2023.06.06 23:28 HamwichSandwich m19 lost weight unhealthily 2 years ago and gained some of it back need advice on how to keep it off and look better overall
for context i m19 5’10 210 (currently) have bipolar disorder and have suffered from BED (binge eating disorder), bulimia and body dysmorphia for a long time something i went to treatment for and have since been on a journey of overcoming. In 2021 i got put on bipolar medication and one of the side effects of this medication or one of the realizations i got out of it was that i was a 235 lb 17 year old who didn’t know how to eat properly, didn’t take care of himself, and was constantly making himself sick in a vain attempt to cure what i thought the main problem was (my weight). I realized i needed to make a change.
In the months following that epiphany i had about my life i lost 50 lbs, with my lowest weight being 183 in october of 2021 down from my highest weight of 235 in april of that year.
The way i lost weight wasn’t the healthiest it was a lot of behaviors that i wouldn’t recommend and that i’m very lucky didn’t take as much of a toll on my health as they could have, such as stimulant and laxative abuse, going on eating disorder twitter and hoping that the people there would call me a fat f*** and give me the motivation i (thought i) needed to lose 50 lbs. This worked in the short term but was absolute hell for my self esteem.
At the end of the day i never reached my goal weight of 180 and instead of looking good i looked sickly and pale.
(pictures included in another post that i will link to soon)
Not to give too much detail but i ended up having to go to a rehabilitation center for my eating disorder where they helped identify the reasons behind my purging and it helped but i gained back to around 205 (because it was winter and they didn’t let us do any physical activity or go outside at all, i can explain further in the comments) when i got out and i was- well not as devastated as i thought i’d be. But still, it did feel like a step backwards.
I ended up going to an outpatient program after and through just eating consistently breakfast lunch and dinner and walking a lot (cardio seems to be my thing) i went back down to 190.
I stayed at 190 for about 4 months until my doctor switched me off one of my medications and the binge purge cycle started to creep itself back up after a couple weeks. I was drinking a lot of milkshakes at this time. I went up to 215.
My doctor recently prescribed me a new medication about 2 weeks ago that has suppressed my appetite a lot and as a result of that plus consistent work in the gym this past 5 days i have lost 5 lbs.
I’ve included some pictures of me at various weights including now, pre “epiphany”, and the 2 ish years i flip flopped between the different weights.
I need advice, any advice, on how to cut back and gain muscle, maybe what look/build i should go for based off my stats and how i look.
I’m willing to be
loseit’s personal project, i feel i have potential, but i also have no clue what i’m doing in the gym or with the food i eat, etc.
For reference of what i’d like to go for im really into 70s/60s bohemian or disco clothing and attire, but i also like the hippie or grunge aesthetics (ik they are very different) (well except for the dirt).
TLDR: I want to be
loseit’s pet project or at least i want some advice that can help get me where i want to be. Any advice at all, gym wise or other wise is appreciated

2023.06.06 19:34 rndrumm Need next step Advice with how to navigate company Leadership in Healthcare regarding working hours per week for RN's and/or out of box thinking. It's like navigating a negligent/abusive relationship.
Hi Helpful REDDIT Humans,I wrote this letter, below the numbered points, for the Betterment of the Group, along with the input of my co-workers. I uploaded this letter to the Town Hall site for the February 10th, 2023 meeting for reduced hours or think out of the box for the retainment of staff. We are burnt out and no one is listening. I don't even think they even read the letter we submitted below. I modified some of this for protection. We are a Union workplace, I have not involved the Union.
- We followed up a month later in March to Mike, Jeff, Liz and our manager Kelly (who likes to please leadership) and asked if they have come to any decisions, and also said if we could set up an appointment with any of them and it was CRICKETS.
- Two weeks later we followed up again and invited any of them to our floor to talk to us. Again, met with CRICKETS. No one is replying to us.
- We sent a 3rd follow-up a week later and asked to meet or they come to our floor. This time I included the National President of our company.
- We finally got a response when we sent it the the National guy!!!! The state Leadership, Mike and Jeff and Director Liz were not happy about this and We finally got a response that said that we have been spoken to by management several times over the last few months regarding there will be no changes to the FTE. This is how they are going to retain nurses for the current shortage.
- I replied that he received misinformation and no one came and talked to us. I asked 10 of my co-workers if they recall anyone talking to us about reducing hours or working 4-10's and no one recalls anyone coming to our floor.
- Director Liz comes down to our floor the next day for our 0720 huddle unannounced huffing, puffing and pissed. She has her arms crossed and said she s here to talk but nothing is going to change. So we asked if we can try out 4-10 hours shifts. She said yes, but no reduction in FTE or the use of PRN's (as needed nurses).
