2023.04.29 13:12 Keen_NYC Initial license who they went to and where are they opening

In says this information was updated beginning of April so it should be pretty accurate
For most of the rest of the state, including the other four New York City boroughs and Long Island, the announcement was met with joy from the businesses and nonprofits that are receiving the licenses, as well as from companies and organizations who hope to get licenses in the next round of license granting.
Matthew Robinson was among the newly named licensees.
“I know it changes everything,” he said, after being named as one of the 36 who’d successfully gone through the months-long application process. “It doesn’t feel real … There’s just nothing that can explain it.”
Like all of the license recipients, Robinson had been arrested for marijuana-related incidents in the past when possession was illegal in New York. It had been until last year.
In 2005, Robinson was detained by police who were looking for someone who’d been in a fight nearby. He hadn’t been involved in the altercation, but he happened to have marijuana on him at the time.
“I got arrested and booked on a marijuana charge for a fight I had nothing to do with,” he said, but added that for him to now possess a cannabis sales license is recompense. “It’s definitely justice served … and it’s being served in a nice, warm dish right now.”
Robinson also owns a contracting business, called Bold Mold Eliminators. Because he’s a business owner, it put him in the running for a corporate cannabis sales license. He filed for it by creating a new, cannabis sales-specific business, called Essential Flowers.
Robinson is based in Albany, but he requested guidance for applying for a license in Manhattan from the Harlem-based Justüs Foundation. The foundation’s founder, Scheril Murray Powell, said that Robinson was one of 23 people she helped to apply for licenses. The nonprofit director said that she’s looking forward to some of the other people she’s worked with getting their licenses, as well, in subsequent rounds of license granting.

First Row Across
LGBTQIA List Book - Brennan, Sarah Lees - In Other Lands - 4½⭐
Protagonist Elliott can see a wall, and being somewhat of an outcast in our world is offered a chance to go to school in the other lands. Instead of becoming an over powered anime isekai (other world) main character Elliot carries his loser mentality to the other world, and over compensates by calling his classmates (human and otherwise) "losers" when they choose the warrior track, while he goes for the more studious track. Kudos for writing a realistic MC.
Weird Ecology - Jemisin, N.K. - The Obelisk Gate - 3½⭐
The second book of N.K. Jemisin's The Broken Earth Trilogy continues the "climate disaster" fantasy is set in a world where earthquakes are common and the ecology has changed to include more than a few new species. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first from a storytelling perspective, also Nassun is detestable.
Two or More Authors - Anderson, Kevin J - A Fantastic Holiday Season: The Gift of Stories - 3⭐
This anthology has 14 stories, most people will read it for Patricia Briggs' Unappreciated Gifts, the Asil story, the funniest and best in the collection.
Historical SFF - Gabaldon, Diana - The Fiery Cross - 2½⭐
This was long, with excruciating, excessive amounts of filler (pages of speculation on food supplies for breakfast). But at least the smut is good.
Set in Space - Chambers, Becky - The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet - 4½⭐
The first novel in Becky Chambers's Wayfarers Series, was such a fun read when I finished I added the rest of this series to the ever growing "To Be Read" pile. Imagine if the characters in The House in the Cerulean Sea decided to take a journey using the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy!
Second Row
Stand Alone - Klune, T.J. - The House In The Cerulean Sea - 5⭐
A case worker who doesn't "fit in" discovers a found family. Hard not to love this book.
Anti Hero - Collins, Suzanne - The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - 3½⭐
Story of the rise of Coriolanus Snow, who IMO is not nearly interesting, exciting or heroic enough to "carry" a book, unlike Katniss (who also has a better name).
Book Club - Gailey, Sarah - Magic for Liars - 3⭐
This magical school murder mystery was the Goodreads Book of the Month in May 2022. It was pretty average.
Cool Weapon - Eames, Nicholas - Bloody Rose - 4⭐
The sequel to Kings of the Wyld featuring Golden Gabe's Daughter Rose and her Band. Not as good as the first book.
Revolutions and Rebellion - Harrow, Alix E. - The Once and Future Witches- 5⭐
Rebellion is the main focus of the plot, much needed as in 1893 there are "no such thing as witches," women are relegated to being housewives or working in textile sweat shops and have basically no rights, not even the right to vote. Very topical as things like this still exist today.
Third Row
Name in the Title - Clark, Susanna - Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell - 4⭐
This well reviewed critically acclaimed book has won several awards so I was expecting greatness, but it suffers from being overly long so some people might lose patience with it and decide to watch the show instead.
