2023.06.03 04:57 nimmoisa000 Open world crime game idea Cartel: Palm City.
Developed by Hangar 13, DICE, Ripple Effect Studios, EA Gothenburg, and Criterion Games and published by EA.
Additionally former EA Black Box and Ghost Games employees who would help access game assets and code from previous NFS titles to streamline the development)
Cartel (or alternatively as “Cartel: Palm City” or "Cartel: Miami" ) would be an open world title based on the Mafia Games, the GTA games and the Saints Row games, with elements of Battlefield: Hardline thrown in with an array of weapons and vehicles based on their real life counterparts.
Gameplay wise the driving would be like Need for Speed titles, and on foot and shooting mechanics like BF: Hardline and Saints Row. Plus you can customize your cars and weapons to the same extent in BF: 2042 and some cars would allow for mounted weapons,on foot you can execute people with your equipped weapon like in The Godfather games. On foot would be an FPS view (you can change to a third person view as well) same with having an FPS view in your car.
There would an single player experience point system (like in BF Hardline single player) you gain XP from killing gangsters, and cops blowing up or capturing enemy vehicles and completing main missions, side missions and activities also there will be 15 levels to achieve with each level up unlocking new weapons, vehicles and customization for your weapons and vehicles. As well as a New Game Plus (NG+) where everything you unlocked is carried over and you can also play on the higher difficulties through NG+.
Also there would be five wanted levels for police and five vendetta levels for the gangs should you reach level five gang vendetta you start a Gang War there are three ways to stop a Gang War either bribe the feds, blow up a gang stronghold, or hide out in a safe house. Police wanted levels one and two local units would come after the player, at police wanted level two or three the state police would come after the player. At wanted level four and five the feds would come after the player. The military will only come after the player if they trespass in Fort Rockport or the Palmount Naval Shipyard
The Storyline
In Cartel: Palm City; in a different universe and timeline where there's a total prohibition of all narcotics in the United States in 2010; tells the story of Jack Rourke (the player character) a hardworking rideshare driver at day and a street racer at night who's scraping by in Palm City circa 2019. One fateful night, Jack Rourke has an inadvertent brush with the Blackwell Syndicate (mainly Carl Stoddard and that showcases a life of reward too big to ignore. As he joins the Blackwell Syndicate who are fighting for control of Palm City against five other criminal groups and take the city for the Blackwell Syndicate including recovering evidence that could not only convict the Blackwell Syndicate, as well as a network of crime lords in many countries, (including the other gang’s backers) including the Blackwell Syndicate's backers the Mob and it would also directly implicate the CIA in Palm City’s drug trade with Jack Rourke earning the nickname “El Sicario” for his efforts in driving the other gangs out of Palm City. When he learns how much the drugs were hurting the people of Palm City and all over the country as well as learning that the Blackwell Syndicate had gotten into the drug trade themselves, he contacts FBI agent Chase Linh who relays the story to her and offers the evidence and his testimony in exchange for full immunity for him and his associates, and the evidence on the computer was enough to convict everyone form all the five gangs, but also their crime lord backers from at least half a dozen countries, as well implicating the CIA in this as well as lobbying efforts to keep all narcotics prohibited, leading to a new administration repealing the Narcotics Prohibition law and legalizing low level cannabis. However six months later after the repeal of the Narcotics Prohibition Jack Rourke would be gunned down by Russian Mafia hitmen, Dimitri "Dima '' Mayakovsky and Henry "Black" Blackburn.

The Blackwell Syndicate would be the gang that the player would join. In Act 1, they're an outside and fast tracked to soldier, but in Act 2 the player would be a capo until the end of the game. They are secretly backed by both The Mob and the CIA through Agent Dawes. Jonathan Cross and Mia Townsend are also on the gang's payroll until "Bon Appetit" where Marcus Blackwell executes him with a 870P Magnum to the head. Also Mia would also go with Jack Rourke as well
The police/military force
PCPD - the police force of Palm City/Miami if the player does hostile acts (killing civilians, firing unsuppressed weapons in public, etc) will attract police attention and each kill from them awards 50 XP for regular members and 100 XP for armored members, However the player can bribe the PCPD to look the other way or will even help the player fight the other gangs but would be the target of higher level police forces. (Sort of like it was in The Godfather game) The player can also buy favors from them as well. Also they’ll deploy stronger units at higher heat level alongside the FBI. The cars PCPD drives are the Ford Crown Victoria, Dodge Challenger, Pontiac GTO, and the Chevy Grand Sport
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) - The state police force and Only appears in wanted levels 3 and above, Each kill from them awards 75 XP for regular state troopers and 150 XP for tactical state troopers. Regular state troopers drives Ford Mustang GTs tactical state troopers drives Nissan GT-R
FBI - Only appears in wanted level 5 the FBI will be called in if the player continues to retaliate against the PCPD. Each kill from them awards 125 XP for regular agents, 250 XP for FBI SWAT and 375 XP for FBI HRT, Like the PCPD the player can bribe the FBI to look the other way, or even help the player fight gangs, or the PCPD but at the second highest price. The FBI also has the second widest array of favors the player can buy. regular agents drives the Nissan 350Z or Porsche 911 GT3 RS, FBI SWAT drives the - Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster or Ford F-150 SVT Raptor L.E. and FBI HRT drives the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X or Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR
Military - Only goes after the player if they trespass in Fort Rockport or the Palmount Naval Shipyard. Each kill from them awards 200 XP for regs, 400 XP for experienced troops and 600 XP for elite troops. Like the PCPD, State Police and the FBI, the player can bribe the military to look the other way, or even help the player fight gangs, the PCPD, State Police or even the FBI but at the highest price and The military also has the widest array of favors the player can buy in large part due to Agent Dawes’ connections in Washington.
Multiplayer portion of the game would take place during the five cartels war where the Blackwell Syndicate, The Volk, Palm Kings, Dixie Paldines, Los Salmos 16, and The House (basically where Jack Rourke glosses over saying "It was non-stop chaos for weeks")
Also there would be a free ride mode where the player can explore the city at their leisure or pick a fight with either other cartels or the cops.

2023.06.02 14:26 Spiritual_Shift_920 Guide to Dehaka - Tips, Tricks & Talents
Disclaimer. I am currently master ranked offlane player who has been playing the game since launch competitively & casually, on all ranks between gold and GM. I took a bit of a break after the last guides but upon several requests to continue making these, I was inspired to continue making them again. This particular guide got extremely long due to concerning a fairly complex hero and I like being thorough with my explanations. Links to other guides can be found at the end.
Dehaka is one of the ‘’big three’’ bruisers of high rank bruiser play (The unholy trinity of HoggeBlaze/Dehaka) and while other bruisers do also see play, its difficult to find a game where all of these 3 do not exist in either bans or picks. Dehaka, while not any weaker than the other two and situationally stronger, he does have a bit more counterplay to it than the others.
Drafting Dehaka
Synergistic heroes Dehaka works really well with things that can quickly kill a drag target that often rely on short range. Some examples below;
Additionally, heroes that have high duration powerful AoE effects that Dehaka can reposition people into with his Drag and his level 4.
Heroes Dehaka can struggle into
- Junkrat Using steel traps in bushes near a fight makes for a miserable time to play Dehaka. You cannot really rely on Z flanks the same way you could otherwise since you might risk a 2.5 second silence + root.
- Lucio - Hard to drag with too many cleanses. The Q also interrupts drags and makes it much more hard to get to a position to drag. Lucio and Junkrat are by far the two worst partners in crime for the lizard to face.
- Brightwing - Cleanse and high range interrupt to a drag with polymorph. You usually have to bait out the poly on someone else before attempting to go for a Q.
- Ana - After 13, having a stun removal that gives 50 armor with a 2s CD is pretty nasty, and so is the ability to deny all healing from essence with a basic ability. Thankfully, Ana is fairly vulnerable to getting ran down herself by Dehaka by a good brushstalker. Just be ready to use E quickly to avoid the sleep.
- Deathwing - Not only is he immune to drags, but his massive hitbox is fairly efficient at blocking drags on everyone else either.
- Cho’gall - Dehaka doesn’t have the greatest single target damage to burn him down, and Gall can interrupt drags with his stunning orbs even as he is being dragged himself. On the flipside, Dehaka can focus more on macro and punish the inflexibility of chogall draft to deal with him.
Heroes Dehaka is good into
Just to be clear, there are not many heroes that like being dragged for 2.25 seconds into bad positions. There are some standouts regardless that he is extremely effective against.
- Diablo - Into Diablo he is amazing. He is the easiest target to hit with a drag in the game with his aggressive playstyle, and he is fairly easy to blow up in a drag if you have any of the heroes that Dehaka is typically great with. After level 4, Dehaka himself is practically immune to Diablo himself because of his stealth.
- Imperius - The level 4 talent destroys him in all the ways possible. No spears, no E, no nothing.
- Kerrigan - She is extremely easy to drag due to her telegraphed back to front movement, and you can use your E to protect any allies from her combos while avoiding those aimed towards you entirely.
Maps
To cut it short, what makes for a great Dehaka map:
- Lots of bushes
- Large size to utilize global
- Macro focused maps
- Camps that are easily defended with Drag
- Maps with split objectives
S tier maps
Dragon Shire
So Dragon Shire is great for several reasons. The nature of the split objective is one such. The bottom shrine is positioned in such a way, where the only ‘safe’ way out of the shrine is usually by walking through a bush which is also known as the lizard territory. Another is the quantity of maps on the bottom side of the map that are relatively easy to invade for your team, and with burrow you can make it an easy 5v4. It has a lot of bushes for Dehaka to easily rotate and collect essence between lanes. Its great. The only downside for Dehaka on DS is that winning the shrine on top also matters quite a bit and while he is not bad in 1v1s, there are good amount of offlaners who can destroy him in a 1v1.
Cursed Hollow
Macro focus, siege giants, a lot of the same as in Dragon Shire. The objective does not split the team the same way as it does on DS but during curses having global is extremely valuable since your team can push very hard on a lane and threaten keep, while the quick rotation speed of Dehaka on sidelines means you are not losing xp and the global means your team isn’t left alone in a 4v5 if they commit everything to defending the push.
Towers of Doom Might be, in my opinion, Dehaka’s strongest map. The presence of global enables a solid amount of invasion plays on enemy sapper camps, and the split objective means that every time an altar spawns on two other sides of the map, Dehaka will be there to make the objective fight 5v4 way before the global-less enemy offlane can do anything about it.
Sky Temple Really, most of the things that can be fitted into DS can also be applied onto Sky Temple aswell. It is slightly worse on Sky because Dehaka struggles a bit on capping temples alone due to low single target damage and conditional sustain but his global is even more important since all structure damage matters on the map, and pushing out a lane can be just as valuable as getting an objective.
Garden of TerrorMostly he is awesome here. Lots of bushes, large size, macro heavy gameplay etc. You just want to make sure you have another hero in team who is effective at taking camps because Dehaka is not one, and camps are what often decide Garden games. At least he is very good at clearing the enemy camps.
A tier maps
Infernal Shrines The map has lots of bushes, 3 lanes to soak and moderate macro relevance. One thing that makes Dehaka still a star on the map is his ability to drag shaman camps into towers to instantly clear them. Just because I took him lower than on some others doesn’t mean he isn’t great here, the reason I didn’t put him in S was mostly because he is not the most effective in clearing the extremely impactful objective alone, nor is he very good at dealing with it if enemy gets it.
Where Dehaka really sucks is when he has to fight on an open lane with no bushes, to defend against a punisher or such.
Tomb of the Spider Queen Historically this is a bit controversial take due to the map’s small size. Which is true, it is against Dehaka’s global value. it doesn’t mean though it isn’t immensely relevant on the map, since it can be used to prevent the good old boss cap strategy of taking bot camp, and moving to boss as enemy has to deal with a siege camp.
Aside from that, due to its small size however Dehaka can stack essence extremely quickly, and the quantity of bushes makes him a danger everywhere on the map even without his global.
Dehaka is a very hard to gank offlane, which means gems collected by Dehaka are far more safe than on some other popular offlaners.
B tier maps
Battlefield of Eternity
Not the best map for him, but playable. The objective sucks the same way as it does on IS and it is more early game heavy. The distance between lanes makes essence management much more difficult.Things he does do well on the map though is defending shaman camps, which is more valuable here than any other map in my opinion. The middle of the map is also riddled with bushes, giving him a ton of opportunities to position properly and getting good drags in. The distance between lanes does also mean the bottom part of the team can play much more aggressively for camps since the global does threaten a constant 5v4.
Alterac Pass
I hate playing Dehaka on Alterac, but it could be worse. Little amount of bushes makes rotating extremely hard and dragging camps to towers is often of low value. Additionally, taking camps is of a high value and Dehaka really does not do it well on Alterac. The one thing Alterac has going for him is its large size, and the few bushes it has are around objectives so he can still sidepush and join for a fight.
Braxis Holdout Dehaka typically isn’t awesome due to the difficulties of gaining essence, relevance of winning point on top lane and lack of siege giant/shamans. The bonus is, if you do win the point its fairly easy to win the bottom point aswell due to using global after bullying the enemy offlaner away from point.
D tier maps
Volskaya Industries
No bushes, small size, mostly item based camps. Unless Dehaka is the only hero you play, I’d not recommend picking him here.
Base Kit tips
Drag [Q] - This ability is what most often will win games. Its the longest CC on a basic ability and it has a reposition to boot. Unfortunately, it is also one of the harder parts of playing the hero. Some tips regarding its use;
- While dragging someone, you can still auto attack even if it hurts your movement slightly. In 1v1 it is pretty much always worth it though since good part of your 1v1 damage does come from AAs.
- Drag cannot be cancelled, and you cannot cast E while dragging. Hence recommended to not do reckless drags on low hp while your E is still up.
Mercs
As I eluded earlier, you don’t have to be the one to deal the actual damage to mercs. You can also drag them into towers and forts for a faster clear. The damage of the drag isn’t high, 160 at a base (159% of one AA), but it is big enough that if you know you are going to base to get mana or you won’t be needing it any time soon, using drag for damage on PvE does increase your clear speed. It is mana intensive, which is why I excluded its use to the two scenarios above.
Landing drags on heroes - You don’t have to fish for one. If you can start a fight with a clutch drag that is great. But usually if every other hero is just posturing, that drag is going to get interrupted quickly. It can be good to wait for a bit of chaos to happen so people are less focused on the Dehaka and will have harder time dodging it.
- In general, targets that are walking towards you are the ones that are easiest to hit. If someone is dancing sideways in front of me, I dont have to use it yet.
- Holding the drag: Sometimes not pressing Q when you have it up is more potent than pressing it. It happens quite often on offlane and in teamfights that people are so focused on dodging drag that they are walking in circles in awkward positions eating tons of damage. At some point, after they have taken enough they have to walk away in a straight line - which is when they are an easy grab.
- Use your E. I’ll go over more of this in talents, but you can set up an easy drag on anyone with the use of the level 4 talent ‘’Lurker Strain’’.
- While dragging someone, you can still auto attack even if it hurts your movement slightly. In 1v1 it is pretty much always worth it though since good part of your 1v1 damage does come from AAs.
Dark Swarm
- Mostly used for waveclear, but it does have a few other applications. Post 13 it also becomes your damage and your slow, and you have to use E less for drag setups.
- Against certain heroes like Leoric for instance being able to pass through heir hitbox has some significant advantages. The downside is, you cannot bodyblock while using the ability.
Burrow [E] - A good bit of this one’s utility comes from the level 4 talent.
- If playing without the level 4, this is mostly the panic button to use in order to dodge a skill shot, or to buy time for your trait to regenerate you to higher health. Your W does deal damage while you are burrowed, so you can use it while clearing waves in order to dodge spell power reductions from Blaze Qs and such.
Essence Collection [D]
- Easily the most overlooked and most screwed up part about playing Dehaka. Using 50 essence restores about 61% of Dehaka’s max health. Going to fight without it is like entering one with 40% hp and the healer cannot even patch it up.
- One should never look to enter a fight unless absolutely necessary without essence. If an objective is on its way, it's better to not just directly trade into the enemy offlane just so you are not forced to use your trait before a fight. If I am low on health, I rather use HS and then burrow to the objective (or waddle back to lane first to force the enemy to play aggro on the objective).
- One minion wave gives 14 essence. Even if forced to use essence, if the map is small enough there is a shot you can collect it back before it's too late. Three waves are usually sufficient, getting you to 42 essence. If you are not double soaking in the early game (often due to having a bad lane match up or having to clear camps on a big map), around 1:30 you can use your essence and then unbind the ability until the next objective.
Brushstalker [Z] - The other easily screwed up part about the hero is the use of global. It is not often correct to use it to get to a lane in order to soak, you have your movement speed for that. When used aggressively though, you can use it to start a teamfight from a position where your drags are much harder to deal with.
- Even when not used, it provides value. As long as your Z is up, the enemy cannot reliably invade your camps (or well, it isn’t smart), you can force the enemy to play objectives more aggressively than they would want to by remaining on side soak before burrowing.
- Situationally it can be used like this if there is a large wave and you know there won’t be an objective coming in the next 70s and the camps are down (especially relevant on ToD) but generally I’d advice learning to save burrows for aggressive usage, and shifting rest of the playstyle to be more macro focused.
- Using Z does remove you from the game for 1.5 seconds allowing you to cleanse most debuffs and avoid Chromie loop if your E is off CD.
- There is an odd interaction that allows Dehaka to clear Chromie loops and avoiding Dots without committing: If you self cast Brushstalker while in a bush, or click the bush location within your own unit radius, the ability is not put on cooldown when used but it still puts you in stasis / removes harmful effects. This is a fairly niche trick but useful when it comes up. I am not sure at this point if this borders bug abuse since blizzard is fairly unclear on what are intended interactions and part of the balance, looking at you Samuro and hearthstone teleport tricks.
Talents / Builds breakdown
To start off, different builds have different values on different levels of play. The build I pick most of the time is immensely powerful in diamond, master and GM SL aswell as competitive. It is equally powerful in lower ones, but some other builds also become better there (Such as the W build). The % mentions are just my rough estimates on how often I pick a certain talent.
The builds:
Standard/Recommended build: 3/1/1/1/1/2/1
BeginneLow SL build:1/3/3/2/2/2
Situational Braxis/Alterac build: 2/X/X/1/3/2/1
Level 1
Enduring Swarm - 2%
- This is a good talent. It does make Dehaka a lot more durable, it gives him extra duration on W which has some synergy with Hero Stalker.
- The downside is that it cripples his rotations and lethality of his burrow flanks somewhat substantially in comparison to Enhanced Agility. As it is, Dehaka is extremely durable already and while extra sustain never hurts, there is a point where other aspects should be considered.
Enhance Agility - 96%
- On every map where Dehaka is great, this is awesome. It enables all the rotations between lanes for easy essence gathering, it has great synergy with the 13 talent due to increased duration. In teamfights, this is what allows Dehaka to easily get into positions where drags are easy to land.
- Completing it early is nice, but it isn’t something to be too fussed about since the baseline version of it is already great.
Tissue Regeneration - 2%
- Technically the best for pure 1v1
- I consider this a bit of a training wheels talent, since it does make gaining essence much more easier and the increased. I do pick it still on Braxis just for the increased lane sustain to cover for lack of essence from double soaking. It is not bad on BoE either but Enhanced Agility is also really good on it for the amount of bushes.
- Has synergy with Primal Rage due to increased cap on essence.
Level 4 Lurker Strain - 95%
- This might be the most powerful talent on Dehaka, bar none. Not just the level 4. To paint a comparison, imagine getting E.T.C W with a massive slow, greater knockback, higher damage and stealth from just a level 4 talent. However, it is also the hardest talent to play since it helps you in no way in essence management and it is more complex in its use than the others
- Works extremely well against heroes that are weak against displacements and is very insufferable for several tanks such as Diablo and Varian. If there is ever a moment when Diablo sees a good wall stun, Dehaka can use E preemptively and just stay hidden for your team to reposition to a better spot. If Diablo charges, his Q (or if you miss it, his E) gets interrupted and he will be slowed with no mobility in a bad spot, ready to be dragged to his death. Into Diablo it has extra value since the stealth makes it so he cannot use Q on you.
- Onto heroes like Imperius and Thrall, it's good to use whenever they press their limited time window damage abilities (E’s on both of them). The displacement tends to ruin their effective teamfight window. Even getting a spear through to anyone as Imperius gets complicated. To Yrel, you can use it to interrupt jumps easily even if she is positioning behind minions. This is also one of the few ways to somewhat reliably get drags on the more elusive divers.
- The other good thing about it is that it really makes your kill pressure less reliant on drags. If you have Enhanced Agility you can often position yourself in places easily where you can knock one target towards your team while moving everyone else away. It is extremely potent with heroes like Stukov and Malfurion with powerful consistent AoE effects you can knock them into. On BoE, immortal stuns become your best friend.
- Akin to Mighty Gust, the daze duration as the opponent has no control over their character is always the same regardless of the distance travelled. It is not terribly long duration knockback, and characters have a few frames to press a button that would move them from the drag. However, if Dehaka does push them against the wall, even the slow missile speed of drag is fast enough to confirm a drag to land on any target before they can teleport away.
Hero Stalker - 3%
- A great talent, shame about its tier. This is often what wins games in lower ranks where teamfights last for a long time and using this alongside Symbiosis can grant Dehaka several health bars in a fight. This talent makes the hero a lot easier to play.
- While it is great in lower ranks, there is a bit of an unfortunate side effects to this; Very often when I see Dehaka’s play with this talent the idea that they can get essence without soaking leads them into not soaking. You still should not arrive to fights with no essence because they can still do a blow up before you can get enough of it, and you should still make use of your global presence and soak sidelines. The talent makes some bad habits far less punished creating the illusion that the other options are worse when they are tried.
- Great into Samuro for fairly obvious reasons
One-Who-Collects - 2%
- Used to be my go-to until Lurker Strain was buffed. The effect makes gaining essence much easier and allows making trades on offlane. I do recommend this one if you are learning to play the hero and managing essence isn’t yet your strong suit. It teaches less bad habits than Hero Stalker and gives him some extra merc clear which is nice.
- On Alterac I listed this as a situational pick since you are doing a lot of offsoaking and potentially have to be the one to split to defend the camps as an objective spawns. Enhanced Agility is not recommended on the map so its much harder to get into good positions for your E knockbacks in the early game. Lurker Strain is still very good on the map.
Level 7
Feeding Frenzy - 98%
- Drag is insanely powerful as it is, and this makes it so it becomes even stronger and more spammable. The extra 0.5 second duration is a long time to suffer when you are being dragged into a worse position. The CD starts immediately after landing a drag so you can already prep your next drag during the old one with AAs.
- If you miss a drag, you can hit walls and minions to get it back up faster. Without this talent I’d recommend skipping trying to do fish kills with a drag entirely since missing it gets heavily punished and confines you to being a standing duck for 14 seconds. This also applies to playing several lanes, you should always look to AA whatever you can safely to reset drag CD as quickly as possible.
Symbiosis - 2%
- The core talent of the W build. It makes your W spammable which has natural synergy with all the other W talents. Downside is, it doesn’t actually reduce the W’s mana cost and spamming W can quickly drain your mana bar.
- The upside of this build is that it gives Dehaka great damage numbers in games where focus fire is less precedent, it gives him much greater sustain which also matters more in games with less focus fire and it makes him reasonably useful with little skill involved. Its great into melee comps but…in order for it to be really good you need Hero Stalker and Lurker Strain also happens to be extremely powerful into melee comps. I do recommend this for beginners and plat and below SL.
- Into Samuro it is almost a necessity in order to be able to sustain the pressure, which is where I still lock it.
Paralyzing Enzymes - 0%
- This is terrible. Dehaka has reasonably good shot at holding on to gambit stacks but the damage over time in team fights is rarely more useful than the extra duration & fishing potential of Feeding Frenzy and less impactful in 1v1s than the CDR.
Level 10
Isolation - 100%
- High skill high reward skill shot.
- 3s silence and slow is often as good as a kill when used in a right spot. One easy way to land one is right after landing a drag when they are close and have to run away, but into some heroes I’d recommend the opposite. Especially into brightwing. If she doesn’t die during the drag she won’t die at all due to blinking away. While the drag stun and silence will mostly overlap, the isolation’s vision removal does have a side effect of being unable to press Z or Blink Heal for 6 seconds. The 30% slow on the isolation also makes drags a lot easier to land if you do manage to secure an isolation.
- The ability does have a high delay and moderate travel speed, which is why its often great as a follow up. Alternatively if you have trust on your aim, using Z to join a fight as your team is engaging and going straight for the Rehgar from flank for instance to put him of a 6s timer of no Ancestral is fairly effective if your team lacks the tools to kill a target before an ancestral would land.
Adaptation - 0%
- Too slow of an effect just to add more sustain to already a very high sustain hero.
- Low ranks and for beginners this can be great since the focus fire will often be more forgiving, allowing this to trigger on time.
Level 13 Ferocious Stalker - 93%
- Massive power spike.
- This allows your W to instantly clear waves. It allows you to do big enough damage to threaten a solo kill on a flank, and it gives you access to very easy slow so you don’t have to use other tools to confirm drags. If you are clearing waves, this it is almost always worth the detour to move to a bush and trigger this. Assuming you have Enhanced Agility that is. The talent isn’t worthless and sometimes even worth picking without it, but it becomes much more consistent with it.
Primal Swarm - 4 %
- If I am playing the hero stalker build , I might consider this. But on top of Samuro, it gains a bit of extra value against heroes that naturally have armor like Deathwing. It sucks enough to play Dehaka into DW but this makes it a bit more tolerable.
Primal Rage - 3%
- Need to still win point on Braxis? This is awesome. If you are in BoE and your team decided once again to draft 0 race and you don’t have enhanced agility? Great. But it is often the option to pick when you are in a situation you should not be in to begin with.
- Has synergy with Tissue Regen due to having a higher cap on the AA damage
Level 16
Elongated Tongue - 0%
- Potentially good,
- Most of the value of this talent comes from the fact it is not meta and people misjudge the drag range. The issue is that Drag has fairly slow missile speed and usually isn’t very reliable on max range to begin with - and it is even more unreliable on a higher range. Drag is still a powerful enough ability that this talent cannot be called bad.
Pack Leader - 0%
- A fairly worthless option.
- Has synergies with the AA build but it does also have some issues. You need to use bushes to get value out of this, and if you are able to do so you often want Enhanced Agility. Meanwhile the AA build is fairly reliant on Primal Rage that kind of wants Tissue Regen instead of agility to function. The temporary AA speed increase is fairly low, and while the armor is nice we don’t need to pump the hero’s sustain upwards much more.
Tunneling Claws - 100%
- An insane talent. It makes Dehaka much harder to kill and near impossible to gank (especially when combined with Lurker Strain). But on top of the defensive elements, the kill potential of being always able to move to a position where the knockback effect of E is just perfect is the greatest draw. My usual sequence when killing a frontliner post 16 often is Drag -> move back -> E to their other side -> knock the kill target back to allies and push everyone else away from helping.
Level 20
Contagion - 99%
- If Isolation is good, up to 5 isolations is also good. Tanks get a nasty habit of trying to peel for their backliners from isolations by blocking them and this puts a stop to that. You don’t need to hit many targets for it to be great, a single isolation effectively puts 1 person out of a fight for 6 seconds. If you hit it on even 2, you are likely to win the fight if you do it early and they cannot all just back away.
Change is Survival - 0%
- If you pick Adaptation, this is reasonably good.
Essence Claws - 1%
- The effect is nice, but usually just nice isn’t enough to compete with a threat to silence an entire enemy team.
- You do have other slows as it is, and requiring the AA targets to be heroes makes it fairly inconsistent to use. I pick this mostly if we are ending the game and Isolation happens to be on cooldown.
Apex Predator - 0%
- Just a worse version of Epic Mount of Falstad, and even that has fallen off the meta. The reason why Epic Mount is still situationally viable at places is that the talent is on a hero that is not vulnerable when threatening a core with no bushes around, one that has solid siege damage on structures and the global can be used to go to core aswell as for moving out of there.
- Meanwhile Dehaka cannot really do the same shenanigans as Falstad to the same extent even with this talent. He can move only away from the core, and he is extremely vulnerable to getting rotated there if the enemy has any interrupts to Z.
Laning tips
Do note that these estimations expect two equally skilled players, and playing with the talents listed above. Most of them do not directly improve the 1v1, so experiences may vary.
Favored match ups - Blaze
- Malthael (post 7)
- Chen (post 7)
- Thrall*
- Illidan*
- Gazlowe*
- Imperius (Post 4)
Fairly even match ups - Leoric*
- Artanis*
- Yrel*
- Sonya*
Unfavored match ups - Murky*
- Rexxar
- Samuro (Can be made into even with adjustments)
- Hogger
- Deathwing (No chance)
Thrall - Thrall does not have really high clear, and his damage window is heavily limited by his windfury. If you use E and knock him back when he does windfury, or drag him, he will often be forced to tank minions while trading negatively against you.
Imperius - Once again, the key is the use of E. His damage window is often limited to his Q + E window. If you knock him back as soon as he uses E, he loses his sustain. After 7 it gets much easier since you don’t just have to rely on your burrow to deny it.
Illidan - For all his mobility, Illidan is fairly easy to drag. And I am not saying to try to drag him as he is attacking and jumping about, save it for when he uses Q. The windup on the ability is long enough that you can land if by aiming it on your other side as soon as he uses it.
- If he does not use Q, you can make the drags easier to land by backing off and forcing him to run into you for an easier target.
—--
Leoric - Every second drain can be canceled with E and you just need to dodge half of them to come out ahead. Leo E has 10s CD while Burrow has 17s post level 4 so the time window is also limited for Leo to land the drain.
- As I alluded to earlier, using Swarm during this timer to stack with his hitbox makes it hard for Leo to land a drain, but admittedly it is not the easiest thing to pull off as Dehaka either.
Artanis - Artanis' shields and Dehaka's low single target damage do not go well together. In order for Dehaka to do well on the lane, they need to count the CD left on Artanis shield and aim drags to land when he cannot get a shield up.
- Artanis cannot really recover from taking big hits due to lack of self healing mechanics, so while Dehaka is outtraded in the short run over longer period he can be taken down. Just don't trade with him right after his shields reset.
Yrel - This is a match up where both need to play smart. Yrel can deny Dehaka’s clear by timing a D + W as soon as Dehaka presses Dark Swarm, and Dehaka can deny Yrel’s clear by using E and Q to interrupt jumps and Q casts
- E does have a mini stun to it so it does interrupt all the casts. The match up really comes down to who bothers the other more on the clear. Both of the two have fairly scuffed single target damage so the wave management is usually what makes the difference in clear
Sonya - You can technically deny all her healing and clear if you are good enough with drags.
- Her hitbox is fairly small on bruiser standards (only 0.75 - for sake of comparison, Dehaka’s is 1.0 and Leoric's is 0.81) with extra movement speed and she can do the same to your drags as you can do to Leoric by spinning on top of your hitbox. In a pinch the E also does interrupt her spin.
- If she picks Wrath you are done 1v1’ing.
—------
Murky - I am not trolling when I say this but a good murky is the bane of Dehaka on lane. Dehaka is very prone to getting kited by slows and his low single target damage doesn’t really put a dent on Murky’s hp regen, and he clears the wave slower than a murky does.
As per usual, hopefully someone got something out of this. It has been a while since I written my last write up on bruisers. If there are any other particular bruisers people would want to see me make a write up on, do mention it. (I had to repost this due to reddit markdown acting stupid).