- I asked my manager Kelly for a blank schedule with how many nurses a day we need for the week, we took all the vacation requests for June and made it work using 21 nurses and no PRN staff!! We needed only 4 PRN nurses for the end of June to grant everyone the time off they asked for!!!!!
- I submitted it to Director Liz and AGAIN had to follow-up a week later of what they thought. I asked my manager how the meeting went and she said they are running the numbers and I told her to please send this information out because the staff, at this point is demoralized. She did and it has been 2 weeks.
- THIS IS WHERE WE NEED HELP. They just want us to go AWAY. This is very dysfunctional and neglectful. What is our next step? It has been 4 months of this.
THIS IS THE INITIAL LETTER WE SENT IN FEBRUARY: To: Mike - Regional President Jeff, MD - President, Executive Medical Director
From: Gastroenterology Staff - RN’s and MA’s
Re: Flexible Schedules to Reduce Burnout and Increase Quality of Life Hello Mike and Jeff Thank You for holding this Town Hall meeting for the Region employees. We would like to take this opportunity to share with you our thoughts, ideas, feelings, and concerns regarding our life here in GI. Please know, GI is a wonderful place to work, our team is dynamic and patient care is fulfilling. As healthcare professionals, we are always looking for ways to improve patient safety and member satisfaction, improve our efficiency and make Kaiser Permanente Thrive. Our concern and frustration are that the required full-time employment (FTE) is unThriving many of us into the ground. It is demoralizing and makes it challenging to create a work-life balance. We have tried going the normal route of speaking to our managers. We have been told by Kelly our manager, that GI leadership says to talk to the Union, and we have spoken to the Union ad nauseam about this. A petition was circulated in the three GI departments to garner support for addressing FTE, which is below and shared with Nate our Union representative. Nothing has come of it. Union Reps have spoken to Steve, who is Kelly's Boss and it ends there, we have no idea if he presents it to Liz, who is the Ambulatory Surgery Center Admin. We are trying a new route, going from the top down. Our People Pulses reflect our dissatisfaction on several levels, but we never get to go over them as a Department to see if we can make improvements and talk about issues. We feel as though we are not Seen or Heard. Company has approximately spent $160,000 training Eight nurses that have left for three 12 houfour 10 hour shifts or went PRN THIS YEAR. Because Five/8 hour days are not sustainable. It takes approximately 2 months to train a nurse to get them up and running and a year or two to feel seasoned in GI. It is very stressful for the department to keep training people only to have them leave because the FTE is a 1.0 and then they realize the required hours are not sustainable. At the end of our workday, and work week we have very little time or energy to take care of family, home responsibilities and ourselves. As RN’s and MA’s our jobs in GI are very dynamic, physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. Physically we are constantly moving beds in and out of rooms, adjusting beds and patients for each case, getting patients ready for their procedures, making beds, and restocking supplies. During procedures some patients require a great deal more hands-on, applying pressure on the abdomen to help the doctor advance the scope through the colon, upper endoscopies may require us to hold hands, and or bracing the patient to help the DR. perform the procedure. Mentally we always have to be on. We are always assessing patients. Pre-oping patients many skills and assessments. During intra-op we are constantly assessing patients for safety and ensuring patient comfort, documenting the many patient assessments, and medication administered all while taking biopsies, cauterizing polyps, inking sites in the colon, dilating the esophagus, getting through tortuous colons, etc.
Also, many of the patients are anxious/angry or are being diagnosed with cancer and other GI diseases, all of which require extra care and can be emotionally draining. Our many work demands are unique to this department. Demands, that make us both love our job and also a need to create a balance of self-care to help us fulfill the Kaiser Permanente Mission. Quite simply, many of us are burnt out: There is increased absenteeism - which costs Company $ Increased employee turnover - which cost Company $ Increased employee workplace stress between employees - which costs Company $ Decreased employee trust, loyalty, motivation and morale - which costs Company$ Decreased employee productivity - which costs Company $ Harm to Company's Reputation and decreased respect for the organization’s mission and vision - which costs $ Please consider that St. Joe’s has openings for part-time work with benefits. GI in Oregon has 4/10 hour shifts, so does GI in California, California barely has a lot of 1.0’s, So it can be done, and it has been done at Kaiser in the past. Please consider changing the required FTE to 0.8 for Full Time/and the flexibility for 4-day/ 9-hour shifts, and 4-day /10-hour shifts for the RNs, and MAs. This would be beneficial and the staff would have the flexibility to schedule healthcare appointments for themselves and their families, get their car fixed, take their pets to the vet, increase their quality of life, and decrease stress. As we prioritize patient care, we also want all of our coworkers to have the ability to take care of themselves and their families. We have attached a screenshot of the seniority lists at all three GI locations. I think it's important to mention the inequality of FTE distribution across the three locations- Franklin has a much higher number of over all 1.0's, 13 total. All the 1.0 staff are getting resentful of fellow co-workers' lower FTE. Franklin alone has lost 5 - 1.0 just that have left Franklin GI this year. People who left (or are leaving) that were 0.6-0.8 FTE who then had their positions posted as a 1.0: Robin 0.7 last day 3/3 Heidi 0.6 People who left due to being unhappy with a 1.0 FTE in GI: Matthew - moved out of state Sara - went to KASC Lone Tree - 3/12’s Sara - went to KASC Franklin - 3/12’s Jane - went to Minors Lone Tree - 4/10’s Anna - went to Minors Rock Creek 4/10’s Jason - left for reduced hours outside of Kaiser Heidi - just gave her notice and is going to Ortho PRN Chanda-left procedures to do fibroscans With a 10-hour day shift this would allow us to; call patients, scrub schedules, and have a list of patients that can come in the next day when we see an opening. For example, a doctor had 3 cases fall off that cost Kaiser $3,000 - $1,000 per 30 minutes. We have about a 11 percent no show rate at Franklin, we could improve that by calling patients and filling in the gaps if the patient cancels with another patient. Scrubbing the schedules and increasing profits for Kaiser..there are so many ways we can be more dynamic and profitable. We can start a little earlier to set up our rooms, right now we have 15 minutes. Since Kaiser is coming down on the Doctors to do more and more and more, they are coming into our rooms earlier and earlier because Kaiser is making them do more in the same amount of time. It’s RUSH, RUSH and RUSHing all around. Please let us know how we can help support our case for a .8 FTE and/or 4 ten hour shifts. