TL;DR Glukhovski's novel feels more like an episodic TV show script. With every episode involving a new character who will ultimately either die or disappear and a near-death situation that Artyom will ultimately be saved from.
Let me start by saying I love Metro. I've played all of the games many, many times over. Still have my 360 copies of 2033 and LL, Xbone redux and pc redux and Exodus on both xbone and pc.
I also love reading and have read Roadside Picnic just before 2033 and I loved it. I'm also a big fan of Stalker but at this point I think I can firmly say that I love everything about this genre of Eastern European dystopia.
But after finishing 2033 and chewing on it for about a day, I can say I honestly prefer the game. 2033 isn't bad, but it's strange when a game takes more time to establish characters and make stations of the metro feel like actual places rather than sets for things to happen at. Glukhovski has a wonderful vision for the Moscow surface, his descriptions of the wasteland, the various mutants and the Kremlin were all top notch. But the story itself really just didn't grasp me.
Characters are introduced really just to die or disappear. Burbon, check. Khan, check. Mikhail, check. The missionary, check. Daniel, check. Melnik sticks around which is good but even he dips out for the finale which is shared with Pavel, a new character and Ulman who has only been with us for a little bit at this point. Compared to their game counterparts, every character is massively improved with distinct personality that I can't really separate from the book versions.
Not to mention after the halfway point Artyom is found facing off against certain death, only to be saved last minute several times. The Tunnel with Burbon, the Reich, The surface twice, the cultists, and kind of in Metro 2 against the gelatinous creature. By the time Artyom was being dragged off by the cultists I was like "okay who's gonna barge in and save the day this time?"
Glukhovski explains all of this by talking about fate and the influence of the metro. That people come and go and live and die unceremoniously. Or that perhaps the dark ones themselves were influencing the metro to save Artyom each time. Either way it doesn't really excuse that both are really tired tropes of storytelling. Even if they're explained it doesn't make it more satisfying to me.
If anything I think it makes the games, especially 2033, much more impressive. Just how much was done with the source material to expand on it and make something really incredible with amazing atmosphere and environmental storytelling. While I respect the novel I really think 4A refined and polished it into a clean experience that no other game could emulate.
The ending though, much better than the games. And the description of strange mutants as well as the watchmen was superb. While I'm glad I read it I don't think I'm going to continue with 2034.
By all means, feel free to disagree. I think there's a lot to love about the novel and not everything in the game is a good change. But what does everyone else think?

In recent months, I've noticed significantly less activity on this sub, which makes sense. This trend will most likely continue until we get some info on Season 2 (not very soon). So, to lift some spirits, how about we discussed some plot elements for Season 2? I'm thinking villains. Or antagonists because that fits better with the morally grey themes of Arcane.

Jinx
Jinx seems like the most obvious choice when it comes to the big bad of the next season. We know she comes back from the teaser alone and the show ended with her embracing the new identity and title life and the people in her life gave her. While she will most likely be a chaotic, antagonistic force in S2, it's hard to say if they'll stick with her for the entire season. While S2's continuation of the Sisters storyline can be about Vi coming to terms with the fact that her sister is gone, it can also be a story about forgiveness and healing. I'm not suggesting that they will give her a last minute redemption (Arcane's writers are more capable than that), but that they will most likely continue one of the show's main themes: bonds of love and why they aren't easily broken. I would also bring up what one of the writers said in the qna: "To me the story of Arcane is about whether or not the sisters will repeat the mistakes of their fathers." Jinx might turn full antihero after this is done (like she is in the main canon) or she might even die (though I doubt it). Whatever happens, I doubt they'll make her everybody's main enemy (no pun intended) for an entire season. She'll most likely be the central antagonist for Vi and Cait in the first half before the second civil war begins .

Viktor
While it's easy to look at Viktor from League and call him a cartoonish villain, the people who read his lore know that he's essentially a "don't judge a book by it's cover" character. He's a good guy who's just trying to help by providing tech to those who need it. While we didn't see too much of his transformation in S1, S2 will most likely focus on his relationship with Jayce more and their unavoidable conflict most likely ignited by civil war. Viktor will no doubt try to help his fellow Zaunites by giving them tech to fight back, something that Jayce won't like, especially after the death of his girlfriend, Mel (debatable).

Sevika
With Silco out of the way, it's interesting to think about where Sevika's path will take her. Some people are convinced she will take Silco's place as the so called leader of Zaun and the shimmer industry. Some fans even speculate that she might become the infamous chem-baroness Renata Glasc (she does kinda look like her). But I doubt that's the case. Sevika is not into business or money, she fights for a free independent Zaun and that's pretty much all she cares about. The possible civil war means she'll have to lead the fight against Piltover, possibly forming an alliance with Viktor, but we'll have to see. Part of me still thinks that she'll just hang up her coat and retire. This woman took way too many punches for her cause.

Warwick/Vander ???
Out of all the Zaun characters who have yet to make their debut in Arcane, Warwick is the most likely to appear in S2. He can be heard in the teaser, seen during the ending of the show and he gets referenced over and over again during earlier episodes, especially around Vander. While lore fans know that Warwick isn't the most complex character, he is certainly one of the most iconic ones. His theme and trailer are praised to this day and he'd be an interesting addition to the cast. I'm still not sure how much they will lean into family and trauma with him, but I do hope that we'll get some iconic horror chase scenes. Camille
Yet another character who Arcane fans might not recognize. This my friends, is Camille of House Ferros, a name that you've already heard from Mel in S1. Lore fans know by now that Camille is one of League's most well crafted characters. Her lore is great, even by Arcane standards. The thing is, it's not very compatable with Arcane's narrative. In lore, hextech was created and Camille's body was modified long before Jayce and Viktor came into the picture. Which is why she's over 100 years old. Her fans aren't too keen on Arcane replacing the main narrative we have now and it's easy to see why. Regardless, I hope they'll find some way to integrate her into the story even if she'll be much younger. Camille is a big part of Piltover, her role being on par with that of characters like Vi, Cait and Jayce. So leaving her out would feel like an odd choice. Her ruthlessly efficient methods would be in perfect contrast with Vi and Cait's more empathetic approach and you can bet she'd give us some cool action scenes. While in recent weeks she was portrayed in a more positive light with the Ekko Convergence game, don't be fooled. She would do anything for her family, even if that means leaving a few bodies behind.