2023.06.01 22:18 GenWolffang Standoffs Submission Page: The D'arby Gambling House
A few years ago, the D'arby Casino was Alice and busseling, until a couple Stand users ran amok and not only tore down the casino, but made off with nearly all the riches. Now Daniel J. D'arby, older of the D'arby brothers, has now reopened a new location, much smaller than before, but all the danger that was with it...
In order to participate:
You must have an existing Stand on the Reddit page, complete with ability, user and stats. Must be a legitimate Stand, so no "Joke" Stands. (In regards to the Potential Stat, any arguments surrounding this Stat will be monitored and must be cleared by a mod)
The Stand must have been made prior to the start of the tournament. This is to keep away "battle built" Stands that were specifically designed to win the specific battle.
You must link the page of the Stand in the comment section below within the set days before submissions end. Any submission passed those days will not be considered.
Post may not be an Art post, as these types of posts win through popularity rather than substance. Art posts can be modified to text posts, but cannot link to the Art post.
Post cannot come from submissions to the weekly Stand contest of that time, to keep both fair.
The correlation between Stats and description of said stat will also be monitored to show both are consistent with one another.
One post per submission.
The rules go as follow:
All participates will be divided into 6 groups. These groups will be then placed in 1 of 6 games for all of them to play. The first game and the assigned group are chosen randomly. Once in a group, you will battle agaisnt them, switching groups each round you progress. These games are:
Blackjack:
https://bicyclecards.com/how-to-play/blackjack/ Roulette:
https://www.mastersofgames.com/rules/roulette-rules.htm Pool Table
https://blattbilliards.com/blogs/news/8-ball-pool-rules-and-terms 75 Ball Bingo
https://www.newbingosites.co/articles/75-ball-bingo/ Dominoes (rules will change at # go down)
https://mexicantrain.com/blog/beginner-guide-rules.html Darts 301
https://shotdarts.com/blogs/discovea-starter-for-5-basic-dart-games-you-should-know Each round, all players within a game will battle it out to determine who will likely win that game the most. A poll will be set for everyone to vote who they think will win. The one with the least amount of votes will be eliminated.
After each round, the groups will move to a different game from the list above, moving downward. When it comes to the final round, all participants still around will be brought together for one final game. While this game will be secret, I'm sure you can guess what it is.
Do what you must to be the one to win it all! Of course, no killing or maiming is allowed, as that's a quick disqualify. However, there are other ways to achieve victory:
Cheating: Using your stand to gain an advantage.
Sabatoge: Sometimes the best way to win is to make sure others lose.
Snitching: While all stands will be unknown to each other initially, if you are able to give a plausible reason to accuse someone, you can sick the dealers on them.
Note that each dealer (me) is trained by D'arby and know just how to spot the use of Stands. If questioned about cheating, do your best to make excuses, divert blame or straight lie. However, if caught cheating, the punishment is 10 votes removed from that round's final vote. So be very sneaky!
Since D'arby wants assurance in winning, all future seeing and probability altering Stands will be banned.
Requiem/Heaven stands are banned for general overpowered nature.
Post Mordem stands are barred due to lack of users. (Subject to change in future tournaments)
Stands with sub-Stands are barred, as it may be unfair to fight more than one Stand. (Subject to change in future tournaments)
ACT and Time stands are barred.
Users must be living, human users. In the case were a user is given but no details about them are shown whatsoever, the personality of Koiche Hirose will be the default setting, as he is known to be a reliable guy. (Subject to change in future tournaments).
If there is anything missing from this please let me know in the comments. Until then, good luck!

