Memory transcription subject: Lemva, Venlil Archeologist
Date [standardized human time]: July 13, 2165
The attendant, Harold, had told me that there would be another passenger boarding shortly several minutes ago, and since then I couldn't keep still wondering who I was going to meet.As I sat on the couch, I couldn’t help but eavesdrop on the conversation that Harold had just started with the other passenger. As I heard a new voice respond to Harold’s greeting my heart started beating faster. Wait, the voice sounded familiar…
My heart rate quickened as footsteps came closer down the hallway.A man wearing a black suit and indigo tie came walking around the corner and my heart fluttered a little as I looked up at his face.
“Lemva?”
“James?” I squeaked as I said his name. I jumped up off the couch and ran toward him, throwing my arms around him and nearly knocking him over. “Lemva!”
Looking up at him, I realized what I had just done, backing off slightly embarrassed. “James! I haven’t seen you in so long, what have you been up to?”
“Looking into ancient history, studying declassified documents, bringing back ancient history, that sorta thing.” James kneeled slightly and looked at me with a wide smile, I’d missed that smile so much. He opened his mouth to speak. “I wasn’t expecting to see you on this flight. It’s very good to see you!” “It’s good to see you too! So you’re one of the others that the UN’s invitation spoke of.” “It seems that way, yeah.” He chuckled slightly.
“I see you two are getting along well! I don’t even have to introduce you.” I realized Harold had been standing there watching the interaction the whole time. I straightened myself out, even more embarrassed than before. Harold chuckled. “Alright you two, we’re going to be taking off shortly. I’ll be in the cabin along with the captain. If you need me, press these buttons.” He handed us both a device with a singular blue button labeled “call”.
The man turned around and headed through the door leading to the cockpit. Leaving us alone. We both sat on a couch. James spoke, “So, do you know anything about the job being offered?” “I was going to ask you the same thing.” “Hmm, well we’re going to be in for a long flight, may as well catch up on some things.”
Me and James had known each other since we attended MIK, and had a lot of history. We met in the college’s history club, and quickly became friends. We both had a passion for learning about things that most others had forgotten, and theorizing about what life was like in ancient times. He didn’t know it but I had a huge crush on him at the time.
We stayed in contact long after we both got our doctorates, despite the large distances between us. Eventually James suddenly stopped contacting me, I never understood why. I had worried that it was something I did, that I had pushed him away. Then, after a while, he faded from memory, only existing in the back of my mind. I needed to know why. But not now, this was too soon.
“I know I already asked what you’ve been up to since we last spoke, but still. Discovered anything new?”
“Yeah, I got my hands on some recently declassified Fed info and artifacts around 8 months back. Studied them and found out they were ancient Gojid pottery, inscriptions described some sort of fertility god? Found some other inscriptions describing the site of an ancient Gojid city on The Cradle and got in contact with a dig team to go search there. Hit the motherlode and-” He spoke so enthusiastically about his findings. Just seeing him so happy about his work made me bloom, but thankfully he didn’t notice as he kept talking, waving his hands to emphasize his words. “-trying to find a museum that has the room for all of them.”
“Wow, that’s a lot more than what I’ve been doing.” “Really? Lemva hasn’t done anything interesting lately? I find that hard to believe.” James took on an amused expression. “Yes, really. I’ve been on vacation with my family for a little while, that’s all. It had been a while since I’d seen them.”
I could see his smile visibly lessen, he shifted his eyes, seeming to be deep in thought. Had I said something wrong? “Hey, are you okay?” I asked. “Yeah, I’m fine. Your mention of family brought back some… memories.” A singular tear formed below his left eye, before he looked away. I didn’t want to push, despite his failed attempt at hiding his sadness. “Oh, we can change the subject if you want.”
He wiped his eyes and shuddered, before straightening himself out. “No, it’s ok. You should probably know anyway. It’s part of the reason I haven’t talked to you in so long.” I was hoping to get some answers but now I didn’t know if I wanted to if it was making him this upset.
“A- alright, go ahead. You can stop at any time if you want to.” “Before I start I want to say how sorry I am for ghosting you.” He closed his eyes, inhaling and exhaling deeply. A somber expression filled his face as he opened his eyes. “Okay. You know my parents right? Bill and Angene?” “Yeah?” “A couple years back, I was doing a small job for a little town on Nishtal. Not much pay but that didn’t matter. This was during the time when the anti-human movement was in full effect.”
My heart stopped, I immediately knew where this was going.
“I wasn’t worried for them cause they were on Earth. I thought they would be away from the violence because the rioters would be too scared to be among so many ‘predators.’” His voice dripped with malice as he spat out the last word. He was always treated… differently from other people. Even so long after the war, “predator” hate was still common. He kept speaking. “Clearly I was wrong, or maybe one of those fucking rioters hated us too much to care about their own safety.” I only now noticed that he had been shaking as he spoke, but he suddenly stopped. He looked defeated, on the verge of a breakdown. “They were just bringing home groceries, that’s all. They were friendly and happy and polite and all they were doing was bringing home some things for dinner. But because they had committed the
SIN of being born with forward facing eyes everyone hated them.” “On the phone the next day, I was told that my parents had been stabbed to death when walking home. I had to attend their funeral several days later, and that night the police took me in to meet their murderer. It took every ounce of energy that I could muster to not turn their disgusting little face to orange mulch.”
If anyone else had looked at James’ face at that moment, they would have seen nothing but a rabid animal looking for something to rip apart, but I didn’t see that. I saw a man that just wanted his parents back, a man that wished the world didn’t hate him. James crumpled over and started sobbing violently, and without thinking I got up and gave him the biggest hug my small arms could allow. He wrapped his muscular arms around me and buried his head into my wool, his sobs shaking my whole body. I stroked the back of his head in an attempt to comfort him, and tried doing those shushing sounds that human mothers do to calm down their children but ended up making a strange sputtering sound instead. I heard the sounds of giggling interspersed with the sobbing, leading into a fit of coughing from James. He lifted his face from my shoulder and stared into my eyes, still dripping tears but starting to smile now. He rested his chin back on my shoulder, and I gladly let him.
“I’ve missed you Lemva, you have no idea just how much I’ve missed you. I’m so sorry I left so quickly, I’m so sorry.” “I’ve missed you too James, and you don’t need to apologize, I understand. Why don’t we go drink some water and get some sleep, okay?” The man on my shoulder croaked out a hoarse “Okay” before slowly pulling himself off of me. We both got up and walked into the kitchen to grab some water. James chugged down several glasses before he was satisfied. We made our way to our separate bedrooms before saying goodnight to each other and closing our doors. I pulled the warm blankets over myself and laid my head down, exhausted from the short but intense emotional interaction. As thoughts floated through my mind, I drifted off into a deep sleep.

I awoke to a familiar sensation, it felt as if I was standing in a shallow pool of oil. My eyes were met with black for as far as the eye could see, a seemingly endless floor of tar, and a distant orb of light. This sight had become less eerie and more frustrating the more times I had seen it. [Not this again…] I had been having this dream nearly every night for the past 3 weeks, ever since I had received the invitation from the UN. It was always the same. Endless void, endless black oil, a light always seeming within reach but always too far to catch. I decided to play along with the dream and walk towards the light, the faster I go through with this charade the faster I can wake up and talk to James again. My footsteps echoed into infinity as I waded through the sticky oil, the sensation was awful. I stopped and thought for a moment. [Know what? Fuck it, might as well do something different this time.] I turned around and walked away from the orb of light that had been taunting me for 3 weeks straight. As I walked, I could feel the texture beneath my paws slowly change. I looked down to notice that the tar floor I had grown accustomed to was now an endless field of silver sand. My paws were still sticky from the tar and were now covered with sand, great. As I stared down at the ground beneath me, it slowly started glowing brighter and brighter until it hurt my eyes. It was reflecting something.
I looked up to try to find the source of the light and stared in shock at the sight before me, despite the pain in my eyes. I could not turn away. [By the creator…]
Filling the darkness above me was a white dwarf, its brilliance seeming to burn away the darkness surrounding it. Burning streams of plasma buffeted sand in the distance, leaving only glass. I could feel it watching me, judging me. The air around me swirled and roared, picking up fragments of glass and flinging it against my face as I stood in awe. Clouds of silver shards swirled forever around me, scraping away my wool and flesh but I did not move. I could not turn away. The star seemed to fall toward me. I could not turn away. Instantly, the fury of the wind around me calmed, dropping mountains of the glittering sand onto the ground. The sands whispered to me, filling my mind with a single message.
“Find us. We await.”

I stood alongside James near the airlock, we were finally here. It had been two days since I and James had boarded the ship, and we were finally on an approach to Aafa’s spaceport. I felt excited theorizing what job the UN had for us, but couldn’t help but notice a feeling of dread in the back of my mind. Aafa was the capital of the Federation before the UN Coalition began their occupation, and as a result there would probably be more xenophobia on the streets. Hopefully we wouldn’t have to stick around long enough to see it.
“Attention passengers, we are now breaking through the atmosphere, brace yourself on a nearby hand-rail or other stationary object until further notice.”
Me and James grasped the hand-rails tightly as the ship jostled through the turbulent atmosphere, the surface outside the airlock view-port slowly grew larger and larger as we descended. A beautiful city came into view as the clouds’ obfuscation subsided. I had been to Aafa twice in my life before and every time I saw its grand cities I felt a sense of wonder. I could feel the ship level out and slow down, we were almost docked. I felt a small jolt as the landing gear gently touched down on the landing pad.
Harold’s voice came through the PA system. “Alright you two, we’ve landed. I’ll be with you shortly to show you to your escort group.” James and I looked at eachother, I could see a glint of worry in his eyes. Though whether he was worried about the reactions of Aafa’s inhabitants or worried about his first impressions with such important UN personnel, I could not tell.
I heard the cabin door open far behind us and heard Harold’s footsteps make their way toward the airlock where we stood in wait. He stepped past us and took a position at the airlock door.“Welcome to Aafa.” Harold pressed a button and the blast-door slid open with a pneumatic hiss. “Follow me.” We walked down the ramp and onto the hangar bay floor. As my eyes wandered around the large room I noticed how much better kept this spaceport, or at least this hangar, was than the port on Venlil Prime or Earth. Harold took us through a door and into the main hall for this level.
As we made our way to the nearest elevator a kolshian man walked toward us, his gait taking on a menacing feel as he drew closer. When he saw me he smirked. “You sure you wanna keep walking with these predators, little lady? You’d be a lot safer with me instead of
them.” I was astounded by how blatant this man was with his opinions. I tried to respond calmly to the man but couldn’t hide my offense. “No thank you, I’m perfectly fine walking with these “predators”
thank you. Speak your xenophobia to someone who cares to listen.” The kolshian’s smirk disappeared as he walked toward me faster. Harold’s arm shot out in front of me, blocking the man from getting any closer, the chipper smile he usually displayed was gone from his face. “Please leave sir, we have things to attend to.” The kolshian’s angry expression intensified. “I’m not taking orders from any damn
predator.” I could see the man pulling out an object from behind his back. Before I could react, I heard a sickening crunch as Harold’s fist connected with the kolshian’s face, and the man tumbled to the ground. I heard a sound as the knife we were about to be stabbed with clattered to the ground, the tentacle he had been using to wield it clutching his bleeding face. Harold in a swift motion kicked away the knife and put the kolshian in a choke hold while a group of UN security officers rushed over. Two officers cuffed the bleeding kolshian and another walked up to Harold most likely to ask for an explanation.
Harold put back on his usual cheerful expression as he turned to speak to us.“You two head down to the first floor, your escort group and the other 2 invitees will be waiting in the main lobby, they should be pretty obvious to spot. I’ll catch up soon but I have to explain the situation with security.” I turned to look at James as we hurried to the elevator. I could tell he was angry, but he had a glint of satisfaction in his eyes, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel a little similar. James scrolled down the list of floors on the screen and selected the number 1. The Aafa spaceport was easily the largest structure I had ever seen, I guess there wasn’t enough room for 400 buttons. As the elevator descended, James spoke.
“Hey Lem, you ok?” “Yeah, my heart’s beating pretty fast though. Who knows what would have happened if Harold wasn’t with us.” “Yeah, did you see how fast he handled that? Guy must be a veteran or something.” The idea brought a question to the surface of my mind that I had been pondering since I first received my invitation. “Yeah… I’ve been wondering why we’ve been treated so well ever since we got aboard the ship. I mean, we’re just a couple historians, why spend so much on the ship and all the protection? What could this job possibly be?” As I spoke, James stared past the transparent wall of the elevator and into the city skyline, he seemed to be deep in thought. “Yeah I’ve been thinking about that too… I don’t think we’ll have to theorize for much longer though, just a short drive and we can ask whoever invited us.”