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter as it is very important to many, if not all of the RNs in the Colorado GI departments.
If this doesn’t make it to the Town Hall, would you please respond to us regarding your thoughts about our letter, People Pulse, and maybe a visit to our Unit? It would mean a lot to hear a rationale instead of deaf ears and the word NO all the time, Or we can’t change it, because your schedule revolves around the Doctor’s schedule. Why is it so hard to TRIAL and/or TRY DIFFERENT schedules out to see if it makes an improvement? Thank you for your time and for listening to us, GI Colorado
The letter below was from GI, circulated July 2022 Dear Company, We, the Employed Registered Nurses (RNs), Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and Local 7 Healthcare Professionals, are respectfully requesting that full time employment (FTE) hours be reconsidered.
As committed employees of Company, we share the mission to deliver quality health care to every member. Our training to assess and care for our patients demands we be at our best with every patient contact, prioritizing patient safety and wellbeing. Currently new Registered Nurses are being hired at a 1.0 FTE, whereas RNs in the past have been hired at .9 and there are long term RN’s that are employed at a .8, .7 and .6 FTE. A five day, forty-hour work week does not allow for a balance between work and life, and limits flexible scheduling options for many RN and APP positions.
Kaiser invests a considerable amount of time to train newly hired RNs, and APPs. These new hires are initially excited to be a part of a respected and prestigious organization. They soon learn that the demands and inflexible scheduling are not conducive to creating a balance between career and family responsibilities or interests outside of work. We are hearing from our colleagues that they will not apply for a position that requires a forty-hour work week. We are losing good people to other organizations so that they can maintain a work life balance. As RNs, APPs, Local 7 Healthcare Professionals who value our careers as health care providers for Kaiser Permanente Members, we respectfully request that full time employment be flexible and part time positions be offered to allow for a work life balance. We are available to have an in person meeting to discuss this in further detail. Thank you for your serious consideration, GI

He goes on to say, “They are critical to our future because we depend upon people to deliver our health care. Sure, technology and well-calibrated equipment are also key tools in health care delivery, but it’s the people who bring the experience to life for our members and key stakeholders. Plus, in order for us to be respected in our field and viewed as America’s health leader, we must walk our talk.” Supporting a work environment that promotes employee health, wellness, and work-life balance is directly aligned with KP and Labor Management intentions and goals. https://www.theskimm.com/money After dealing with labor shortages and employee burnout, companies are taking things up a notch with work perks in 2023. And we’re not just talking about lunch stipends or ping-pong tables in the office. It’s called proactive rest. And it’s more than just taking your vacation days. Because waiting until you’re burned out to take care of yourself is so 2022. What is proactive rest? Proactive rest is how some companies are stepping up to prevent employee burnout at work, according to a Gartner workplace trends report. Instead of only relying on PTO, workplaces are adjusting their policies to give their employees breaks and flexibility. It's similar to active recoveries in fitness — rather than taking a full day of rest from working out, you might opt for a walk or some stretching instead. At work, proactive rest might look like: No-meeting blocks. When your company designates certain hours or days for no meetings. Flexible lunch breaks. Meaning, employees can choose when they take their breaks. Mandatory breaks. And that could be in addition to lunch. It may look like “wellness time” for you to take naps in the afternoon. Four-day work weeks. As in, getting the same amount of work done in fewer days — with no pay cuts. Office closures. That could mean a week-long company-wide break or summer Fridays. So you can switch from “TGIF” to “TGIT” from June through September. View post on Instagram Why is proactive rest important? Prioritizing rest can help companies boost productivity. It may sound counterintuitive, but a Gartner survey found a 26% increase in performance at companies that incorporated proactive rest. Plus, it could incentivize people to apply for jobs at these companies — and even slow turnover rates. Because burned out employees are more than three times likely to look for new jobs. For employees, burnout is still extremely common. And being able to get ahead of it can help avoid having to recover from burnout later on. Building rest into the work calendar can help encourage employees to actually use it. Because Americans aren’t the best at taking their PTO, even when it’s offered. And they typically put in extra hours: The average employee worked nine unpaid hours per week in 2022. If it sounds like hustle culture, it is. While it may be helpful for climbing the corporate ladder, it might come at the expense of your mental health. View post on TikTok theSkimm Companies are taking extra measures to keep employees’ mental health in check in 2023. Because free office snacks just aren’t cutting it anymore. And having the freedom to take care of yourself now can prevent you from struggling down the road.