Author uses Initials - Corey, James S.A. - Memory's Legion - 4½⭐
This has all The Expanse Series short stories excluding The Last Flight of the Cassandra, with authors notes at the end of each story providing additional insight. I loved most of them. The Sins Of Our Fathers - 5⭐, the final short story in The Expanse Series taking place after the events of Leviathan Falls answers not one, but two of the most asked questions in The Expanse fandom - what happened after to Filip, and what transpired after the gates closed? It is the best kind of closure, a great coda to the end of the series.
Published in 2022 - Baldree, Travis - Legends & Lattes - 5⭐
THE Cosy Fantasy book of the year, it blew up through great word of mouth! It was such a great, calming, enjoyable read that many people afterwards decided we really do want to read more cosy fantasy. I expect more books like this to be published.
Urban Fantasy - Slayton, David R. - White Trash Warlock - 4½⭐
Every now and then there's a fantasy book that takes familiar tropes in a new direction, and this impressive debut novel does that in spades. The title is eye catching, and then we are told the protagonist, Adam Binder, is a magical sensitive, who grew up as white trash, AND he's gay. Oooh! It's well written, the relationship feels "real" and I'll be reading the sequel for sure.
Set in Africa - Okorafor, Nnedi - Akata Warrior - 4⭐
After Sunny was inducted into the secret Leopard Society of magicians, she studies under mentor Sugar Cream. She struggles to unlock the secrets in Sugar Cream's Nsibidi book, which her mentor claims will never be a best seller because the language is so esoteric that most others, even magicians, will struggle to read it. Reading is hard, but magic is power, so don't quit, try harder! I liked how this truly felt like a coming of age, growing up novel.
Fourth Row
Non-Human Protagonist - Duane, Diane - The Book of Night With Moon - 3⭐
Wizard Cats!! 🧙🏻‍♂️🐈‍⬛ 'nuff said. They fight entropy and other wizard beings, maintaining a world gate beneath New York City's Grand Central Station. The cat language was a plus and a minus as some words weren't translated leaving us to try figure things out through context clues, failing in most instances. I wanted to rate this higher for the kitties but I just couldn't in all fairness. But reading this prompted me to put my kitties in costumes. They might still be plotting my death 🙀.
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey - Jacka, Benedict - Cursed (Alex Verus #2) - 4⭐
Alex Verus' ally Sonder is a Time Mage! His wizardry allows him to scan the past, and also slow down time, a tremendous advantage not just in combat but many other situations. Loved the first 2 books so much I binged the entire Alex Verus Series, which is thankfully, complete.
Five Short Stories - Butcher, Jim et. al. - Heroic Hearts - 4⭐
An entire anthology by popular urban fantasy authors featuring Butcher's Dresden Files, Anne Bishop's The Others, Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers, Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles, Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse and another Patricia Briggs Asil Dating Terrors story, which also happens to be the best story in this collection.
Mental Health - Muir, Tamsyn - Harrow The Ninth - 5⭐
The second book of Tamsyin Muir's The Locked Tomb Quadrilogy sees Harrow introduced to the other powerful denizens of The Emperor's First House, backstabbing ensues. There's humor, snark, more Lesbian Necromancers in space and an .... "Ice Loli." For reals. 😂 I can't even not give it 5⭐s after that.
Self Published, Indie Publisher - Dobson, Dave - Daros - 4½⭐
It only had 90 ratings on Goodreads when I read it, and should get more reviews and readers as it is an excellent high concept science fiction written in a light hearted manner. Alien invaders! A mysteroius artifact! There's also an interesting cast of characters including an AI that is a cross between the very logical Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation and the very depressed Marvin the Paranoid Android from The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy: A Trilogy in Five Parts.
Fifth Row
Award Finalist - Arden, Katherine - The Girl In The Tower - 4⭐
The second book in the Winternight Trilogy, a trio of Fantasy tales based on Russian Folklore, is a vast improvement over the first, the plot, storytelling and writing show the author's growth despite not garnering as many book award nominations.
BIPOC Author - Little Badger, Darcie - Elatsoe - 4⭐
Author Darcie Little Badger is Native American, an race indigenous to North America. This novel is an example of Indigenous Futurisms, a growing movement in the arts and literature in which Native writers create science fiction and fantasy with characters and themes drawn from indigenous cultures. It was basically made for this bingo square. Based in an Alternate America where there is magic, this story has some social justice issues in it, including how some political parties have designed health care to be wealth care.
Shape-Shifters - Hartman, Rachel - Seraphina - 3½⭐
My only gripe with this book is the writing in the prequel The Audition was so much better I was unconsciously hoping to see more of those characters portrayed that way in this book, but they were pale copies of the vibrant characters I had gotten a teeny tiny bit invested in.