My attention was brought back to reality as a
DING sounded from the doorway, indicating that we were at the ground floor. The doors slid open silently and revealed a veritable swarm of people walking through the main hallway loop, several people of different species squeezed into the elevator we were just in as we walked out. James and I followed the signage on the walls for several minutes and entered into the main lobby, where we could see a group of humans with a Gojid in the middle. The humans wore black suits and sunglasses, I could also barely make out earpieces and microphones hidden among their clothing. They reminded me of the secret agents in the human spy movies I enjoyed watching. They must be our escort group.
We approached the menacing humans and they turned to look at us. Before I could speak up I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see Harold catching up with us. “Sorry for leaving you alone for a bit. I’ll talk with your escorts.” Harold walked up to the closest escort and flashed a badge at them, turning around once the mysterious man nodded. The escort spoke something into his earpiece but I couldn’t quite make it out. “Well, I’d best be going to sort out matters with the captain. I’ll meet up with you later.” Harold handed us off to the mysterious entourage and walked back into the crowd.
One of the bodyguards spoke up. “Follow me and don’t stray off course, we’ll be taking you to the senate building.” As our guards escorted us to our vehicle, I spoke to the gojid accompanying us. “Hi, my name is Lemva, this is James. Are you one of the other people invited by the UN?” The gojid spoke up in a soft voice. “Yeah, though for what reason I do not know why. My name is Cayek by the way, nice to meet you. Do you mind if we get some introductions out of the way before we arrive at the senate building?” James responded first and stretched out his arm for a handshake. It took a second for Cayek to reciprocate. “Sure! As Lemva told you, my name is James. I was born on Earth and currently live on Venlil Prime. I’m a historian and got my doctorate at MIK, where I met Lemva. We’ve known each other quite a while. I like coffee and hate the ocean.” “Oh cool, I attended there too! Got my doctorate in linguistics. When did you attend?” “Sent in an application in 2140, as soon as it opened. Got accepted around a month later.” “Nice, that was around when I joined too. We must not have crossed paths often. Though your face does seem vaguely familiar.” Cayek looked at me and I began speaking. “My name’s Lemva, though I already said that. I attended MIK with James. Went there to get a doctorate in archeology. Was born on Venlil Prime and I’ve moved too many times to count, but my latest home is on Earth.”
I noticed that we had reached our ride. Our vehicle was a black limousine, it looked slightly larger than others I had seen, perhaps it was armored? One of the guards escorting us, who I could only assume was the one in charge, opened the side door and we all crawled inside. Cayek, James, and I settled in our seats and the guard closed our doors before entering through a door closer to the front to sit facing us. The guard sat unnaturally still, staring directly at us as the vehicle drew out of the underground parking area, making me feel uneasy. I looked over at James and Cayek, they seemed just as uncomfortable as I. The ride to the Senate building was silent.
I watched the buildings glide past us as we drove down Main, toward the Capitol. The large dome shaped building grew larger as we crept closer. Nervousness invaded my mind as I wondered what the task we had been chosen for was. Why did the UN spend so much to get us here? What’s with all the security? Why us? We had reached our destination. The limousine passed through several security gates and slowed to a halt at the entrance of the grand building. The guard that had been staring at us spoke, “We’ve arrived, please exit the vehicle and follow me. As you enter the building you’ll undergo several security checks to make sure you don’t have any weapons or banned items. Don’t worry, this is all standard procedure.” Two guards who had been waiting to the side of the entrance walked over to the car and opened the side doors, allowing us to crawl out. Though it had only been a 5 minute car ride, it felt like I had been stuck in that cramped vehicle for hours.
We walked toward the entrance of the titanic building, a large podium with a hologram of the Coalition logo orbiting an artistic depiction of our sector of the galaxy stood just before the doors. The first time I had gone to Aafa as a child, the podium had supported a large statue of Chief Nikonus, the president of the Federation at the time of the war. Good riddance. Our group stepped past the threshold of the senate building and submitted for the security checks that our escort had told us about. As soon as we were cleared, we were led to one of several large doors, it looked like an oversized elevator. Inside was a holographic display of the building showing us our current position, along with a small keypad to the side. I braced myself for the elevator to start ascending as our escort input some numbers into the pad but nearly fell over when it unexpectedly started moving sideways. James chuckled amusedly and I looked at him with a mock pouty face, my tail flicking in slight annoyance. Our escort tried to wipe a tiny smirk off his face as he helped me back to my feet. “We had these installed after a couple instances of people passing out trying to navigate around. Most Coalition species don’t have the amount of endurance humans do and this building is quite large.”
Several moments later the tram came to a halt and the doors slid open. The escort chaperoned us down a short hallway with a decently sized wooden door at the end. I braced myself for whoever would be behind it. Impressions were of utmost importance when meeting government officials. However, I was not prepared for who I would see as the door swung open.
Is that an Arxur?

2023.06.05 10:46 Gummikoalabears Just got home from our first Virgin Voyage on the Scarlet Lady.
We did the May 31 - June 4 Key West, Bimini cruise. I'll give some pros and cons but overall loved the cruise and put money down for our next cruise, hopefully one of the Mediterranean ones.
Loved: 1. Food. Test kitchen was tons of fun and one of the best dishes we had the entire cruise was the mushroom course. So good!
Extra virgin was just great. Our server pretty much just told us that he would bring out one of each of the appetizers. He also brought out extra pasta. Everything here was great.
Pink Agave. This was our consensus favorite meal of the entire cruise. Our server gave us all of the small and medium plates. We each ordered a different large plate and requested more of the small plates. We also had all of the desserts. We were here for well over two hours and enjoyed every minute. Relax, you're on a cruise. Enjoy your food!
The Wake - we ate here once for brunch and once for dinner. Some of us are the soup for both meals. Everything here was excellent. It wasn't the best steak house in the world, but it was very good.
The Dock House - we snacked here multiple times. The shrimp and the hangar steak are great! This was pretty much lunch everyday.
Pizza place - fantastic pizza.
The galley - the taco place and the Ramen place were the best parts of the galley. We didn't try the Burger place at all. Breakfast tended to be disappointing so we started eating at the other restaurants for breakfast. They were great!
- The boat - so many great spaces to just hang out. We played board games, read, did trivia, colored, drank, ate. We just loved this boat. Spent tons of time on deck 7 aft.
- Bimini Beach - both the pool and ocean are great places to be.
- Scarlet night - so fun. Just go with the flow
Needs improvement:
- Bars - we had a bar tab and didn't spend almost $70 because it was almost impossible to get a drink. And the bars were not that crowded. More bars need to be open. Sometimes all the inside bars were open and all of the outside bars were closed or vice versa. Considering everything else is included and this is the main place virgin is going to make money during the cruise, I'm surprised virgin doesn't make it a bigger priority to sell alcohol.
Pool area- pool deck is made of lava. It gets way too hot. Wellness pool is actually a giant hot tub. Not what one wants when we're at sea and it's 95 out. It made the other pool feel even smaller. And the other pool is too small.
Service- really great at some places ( extra virgin, pink Agave, test kitchen,) OK in some places (The Wake) and bad in others (parts of the galley, most bars)
Scheduling - tons to do but many of the things we wanted to do conflicted with dinner. And we love the dinners. We're not skipping dinner for trivia. Move the trivia.
Beach club trams - had the weather been good, this would not have been an issue but there was a big storm with lots of nearby lightening and everyone tried to leave at the same time. Very unorganized. Lots of people running and leaving others who had been ahead of them without seats. It was not the finest moment for some people.
Redemption spa - tons of potential. Just very unorganized. Getting a robe and slides were difficult. I ended up sitting in a line for massages thinking it was the line for the spa. Mud for the mud room is no where near the mudroom. It's a great space and I really enjoyed the spa but it was much more stressful than it needed to be. Also the big tub in the floor should be the hot tub.
Pizza place - again we loved the pizza. But they need to explain to people what kind of pizza they serve and what they should expect. It's wood fire pizza. It's cooked at very high temperature. The crust will have some blackness on it. It tastes great! Don't return your pizza or ask for another one. Saw so many rude who made the wait ridiculously long for everyone else.
Water stations- Loved the water stations except they need more. They are very hard to find and the majority of them seem to be outside. Some drink stations on deck 7 would make a lot of sense.
Again we loved this cruise. We booked another one while on board. The things that need improvement were minor compared to the things we loved. We traveled with friends and that made a huge difference. Had it just been two of us, I think the activity scheduling would have been a bigger deal. We were just there to chill and we had a blast.

2023.06.05 09:27 mpopbelpop Types of cars to book for road trip (LA - SF)?
hi all! My partner and I will be heading to US in Dec, and looking forward to a road trip from LA to SF!
Sorry this is a long one. Here’s some background:
- We have little experience driving in US, but we’ve had experience driving in Winter on slippery roads with low visibility.
- We will try to drive in the day as much as possible, noting that the sunsets around 5pm in winter
- We have a ‘Avis President's Club’ (automatically enrolled due to their partnership with another airline). We’ve had good experience with Avis in other countries.
Here’s our itinerary for reference:
Day 1 to 5: pick up car in Los Angeles Airport (Avis) upon arrival. Explore LA.
Day 5 to 9: Explore Joseph tree > Grand Canyon.
Day 9: Drive to Las Vegas (rest stop). Return rental car at Las Vegas
Day 10: Fly from Las Vegas to Santa Barbara airport. Pick up the rental car near Santa Barbara airport (Avis)
Day 11 - 13: Drive up to Big Sur (if roads are open) and Monterey.
Day 13: Drive to Yosemite
Day 16: Drive to San Francisco. Return rental car near hotel. Note: this is to save the valet parking fees which is $70/night, and we think we might not need the car the following day
Day 17: explore SF by public transport, ferry, foot. Half day at the Alcatraz.
<3rd part of trip>
Day 18: pick up rental car. Flexible plans (Muir Woods, Golden Bridge and/or Napa).
Note: we can’t return the car on Day 19 as it’s a major public holiday and most rental shops in the city are closed
Day 20: return rental car at San Fran airport
Our questions:
- Do you think that Avis would be the best option? We’ve taken into account its wide network and our membership.
- Considering the costs and weather constraints, what cars should we book for each part of the trip?
- Part 1 (LA, Joshua Tree Park, Grand Canyon): normal car or intermediate SUV?
- Part 2 (up the coast, Yosemite): Intermediate SUV. We know there’s no guarantee to reserve a 4WD/AWD, but do you have any tips on how to secure one in advance? We are worried that options at Santa Barbara’s airport might be rather limited and we might have a 2WD in Yosemite.
- Part 3 (SF): cheap economical car, to avoid car-theft in SF.
Thank you!

2023.06.05 09:15 JoshP99 Are You Smarter than a Random Picker? Race 06 Results + Race 07 Predictions
| Results Backtracking Due to hitting the character limit on the R05 post, I was unable to include u/Micek_52’s recap PDFs for the 1st half of the tournament. Instead, they will be linked here. The files for this race, as well as the 2 upcoming rounds, will be released at the 3rd checkpoint (silver medal threshold). Speaking of… Overview Race 06 Pick Distribution Race 06 Pick Distribution The track changed, and some racers changed. Whatever happens, the story is the same. The Hazers (HAZ) don’t seem to care that they’re returning to a track won by a marble that’s currently on the bench; they are here to prove they’re not dead in the water. There were comments about how the GP became more boring than its S3 counterpart. And I guess when it’s predictable enough for a 1-2 Nailed it! combo, I can see where the complaints are coming from. However, Sleet Street wasn’t gracious for those ranked 3rd-5th in the popularity contest. Those 3 teams combined for a total of 6 pts this weekend. Team Plasma (TPL) has it worst of all; they’ve landed a 2nd consecutive Overrated rating after looking like they forgot how many races the season had. With that being said, however, the bottom of the board is even more interesting. Polesitter Billy (BLY) was 5th from the bottom in popularity, and finished in the polar opposite: 5th. Bottom-of-the-barrel Club managed to secure the most attention he’ll ever get in 1 of my recaps, doing so by finishing 6th and barely missing out on another Underrated rating. Of course, the computer decided to finally return to form, notching his best score yet (96 pts). Although his tripler underperformed, he made up for it with all 3 podium finishers. If you didn’t have Cloudy (CLD) on your form, you were doomed. Well, except PKShyBoyO7, who survived with a 3x Crazy Cat’s Eyes (CCE) pick. But he only made it out of the woods by a single point, so my point still stands. Today’s Top 10% With such an obvious tripler (3x) on the table, the quest for blue marks this week came down to smart backup choices. Though I should start by giving a shoutout to Alexis_HK, who was the only player to won a blue mark this round without the perfect tripler. Sure, it was a tie for the last one, but that blue mark puts them back where they were before receiving a strike: near the top (4th). Sorry about the misgendering! I’ll use they/them for you going forward. A quick PSA: should I ever misgender you in a post, please tell me in the Confessional Box so I don’t make the same mistake again. Now on to those with blue marks that followed the masses, but also made sure to take the extra steps: - Ballistic becomes the 2nd player this season to remove a strike after a failure to submit. He has removed both his strikes within 2 rounds of receiving them.