Urgot
Finally we get to my prefered main antagonist of S2. For those of you unaware, Urgot is the closest thing Zaun has to a main villain. He's a former headsman from Noxus (the place Mel and her family is from) who eventually gets banished to Zaun and turned into the thing you see before your eyes. The reason I believe Urgot would be the perfect main antagonist for S2 is because he embodies the antithesis to Arcane's main theme of love bonds that don't break. This man is ruthless, saddistic and pretty much the opposite of what Silco was. He's also hunting and killing chem barons to demonstrate true strength, because they weaken Zaun by becoming like topsiders, something that Silco brought up in season 1. "You've grown fat and complacent." Urgot also leads a cult that combines Noxian strength with Zaunite ingenuity. His twisted vision is brutal but fascinating. Regardless, I genuinely think he'd be the perfect antagonist to wrap up the Piltover and Zaun storyline.

According to TUA updates on twitter season 4 has officially wrapped filming so thought I'd share my hopes and predictions.
I expect a time jump but am expecting one shorter than a lot of people are saying. I think the production blurb saying they come together after 9 years is just a copy paste of season 1's. I'd guess it'll be max a year or two. I'm really really hoping for an opening like season one's with Viktor playing over a montage of the siblings to catch us up on where they are and what they've been doing.
I think Viktor going back to music now he's lost his powers makes the most sense for him and with more confidence he could be more successful now. The only thing that makes me think he might not is Elliot hated trying to learn violin and as a result his miming/playing that was dubbed over apparently looked very bad to those who know about violin. That said actors badly miming playing an instrument is not uncommon so they might be happy to go with it. If they get their powers back I can see Viktor choosing not to have his. They've mostly just caused him pain, if he's a successful musician I can see him being happy to not have them
I really hope Klaus' addiction is dealt with properly. In season 3 none of his siblings seems to be bothered by him drinking but I think this is down to drinking being seen as more socially acceptable than other drugs and he's drinking mouthwash while cleaning rooms with Stan. Robert Sheehan made a comment after season 3 but before season 4 was even announced that he thinks Klaus would fall back into old habits as a reaction to having finally putting so much work into mastering his powers and then losing them almost straight away. Now, he's not a writer but he does seem to have a pretty big influence on Klaus (he's talked about certain changes to the character coming from conversations he had with Blackman after being cast, the biggest being Klaus falling in love with Dave rather than a Vietnamese woman). Also Klaus has never worked or held down a job and I feel would struggle to do so which them makes him being homeless again more likely meaning returning to drug use would be more likely. However with a shorter episode count and him saying he feels the best he's felt in years when coming from the elevator, suggesting his years of drug use have been erased I worry it may not be addressed at all which I think is a pity. It'll feel like a large part of his arc will be dropped if that's the case. I'd also like to see him get to have a romantic relationship not ending in tragedy but I imagine that would be tricky with only 6 episodes.
I'd like to see Five have some form of emotional release in a scene, be that screaming and raging or breaking down and crying. He needs it and I think his siblings need to realise how badly the apocalypse and the commission affected him. It feel unlikely though and I'd say it won't happen if it were t for the scene in season 3 where he asks Lila to give him tha room after his older self dies. He is clearly struggling to hold it together in that scene. At the start of the seadon I think he might be trying to live a normal life. He hates Reginald but he also has repeatedly made things worse in trying to stop the apocalypse and his older self told him not to save the world. The only issue with this is he's 13 and so should be in school but I can also imagine them ignoring this and have him working in a job where he's a presumed genius kid.
I really don't know what to expect with Sloane. I think Luther will find her but I don't know if she will be his Sloane. I think they'll end up together again but initially she won't know/remember him. I don't know why Reginald separated her from the others or if it was intentional.
Whether you think she redeemable or not I think Allison is getting a redemption arc and I think she'll be the one to give the other their powers back. We already know Reginald purposefully stopped the Umbrella's from reaching full potential (he says so in season 3 to Klaus) and we've seen her powers can reality warp like in comics because in the season 2 apocalypse Five witnesses she says 'I heard a rumour I blew your minds' and the soldiers head explode. She also now no longer needs to say I heard a rumour. As such I think she will use her powers to speak her siblings powers back into existence and I'm half expecting it to start with Klaus - I can imagine him dying and her giving him back his powers to revive him (possibly unintentionally but in doing so she realises she can do the same for her siblings). I also expect her, like Viktor, choosing to get rid of her own power, again by speaking into existence. We've seen her try to stop using it multiple times because of it backfiring or causing problems so I can see her giving it up. I also think her nononger needing to say I heard a rumour may lead to her accidentally using it at some point leading to hurting and/or scaring Claire and Ray. Whether she deserves a redemption I'm unsure personally but if she gets on I hope she ends up getting to keep her husband and child personally but then I'm more sympathetic to her than lost people here. She's awful in season 3 but she's undergone trauma and loss after having being able to get what she wants for most of her life, it's in character in my opinion and I feel like the fandom is harsher on Allison than other characters (the only thing I think is unforgivable and I wish the writers hadn't written was the sexual assault on Luther).
Lila and Diego will be doing their best to be a normal family and good parents. I'm not sure what Diego wil be doing for a job since he's not a vigilante. I can't see him going back to the police academy because I think he'd still find the beuarocracy as getting in the way. We know he boxed since that was his alibi in season 1 but he obviously won't have become a professional boxer, maybe a coach or something? Maybe him and Lila both teach self defence classes? I really don't know.
Steve Blackman had confirmed that the Ben on the subway is Sparrow Ben and we should be asking 'Why is he in Korea?' and not 'Which Ben is it?' I'd like this to be misdirect but I don't think it is, Steve Blackmam often says too much in my opinion. I have no idea what to expect or why Ben is in Korea. The fact he was born on a subway is hardly a coincidence I feel but outside of that, no clue. A version of the intended season 3 story of Luther in Japan and meeting a former associate of Reginald that had to be axed due to COVID maybe? I would love for Umbrella Ben to somehow return but I do think it will happen, especially as paradox psychosis would cause issues. Maybe there's a way for Ben to say in the Hargreeves verse and the Umbrellas to return to a timeline/universe similar to their original but Ben somehow is alive? Or Sparrow Ben dies/sacrifices himself somehow in whatever final battle/quest they have to do to restore the timeline?
I think the theories of another apocalypse and letting it happen and us then seeing Five in the apocalypse is possible but I really hate it and hope that's not the ending (also it's a bit of a retread of season 3). I feel the same about them getting back to a version of their original timeline but without an apocalypse and then all splitting off because they actually don't care about it like each other very much. This feels less likely since this is very much a retread of season 3's finale. So how will it end? I don't know but I hope happily with no (permanent) character deaths and the Hargreeves being a loving, if still somewhat dysfunctional family. If they've built lives in the new universe they'd lose them by restoring the original timeline so I do wonder if they stay in the current universe but somehow stop Reggie from having so much power. I've seen someone suggest Abigail would be apalled by all he's done and leave him which would then make him...not turn over a new leaf but his main goal was always resurrecting her so if in doing so he became someone she couldn't live I can see him giving up on any attempt to fight the Umbrella's. Will he even be the main antagonist in season 4 though? I don't know who could be if not him but I also feel like it will be more complex than the Umbrellas just fighting him.
Lastly - the post about it wrapping also said that it will air either later this year or early next. Based on the time between wrapping and release for seasons 1 and 2 it could air in January but I think it'll air in February since season 1 premiered in February 2019. Season 3 had a longer post production time but I think that was mostly due to COVID.