No Ifs, Ands, or Buts - Mo Xiang Tong Xiu - Heaven Official's Blessing Vol 2 - 5⭐
Xie Lian's bosom buddy San Lang is revealed to be Hua Cheng, one of the 4 Calamities and a supreme ghost despised by all heavenly dieties. The description is so ... good, my inner monologue went something like "Oh my, he's hot. I'd hit that." The best part of this story so far is the background of tragedy surrounding Xie Lian is somewhat dispelled by Hua Cheng's actions in bringing the truth to light. Can't wait to read the rest.
Family Matters - Miller, Madeline - Circe - 5⭐
Feminist retelling from Circe's point of view, spanning four generations. I found this to be a very hard review to write because well, what can I say that hasn't already been said? Superb writing, feminism, a different lens, it's a great novel.

Reminder: This was an Unforgivable, Intentional, Brutal Torture & Killing of an Innocent Young Girl & it remains Unsolved to this day....! You might have forgotten, but we haven't.... JonBenét Ramsey & her family deserve better than this....
NICHOLAS WOLF -- NICK WOLF & WHY HIS D.N.A. MUST BE COLLECTED
(1) Nick Wolf was a Possible Suspect very early on in the Case....
(2) Nick was acting strange after the Murder, according to a report from the Nun at his Church on the Abbey....
(3) The Nun stated that they gave Nick a pair of Hitec Boots from the Donation Box....
(4) Nick has Never been Tested or Cleared using his DNA....

(7) On Dec 26, 1996, the day after the Murder, Nick took his Minnesota License Plates off of his Green Jeep & Spray Painted the Jeep Primer, in the Colorado Winter....
(8) Nick then put the Jeep inside of an Enclosed Car Trailer & Never drove it again.. He sold it a couple months later....
(9) Nick Skipped Town soon after the Murder....
(10) Nick is Ex-Military & Served in the Air Force 1961-1965....
(11) The Beaver Hairs recovered at the Crime Scene & on JonBenét's Body, can be Sourced back to Nick....
(12) Nick was Born & Raised in the St Boniface Catholic Church {sbcc} & Farmed in the abbey, together as one....
(13) Nick graduated High School in 1961 from the St. Boniface High School {sbhs}....
(14) Nick was in the Typing Club at the St. Boniface High School run by his teacher, Sister Cathel {sbtc}....
(15) In the 1940's, the United States Air Force Adopted the Motto "Victory By Valor"....
(16) Detective Lou Smit (RIP) & Private Investigator Ollie Gray (RIP) both had Nick high up on their Possible Suspect Lists that they left behind....
(17) Nick has been completely Off the Grid & Missing in Action since 1997....
(18) There has Never been a Missing Person's Report Filed for Nick....
(19) There is no Death Certificate on File for Nick....
(20) Nick is Openly Gay & Bisexual....
(21) It has been said that Nick lives in a small Unibomber type of Cabin in Minnesota, very close to the Canadian Border....
(22) Nick Wolf's very own daughter has expressed to authorities that she is positive that her father was responsible for the murder of JonBenét Ramsey....
CAST OF CHARACTERS The fact that just about everyone involved in the case, family members, friends, acquaintances, ex-employees & neighbors have all been cleared through DNA, must mean that it was someone the Ramsey's did not know.... A stranger murdered JonBenét....
WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING
Stranger on stranger crime.... Not sure where JonBenét caught Nick's eye, whether it be church, or a pageant, or parked on the Ramsey's street, but she became his obsession....
PACK OF WOLVES
Random Fact: In the Ramsey case there are many people with the last name Wolf, somehow connected to the case, however, none of them know each other & none are related.... There's Christian Wolf - Nicholas Wolf - Michael Wolf - & Denise Wolf.... Cleared Suspect Christian Wolf actually sued the Ramsey's for defamation of character for naming him in their book (Wolf vs. Ramsey)....
DECIPHERING THE NOTE
One thing nobody has ever done in the history of the Ramsey case is decipher the Ransom Note.... So not only must the DNA match the UM1, but the suspect & the ransom note must be connected too.... Not just some of the note, but the whole thing.... Not speculation on how & why, & no handwriting experts, but the actual substance of the ransom note & why it was written....
PRE-WRITTEN
Not only did Nick know she was dead when he left her in the wine cellar, but he still neatly placed the ransom note on the spiral staircase as he left.... He knew he was going to leave her there from the start, because he most likely didn't have a place to take her, & why would he take her, when he already got what he came for...?