- Speaking of blue marks for players who missed a round, beefywagyu3208 is the 3rd! He, however, has endured a pretty disastrous 1st half, with no triple digit rounds. You definitely needed this one, mate.
- Another player who definitely needed a blue mark was Offbeatobject. He received the 2nd most brutal strike of the season (you’ll find out who holds #1 down below) by opening the tournament with a tie, and then lost in R04 (the computer’s lowest) by just 2 pts. Well done! Though it seems like 2 strikes in the Mindgame happens to you every single time…
- Seesaw swings into 8th place by removing his opening-round strike. His scores went up for 3 rounds, then dropped in R04, before repeating the process yet again. As for another player who has reached 0 strikes after a loss at the Razzway…
- ArtiJo does the same thing this round. This puts them right above the next blue mark winner in Mario. The one-line pony whose confessional boxes always consist of “ALL HAIL KING WISPY” has fittingly secured a blue mark where his king managed to secure his team’s only medal last season.
- Oh man, I’ve been waiting for this one. In every single confessional box, this player added a counter of how many AYSTARP rounds they had played. Throughout all of them, they hadn’t secured a single blue mark. Across gimmicked circuits, perils of the Pond, and sand courses, they never reached the top 10%… until now. Huge congratulations to Human86, who has secured their first ever strike removal! It took 29 rounds.
Of course, we can’t forget about the holder of the purple mark: SeahawkzSK, with 141 pts (3x CLD, 2x RDI, 1x CLM, 1x MIM, 1x THD)! Despite mediocre showings from 2 of his regulars, he made his play in the bigger picks, placing the entire podium in the optimal positions (1st in 3x, 2nd in 2x, 3rd in 1x). Well fought! Statistics Computer's Score: 96 pts (3x GLM, 2x RDI, 1x CLD, 1x THD, 1x WIN) Survival Rate: 44.68% (42 of 94) Average Player Score: 89.39 pts Range of Scores: 117 pts (24 min, 141 max) Most Frequent Player Score: 122 pts (scored 5 times: SnowLucario, Micek_52, Pit-O-Matic, Tomasticar, & tbaochaos) Graph of Scores Looking Ahead 24 players have secured a silver. 43 players have to deal with with a few bumps in the road. 17 players are on thin ice. 14 players were sent to hell while it’s freezing over: - Sharkeatingleeks
- Mathmegaminx
- Either_Sir8406
- rrrftl
- Raptor
- Dry-Cost 4314
- Harper
- Loggo
- Irixib
- RTA-Gaming
- tanmi4947j
- Shep
- TCOrphan
- Limer Lad
As for that “most brutal loss” in the tournament, that goes to rrrftl, who lost by a single point to claim a 3rd strike. Nothing I say will eclipse the pain you are experiencing. The road ahead, unfortunately, does not get any easier after this. We’re returning to a track that’s been given too many chances: Misty Mountain. Here comes Race 07. And no, there isn’t a riddle this time. I’m pretty sure revisiting this track is enough anxiety for most of you. https://preview.redd.it/00yshml6f54b1.png?width=1540&format=png&auto=webp&s=e887ee2676cbb992e39fc905e2eaf10a8ad2b5ae Last week, the computer made a statement, proving that the Thunderbolts (TBL) weren’t an automatic death blow to his danger level. That being said, I don’t think I like his chances this week… 3x Raspberry Racers (RSP), sending out ??? (???) 2x Black Jacks (BJK), sending out ??? (???) 1x Crazy Cat’s Eyes (CCE), sending out ??? (???) 1x Thunderbolts (TBL), sending out ??? (???) 1x Team Primary (TPR), sending out ??? (???) It seems like the computer has tripled down on his shenanigans/statement picks. He’s got the current last place team, a team that was formerly last place, and a team that just took a turn at the bottom of the picking board. And if Blue Eye (BLI) is racing this weekend, it might be 4 bold selections. I don’t want to be overconfident, but I like the odds this week. Even if it’s at a track whose designer needed to be fired after S3. To submit predictions, CLICK HERE. Remember, you cannot use a team as your tripler if you've already used them there. It doesn't matter which marble was tripled; if you use 1, they're both off the table for the top spot. Using a team as a doubler or regular has no limitation. For full results, please check the scoreboard, which can be accessed by CLICKING HERE. submitted by JoshP99 to JellesMarbleRuns [link] [comments] |
2023.06.05 08:37 BooBooBougie On the road to becoming a teacher?
This fall, I am going back to school to become a teacher, preferably an art teacher, and preferably middle school (I know you can’t pick grades). My bf thinks that I should call the schools in town, and see if they have openings so that I can get my foot in the door…but they have nothing that I qualify for, I have no degree and no experience, which seems to be required nearly everywhere in AZ. So, my question is, would I really need this pre-degree experience anyway? Would it really boost my résumé as much as he thinks it will? I just feel like it will be a waste of time since I have nothing that they’re looking for, at the schools OR places like the boys and girls club. The only way I could get in to at least get experience would be volunteering for a sort of youth group that I once attended. What do you all think?

2023.06.05 08:13 Superb_Cat_9896 I (22F) have made no friends in the past year after moving across the country for college
Basically I don’t have any friends who live anywhere near me while I am attending college on the east coast. FaceTime has helpful, but past year I had some classes/work be remote and ended up literally made no friends. I would sometimes go days without speaking to anyone. I have 2 more semesters to graduate, I also know I won’t be able to get a good job once I graduate. I’m dreading going back even though I actually enjoy the actual learning for the most part.
I know the obvious answer is to just join a club lol but I still just found it hard to meet people. In general I can be ok on my own but being alone this much feels a bit much even for me.

On the shipyards orbiting the forge world Exznuvva:
Laborer 12 32 1453 offered gratitude to the Priestesses, for their sight had spared the lowly such as he. If not for the beetles, his aging bones would have made his worth to the forges fall, and his worth to the alter rise. Give praise to the sight of the Priestesses, for they saw the unworthy who hoard their blood from Axzuur when worthy Axxaakk did yet draw breath. Yet, he was pleased to make worth of himself at the shipyards. Why shouldn't he? The glorious vessel would fly forth into the starfields of the unworthy to cull them from the lands which rightfully belonged to the Emperor and Empress, and their subordinates, thus sparing those of little worth who would be required to sate the thirst of Axzuur, may the stars tremble at his step, in their stead. How he hated the cowards for hiding so long from their fate, for if they had been discovered earlier, perhaps his father would yet live.
Once he had sufficiently abased himself to the local shine to the Empress, may she see where the unworthy hide, he made his way to his assigned dwelling place. Indeed, today was a very good day, as extraction ships had returned with all which is needful to his trade in even greater numbers than from the onset of the conquest, thus increasing his worth. If he could gain just a little more worth to the shipyard, he may be assigned apprentices to guide that he might make those young of little worth escape the alter. This is why he was pleased as he entered his assigned dwelling place granted him by the generosity of Initiate-Highborn Narrex-Sarvon, may his might ever increase, and was pleased to find his assigned breeding partner also present.
"Partner," she said coolly, "you look pleased."
"The war goes well, and my worth rises despite these bones," he said.
Laborer 22 15 1427 scratched the metal wall with her knuckle horns and asked, "Think you to rise to warrior?"
"Nothing so grand, partner," he laughed. "I hope to be worthy to give instruction to those of little worth as I was or may be."
"This ambition is well, for you can attain it," she said as she swayed toward him, "I too have an ambition. I desire to give birth to a warrior."
"You aim too low, partner, for you could be worthy of a name," Laborer 12 32 1453 said with a gentle smile.
"Jest not!" she snapped in reply.
"I do not," he said earnestly, "for I believe that you could raise better than the raising centers, to become a true mother."
"This you likely say beguiled by my meager beauty. I care not, leave aside your flattery and instead give to me the seed of a warrior."
Laborer 12 32 1453 lay abed in the glow of the completion of his latest task. To sire a warrior might indeed raise his worth, he could only hope that the war last long enough for the proving. He hoped indeed that if his assigned breeding partner did become pregnant from their labors together, she would have occasion to demonstrate her skill with babes, and be allowed to raise it herself, and perhaps even be selected to tend the highborn babes.
On Numiind:
Jax hid in the shadows of an alley and watched the combined arms patrol trundle down the street. It had been thirteen days. Thirteen days and seven refugees laid beneath the waves. But still, they found survivors. Still, they liberated prisoners. Still, they held out. The Republic was coming, so Jax lead his cell. The Republic was coming, so Jax watched the Axxaakk tank and squad trundle down the road. They'd done a little testing, and the hover tanks, well, they didn't like being hit from below. Unsurprisingly, to be sure, but that's why they patrolled with infantry elements now. However, this was their home, not the Axxaakk's. Little did they know that there was a massive cave a mere ten feet below grade. They had learned that there were tunnels, and that the resistance was using them to get around, the consequence of another cell getting wiped out in another mining town, but Jax wasn't just some cop trying to defend his home. He was a trained RNI Drop Trooper, and so he knew how to run opsec. The tank shuddered over the proper location, and he clicked his radio twice. There were seven muted explosions, the Axxaakk infantry stopped and took aim, anticipating the coming attack.
However, they should have looked to their feet where large cracks were spreading in the plascrete in a wide oval with its longer sides kissing the buildings, until the force of the tank's grav drive finally caused the underlying stone to buckle, and the entire formation plummeted forty feet to the hard rock below.
He, Rae, Kie, and Ash popped out of their concealment and laid down supressing fire from their newly elevated positions, and quickly took out the remaining infantry, and also convinced the tankers to stay nice and buttoned up in their tank too damaged to hover anymore. Which was exactly what they needed them to do while Mei blew a nearby levy, allowing the sea to intrude upon that part of the town, and the street, and the hole in it. They waited for the water to settle, and waited some half hour more in silence and stillness. Then, Jax ordered over the radio, "Ash, go take a look."
"You got it boss," the man answered, and try as he might, Jax could not identify the shadow darting through the water which was Ash. He suspected that ash had taken an indirect route, and if he had Jax would approve. The enemy might have rudely refused to die for them. Then, Ash's whiskered face popped out of the water near the center of the new submarine sinkhole. "Looks like they drowned," he said softly into his radio.
"Good," Mei spat over the radio.
"Good work people, now let's get a move on to the next objective," Jax said.
They slipped into the waters of the newly flooded tunnels, and followed Kai to an abandoned mine shaft, where they made their exit some two hours later.
"Alright," Jax said softly, "we'll rest here for a bit."
Rae pat him on the shoulder and said, "You should sleep a little."
"I'm fine."
"Just fifteen minutes, Jax. I can keep watch."
Jax shrugged her touch off and said, "Kia and Ash, take a nap. The rest of you keep watch and eat something. We'll trade off."
"Got it," came the reply.
"Fifteen minutes, wake me up on the dot," Jax murmured to Rae.
She nodded.
One rest and recuperation later, and Ash was sent out to scout the facility. They'd gotten intel on the presence of pups being held hostage in the old school building, which has miraculously escaped bombardment. The public displays that the invaders made of plunging their wicked knives into the bellies of the elderly did not bode well for the captured pups, so Jax and his companions didn't even debate whether they would get the pups away from the invaders, but how and when. The answers to both questions would depend greatly on what Ash came back with.
"Jax," came his voice out of the shadows, "We have some company."
"What do you mean?" Jax asked as his trigger finger started feeling somewhat itchy.
Then, a sound came from the darkness that nearly made him weep, Republican Battle Cant, "Your buddy says you're a vet from the anti-piracy patrols."
"Hell yeah," he choked in return as the looming figure of an Advanced Stealth Drop Surveillance Scout stepped out of the shadows, even as his scout pattern armor shifted its coloration to blend into his surroundings.
"You came!" Rae exclaimed as tears filled her eyed.
"Of course we came. Where did you think the supply drops were coming from. We've determined this town is an ideal drop sight, as this is a main command hub for the enemy ground forces, so I've been preparing things."
"You took out the sacrificer…" Ash said with awe.
"How do you know that?"
Jax realized that the RNI ASDSS wasn't speaking RBC, or even Commercial English, but their own language, and decided to keep on with that, "Because it wasn't us, and there's nobody else holding out here."
"Just you five?"
"Us and the guards securing the refugees down below," Jax said.
"Alright, well that doesn't change anything. What's your coms?"
"Radio. The walkies for ops and HAM between cells."
"You still have HAM radios?"
"A hobby club started by a Human who moved here back just after first contact. It got popular to hear his stories."
"Huh," the RNI ASDSS grunted in a satisfactorily impressed way before he continued, "Okay, I think I'm patched into your frequency. Test test."