2023.06.06 17:11 yourmom1536 Service in US Army Reserves while full-time international student
I am an American international student currently studying at Aberystwyth University, I have just competed a foundation year and will be starting my actual undergraduate course this September.
Over the past year I have developed a strong interest in healthcare and medicine (my degree course is in an unrelated field) and I have been volunteering as a first aider with St. John Ambulance Service.
I have recently become interested in becoming a medic in the US Army Reserves to expand my medical knowledge and certifications and I like the idea of getting to simultaneously study full time in the UK, give back to the UK and my community through St. John Ambulance, and serve my home country all at the same time. Plus there are reserve units in Germany that I could commute to each month fairly easily which is a cool bonus.
My initial entry training could theoretically be done over two summers (basic training one summer, then go to uni for the year, then my actual job training the next summer) I understand that this part would be fine as it would not be during term time, however after my training is complete, I would be required to commute to Germany one weekend per month to serve with my unit.
Given the work restrictions of my student visa I am unsure if this would be allowed, I have heard conflicting information saying that any overseas employment is counted as being self employed and therefore not allowed, and others have said that rule only applies to work being done within the UK, such as working remotely for an overseas company that does not follow UK tax laws and all that.
I am also curious if it is possible to suspend student visas and resume them later in special circumstances, for example in the fairly unlikely event (at least with current foreign policy) I was deployed for a period of time, or if being deployed would cause me to lose my student visa and technically be deported or banned or anything like that. I would understand if no accomodations would be made regarding my studies or visa status considering I would be serving in a foreign (albeit allied) military and that the UK would not owe me anything like that.
If it came down to one or the other I would rather continue my education in the UK as it is such an amazing opportunity but I like the idea of potentially getting to study and serve at the same time and get the best of both worlds essentially.
I apologize for the fairly long post or if any of it is confusing at all, if any of you have any further questions for me please let me know, and I thank you all in advance for your help and advice!

2023.06.06 13:35 Over_It_Mom A car accident took everything from us but his life. Please help me reach this goal by his post surgical appointment June 29th.
| December 12th my sweet, intelligent, independent 24 y/o son was rushed to the emergency room trauma center with life-threatening injuries and a rapidly swelling brain. Doctors were surprised when he made it to the hospital. John had been in an in an auto accident. My son was given minimal chances of survival despite emergency surgery. We were told he'd be hooked up to tubes the rest of his life when he made it through the night. It's been a roller coaster for the last 5 months and we are nowhere near the end of this road. I always knew my son was in that very broken body, we have a special bond and I knew he was communicating with me. John chose to stay and fight but we are running out of funds for all the things insurance does not pay for. Today we are 4 days post bilateral cranioplasty reconstruction of John's skull after he is breathing independently he'll come home to heal. Insurance does not pay for any home equipment besides the bare basics and we need some help. I've gone through our savings and when John Villa comes home from surgery much more will be needed. I have created an Amazon list with the most needed small medical, food, other supplies for continued rehab at home . This go find me is for larger needs transportation, equipment to get walking again and assistance paying for the gap in insurance vs actual expenses. Please help if you can, share anywhere and everywhere you are comfortable doing so and hug your loved ones. Thank you in advance, Tiffany submitted by Over_It_Mom to gofundme [link] [comments] |

The Jacksons reveal that they are working on a brand new album and world tour. 1988 - Michael Jackson plays the second of three nights at Stadion Feijenoord (De Kuip) in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to an audience of 48,400 https://preview.redd.it/4qr86gwtih4b1.jpg?width=397&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=065076d5ac2f069c7d92706231ac094447d82ce3 1990 - It was announced that Michael, who has been hospitalized for 2 days after complaining of chest pains, is suffering from a cartilage inflammation of the front part of the ribs and will be released "within the next 48 hours" Speaking in front of St. John's Hospital, publicist Bob Jones read a statement from Jackson's attending cardiologist, Mark Zatzkis, who said the 31-year-old is suffering from an inflammation called costochondritis, "which can be caused by overexertion and stress and is usually extremely painful." This condition, Jones added, "is something that happens to football players a lot." He said Jackson has undergone "extensive laboratory