GEOGRAPHICAL TIME SCALE FOR NICK WOLF
MINNESOTA - Birth 1943 to 1992 = 49 Years....
COLORADO -1993 to 1997 = 4 Years....
MINNESOTA -1997 to Current = 25 Years....📷📷
T I M E L I N E - N I C K W O L F
S.B.T.C
Nick Wolf was born into the St. Boniface Catholic Church (SBCC) & went to high school at St. Boniface High School (SBHS) & was also in the St. Boniface Typing Club (SBTC).... His entire life, including all of his family members were raised around the St. Boniface Catholic Church & the SB letters, all linked back to Minnesota....
THE STAGING
The staging of the Ramsey house was all done on purpose.... Nick didn't plan on taking her out of the house & he never intended to call & get the ransom money.... Complete diversion of his perversion.... He obviously had plenty of time alone in the house that evening waiting for the Ramsey's to get home.... The lengthy ransom note didn't seem rushed at all when it was written.... Quite the opposite....
THE RANSOM NOTE
When dealing with ransom notes in a kidnap for ransom, it's been said that they will portray themselves as the opposite of who they really are.... Nick's entire life has been encompassed around the Church, yet there is not one thing religious or spiritual written in the note.... He is disassociating himself from who is doing this & cleverly placing the blame elsewhere, even towards John & the family.... Not one cuss word was used in the entire note.... He can't disassociate himself from every aspect of himself, so using cuss words isn't in his comfort zone.... Despite the substance of the note, it was actually written in a nice tone....
MILITARY OVERTONES
Although the ransom note is filled with many evil things, it was not written in a mean tone.... For the most part, besides the military overtones throughout, the rest of the note can be attributed to many different ransom and/or vigilante type action movies from the 70's, 80's & 90's....
IT WAS NEVER A KIDNAP FOR RANSOM
If it was a real kidnap for ransom, & he was already able to grab her out of her bed & get her downstairs without waking anyone up, then why continue to the basement....? He could've gone out of any door he wanted.... The motive was completely sexual in nature.... Acting out on his sick fantasy & knowing he was going to kill her.... And he was gonna do everything he could to not get caught....
BIGGEST CLUE IN THE CASE
If JonBenét was dead before he left & after using gloves & leaving no fingerprints, & wiping the body down, why would he leave so much evidence behind such as a ransom note....? It's by far the biggest clue in the case.... Nick didn't have to leave the note, & if he already did, he could have grabbed the note as he was leaving, but he didn't.... He placed it neatly on the spiral staircase.... That diversion obviously had to be done, in order to buy some time & for the ruse to work.... All of the calamity surrounding the ransom note & the entire case was to cover up why it even happened: Self Gratification.... Nothing more, nothing less.... So far it has worked for over 26 years....
CLEVER BUT NOT ARTICULATE
Although the ransom note was extremely clever, it wasn't articulate.... A couple misspellings, speaking in 1st & 3rd person, & a couple run off sentences.... He knew of the Ramsey's, but didn't personally know the Ramsey's.... Most of the personal information found on the note, connected to John, could've easily been found snooping around the house & going through John's records.... And he might've known her name was JonBenét, but probably didn't know how to spell it....
OVERALL THEME OF THE NOTE
Some say the ransom note was vengeful, perhaps even an ex employee, but that was all part of the plan.... How many ways can you point your finger in a different direction, was by design & the overall theme of the note....
KEEP THE WOLVES AT BAY
The most brilliant thing he did with the ransom note was make it personal, even though him & the Ramsey's didn't even know each other.... And personal enough to blame John for what happened, by not following the rules, & that the killer was only doing his job.... The killer already knew John wouldn't be able to follow all the countless, detailed instructions on the note.... In reality, nothing was John's fault at all.... Him & his family woke up to a nightmare that forever changed their lives & countless people around the world....
THE SIGNATURE
When he decided on a signature for the ransom note, it was simple.... SB something, being that St. Boniface was his upbringing in Minnesota, so nobody would make the connection all the way in Colorado.... Perhaps he underestimated how big the case would become.... Big enough that someone finally connected the dots 26 years later....
TRIGGERING EVENT
It's textbook.... JonBenet's killer likely had a similar event prior to the murder.... Divorce.... Termination.... Break-up.... Family Trouble.... Something made him finally act out on his fantasy....
THE ONE & ONLY REASON
While writing this fantasy out on paper & in his mind, he seemed to have fun with it.... He wrote it before the murder & the one & only thing on his mind, was sexually deviant in nature.... It's the only reason he broke into the Ramsey home.... It's the only reason he patiently waited for the parents to fall asleep.... It's the only reason he abducted her out of her bed.... It's the only reason there was a girl found murdered in her own house.... It's the only reason he left the ransom note.... A diversion for his perversion...
