNAP might be no longer running my cron job?