and X-ray testing, including the heart and lungs," which revealed "no abnormalities." After his release, Jackson will be an outpatient for seven to 10 days. The star's cardiologist told Jones that before Jackson "completely resumes full activities, a treadmill test is going to be performed." Asked if that was being administered to check his heart, Jones said, "I didn't ask him. He's a cardiologist, so presumably so." Today, children from the Culver City YMCA arrived at the hospital unannounced to sing a song and give Michael a banner. Although the hospital spokesman said security guards were momentarily unnerved, the children's banner was taken up to Jackson, who was sleeping at the time. Only minutes after Jones finished his press conference, several Jackson siblings- brothers Marlon, Randy and Jackie, and sister Rebbie - arrived together to visit their brother. Smiling, they paused briefly at the entrance and were immediately mobbed by reporters asking questions. "I haven't seen him yet," said Randy with a laugh. "He's a strong person," said Jackie. "I know he's gonna pull through." There's been speculation that Michael had been suffering from stress over his 'Long-overdue album' as well as depression over the recent deaths of Sammy Davis Jr. and his grandmother, and Ryan White "Stress is a very important factor," Jones said of Jackson's ailment. "I don't say he's worrying too much," he said, but "I would certainly like to see him rest more." Asked if his recuperation would set Jackson back in his recording work, Jones said: "It's seven more days off. We're already eight months off schedule. Michael Jackson is one of the best artists around. I'm not concerned." 1996 -Michael appears on MTV Asia’s Channel V and says: "Hi, this is Michael Jackson. The first to be Number 1 entertainer of the month on Channel V, the best channel in Asia." The TV station then showed clips from "Black or White" and the prison version of "They Don't Care About Us." Michael's videos will be played throughout the month on MTV Asia 1997 - Michael plays Weserstadion in Bremen, Germany on the HIStory World Tour https://preview.redd.it/9vls2ytvih4b1.jpg?width=526&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=85ad225dee4d8fbac1f6da004ca27b0bd738bbb2 2005 - Jury Deliberations Day 2 A jury question had a question which prompted a private conference between opposing attorneys and the Judge 2007 - Michael takes his children to a private, two-hour tour of "Bodies -The Exhibition" and "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition" at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. 2008 -Michael takes Prince, Paris and Blanket to see Kung Fu Panda at Brenden Theatres in Las Vegas 2009 - Michael rehearses "Billie Jean" & "Man In The Mirror" 2013 - Jackson v AEG Trial Day 25 No Jackson family is at court Randy Phillips Testimony Jackson direct Plaintiff's attorney Brian Panish started out by asking AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips about his preparations for today. Phillips said he spent about 2 hours and 15 minutes preparing for today's testimony. Today's testimony was very focused on emails Panish asked Phillips who subpoenaed his phone records. The exec confirmed it was LAPD Panish focused almost all his questions on emails that Phillips received or sent on June 19th and 20th of 2009. He focused on emails we've seen before from production manager John "Bugzee" Hougdahl and director Kenny Ortega. Panish went through some of the calls Phillips made. On 6/18/09, Gongaware sent an email to Phillips with all of Dr. Murray's phone numbers. Panish: "Do you normally carry around all the contact numbers of your artist's personal physicians?" Phillips: "Absolutely not! Most of the artists we don't deal with their personal physician" Next Panish referred to the email with the subject "Trouble at the Front" from Bugzee saying Michael went home without stepping foot on stage. "I think I read this email before I went to bed on 6/19," Phillips said. Panish pointed out that at the deposition Phillips said he read it after sunrise. "I don't want to argue with you either, I don't think it's fair to the jurors," Phillips told Panish after a short exchange between them. "Since the deposition, my memory had gotten better because I was given documents and tried to remember what happened," Phillips testified. Panish: "You are not a drama queen, right?" Phillips: "Sometimes" "Yes, I'm under oath," Phillips joked about having to tell the truth. Panish: "What changed from your deposition and today?" Phillips: "Nothing, absolutely nothing, just that I'm very prepared" Panish: "Did Mr. Jackson have a problem on June 20th?" Philips: "Absolutely" Panish asked if Phillips remembered his reaction after receiving this email. "Yes, yes. Concerned," Philips responded. Panish showed video of Phillips' deposition where said he didn't remember how he reacted when the received the email Hougdahl relayed a quote from Jackson that night, in which he said: "You aren't going to kill the artist, are you?" Phillips said he thought Jackson was joking, but seemed to back off after Panish reminded him he wasn't at the rehearsal. Within 19 mins of receiving Bugzee's email on the evening of Jun 19, Phillips forwarded Bugzee's email adding: "We have a real problem here." Just over four minutes later, Leiweke responded to the email asking for a meeting between him, Michael, Phillips