2023.06.01 15:35 CaspianX2 eShopperReviews May 2023 Wrap-Up
eShopperReviews May 2023 Wrap-Up
In the month of May, I reviewed 39 Nintendo Switch games (while buying 27), meaning that I made progress in my goal of reviewing all my games... though mainly because I was too busy playing Zelda to bother buying all that much (for new folks here, 14 games is a pretty small number for me).
All told, my Nintendo Switch titles reviewed to titles owned ratio is now 2239/3131.
Now that I'm making it a point to track the number of subscribers, I'll also point out that this subreddit is at 8878 subscribers. A little bump over the prior month’s numbers, but I’ll take it. For those who are new to this subreddit, hi! Welcome! I hope you enjoy your time here!
.
Patreon Updates On the Patreon side of things, we had 12 patrons kindly donating in the month of May, and their contributions will be recognized in reviews throughout the month of June. If you’re curious to see the names, you can check them out below.
The games Patrons voted on in April for me to review in May were a tie between Lil Gator Game and Melatonin, with Rô winning the budget game vote. I ended up reviewing Lil Gator Game and I’ll talk a bit more about that farther down, but as for
Rô, this is a pretty sub-par and mediocre Platformer, but one with a saving grace of only costing $0.50. So, I...
guess it’s probably worth that, though definitely don’t expect anything especially great or even all that good.
Okay, so those are the reviews from April’s votes, but what games won the May votes? Well, the normal patron vote resulted in another tie (four ways this time!) between A Space for the Unbound, Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly, Fashion Police Squad, and NeverAwake (
Edit: and Power Wash Simulator! That got a late vote and I neglected to mention it!). As always, I’m the tiebreaker, and you’ll find out which of these games I’m reviewing sometime in the month of June. As for the budget game vote, the clear winner this month was JarataireRPG, which I will also review in the month of June.
Okay, on to new votes up for
this month!
.
Monthly Patreon Votes - June For this month's patron vote for those who donate $5 or more on Patreon, I’m focusing on games releasing specifically in the month of June.
The list of games to vote for in the Patron vote are as follows:
Master Detective Archives: Rain Code Samba De Amigo: Party Central Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection Rune Factory 3 Special Whichever game gets the most votes will receive a review in July.
As for the All-Patron Budget Vote for those who donate $1 or more, I’m looking at yet even more budget games released in early 2023. As per usual, all games in this vote are normally priced in the eShop at $2 or under.
The selections for the second vote are as follows:
Bubble Bird Cabin Escape: Alice’s Story Galaxy Revo: Remake Powers of Hex Truck Climb Racing Your Future As always, whichever game earns the most votes by the end of May will be reviewed in June!
If you want to join in these votes, head over to
the eShopperReviews Patreon page and make a donation - again, to be clear, donating any dollar amount allows you to partake in the All-Patron Budget Vote, and donating $5 or more enables you to participate in both votes!
.
Podcasts & Game Streams Once again, Patreon subscribers can hear me discussing the last month’s highlights in a monthly podcast. I should note that these podcasts are made available to patrons first, but if you’re not a patron, you won’t be completely left out - I’ll have the podcast made available to everyone on YouTube a week or so after Patreon patrons get it. However, if you’re curious to hear the podcast right when it releases, please consider heading over to the
Patreon page and making a donation! In this month’s podcast, Jenn and I talk about the recent announcements canceling Overwatch II’s PvE campaign content, the recent roadblocks Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard has faced, and we talk at length about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. And as always, we also discuss the last month’s reviews that I deemed to be the best games, worst games, and hidden gems. No streams in May. Is this something people here want to see more of? Please speak up in the comments if so!
.
New Monthly... Feature? Not sure what to call this... Retro Friday? Well, the short version is, the first Friday of each month, I’m going to review a handful of classic games that have been brought to Nintendo Switch. Arcade Archives, ACA NEOGEO, Johnny Turbo, and so on. This way, I can make a regular thing out of reviewing these retro games without them taking over the subreddit. And of course, because tomorrow is a Friday, you’ll be seeing the first group of these tomorrow!
.
eShopperReviews Subreddit Updates On the subreddit side of things, no theme weeks in May (unless you want to count the week I took off to play more Zelda). I did update the Wiki by transferring over
the page for Open-World games to the Wiki.
I also added new reviews for
May 2023 releases on Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Game Boy Advance App, and in turn I updated the page for the
Game Boy Advance App to reflect these.
Once again, no new Bad Behavior Profiles this month. At some point I’ll have to get back to updating these, but... Zelda...
Okay, I think that's it for major events on eShopperReviews in May, now onto some review highlights! Here's my picks for the most noteworthy games I reviewed in May 2023. As always, these are not necessarily games that came out this May, just what I was able to review this last month.
Okay, so on to May’s highlights:
.
The Best
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - It cannot possibly be a surprise that this game tops my list of best games I reviewed this month. I took the unusual step of taking a week off from writing reviews for eShopperReviews
after publishing my review for this game, just so I would have more time to play this game. And even now, as I write this, I’m feeling myself tempted to procrastinate writing these words just a bit more so I can have more time to play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This is one of the greatest Zelda games ever made. This is one of the greatest Nintendo Switch games ever made. This is one of the greatest Action-RPGs ever made. This is one of the greatest videogames ever made, full-stop. I could gush on and on and on here, but I feel like I already did plenty of that in my review, so if you want to find out more, please go and read that, and if my joy at playing this game isn’t clear by that point, you can feel free to ask me more about my thoughts on the game here. But, barring that, I’ll just go ahead and move on...
Octopath Traveler II - This is an outstanding throwback to the Turn-Based JRPG greats of old much in the same way that its predecessor was, with even more nuanced excellent gameplay, great writing, fantastic characters, and compelling story. My only real complaint here is that once again this game fails to properly incorporate all of the stories of its eight protagonists into one cohesive whole. However, despite this flaw, this is still an excellent game well worth playing, and a must-have for fans of the genre.
Lil Gator Game - Take the core gameplay formula of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, shrink it down to be much smaller in scope, make it more kid- and casual-friendly, and make it one of the most absolutely adorable games you have ever played, and you’ll get something like Lil Gator Game, a joyful romp that had me smiling the entire time i was playing it.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn - This remake of one of the formative games of the Tactics-style branch of the Strategy-RPG genre is still a strong entry in that same genre, with excellent gameplay and a great story. I just wish that this game wasn’t forced into being so restrictive and linear due to its level caps.
Sonic Frontiers - Sonic Frontiers is absolutely riddled with problems. It’s absurdly unpolished and has some major issues. And yet, it still manages to be a joy to play. Sonic’s first steps into an Open-World (or “Open Zone”, if you take Sega’s nomenclature) are messy and broken, yet still extremely enjoyable.
.
The Worst
.cat Milk,
Axolotl. and
Rafa’s World - All three of these games are pretty bad Platformers, but what makes these even worse is that you can get all three together in the
Rafa's World + Axolotl + .cat Milk bundle for a mere $0.75, a fraction of even the best
sale price that any one of these games sells for individually. Should you buy the bundle? Well, no, I don’t think these games are very good at
any price, but you
absolutely shouldn’t buy these games individually, unless you like getting ripped off.
Loot Box Simulator - RPG Anime Girls,
Loot Box Simulator - Crimson Fire. and
Loot Box Simulator - Heroes of the Dark Age - Another trio I’m including together due to how similar these games all are to each other. It’s bad enough that the gameplay in this game seems pointless, random, and nonsensical, not to mention boring. You’re literally just picking one of four options and hoping it’s the best one without any way of knowing until after you select it... then doing that again. But to make things even worse, the point of the game is to earn points to unlock the game’s artwork, which you cannot do anything with, even zoom in. Go to any anime art website and you’ll likely get more value out of your free browsing than you will get out of buying these games.
Prof. Miyamoto's Soroban & Flash Anzan - So this game is just simple math flash cards in digital form. It’s confusingly put-together, simple, and boring, but I suppose some parents might find some use for this. Well, they would, if it didn’t want to charge players admission for each additional time you want to use the game after an initial introduction period. You know, kind of like how dumb parents warned their kids that drug dealers would give them a free hit to get you hooked before cranking up the cost when you go back for more... except no one is ever,
ever going to get hooked on this, and if you really want more of this... just get some flash cards and ditch this game.
Airport Flight Administrator Simulator & Air Traffic-Sky Airplane Sim Plane Games - This touchscreen-only minigame collection ties together multiple minigames that are often only extremely loosely-connected to airports. However, the real issue with this game is that the minigames are exceedingly simple and the game gives you no reason to play them more than once. Or, if you’re wise enough to not buy this game, never.
.
Hidden Gems
Plague Inc: Evolved - Plague Inc was popularized on mobile devices a decade ago, before we had to contend with an
actual worldwide pandemic, with an expanded version of the game hitting consoles one after another. The Nintendo Switch version of the game lacks the multiplayer of other console versions, but otherwise this is the same excellent unique global Simulation game where players must guide their virus to try to kill every last person on Earth. Dark? Sure, but immensely fun too.
Crazy BMX World - When making a Compilation of all the superb Bike Rider DX games from the Nintendo 3DS, I’m frustrated that they named this collection something completely different so it wasn’t clear that’s what this is. However, that irritation aside, this is an excellent trio of Auto-Runner games at a very tempting $3 price.
Galak-Z: The Void: Deluxe Edition - There was a Free-To-Play version of this game on Nintendo Switch at one point, but it is no longer available. That’s okay, because this version of the game is quite good, with a solid presentation, good gameplay, and some compelling Roguelike mechanics.
Some Distant Memory - This game combines Graphic Adventure and Visual Novel elements to tell two stories - one taking place on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and one where these characters are using AI to recreate events that happened in the household they’re digging through amidst the ruins of our Earth. Both stories are surprisingly compelling, with great characters. If a post-apocalyptic story sounds interesting to you, this game is well worth a look.
Jet Set Knights - This is a solid Arcade-style Action-Platformer with some good gameplay that’s slightly marred by poor level design, but it’s still well worth a try for players who enjoy games like Towerfall... though this game is nowhere near as good as Towerfall.
.
Anyway, that covers pretty much all of the big stuff for May. I hope you've all enjoyed reading what I have to say!

The drill program, which began in March, is ongoing with three rigs currently operating. Nine holes have been completed and submitted for assay in the area immediately to north of the Dolphin Zone where the mineralization remains open and is projecting to surface. Assays have been received for three of the nine holes submitted and are reported below. The current program is designed to expand and infill the current mineral resource estimate ( February 2023 ) which using a 0.45 g/ t Au cut off and a $1,792 gold price is 12.01 million ounces at 0.92 g/t Au (407,544,000 tonnes) (indicated) and 7.7 million ounces at 0.85 g/t (282,303,000 tonnes) (inferred). https://preview.redd.it/xdgciofxke3b1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=8b79761e5a4360a01bac2fc0078de31477dd939a In addition to ongoing drilling to the north, drilling will also test a significant gold in soil geochemical anomaly that extends 1.5 km to the west. The goal of this additional drilling is to potentially increase the current resource area beyond its current size of 1.3 km x 600 m 147.3m including 1.43 g/t over 88.7m The 2023 drill program initially focussed on the northern extension of the Dolphin/Cleary. Drilling over the coming months will see additional drilling to the west to follow up on the encouraging results received in GS2241 and to test the over 1.5km gold long gold in soil geochemical anomaly. Holes GS2301 & GS2302 are some of the northern most holes drilled in the Dolphin Zone. GS2301 is a 400 metre step out to the north and intersected 56.7m of 1.02 g/t Au (Section 478800E). Hole GS2302 intersected 200.8 metres grading 0.81 g/t Au including 51.8 metres grading 1.04 g/t Au. GS2303 is 350 metre step out to the north and intersected 42.4m grading 0.65 g/t (Section 478900E). Plan Maps and Sections: https://freegoldventures.com/site/assets/files/6268/478800e.pdf https://freegoldventures.com/site/assets/files/6268/478900e.pdf https://freegoldventures.com/site/assets/files/6268/goldensummit_dolphin-cleary_resource_drilling_western_a.pdf Saddle Zone https://preview.redd.it/p4bxmpgxke3b1.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77871d568d391bb78babb9633c312208dff8601b Located four km east of the current resource area lies the Saddle Zone, which hosts the American Eagle historical underground producer. It produced 60,000 ounces at a grade of 1.6 oz/ton. Later this summer one rig will test the potential for broad zones of mineralization surrounding the high-grade veins. This is similar to the very successful approach taken in the Dolphin Cleary Area during the 2020 – 2022 program. Based on historical mapping, there are numerous gold occurrences with significant veining in the target area which represents significant potential for discovery. The Saddle Zone has a 2.5 km by 1.0 km target area that has not been systematically drill tested. This makes it an excellent target for possible additional resources. Golden Summit has already demonstrated the potential to host significant resources. The 2023 resource update vaulted Golden Summit into one of the largest undeveloped gold resources in North America A sample quality control/quality assurance program was implemented. Drill cores were cut in half using a diamond saw, with one-half placed in sealed bags for preparation and subsequent geochemical analysis by ALS Chemex. All assays were performed by ALS Global Ltd., with sample preparation conducted at the ALS facility in Fairbanks, Alaska , with subsequent studies conducted primarily using its Vancouver and Reno laboratories. Core samples were prepared using the PREP-31BY package in ALS's facility. Each core sample is crushed to better than 70 % passing a 2 mm (Tyler 9 mesh, US Std. No.10) screen. A split of 1kg is taken and pulverized to better than 85 % passing a 75-micron (Tyler 200 mesh, US Std. No. 200) screen; a portion of this pulverized split is digested by Four Acid and analyzed via ICP-AES (method code ME-ICP61). Fire Assay analyzes all samples with an AAS finish, method code Au-AA23 (30g sample size) and over 10 g/t are automatically assayed using a FA Grav method, Au-GRAV21. Additional Au screening is performed using ALS's Au- SCR24 method; select samples are dry-screened to 100 microns. A duplicate 50g fire assay is conducted on the little fraction and an assay on the entire oversize fraction. Total Au content, individual assays, and weight fractions are reported. Analytical and assay procedures are conducted in ALS's North Vancouver and Reno facilities. A QA/QC program included laboratory and field standards inserted every ten samples. Blanks are inserted at the start of the submittal, and at least one blank every 25 standards, with additional blanks inserted following samples of visible gold. See Freegold's Annual Information Form for the year ended December 31st, 2021 , filed under Freegold's profile at [www.sedar.com*](http://www.sedar.com) , for a detailed discussion of the risk factors associated with Freegold's operations. On January 30, 2020 , the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global health emergency. Reactions to the spread of COVID-19 continue to lead to, among other things, significant restrictions on travel, business closures, quarantines, and a general reduction in economic activity. While there has been a reduction in these effects in recent months, the continuation and re-introduction of significant restrictions, business disruptions, and related financial impact, and the duration of any such disruptions, cannot be reasonably estimated at this time. The risks to Freegold of such public health crises also include risks to employee health and safety and a slowdown or temporary suspension of operations in geographic locations impacted by an outbreak. Such public health crises, as well as global geopolitical crises, can result in volatility and disruptions in the supply and demand for various products and services, global supply chains, and financial markets, as well as declining trade and market sentiment and reduced mobility of people, all of which could affect interest rates, credit ratings, credit risk, and inflation. As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, Freegold has implemented a COVID management program and established a full-service Camp at Golden Summit to attempt to mitigate risks to its employees, contractors, and community. While the extent to which COVID-19 may impact Freegold is uncertain, it is possible that COVID-19 may have a material adverse effect* on Freegold's business, results of operations, and financial condition. https://preview.redd.it/ik4gyohxke3b1.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ccebd625a537eafca4ada8de90205e2895cc9d4b SOURCE Freegold Ventures Limited View original content to download multimedia: http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/June2023/01/c0098.html https://preview.redd.it/5i0brqixke3b1.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca8545b0de92fabc97853a4002b14f4eef32d82e submitted by Then_Marionberry_259 to Treaty_Creek [link] [comments] |