REAL MOTIVE: SELF GRATIFICATION
It wasn't about money, it wasn't a friend, it wasn't an enemy, it wasn't about revenge, it wasn't about jealousy or envy, or someone disgruntled from work, it wasn't a pedophile older brother, or a mom that got mad, or a little brother throwing a fit with a maglite.... It was a sick & very twisted grown man that acted out on his pedophilic impulses.... It's pretty sad to think that an innocent 6 year old girl was tortured & strangled, sodomized & murdered & with all of the calamity that followed, for an urge & 15 seconds of self pleasure.... Sociopathic, psychopath, narcissistic, pedophile...
THE UNMENTIONED
If you noticed, a lot of things were never even mentioned in these findings, being that they weren't necessarily needed while trying to solve the case.... Please note: They are all still very important, but a lot of them become more of a distraction from analyzing the most important evidence & facts in the case.... The Unmentioned: The Bowl of Pineapple, Beauty Pageants, the Stun Gun, Secret Santa, Point of Entry, the Flashlight, Duct Tape, the Grand Jury, the 911 Call, Access Graphics or John's Bonus Check, the Paintbrush, Burkes Swiss Army Knife, Footprints in the Snow, Contents of JonBenét's Stomach, the Basement Window, the Blue Suitcase, Bedwetting, the Wine Cellar, the Garrotte, Barbie Dolls, or Handwriting Experts.... And most importantly, it was Solved without having to use the UM1 Foreign Male DNA that was Collected from the Crime Scene & Entered Into CODIS.... Just good ole detective work & some late night sleuthing, that's all.... The UM1 will match Nick Wolf....
NICK WOLF'S CURRENT WHEREABOUTS :1106 22nd Ave NW Baudette, Minnesota 56623

In support of the philosophers Divya Dwivedi and Shaj Mohan
Divya Dwivedi and Shaj Mohan are among the most important philosophers in the world alive today. Dwivedi and Mohan have developed their thought beyond the “western” concept of philosophy within a community of friendship with Jean-Luc Nancy, Bernard Stiegler, Achille Mbembe, and Barbara Cassin. Their project with Jean-Luc Nancy is to find a new beginning for philosophy beyond the geo-politicised and “racialised” histories of philosophy while acknowledging the insights of the deconstruction of philosophy undertaken by Heidegger and Derrida. Their research contributions are valuable not just to the discipline of philosophy, but also sciences and politics.
Their extraordinary commitment to justice, equality, and the political freedoms of people everywhere in the world comes at a serious price. In India, where they reside, they face harassments and death threats on social media on a regular basis. These threats are significant. In recent years, while foreign intellectuals have been denied entry in India, Indian intellectuals have been jailed or assassinated. Last year it was reported in Le Monde that Dwivedi and Mohan faced threats to decapitate them from the Hindu far right in India, and on that occasion Nancy wrote in the Liberation supporting them and condemning their situation. The research contributions of Dwivedi and Mohan on the caste oppression in India—which they called the oldest form of racism and apartheid—is at the root of the animosity of the Hindu far right in India towards them.
As Dwivedi and Mohan have demonstrated several times caste oppression is often masked as Hindu majoritarianism. While there is widespread awareness about the oppression of religious minorities in India, the world is yet to catch up with the realities of caste oppression. They have also shown that, in India, postcolonial theory and the decolonial project are both aimed at restoring the upper caste supremacist idea of India. Their renowned work on M. K. Gandhi, “Gandhi and Philosophy: On Theological Anti-politics” appeared with a foreword by Jean-Luc Nancy. In this complex work they argue that Gandhi’s contributions towards creating the postcolonial and decolonial projects should be understood to combat new forms of racisms and political tendencies.
We express solidarity with the philosophers Divya Dwivedi and Shaj Mohan. We are deeply concerned about the harassments, the highly stressful atmosphere of intimidation, and threats to life faced by Dwivedi and Mohan.

2023.01.22 05:55 Healiosart Hell's Kitchen: Battle for Redemption Cast

Here's a cast I put together if they wanted to do an All-Star themed season. I made this cast extremely oddball, I threw in some early outs, fan favorites, old-school, new-school, remembered, forgotten, and even those that were hated by the fandom, or loved by fans but the weakest chef on their original season. Who would you cast for this type of season? (Disclaimer: I used Survivor Brantsteele to create this cast as Brantsteele currently doesn't have a Hell's Kitchen simulator sadly).