and Kenny Ortega. Phillips said he forwarded the email to Ortega and asked him to set up the meeting. Ortega responded yes to the email the next morning. The meeting Tim asked didn't happen that day, Phillips explained. But there was a meeting in the afternoon of June 20th, he said. Bugzee replied back to Phillips that Michael needed a shrink and trainer, deteriorated in front of his eyes for eight weeks. "That's what he wrote, I'm not sure exactly what he meant," Philips said. Panish asked what Bugzee said about the 360 turns: "He was telling me MJ couldn't do a 360 spin." Phillips: "I know what he said, but until we had the meeting I didn't know what was going on" Panish: "It shows someone's physical condition deteriorated, right?" Phillips: "It shows that there's a problem, yes. The word deteriorate may not be what happened. I didn't know what was going on until we had the meeting" Phillips then forwarded the email chain to John Branca, Joel Katz, Tim Leiweke (his boss), adding: "Unfortunately we are running out of time" Phillips received another email from Bugzee saying Michael was shaking and couldn't eat, Ortega had to cut his food, feed him. Phillips answered the email saying he was not sure what Michael's problem was, chemical or physiological. Panish went through 5 different answers Phillips gave as explanation for this email, from not knowing what chemical means to possible drug reaction. Ortega then sent another email to Randy, saying he believed Michael needed to be psychologically evaluated. Phillips testified today he agreed with what Kenny said. In his deposition, Phillips said he didn't recall. He also rejected the idea that he was responsible for Jackson's health. "I'm not responsible for his medical needs," Phillips said. "We're promoters & that's what we do." "I'm not responsible for Michael's health, he's an adult, he had a personal doctor," Phillips said. Phillips testified he didn't contact any psychologist or psychiatrist after Bugzee and Ortega said Michael hould be checked out by one Phillips testified he never said he was going to pull the plug on the show and never threatened Michael with pulling the plug. Panish asked if Phillips ever told Ortega it was not his job to question Michael's health/doctor care. He replied, "No" Branca responded to the email from Phillips saying he had the right therapist/spiritual advisor. The email does not name who the doctor is, but Phillips testified shortly ago that he remembered a name. He said he was wrong about it. Some jurors shook their heads when Phillips and Panish argued with each other and the judge intervened. Panish: "Did Mr. Branca ever tell you who the psychiatrist was?" Phillips: "No" Panish: "Did you ask him for the name?" Phillips: "No" Panish: "Did you ever do anything?" Phillips: "Only the meeting on the 20th" Jackson's business manager, Michael Kane, emailed Phillips, asking for an advance. AEG already had lent Michael more than $30 million for production costs on This Is It, settling a lawsuit in Bahrain and for rent on a Holmby Hills mansion. Phillips responded to Kane on June 20, 2009: "This is why it is impossible to advance any $$$. He may, unfortunately, be in anticipatory breach at this point" Kane, quickly replied: "And I thought it couldn't get worse" Phillips response: "It could, Kenny Ortega could quit" Kane asked: "Would a financial coming to Jesus speech help or add to his pressure?" Phillips wrote back: "It would help. At this point we need to break through. I am going to call his doctor to discuss" Phillips: "He (Kane) asked for a million dollars to pay for Mr. Jackson's bills" Panish: "You anticipated Michael would breach the contract by not showing up to rehearsal?" Phillips: "Yes" Phillips: "None of our agreements have 'artist need to rehearse', but the artists want to perfect their show" Phillips said if Michael's lack of appearance caused production to not complete, & the show to not open in London, Michael could be in breach of his contract "Required is a little too strong, I was concerned that if he didn't go to rehearsal Kenny could not finish the production. I felt Michael had that obligation, yes," Phillips said about MJ needing to be at rehearsals. He denied that he ever threatened Jackson over missed rehearsals: "We would have never dealt with Michael that way" Phillips would not advance any more money to Michael on June 20th because Michael may have been in breach of contract already, Phillips testified. "AEG Live would've survived it (show) not happened," Phillips said. He agreed that part of his concern was that AEG Live would look bad. Panish: "You felt Mr. Jackson's not going to rehearsal ... may have placed him in breach of the contract. That's why you wouldn't advance him any more money?" Phillips: "Yes" Phillips agreed there was a lot of money at stake on the tour, but he said he also was concerned about Jackson's career if he pulled out. Panish talked about the email Ortega sent saying Michael needed a strong therapist and immediate physical nurturing. "I think he needed both, so in this case I'm not sure he meant therapist or psychiatrist," Phillips said. After Ortega wrote him an email saying the singer should be "psychologically evaluated", Phillips wrote back: "I am stymied on who to bring in as a therapist and how they can get through to him in such a short time" Phillips first testified he thought Ortega meant a physical therapist, then