Jax nodded when all of the radios also said "Test test."
"Sir-"
"I'm no sir, I'm still a corporal."
"What do we call you, then?"
"Well, you can call me Lost Boy for now. Opsec."
Jax smacked himself on the forehead and said, "Ancestors forgive me."
"Huh?"
"We've been using our real names."
"Well, not to be mean, but you guys don't exactly have a very wide pool of names. They probably think they're code names anyway."
"Okay Lost, we're here on a rescue op. They have pups in there to do Ancestors know what with, and we're not waiting around to watch them get stabbed to death on top of some weird rock."
"Gotcha, I'll find me a good firing position and switch the APR over to quiet mode and provide overwatch."
"Aye, Lost. Signal when you're in position. Three clicks on the radio. Everyone, move out."
"One more thing," the Lost Boy said as the group started breaking up, "The drop pods will be hitting about ten klicks west in about three hours, so let's get the kiddos under cover before then, gotcha?"
In low orbit over Numiind:
Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn and Acolyte-Lord Gukea-Sarvon stood before the display screen and made their report to Priest-Lord Tiglach-Pilexer. They did not dissemble, exaggerate, or otherwise attempt to save face before their commander, as they knew how dire the position of the invasion fleet had become after the destruction of a single diplomatic vessel. They knew well that they may have to crouch before this new foe for the time being, for the High Priestess had seen that their might was great indeed, yet the Dominion of Axxaakk was also mighty. Morover, the ever thirsting Axzuur, may the stars tremble at his steps, commanded their conquest, and could therefore not falter.
However, it was up to those who obey that the triumph be as glorious as possible, lest Axzuur become displeased and demand their blood as the unworthy. Thus, while it might have been wise at another time to embellish the facts in their favor, they knew that such would be short sighted in this case.
Acolyte--Lord Narrex-Quinn was saying, "I do not expect we can begin to dominate the mammal-worms across the planet to such a degree that they resume their industry at our direction."
"Indeed," Acolyte-Lord Gukea-Sarvon agreed, "and we have gathered that which was readily available in either the raw or already processed before we took possession of it."
"Thus, unless we can send one to delay the Terrans, for at minimum two annum, we shall need to move on and raid elsewhere."
"Let it be so," the face on the screen decreed. "Carry off with you those adults who's young you have in custody. They shall make excellent serfs on these wet worlds."
"We obey, Priest-Lord," they intoned as they bowed and their superior cut the communication."
"I shall return to my flagship," Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn said, and the Initiate-Highborn present moved immediately to accommodate this.
"I was pleased to work with you, brother. Would that we had time to subjugate this world. I would think you placed at its alter, and thus find yourself raised up to Priest-Lord."
"My fate is to be covered in blood and glory, brother. Such a task and honor must fall to another."
"It troubles me that we could not crush these mammal-worms even after more than ten days," Acolyte-Lord Gueka-Sarvon grumbled.
"If it were not so, we would not have so many new serfs. It is much the same upon the other worlds infested with these lower creatures," so we have gained much for the Dominion, as have other Acolyte-Lords."
One shuttle ride later, and Acolyte Lord was in his quarters, enjoying a local delicacy, some kind of water animal with fins. Its flesh was pleasantly tender and sweet. He hoped that he would be a part of the forces who would return to this place to conquer this place for this treat alone. His pleasing reflection on future glories was Interrupted by an initiate-Highborn.
"Acolyte-Lord, your leadership is needed in the command throne," the Initiate-Highborn murmured with a proper waist deep bow.
"Return to your station, I come."
"I obey," he said and quickly shuffled away.
Acolyte-Lord was in his subordinate's heels all the way to the bridge, where alarms were blaring, "Report at stations," he commanded.
"Four incoming hyperspace exits detected in the interdiction zone!"
"Ship class estimation!"
"Unknown, Acolyte-Lord! Their shadows are somehow obscured."
"Assume the worst, order all frigates and their escorts to the exit sites!"
"They do exit now!"
"On screen!"
"I obey!"
Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn's amputated hand quaked at the sight of the sensor data rendered visually. The ships were massive, bristling with weapons platforms, communications and network arrays, and bay doors. "Battleships," he whispered in horror.
"A hail comes, Acolyte-Lord!"
"Refuse it!"
The main display screen suddenly lit up with a black banner with a yellow star at its center and what looked to Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn like a glassed planet to one side accompanied by the audio, "We remember the
We Sing."
"I said not to accept a hail!"
"Acolyte-Lord, they broke through our system with the hail itself as if they were from a Priest-Master's ship!"
Aboard the Destroyer Tiger Lilly:
The squadron had just exited hyperspace, and the enemy was around the space-otter planet of Numiid in force. There was even a battleship there, or at least what these genocidal scum thought was a battleship. Corporal Linus George sent up a prayer, and clambered into his drop pod. He always hated the space superiority portion of the battle, even against junker pirates, and these freaks had actual weapons. All plasma, but they had reportedly sunk a few Roma Nova ships, which was impressive for plasma only. He was going to show these murderous zealots what happens when you go fucking around and touch a Republican boat. They were in find out time.

I really have no friends to speak the closest would be my coworkers but I can't hold good enough conversation with them but my social anxiety eventually overwhelms me.
I tried dating apps but I never got any matches. I have hobbies but there mainly solo ones. Not a huge fan of clubs and bars and I don't really have much time to have to go out much in the first. On top of that I have zero confidence and embrassed.
Everybody keeps telling me that I shouldn't worry about this and focus on more on my career. But I feel like I'm behind and if it dosen't happen now then it never will.
Sorry about the long rambling post I just needed to vent, I don't know if this was a healthy outlet. Some advice would be great thank you.

2023.06.05 05:49 JLGoodwin1990 We broke into the Egyptian Theatre in Coos Bay to go ghost hunting. I wish we never had.
“I just had an idea pop into my head about something to do this coming weekend, and I wanted to bounce it off you two before it slips my mind” My friend Natasha said those words as the three of us sat on my couch one afternoon. I found myself sitting up slightly. Normally, Natasha was the last of our group to suggest things to do, letting Vinny, the third member of our group, or I come up with the plans to keep our free time occupied. The fact she was about to suggest something intrigued me. “What have you got in mind?” I asked her. A smile played over her face as her brown eyes seemed to flash. “How about a little ghost hunting?”
I felt Vinny sit straight up beside me. She had clearly grabbed both our attention now. The three of us were what you might call amateur ghost hunters, using very basic items we bought offline to visit some of the spookier places in the area and posting our adventures on YouTube, sort of like a crappier version of Ghost Adventures. “Now that’s one hell of a good idea” Vinny said, before a puzzled expression spread over his face. “But, I mean, where? We’ve already done most of the places around town. The Tioga building won’t let us in after that…well, what that one resident claims we stirred up in the old ballroom, and I’m not about to make the hours long drive to the Wolf Creek Inn” Natasha’s smile grew wider. “No, we don’t have to even go out of town for this one” she said, her voice dropping low, “What I’m suggesting, is we check out…” her voice trailed off, letting the suspense grow for a few seconds before finishing, “The Egyptian Theatre”
Instantly, Vinny let out a harsh bark of laughter. “HA! Now that’s a good one. You know damn good and well that the society that runs the theater won’t allow us in after hours to ghost hunt. As far as I know, they’ve never allowed any paranormal teams into the place” He pulled a face. “So, how exactly do you propose we get in there? You flutter your eyelashes for the night janitor and use your feminine charms to get us in?” Natasha still grinned, but rolled her eyes at our friend’s quip. “No, actually, I was thinking about using my lock picking skills to get us in” she declared. It was my turn to give her an incredulous look. “You’re joking, right?” I asked. She shook her head. “Nope, I’m dead serious” I let out an incredulous, almost baffled snort of laughter and pulled my glasses off my face, rubbing my eyes.
The country, and, to a large extent, the entire world, became gripped in an interest, sometimes bordering on obsession with all things Egyptian when King Tut’s tomb was discovered over a century ago. Many things came out of this, including the classic 1932 monster movie The Mummy. But, one thing that also came of this fever gripping the country was a desire to build many Egyptian style buildings. And one of the buildings which took this design and ran with it, were the movie theatres. A decade after the legendary discovery, over a hundred theatres had gone up all around the country, their interiors clad with fake temple columns, paintings of sphinxes and Egyptian gods such as Anubis decorating the walls, and hieroglyphs adorning the archways. People flocked in droves to them, both to watch movies, and live performances. But, like all trends, eventually, the interest began to wane, and as the late 20th Century approached, many began to shut down and be either remodeled, or straight up demolished. Today, there’s only between five and eight Egyptian style theatres left in the entire country.
And one just so happens to be right in the town I live in.
When I moved to Coos Bay, Oregon nine years ago, I immediately fell in love with the place. Even though it’s the largest coastal town on the Oregon coast, it’s a place which is more or less perpetually frozen in time, still looking pretty much as it did between thirty and seventy years ago. And, as someone who is not exactly into the modern world, it made a perfect place for me to live and escape away from the 21st Century. I began exploring right away, driving every street of it and the town neighboring it, North Bend, along with walking every alley and back road I could to learn the layout. That’s how I learned about the supernatural element to the town.
There are many places in town which people claim supernatural occurrences take place. From the remains of the old logging buildings on the estuary, to the old Tioga Hotel which has been remodeled into apartments, there is no shortage of ghostly tales. There was even the old McCauley Hospital, which had once been the focal point of the town’s annual ghost walks until it was demolished in 2018. As a side note, I heard a rumor that a couple people broke into that place right before it got torn down. Something sure spooked them, because a friend of mine on the police force told me they gave him a fright, bursting in the night before Easter and rambling about something. I always wondered what they saw in there.
But, for me, the place in town I always loved the most, and enjoyed the most hearing about the ghostly accounts told, was the Egyptian Theatre.
Originally built as a garage in 1922, it was renovated by a man named Charles Noble into a movie theatre in 1925, where it drew in droves of people from around the area to watch films, and enjoy live vaudeville performances. It continued to operate almost to the end of the 20th Century, when other theatres began to attract younger moviegoers, and for a while, it almost seemed as though the historic building might even be closed for good and gutted. But, thanks to the efforts of local preservation societies, it was saved, and now operates as a theatre once again. They mostly play only older movies, along with live performances.
And, of course, it draws curious people for the paranormal rumors surrounding it.
For years, people have reported strange occurrences happening inside the building, both when it’s open, and after hours. Patrons and employees alike have spoken about a pervasive feeling of being watched inside the building, but finding no one there when the place was searched. There have been reports of being touched by invisible hands, a few even pushed slightly. Beyond physical interaction, employees have reported the sounds of old film projectors playing and unseen audiences laughing after hours, along with the eerie playing of the theatre’s Wurlitzer pipe organ, along with a host of other occurrences. No ghost hunting team has ever gone in to try and document these events. And to Natasha, that was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Legal, or not.
“Are you freaking nuts?!” Vinny exclaimed, “Do you have any idea how much trouble we’d be in if we got caught breaking and entering? The cops around here are already a bit twitchy with the druggies and the homeless. You wanna give them a reason to throw us into jail alongside them?” Natasha held up a finger, flipping her black hair over her shoulder. “They won’t find out, because I have not one, but two aces in the hole here. The first is that thanks to being friends with Scott, I know the nighttime police sweeps, where they’re going to be and everything. There’ll be an hour long window where they’re not anywhere near the alley where the back door to the theatre is. We can get in and out with no threat of being spotted at all. And the second is, did you forget I’m dating Dylan now?” The realization washed over me like a wave; she had started dating the man who helped the preservation society run the theatre a month or so ago. Damn, she’s been planning this one for a while, I thought.
Vinny had a thoughtful look on his face, his green eyes darting around rapidly, but not seeing. “Hmm” he muttered, then looked at Natasha. “And you’re sure that there’s no chance of us getting caught?” he asked slowly. “Absolutely none” she said, then looked at both of us. “So, how about it?” For a few moments, there was silence, and then Vinny let out a chuckle. “What the hell, why not? The most exciting thing we’ve done the last few weeks is go down to the farmer’s market. This could shake things up a bit” I suddenly became aware that the two of them were looking at me, waiting for me to make my decision. I was always the most sensible of the three of us, doing all I could to keep us out of trouble with others as well as the law. But, I always had one nasty Achilles Heel ever since I had been a child, and that was peer pressure. So, despite the overwhelming feeling that I should tell them no, that I should say we should just find something else to do, I nodded. “Alright, let’s do it” I said simply, causing grins to break out on both of my friend’s faces.