Fifth Year Festival: Chicago

The fourth out of six events in ROH's Fifth Year Festival sees a tag team main event with ROH World Champion Takeshi Morishima and Nigel McGuinness versus Samoa Joe and Homicide. As Joe was headed off for TNA full-time, this would be his final appearance stateside for ROH. He gets a standing ovation during his ring introductions and is more emotional than I've seen him on prior stops in the tour. McGuinness has a weird alliance thing going on with Morishima, one that would end in flames as 2007 went on. After a long match that felt like all four guys were holding a bit back, McGuinness gets a stunning win over Joe with the rebound lariat. The crowd did not like that finish. I felt like this match could have been better. There was a deliberate pace that didn't work for me.
Chicago's own Colt Cabana fought Jimmy Jacobs in a Windy City Death Match. This was the culmination of Jimmy Jacobs being completely hypnotized by Lacey and willing to do whatever it took to keep her attention. This is a bloody, vicious brawl, with scissors, spikes, and broken flagpoles making both Cabana and Jacobs a bloody mess. Brent Albright interferes on Jacobs' behalf, only to be met by BJ Whitmer. Lacey gets involved, steadying a ladder while Jacobs leaps to the outside through Cabana on a table. That comes back to bite her as Cabana hits both Lacey and Jacobs with his Colt 45 finish, stacks them on top of each other and gets the pin.
ROH World Tag Team Champions Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal defended the titles against the promotion's constant threat, the Briscoe Brothers. (Jay and Mark). The Briscoe brothers have held the titles twice before, but at this point, haven't had a reign in three years. This match would be the beginning of the Briscoes as we came to know them -- the aces of the ROH tag team division. I've said on a couple of occasions that Daniels and Sydal don't seem to have any chemistry, but the presence of a well-oiled machine like the Briscoes elevates the work of the champions. This is a long match, and the weapons that served Daniels and Sydal in previous matches, like the shooting star press and the assisted Angel's Wings, fail here. The Briscoes finish the job on Sydal with a leg drop/SSP combo to begin their third tag title reign.
Roderick Strong and Davey Richards of the No Remorse Corps took on Austin Aries and Matt Cross. This is the first time Aries and Strong were on opposing sides in Ring of Honor and the first match between the two since Strong betrayed Aries earlier in the tour. Aries, in his search for allies to start his new faction (that would eventually be known as The Resilience) picked Matt Cross. Aries starts the match by going right at Strong as soon as he enters the ring, something that would be the theme of the match. Strong and Richards have added a few dirty tricks to their repertoire of hard strikes. Cross hits Strong with a moonsault to the outside and takes a very painful landing right on the edge of the guardrail. Aries finished off Richards with the 450 splash and goes outside to help Cross, but Strong and Richards decide to give Aries' new ally a second helping of guardrail pain.
If you hear whistles blowing throughout this show, that's because ROH is sharing a building with a volleyball meet.

2X14 - Stark Raving Mad - 3/5: Nothing too special from this episode, but it’s pretty enjoyable. It was interesting having Sebastian from the first season to come back as the villain of the episode with him getting revenge on the girls by targeting their areas of interests and having teens to trash them. Sebastian making the ravers to go in a rage feels similar to one episode from Samurai Jack. Love Jerry just casually strolling through the halls on a scooter and putting headphones on the girls to knock them out of their trance.
2X15 - Starstruck - 3/5: An interesting episode with one deranged woman getting fiction mixed up with reality. It does feel odd with the actors filming the movie and there was no one looking into one of the actor’s disappearance. It’s so far the one episode where the girls asked to be WOOHPed instead of unexpectedly being WOOHPed.
2X16 - S.P.I. - 5/5: This episode is the most engaging one of the season so far. I like the idea of a rival spy organization created by a WOOHP reject to put WOOHP out of business by staging burglaries and other crimes for them to look good. It does have a sad tone to it when Jerry told the girls that WOOHP would be going out of business because of SPI’s fake efficacy exceeded WOOHP’s actual efficacy and the girls and Jerry are shown to be quite close with each other as they are shown shedding tears about no longer being spies and Jerry probably wouldn’t be seeing them ever again. I did find the ray that shrinks clothes to be a bit too much.
2X17 - Animal World - 3/5: A decently enjoyable episode. The plot was interesting with a scientist named Dr. Fox using a device that administers his DNA into animals and vice versa, animal DNA into humans, to make them more intelligent and cause an uprising against the humans. Frank Welker voicing the gorilla that turned against the scientist was a surprise.
2X18 - Nature Nightmare - 4/5: I like that Clover wanted to tell the recurring character, David, that she is a spy to show him she’s not high maintenance. It feels similar to other cartoon characters where they want to tell someone a secret, but that secret can put them in danger. It feels similar to the previous episode with a scientist experimenting on a forest so that the forest can protect itself from the humans only for the forest to turn against the scientist and targets a city. It was funny with Sam being heartbroken when she learned the reporter she had a crush on is married with children.
2X19 - Alex Quits - 5/5: This episode is one of my favorites with the introduction of Britney and the girls being supportive of Alex as she believes she’s not good in anything whether it be on a mission or in school. Britney was a great addition to the series, it makes me wish she became a main character with how skilled she is and she comes off as easy to like by everyone.
2X20 - Totally Switched - 3/5: A doctor that swaps people’s personalities just because he hates hearing them complain sounds petty. It was funny with Clover and Jerry’s personalities being switched for each other, but it also felt odd when the two of them just leave it to Sam and Alex to stop the doctor from the switching the president’s personality for a rodeo clown’s because Jerry was about to be knighted and Clover had an interview with a pop star on his show. It only worked out for Clover though.
2X21 - Ski Trip - 4/5: Dr. Gelee from the episode, The Iceman Cometh, planning to take revenge on the girls during their ski trip was entertaining. It’s another episode where the girls asked to be WOOHPed instead of being WOOHPed unexpectedly since they had to share the same room with Mandy. Mandy being the hero of the episode as she unintentionally stopped Dr. Gelee by causing an avalanche to fall on him felt odd and it would’ve been nice to see her actually become friends with the girls only for it to not work out in the end.
2X22 - The Elevator - 2/5: I wouldn’t say the episode is bad, it’s just another average episode that is full of clips from past episodes that other cartoons and TV shows have. It does have the girls reminiscing about their adventures so far with how useful their gadgets came to be, the times when their gadgets failed them, the places they’ve been to for their missions, the unexpected times of being WOOHPed, the tough enemies they have fought, the boys Clover thirsted over, critiquing Alex’s driving skills, and how many times Sam pulled through with her brain on their missions.
2X23 - Matchmaker - 1/5: This episode is flavorless and just boring. It’s about as worse as Passion Patties from the first season. The villain of the episode is bitter for being broken up by his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, so he disguises himself as boys to make girls fall in love with and tries to break their hearts by not showing up to a dance. It’s disappointing that this episode is so bad when Clover is the main hero of the episode since Clover doesn’t have many big moments.
2X24 - Brain Drain - 3/5: The episode might have a weak plot with a game show host using his show to act as a cover to drain other people’s intelligence, have it to be put into his partner’s brain, and the episode is a little unbearable to watch with having Sam to be a dunce, but I’d say this episode is fairly decent. It feels similar to the Child’s Play episode of the first season with Clover and Alex having to pull through the mission without Sam since Sam’s intelligence was drained. I did like the dynamic between Clover and Alex in this episode and Clover coming up with the way to escape from the sound proof booth.
2X25 - Fashion Faux Pas - 3/5: I find Sam to be out of character in this episode with her falling for a psychic after dismissing the belief that no one can predict the future since the psychic got lucky with a few predictions, so she wasn’t putting the mission first. It was nice to see Clover and Alex being more focused than Sam during the mission and it was also entertaining with the girls chasing after Helga’s assistant Trode in the night on new motorcycles. Helga’s plan of using clothes from her fashion line to strangle people to death felt quite wicked.
2X26 - Toying Around - 3/5: This was a decent season finale with toys having minds of their own attempting to rule the world. It kind of reminds me of this one movie known as Small Soldiers where toys were experiment with missile technology that made them sentient and violent. I also like how this episode had the first simp ever in media named Randy where he does just about everything for Clover.