2023.06.01 08:00 Outside_Ad_9691 [Tinkers Construct 2/3] For those who didn't know: Tinkers Construct lets you get a lot of utility and usefulness out of just ordinary Stone.
When I play games, I sometimes try to make the strongest tools/armobuilds possible out of the cheapest materials possible. This is expecially useful early game, when you want to become very powerful very quickly and you don't have access to more expensive or rarer tools/weapons/armomaterials. This post will teach you how to do that with Tinkers Construct.
Now, there are two versions of Tinkers Construct that I've interacted with: Tinkers Construct 2 and Tinkers Construct 3. I've played lots of 1.12 modpacks, so TiCon 2 is what I'm most familiar with. In contrast, I've only just recently started playing newer modpacks (such as ones for 1.16 and 1.18) so I've only had a small exposure to TiCon 3 and am not
as familiar with it. Anyway, let me start with Tinkers Construct 2:
Tinkers Construct 2 Stone Tips
Here are 5 powerful tips relating to Stone:
- You can mine anything with Stone: You may be thinking, "No you can't! Stone tools can at most mine up to a Block of Iron and that's it." Well, normally that's true, but you can change that. Suppose you've made a Tinkers Pickaxe with a Stone Pickaxe Head. Currently, you only have an Iron Mining Level. But if you combine an Obsidian Sharpening Kit with a piece of Flint in a Tool Station/Tool Forge, you can upgrade your Pickaxe's Mining Level from Iron to Cobalt, which I believe is the highest one possible. This can be easily done from the start of the game.
- Easy repairs: As you can guess, a Stone-headed tool can be repaired with a Stone Sharpening Kit. "Yeah? So what?" Well, we've just made a pickaxe that can mine just about any material in the game. Plus, Tinkers tools don't disappear when broken like vanilla Minecraft tools; when they break, all you have to do it repair it and it works like new. When you combine these three facts together, you can see the whole picture: we have a pickaxe that can mine even Obsidian, that can be repaired whenever it breaks, and can be repaired with Stone or Cobblestone, which are the easiest resources to obtain in bulk in the whole game. And you can craft such a pickaxe early on in the game. Wow, now that's powerful! Anyway, to make repairing even easier, you can carry both a Part Builder and a Sharpening Kit Pattern with you in your inventory as you go mining for easy repairing on the go. I know that you can just make a stack of Stone Sharpening Kits to carry with you in your inventory, but if you're planning on going on extensive mining expeditions, even a stack of Sharpening Kits might not be enough for you (especially with a Stone Pickaxe Head), so you might need to take the whole Part Builder table with you. Anyway, speaking of long mining expeditions, one of the problems you may constantly be dealing with is darkness, because if you're mining for a long time, you may bump into lots of caves, which are usually poorly lit. Luckily, Stone can be used to shed a little light on the situation...
- Stone torches: Normally, Torches are made with a Stick and piece of Coal/Charcoal. But you can make Torches with Cobblestone instead. Firstly, put two Cobblestone pieces in a crafting table, one directly above the other. Now you have 4 Stone Rods. These Stone Rods can be used with Coal/Charcoal in order to make Stone Torches. Stone Torches are like regular Torches, except for their appearance and the recipe required to make them. But why would you want to make Stone Torches? Well, to make regular Torches, you need sticks, which require wood, which requires a tree, which requires you to surface/leave the caves. Now if you're on an extended mining expedition, you are probably too busy to want to stop and go all the way back to the surface just to make Torches. With Stone Torches, you can make Torches with both Stone and Coal - things you can both find in caves - removing the need to return to the surface. Now, having enough light sources to light your way is a must for extended journeys in Minecraft. Another is having enough food to be able to survive the journey in the first place. But how can Stone help us solve this problem?
- Pig Iron lets you eat Stone: Yes, it's true. Well, sort of. Pig Iron is a special alloy that allows you to EAT whatever Tinkers tool has it as one of its components. It's relatively easy to make in the beginning of the game, too. It's an alloy of Iron, Clay and Blood. Blood comes from smelting Rotten Flesh. If you don't have any Rotten Flesh, you can just have a creature walk into your Smeltery and take damage, thus causing it to bleed out a bit right into your Smeltery setup. It could be any creature, like a Pig, Sheep. or even...yourself (but not a Villager though; that just gets you Liquid Emerald, I think). But if you want to jump into your Smeltery and burn yourself alive for a bit, you can at least be safe about it. Firstly, you can have your health at max to be able to survive the damage. Next, you can build your Smeltery to be very shallow. To do this, you first build a 3x3 base. Then you build 4 walls surrounding the outside edge of the base. Each of the walls are 3 blocks long and only 1 block high. With one-block high walls, you can easily jump into/out of the Smeltery at will, to avoid burning yourself alive. Note that there must actually be something in the Smeltery for you to burn yourself with in the first place; you should first burn an Iron Ingot to produce Molten Iron, then jump into the molten metal to be able to be burned by something. Anyway, let me explain how Pig Iron lets you eat Stone. First, you make it so that the Head/main part of your Tinkers tool/weapon is made out of Stone and make one of the other parts out of Pig Iron. Then, whenever you're hold the tool in your main/offhand and lose some of your hunger bar, you begin to automatically start to nibble on your tool until your Hunger bar is topped off. This uses up some durability, of course. But remember, Stone tools are easy to repair. In this manner, you practically have access to infinite food. Now, granted, you only get back 0.5 Hunger per bite (thus allowing you to restore health rather slowly), and this "food" offers no Saturation, but infinite free food is infinite free food, so none of that other stuff matters much (not to me, at least). Now if you TRULY want infinite free food, you can just make a Tinkers tool with 5 Modifiers. This can easily be done by replacing at least some of the tool's parts with Paper to get extra modifiers (or another material that gives extra Modifiers, like Livingwood from the Botania mod). Then you can make the tool Unbreakable, thus allowing you to have ACTUAL free infinite food (because the tool can never be damaged again [Except with some materials like Extra Utilities 2's Magical Wood, which make your tool Magically Brittle], thus preventing it from losing durability whenever it feeds you). {Note: Not all modpacks lets you do this; in some modpacks I've played (can't remember which), once a tool/weapon is made Unbreakable, Pig Iron's Tasty trait stops working for some reason. This is probably done on purpose, because infinite free food is probably seen as too overpowered and needs to be stopped.) One of the Tinkers weapons I like to do this with is the Shuriken. Speaking of the Shuriken, that leads me to my next point.
- Stone lets you create a Meal-Shield-Weapon: "What the heck is a Meal-Shield-Weapon?" Well, it's a term that I just made up. Let me tell you what it means. First of all, the term is sort of self-explanatory; it's an item that operates as a meal, shield and weapon all at once. A Tinkers Shuriken can operate in such a manner. Here's how you build it: Firstly, a Tinkers Shuriken is basically a 4-point ninja star, with each point being a Knife Blade. To make a Shuriken into a Meal-Shield-Weapon, make three of the blades out of Pig Iron, Stone and Wood (the Stone is for easy repairs and the Wood is for auto-repair via the Ecological trait). The fourth blade can be made out of any material you wish, though there are some materials I recommend (but we'll discuss that later). Now, how do this Shuriken work as a Meal-Shield-Weapon? Well, it operates as a Meal because it auto feeds you. It is a Weapon, because, well, it is a weapon and meant primarily to do damage. It is a Shield because it can be held and operated from the offhand and lets you block damage. It doesn't block damage in the traditional way, but it does let you block damage by auto-healing you, thus allowing to restore health. In my opinion, auto-regen and blocking damage with a shield are technically the same thing because they accomplish the same task; both are designed to keep your health from dropping too low (I use the same tactic in other games, like Final Fantasy 5. I don't equip my characters with shields because I like to dual wield weapons. Instead, I equip all my guys with Protect Rings, which give auto-regen). Anyway, I said I was going to tell you what you could make the 4th blade out of, so let me do that: Restonia is a material from Actually Additions mod. This material has the Hearts trait, which lets you do 70% extra damage at full health (and staying at full health is easy due to Pig Iron's Tasty trait. By the way, Pig Iron also has Baconlicious, which makes blocks/enemies sometimes drop Bacon - another way to keep your health up). Bone is good, as it does a lot of damage for such a cheap material. Cactus is a good defensive material, as it helps you attack enemies from a distance via automatic retaliation, this lets you deal with skeletons a bit more easily. End Stone is good, because it helps you fight Enderman via the Enderference trait; this trait allows you to attack Endermen with any weapon (even a projectile weapon, which the Shuriken obviously is), and keeps them from teleporting for a short time. But if you happen to come across a lot of Gold early game (at least 10 ingots worth, or just 5 Gold Ore Blocks which can be transformed in the Smeltery into 10 ingots), then that 4th blade should be made into Paper; this usually gives you 5 Modifiers. All you need now is 5 Blank Gold Casts and 40 Obsidian to make 5 Reinforcement Modifiers and make your Shuriken Unbreakable.
A final tip: When I build early game tools for Tinkers, here's how I like to build them: for my Pick, I like to Make it out of a Stone Pickaxe Head, Wood Tool Binding and Wood Tool Rod. In most modpacks, you Pickaxe starts out with 3 modifiers. What I like to do is use the first two Modifiers to apply the Diamond and Emerald traits. This shoots my durability up from slightly over 100 to just over 1,000. Then I use an Obsidian Sharpening Kit to max out its mining level. Finally, for the last Modifer, I apply Luck and try to get it up to Luck III. For my Shuriken (which is my preferred weapon when playing modded Minecraft, by the way), I also like to apply the Diamond, Emerald and Luck III modifiers (most modpacks I know have Shuriken have 3 Modifiers, but some let it only have 1; in that case, focus mainly on Luck III; Luck III requires a whopping 360 Lapis or 40 Lapis Blocks, but it's worth the effort). The materials I choose are the ones I outlined above: the first three blade are Wood, Stone and Pig Iron. I prefer the fourth one to be either Restonia, Cactus or Bone. You can attach a Nether Star to both your tools if you want, too, to apply the Soulbound trait. This makes them stay in your inventory upon death, and doesn't require a Modifier slot. Getting Nether Stars early game is usually quite difficult, but it depends on your particular modpack and/or your level of skill/bravery.
Another final tip: Obviously this Pickaxe mines relatively slowly, being made out of Stone and all. There are ways to circumvent this, however. For one, you can use Restone to add the Haste trait to your tool (not recommended, as I prefer to use my Modifier slots to add other useful traits to my Pickaxe; slower mining speed doesn't bother me anyway). Alternatively, you can use Veinminer or OreExcavation or FTB Ultimine. These let you mine large amounts of blocks, provided that they're connected and are made from the same material. VeinMiner or its equivalent are available in most modpacks, so if I'm mining Obsidian, I can just hold down the button I assigned to OreExcavation/VeinMineetc., and when I break the Obsidan block, the other Obsdian blocks near it come up as well. this saves a lot of time and makes up for the slow mining speed. That's why when I play most modpacks, having slow mining speed usually doesn't bother me.
Those are all the tips I had for TiCon 2. Now, on to TiCon 3:
- First of all, you can forget about the Shuriken. They don't exist anymore. Well, they do, but they've been transformed into cheap throwaway consumable items. You have Flint ones for Knockback and Quartz ones for damage. That's it. They're not regular weapons anymore, and can't be upgraded with Modifiers. This is possibly do to the fact that Shuriken can be OP, so that particular weapon had to be nerfed to the ground.
- Therefore, we need only to focus on the Pickaxe. Obviously, we still make the head out of Stone (well, it's called Rock now). But what about the Tool Handle and Tool Binding?
- Let's start with the Tool Handle. We should make it out of something durable. But what? Three good early options are Wood, Whitestone and Slimewood. Wood no longer allows for auto-heal via Ecological, but instead wood now has the trait Cultivated, which lets you restore 50% more durability whenever you repair it. Or if you have Botania installed, you can spring for Living wood instead of regular wood. Livingwood has the trait called...well, Livingwood. This trait is similar to Cultivated, but repair materials are 75% more effective instead. Whitestone is good, too. It gives your tool the Stoneshield trait: Stoneshield adds a second durability meter, and when you mine Stone, sometimes that Stone is consumed and then added to the Stoneshield meter. Then when you use the tool again, you can randomly use the Stoneshield meter's durability instead of regular durability. Whitestone is made from... well, white stone, AKA End Stone. End Stone can be easily obtained early in some modpacks. But if not, there are alternative ways to make Whitestone: you just pour molten metals onto a Rock tool part in a Casting Table - metals like Tin, Aluminum of Zinc. Slimewood lets you do the same thing with Overslime, which lends you a second slimy durability bar with, I believe, a minimum value of 50 points (or more, depending on the number of tools parts have the Overslime trait. This meter can also have more points based multiplying 50 by the tool's base durability multiplier). Slimewood is made by pouring Slime on a Wood Tool Part. Slimewood also has the Overgrowth ability, which makes your tool slowly regenerate its Overslime meter. So now your tool has THREE ways you can repair it: Rock Repair Kits, Slime Balls, and auto-repair. A good fourth material could be Pig Iron, but I'll discuss that later.
- What about the tool binding? Well, in this version of TiCon, the Tool Binding doesn't affect the stats of the tool in any way, meaning it doesn't affect the tool's durability. It just adds traits instead. So here, you can add relatively low durability materials if you want. You can use any of the materials from above, or you can use a Chain for the Reinforced I Modifier, letting your Pickaxe take 25% less damage.
- Based on the info from above, a cool idea would be to have a Stone Pickaxe Head, a Whitestone/Chain Tool Binding and a Slimewood/Pig Iron Tool Handle.
- Actually, I think I have a better idea: Keep the Rock Pickaxe Head, but make the other two parts into Pig Iron. Pig Iron is different now. Pig Iron tools don't auto-feed you anymore; you have to hold right-click in order to eat them (plus I don't think Baconlicious is a trait anymore, either). But the trade-off is that they heal more. Each level of Tasty restores 1 Hunger and 0.1 Saturation. So with two Pig Iron Tool Parts, we have Tasty II, which restores 2 Hunger per bite and 0.2 Saturation as well. This is the best early game pickaxe possible: it restores a decent amount of Hunger (at least, for an item that's normally not supposed to be edible) and can easily be repaired.
- Oh yeah! I almost forgot about mining levels! Well, the highest mining level now is not Cobalt, but Netherite. To boost out Pick to this mining level, we need to first apply either the Diamond or Emerald Modifiers. I prefer Diamond, if you have to choose; this boosts your mining level to Diamond (which seems to be one below Netherite) and gives us 500+ extra durability (in contrast, Emerald only adds 50% extra durablity and gives us an Iron mining level). Only then can we apply the Netherite Modifier. This requires 1 Netherite Ingot, which isn't really an early game material, unless your particular modpack allows you to get it early for some reason; in that case, you can just add on the Emerald Modifier anyway, instead. Of course, if you can afford it, you should add all three Modifiers to your Pickaxe; you durability will then shoot through the roof.
Note: Here's how I would build my ultimate early game Pickaxe. First, like I said above, I would choose a Stone (sorry, Rock) Pickaxe Head. Then I would make both the Tool Bind and Rod out of Pig Iron. Next, I would maximize my durability; like I said above, I would try to add both Diamond and Emerald Modifiers, if I can get my hands of some Nehterite early somehow. Finally, I would maximize my Luck. All TiCon 3 Tools/Weapons (except for Rose Gold, which has more) have 2-3 Modifier slots (which we just used up), and 1 Ability slot, which we haven't used yet. Luck is considered an Ability, now. Luck still has three levels, but the materials needed are more expensive/rare (you still need some Lapis, but now you need more than that). Luck (1st level) requires, on a tool/weapon (because TiCon 3 has armor too, which has a different recipe for Luck), a blue flower (a Blue Orchid or a Cornflower), 2 Copper Ingots and 2 Lapis Blocks. Luckier (level 2) requires a Golden Carrot, two Gold Ingots and two Ender Pearls. And finally, Luckiest (the third and final level) requires two Rose Gold Ingots, a Diamond, a Name Tag and a Rabbit's foot (it makes sense that a Rabbit's Foot is requires for the highest level of Luck, because you'd have to be extremely Luck to be able to even get one. Ditto for a Name Tag). It's a lot harder to max out Luck in Tinkers Construct 3 than it was in Tinkers Construct 2, but it's still worth the effort.
Well, that's it. That's all the ways that I can think of getting really strong in TiCon focusing primarily on Stone. I hope this guide is useful to you all!

2023.05.31 20:18 Sexyunicorn99 quick pre-release Zangief overview
1-he's slower.
lp now 7f from 5f in sfv
cr.lp now 5f
lk now 7f
cr.mp 8f
mk still 10f and has great range. I think the hitbox is at the very tip of his shoe.
Hop knee is 14f with 7 active frames. if it hits meaty and/or in drive rush, it can combo.
cr.mk 9f
HK 13f
cr.hk 12f
SPD still 5f
basically add a 2-3f to most of his old moves
2-you can't combo into super 3. tried from many different situations and I couldn't. I think only DI and smetana drop wall splat on Punish counter can be combo'd into super 3.
3-can punish counter very easily into 4k damage with only 2 bars. HK into ex-BD
4-SPD into drive rush if timed correctly can give your opponent anywhere from 6 frames to only 3 frames to act. hard to time correctly due to needing to gauge the distance. I couldn't personally hit any earlier than that.
5-Russian suplex into drive rush is guaranteed frame 1 oki. all versions give same frames except ex which pushes both of you slightly more towards the wall, and gives 27f instead of 26.
6-I remember the cyclone super 2 hitting almost full screen in the closed beta footage. in this version it almost has the same range as VT1.
7-he lost his lp anti-air. seems near impossible to anti-air with it now. seems his anti air normals are hellstab, HK, and cr.hp. hellstab has wider hitbox infront of him than you think
8-Borscht dynamite is not special cancellable. it can also be used from the ground.
9-Mid range EX Siberian express is going to be an online MENACE. it has 23f start-up with 1 hit of armor (non-EX is 28f). if you think you're safe from SPD, you can quickly be grabbed and pushed to the wall. also with drive rush can give you frame 1 oki.
10-SPD range change is noticeable immediately. that bitch hits hella far.
11-punish counter held HP into FULL drive rush is +5 to +7. guranteed hit/grab mix-up and corner carry
12-Tundra storm parried Zangief's own HK, MK, and Lk. in SFV it would've only parried MK. dfHK from zangief does not get reversed BUT ZANGIEF DOESN'T GET DAMAGED EITHER. the attack just bounces off.
13-according to infil, Gief has the highest health of 11000. Honda and Marisa have 10500, rest 10000.
14-super cannot be jumped after flash, 7f start-up
15-Modern Gief gains great on reaction anti-air anti-fireball/whiff punish supers. but loses nearly his entire Punish counter tool-kit. Smetana drop, HK, and Cartwheel. viability all depends on if reaction super is better for him than punish-counters.
16-EX lariat isn't invincible like a DP.
17-EX borscht dynamite is needed to combo into it. regulars will whiff
18-all his supers are invincible on frame 1
19-punish counter Smetana dropkick into FULL drive rush is +12.
I probably missed a lot. so if you want me to test anything, let me know