I wish to God in retrospect that I’d just had the damn spine to stand up and say “No”
The rest of the week seemed to pass by faster than usual. Before I knew it, the weekend had arrived. We’d decided that late Saturday night would be the best time to do this, as most places downtown closed up between eleven and midnight, aside from the bars and strip club. To say I felt anxious about breaking the law, something I wasn’t used to doing at all, would be like calling a Megalodon a goldfish, but my worries about disappointing my friends ended up outweighing it. And so, at eleven-thirty, the three of us piled into my beat up Chevy Tahoe, and made our way towards downtown. As I drove us down Ocean Boulevard, which connected the two sides of town, something settled over me. I can’t exactly place it, even to this day. But it was the most uneasy feeling I’ve ever experienced. But I did my best to push it away. It’s nothing, Troy. It’s just because you’re, understandably, worried about this. Plus, the road being deserted isn’t helping much.
My mental chiding seemed to help center me a bit, which was a good thing. The road was now angling downward, and a moment later, we drove into downtown. The darkened shapes of the closed stores seemed to rise up higher on either side of us than they looked during the daytime. We’d decided to cruise by the front entrance first, just to see if anyone were still inside. As I turned the truck onto the main drag, the sign for the theatre rose high above us, a depiction of an Egyptian pharaoh next to the yellow and white letters which proclaimed its name to everyone who drove through town. I spared a glance as we passed it. The lit up marquee windows showed that The Blues Brothers and Jaws would be shown soon. For whatever reason, though, I couldn’t bring myself to look through the glass doors that showed the building’s darkened interior. The uneasy feeling had returned, and, for a moment, it felt as though if I did look, I would see someone, or something staring back out at me. And then we passed it, taking the next right and looping back around to Anderson Ave.
I turned the truck into the narrow alley drive which ran along the back of the theatre and neighboring buildings. Parking right next to the rear doors would be extremely conspicuous, so I pulled up a bit further and parked in a carport like area. Shutting off the engine, I turned to my two friends. “Well, this is it” I said, “Last chance to turn back if anyone’s having second thoughts” I’d hoped that either Vinny or Natasha would’ve gotten cold feet in the last few minutes, allowing us to go do something else. But there was no such luck. “Are you kidding me?” Natasha said from the passenger seat, “We are far too close to back out now!” Vinny grunted from behind me. Well, shit. Resigning myself to the fact they were determined to go through with this, I let a deep breath out through my nose and nodded. The others opened their doors and hopped out. A moment later, I followed.
The night air was cool and crisp on my skin as we slowly walked back down the alley to the rear of the yellow-ish, tan building. Three different sets of red double doors were built into the back of the theatre. Natasha pulled something out of her coat pocket, and I realized, with a small pang of surprise, that it was a lock pick set. A legitimate lock pick set. “Where the hell did you get that?” I whispered to her. She shrugged and smiled. “I have my ways of getting things” she said simply, then pointed to the far right set of doors. “We’ll have a bit of cover from that electrical box. You two keep an eye out while I deal with the lock” And with that, she scurried forward, bending down in front of the door handles. Vinny and I stood guard, each of us looking down both ends of the alley. As the soft sound of Natasha messing with the lock filtered over to me, I realized just how quiet it was. And how eerie hearing downtown so quiet was. Aside from a few distant booms and bangs, and the far off sound of a dog barking, all I could hear was the whistle of the wind as it whipped between the old buildings.
An involuntary shiver cascaded up my spine, and I tried again to reason myself back to a relative sense of calm. “Get a grip, dude, you’re gonna be fine” I whispered under my breath. But this time, it felt as though I weren’t able to entirely convince myself. I suddenly became aware of a creeping sensation, one which made me shoot a look around. Nothing moved in the stillness, no indication of anyone besides us being in the alley. And, yet…I was overcome with the distinct feeling of being watched. Not by either of my friends. But…by someone else. Before I had a chance to even think about it, I heard a rather loud click, and Natasha let out a soft laugh of triumph. “We’re in, ladies and gentleman!” she declared, standing up and pulling on the door. It opened silently, the streetlight in the alley casting a small shaft of light into the darkness beyond. Turning, she waved an arm at Vinny and I. “Come on, let’s get inside”
Before either of us could say anything, she turned and disappeared into the dark. I shot a look at Vinny, who simply shrugged. “After you, my man” he whispered. I let out a deep sigh, and then moved to the door. Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out the small flashlight, and then pulled on the heavy metal, slipping inside, Vinny right behind me. The darkness swallowed us as the door closed. For a moment, a small rush of panic from not being able to see flashed through me, before a light appeared beside me. It wasn’t from a flashlight, though; instead, a small, orange flame flickered beside me. “Don’t turn on your flashlights yet, just follow me” Natasha said, the flame making her face seem to dance and move behind it. She turned and headed away, leaving us no choice but to follow. I listened to her and didn’t turn on my flashlight. But every fiber of my being was screaming at me to. Because the feeling of being watched out in the alleyway? Had quintupled in here. The best way to describe it, was that we were angrily being stared at. And I didn’t like the sensation one bit.
Natasha led us up a flight of steps and pushed open another door. “We’re here” she said, still keeping her voice low, “You can turn on your flashlights now” Thank you, God, I silently said, snapping mine on and casting a bright white light into the room we’d entered. A moment later, so did my two friends’ lights. The beams played around, and I heard Vinny let out a bit of a gasp. “Ho-lyyyy shit” he muttered.
Natasha had guided us into the main theatre. The ceiling rose high above our heads, almost out of sight of even the flashlights. Rows upon rows of red movie seats stretched out and away from us, seeming almost unending in the shadows. The walls were all covered in hieroglyphs, all still original from the 1920s. To our left, the second story, which housed a smaller row of seats, along with the projection room rose about twenty feet above us. And to the right, was the stage itself. It was flanked by two huge columns, the screen rolled up and revealing a mosaic of an Egyptian building on the back wall, with two men clutching staffs sitting on either side. Directly in front of the stage sat the organ, its seating bench tucked beneath it.
“Okay, this is a trip to be in at night!” Natasha exclaimed excitedly, then pulled the backpack she’d been wearing off her shoulders. Dropping it into a seat, she unzipped it and began pulling items from it. “Guys, here” she said, holding them out. Vinny stepped forward and grabbed the camcorder from her; as someone who’d had a lifelong dream of being a filmmaker, he was our resident cameraman. I stepped forward and took two items from her: an infrared thermometer and an EVP recorder. The rest, she placed on the ground, and then faced Vinny. “Alright, tell me when you’re recording” He fumbled with the camcorder for a second, then shot her a thumbs up. Instantly, she took on a somber, eerie expression, giving an admittedly creepy look at the camera. “Well, well, welcome back to The Three Ghostkuteers, everyone. I hope you all have been well since our last trip. Tonight, you join us in a very, very special place, and one close to home for us. We are currently in the Egyptian Theatre in Coos Bay, Oregon, one of the last remaining in the country. It was built in the 1920s by a man named Charles Noble-“
I turned away, tuning her out as I did. The woman really, really enjoys being in front of the camera. Better her than me. Shining my light around, I looked up at the balcony. I could see the small hole in the projection booth where the movie projector would shine out onto the screen. Something caught the beam’s light, reflecting off it slightly, and I aimed the light at the wall. It was a wrought iron light fixture, one which had been shaped into the figure of a King Cobra, poised to strike. Gazing around, I saw they adorned much of the walls. I let out a small shudder at it. God, do I hate snakes. Thankfully, though, the feeling of being watched I’d had in the alley and the darkened back of the theatre had seemingly disappeared. Yeah, see, what’d I tell you, Troy? Nothing but your nerves.
Natasha had finished her opening monologue and moved to the edge of the stage, on which she placed the small, square spirit box. “And now, let’s see if anyone would like to speak with us” she said, flicking it on. Instantly, the silence of the theatre was shattered by the sound of static, intermittently interrupted by quick snippets of radio shows being picked up. “Is there anyone here who’d like to talk to us?” she called out into the huge room. The static and snippets were the only sound to answer her. After a minute, she tried again. “Are there any spirits who’d like to communicate with us?” There was still nothing. Vinny panned the camera from the box to Natasha as she paced back and forth for a few minutes. A small look of disappointment flooded over her face, but she instantly plastered it over with the same look she’d given the camera before. “Well, it looks like the spirit box isn’t gonna work tonight, so we’re gonna have to try something else” She pulled out an EVP recorder identical to mine and switched it on. “Let’s try this instead, shall we? Remember, by the way guys, if you’re new here and want to see more, to like and subscribe-“
I turned away again, feeling a small pang of irritation flow through me. This is freakin’ ridiculous, man. The longer we stay in here, the more chance we have of getting caught. Truth be told, as much as I enjoyed ghost hunting, I didn’t even really believe in the paranormal. In all the years the three of us had filmed together, not once had we caught anything, on tape or otherwise. In fact, many times we’d had to fake spooky occurrences in order to make sure our videos got any views at all. This is your own fault, man, I silently chided myself, you’re the one who couldn’t stand up to them and say no. You really, seriously need to grown a spine and learn how to say no. The mental self lecture was furthering my rotten mood, and I began to feel a wave of anger at my two friends, as well as myself boil up.
“Hell with this” I finally muttered, then turned and began walking up the aisle. “Troy, where the hell are you going?” I heard Natasha call out behind me. I stopped, not looking over my shoulder, but quietly aiming my voice behind me and allowing a hint of irritation to seep into it. “I’m gonna go check out the second floor balcony, okay? I don’t exactly like just standing here” For a moment, there was silence, and then her voice came, soft and almost apologetic. “Okay, go ahead” Before she could say anything more, I strode away, walking to the open doorway which led out of the theater and into the concession area. I hooded my flashlight beam with one hand to make sure it wouldn’t accidentally shine out of the glass entrance doors into the street and looked around. The lobby and concession stand took up most of the front area, the darkened shape of it stretching along the far wall.
Taking a few steps ahead, I turned and looked up at the wall above me. Large, blue letters stretched out from one side of it to the other. Through these doors pass the most wonderful people. I snorted softly. “Yeah, unfortunately, not tonight” I shook my head, then looked around. And nearly jumped out of my skin. Something also seemed to jump back. I felt my heartbeat begin to race in my chest and my breath quickened. “Shit…” I let out weakly, then slowly moved forward. After a few steps, I suddenly realized what I’d seen and let out a soft laugh of relief.
“Your own damn reflection, you fucking pussy” Shaking my head, I turned away from the glass wall and headed for the stairs to the second floor. At the base of them, I stopped and shone my flashlight up. “Ooh, boy” I said quietly. Sitting next to the stairway like a sentry, was a huge, golden statue of a pharaoh. It towered over me, and I estimated that, were it be standing straight up, it’d easily be between eight and ten feet tall. It stared straight ahead at the wall ahead of it, and I couldn’t help but let out a small shiver as I stared at it. It just seemed so damn eerie in the dark, and I quickly moved past it, heading up the stairs and stepping out onto the second story balcony.
I shone my light around. Red seats again surrounded me, though this time far fewer. Ahead of me, I could see the balcony’s edge and the hulking shape of the main stage beyond. I could also see the beams of my friends’ flashlights playing over it, and hear both of their voices speaking softly. Deciding while I was up here to at least check out the projection booth, I strode over to the door and tried to turn the handle. It was locked. Feeling my irritation bubble over into exasperation, I jiggled the handle in some stupid attempt to open it. But the door stayed shut. I turned away and rubbed my eyes, again hearing the voices of my friends softly filtering up to me from down below.
“Hey, if there really are any ghosts, or spooks, or specters, or whatever in here? If you’re actually real, could you appear to us, please?” I whispered to no one, “That way my friends can get what they want and I can go home” I received only silence in reply. I hadn’t really expected anything, anyways. You know what? Screw this, I’m going back down there and telling them I’m going home, with or without them. This is beyond stupid, I just broke the law for what? For nothing! For something dumb as hell. And with that, I turned to walk away. But I hadn’t even taken a single step when something crashed into me like a wave. The breath was driven from my lungs as I felt a massive chill shoot through me, as though I’d been doused with ice water. “What the fuck?!” I hissed through gritted teeth, then froze, my eyes going wide. The feeling of being watched had returned with a vengeance, and it had seemingly been ramped up in its intensity. I shot a look around, but saw nobody.
Still, the feeling remained, and with each passing second, it almost seemed to grow stronger. Chill after chill rolled up my spine, and even though I didn’t really believe, something deep inside me told me that it was time to get out. Okay, time to leave, I said in my head, and headed quickly for the stairs. As I reached the head, I turned to look back one final time. That’s when I saw something. It disappeared when I aimed my flashlight at it, but I swear a second earlier it had been the outline of a person, standing in the shadows and watching me. The split second sight catapulted me into motion, and I hurried down the steps, shining my light every which way but loose. Believer or not, I knew something wanted us out. I’d planned on jumping off the second to last stair and running for the main theatre floor. But as I reached the bottom, I froze.