2023.01.15 19:07 catfishburglar Update - Fantasy book club weighted rankings for books 1-50

Hello fantasy! I had previously posted a weighted ranking list for books 1-25 read by a book club that my friends and I run in which we exclusively read fantasy/sci-fi. The old post can be found here [https://www.reddit.com/Fantasy/comments/idw12p/our_book_club_just_hit_25_books_all_fantasy_o]
It has taken us much much longer than expected (added a member, kids, life, etc made scheduling hard) but we just hit our 50 book milestone. Below are the weighted rankings of all 50 books we have read as a group.
As a reminder, we cannot pick a book that anyone has, at any point, previously read. That’s why you’ll notice a lot of the oft-recommended titles missing from the list. We are all fairly avid independent readers so most of the big name stuff has been picked off long ago. In addition, these rankings are entirely based on how much we personally like the books, not their perceived quality. I have amended some of the comments from before if I felt there was relevant info.
I’ll reiterate the previous disclaimer that many of you will find yourselves disagreeing with this list. You should know that you are wrong and you should feel bad.
We mean no disrespect to authors for some of the negative reviews and more than likely we aren’t the intended audience for those books.
Finally, the formatting might be weird. I tried my best to make it readable so apologies if it's not.
Bolded books are new additions:
  1. Call of the Bone Ships - R.J. Barker
The anxiously awaited second book in R.J. Barker’s phenomenal Tide Child trilogy. This book is simply amazing. I’ve got my 62 year old mom hooked on fantasy and this is her favorite series. She convinced my dad to name their boat Tide Child. Enough said.
  2. A Brightness Long Ago - Guy Gavriel Kay
Just a beautiful book with well-written characters and an engaging plot. 10/10 would recommend this to anyone. Low-fantasy.
  3. Children of Time - Adrian Tchaikovsky
Amazing writing, extremely unique concept, great pacing, big-ass spiders. We are all surprised that this book is this highly ranked but it clearly made an impression on us.
  4. Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
An obvious modern classic often used as a fantasy gateway drug. I am surprised but pleased it has had such strong staying power on the power rankings.
  5. Traitor's Blade - Sebastien de Castell
Despite heavy influence from The Three Musketeers, this book came across as very fresh. Part buddy comedy, part political mystery, part coming-of-age, a big bro/little sis arc, and amazing sword fights. Genuinely amazing characters and an excellent plot twist.
  6. The Bone Ships - R.J. Barker
Beautiful novel concept, amazing writing with excellent imagery, engaging characters, and dragon-whales. We all found this book to be a blast. And yes, we are still big sea shanty fans.
  7. The True Bastards - Jonathan French
Book 2 of our group-defining series. The True Bastards was definitely an improvement on Book 1 in terms of writing quality. I think in hindsight it was a lot less “fun” and as you’ll see below, we severely underrated book 1 over the years.
  8. The Black Tongue Thief - Christopher Buehlman
Crude, witty, and irreverent, this book was an absolute blast. Some of the best worldbuilding we have read combined with an engaging plot - I can’t recommend this book enough.
  9. A Cavern of Black Ice - Julia Victoria Jones
Just a great book overall. Cool worldbuilding, interesting and diverse characters, and an easy read. One of those books that I would recommend to someone newer to the genre and has gone through the standard Sanderson, Rothfuss, and Lynch recommendations and wants some diversity.
  10. Cold Iron - Miles Cameron
A few of us are suckers for the over-used academy and training montage trope. This checks both of those boxes. A bit Marty Stuish but has a fun plot.
  11. Age of Assassins - R.J. Barker
RJ Barker’s first series was an obvious pick for us given our love of The Tide Child trilogy. You can definitely tell that this is their first major book, however, it ended up being a very creative spin on an assassin tale. A club-footed assassin with mommy issues ends up at the center of a significant political thriller. Great action, great characters, gritty, and touching. I finished the trilogy the following week.
  12. Gideon the Ninth - Tamsyn Muir
The biggest underdog based on the Amazon blurb…this book is simply amazing. It seems to be getting a lot of praise on this subreddit which it greatly deserves. Biggest barrier for people seems to be the modern colloquial language in a bizarre setting but we liked it.
  13. Free Bastards - Jonathan French
The final installment in the main Lot Lands trilogy was our 50th book. This series was started on a whim as we figured “hog riding, vulgar, overly sexual orcs battling across a broken land” would be fun to talk about. It was. What we didn’t expect was an extremely well-crafted trilogy with well-done action, moments of sincere interaction, and a highly satisfying conclusion.