2023.05.31 19:09 alexanderb35 Read between the lines. Part 1: drug laws. Part 2: interacting with police. Summary
Mtl law book
Controlled drugs and substances act, cdsa. Substances on this list are controlled substances. Schedules are categories substances fall into
If lose case can be deported
If you possess over the legal limit of pot can be imprisoned post 2018 still. 2018 is when pot was legalized.
There are provincial and federal laws
The police arrest but the crown charges. Crown can charge for a different crime then police arrested for.
If you are being prosecuted then there are charges against you in a criminal file
The crown and police have a lot discretionary power with your treatment and your file. Crown is like prosecutor, not police.
Director of penal and criminal prosecutions, DPCP, prosecutor provincial boss, instruct and provide guidance for prosecutors. Other provinces have their own name.
Jury or judge acquit which means your innocent. Prosecutor can also withdraw charges "withdrawn" status.
Sentence are possible consequences of being guilty
Priors are prior criminal record
Law enforcement officer: immigration officers, police, youth protection agents, municipal inspectors, correctional officers etc.
Black, indigenous, racialized and migrant communities, people who are known to the police, are targeted more by police, meaning police also violate their human rights more often. Sentenced more harshly than whites. Drug laws are historically created to target these groups.
Systematic bias: those with authority, even incl teachers, have explicit or implicit bias against certain communities
Racial profiling: officers target certain groups of ppl and postal codes more.
Anti gang squad, anti gun squad, anti radicalization are dog whistles for targetting minorities. Also includes applying additional surv eillance to target group.
During say a anti gun police raids, they can prosecute the raided for any illegal drugs the cops find. This results in potential criminals fearing to call the police bc if there is an investigation the police could nail the caller. If a sex worker has HIV and does not disclose their HIV status it counts as sexual assault, meaning if a John beats her up, risky to call the cops on him.
If have PR status and found guilty could be deported/removal. Some drug addicts only are PRs.
Anytime you speak to police you are making a statement. Crown can use these statements to convince someone else to plead guilty or convict. Your silence cannot incriminate but your statement might.
Police allowed to lie. Will do anything really to get a statement. Don't react to any of their behaviours, comments, or questions since that can be a statement. Try to remain silent. But many ppl do not have the privilege of remaining quiet, ex that can worsen police behavior.
Rehearse how to speak to police without providing any incriminating statements if you think you want to make a statement.
Police cannot arrest you if they don't identity at least 1 offence. On arrest they give undertaking paper or hold you until court date.
After released by police, prosecutor might decide not to prosecute. If police are holding you after arrest your 1st court date happens after 1-3 days. Sentencing may be postponed until therapy/school/work etc is complete.
1st court case is usually 1-3 days after arrest, then bail applies for the 2nd court date in like months/yrs. When released after arrest can be released without conditions.
If plead guilty with lawyer, lawyer can negotiate to have certain charges withdrawn
Cannabis act covers cannabis.
You can be acquitted of 1 charge while charged with the others
Willing blindness: you are supposed to inquire about the nature of a delivery you are driving if the package seems suspicious.
4(1) Possession, "Simple possession": to prosecute evidence needed: knowledge/willful blindness that substance in your possession and knowledge/willful blindness that it is a controlled substance named in the cdsa and measure of control/consent to their possession Law requires measurable quantity of drug, ex residue in a bag If there are drugs in your car and you are the driver or passenger, it cannot be the only reason for a conviction. Possession - drugs don't have to be on you. Willful blindness - you ought to have know you have the drugs in your possession Knowledge of your possession is proven by it's location (hidden or in sight), whether police have statements by you or others. Schedule 4 substances and lower cannot be found guilty of simple possession, but can be found guilty of other offences like trafficking
Double doctoring/ 4(2) obtaining a practitioner: asked dr for prescription or drugs without disclosing that info about the drug that u received in the last 30 days. Both for personal usage and for dealing. Uncommon charge.
5(1) Drug trafficking, trafficking in substance: proof must prove that you did 1 of the following or that you offered to do one of the following: - Selling drug or prescription: incl if the sale is not completed. - helping or encouraging someone to buy/sell. Bringing the buyer to the seller and if without this help the sale would never have taken place. Introducing a potential buyer to a seller is sometimes prosecutable depending on the judge. It sounds like it might only be an offense if accused works for the dealer and arranges the meeting between buyer and seller, but not clear. - giving drugs for free or for "free" is still trafficking - cannot administer illegal drugs even if asked too - if transporting home for personal consumption only, simple possession. But if or the purposes of sharing with friend, roommate then trafficking. Exceptions: inside safe injection site for drug checking purposes. Buying doesn't seem to be trafficking. Selling a prescription (the paper) is trafficking - Max sentence is life
5(2) Possession for the purposes of trafficking: simple possession + purpose/intent of trafficking. Large quantity helpful to prosecutor but not required. Presence of measuring, packaging equipment, multiple bagged quantities, large amounts of cash, notebooks can be evidence. - Max sentence is life
Drug trafficking: sale, gift, administrating drug, transport of drug.
Case study: Nat brought cdsa drug to share with client at motel. Client overdoses and Nat has to call 911. Police show up too. She admits to cops that she bought the drugs and that he asked for them so the cops know it was his idea. She is convicted of trafficking.
6(1) Import (or export) and 6(2) possession for the purpose of import (or export): all must be proven: Bought drugs/organized their entry into Canada Knowledge/willful blindness/recklessness that controlled substance Intention to import the substance Bring drugs or organize their entry into the country: happens as soon as drug enters/leaves any country and continues until drug arrives at final destination in Canada in a person's possession. If in transit through mtl and Toronto offence has take place in both locations. You don't have to have been personally transporting the drugs or even present at the place of entry to be charged. If police intercept the drugs in transit, irrelevant to defense. Crown doesnt have to prove you know the precise nature of the drug. Recklessness: ex accused caught with 2 bottles of wine that contain dissolved cocaine, since the cocaine amount was large, the producer prob wouldn't give this bottle to a blind courier. Behaviour following importation may provide convincing evidence of participation in offence: meeting with ppl, receiving calls of short duration at late hours, coded language by accused+accomplices, using public telephones to talk to "accomplices" despite owning a cell. After drug arrives to final destination, other ppl cannot be prosecuted for "possession for purposes of import" Police are specifically looking for fake suitcases on flights being carried by women 30s-40s
7(1) Production of substance, 7.1(1) possession, sale, etc for use in production or trafficking: production - manufacturing, harvesting, growing, etc. Offence includes offering to produce drug Evidence must prove you have some control over location/operation of production: cannot be convicted for simply being in a place of production. Police usually do detailed surveillance against accused first. Warrants for interception of private communication, track/trace (surveillance device on car), garbage searches, search warrants Police usually find out when purchase of large or suspicious purchases that are commonly used in drug production.
If police are at your house for a DV investigation and they see a baggie of what looks like heroin, can result in arrest.
Possession means: you have it on your personal possession, you know a friend is holding it for you, you know that you have hidden it somewhere. If your friend is holding a cdsa drug for you and they know it's cdsa drug, then you both are in possession. If the cops raid your grandma's house and you stores cdsa drugs there, she will not be convicted.
Knowledge of the drug: you just have to know it's a controlled substance, not what it is specifically to be convicted.
Judges sentence more harshly depending on drug type. Ex if there are current anti meth events or media, worse sentence.
Possession of methadone/opioid agonist treatments (OAT): - Health care providers don't need permission to prescribe, administer, sell/provide methadone to patients. Patients need a ordeprescription. To own methadone must be a patient or health care provider basically.
Initial meeting with a judge after arrest is a bail hearing.
To get bail: - better odds if minor crime - have $ via bail or signing a "recognizance" that says you'll pay bail. Get both back later on. A "surety" (friend) can pay for you. - fixed address that isn't a homeless shelter - ties to the community - family, legal job, studies, community engagement - proof of how will support self legally - having a friend reserve you a spot in rehab - indigenous
Conditions can prevent you from owning a cell phone.
Causing death by criminal negligence and manslaughter for giving drugs to someone who overdosed. rare. Can be convicted if you and a friend are shooting up together and you shoot them up at their request and then they die. Accidentally bringing a drug that contains fentanyl and your friend dies. Harsher punishment if accused is much older than decreased or if deceased is not much of a drug user.
Crown can withdraw some charges but keep others.
A guilty plea only may help improve sentencing. If pleading guilty better to do it before the trial.
Didn't type up schedule 1-7 drugs pg 38, 39 Schedule 1: opioids, meth, Adderall, ghb, methadone, MDMA Schedule 2: synthetic cannabinoids, most cannabis is regulated by the cannabis act now. 3: shrooms, lsd 4: zolpidem, steroids, benzodiazepines 5: not in the book if it exists 6: ingredients to manufacture drugs 9: manufacturing equipment ex machines to fill pills
Selling other medications like idk ibuprofen could be a civil matter where the gov might issue a large fine against you and failure to pay the fine results in conviction.
Sentencing - court determines punishment, ex prison, fines
If your lawyer and prosecutor agree on a specific sentence during a guilty plea, judge will most likely accept that, but judge doesn't have to.
Types of sentences: un/conditional discharge, fine, suspended sentence with probation and conditions (ex community service, rehab) imprisonment in institution or in community.
Being guilty can have other effects like travel ban to USA.
Sentencing considers: type and context of offence, circumstances of arrest, criminal record/priors, first charge for this kind of offence, current situation, level of detail and assurances in rehab plan, are there victims, prosecuted as summary or indictable offense. Unofficially judge considers bias like being anti-sex worker.
Prosecuted for either indictable offense or summary offense. sometimes the law decides which, sometimes prosecutor does. Determines max sentence and severity judge will serve.
Indictable offense - more serious. Some crimes are always indictable. Summary - less serious
Aggravating factors - reasons court gives harsher sentence: - Not having a drug addiction at the time of offence - priors - commited offence for financial gain - breach of trust - etc
Mitigating factors - reasons court gives better sentence: - guilty plea - been in drug rehab if had drug addiction at the time of the crime (get letters from case workers) - age - remorse - community involvement - etc
Mandatory minimum sentences, Mms.
Since 2012 Mms higher and a bunch of drugs moved up in schedule
Gladue report: - optional for accused. - affects all parts of court - prepared by some org - for anyone who identifies as indigenous
Impact of race and culture assessment IRCA: - A few provinces have this - gladue for black ppl - judge can legally ignore it - exists bc black ppl have faced a lot of adversity
Stimga = negative stereotypes
Ppl who use drug usually get worse treatment from justice system.
If you participate in a treatment program pre sentencing, it can reduce your sentence oand delay legal proceedings. Court needs to recognize its value and legitimacy. Court can also force you to attend a program of their choosing which can be like prison-lite. You can propose your plan to the court.
Special tribunals in mtrl regulate the provincial court treatment programs.
Many sex workers gain access to new resources and opportunities which can allow them change their condition and protect themselves. Anti sex worker laws deny them of this and their agency.
Drug addicts and sex workers are constantly stimgatized especially if they do sex work and use drugs.
Sex workers: Try to represent as a victim for a reduced sentence: - apologize and show remorse about your sex work - talk about how you're a victim of sex work - allow the court to paint your sex work as all the problems in your life - make no claim about the useful of sex work in your life - be poor, get exploited by clients/pimps - when the court tells you to stop talking to other sex workers, drug users, clients, do it.
If you are between 12-17 YO: - youth criminal justice act or director of youth protection applies to you, 1 or the other, you can sorta pick - "very serious" crimes you're prosecuted as an adult, so public criminal record - if an adult works with you on a crime it worsen the adults sentence
Police can charge you for possession of a weapon of they find a scissors or pocket knife
If police find you with a gun, they can easily give you 3 yrs. Weapons bans are 10 yrs.
Immigrants: - try to get either type of discharge (conditional or unconditional), that's the same as not guilty in immigration law. - refugees without Canadian citizenship can be deported - if you don't have PR, a hybrid offense or 2 summary offenses can get you deported - PR: receive a 6 month sentence or guilty of a crime that has max sentence of 10 yrs. - with an expired visa, cops database doesn't have that kind of info, but they could call Canadian Border Safety Agency (CBSA)
worse charges for drug trafficking if offence happens near school or other place frequented by minors, or on correctional facility grounds, or in a gang, setting traps, using someone else's building, creating hazards in a residential neighborhood
Indictable offence usually don't have fines associated with them.
Cannabis act (CA) - distribution and trafficking are the same thing - having on possession for sale is illegal - public place: public has assess too and any vehicle located in public view - generally refers to dried cannabis, usually 30g or equivalent
Illicit cannabis is illegally obtained cannabis. It doesn't have the gov stamp of approval
Some ppl give a fake name to cops bc risk of being identified is worse than the risk of obstruction. If you give police a fake address, they might mail court papers to that address and you won't be able to receive them. If you give the cops a fake name and need to retract it, try to say it's a "nickname but my legal name is x"
Recording cops: - legal for you to record cops unless property owner has rules against it, recording actually does interfer with the investigation - police may tell you that it's illegal. Might charge with obstruction, or say you're breaking like privacy, take your recording device, demand you erase recording, say they're seizing your phone bc it contains evidence - if police seize your phone, they could find incriminating evidence to charge you or someone else with another crime
Frisking: - cops can legally if u are arrested. Only supposed to if they thinking you have a dangerous item on you and are a threat to someone's safety. If you get upset this increases the odds they'll search you. If they are searching you for weapons not supposed to search you for other things like drugs, phones, tattoos etc. They can use this to search for needles to identify you as a drug user - searching you for evidence of the crime they say you committed - if you're temporarily detained/being questioned same thing - if you give them permission to search you or your property, they will. To prevent this say loudly "I do not consent to the search" and "je ne consens pas a une fouille" (jeh neh koh sehn pah ah oon foo yeh) - if an illegal search results in say drug charges, the drug charges could be withdrawn - if unlawful arrest (ex police brutality) then the subsequent search might be illegal
Seizures: - can seize items in a warrant. Ask to see and read the warrant. - if the warrant is to search a location, must have that address, specific area they can search, and list items theyre searching for - ask cops for a copy of the report identifying the seized items and where the items are being held Can seize items without warrant if they think it's related to a crime, ex: - weapons that may have been used in the offense, Items that provide evidence like phones, scales, note books, items obtained through criminal offenses like money from drug selling, They can seize items before any arrests While you're detained they will frequently go through your phone Note down: everything they seize, when, whom, where you were at the time. Careful about "obstructing" police while you do this, record officer name, patrol car number, badge number and other identitying info, knowing seizing location helpful for trying to get your things back, if an item is evidence you won't get it back til the end of the case, if it's considered proceeds of a crime you'll likely never get it back, illegal things you will never get back
While detained, you can try asking a guard or lawyer if you can use your phone to get phone numbers, usually they'll say no. Guards will be able to read your phone while this happens. Memorize the numbers of potential sureties.
Don't have incriminating evidence about yourself or your associates
Drug use equipment: - can legally distribute unused drug equipment - if you have drugs on you, having sterile drug equipment can be used as additional evidence against you - may still be seized by security - If you're hanging out with a drug users and you're searched and they find sterile needles, they may then search your companion
Being detained: - physical detention is like being cuffed - psychological - they tell you you're not free to leave/act like you can't leave - can detain for: you're connected to a crime, being a witness, victim, breaking a bylaws, warrant however discretionary power means they might not for a warrant, being present at a raid - technically don't have to identify yourself, but police will likely arrest you for obstruction - police have to tell you why
Being stopped and questioned: - just bc you are in the area a crime took place, doesn't mean they can stop and question you legally unless you match suspect description. They will anyway if they want
Warrants apply country wide
Arrested: - cops must tell you what you're being arrested for - they'll let you go with an "appearance notice" that may include conditions - you'll receive a "summons" in the mail is really an appearance notice - keep you in detention for a few days until a judge sees you - If you have kids, get a criminal lawyer and family law lawyer - if you're an immigrant criminal lawyer and immigration lawyeexpert - arrest warrant: must have name of person to arrested
You can negotiate conditions, like if banned from an area but have dr appointments there. Lawyer can do this.
If cops question you or tell you to go with them: - ask "am I free to leave? Am I being detained or arrested" if unclear ask again, if still unclear make motions to leave and leave if they don't stop you - if detained: "what am I being detained for?" - if arrested: "what am I being arrested for?" -- you have the right to ask and to speak to a lawyer - technically illegal for them to detain you due to trying to bring you to a shelter or rehab etc
Police legally have to wear badge number and name tag and have to identify themselves if you ask them to
After abusive police interaction, note down: - when, where event happened - held anywhere? Conditions of where you were held? Location? - officer names, numbers, car numbers - what was searched? When, where, how did it happen? - who was searched? How and where were they searched? Name and badge number of cop. - Dmges? take pics - who was detained? We're they offered an interpreter of needed? Do they speak the same language as the officer? - give all the info to lawyer
If cop grabs you and you pull away they might try to charge you with assault of an officer
Prep for dealing with police: - anyone in my party break a law? Any warrants? Youth protection involved with anyone? - if we're stopped by police, are we all staying silent, all giving the same info? Other plan? - are cops targetting me, the neighborhood? - if cops targetting someone else, can I walk away? - is my hangout area heavily surveilled? Is my party heavily surveilled? - if I have id, does it reflect the name I'm gonna tell the cops? What happens if an officer shows up who knows me? - how to respond to cops if my kids are with me? - condition breach? - am I carrying anything arrestable? Plan if they search me? - are all my incriminating items hidden from plain view? - what police consequences is most harmful to me? What am I most concerned about? What am I willing to do to avoid these? - can I role play with someone?
Good Samaritan overdose act (Good Sam law): - If someone is overdosing and you call 911, police legally aren't supposed to arrest you or anyone else there, incl overdosee for simple possession or simple possession condition breaches - everything else they can arrest you for. And they are known to use the opportunity to extract arrests Consider: throwing away/hiding your illegal drugs, tell others there you called 911 so they can leave, tell dispatch that area is safe so maybe police won't come, should I leave and get someone else to stay or leave a note on the overdosees,
Security guards, transit officers, etc: - no legal requirement to speak with them - they can citizens arrest you physically legally if they see you doing it - cannot legally search you - can legally use reasonable force to remove you from a building - Montreal public transit security can become special constables easily and can detain and arrest ppl suspected of criminal activity on mtl transit. Can access police database. - All public transit security can fine and issues tickets related to their public transit. You're required to provide them name, address, dob
Driving a vehicle: - if you are driving, police have more authority, like asking for ID, breathalyze - police can stop vehicles bc: see a driving violation, believe the vehicle is related or a crime, routine police blockade for like drunk drivers passing - often use license plates to determine if the car was stolen or a getaway vehicle or whatnot - police pulling over ppl in high crime areas for no other reason is illegal - important to not have knife, drug residue on plain view - if you're too shaky, pink eyes, they know lol in the car as drug dealers, they're more likely to find you suspicious - after arresting driver, they can legally search your vehicle if it's related to why they arrested you, ex they arrest you for drugs and then they can then search the vehicle for more drugs - more likely to search your vehicle if you're wearing a bulletproof vest - can search the vehicle legally for "safety", they see you have weapons charges and then they search the vehicle or if they have reason to fear for imminent evidence loss, fear imminent threat to someone's safety - legally easier for police to search your car then pat you down. - police can only legally ask driver for ID unless they turn the stop into an investigation in which case they can then ask everyone in the vehicle for ID - sleeping in your vehicle: take keys out of ignition, sleep in the back. Police may still harrass you and say it's in relation to criminal charges
Investigations: - begin for any reason, even via anonymous tip line calls - often police with surveill and if they see suspicious activity, they get a warrant
Residential location: - greatest privacy from police here legally, however: if owner unknown, abandon, frequented by marginalized ppl, police more likely to invade - when can they enter your house: generally police cannot enter without a warrant unless the person who answers the door consents, if they think someone inside is about to commit a crime or that a crime is in progress, in hot pursuit and the runner enters the house, if they think someone inside's life is in danger - if you don't consent to them entering say: I do NOT consent to you entering, je ne consens pas a ce que vous rentrez (jeh neh Kon sen pah ah seh voo rehn-tray) - can get warrants to enter for unpaid tickets, money owed to revenue Quebec - police search your home when: someone being arrested there and police think something is a danger to other potential occupants, police fear imminent lose of evidence, medical emergencies (Medicare card, suicide notes) - if they see something suspicious (drugs, scales, large sums of cash) in plain view (from your door, or anything they see if you allow them to enter. Even if you let them in, they're not supposed to search your house or roam to other rooms) they can seize it. - an arrest warrant isn't enough to search a place
Hotel/motel: for your room, generally same rules as residential, but a bit less privacy - for public areas, no privacy benefits - if cops get keys from hotel staff or permission from hotel staff they'll use that to enter your room - often will say the housekeeping staff saw something suspicious
House keepers: - if they see drugs, lots of condoms, paraphernalia, sex work publications or drug publications they may contact police. There is an increasing trend for this happening under the guise of human trafficking prevention esp if you're a marginalized/racialized women who uses drugs. - they are allowed to enter your room
Hospital: - usually won't provide the cops with much info unless they have a warrant for a patient. Sometimes even will not let cops into your hospital room - will contact law enforcement. Usually have low threshold to attempt to kick out ppl as it relates to arguments, raised voices, disruptions - if you are with a patient, hospital more likely to provide info on you to cops, so careful what info you give cops - as a patient u may have to change clothes and that could lead to dropping suspicious items out of your pocket - if you go to the hospital with a friend, tell them to stfu about providing info about you - bringing a friend can help by taking notes, advocating for you. Ideally your friend isn't know to the cops, can stay calm.
Supervised injection site, SIS: - inside cannot be charged with simple possession. Cannot give to others or administer to others. - staff cannot be charged with trafficking for providing the venue or material facilitating the drug usage. Same with staff checking drugs, which would normally be trafficking - police can do whatever outside of the building. If arrested for simple possession, could tell lawyer you were on your way to the sis/on your way back home - if you are investigated in relation to a sis, make sure your lawyer speaks with the sis bc your lawyer prob doesn't know the basics of the sis. - to use a sis, usually don't need to provide real name or info. If you give your real info, easier for medical staff at hospital to look you up if needed
Speaking to police: - if arrested cops suppose to stop asking you questions once you request to speak to a lawyer, but they will often still ask you questions anyway. After you speak to a lawyer they have the right to question you again - they will attempt to provoke you into speaking - interrogator will ask random questions to build rapport (ex personal life, interests). Will often promise or claim to help you if you talk to them - legally can lie about most things. Ex evidence, other ppl's statements, "if you leave now we can't help you later", "if you cooperate now you will get a more lenient sentence". - don't react to their questions
Initial appearance in from of a judge before bail hearing: - you appear before a judge within a day. If it's a weekend or holiday then after that. Have a lawyer come with you. This is when you plea guilty or not guilty - can try to exchange 1 release condition for another, discuss this with your lawyer beforehand - if you receive a fine, some organizations can you get a payment plan. Community service can also be used to pay off a fine.
Bail hearing - you can schedule the meeting with a judge at a later date to give you more time to prepare for how to make bail - usually happens within 3 days - prepare in advance how to get released on bail - Prosecutor will often argue you shouldn't be released bc: you won't attend your next court date, you pose a risk to the public, public will lose faith or you're released. - your lawyer will likely argue: you have a fixed address (can be friends, family), will obey your bail conditions - sometimes to make bail you need: bail money/recognizance document saying you'll pay latesurety. Surety should have legal job and no criminal record. Show that you have routine, like school, clubs, job, family. Can have someone who ideally does not have a record come testify to your character. Proof of income. Someone to book you a spot in rehab. - if the court takes your passport, photocopy the important pages
Cdsa and cannabis act are frderal criminal laws, but are often prosecuted by provincial/municipal forces
Law reform/Stella: The term decriminalization is getting more widely used and the meaning is recinding. Stella says decriminalization of drugs and sex work is a necessary first step to guarantee human rights. Drug use is not always an illness or problem. Abstinence is not the only way and thinking it's the only way is harmful. Drug sellers should be be categorized as bad ppl. If 1 law is repealed cops will often just target a sigmatized group with a new law. Alternative punishment instead of prison is still not decriminalization, aka Portugal model. For things like cannabis, even tho self possession of an amount is legal, you still can face police surveillance, unwanted police contact, trouble with landlord, etc. Individual prosecution directors, police departments can set guidelines, but those are not related to laws. Guidelines can say more or less punishment.