I've been reading a bunch of the theories posted around the traps, and I wanted take a slightly different critical approach to them. A lot of theories tend to start from a precise set of features which support their hypothesis (think of the Tarot, Slaugh, Victor's Imagination, Viking, Colonial Curse, Eldritch Entity, or Simulation / Dream / Purgatory theories), and extrapolate from there. This is an understandable function of the general mystery the show engenders, but I think that limited approaches can conceal a lot of the features which run counter to their hypotheses. I'll give two examples.
The Slaugh theory, for instance, begins with the assertion that the creatures are identical to the Irish folk monsters, and then extrapolates on several bases (including a gesture towards the eerily similar book The Watchers by A.M. Shine) to ground the theory. However, how would a creature from the folklore of Ireland explain the cables without wires or the spiders in the forest at the end of season one? No satisfactory explanation is available.
The Simulation / Dream / Purgatory theories are sloppy, I'll agree, but not impossible. The Jungian symbolism (i.e. the monsters being the shadow self, Fromville being manifested from the collective unconscious of the participants) gives this theory its depth and credibility. But this, as many have acknowledged already, is lazy; it would be too easy for the writers to cash in their chips and throw up their hands, and I would certainly find it an incredibly disappointing denouement.
I would like to focus instead on the themes of FROM, as I think they can draw to the surface some of the substrate which these theories embroider upon, and provide anchoring points for some of the theories over others. These are just some preliminary thoughts, and I'm excited to see how these themes develop as the seasons roll on. If people find this kind of analysis interesting I'll continue to post in this style.

Liminal Spaces
The town the character's wander into along the circular road is a sun-bleached vision of American rural decay. I'm from Australia and we have many towns like this. Small towns, typically built for working communities, that are abandoned as soon as their economic purpose is served, sometimes even half-finished. Flight from rural to urban locations, particularly in pursuit of work in response to the economic crises of the last few decades, could also be an explanation of this general character. The ghost towns left behind, the ruins of things—these are liminal places.
This theme connects to the first and elaborates it. The buildings in Fromville are clearly not all from the same era. I think it might make for dull watching in the series itself, but I hope at some point we get some kind of architectural survey of the buildings and their styles. Colony house resembles a plantation style homestead; the town a 60s or 70s pitstop; the church building—while probably not a church to begin with—with its stone construction looks to be older still, perhaps even early colonial; the cave paintings in the caverns evoke the Lascaux galleries; and the odd shrine which Boyd finds the talismans in seems medieval in character. These are all forgotten and decaying places—places which you pass through, not linger in. Additionally there are decaying stone structures all around the place, including ritual structures like cairns and henges.