  14. Dark Forge - Miles Cameron
A contentious ranking amongst our group. Very hot or cold for our members. I found it great but others found it pretty weak overall. Worth a read regardless as it has an interesting plot. Sequel to Cold Iron so if you like that one definitely give this one a go.
  15. Blood of the Exile - Brian Naslund
A cast-out dragon slayer is begrudgingly drawn back into the fold by a petulant king for a chance at redemption. I think we overall would recommend this book but it’s one of those books where the author has a clear idea of the rest of the trilogy and thus leaves things completely unaddressed as they will be covered later. This can harm the experience of reading an individual book in a trilogy in our experience.
  16. A Little Hatred - Joe Abercrombie
A very Joe Abercombie book… For those Abercrombie fans you’ll recognize some surnames and characters that span the universe. Great action scenes as always but I think we felt the “political” portion of the plot was a little weak. Read his other main series first and if you like them, definitely read this along with his other works. The man is incredibly consistent.
  17. Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City - K.J. Parker
Wry in tone, the protagonist’s voice makes this a very fun read. If you don’t like first person perspective then opt out of this one. Overall this was a pretty interesting plot and if you are an engineer you will feel heard.
  18. The Gutter Prayer - Gareth Hanrahan
The trio of unlikely friends and their interactions were the strong suit. The world building was crazy and unique and the ending was completely unpredictable.
  19. Best Served Cold - Joe Abercrombie
Again, feels distinctly like an Abercrombie book. It’s not my favorite of his but I wouldn’t hesitate to read it again. Some interesting plot twists and a little dash of that good old fashioned grimdark for when you want to feel a bit queasy when reading.
  20. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - Becky Chambers
This ranking belies how much we all liked this book. A quaint slice-of-life novel with a VERY diverse cast. WE all went into it skeptical and came out feeling warm and fuzzy and wanting some more.
  21. Hail Mary - Andy Weir
If you had me read this book without any knowledge of who had written it, I would immediately guess Andy Weir. His voice is so consistent with the writing in The Martian. We all thought this was a bit weaker than The Martian but still pretty fun overall. Space, engineering, desperation, wit, now with Aliens! Worth a read if you like the Martian.
  22. The Last Wish - Andrzej Sapkowski
I’ll be honest, I think if we read this again it wouldn’t rank nearly this high. Not actually that great of a literary work IMO but it is foundational to a lot of mainstream fantasy at this point and, as such, is worth the read.
  23. Baru Cormorant - Seth Dickinson
Political mystery thriller with some very interesting world-building. We liked-not-loved
  24. The Pariah - Anthony Ryan
Like a literary meth addict, I’ll always be chasing that Blood Song high with Ryan it seems. This is a stark improvement over the rest of the Raven’s Shadow series but falls short of Blood Song quite a bit in my opinion. The front half of the book was incredibly fun to read and really sucks you in.
  25. The Ember Blade - Chris Wooding
Good book. The author tries to strike a weird balance between the main character, his friend, and their begrudging rescuementor that just didn’t really do it for us. Still a fun read and not at all painful but just not a complete package in our opinion.
  26. Guns of the Dawn - Adrian Tchaikovsky
With how high Tchaikovsky is ranked previously on our list we thought this would be a banger. Flintlock low-fantasy with a slow-burn plot. Kind of like a fantasy civil war book with major Pride and Prejudice vibes. Not my favorite but the prose was undeniably good. Probably ranked a bit too high all things considered.
  27. The Rage Of Dragons - Evan Winter
Fun book, great world, just not the blockbuster that some of the others above are. Still worth the read and it has amazing pacing. We could all do with some more African-set books though that was really well done and fun to read.
  28. Kings of the Wyld - Nicholas Eames
Another contentiously-rated book. It has a very interesting tone in that it is light and satirical with some very heavy moments.
  29. Brother Red - Andrian Selby
Meh. Weird but not terrible plot, strange names, slow pacing. It was creative but just extremely difficult to read.
  30. Gray Bastards - Jonathan French
Absolutely criminally underrated by us all when we read it as book #2 of our book club. This book is super fun, crude, disgusting, violent, and creative. But having read the rest of the series it was necessary and well-executed.
  31. The Black Coast - Mike Brooks
Probably the weakest execution of “dragons” I have ever read. The political intrigue part of the book was OK but the action/dragons were super lame. I’d give this one a pass.
  32. The Atlas Six - Alexene Farol Follmuth
The worst first 50 pages of a book I have ever read. Character interactions are not at all realistic despite being set in a human world. Like this was a 10x false start for many of us and we only powered through for the book club. I ended up liking the rest of it but most of our members did not. Teen X-men academy vibes (even though they are allegedly adults).