For a moment, I couldn’t place why. And then, the realization fell over me like a tsunami. I let out an involuntary gasp, and fear like I’d never felt before surged through me. I didn’t want to turn around and look. I wanted to pretend I hadn’t seen it. I desperately wanted to. But, like a dumbass character in a horror movie, I couldn’t help it. I needed to look. I slowly turned, aiming my flashlight back up. And I couldn’t help but let out a strangled scream, falling backwards over my own feet as I began to backpedal rapidly.
The statue of the pharaoh still sat where it had. It still towered over me, looking as imposing and eerie as ever. But it’s carved and painted eyes were no longer staring straight ahead at the wall. Instead, they had somehow moved. And when I’d turned, I’d come to find they were staring directly at me.
I scrambled to my feet, snatching the flashlight from the floor where I’d dropped it and aiming it at the statue again. It stared straight out at nothing again. But I knew what I’d seen. It hadn’t been a trick of my mind, or the light. The freaking thing’s eyes had moved to watch me as I passed down by it. I began to stammer out as I backed away from it. “Okay, that’s it, no no no no, we’re done here, fuck this shit, I’m officially a believer, we’re leaving, right now” I kept backing towards the doorway to the theatre, never taking my eyes off the statue. I was terrified I’d seen it suddenly stand up and turn to lumber after me like Boris Karloff or something.
The blaring sound of the theatre’s organ slashed through the silence, causing me to let out another strangled scream and jump almost a foot off the ground. I whipped around, thinking I would see my moronic friends tinkering with the instrument. Instead, I froze again. The theatre was no longer dark. Both of my friends had seemingly vanished from the room, as I could no longer see them. The movie screen had somehow been pulled down, and above me, I heard the whir of the movie projector playing. An old, black and white movie, one which had no sound, played on the screen, occasionally changing to show dialogue being displayed in white letters.
It was also no longer empty.
The entire theatre was packed. I saw people sitting at almost every single seat in the huge room. I could only see the backs of their heads as they watched the movie playing. At the edge of the stage, what looked like a man now sat at the organ, playing it in time with the film. A slapstick moment came across the screen, and the audience began laughing. In any other situation, it would’ve been a comforting sound. But at that moment, it was the most spine chilling sound I’d ever heard. Especially as another wave of realization crashed into me. From the little I could see, everyone in the theatre looked to be dressed in long passed fashions.
That’s when the voice, low and quiet, came from behind me. “Good evening, sir” it said. It sounded like a man’s voice, one rather low and deep pitched, but something about it paralyzed me on the spot. The voice continued, putting on an air of pleasant politeness. “We’re so glad you could make it, it’s been so long since we’ve had new patrons arrive at a showing. If I could just see your ticket, please?”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak. Then, I managed to squeak out two words. “Uh, ticket?” The tone of the voice seemed to change somewhat. “Yes, your ticket. That’s the only way you could’ve gotten in. Please, let me verify it and show you to your seat” Ohhh, shit. Whoever, or whatever the voice belonged to, thought I had shown up like a regular moviegoer. The voice’s tone became less polite. “You do have a ticket, right, sir?” I was beyond terrified to answer, but I was more terrified to remain silent. For a moment, I considered lying. But I feared what might happen if I did. So I told the truth.
“I….uh, I, uh….I don’t have a ticket, sir” I stammered out, my voice barely above a whisper. Instantly, all sound stopped in the room like someone had flipped a switch. “You…don’t have a ticket?” the voice said, all pretense of manners vanishing from it, “Then how did you get in here for the late night showing?” Oh, god. I forced myself to speak, still unable to say anything except the truth. “My…my friends and I….broke in…through the back door…to…ghost hunt…” There was silence for a few moments, and then a heavy hand dropped onto my shoulder. My head swiveled to look at it. Oh, fuck me sideways. It wasn’t a regular hand. It was a fucking claw. One with black skin, tipped with what looked like razor sharp nails. It sat there for a moment, then tightened; almost painfully so, making me let out a small whimper of pain.
That’s when I looked up. Everyone in the theatre had turned to look at me. My initial thought had been correct; they all wore clothing from almost a century ago, and not the stuff cosplayers wear, either. They also had very angry expressions on their faces, as if they’d just noticed the intruder among their midst. The voice finally came again, almost directly behind me. Its tone lowered, almost sounding guttural and animal, making my legs almost melt into jelly from the fear. “Then, might I make a suggestion to you and your trespassing little friends?” My breath came in rapid, ragged gasps, and I barely managed to force out the one word. “Yes?”
“LEAVE”
At the single word reply, which now more closely resembled a growl than a word, I did something I will forever wish I hadn’t. I finally turned and looked up at who was addressing me. The only way I can describe what happened is, my mind shattered. The next thing I remember, I was crashing into the back doors of the theatre into the night.
And I was screaming.
That was a month or so ago. When I’d stumbled back into the alley, I’d turned and, in what I can only call blind fear and panic, bolted for my truck. I hadn’t even heard my friends chasing after me. Not until Vinny caught up to me as I scrambled with my keys, grabbing me from behind and turning me to face him. He said the look I’d had on my face scared him and Natasha more than anything ever had before. I’d been pale as a sheet, my eyes wider than they ever thought a human’s could be. I'd been babbling softly. I’d been saying the words “They want us to leave” over and over. They didn’t ask me what had happened. They just pushed me into the backseat of my truck and drove away from there. It was clear, as I found out later on, that both of them hadn’t seen anything. As far as they were concerned before seeing me dash to the rear doors, it was just an empty theatre. Neither one of them ever asked me what I saw that night. And for that, I’m thankful. Because I could never utter from my lips what I did see.
But I’ve had nightmares since then. Horrible ones. Ones that’ve been so bad, I had to let out what happened to me, deciding to just post it here, regardless of whether people believe me or not.
Nightmares about being back in that theatre after hours. About seeing that pharaoh statue’s eyes flick in its painted sockets to look at me. About seeing all those people, people long since dead, sitting and watching the films they did when they were alive. About seeing that hand fall on my shoulder, hearing that voice, telling me not to come back until I have a ticket.
And about turning to see who the hand and voice belonged to.
The Egyptian Theatre will be celebrating its centennial this year. People are planning to show up in 1920s cars, dressed in period clothing. They’re even going to show an old, silent film as part of the festivities. But I won’t be attending it. I won’t ever go anywhere near it again. The one time I tried, a week or so ago, I started trembling with fear. And the mental image played over and over in my head.
The image of turning to see that horrible canine head attached to the human-like body, red, glowing eyes glaring down at me as it’s sharp teeth glinted in the light.
I pray to god I never will end up with a ticket to one of its late night showings.
But I can't help but fear that, like those packed into the theatre, sooner or later, we all will.

2023.06.05 05:06 JoshAsdvgi The Monster Bird
| The Monster Bird This version of the legend comes from Pliny Earle Goddard's 1917 collection Chipewyan Texts. In the beginning, two young men secured some geese and tied them to their canoe so that they might be drawn through the water by them. The young men lay down in the canoe, saying to the geese, " Take us wherever your land may be." When they stood up, they found the geese full grown. As they were without food, they killed them, built a fire, and cooked and ate them, and when they had finished their meal, continued their journey. After they had gone a long distance, they again found themselves without food. Some wolves came to them and fed them with fat and pemmican. " Do not eat it all," the wolves admonished them, "leave some to eat in the morning after you have slept." The wolves also gave them arrows but cautioned them as to their use and said, " If you should shoot grouse, after a time, and the arrow sticks a short way up in a tree, do not climb up to get it." The young men resumed their journey. After a time, one of them shot grouse and his arrow fell rather high on a tree. Not heeding the warning of the wolves, he said to his companion, " I am going to get it." " No," said the other, "the wolves told us not to do that." Thinking the arrow was not very high, he stood on something and reached toward it. The arrow moved still further out of his reach and the young man involuntarily ascended toward the sky after it. The one who had ascended to the sky traveled alone until he came where a tipi stood. He found an old woman there who blackened his face with a coal. He heard two girls laughing in the brush behind the house. When they came in, they said, " Mother, what sort of a bad animal has come here? " They laughed at him a long time, and then went out again into the brush. The old woman immediately washed his face and combed his hair. Soon he heard the girls talking again, saying, "We will go in again and laugh at that thing which came." As soon as they came in each said, "I would like to have that man. I will marry him." That night, one lay down on either side of him. After a time, when the man woke up, he found he was under the ground and could not move. ln the morning, he heard the family going away. He heard the two girls laughing as they started; but the old woman was crying, and saying to herself, " They have done that way to many nice men who have come to me." Not long after that he heard some wolves coming to the campsite. "What has happened?" one of them said, "There is the smell of a live man." One of the wolves, named EbedahoLtihe, was addressed, " There is a man under the ground. We will take him out. Go and get the partly chewed bone we left behind the old camp." The man heard someone tapping with a spear on the ground as he ran along. Soon he heard the same sounds as the wolf returned. They tried to dig with the rib which he had brought, but it broke. "Get something else," he heard him say. He went again and brought the leg bone of a moose which has the two side bones and dew claws. That did not break and with it they soon dug the man out. Then he found it was the wolves who had done all this. The wolves then gave him two arrows and directions for their use. " This arrow is female," one of them said, "and this one is male. If when you hunt, a cow moose runs away into the brush, you must shoot this female arrow toward the place. But if a bull moose runs into the brush, shoot in that direction with the male arrow. When you have killed a moose, take the intestines and tie them back and forth on a tree. Then you must tell one of the girls that you have left a rope with which she shall carry the moose. If her rope breaks and she begins to curse we will attend to her should we hear her saying, 'mean wolf.'" Then the man went on, following the tracks of the women. When he came close to them, he began to hunt. Seeing where a cow moose had run into the brush, he shot the female arrow. Where a bull moose had run in, he shot the male arrow. He found that each of his arrows had killed a moose. He then went where the people had camped and said to the two girls, " Go and get the moose I have killed." To one of the girls whose name was Weasel-vermin he said, " You need not take a rope with you, for I have left one for you." He told the other girl called Mice-vermin, to take a rope. The girls started for the moose, the man following along with them. When they came near the place where the moose were lying, he said to Weasel-vermin, "You get the one that is over there." He found that each of the girls was accustomed to carry an entire moose on her back at one time. Weasel-vermin found that he meant the intestines when he told her that he left a rope hanging in the tree for her. When she attempted to carry the moose whole with it, the rope began to break. She began to curse and finally said, "mean wolf." Immediately, he heard her running in a circle and shouting. When he came to the place, he found only some human hair lying there, and the marks on the snow where the body had been dragged away. He ran immediately to the other girl and pulled her clothes off. Mice ran under the snow. He found that she was a mouse and the other girl a weasel. After that, she became a person and married the man. The man lived there with his mother-in-law. He remained there for considerable time. He killed many moose but did not know what became of the skins of the moose which he killed. His mother-in-law had dressed just one of them. After a time, she said to him, " Your relatives are lonesome and I do not like that. There is a hole through the sky here ahead of us. Let us go there." When they came to the place, she wrapped the man in the one moose hide she had dressed. He found that she had made rope of the other hides. With the rope she lowered the man. "When you feel yourself touching the ground," she told him, "you must untie the rope and pull it several times." After a time, he thought he felt the ground under him. He crawled out of the hide, pulled the rope repeatedly, and it disappeared toward the sky. When he looked about he was astonished to find that he was not yet on the ground but on the nest of the flying things which feed upon people. Human bones were lying about. A young one of the birds was sitting there. He took a liking to the man and said to him, "I usually eat people but you shall live. Sit here under my wings." The bird was so large that a person could hide under it. Soon it spoke to him again, saying, "After a while, it will be dark as if it were night. It will be my mother coming. When it becomes light again, my father will come." After a short time it grew dark, and the mother bird lit there. She said to the young one, " I smell a human odor coming from you." "Oh, its the human remains lying there which you brought," the young one told its mother. "No, it is not. It is the odor of a living person, which I smell coming from you," the mother replied. When she had found the man, the young one said, " You shall not do anything to him, he will live. If you kill him you must kill me too." After a time it became light again and the father bird arrived. He said the same things to the young one and received the same replies. On account of that the man was allowed to live. When they had both gone off again, the young one said to the man, " I am going to put my wings on you. You shall fly across." The man found that the nest was on an island and that there were rapids on