You find similar scenery in novels by Steven King, or TV series like True Detective. There they appeal to a general sense of social decay. This leads into the second major theme:
Disintegration and Anomie
The people who are arriving in the town, like the architecture, are in some way cast adrift from the world. This can be caused by something as serious as drug addiction or the deaths of children, or something as facile as retirement or the sale of a company. The fallen tree literally cuts them off from these paths, causing them to deviate into Fromville. The world there is thinly held together and, much like twenty-first century life, a fine line separates its residents from extreme conditions of deprivation. Throughout the series this theme of anomie, the breakdown of social relations and moral values, and the attempt to maintain those relations and values is frequently returned to. In the most recent episode a food shortage kicked off a xenophobic response from at least one resident of Colony House.
Arguably this is a theme of much cultural fodder, as it is the stuff of everyday life, however here it has a more biting purpose. The creatures which stalk in the night are, for all intents and purposes, just as human as the Fromville residents, up until they get close. The distrust this creates, which clearly plays on the character's minds even during night-time encounters with other humans, reflects a general decay of human bonds. The "games" they play with people further cement this, reflecting an anarchic hunger and violence. Additionally, the existence of these creatures also creates rifts between the human characters, causing further disintegration, and sometimes, as in the case of Colony House, death. Isn't the reason that fool invites the creature inside his feeling of being misunderstood by the others?
The characters pursue their own disorganised agendas, held together (nominally) by Boyd and Donna. This precarious balance is easily upset, and when it does not only do the relations begin to disintegrate, the landscape and architecture do also. When they try to intervene into Fromville, the place responds violently, as if any attempt to rectify the state of affairs (i.e. by leaving) will simply displace their social disintegration into the environment, causing a new wave of social disintegrations. I couldn't help but think of the metabolic rift: how human disconnection from the environment, despite our reliance on it for subsistence, is caused by our mode of social organisation. This ecological aspect is particularly interesting to me, and I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this topic. There are some counter-indications, such as the forest's imputed ability to move, but this could also be connected.
Folklore
The folkloric aspect of this show is just so fascinatingly conceived! I don't think that the creatures in Fromville are vampires, draugar, wendigos, na slaugh, etc., but they are surely drawn from some kind of prototypical creature which contains elements of each of them. We have seen, for instance, that they do not bleed when cut (despite being warm to the touch!), that they can shape-shift, that they knock on doors and call out resident's names. Most of these folkloric creatures, from a functional perspective, are explanations for some kind of fundamental social transgression, such as incest, murder, cannibalism, sacrilege, or infanticide. The inhumanity of the creatures is a reflection of the human capacity to defy social norms, and all are described in language usually reserved for the dead: desiccated, bloated, decaying. This relates, blatantly, back to the theme of disintegration and anomie—each of these folkloric creatures are the embodiment of the most vile aspects of human societies.
Arachnids and annelids have been significant symbolic presences in FROM. Spider-webs are obvious symbols of entanglement, and their method of paralysing victims and digesting them extra-orally seems to cohere with the theme of disintegration. This makes me lean towards the Pitcher Plant theory, that Fromville is some kind of digestive system for a larger, more horrifying eldritch entity. But this is not the only symbol. Worms, a symbol of the boundary of death and life, have become a major symbol in season two. While they have a contemporary gothic resonance, they have had more positive symbolism in different periods, particularly as the object of increase rituals designed to ensure a better harvest. I'm excited to see where this goes, but I wonder if these animals are only present as thematic pap to differentiate each season.
I don't know as much about talismans, but they are pretty ubiquitous, and are subsumed within the category of apotropaic magic. The protection of a home by some kind of magical object is as old as the hills. This protection of domestic space, in contrast to the violence of the outside world, foregrounds the theme of social disintegration. To say that the talismans clinch a particular theory on account of their etchings or designs seems a little premature to me, as most etchings on stone using simple tools are sharp-angled.
At the end of the day FROM is a melting pot of different cultural symbols, and so I think the assertion that they are all drawn from American history (or from the cultures of its emigrants) is a little ill-conceived. Despite having Chinese characters there is little to no reference to Chinese folklore or mythology—Tian-chen Liu notably wears a cross. With that said, it might be possible that her name represents I Ching hexagram 25 ䷘, which would be quite welcome. Maybe someone with more experience with the I Ching could contribute here.

Episode 1- Woecome back to Nevermore.
We slowly zoom in on the Addams Family House. Gloomy and as spooky as ever. As the camera zooms in, we go through a window and see Thing, the disembodied and sentient hand. He's just chased a big spider away. Suddenly the voice of Mortica Addams was heard
"Dinner is ready, my dark angel"
Wednesday Stands up from her typewriter desk and walks out of her room. She begins her inner Monolog as she walks to the dining room and sits down while her food is being brought up
"The last few months away from Nevermore have been as I suspected. Pure torture. That be it from Mother and Father's continuous hideous display of affection, to Pugsley being as pathetic as ever. Never would I have thought I'd miss being away from here"
Wednesday finally gets her food as Morticia begins to speak
"So, are you ready to return to Nevermore again dear?"
Wednesday looks into the void
"You mean where I almost died and successfully solved a serial killer case? I would say my return would be more than adequate for my sanity"
Gomez and Morticia share a proud look as Gomez looks at Wednesday
"Oh, we just knew you'd love it there. We're so happy that you made some friends."
Wednesday looks offended
"They are not my friends, they're merely the classmates I've become acquainted with."
Pugsley eats more as he looks at her
"Isn't that just another word for "friend"?"
Wednesday glares
"It is not…"
Wednesday finishes her dinner as she returns to her room and sits down at her chair. She moves her eyes so she can see behind to her left
"I know you're there, Thing…"
He scurries on her desk and taps away, talking to her
"I suppose you can come back with me this semester. That is… if you do my bidding yet again?"
Thing does a "Yes Sir" salute. He scurried over to Wednesday's purse and tapped on it
"What? I have already packed all I need."
Thing opens it, and out slides her Phone. The same phone Xavier gave to her all those months ago.
"I said I will NEVER be a slave to technology, Thing. Besides, that stalker still has my number."
Thing taps away again
"My "friends?" If they are so inclined to be that word, they will just have to wait until tomorrow."
Thing picks it up and slides it on her desk as he taps the screen. Wednesday has multiple next messages
"sighs Fine, I suppose I can take a quick gander."
She opens the notifications, from Xavier. The only named contact in her phone
Xavier-
63 Days Ago- Wednesday? I know you said you'd never call me, but I just want to know if you're doing alright?
50 Days Ago- Really? Still ignoring me? You always did enjoy the silent treatment.
31 Days Ago- Um… for real are you just gonna ignore me? I thought we ended on a better note last semester?
17 Days Ago- Ok then… I'm just gonna assume that I'm talking to a dead phone. That thing cost a fortune by the way, you're welcome… just… I guess I'll see you around?
Yesterday- Well if you ever see this… just know I will be attending a new school this year…
Wednesday looks strangely alarmed at the last message
"New school? I guess it won't hurt to check in on him?"
Thing taps, saying to go for it

Almost instantly… she gets a response
Xavier-
Ha! You fell for the bait! I knew you had some kind of a heart.
Wednesday could just feel the rage in her swell as she realized she was tricked

Wait! I'm sorry, Okay? I just wanted to try one last thing. Just tell me, are you coming back this semester?
Wednesday thinks… should he tell him? Or just wait for the next day? She decides to be nice for today

That's good. Can't wait to see you again. Thing coming along too?
Thing reads it and signs something
Wednesday-
He said to not make him put you back in that squad car.
Xavier-
Ha ha. By the way… Did you ever try to contact Enid? You know how much you mean to her? Ajax says she's been kinda down lately.
Wednesday-
I do not have a way of getting her number. Nor do I want her flooding my phone with those insipid little pictures.
Xavier-
I get that. 😉 And don't worry, I haven't told anyone about you getting that phone.