2023.05.31 15:09 Sexyunicorn99 quick pre-release Zangief overview
1-he's slower.
lp now 7f from 5f in sfv
cr.lp now 5f
lk now 7f
cr.mp 8f
mk still 10f and has great range. I think the hitbox is at the very tip of his shoe.
Hop knee is 14f with 7 active frames. if it hits meaty and/or in drive rush, it can combo.
cr.mk 9f
HK 13f
cr.hk 12f
SPD still 5f
basically add a 2-3f to most of his old moves
2-you can't combo into super 3. tried from many different situations and I couldn't. I think only DI and DI wall splat (DI wall splat doesn't combo, I meant his new normal smetana drop wall splat on Punish counter) can be combo'd into super 3.
I probably missed a lot. so if you want me to test anything, let me know

2023.05.31 07:47 chrisaldrich Zettelkasten Pedagogy Meeup? A Call for Interested Parties and Examples
I've been watching a growing number of teachers, professors, and researchers who have been transferring their personal note taking, zettelkasten, or personal knowledge management practices into the classroom for students from 6th or 7th grade up into college/university level. As it's been a while since this practice was more commonplace (excuse the pun), perhaps it could be useful (and fun) to do a meetup or mini-unconference on the topic to discuss some ideas, practices, and pedagogy?
Format
Depending on everyone's general availability, we could do something on a quiet day over the summer break? I'm thinking something in the 2-4 hour range depending on the level of interest and what folks think would be most productive. At the lower end we could do a few hours as a simple meetup/discussion if there are 10 or fewer, though if there is more interest, then I'm thinking that a BarCamp style (unconference) may be easier with 3-4 sessions of about 45 minutes each and to which people submit various ideas at the start of "camp" and folks can decide what ideas they're interested in supporting or exploring. (If you've never attended an unconference or BarCamp style event, this
IndieWeb page and related pages will give you a bit of an idea of what to expect, though we'll do a much more scaled down version. I'm also a fan of their Code of Conduct, and propose to adopt it for participants.)
Given the potential time zone differentials across Europe and the Americas across which most practitioners I know live, I've found that Saturday morning starts at 8:30 AM Pacific have been historically most convenient, but I'm not opposed to an weekday timeslot if that's more preferrable with a majority of schedules.
If there's enough interest I'm happy to help facilitate something 2-3 times a year in smaller doses. We can start small and informal and expand as necessary.Interest?
If this is something in which you'd be interested in doing, please drop a comment on my website or send me an email (you'll find it on my homepage). Let me know the following:
- Range of preferred dates/times along with any major vacation plans we might work around
- Interest in leading a BarCamp session? Topics? Do you have a presentation/experience you'd like to present (even if it's totally informal)?
- Your area/level of teaching (elementary, middle school, high school, undergraduate, graduate, other) and institution — schedule-wise, I'd like to give the most preference to active educators, though I'm sure we'll attract participants interested in the broader idea of ZK/PKM.
- Would you like to help volunteer time/resources to mounting this as an online only event?
- Other ideas? Needs?
My goal for a first session is to be highly creative and get ideas/discussions of experiences/improvements flowing with the minimal amount of organization and work on the part of all participants. I would hope this would be more fun for the prospective group than work.
Background
I've been collecting examples of teachers/professors who used their
zettelkasten for teaching, some of which include Mario Bunge, Frederic L. Paxson, Gotthard Deutsch, Roland Barthes, and Joachim Jungius. In more recent contexts, I've seen Dan Allosso (aka u/danallosso), Mark Robertson (aka
u/calhistorian),
Nick Santalucia, and
Sean Graham using zettelkasten or linked notes using Obsidian, Roam, etc. for either directly teaching, teaching students how to start such a practice, or using it for OER related practices. I've also heard from a few who are planning on offering coursework with zettelkasten underpinned pedagogy in the near future.
Do you know of others who are practicing and implementing these methods? Those who plan to in the coming year? Please forward this along and we'll see what we can arrange based on the level of interest.
All thoughts and feedback appreciated...

2023.05.31 06:38 RegentofArakko Update: 32L Packing List After 1.5 Years of Travel
| I wanted to provide a follow-up to this post on how my pack has evolved after 1.5 years of travel. I started in Oct 2021 and traveled through Mexico and Central America until Colombia, with a 3-month side quest in Europe due to a family emergency (Germany, UK, Denmark, Norway). After a short break in the US, I started up again and have been through Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico the last 6 months, and am currently back in Colombia. I experienced a lot of variable climates in this span and made some tweaks to my pack to jettison stuff I wasn't wearing or using. Next destinations: Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina (Patagonia), Brasil, and Venezuela. I expect to start Asia mid-to-late next year. I think I can comfortably continue for another 4 years or so, although desire and effort can be fickle mistresses. Note: Everything in bold (aside from the section titles) are either replacement items, outright new additions, or items with adjusted quantities. Anything crossed out was dropped. The seat of the trousers also stretched out way too much, and the dark, inky shades of indigo faded to oblivion (and turned sky blue or even almost white) in the thigh/knee areas...I just looked like I was about to audition for a Backstreet Boys cover band. I was hellbent on holding onto real denim because they are so much more comfortable, but this type of cotton was not meant to be worn so frequently. Even though it's not unlike wearing sandpaper, I switched to the black Outliers in hopes that they will hold up better. (So far, so good after 6 months!) The Merrell hiking shoes are in black and now pull double duty as my "nice" pair (good enough for salsa clubs in Cali!), so now I'm down to 2 pairs of shoes + Xero sandals. And I just got so tired of my blazer real fast. It just wasn't useful or versatile enough with my setup. Google Pixel 3 XL > Google Pixel 7 Pro Jabra Elite 75t Earbuds > Beats Fit Pro (3) > (1) microfiber cloth The big change here was upgrading to the Patagonia Cragsmith 32L, which I picked up on sale. I had zipper issues wit the Bellroy, and the Cragsmith is just nicer, roomier, and sturdier all around, and they are exactly the same weight. It's also much more structured and stands upright easily on its own when packed. I almost never pack it out to full unless I'm carrying food. For those considering: You may notice further down the post in the pics that this pack has almost no interior organization to speak of, save for the quick access pocket at the top. That's because this is a rock-climbing pack, and not necessarily intended for general travel. For me, however, it checks all the boxes: Light, tough, back-loading panel (!), simple and no-fuss, and a spacious black hole that I can organize it any way I please based on my own organizer bags. I actually upgraded my Pixel 3 XL to the Pixel 6 Pro last Nov, but I broke it in Uruguay. Thanks to the Amex Plat's extended warranty protection, however, I replaced it for free and sprung for the Pixel 7 Pro (and replaced my Jabra Elite 75ts when the earbuds started having issues). Even the battery life difference between the 6 Pro and the 7 Pro is significant, and I can now get through a day+ with moderate-to-heavy camera use + navigating + web surfing. While on the topic: The Amex Platinum is a low-key fantastic travel card in terms of gear coverage. Its Purchase Protection (reimbursement for lost, damaged, stolen, or otherwise non-functional item within 3 months of purchase) and Extended Warranty Protection (doubles the length of the original manufacturer's warranty up to +2 years) have bailed me out several times. Another example: When my Matador On-Grid Packable Day Pack started having zipper problems after 14 months of ownership, Amex fully reimbursed me within 2 days, no questions asked since I put the original purchase on the card. All three credit cards waive foreign transaction fees, a no-brainer for international travel. I generally prefer to focus all my spend on the Chase Sapphire Preferred (the Chase Ultimate Rewards points and travel portal just seem to be more useful in my use case), and Visa is more widely accepted than Amex (because of their ridiculously high interchange fees that they charge merchants). However, if I am buying or replacing any travel-related equipment, electronics, or basically anything with a warranty, that purchase is going straight onto the Amex Plat for the aforementioned protection benefits. And, of course, the Charles Schwab debit card is a must-have as it also waives all foreign transaction fees and exchange rate fees at any ATM worldwide. ATM fees are rebated at the end of every month. https://preview.redd.it/aw1cvk9nx43b1.png?width=2268&format=png&auto=webp&s=d2734685d72b654361c6e9068fe9489fc3cebe2f Clothes - Bluffworks Bluffcube Sport, L