either side in the large stream flowing there. The bird put the wings on the man saying to him, " Fly around here until you are sure you can fly across." The man flew about the nest a little way until he felt certain he could fly across the stream. "Do not put my wings right on the ground, lean them against a tree," the young bird told him. "On your way home, do not travel at night. Even if you think you have not far to go, lie down wherever night overtakes you." Then the man flew across from the nest, took off the wings, and leaned them against a tree. From there he started toward the place where his relatives used to live. He came where a heaver had his house and commenced to dig it out. After a time, it became dark without his knowing it. " The house is not far away. I will not sleep here since it is so close by," he said to himself and started on although it was dark. As he walked along, he carried his spear with which he had been chiseling for the beaver. Suddenly, he felt himself being taken up into the air without visible cause. He found that Hotei, bale, the bird monster, had taken him away. When he had been carried a long distance, above a high rock he was thrown down upon it. Catching the top of the rock with the spear, he jumped over it and saved himself. Again, he was caught and carried away. When he was thrown again upon a sharp rock, he placed the end of his spear against it and jumped over it. He found that this rock was covered on both sides with dried human blood where the people had been killed. He was carried, still alive, to the young bird. When the young one saw him it said, "This is my grandchild, that I love. This is the one I said you must not kill. If you kill it, you must kill me too." For that reason he was not killed. " You shall remain here," the young one said to him, and he lived there with him. When he had been there some little time, he began to think how he might kill them. They slept only in the daytime. He placed a quantity of hay and small brush on the tree under the nest. When there was much of it there, the old one said, "Grandson, why are you doing that?" "Oh, I am playing with it," he replied. After some time he spoke to the old bird, " Grandfather, let me have your firedrill. I want to play with it." He addressed HoteLbale, as Grandfather. He was given the firedrill. Then when they were asleep, during the day, he set the brush and hay on fire and burned the nest with them in it. They lay with their wings all burned. Taking a club he struck the old birds on the crowns of their heads and killed them, but he let the young one live, rubbing the burned portions of its wings away. He said to it, " If you had been the only one, I would not have done it; but your parents have killed many of my relatives." After that, there were no such monsters but the young one was still alive. Someone has recently heard from the west that it has grown again. A man who has knowledge of something magical does not get killed. submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.06.05 05:02 Mimobrok Club Selection FC Bayern München 5 Jun '23: Mimo's Analysis
| Somehow this is actually a strong club selection. In this post, I am analyzing the Club Selection FC Bayern München 5 Jun '23 pack using the Mimo's Rating framework v2. Mimo's Rating is an alternative rating to Overall Rating for a card's ability as a generalist of a position. Here's a link to my compilation of other resources on EFootball Knowledge. Due to the quantity of questions I get I will be unable to answer questions like 'how does this player compare to that'. EFHub has a very good comparison tool that you should check out. Club Selection FC Bayern München 5 Jun '23 https://preview.redd.it/aqpp1q8n344b1.png?width=2608&format=png&auto=webp&s=cecf1843f59b78f6e6d0b587fd301d8007b1964d 1. De Ligt 96 - S Tier The buff is not very big but consistent -- but it's on a card that I would call the undisputed best base CB in the game so the result is an end-game card for CB. His base card changed my team and he's in-form a lot too. The thing is, most people use at least one build-up CB in their CB pairs. There is a lot of strong destroyers such as Nesta, Maldini, Dias, Puyol, Koulibaly, Rudiger, Nesta -- but for the build-up side it's just De Ligt, NC Marquinhos, and NC Gvardiol. If you don't already have another version of De Ligt this is an end-game card. https://preview.redd.it/g9myfw5s344b1.png?width=2424&format=png&auto=webp&s=56faf40c5c3982dc9bbd3e908f95f47f16f31a40 2. Kimmich 95 - S Tier This one is actually pretty close to base, just that his base is already stupidly strong. I think the difference is too small to be felt clearly but overall should be a very slight buff for use at CMF. https://preview.redd.it/ow5cotjy444b1.png?width=2386&format=png&auto=webp&s=3bc0bc6dcac8da0552c26a19f3b0ac3d9f91ff5e 3. Cancelo 95 - A+ Tier Again, a very small buff but it's on a top base card so it's still a decent pull. Very few LBs in the game can cross like Cancelo and none is as complete as him. With how rare LB is this(or any version of featured Cancelo) is a near-end-game LB. https://preview.redd.it/0f71zh6a544b1.png?width=2424&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ea0a6f821c7fab77932664e0e1925c827d051c0 4. Mane 97 - A+ This is a tough call but I'll predict him to be a solid card, but not end-game. On one hand he is a prolific winger which is the preferred playstyle for the wing for many players myself included. However, the buff here is mostly to speed, which I feel like isn't that particularly OP now compared to earlier in the season. My guess is he will be like Sane, Saint Maximin, Coman, Son -- all strong wingers and useable but he won't be end-game. https://preview.redd.it/ee0bkr7o544b1.png?width=2432&format=png&auto=webp&s=864fad25eb724c98d94d603a483abde7614e812c 5. Pavard 93 - A Tier This is a great Defensive Full-back considering how rare the playstyle is and a decent buff from base. However this is also pretty much the Free France Pavard. I think they are too close to argue which is better but I think Free France Pavard has a slight edge. https://preview.redd.it/8m2pghld644b1.png?width=2362&format=png&auto=webp&s=928a41899148f4f6dcf9bb181843a91f7b1effdd 6. Sommer 94 - A- Tier Great stats but short https://preview.redd.it/kdg4e5gm644b1.png?width=2488&format=png&auto=webp&s=d69e7fa8de910c7a4d0f9025a91e7b07820fa3ba 7. Musiala 94 - A- Tier They buff his defense and take away dribbling passing which are his key stats. I think I like the base card more and the POTW one is a lot better https://preview.redd.it/igitwclr644b1.png?width=2406&format=png&auto=webp&s=af1f2c3e07392762aa429ce24a0df329956bd7fc 8. Muller 94 - B Tier Unfortunately much weaker than his other versions like the POTW or NC version. I think a slight buff from base. https://preview.redd.it/nctlvfu2744b1.png?width=2384&format=png&auto=webp&s=bdfa4c84bd6a139ba984bee37de4214ef203b146 Overall Thought This pack continues the trend of Club Selection pack players only getting minor buff like +1, +2. However, the selection of the players in this pack is excellent. Many are cards that are the strongest in their position for base cards like De Ligt, Cancelo, and Kimmich. While only a minor buff from their base they are already strong and unwavering form. I think it's reasonable both to spin and save. This is the end of the season every pack is guaranteed to be good. submitted by Mimobrok to pesmobile [link] [comments] |
2023.06.05 04:49 SamuraiUX Hogwarts Legacy + Persona 5 = Much Better
I'm grateful for the fact that Hogwarts Legacy gives me something I've always wanted: the coziness and good feelings of being in Hogwarts and the surrounding area. It's beautiful.
That being said, it misses the mark on so many OTHER things I've always wanted in a Wizarding World game, and I realized that somehow many of them were solved by/done better in Persona 5, of all things. If Hogwarts Legacy had merged it's storyline/graphics with some of Persona's systems, the game would be mind-blowingly good.
Daytime Management: I hate that you have the quest "Attend Herbology" all day and all night for as many days as you leave it there. It feels fake and unrealistic and takes me out of the immersive experience. One thing Persona did great is that it structured your school day such that you had to attend classes during the morning/afternoon, and it gave you the opportunity to work jobs on certain hours and on certain days. It had a "sims" element to it that I think really would've benefitted Hogwarts: Legacy. Another idea, rather than the structured "you have to be in class" format that Persona offers would be to simply have a day with a live clock: Herbology is at 10am, e.g., and you're welcome to skip it and go adventure instead if you like -- but you miss that class' lesson and might get a talking to when you get back. That way it really has the feeling of attending classes, going to lunch with friends, attending clubs after school, and for God's sake -- sleeping every night in your bed!! It felt obvious to me that we'd wake up most mornings in our bedroom and leave via our common room. Sure, some nights we might be up late, or out in the wild, or somewhere away from the castle entirely, but I felt un-immersed (is that a word?) that we could just stay up 24 hours a day, for 2000 days on end, and rarely have to return to our bedroom.
Companions: How did Persona do better at this than Hogwarts: Legacy? We can go on a few adventures with a few students/professors, but often they won't otherwise talk to you or interact with you, and you may never see some of them again. I'd much prefer the "Confidante" system from Persona in which there are many teachers/students/non-Hogwarts people you might meet, and by choosing to spend more time with them (maybe, choosing to take them on a quest with you), you "level up" with them, increasing certain bonuses when travelling with them as a friend (one friend is great at potions! Another negotiates better prices in Hogsmeade! Etc). This means that some characters may remain unexplored and others might attain "best friend" status... but it's a little more under your control (and adds to replayability).
One random complaint that isn't a Persona comparison, necessarily: the world feels really superficial and un-lived in at times. When you eat a handful of nuts or an apple, it's... really unsatsifying. Nuts go flying randomly out of the bowl and we're to assume our character has eaten some. It feels very 2002 PS2-level graphics when they could've taken the extra time to put a hand to their mouth, show them with full cheeks, saying "Mmm!", etc. One of my favorite feelings in the books was reading about their great feasts and midnight snacks, and that whole feeling was lost and incredibly superficial in the game. Not to mention the lack of available conversations or interactions with a world full of people during the days and nights... here, I think of Witcher III which felt incredibly bustling, alive, and lived-in.
I recognize that no game can be everything (except Witcher III, which is near-perfect)(oh, and Persona 5 Royal, which is near-perfect)... but I would've loved it if Hogwarts: Legacy had pulled off a game that was likewise near-perfect in that way that makes it an unimpeachable classic. For you angry apologists, I totally get that CD Projekt Red got to make Witchers I and II and that Atlus got to make Personas prior to producing such excellent products... so I of course have hope for future improvements! But the game felt a bit flat for me, and I wanted so many more feelings of comfort, fun, thrill, and comeradeship from this game than it gave me -- despite being really beautiful, points there for sure.

2023.06.05 04:42 BlackTemplars Hawaii - two week honeymoon trip review Dec 2022
Have some time to finally write a trip review for
Maui and the
Big Island of Hawaii for my honeymoon in December 2022 for two weeks. Mid December and left for home on Christmas Day. This was our first time redeeming cc points for anything, so lots of trial and error and lessons learned.
My wife and I had gotten married in October and were actually not planning going on honeymoon until Spring 2023 until we researched further and managed to make December 2022 work in our favor. We started planning and booking reservations TWO months before our trip. We are very fortunate to have done it in that time span and managed to make almost everything work out.
IAD - DTW - SEA - OGG on
Delta, First Class One way.
- First time using a lounge ever was at DTW. We had access to the Sky Club there. Pretty good food here, very roomy. No time to lounge in Seattle
- only I used points for this one way flight. Transferred 95,000 Amex points to Delta. Wife paid $958 before tax for hers through the Amex travel portal. I think she got a steal as I had written on a note somewhere that the cash cost was $1533 through Delta directly but cannot remember if that was the increased price after purchasing the tickets or at time of purchase, otherwise it would have been 1.61 CPP.
- Very nice service in first class. Abundant alcohol and food was very nice as well.
Maui Day 1
Got to Maui late in the night and picked up our rental car, a Chevy Equinox, with Enterprise. Used my
Hilton Aspire to get 7x points.
One night at
Courtyard Marriott by the airport and paid $500.
It was the best we could do with our timing.
Day 2 - 6
Breakfast and lunch was by the food trucks near Costco. Shopping nearby for supplies for our vacation.
Meals (Costco food trucks):
- Mo 'Ono Hawaii acai bowls
- Da Nani Pirates fish tacos
- fresh coconut water
5 nights at the
Grand Wailea - 440,000 HH points
Left to check into our resort the
Grand Wailea in Wailea. Both the wife and I are
Hilton Diamond members. Mine through the Hilton Aspire and she has status through actual stays. We booked these nights through her account and using all Hilton points. Each reward night was 110,000 points and we got the 5th night free. So 440,000 points total.
This resort was huge and immaculate. Words can describe how nice this place is and the customer service is SUPERB. Literally, the best we have ever experienced. You only have to see and experience it for yourself. My wife and I still talk weekly about the Grand Wailea.
We booked the
Terrace View - 1 King Bed as the Standard Night Reward and upon arrival we were upgraded to the
Deluxe Ocean View - 1 King Bed in the Molokini wing. Breathtaking views! Avg cash price so this room type is around ~$988 before taxes, fees so it comes to 0.89 CPP (if not including taxes, fees in the total). All meals, incidentals, shopping, and experiences were put onto my Hilton Aspire. Daily food and beverage credit was $25 each for the two of us and used usually at their divine but pricey breakfast buffet. No resort fees charged for booking with points which saved us hundreds of dollars. We immensely enjoyed ourselves at this resort and the lush, manicured surrounding area.
Meals:
- Lineage Maui. A favorite in the Wailea area
- Morimoto - Maui. Getting the sticky ribs is a must. As well as the ishi yaki buri bop. The guy won Iron Chef because of that, apparently
- Wolfgang Puck's Spago at the Four Seasons. Got the best seat in the house here. Get the "Poke" cones and Hawaiian snapper
- Mama's Fish House. Literally the hardest restaurant to get on Maui. Must reserve 4-6 months in advance. I called two months before our trip and managed to get a table for the two of us for late lunch. We arrived and we got the best seat in the house overlooking the water! Shout out to Mike for his superb service.