And with that, Wednesday put her phone back in her bag. Thing taps again
"No, that did not change anything. I still loathe modern technology. And do not spy on my stuff again…"
He bows in apologies
"Now, return to Mother and Father please. I require my space"
Wednesday does some more writing. She's already working on drafts for "Viper De La Muerta: Más Venenosa" The sequel to her book. A few hours go by, and she checks the clock. It says 11:54 P.M. She needs to get some sleep. So she ends her paragraph, wishing a good night to her parents. Her bed is a full queen sized bed, all to herself. It's all black and she has a gray-black blanket. She eventually falls asleep. Suddenly she's somewhere she doesn't understand
Enid is on the ground writhing in pain
"Ahhh! Heeelp!"
"Enid!?"
Wednesday goes to her, surprised. She then sees Xavier getting beat up by strangers
"Ah! Oh! Get the hell back!"
"Xavier!?"
He's punched to the floor as Wednesday tries to help, and now sees Eugene knocked out in the corner and a seemingly lifeless Sheriff Galpin. She then hears a voice
"I'm still out there Wednesday!!!"
Wednesday wakes up and is in a panic, sweating
"Xavier? Enid!? Eueg…
she looks around… a nightmare? She rubs her head and takes a sip of Water from her bottle. She checks her alarm clock
"4:45? Still a few more hours."
She lays back down and wakes up at 7:30. No more nightmares for the rest of the morning
"Good morning Pugsley…"
Pugsley takes a bite of his cereal
"Hey sis… you know I'm…
"Going to miss me?"
She finishes the sentence
"I know, I will miss the way you scream from your hair pulling too."
Morticia enters the room
"Alright darling, Lurch is waiting."
"Okay Mother. I am ready"
Wednesday and Pugsley share a hug, Wednesday not completely enjoying it. She says her goodbyes to her Parents too. Wednesday gets in the car as Lurch drives off. They eventually get to Jericho County. She looks at some of the buildings she remembers from last semester. The hearse rolls up to the Nevermore gates and enters. Lurch opens the door and Wednesday steps out. She monologs again
"Nevermore seemed the same as ever. The same annoying people. The same clueless teachers. And just a little less serial killers. Maybe… that is"
"Lurch, you can go ahead and go. I'll handle the luggage from here."
Lurch nods and drives off. Wednesday puts her bag on her shoulders as she starts to pull her cello case
"That looks kinda heavy?"
Wednesday turns to look at the voice. Xavier. She rolls her eyes
"Need a hand?"
Wednesday sighs
"I suppose"
He grabs the cello and walks with her
"It's nice to see you again. Wish I could say you've gotten taller but…"
"Don't comment on my height."
"Just joking hehe."
Wednesday does not find it amusing
"I suppose the feeling of seeing you is mutual?"
She finds it hard to talk with him. She doesn't know why, but she feels the need to say something to him? Something from last year. She ignores it. They get up to Ophelia hall as they knock. A familiar girl with pink and blue hair answers
"OMG! I missed you so much!?!?"
Enid hugs her tightly, she gets pushed back
"Right… no hug unless it's a near death experience. Right! And Hi Xavier!"
She gives him a small hug too. She Whispers at him
"So… you two gonna hook up? Please tell me…"
Xavier looks terrified
"What!? No… no no no… of course not! We only texted a…. Enid's eyes grow shit…"
She glares at the two
"YOU have a f*cking Phone!? Just when were you gonna tell me!? We could've talked alllll break!? Give me your number now and I'll show you the ways of Facebook, and Insta, and Tiktok, and blogging and…"
"Enid!"
Wednesday interrupts
"Could you hold your thoughts for a second before I vomit!? You're giving me a headache and I've only seen you for 43 seconds."
Enid calms down
"Okay… you're right. I'm sorry. But hey, when were YOU gonna tell me Mr. Artsy Fartsy!?"
Xavier looks confused
"Me!? Would you want to break that kinda promise with her…?"
Enid looks at an already angered Wednesday
"I guess that's fair Xavier. So, I hear you and Ajax are now roomies?"
He nods
"Yep. The councilors said it should be fine."
Wednesday interjects
"I thought Gorgons could only be roommates with other Gorgons?"
Xavier clarifies
"As long as he wears his hat, and I don't walk in on him taking a shower… I'll be fine.*
Enid looks excited
"Speaking of Ajax… I'm gonna go see him! BRB!"
She walks out the door as Wednesday walks to her desk and places her Typewriter out of her bag and onto her desk
"Wow. Still using that old dinosaur huh?"
She looks offended
"Of course I am? It is the only true way of writing"
Xavier stands next to her
"What if you mistype a word? You just start over the whole page?"
Wednesday places her pages as she continues talking
"Only amateurs would make that kind of mistake in their work. Anyway, are you just going to annoy me or can I get some work done?"
Xavier looks annoyed
"Excuse me for trying to be nice? I thought you'd have a better understanding of friendship after last year?"
Wednesday gets up fast… but doesn't turn around, Xavier notices
"What? Did that break your thick layer of angst?"
Wednesday turns around. She somehow has a guilty look in her eyes despite being the same lifeless ones
"I… I… I apologize…"
Xavier looks less annoyed now
"It's fine… I know you don't fully get social interaction that well and…"
She interrupts
"No… not for that…"
"Huh?"
Xavier looks at her confused. Wednesday looks at him now
"I apologize for what happened last semester… for everything. Misjudging you, tricking you with the Rave'n, getting you arrested, and for ignoring your messages. Okay?. I should've listened to you more, not Tyler. I'm sorry…"
Wednesday sits down as that took everything out of her
"Wow, uh… that… thank you Wednesday. That means a lot from you."
Wednesday nods
"Consider us even?"
"Not yet…"
Wednesday looks confused
"Why?"