  33. The Left Hand of God - Edward Dmytryk
Very unique setting (semi-gothic religious cult world) and tone. Plot kinda flies all over the place leading to low ranking but I think it’s definitely worth a read.
  34. Finder - Suzanne Palmer
Interesting plot, easy read, but we all found the imagery tough to grasp due to the writing style.
  35. The Frozen Crown - Greta Kelly
Like, if you are granted incredible magic, just use that shit. I recall weird evil stepdaddy vibes and cold stone castles but that’s kind of it.
  36. Priest of Bones - Peter McLean
Meh, we didn’t feel this brought anything that other books haven’t brought already. A passable fantasy book. I might buy this in a Hudson News and read it on an airplane if I forgot my Kindle.
  37. A Shadow in Summer - Daniel Abraham
If you are into weird magic poets being pivotal to maintaining a consistent supply of grain then this book is for you. If you are into mature characters, then it’s not.
  38. Burden's Edge - Sever Bronny
It’s not often that magic academy trope books fall flat for us, but this one kinda did. I actually don’t normally hate Marty Stu’s but this one was a major detractor. I think if we were 16 we would really like this book but we are all old and fat and jaded and thus it was just OK.
  39. Son of the Storm - Suyi Davies Okungbowa
I really wanted to like this book more but the writing failed the underlying plot I think. Also, the antagonist is one of the more insufferable characters I have read. Not the kind that you love to hate but the kind that is just annoying. Unique plot, magic elements, etc but just not super well executed.
  40. An Ember in the Ashes - Sabaa Tahir
Pretty crazy to have both a Mary Sue and a Marty Stu in the same book. Writing felt a bit too YA-ish for the plot.
  41. Nueromancer - William Gibson
Half of our group aren’t huge into Sci-Fi and this book showed it. Similar to Finder, we had a hard time with imagery. Noir-space tones which was cool though. Also one of the weirder sex scenes I have ever read.
  42. A Memory Called Empire - Arkady Martine
I actually had this ranked way higher but the group did not. Unique plot with galactic ambassadors, neat brain-implant technology, and a consistent tone, it was just too far out there to be ranked higher. Especially the names. Weird names can be helpful for worldbuilding but if I have to spend 30 seconds sounding out words every time I read the name of a new place then it’s exhausting to read.
  43. Three Parts Dead - Max Gladstone
This is the book that led to an embargo on Max Gladstone. You can’t fault the man for his creativity but chain smoking monks, invisible gargoyles, and the most strange execution of vampires along with an inane plot lead to a flop for us.
  44. The Traitor God - Cameron Johnston
Somewhere in the depths of this soup of words is a very good story. If the author has applied the same skill he used in describing street food to the plot, it would have been great. Ok that's way to harsh it really wasn't that bad but I wanted to sound like a literary critic. Also weak fight scenes which is a big bummer for us.
  45. Empress of Forever - Max Gladstone
Fairly poorly-writeen sci-fi with a forgettable plot. Wasn’t hard to read at all but wasn’t our particular cup of tea.
  46. The Thief - Megan Whalen Turner
OK this is declared as a young adult book but honestly it seemed even more immature than that. The twists were predictable, the payoff was a bit lackluster, and the plot too contrived for us. The one redeeming quality was the main character and his moments of charm.
  47. The Girl and the Stars - Mark Lawrence
Public reception for this book has been very high so maybe we all just suck. We are all fans of Lawrence’s other works, but the YA tone was very heavy handed (felt like the Divergent sequel movies in tone) wasn’t relatable for us. Your mileage may vary.
  48. Foundryside - Robert Jackson Bennett
OK I spite-ranked this low because I really thought this would be a banger and it wasn’t. However, we all felt a distinct lack of originality in the plot and magic system. This book introduces nothing new to the genre.
  49. The Unspoken Name - A.K. Larkwood
“She was tentative in a way that suggested maybe she hadn’t kissed a girl with tusks before.” This book flopped hard for us. Also has, EASILY, the worst map of any book I have ever seen.
  50. There Will Be Dragons - John Ringo
If you are into right-wing wish-fullfilment fantasy with shades of pedophilia, the idea that being a civil war reenactment enthusiast will prepare you to face a near omniscient AI being, and a zealous re-imagining of the 2nd Ammendment of the US Constitution, then this book is for you. Political differences aside, this is the single worst book that any of us have read. This is what happens when it’s your pick and you don’t come to book club prepared and you pull the first item on the list from a poorly-structured, hasty Google search with the word "dragon" in it.