- Lahaina Grill. Another favorite for tourists and locals
Experiences: renting a cabana at the Grand Wailea pool, spa day at the Four Seasons with outdoor hale beachside, Wailea Beach, hiking Twin Falls, Baby Beach, Haleakala National Park
Day 7 - 8
Two nights at the
Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateaux using
Amex FHR.
Paid total ~$3400 for the
One bedroom, Luxury Suite, Ocean View. Unfortunately, no upgrade upon checking in. Hotel was sold out. Daily breakfast in the form of $30 credit per person and $100 food/bev credit given through the FHR. This stay triggered the $200 FHR credit for my wife's
Amex Plat Quiet, small resort, adults only. We enjoyed our stay here and loved our room. Bed was harder than what we were use to and it was far from the beach. Otherwise we loved the restaurant and the ability to "get away". One of the top hotels in Maui and all of Hawaii. Price tag to boot.
Meals:
- The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea. Another great dinner watching the sunset
- Leoda's Pie Shop. Any pie is great, get the banana cream though. Lines out the door
- Merriman's Maui. Another top-notch restaurant with hard to get reservations. One of my personal favorites the whole trip. Another sunset dinner favorite
Experiences: cabana and pool day at Hotel Wailea, spa day at Montage Kapalua Bay. Outdoor hale with hot tub.
Big Island of Hawaii Day 9 OGG - KOA (Big Island) round trip booked with
Hawaiian Airlines. $106 for each of us before baggage fees. Booked direct using wife's Amex Plat.
Arrived to the Big Island and rented a Toyota Prius though Budget. Paid using
Hilton Aspire.
Day 9 - 15
We booked the Hilton Waikoloa Village using all Hilton points, 6 nights in total with one night free. 350,000 pts in total used, 70,000 each night. Initially the standard room redemption was for the
Palace Tower Resort View - 1 King Bed and was going for ~$540 a night before taxes/fees so CPP was 0.77. We realized even before our trip that the Palace Tower and old, needed a refresh, and was terribly far from the beach and the parking lot. We asked for an upgrade when we checked in and was given the option to move to the
Makai Tower - Ocean View 1 King Bed for an additional $75 per night. We promptly took this offer. This room runs ~$694 per night before taxes/fees and if I subtract the $75 per night, I calculate this to be 0.88 CPP. The Makai tower was much better, our room overlooked the ocean and part of the resort. Frankly, Palace looked like dogshit. Daily F&B credit was $18 for each person. Incidentals again went onto my
Hilton Aspire.
Towards the end of our stay, we stayed at the
DoubleTree Hilo using 50,000 pts. Room rate was $308 before taxes/fess. CPP was 0.61. This was on the other side of the island and very far from Hilton Waikoloa so we decided to stay overnight there after hiking Volcanoes NP instead of driving to the west side in the middle of the night.
Meals:
- Brown's Beach House - at the Fairmont Orchid
- Kilauea Lodge
- Merriman's - Big Island
Experiences: Kauna'oa Beach, Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing (this is a must!!), Captain Cook monument snorkeling, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National historical park, Punalu-u Black Sand Beach, Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls.
Trip home: OGG - LAX - IAD.
United, First Class One way.
- Used 220,000 Chase UR rewards to redeem this flight for the both of us. Cash price of each ticket was ~$1485 before taxes/fess. CPP was 1.35
- Service was fine, food in 1st class was not very memorable.
- Did not have time to get into the Centurion lounge at LAX
Overall, an EXCELLENT trip. We were amazed and thrilled to do so much in two weeks and in such short notice. Again, only two months to plan once our dates were finalized. Between my wife and I, we have the
Amex Plat and Gold, Hilton Honors and Aspire, and CFU, CSP. Each card strategically used during our trip. The FHR credit triggered for my wife, and my Aspire triggered the $250 resort credit. If I had to guess, we saved
~$15,000 or more by redeeming CC points. Hope this data point helps some of you trip planning, happy to answer any questions.

2023.06.05 03:27 ApocalypticThoughts_ Being discriminated as an atheist ten years ago
I want to share and discuss a thought that kept recurring in my mind for a while. I don't know anyone I can discuss with on this. This is a LONG post btw
I still think about the bullshit from religious assholes from community college ten years ago. I was 18 years old back then. This one particular event still haunts my mind.
I remember this one girl I met at an art class, we were both art majors, and she was ARROGANT and INSECURE as hell. Like she would be giving out unasked advices or trying to help me on things I should know, like basic stuff, such as telling me to pick up my backpack with me when I was getting ready to leave (I was picking up my art case before my backpack, they were near each other! I can easily see my backpack! So wouldn't have I already know to do that?!?!). I tried to ignore it and assume she was just trying to be helpful. She would use words I wasn't familiar with and I even told her I don't know what they are, she hardly ever explained. She kept name-dropping and highlighting that she went to some Ivy League school before she went to a community college. She extremely sex-positive and makes her abstract art relate to sex. I didn't like that she once in a while show pornographic images in class, but I didn't say anything as part of my idea of freedom of speech.
She also acted like she was the big science tech-savvy nerd and I was dumb enough to come out to her I'm agnostic atheist. She stopped smiling and stopped acted goofy with me, asking questions. I was also dumb enough to admit that I really like Hitchens documentary on Mother Teresa and Bertrand Russell (his teapot theory), and wanted to do a painting to reflect that, before she told me about her parents. She told me her parents are deeply religious (out of curiosity, I looked up and learned how bizarre their beliefs are, like the End-Times and creationism BS).
I remember she was weirded out that my parents are "atheists" and they homeschooled me. They were actually secular, as my dad used to be atheist and my mom used to identify as an agnostic, the entire time she was raising me. Both of my parents were critical, not anti-religious, just very critical about religion. Her parents also homeschooled till she was 12. After that, I noticed sudden changes in demeanor.
Right after she learned that I'm secular, she had to give a feedback for my painting. She first gave out a sad signed and then talked monotonically, saying my painting reminds her name-dropping artists I never heard of. The next class, she gave me dirty looks, being far less friendly. She tried to talk to me to be insulting, like telling me she would use the certain tools or methods I was using (they were such bullshit, I'm like 100% certain that artists use them without a problem). I remember when she had to interpret my quick painting sketch, she told me that sketch of a place is in "God's view" and something like how he's always watching people and make them pay for sins they committed. I decided to give the girl silent treatment, no eye-contact and sat much further away, and only speak to her when I have to. She got the message but kept giving out passive-aggressive "criticism", like only giving negative comments about my paintings. She was dumb enough to admit that she knew the paintings are based on religion, while literally everyone else expect the instructor didn't know what my artwork were. I warned the teacher before that someone in class didn't like me for being an atheist, and she looked surprised. But she said that she didn't know who it was.
Here's the worse part, the art teacher LOVE her. I don't know if they were a couple, or they were just best friends (who knows? Either way, they were very, very, close before that girl enroll the class. Probably queer-platonic). She thought that girl was a "genius" and "brilliant" (I'm not exaggerating, her own words). She thought she was "rebellious" over her being very sex-positive and open about her sex-life (she often share with everyone that she's into BDSM, clubbing, and trying out sex stuff).
I didn't know that much, but when I was stupid enough to tell the instructor about her. She flat-out denied that she was would ever discriminate me for being atheist, nor was she mean or rude. She looked and gesture at me like I was extremely crazy. She kept saying in her own words that the girl was one of the "sweetest, kindest, nicest," and "most opened-minded" person she has ever met, and they know each other for three years. She assume that I got "scared" of her outgoing personality due to my shy and introverted personality. She suggested that I'm "scared" of sex-related topics, when I admitted that I don't like nor want to talk about it. Wrong, I'm actually asexual and at the time, sex was either nonexistent in my world or even repulsive. I didn't tell anyone though that I'm asexual and pretended to be "normal".
I told her that her parents are religious fanatics, evangelical Protestants that believe in the doomsday cult theory. She didn't believe me. The girl's best friend admitted in class that she thinks atheists are "wicked" "dangerous" and believes Christians are at risk being attacked in the US. She learned that I'm atheist and she flat-out refuses to talk to me, giving me evil eyes. She has to talks about my painting in class, and she kept calling me "Anti-Christian" and that I "hate America". She looked really disturbed and nervous. The teacher also like her (not as much as that girl) and believes she wouldn't discriminate me for being an atheist!
Next week, the instructor was incredibly rude towards me, giving me dirty looks with her arms crossed, shouted passive-aggressive "criticism" at me. Like she said something like "See! Isn't it that better to finally work on the hands", when she literally told me prior to wait to paint the hands of my painting for last and I told her immediately she said that. She said very rudely "I did? I don't remember!" She kept being insulting like anything I did, from what I named my painting to how ugly my signature looks on the painting.
She messaged me and told me that asked the girl about me, she told the teacher that she didn't know why I ignored her and stuff. Teacher told me there was "miscommunication". The next few days, the teacher did the weak nervous smile at me saying hi. She looked happy when she learned I didn't submit anything to the student art gallery event. I told her why, like how she didn't answer my email if they accepted wet paintings (prior to her meltdown after she learned about that girl). She said she "forgot" to confirm if they accept wet painting, such BS.
The girl "apologize" to me and claiming that she is sorry for whatever she has done to make me feel "scared" but for whatever that was (which she "doesn't know" what it was), she's "sorry". She also spoke in a higher pitch and swinging her body with her arms behind her back like a child. She looked like a cat that ate a canary.
I heard a few years later that the teacher forbides student creating anything "representational" and grades abstract art much higher, she also stopped teaching at community college a few years after and now is a professor and grad coordinator at my university (same state). I'm not art major, but damn I'll avoid her like the plague!
I'm curious what are anyone's thoughts on this?

2023.06.05 03:14 Miss_Revival Cancer support groups vs Fight club as Femininity vs Masculinity
So I've watched Fight club 3 times and every time I see/connect something new. This time I think I figured out the relation between fight club and cancer support groups. Before I get into it I'll preface this by saying that my understanding of (one of) the message(s) of the movie is that men should be men, although nothing should go to its extreme and they should express their masculinity and deal with the world in a manner suited to their gender, which is largely supressed in today's society. I'll also say that I am a woman :p
From there on we can get into the main point of this post: The cancer support groups are supposed to represent the feminine ways in which men are taught how to deal with the world. We see this in the fact that the first support group The Narrator goes to is literally...for guys without balls. What do they do there? They share emotions, hug, cry, they ask themselves "Are we still men?" desperately trying to hang onto that idea even though they accepted to "act like women". And this works for those men who have been castrated of their masculinity ( the representation of their psychological castration). In a way The Narrator really belongs there and it helps him too...until he finds something which actually fits him and which actually engages his masculinity. Then he never looks back. We see these feminine ways of dealing with life in other cancer support groups too. They try to escape, to find their "inner animal"...or what was it? Basically like looking for a safe space.
In fight club however, there's none of this, yet all those men actually start feeling like men, they start feeling like themselves, they are actually allowed to engage in their masculinity, fully. And perhaps that's not completely good either, but something finally clicks for them. The Narrator (with Tayler's "help") never goes back to that "safe place" again. He doesn't go back to his old self. All those men find what makes them feel alive, they find a way to finally express themselves in a society that supressed their true nature, in a society that doesn't allow agression and that is starting to veer more and more towards ideals of femininity (such as compassion, gentleness, submission, passivity...etc.)
What are we supposed to take from this? There is an apparent contrast between feminine ways of dealing with life (cancer support groups) and masculine ways (fight club). Obviously, the movie's main message when it comes to this issue is that the best place to be is somewhere near the middle. Where men are allowed to be men but aren't completely absorbed by the bad aspects of the ideals of masculinity. On the other hand it also warns us about the bad aspects of the feminine ideal. People can't be babies forever, they can't be cradeled forever and live in passivity and submission to "mother society", especially not men. So men, be your beautiful, masculine selves, that is what will make you feel whole, just don't punch people on the streets pls.

2023.06.05 02:56 Pigeon9 Nearly a year since the Crows played at Marvel or the G
Bit of a farce surely? July 10 2022 against the Hawks. They’ve played Hawks in Tas, Dogs in Ballarat and Geelong in Geelong this year. I’m not sure how you can take this competition seriously when a side competing for finals hasn’t played at a venue you often need to play finals at for nearly 12 months.
Soft theory going around the fanbase is that the AFL doesn’t want interstate teams with a big presence in Melb building a bigger fanbase there at the expense of some Victorian clubs - that’s tinfoil stuff but thought I’d still mention it.
Regardless though, just find it very weird that an interstate club whose fanbase travels extremely well hasn’t played more games in Melb
Edit: One game in Melbourne since May 9 2022
Another edit: a point I didn’t think of earlier, but I bet this increases the chances of players from Melbourne leaving the club, because they don’t travel home much at all.