"I have some things to tell you. But first we need to get to that assembly. It starts in like 8 minutes. We get to meet the new principal"
Wednesday begrudgingly agrees and grabs her small bag. Thing jumps on her shoulder
"Hey Thing! How's it going buddy!?"
Thing makes a fist for a fist bump to where they collide. They make their way to the door and Xavier opens it. Only to find Enid who falls on the floor. Xavier looks confused
"Enid, what the hell are you doing? Wait… were you listening to us?"
Enid stands up and straightens her shirt
"Uh no…"
Xavier dusts some dirt off her shoulder
"Then what were you doing against the door?"
Enid panics
"Uh… I was scratching my head on the door. You know us werewolves. Always itchy! Hehe.
Wednesday gets mad
"Enid, there is nothing to spy on us for. Me and Xavier are just friends and that's it? Stop wishing a relationship into fruition."
Enid sulks
"Fine… I promise…"
She walks away. Wednesday looks at Xavier who kinda smirks
"What Xavier?"
He chuckles
"Nothing. Just didn't think I'd hear you call me, or anyone a friend"
"Would you prefer us not to be?"
She said sternly
"It's a joke, calm yourself. Let's get going to that assembly"
They walk out of the dorm and to the assembly area. Wednesday begins to think about Principal Weems. She starts her inner Monolog
"Principal Weems and I may have had our differences, but in the end she was not so bad. She did try and help me take down Laurel Gates. Unfortunately that is what resulted in her untimely demise. She deserved better."
She stands by the group of students as the new principal gets to the stand. He looks middle aged with mid length black hair. He has a five o'clock shadow and wears a black suit and pants. He begins his speech
"Hello everyone, my Nevermore students. It will be an honor to be the new principal at this fine and unique school. Now, I know most of you miss Larissa Weems dearly. But I assure you I will do everything in my part to fill that void"
A lot of the students look rather skeptical
"We hope you all enjoyed your forced vacation, and we welcome everyone back. And we hope you all healed well after last year's… unfortunate incident. But know this, we will take extra precautions with our students' safety. We would also like to give a special thanks to one of our students. Please, give a nice round of applause to our very own…. Wednesday Addams!"
He and the other students start clapping with praise. She looks around embarrassed and also sees Enid and Xavier happily joining in the applause
"We'd also like to thank some other students who helped on that dreadful night. Enid Sinclair, Xavier Thorpe, Bianca Barclay, Yoko Tanaka, Ajax Petropolus, Kent and Divina Waters, and Eugene Ottinger!"
Everyone cheers for the heroes of last semester
"We would also like to ask Ms. Addams some questions?"
Someone comes to her with a mic, Enid and Xavier step in front of her. Enid talks first
"Whoa, whoa! Wednesday does not like to talk in open crows…"
Xavier joins in too
"Yeah, yeah, she uh… gets nervous?"
The others agree. The Principal nods
"Okay, that's fair. We won't push anything on you kids. Oh I almost forgot, my name is Principal Kevin Fairbanks. Now, you may go on with your day. Classes start in 1 hour"
Everyone disperses. Wednesday grabs Enid's shoulder
"You didn't have to do that."
"It's okay, I know how my bestie is about crowds."
She smiles as she walks away. Wednesday walks into another direction. She ends up at the Bee Farm. She goes up to the little hut and knocks. A familiar voice is heard behind her
"Wednesday?"
Wednesday hears the voice and turns around
"Hello Eugene, How was…."
She turns around to talk, expecting him to be the same height. He's like a foot taller now she actually has to look up at him
"What happened to you?"
Eugene looks confused
"Guess I hit a growth spurt? Hehe"
Wednesday is now processing how he's so tall while she's still the same height
"Anyway, I see you have healed up nice?"
Eugene nods
"Yeah, everything's good. And I'm ready for a great bee year. Things are supposed to be going strong. Will you still join the Hummers again this year?"
Wednesday nods
"Possibly. Depends on what else is on my schedule. Well Eugene, I must be going. Goodbye"
"Later Wednesday!"
Wednesday leaves the Bee Farm aera. Eugene's sudden growth in height makes her more self conscious than she cares to admit. She walks through The Quad when a voice is heard behind her
"Hey Addams."
She turns around and sees Bianca Barclay at the fountain, also accompanied by her "side kicks" Kent and Divina
"Bianca. I see you still have your henchmen at your side?"
The twins toll their eyes as Kent speaks up
"We're more than just her "henchmen" Wednesday. We can do anything that she does."
Wednesday retort
"Except excelling at the Poe Cup. I look forward to a rematch in future team events…"
Divina steps forward
"That won't happen again. It was just a fluke, us underestimating you."
"Flukes are just excuses for things not going the way you intend."
Now Bianca stands up
"Alright, enough you guys. But I hope you sharpened up on your fencing. We WILL be taking the title this semester."
Wednesday doesn't even look threatened
"There is no need for practice, I have full faith in my swordsmanship."
"We'll see, Addams. Just you wait. Your ass will be handed to you yet again "
Wednesday looks bored
"My posterior isn't beaten easily… anyway I need to go. Herbology is starting soon."
Wednesday arrives at Herbology class. Being here again brings back some memories. Like getting smacked with a shovel. Weems' Death. And most importantly… Ms. Thornhill aka Laurel Gates. It's a good thing she's now rotting in prison. She takes a seat in the second row, as she feels someone else take another next to her. It's Xavier again
"We always seem to be desk mates, huh?"
Wednesday looks at her books
"It is not a coincidence when there are no assigned seats. You chose it"
Xavier rolls his eyes
"No shit… Anyway I've been meaning to ask something."