I returned the Nikes for the Brooks. Nikes advertised width sizes are not even remotely accurate. I didn't realize how bad they really were for me until a couple of months in, and they were killing my pinky toes. I had pain in my feet that didn't go away for 6 months. The Brooks, by contrast, have been much roomier. Solid laundry detergent in bar form is quite popular in Latin America, and this in combination with the clothesline I carry have enabled me to travel with far less clothing than I originally thought possible. Also ditched the Stio jacket for the TorrentShell 3L: far lighter, more durable, and water-resistant (and has pit zips!). I almost never used my scarf so bye bye. I upgraded tank tops and the results have been stellar: Softer to the touch, lighter, packs smaller, airs out easily, and I can wear it for weeks on end without it smelling funky. To be completely frank: This pack list would be a lot simpler and lighter if I just stuck to packing clothes specifically for one type of climate. But I've just run into too many random days where there are sudden, torrential downpours with strong gusts of wind, or where temperatures unexpectedly dip into single digits. I'm very happy that the pack accommodates both hot and cold climates, and I haven't looked back since. I was able to downsize the number of cables I carried greatly. The Lewis N Clark adapter set is also quite a bit lighter and more compact than Bestek. The UE Roll 2 speaker has been indispensable: Solo hikes in the mountains, cooling off by rivers, beach days, movie nights, micro-dosing on shrooms, you name it. The upgrade to the Surface Pro 9 is inconsequential for the purposes of this post, but I just wanted to say that that SQ2 Qualcomm chip in the SPX is horrible at apps-mirroring and is laggy as hell, jfc. I am beyond overjoyed to be back on an Intel chip. (Microsoft Complete Protection + Amex Extended Warranty was clutch with this upgrade, too--take note!) The Cragsmith backpack has a pocket for a water bag that I use as laptop storage. The downside is that there is no padding to speak of, so I sprung for a laptop sleeve for extra protection. I've even stretched that bad boy beyond its limit to about 14 feet. Just, wow. That headlamp is amazing, too. Besides helping me rifle through my pack when it's dark in a hostel, it's bailed me out when coming down from dark mountains and viewpoints after watching sunsets (which I do frequently). I brought the air vent smartphone mount thinking I would use it more, but I rented a car exactly one time, and that was for 2 weeks in Puerto Rico...and I didn't even use it because the car came fully equipped with Android Auto in the dash. I've settled on bathing more than once a day as needed and moisturizing frequently in order to avoid unsavory body odor. My floss hack: Remove rolls of floss from their plastic containers, keep one, and reload when needed with the rolls, which has been far more compact. Floss is expensive outside of the US, so I don't mind this extra bit of effort. Got rid of the bottles that came with the Sea to Summit toiletry pouch because I've cut down drastically on the liquids I carry (I tend to just buy small bottles of moisturizer, sunscreen, and toothpaste wherever I am). It's simplified my travel lifestyle completely, and the last 1.5 years have been life-changing. I'm already thinking about more things I plan on cutting the next time I pass through the US. 2023.05.31 01:15 Dan_Stainberg [Econ][Retro] Canada's Federal Budget 2024 Unpacked
SUMMARY
When analysing the new federal budget, there seems to be a nearly universal agreement on the politics that shaped the spending plan. Namely, this budget is big on spending, big on corporate tax reform. Having previously relied on the New Democratic Party to maintain an absolute majority, the Trudeau Government has opted for appeasing their parljlnenatry partners, aiming to buy more time for the this government before the next general election has to be called.
Politically, the Budget can be divided into there main lines. Namely, the Liberals trying to follow through with their promises from the last Federal Election, such as introducing the Canada Disability Benefit, a brand-new advanced research agency, as well as over-delivering on expanded supports for lower-income workers. Economically, introducing a tax-free CDB combined with noticeably more generous and broadly available Canada Workers Benefit also aims to boost Canada's labour force participation, to partially offset traditionally low per capital productivity of Canadian workers.
Then, the issue of the supply and confidence agreement with New Democrats comes into play, finally implementing a national dental care plan being finally brought into the budget, followed by a national prescription drug insurance scheme.
As on the greatest surprises comes in the form of what the Government framed as a "business assistance review" and corporate reform, that is set to be a structural response to US's Inflation Reduction Act, namely by brining programmes as IRAP to a one-stop shop, under an arm-length agency outside of the federal industrial strategy ministry. The Government is also following Europe's lead on development Canadian equity markets, that while incremental, may be a first step to less debt-dependent corporate Canada, while nurturing Canadian innovation, since tech companies tend to be much more reliant on equity financing, rather than traditional bank lending.
Politically, the Liberals continue to emphasise fiscal prudence of the budget, citing stable debt-to-GDP ratios, as well as the fact the budget actually contains a structural surplus, when excusing debt service payments from federal expenditure. Ottawa is also trying to hedge against future attacks when it comes to public subsidies, through introducing an independent oversight body, as well as providing full operational autonomy to a new umbrella organisation, to operate business investment programmes and other agencies.
Notably, however, the Liberals seem to be willing to further
undermine their reputation as credible fiscal managers, rather the cause a new election by breaking their agreement with NDP, as the LPC continues to struggle in federal polling.
Strengthening Canada's Safety Net
Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is set to be radically boosted, aiming to boost labour force participation while easing inflationary pressures for the most vulnerable workers. The budget drastically expands both the generosity and eligibility for the CWB by lowering the income threshold from
$3000 of annual earnings to just $1, including income from self-employment. The Government of Canada also expands eligibility for the benefit, by more closely aligning it with Québec's Solidarity Tax Credit, making full- and part-time students eligible to claim CWB. The benefit is also enhanced through expansion of both the
maximum amount payable and the introduction of a benefit floor - $3000 per annum for the floor and up to $4000 for maximum benefit - per family.
Additionally, the Canada Revenue Agency - as well as Revenu Québec, following a short negotiation with the province - are now required to administer both the CWB and the STC in real time, delivering automatic bi-weekly payments to all eligible individuals, so long they've filled their tax return for the previous year. Ottawa is also set to strengthen the programme by introducing the so-called "
benefit shield provision" that protects benefit recipients from prohibiting benefit clawbacks in their income increases unexpectedly. Thus, annual CWB entitlement is set to be calculated on the basis on average reported earnings in the last 5 years, paid every 2 weeks. Sudden increases in incomes shall also be excused from the current year's calculation of benefit amounts, applied evenly over the next 5-year calculation period.
Same policy is set to be applied to all other federal benefits and credits, including the Canada Child Benefit - an income-based subsidy for parents - as well as the GST/HST Tax Credit, and the Climate Action Incentive Payment - a rebate paid to households to compensate for the cost of federal price on carbon where one applies.
As an interim measure, Ottawa is also set to introduced the
"marginal earnings shield" policy that allows the Canada Revenue Agency to issue bi-weekly CWB payments to individuals facing prohibitively high marginal rates of personal taxation, whenever the effective rate exceeds 45 per cent. This includes benefit clawbacks from provincial programmes, as well as increased payroll deductions, such as Employment Insurance Premiums, Canada/Québec Pension Plan Contributions, as well as income tax, union dues, or any other payroll deduction from the CRA or Revenu Quebec. Notably, the earnings shield only applied to income bellow the median AFNI for the given province or territory.
Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is to be
introduced to supplement provincial social assistance measures for people with special needs. CDB aims to top-up existing provincial disability support programmes, providing simultaneous supplementation of payment to eligible individuals. The benefit is set to be fully aligned with provincial requirements, but also provide equivalent support to those receiving provincial Workers' Compensation Payments, and CPP/QPP Disability benefits, to bring disable Canadians closer to the national poverty thresholds, with CDB maximum capped at $1000 monthly - that is however subject to inflation indexing.
Expanding Canada's Healthcare
Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) previously announced in the last year's budget is finally being rolled out across the country, following almost a year of bilateral talks with the provinces and territories. The Plan remains open to anyone with a communed household income of bellow $120.000 as well as those without an insurance plan that provides free-at-use dental coverage. In case their income exceeds the eligibility threshold, they'd have to pay an increased premium collected by the CRA as a payroll deduction. Anyone is also free to obtain private dental care insurance, so long they don't have a public one, so long it provides continuous coverage, a fully covers all services provided within a medical facility.
However, even those with private insurance will still have to face the limitations of the Canada Health Act, namely being barred from any preferential treatment for services covered under the CDCP. To further maintain its universality, the Canada Health Act is amended to require every Canadian resident to maintain a valid dental care insurance coverage at all times, with on obligation on both Ottawa and the Provinces to provide access to that coverage to everyone. Private insurance is still allowed, so long it remains equivalent to the public plan, unless covering supplementary services. The respective assessment of a private plan's equivalence and universal coverage is carried out by Heath Canada, through referring the data that every employer is oblige dot provide, linked to each individual's Social Insurance Number.
Notably, the CDCP is administered - as promised - by a neutral agency, comprised of representatives from Health Canada and provincial, as well as territorial heads of ministries of health -- the
Canadian Dental Benefit Administrators (CDBA). CDBA is in turn operates under a two-track system, where the
CDCP Council within the CDBA, comprised of provincial representation, and Health Canada, sets up broader general standards of care, coverage, and premiums, while CDBA provincial offices administer the plan within the framework of general provincial health plans. Principal batches of CDBA are free to diverge from national guidelines on coverage and pricing, so long it doesn't change increase expenditure, and preserves free-at-use coverage without significant reduction in quality of care measured in waiting times or increased pressure on the staff, lower efficacy rates.
Funding through the plan altho provided through general taxation, is calculated as a flat
income-based insurance premiums, deducted from CDCP's recipient paycheque as part of their Income Tax, with additional levies for those making above the eligibility threshold and choosing to enrol into the Plan. While co-pays are absent for lower income earners completely, everyone enrolled into the Plan is protected an annua
l limit for out-of-pocket dental care expenditures, capping spending as a share of one's income, that is also revised annually, in line with instigated payroll premiums.
Canadian Pharmaceutical Insurance Plan (CPIP) finally brings a long-awaited universal
Pharmacare to Canada, especially territories and provinces other than Quebec. While previously Canada's public health insurance plans would only cover in-hospital medical services, leaving prescription drugs largely to the private market, CPIP is set to change that. The Plan provides compressive coverage for multiple prescription drugs defined in a "national formulary" administrated by the
Canada Drug Agency at no cost to every member of the plan, that is tasked with evaluating and authorising the use of new pharmaceuticals to be sold in Canada.
However, CPIP's administration, namely negotiating prices for prescription drugs, is delegated to the
Pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance (
pCPA). Originally created as a strictly provincial initiative to join forcing in procuring pharmaceuticals for public drug plans, pCPA is set to be drastically expanded to negotiate prices for prescriptions on behalf of Canada as a whole.
Thus, no drug that is deemed by the CDA or Health Canada to require a prescription can be sold, until a procurement deal has been reached with the pCPA. When conducting negotiations, pCPA largely relies on already existing framework, with the Canada Drug Agency carrying out impact assessment and drug reviews -- a function previously reserved exclusively to Health Canada. pCPA retains it current institutional design, transitioning to completely independent organisation, only contained by appointments from federal, provincial, and territorial governments, with the final procurement deal requiring consent of Health Canada, CDA, federal and provincial ministries of health.
Trying to resist further increases in drug expenditure, pCPA is authorised to conduct joint funding with the Canada Drug Agency for new drugs, especially biologics and generic medications. Most significantly, however, is the "cost-benefit analysis" framework approach when negotiating drug prices or operating joint investment ventures. The assent is mainly focused on estimating long-term savings to the overall healthcare system, as well as possible impact of patients' ability to re-join the labour force. Thus, procurement expenditures are effetely weighted over long-term savings in the healthcare sector as well as future increase in premiums.
For its end the Government of Canada is set absorb absorb initial cost of running both Pharamacare and the national dental care, while avoiding reductions to federal healthcare transfers, with further increases managed through the Canada Health Transfer and bilateral negotiations with the privies. To avoid further deterioration of Canada's long-term fiscal position Ottawa is offsetting increased spending through phasing out all employer tax credits for health expenditures, as well as tightening eligibility for individual medical tax credits, while closing the readings gap through the CDCP and CPIP payroll premiums.
Canada's Quiet Corporate Reform
Canadian Equity & Debt Recovery Allowance (CEDRA) is set to largely emulate European proposals for the
Debt-Equity Bias Reduction Allowance (DEBRA)733678) to align tax treatment for equity and debit across the tax system. CEDRA provides for a limited deduction of costs associated with issuing new corporate equity, namely stocks and bonds on Canadian stock exchanges.
The allowance is calculated using the year-on-year difference between total corporate equity multiplied by risk-free return on equity, equal to the rate for 10-year Government of Canada bonds. Notably, the deception is fully refundable, up to a maximum for any given year and can be carried forward indefinitely.
Just like its European equivalent, CEDRA provides for higher risk-free rate of return for smaller companies, as opposed to larger players. Higher rate is set to be the sum of the basic rate or return and the spread between interest rates for smaller and large businesses, calculated every year -
CEDRA SMEs. However, unlike DEBRA, the Canadian allowance also provides for even more generous allowance for newer companies, regardless of their size, that is directly proportion to the rate spread between for companies operating for as long as or less 5 years, as opposed to existing incumbents, put on top of the 10-year federal government bonds rate -
CEDRA Trailblazers.
b Notably, companies that qualify for both small and new entry rate deductions are allowed to combined both when calculating their entitlement for any given year.
The Government of Canada also brings a "green spin" the to the deduction, with a designated rate calculation for green businesses -
CEDRA Net Zero. Thus, the gap in interest rates for low- and zero-emission borrowed and fossil fuel companies is set be compounded with the federal 10-year bonds, and then multiplied by the new year-on-year equity increase. Companies are also allowed to combine the "green rate" deduction with the new entry and small company rates so long the applicant is eligible for each of those individually. Companies operating in mining and processing of critical minerals, battery production, as well production of clean energy equipment and more energy-intensive solutions, including software.
CEDRA provides for special
treatment of losses, including those cause by sudden dips in stock prices as a result of monetary tightening or short-selling. While falling short of full refundability, the Government of Canada allows to use deductible equity losses to offset both income and payroll taxes, as well as GST/HST payable for any given year, including carry-back provisions of up to 1 year.
As an additional measure, Canada is
limiting debt interest deductibility for all companies operating in the country. Just like DEBRA, the Canadian allowance caps deductibility of net-interest debt payments - interest spent minus interest received - at the level of 85 per cent, with a maximum of $4 million. In line with European proposals, interest deductibility is additionally limited at 30 per cent of the borrower's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation. Companies would only be able to deduct the lowest amount in a tax year, but would be able to carry the difference forward or back, without indexing to inflation.
As an additional measure, the Budget also reforms the deferral dividend tax credit, including the one for Canadian-Controlled Private Corporations. Now, DTC is available to claim for any dividend payments received from a company incorporated in Canada, that has been operational for 5 years or less -
DTC Trailblazers - or is actively contributing to the the green economy -
DTC Net Zero, including mining and processing of critical minerals, battery production, as well as manufacturing of zero-emission vehicles, suitable materials and clean energy machinery & equipment.
Capital Cost Allowance Green Deduction - allows for full expensing of both machinery & equipment as well business property, for M&E for companies in "green industries", as well as investing in greater energy efficiency of existing industrial structures and equipment, including the cost of full replacement for everyone else. The increased rate also applies to non-mining - with accelerated appreciation maintained for critical minerals - companies of up to 5 years of age.
Canada's New Net Zero Industrial Policy
Investment & Innovation Canada aims to bering several federal crown corporations and business assistance programmes under one roof, operating as a one-stop shop for Canadian businesses. Notably, all entities brought under IIC have their mandrel explicitly promoting competition, namely considering either new market participants or SMEs first, for their investment considerations. Additionally, all participating agencies are set to aim at fulfilling Canada's Net Zero commitment, thrust greater coordination and a more cohesive instrument mix. The agency also aims to provide end-to-end support for Canadian companies across the board, including both setting up, and the scaling up new and existing players, aiming to promote competitive export-oriented companies in critical industries.
Additionally, Investment & Innovation Canada introduces significant restructuring business assistance and subsidy institutions themselves. This mainly involves putting maximum emphasis on the "place economy" aiming to decentralise every member institution to the greater possible extent, tailoring their operations to the needs of a local markets. To avoid further confusion, IIC focuses on setting up highly autonomous local branches, to be combined in one-stop-shop for local businesses, by merging the their branches with
Canada's Regional Development Agencies, and providing them with full operational autonomy, including agencies that were previously managed directly by the Government of Canada.
IIC is set to coordinate and facilitate operations between following crown corporations:
Business Development Canada (BDC) - a
crown corporation tasked with providing capital for Canadian small & medium sized companies, including lending directly to investors to allocate capital to promising companies. Notably, BDC has the scope of their mandate extended, being allowed to provide direct funding to promising companies, as well as new entrants in highly concentrated markets, such as telecommunications, transportation, and banking. Just like EDC, Business Development Canada prioritises support to export-oriented companies.
Export Development Canada (EDC) provides a wide range of export support services and financing, such as risk insurance and direct business guidance, as well access to adorable capital to conduct export operations outside of Canada. Notably, however, under its renewed mandate, EDC is set to also encourage intraprovinical exports to an extent comparable with the support provided to those seeking to enter foreign markets. Equally, EDC has their competences extended to also facilitate overall trade-intensity of Canadian industries, including through increased exposure to imports, both between the provinces and foreign markets. While previously focusing exclusively on promoting overseas sales, the bank of set to roll out equal access to its services to those willing to export into Canada, especially when it comes to components, unfinished products, and intangibles.
Canadian Infrastructure Development Corporation (CIDC) is set to bring together the
Canada Infrastructure Bank, the housing accelerator and developments funds, and other related projects, facilitating the supply of funding to national and local infrastructure projects, including affordable housing and public transit, signifying the first time housing is being considered part of Canada's infrastructure. CIDC also brings the Canada Housing & Mortgage Corporation to the table, as an independent body within the CIDC, largely focused on monitoring the market and providing independent impact assessment. Notably, CIDC is set to be allowed to fund projects that are yet to obtain private commitment, giving a first move advantage, so long the project has received an approved for respective regulatory authorities and indigenous groups affected, or if a project aims at reducing carbon emissions.
Labour Development Canada (LDC) is focused on creating more coherent space for federal labour market policy and workforce development, being tasked with development and screening of both businesses and applications in need additional training, as well as matching businesses struggling to recruit with those seeking a job. LDC is also responsible for administrating the Canadian Job Bank, as well as developing the curriculum and training standards for designated sectors. Notably, the Bank also being grated an explicit rights to enter into commercial agreements with provinces, municipalities, and legal entities providing funding for the private sector to re- and up-skill the local workforce, as well as integrate as many people as possible into the labour market.
As its unique feature, each LDC branch is legally required to maintain employee and business representation, with the need for unanimous consent when developing and implementing new measures. Notably, this includes local unions, business associations, and advocacy organisations in the region.
Initial funding the bank is set to be maintained under the Labour Market Development Agreements as well Workforce Development Agreements between Ottawa and the provinces, however the LDC is expected run a "structural surplus" for its existing programmes through employee and employer payroll deductions negotiated under each programme respectively. Therefore only using discretionary federal and provincial spending when operating federal or provincial programmes and launching new initiatives.
Labour Development Canada is also allowed to compete directly with employment agencies and directly administer federal programmes such as the Canada Summer Jobs, while pursuing it mandate: to maximise labour force participation and increase Canada's labour productivity, while increasing access to suitable permanent jobs above the federal poverty line.
Advanced Research & Innovation Canada (ARIC) provides
all-in-support for research and development projects aiming at achieving a Net Zero Economy. ARIC brings together the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and the National Research Council, and the Canada Research Chambers and
Canada Growth Fund itself to provide end-to-end support for new green technology. While the Canada Foundation for Innovation provides funding for university research, the Canada Research Chairs brings the human expertise to ARIC, with the National Research Council supporting industrial and company-based business R&D. The Canada Growth Fund, on the other hand aims to provide funding for scale-ups in the green space and innovative sectors, mainly through comprehensive risk sharing and direct lending to existing projects. Unlike other agencies, CGF also has an explicit mandate to support funding for Net Zero and facilitate the acquisition of intellectual property by Canadian enterprises as well as support the creation of new IP by Canadians and in Canada. However, CGF is also being allowed to directly fund industrial research and development to expand accessibility of existing green technology, even where private sector funding has not yet been committed.
Aerospace Development Canada (ADC) delivers direct funding, for R&D and skills in the
aerospace sector, as well as providing assistance with training, talent attraction, retention, and initial funding for the aerospace industry. ADC is allowed to also directly fund university research and eduction for those working in the aerospace industry.
Automation & Robotics Canada (ARC) focuses on
supporting wider use of automaton and robotics across the Canadian economy. ARC specifically allows companies to obtain a rebate for their M&E expenses, as well as receive a loan or a grant to modernise existing equipment, or replace, expand existing industrial assets. SMEs can recuperate up to
110 per cent of their M&E expenses with ARC, and over 125 per cent when it comes to automating their processes and installing newer software. Notably, ARC is set to operate in parallel with the Canada Digital Adoption Program.
Agri-Foods Canada (AFC) administers programs when it comes to agricultural and foods production, focusing on providing funding for agricultural research, and development of new products, chemicals, processing methods, and crops that utilise that are more environmentally suitable.
While major business assistance programmes remain within the realm of the federal ISED, IIC is allowed to administer those directly and change their structure, so long associate costs are borne by the IIC institutions themselves. Programmes immediately transferred under the responsibility of IIC include the Canada Digital Adoption Program (CDAP), the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP). Notably, however, IIC uses several other finical instruments to carry out its mandate:
- Income-Contingent Grants - grants funded directly by the CIB, with a subsequent return of funds. Unlike standard loans, ISGs are paid by the borrower as a share of their future income, until the debt is fully repaid - or written off by mutual agreement of both parties.
- Investment Supplementary Funding - provides financing provided by an IIC institution in proportion to investments from the private sector. Thus, for every $2 of private investment in a particular project or company, ISF guarantees at least $1 of investment from the CIB, subject to an appropriate agreement with the recipient company.
- Comprehensive Liabilities Guarantee - allow IIC to insure the assets of external investors - and the company itself - in a specific project or company in exchange for risk premiums from potential recipients. So, if the project will lead to losses for investors, IIC will return the funds spent.
- Outcome-Oriented Financing is the broadest possible definition of bank financial guarantees, which are fulfilled when certain conditions are met by the recipient. OOF may involve the direct financing, creation, write-off or investment, deferment, freezing - and so on - of the financial obligations of the borrower, in exchange for the achievement of certain indicators. First of all, we are talking about achieving predetermined growth rates of productivity - both labor and multifactorial - or such indicators as reducing the levels of debt burden, higher capital and science intensity, as well as interaction with external markets.
- Bridging Finance - bridge financing provided either in crisis situations or at an early stage of the project, when existing agreements with investors already exist, it is not possible to access short-term financing or funds necessary for the implementation of the initial stage of the project.
- Pooled Securitisation - financing of joint projects carried out by several small companies at once, with the accompanying distribution of risks. PS also covers the placement of assets on public markets.
Following the re-structuring the Government of Canada also expands funding for the Competition Bureau, and the Competition & Markets Commission of Canada. Namely, both are receiving additional functions, of overseeing the federal business assistance regime through the
Canadian Business Assistance Office (CBAO) -- an independent standalone parliamentary institution. CBAO is tasked with evaluating the performance of business assistance programmes and institutions, including IIC and its member bodies, as well as any business investment made by the Government of Canada, though annual programme reviews and recommendations. Notably, the Office can order the Competition Bureau and the CMCC to investigate specific cases, as well as conduct joined programme reviews.
As on overriding set of criteria, the Office is set to evaluate how existing government programmes measure against increasing competition in a marketplace - being required to prioritise companies of 5 years of younger, as well as SMES - and foster finically independent enterprise - defined a profitability over the 5 year period excusing government assistance -, as well as help to achieve the Net Zero goal.
The Office is set to also maidan regional representation, aimed at scrutinising Regional Development Agencies, each branched aimed at a respective RDA, with a representative from CBAO and a respective provincial or territorial legislative assembly.
To further strengthen the accountability regime, the Budget amends respective acts relating to the Business Development Canada, Export Development Canada, National Research Council, Regional Development Agencies, and the Canada Infrastructure Development Canada's constituent units, as well as an additional overarching mandate for the Investment & Innovation Canada.
Thus, all the parties affected now have to comply with a
"dual" mandate oversseen by the CBAO. Apart from fulfilling their original duty, such as infrastructure development, export promotion, or investment in green tech, all the agencies ought to remain finically profitable indecent of public support, defined all persistent surplus over the 5-year horizon.
In turn, the agencies are allowed to earn income through repayable grants, equity stakes, as well as acquisition of assets, such as intellectual property, and issuance of
Canada Development & Innovation Bonds. CDIBs are set to be equated to the Government of Canada bills, with Ottawa directly guaranteeing the ability of an issuer to service their debts. Notably, each issuance has to be authorised by the IIC, before a respective institution can act on its own.