switched to physical or mental health therapist and then finally agreed it was a mental health professional. He said neither a psychiatrist nor a psychologist was contacted. Panish made a mistake in one exhibit and Phillips reacted immediately. Phillips:"See, we all make mistakes" Panish: "I haven't made 50 of them" Phillips: "I don't know, I haven't watched the entire trial" Phillips said the meeting with the doctor was at the request of Frank DiLeo. Phillips' testimony ended for the day before he discussed the meeting with Murray, Ortega and others. Panish wanted to play a Frank Dileo voicemail that was played during the Murray trial trying to set up a meeting and get Jackson tested. Judge tentatively rules the voicemail couldn't be played for this jury on hearsay grounds. Court Transcript submitted by FelicitySmoak_ to MichaelJackson [link] [comments] |

2023.06.06 12:22 yerederetaliria Our first date
Intro:
https://www.reddit.com/yandere/comments/142b5vq/irl_yandere_couple_experiences/
I don’t know where to begin. I’m leaving out the six months of me stalking and the events that led up to our first date which are interesting. The IRL request was for our interactions. The date was not natural but orchestrated. This is our first "date." The date was setting him up on my behalf. He was under the impression that he was supporting the campus club we had been attending. I had been stalking him for six months and finally asked for some help.
Jenny and John were a couple and engaged to be married after graduation. They were Srs at Colo St Uni and they were leaders in IVCF, the large campus club Finnian and I attended. They were in charge of parties/activities and they had, with the help of other campuses, organized a St Valentine's Day dance. Jenny was an Education major who liked to play matchmaker and John was a Music major who played DJ in his spare time. Jenny and I were friends, not close, but she was more than willing to help me connect with Finnian. She didn't know I was his stalker and obsessed with him but she found out as our relationship progressed. She and I actually sat down, chatted and put together a plan. John and Finnian were casual friends because he and John shared music interests, specifically classical music. They would chat about all kinds of music. He had lunch with John one day and Jenny tagged along and turned the lunch into an interview and made Finnian promise to attend the dance. Finnian’s wingman, Brad bailed on him at the last moment. We all attended Colo St Uni, Fort Collins, and the dance was held at UNColo, Greeley. The group was carpooling and we met at a central parking lot on campus. Finnian volunteered to drive but Jenny insisted he was to ride with her and John. I had no car and was waiting in their backseat, this was a kind of double date. I believe in “Love at first sight” and “Divine appointments” and I feel we experienced both.
I remember waiting such a long time for Finnian to show and when Jenny saw him she signaled him and I felt my heart would climb out of my chest. I remember that he and Jenny bickered over the fact that he could drive people and she essentially pushed him into the back seat of their Honda Civic. After he sat down he said something to John in the driver's seat who remained silent. I leaned into Finnian and introduced myself. I was very assertive and scooted close to him, extending my hand to shake his and I awkwardly didn't let go of his hand. Finnian remembers that he felt backed up against the door and he was irritated at Brad, Jenny, John, the car, everything but as I leaned in I certainly gave him that uncanny stare because he forgot all about being irritated. He felt confused more than anything. He also remembers shifting me back so he could sit properly and that I just came forward again. So there we were in the back seat of a car on the way to Greeley with a half hour to kill. I was wearing a black Bohemian style dress with lace sleeves fitted at the top. He remembers that I wore amber jewelry because the jewelry accented my eyes which are green with an orange ring and my darker hair and dress made them glimmer. I remember he was nicely dressed, you know, a sports jacket and white shirt. He had this blue metallic tie on that made his eyes even bluer and hair blonder. I also remember at one point taking his arm and he was so tight and firm. He wasn't huge but he was toned. Like I said we had a 1/2 hr talk on the way to UNColo and the conversation happened immediately. We had too many things in common. In fact I'll talk about the set up to the date and conversation another time. The point is that we disappeared into conversation and barely acknowledged our hosts. Of course I continued to traditionally flirt with him by preening, touching him, leaning into him, complimenting him. Most of this was excitement on my part because I could tell we were meant for each other and in that little half an hour ride I was already confirming ideas in my head that we were going to take this to the next level. Remember, I said long term. I have the habit of elevating our relationship so what was a meeting turned into a date and a date turned into exclusive dating then girlfriend then wife. That ride was fantastic and we had a hard time not talking, both of us. I was absolutely floored that he knew conversational Spanish so we entered into bilingual territory on day one (we are now both bilingual).