*It almost escaped her mind, she doesn't care to admit that either."

She takes her phone out of her pocket and turns it on
"Can I see who it is?"
She hand sit to him
"I have been receiving stalker images. They involve me and you and me and… Tyler as well."
Xavier looks at them and nods, a bit worried
"I see… have you told anyone? This could be serious, you know?"
*Wednesday looks at him."
"Serious things intrigue me more."
just then Xavier sees something in the text feed.
"Whoa…"
*What? What is it?"
He points at the bottom of the screen.
"See those lines moving… that means someone is typing. Right now.*
The pictures that are sent are startling. One is of Xavier's dorm room. The other is Wednesday and Enid's room. And the last is of Xavier and Wednesday sitting at a desk in herbology class… where they are right now…
Stalker-
You don't just have to worry about yourself, Wednesday… your friends too…
"Holy shit… this is some creepy shit. "
"Don't worry. I will get to the bottom of this eventually…"
They meet the new teacher and finish class. Xavier asks her something before they go.
"Hey, there's been something I've wanted to tell you. Can you meet me at my Art Studio. Tonight? 9:00. It isn't anything weird, I promise."
Wednesday looks conflicted
"I will think about it. Do not tell Enid. She thinks there's something going… on… between us."
Xavier giggles
"She's a strange one, always following you like a wolf pup. Anyway, see you there maybe. Bye Wednesday."
The rest of the day goes smoothly for the most part as she heads back to the dorms. Wednesday goes back to Ophelia Hall and enters her and Enid's dorm. she Immediately holds a grossed out face
"Enid, what is that revolting stench burning my olfactory senses…?"
Enid perks up from her magazine
"What? Oh, you mean the sweet air freshener I just got? It's great. You don't agree?"
Wednesday looks nauseous
"It smells like a unicorn farted in here… super sweet and sugary… revolting."
Enid rolls her eyes
"I can't have anything that I like in here, can I? You get your clickety clackety typewriter, your giant ass Cello, your early morning meditation sessions, what do I get?"
Wednesday goes over to her bed and grabs a light jacket
"You get your phone? Your blinding nail polish and hair dye. Not to mention your obnoxious Korean musicals."
Enid breaths slowly, trying not to snap
"Do not… disrespect my K-Pop… Anyway where are you headed? It's like 8:30?"
Wednesday grabs her small bag
"I have an event to attend to. It's really nothing to blow a gasket over."
Enid squeals
"Is it… a date!?"
Wednesday nearly gags
"What? No? He just needs to talk?"
"So it is with Xavier… called it.."
Wednesday's not having it
"Enid, it is only a conversation. If there was something going on I would tell you. Now please… no more squealing… Thing, stay with Enid so she doesn't spy on me again"
Enid pouts
"Aw, no fair!?"
Wednesday journeys to Xavier's Art Studio. Arriving here fills her stomach with regret, for whatever reason she doesn't understand. She knocks on the wooden door. 15 seconds goes by, and no answer. Wednesday assumes that he isn't there and goes to leave when the door opens
"Wednesday. You made it. And you didn't break into my shed."
Wednesday turns around and walks in
"Don't expect that to be a regular occurrence. So, you said you wanted to speak with me?"
Xavier nods as he puts down his brush and turns off the radio
"Yes."
"Well, what is there you need to say to me?"
Xavier sits down on his stool to have a more eye to eye view of her
"Wednesday, I really appreciate you apologizing earlier. I know it sounds weird, but… I spent weeks wondering if you ever thought that. It's my turn to apologize now."
"You have nothing to apologize for"
He interjects
"Yes… I do. Obviously we both know we didn't exactly get along at some points, even though I wanted to."
She nods agreeingly
"That would be an understatement"
"I know… I know… I realize now, how much of a creep I looked. I didn't leave you alone when you asked. I shouldn't have told you who to and who not to hang out with. I was a total ass when you would tell me the other way. And then… when I said I should've let Rowan kill you. I… I didn't mean that. I was just angry and betrayed. You probably don't know this… but I even asked Bianca to erase you from my memory…"
Wednesday looks on, telling him to continue
"I'm so sorry. And after looking back, I don't know if I deserve to be your friend. So… if you don't want to be around me… I understand…"
Wednesday looks kinda overwhelmed by his venting. She honestly didn't realize how much he cares deep inside
"My conscience tells me that I should do what you've told me. To walk away"
She turns and looks at one of his paintings, a Raven
"But my conscience isn't always right."
Xavier's depressed face turns around into a hopeful one
"Wait… are you saying…"
Wednesday nods
"Yes. We can still be… Fff… frrr…. Friends…"
Xavier gets up to hug her but he stops himself. He's seen Enid denied hundreds of times so he brushes it off awkwardly
"I appreciate it. From here on out, I'll try to listen to you more."
"A small start would be to stop looking like a guilty psychotic serial killer all the time."
Xavier agrees with a nod
"Yeah… guess I did turn up at the worst times, eh?"
Wednesday looks at his painting more
"Indeed you did. Did you paint this recently?"
He walks up next to her
"Uh huh. I actually painted it last night at home. After you finally responded to me, I made that. Please… don't take it as I'm drooling over you or something?"
She nods no
"No. No, I get it. It's some good work. It's… amazing even. Oh, and if you tell anyone about this conversation I will shoot you with an arrow myself this time"
"Wouldn't want it any other way, Wednesday"
Wednesday walks away and gives a slight smirk as she turns to the exit
"I shall see you tomor…"
As she touches the door, her head jerks back and her eyes go wide as she falls back
Xavier: Wednesday!?!
He catches her as she falls. She sees a vision. She sees Xavier tied up against a wall as he's stabbed in the gut as he screams in agony. She then wakes up as Xavier is talking to her
"Hey? Hey!? You okay? You took a dive there. Was it… another vision?"
She stands up and brushes herself off
"Indeed…"
"What'd you see?"
She looks at him, actually kinda scared
"You… you were… stabbed…"

The Town
Town is entered by turning around at a fallen tree covered in Ravens.
Ravens fly away in a pattern resembling an infinity sign.
Town cannot be exited by road, but you can travel beyond the town limits by going through the forest.
Electricity comes from wires that lead nowhere.
Radios sometimes turn on by themselves and play music that has personal significance to people there, particularly Boyd.
Objects belonging to townsfolk sometimes show up despite them not being brought.
Weird nonsense layout, things like a motel sign but no motel.
Buildings can collapse in a deliberate manner, happens after hole is dug in one to caves below.
No one has ever entered from outside the United States.
Of all the books that have ever entered the town, there has never been a single bible or any other holy text.
Monsters
1950s clothing.
Clothing is real, doesn't change.
Display self awareness. Do things that display a non-single minded ness like examining themselves in mirrors and playing with steering wheels.
Know the name of everyone in town.
Always kill sadistically, ribcage is often but not always torn open. One girl was impaled through the head and forced to watch their boyfriend mutilated, another skinned alive.
Smiling.
Never observed running.
Used to shriek until the talismans were discovered, at which point they began talking instead. Still talking but now shrieking again after the storm.
Under the town
Caves where the monsters sleep. Monsters sleep in monster form.
Caged creepy kids that appear in visions if you look at them.
Personal belongings of townsfolk that they didn't bring with them.
Toys, notable jenga puzzle and laughing ventriloquist dummy.

Fields of spider webs containing spiders that bite.

As the middle child of the legendary Aang and Katara, the waterbender Kya grew up feeling the need to find herself. I was initially one of the few people who didn't believe in the miscarriage theory and it was because I didn't want it to be true. In fact, sometimes I'd reassure myself by saying, "It's only a theory".
The reason? I'm a huge baby when it comes to child death and anything in that "neighbourhood". I could handle Brandy not being able to have kids, because there was (AFAIK) never an actual baby or fetus; it just couldn't happen, but miscarriages are too similar to the death of a child for me. And no, I wasn't traumatised by something that happened; I'm just a sook.
When I learnt it was true, I cried myself sick and was glum for the rest of the day, and ever since then, I can't think of the show the same way -- I can't bring myself to watch it, and even hearing the theme song makes me feel sad.
And it didn't just make me sad, either, it made me paranoid. Because I was blindsided -- the miscarriage thing was kind of hidden, so I'm worried that the show might be hiding other unpleasant things, and that's a disturbing thought.
And it's a real drag, because before finding out it was true, I loved the show. I found it hilarious and adorable, especially the episodes about them playing goofy games, like "Trains" and "The Doctor".
So, basically, I want to either A.) Find a new show that does the same things as this one but without any hidden darkness, or B.) Get rid of this feeling.