2023.05.30 22:37 chuckhustmyre [TH] MIRROR IMAGE by Chuck Hustmyre
Sometimes when you look into the mirror, the mirror looks back.
William Bailey's forehead shattered the mirror like a sledgehammer. The last thing he remembered before he blacked out was the feeling that he was falling through the mirror. Sub-cranial hematoma, a concussion, maybe even a cracked skull--that had to be the reason for the strange feeling. The mirror was mounted on the wall just to the right of the bar, four feet tall by about three feet wide. As consciousness slipped away, common sense and his strong belief in the rational world told him that he couldn't fall through the mirror. He must have bounced his head off the wall and be falling toward the floor.
It seemed like just a second or two before William's eyes popped open. He lay on his back, on the hard wood floor of Fausto's, with Johnny Davis towering over him. Big Johnny probably wanted to finish him off, maybe kill him, and finally end their twenty-year-old feud. Either Big Johnny Davis and the ceiling lights above him were spinning, or William's head was spinning, but either way something wasn't right.
He raised his head and looked to his left, toward the bar. Except the bar wasn't there. Instead, he was staring at the bathrooms. That didn't make sense. It must be his brain that had gotten spun around. William turned his head and peered over his size-ten wingtips at the busted mirror. The wooden frame and most of the glass still clung to the wall, the rest sat broken on the ground. The bar had to be on his left. He looked again, and still saw the bathrooms. A brain bruise, maybe some fluid pressure building up might be the cause of it.
"Get up!" Big Johnny Davis said.
William looked up at him. Johnny stood behind him, just beyond his shoulders. Perfect place for him to stomp my head into the plank floor. Except Johnny Davis was holding out his hand.
"Come on, we've got to get out of here."
Davis looked scared. It was the first time William Bailey could ever remember Johnny Davis looking scared. William had always been scared of Big Johnny, but Big Johnny wasn't scared of anything or anyone.
Police sirens wailed in the distance.
Johnny glanced over his shoulder. William craned his neck to look where Johnny was looking, saw he was staring at the front door like a man terrified something bad was going to come through it. Big Johnny looked down at him again and pumped his hand. "Come on, get up. They'll be here any second."
"Who?" William asked. "Who'll be--" But before he finished, Big Johnny Davis reached down, grabbed him by both arms, and jerked him to his feet.
As he was dragged toward the door by the only man in town who truly hated him, William glanced up and saw the rusted metal sign nailed above the door. He had to have a concussion, probably severe; that had to be it, because the letters on the sign were backward. It said TUO.
As Johnny Davis pulled him out the door, William heard tires skid on the pavement.
"Where's your car?" Johnny asked.
William twisted away from the big man's grip, then turned to his left. "In the alley." He started to run, still not sure exactly what he was running from.
Behind him, Big John shouted, "The alley's over here."
William kept running but turned his head back toward Johnny. "I know where the alley--"
Something hit him across the midsection and toppled him to the ground. He got his hands up just in time to break his fall and managed to keep his head from slamming into the sidewalk. When he looked up he saw a shopping cart tumbled onto its side.
Once again, William found himself lying flat on his back, this time amid the spilled contents of the cart. It had been filled with junk: paper bags full of dirty clothes, canned food, bags of potato chips, a diamond shaped, orange road sign, and other trash that looked like it had been collected from back alley garbage bins.
The homeless man who'd been pushing the cart was scrawny, and wafer thin. His skin was the color of old shoe leather, and he wore a long gray beard, tangled and matted with food and bits of filth. He was sprawled on the ground next to his cart, half sitting up, staring at William with his bright blue eyes.
Car doors slammed, men shouted.
"You better get going," the homeless man said, as he cocked his head. "The police after you?"
Police!
Before William could assure the old man that the police weren't after him--he was a respected businessman and family man--someone behind him grabbed him under both arms and pulled him to his feet. William turned and found himself staring into the face of Johnny Davis. "The alley's that way," Johnny said, pointing to the other side of Fausto's. With one hand gripping William's jacket, Johnny dashed across the front of the bar toward the alley. The alley--right there, plain as day--on the other side of Fausto's, right where it shouldn't be, where it couldn't be. William had been here a thousand times. As you stepped out of the bar, the alley was on the left, Brockton's Ace Hardware on the right. Now everything was mixed up and in the wrong place.
Johnny Davis turned down the alley, dragging William behind him. After just a few steps, a spotlight flashed in front of them.
"Stop!" a voice commanded. "Get on the ground."
William couldn't see because Johnny was in his way. "Who's that yelling?" he asked.
Big Johnny stopped and William plowed into his back.
"Get on the ground," the voice boomed again.
William poked his head out from behind Johnny Davis's back. The blinding white light was in his face. He couldn't see a thing.
POP! POP! POP!
Gunshots.
Big Johnny sagged, then crashed to his knees. Instinctively, William bent forward and grabbed hold of Johnny. "What's the matter?"
More pops.
Johnny's big hand reached out and shoved William back toward the street. "Back door," he wheezed, then plunged forward onto his face.
William stood alone. Behind the white spotlight he saw blue police lights flashing. He was totally exposed.
POP! POP!
He saw flashes--little yellow spurts of flame--as something tugged at his jacket.
William had said "back door." What back door? Fausto's had a back door, but it didn't lead anywhere except to the open space behind the building used for trash and deliveries. Twenty feet of asphalt between the bar and the back of the building on the next block. William had parked his car at the end of the alley, but the police cars--or whatever they were--had the alley blocked off. The building behind Fausto's also had an alley that ran alongside it, but the owner had closed it off to keep the bums out. He'd put up a gate, padlocked it, and topped it with razor wire. It was a dead end.
Two more pops. Dead end or not it was better than standing here and getting shot. William turned and ran. He burst through the front door of Fausto's, dashed through the bar, past the shattered mirror, hit the back door at a dead run, and was outside behind the bar within seconds.
He could see the tail end of his car sticking out from the corner of the building, but with the cops blocking the alley, his car was useless to him. William glanced across the open space to the alley that ran next to the other building. The gate, the padlock, the razor wire--all still in place. To his right an overflowing garbage dumpster sat beside the back of Fausto's, jammed against the fire ladder.
The fire ladder.
An iron ladder bolted to the cinderblock wall.
William looked up. The top of the ladder was lost in shadow, but he knew it went up two stories to the roof. Last summer, when the toilet had stopped up, he'd come out back to take a leak and had stood behind the dumpster, peeing against the wall like a kid, one hand draped over the bottom rung of the ladder.
He slipped behind the dumpster. The smell made him gag. The bottom of the ladder was four feet from the ground. William reached up as high as he could, grabbed hold of the third rung, then hauled himself up.
Through the partially open back door came the sounds of heavy feet pounding on the hard wood floor of the bar.
Halfway up the ladder, he was exhausted--and scared. Shaking, he white-knuckled the ladder. Being more than ten feet off the ground terrified him. He needed a break, just a second or two to catch his breath. There was enough moonlight so he could see into one of the second story windows. Inside, junk was piled everywhere. Old barstools, a busted jukebox, furniture stacked almost to the ceiling. Years ago, old man Fausto lived on the second floor, but Jake, who'd bought the place from the old man and had decided to keep the name, used it for storage.
Below him, William heard the back door thrown open so hard it banged against the wall. He scrambled up until he reached the top of the ladder, then hoisted himself over the edge of the roof. Down on the ground a voice shouted, "There he is, up there."
Another gunshot. What the hell was going on?
The unmistakable sound of feet--fast feet, in shape feet, boot shod feet--scurrying up the ladder. Standing on the tar and pebble roof, William glanced around for something he could use as a weapon, shocked he was even thinking of such a thing. A five gallon plastic bucket was all there was. It stood upright, filled with rainwater. He picked it up and peered over the edge. A uniformed policeman was three quarters of the way up the ladder. Two more cops were right behind him.
William looked at the heavy bucket in his hands, thought about just dumping the water onto them but knew it wouldn't stop them. There was only one way to stop them, and that was to knock them off the ladder. He thought about warning them, maybe trying to scare them away. But they were cops. You couldn't scare them away.
So why had they shot Johnny Davis, and why were they shooting at him?
The first officer looked up and saw William staring down at him with the bucket in his hands. Their eyes locked for just a second and the cop stopped. In those eyes that stared back at him, William saw an almost maniacal determination that sent a shiver down his spine. The officer held his grip on the ladder with his right hand while his left dropped to the pistol resting in his gleaming leather holster. In one smooth motion he drew his gun and raised it toward William.
William Bailey tossed the bucket down the ladder. A shot rang out an instant before the heavy bucket thudded into the cop's head. Like a gruesome traffic accident happening before his eyes, William couldn't help but watch as the policeman fell, taking his two partners down with him. The last thing William saw before he turned away was a jumbled heap of black uniforms resting on the concrete below the ladder.
* * *
Hiding in the shadow of a telephone booth, thinking. Home. He had to get home. Had to get back to Marge and the kids. Maybe somehow he could explain what had happened. Vincent, his attorney, he would know what to do--maybe--but he was a civil lawyer not a criminal attorney. He wrote contracts and did personal injury on the side; he didn't get people out of jail who'd killed a cop by dropping a bucket of water on his head and knocking him and his buddies off the side of a building.
As the cab he'd been waiting for pulled up, William stepped out from the dark and climbed into the back seat.
The driver turned around. "Where to?"
William pulled the door shut. "Uptown. 1721 Audubon Court."
"Fare's gonna be about fifteen dollars. After dark, I gotta have the money up front."
"What?"
"Company policy." The cabbie shrugged. "A lot of drivers been getting stiffed."
William opened his wallet, pulled out a twenty and handed it across the seat. The driver took it and almost slipped it into his cash box, then took a second look at the bill. His face tightened. "What the hell is this?"
"Huh?"
With the bill stretched between his hands, the cabbie stared at it for a second then looked up at William. "You're either the dumbest counterfeiter who ever lived or you've been had."
"What you are talking about?"
The driver faced the bill toward William but didn't hand it back to him. "It's printed backwards."
William looked at the twenty-dollar bill in the man's hand. It looked like--it was--an almost brand new bill, nothing wrong with it as far as he could tell.
"Get out of my cab," the driver said.
William didn't know what the man was talking about but knew he didn't want to get out. This cab was his only way home. He reached for the twenty. "If you don't like that one I've got another--"
The driver pulled his hands away. "I ain't giving this back. I got to turn it in to the police." He dropped one hand behind his seat back, then came up clutching a pistol, an old German Luger by the looks of it, the muzzle aimed straight at William's face. "In fact, I bet they give me a reward if I bring you in with it."
William jerked the door handle and rolled out into the street. He sprang to his feet and ran, the driver's yells just background noise. Has everyone gone crazy or is it just me?
Home. He had to get home.
* * *
Rain. Driving, relentless rain. William was just two blocks from Fausto's. In two hours, that's as far as he'd gotten--one block an hour. Police cars prowled the neighborhood, shinning spotlights into every nook and cranny, lighting up every shadow. Everyone in Fausto's knew his name. He'd been going there three or four nights a week after work for years. The cabbie had his address. William had given it to him when he told the hack driver where to drop him.
Ten o'clock at night, with nowhere to go and no way to get there, William sat behind the closed Goodwill store, under an overhang that barely kept the rain off of him.
Huddled in the dark, head sunk between his knees, he hadn't heard anyone approach.
"You don't look so good."
Startled, William looked up, prepared to run again. It was the homeless man he'd knocked over outside the bar. The one with the shopping cart and the leathery skin. William relaxed a little. "Excuse me?"
The man pushed his cart closer. "You're not supposed to be here."
William looked around. "Why not?"
The old man grinned, half his teeth gone.
William found it nearly impossible to tell his age. The guy could be forty and maybe had lived a hard life, or perhaps he was a well-preserved seventy, pickled by a lifetime of booze. William waved him off, expecting a plea for money. "I can't help you."
The old man stopped just a few feet away. "Everything's out of place isn't it?" He had a strange lilting voice. Almost like an accent.
And he was right. Everything was out of place--from Johnny Davis to the cab driver--everything was wrong.
Strapped to the back of the old man's shopping cart was a plastic sign about the size of a loaf of bread. William recognized the sign, the words, the colors, the logo of a local supermarket chain, all were familiar to him, but the letters were backward, unreadable.
Rainwater ran down William's face. He pointed to the sign. "Why's it written like that?"
The old man looked at the sign then back at William. "Like what?" he said, then shuffled away behind his basket.
* * *
The rain came down even harder. William slouched in a darkened doorway across the street from Fausto's. Nothing made sense. Everything was messed up, backward, out of whack. Almost like this wasn't his home, like he was a stranger seeing it for the first time.
But that was crazy. He'd grown up here, gone to Brother Martin High School, dated Jenny Underhill who went to Cabrini, lost her to Johnny Davis, then got her back only to lose her again the first year of college to some kid who drove a Mustang. Two years later William married Marge at Saint Luke's. They had two kids.
This town was his home. He recognized it. He knew the people here, Big Johnny and Zeke, the bartender at Fausto's. But things were different, little things. John Davis for one. In trying to help him, the big man had gotten himself killed. That wasn't John Davis--at least not the one William Bailey had known since seventh grade. Everything looked the same but wasn't. Nothing was quite right.
But they knew him--or someone like him.
A strange sensation crept over him that made the hair on the back of his neck rise. Maybe he didn't belong here. Maybe everything wasn't as it appeared. Maybe this wasn't his home. But if that were true, then whose home was it? Another thought, even scarier seeped through his brain. If he was here, who was there--at his home?
Crazy.
William dropped his head into his hands. Just considering such nonsense was a waste of time. Yet, here he was scanning the street, thinking of going back inside Fausto's, back to that mirror.
Not much time to think about it. The bar closed at three AM and it was already two-thirty. When he'd left--run for his life with Big Johnny--most of the mirror was still in the frame hanging on the wall.
Something about that damned mirror.
But Fausto's was dangerous, so a couple of hours ago William had found another mirror. In the men's room of a twenty-four hour gas station. The Chevron on North Rampart.
He had approached it cautiously, afraid he was going mad. As he peered over the sink into the mirror, he saw what he always saw, his own reflection. Holding up his left hand, he looked at the image in the mirror, at the watch strapped to his wrist. He noticed that the man in the mirror wore his watch on his right hand. Just the opposite.
William stood in the gas station bathroom for twenty minutes before he worked up his nerve. Finally, he took a deep breath, leaned back, then slammed his forehead into the dirt-streaked mirror. The glass shattered and cut his head. Blood dribbled off the tip of his nose into the sink. His reflection stared out at him from the other side of the mirror, blood running down his face, too.
I have gone crazy!
So the gas station hadn't worked out. Ducking police cruisers, William had wandered the streets, his head reeling. What was he doing?
On the sidewalk, he found a sopping wet magazine that the wind had blown up against the side of a newspaper machine. The cover caught his eye. He picked it up. It was printed backwards, the letters reversed, words running right to left. The spine was on the right. As he flipped through the pages, he couldn't read a thing. Then William had an idea.
In the bathroom of an all night restaurant he held the wet magazine up to the mirror. Perfect. The reflected image was normal, spine on the left, words running left to right, all the letters printed correctly. He could read it clearly. But what did it mean?
Then he drove his head into that mirror. The glass cracked. Someone walked in, a skinny waiter wearing an apron. He stood gawking as William leaned over the sink with tears of pain filling his eyes.
The waiter looked at the broken mirror, then jabbed a finger at William's bloody forehead. "What the hell are you doing?"
"An accident," he mumbled, pressing his fingers against the fresh cut.
The waiter turned. "I'm calling the cops."
William Bailey ran.
Now he was huddled in the rain staring at Fausto's across the street. Because he had nowhere else to go.
He stood and walked toward Fausto's. When he was halfway across the street, a police car glided around the corner, headlights reflecting off the wet pavement. The cops in no hurry, just cruising. William forced himself to keep walking, not to run. One foot in front of the other. In the downpour, odds were that the cops wouldn't even recognize him.
But they did recognize him.
The police car slid to a stop as its high beams clicked on and its blue strobe lights started popping. Both front doors flew open.
Like a sinner seeking the sanctuary of a church, William ran straight for Fausto's door. As he burst inside, Zeke looked up from behind the bar. "William! What the hell are you doing here?"
He ignored the bartender, running right past him, eyes focused on the broken mirror and its busted frame hanging on the wall.
Zeke again, "The cops been looking all over for you. Say you killed two officers and--"
Behind him the front door banged against the wall. "Police!" a voice behind him commanded. "Stop."
But William didn't stop. He kept running--running straight for the mirror. Reflected in its fragmented pieces he saw two uniformed police officers behind him, heard their boots pounding on the wooden floor. Just ten feet separated him from the mirror. At full speed he took two strides then dove. He stretched his arms out overhead and tucked his chin into his chest as his feet left the floor.
He felt one hand hit wall and the other strike broken glass. Then his head hit. More glass cracked, more skin split.
Darkness.
* * *
William's eyes popped open. He was staring at the ceiling. Rough voices, even rougher hands. They rolled him over onto his stomach and jerked his arms behind his back. He felt cold steel on his wrists and heard the metallic ratcheting as the handcuffs tightened and bit into his skin.
He tilted his head up and rested his chin against the floor. Blood poured down the side of his face; he watched it pool on the floor then seep between the wooden planks. By rolling his eyes up he could just see the empty spot on the wall where the mirror had hung. Lying on the floor, three feet from his head, was the broken frame and the rest of the glass.
The two cops grabbed his arms and yanked him to his feet, sending waves of pain through his shoulders and wrists. As they spun him toward the door, one of the officers said, "You're under arrest."
"Why?" William asked.
The officer pressed his face into William's. "Murdering your family for starters."
"My...my family." William felt his stomach cinch and his bowels turn to ice. A thought he'd had earlier in the night echoed inside his head. If he was here, who was there--at his home.
As the cops dragged him across the floor, William glanced up and saw the rusted metal sign nailed above the door.
OUT.
He was home.

2023.05.30 22:29 randomducker OBD2 finally arrived!! Thoughts on Leafspy readings
| So after waiting nearly 2 months, I've finally got my hands on a working OBD2. I've included some images from Leafspy, and would appreciate feedback. Background: I bought the car as a Japanese import from a local dealer. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the OBD2 I purchased before buying the car to work with Leafspy, so essentially I rolled the dice based on 61,500km driven and 10 bars for this December 2016 30kwh model. As far as I can figure, the software update has been done, it's unfortunately had it's fair share of quick charges, and I believe the battery looks to be relatively well balanced (correct me if I'm wrong). After 3,000km since picking up the car it dropped to 9 bars (consistent with what I've read about the SOH around 72% dropping from 10 to 9), however I am a little concerned as to how many more km I could conservatively expect to get out of the Leaf considering it's an every day town car averaging 9.0km per kWh. All thoughts and opinions welcomed 😃 submitted by randomducker to leaf [link] [comments] |
2023.05.30 22:10 thislife84 Friend selling on lien 2022 Prius Nightshade FWD for $28K
My friend is selling her 2022 Prius Nightshade FWD edition with 20K miles for $28K. The KBB range is from $32,716-$34,864 for Private Party with an average of $33,800. She said the Toyota dealer offered her $28K and would sell it to me at that price. I did a quick search and found a car with very similar specs selling for $28,999 through cars.com at a private dealership in same city (Los Angeles, CA). Cars.com showed that the average market value for that car is around $28.25K-$39K.
When test driving the car over the weekend she told me the car was on lien, which would have been nice to know before seeing the car as I feel like it’ll be a longer process to get the title. Also, I did feel and hear a little roughness from the front brakes, which my girlfriend who was in the car did not feel. Also, when test driving the car we saw a flashing yellow triangle. Because she is selling it for so below market value and I don’t know if this is something I should even ask to get checked out.
Currently, I drive a 2001 Honda LX with 221K miles and have had it for 13 years. I’m pretty basic when it comes to cars and don’t need bells and whistles. My heart is set on a Prius and have been searching since last year. I’ve been waiting for the market to ease up and budgeting to spend $23K-$26K (including taxes and registration) on a car. I have seen cars in this prices range but are 2018-2021 with 35K-50K miles with more standard features.
This car is outside my budget, as it would cost me $30K in the end because of taxes and registration. However, I do have the money for it. Also, the car definitely has more sophisticated features (leather seats, seat warmers, wireless phone charger etc) that I am not use to and makes me feel like its too much car. Also, I feel like these features would be costly to maintain when years go by and they start having issues. But the car does seem like a good deal and feel torn about it.
My friend did say to me that the car’s registration is due on Friday and doesn’t want to pay for it if I buy. However, because I’ll be paying some sort of registration when the title is transferred to me, I feel like I would be paying double on registration. Plus, the car is still on lien and most likely won’t be getting the titled until a few weeks when she pays back the lien. Really feel like it’s not my responsibility since the title is still under her name and that I’ll be paying my own registration on the car when transferring title under me my name.
I feel so torn because of how good of a deal it is. Such a big decision that I am having trouble deciding. Would appreciate feedback! Thank you in advance!

2023.05.30 20:38 DoomGoober Old Town Sacramento(ish) + Sacramento County Fair Trip Report
Took a day and a half trip to Sacramento! Easy two hour drive from the Peninsula. I'm not from Sacramento though I used to visit a lot, apologies for any mistakes or wrong opinions.
- California Railroad Museum: Lives up to the hype. Great museum, with immersive ceiling to floor exhibits, interesting info, and, of course, TRAINS! It's very California/History specific and more about the impact of trains on CA history than about how trains work specifically, but there's a bit of that. Beware: The one train that has sleeper rooms rocks back and forth to simulate the train moving. My wife got seasick from it. (I loved it!) Also, don't forget to visit the the fourth floor.
- Old Sacramento State Historic Park: You really need a guided tour or watch some history videos on YouTube to get the most out of this place. There's a lot of cool facts but you will need to find it yourself or through a tour. This old PBS show has a decent overview: https://youtu.be/Bd4PM8UV5Hw
- Fanny Ann's Saloon: Came here for the "ambiance" over lunch. I could see this place being rocking at night for the bar crowd, but for lunch it's just a funky place with "meh" food. There are pinball and arcade machines and decent amounts of seating.
- Top Hand Ranch Horse Carriage Rides: Since the temperature was moderate and the horses seemed happy, we took a $20, 15 minute ride around Old Town. My kids loved it. It was super calm and uneventful but fun to be so close to people walking around. The ride was a little bouncy even on the paved streets, hard to imagine riding faster on dirt roads.
- Old Town: Pretty touristy. But some of them are really nice tourist traps! Shout outs to Evangeline's Costume for having funky "gifts" and being fairly reasonably priced. Cerealism was kind of funky and not bad (food themed around cereal) and Blueprint Coffee was a nice sleek modern coffee shop. Did not love Boxcar for froyo, overpriced, could have gone for better ice cream but kids wanted it now! Ferris wheel is worth it for the views of Tower Bridge and Old Town, though it goes really fast (speed wise.)
- DOCO: "Newer" style shopping district near the Sacramento King's stadium (some concert was there too). Mostly focused around eating with some light shopping. Made the mistake of walking past DOCO up K street towards the Capital and... it's a ghost town. A drunk guy called us a racial slur and accused us of smelling like vomit. Then a random guy was sitting there swinging a claw hammer around and we decide to go over to Capital Mall where it felt safer.
- State Capital: Very nice, beautiful place, nice architecture. Make sure to check out the "back" where there's a park and war memorial. Sadly, museum and main building were closed by the time we got there.
- Frank Fat's: This place is an institution and we had to try it. The décor is something else and the back booths are very private. The bar and front room, less so, we were practically sitting in the laps of the table next to us. The food is NOT TRADITIONAL CHINESE FOOD. You don't go for that: You go for the California/Chinese historic fusion of food. It's pretty interesting to see how Chinese food would have evolved over time as it intermingled with American palettes and ingredients (and older school cooking methods.) Make reservations in advance, they were turning people away who didn't have reservations. I enjoyed it.
- Sutter's Fort: Pretty small, but really gives you an idea of what living permanently in California would have been like (assuming you weren't Native American) before the gold rush. Sadly, the Donner Party Doll was not viewable as it's deteriorating fast and needs to be restored and taken off display. Each room is decorated to look like it might have during that historic period. There's a bunch of written information and a little hand out with each room labeled. The park rangers are very engaged as well, so feel free to ask questions.
- Sacramento County Fair: A pretty typical CA county fair, dominated by carnival out front. Nice they have a kid specific building and they have more demonstrations than my county fair (like racing ducks, racing pigs, or frisbee dogs, and horse and rider costume events.) Pretty low key like many CA county fairs that aren't in Southern CA. I loved the Demolition Derby where cars smash each other until they can't drive. Overall, I'd say the Sacramento County Fair is better than most Northern California County fairs out of the handful I've been to, but doesn't quite stand up to OC or LA County Fair. I wish I could have seen the Rodeo, but our schedule didn't work out.
- Yang Kee Dumpling (Davis, not Sacramento): Very good Chinese dumplings. The skin of the dumplings is a little thick, but everything tastes very good. Gets crowded on weekends, join the Yelp Waitlist. It's kind of a back building to the Safeway parking lot so it's a little odd to find.
Overall, a good 1.5 day getaway to Sacramento. Still a lot we didn't see (Crocker, Stanford, State Indian Museum, etc.) And last time we were here, we went to Locke with the kids, which is a blast if you're into Chinese in CA history.
Please let me know if I got anything wrong!