Understand that we were not on a formal date and that I was just some woman he had met so when we arrived his assumption was, "thanks for the ride, John, I'll find my way around from here." I intercepted him and took him by his arm, I really wanted to walk into the venue with him. I desperately wanted us to be seen together, this has always been important to me. I still do this “I’m his” behavior. I began to completely monopolize his time. I was already starting to be seen as clingy and possessive and we weren’t officially together. He was tolerant and flattered and confused. Unfortunately, I don't remember why but we separated early on in the evening. I found him at a table chatting with a couple of guys he knew. He remembers that one of them was Eric. Eric had flirted with me months before and I clearly had shown no interest in him. I was already stalking Finnian by the time Eric had shown interest in me. I actually have no memory of it and my roommate Audrey later pointed it out to me. I learned my obsession caused me to actually block out people and events. I do not remember what Finnian was talking about or to who or why or any of that but he remembers me constantly interrupting them asking Finnian to dance. He remembers actually asking me if I needed to practice dance with him and that I reacted sorely. He remembers that I would alternate between sitting very very close to him and far away from Eric and me getting up to ask to dance for the next song. He also said that I started holding his hand and tugging on his wrist to get him to the dance floor. He clearly didn't want to dance but I won out when the music changed a little.
I got him to dance with me and he told me that he'll never forget how thrilled I looked and that we started to dance before getting all the way to the floor. He told me that the uncanny look I sometimes flash is often when I am thrilled. I remember that I turned him so he could only see me and not other dancers and not his little group of friends. This worked because we never saw them again until weeks later. This was 1999 and the music was a mixture of 80s and 90s with a mixture of pop, rock, alternative, Christian and rap. John had obviously influenced the DJ to play for this particular crowd. I remember that Finnian really tuned into the music we danced to and he later admitted that it was a "safe" place for him mentally. I do not intend on making him look like he was stupid or naiive it’s just that he had some bad experiences in the past and he was desperately trying to be “in control.” I was alternately smothering and backing off but from this point on I wouldn't let go until later. Neither one of us are great dancers but I was really turned on by how well we danced together. I loved touching him and he was trying so hard to be a gentleman. I also liked to direct his hands where I wanted them. This was me communicating and almost compulsively touching his hands. He remembered that his wrists were sore after that night which means that I was quite grabby. Some songs I wanted his hands on my waist and a few times I specifically directed him to put his hands on my hips. I wanted him to know that I was interested all around romantically in him. We slowed danced and fast danced for most of the night. The man typically leads while dancing but I would periodically resist going in a direction because I was trying to keep us isolated or uninterrupted from others. I do not remember what we talked about other than the songs playing and what to do while dancing. We were pretty much just being physical. At one point
this song was played and I remember he said he liked it. It had a unique theme. This is important because I would use it later in a confession of sorts and it would become one of our songs. We found even more in common like our taste in music which leans towards alternative.
Eventually we both really needed the bathroom and a break so I told him I’d meet him at the punch bowl. He didn’t show and I started frantically searching for him. After a few minutes I saw him outside in a patio garden area. This was a student center. So I followed him outside and he greeted me warmly and he pointed out some stars. We stargazed a little while. He has an interest in astronomy. There were fire pits and somebody was lighting them and we could still hear the music softly. He pointed out the planet Mars and I pretended I couldn’t find it. This was intentional. I wanted him to put his arms around me and point so I could look down his arm and rub up into him. He did that and I responded and when he put his arm down I quickly turned around, pressed into him, stared straight into his eyes. Then I said, “don’t run from me, I love you, I will follow you anywhere under the Milky Way.” Then we leaned into each other and kissed for a very long time. I don’t remember how I actually said the words and neither did he because it was rather dreamlike. He heard what I said and he said the phrase didn’t bother him. The following part didn’t seem serious to him until a week later. I was serious about it. Months later he told me that he made the decision to date me on the patio when he was alone. He thought it through and he felt that there were too many things happening in favor of us. He also told me that the fire from the fire pits made my eyes flash and it was very surreal. We went back inside, slowly danced and found a lonely corner to quietly talk. Eventually, we met Jenny and John near the door and I remember that Finnian was holding my hand. Jenny said that since we are hitting it off so well that tomorrow we can double date and go see an indie band at Avogadro’s Number, a local club. I answered for both of us a little too eagerly. Jenny later told me that he and I were “electric” that night. She also met a friend from UNColo who asked how long we had been dating to which she replied, “first date.” Her friend responded as if Jenny was fibbing. We drove home and we got caught up and started kissing again but we stopped when we heard that Jenny and John noticed. I could barely sleep that night. I was high.

Don't forget to like this post, subscribe to our channel, and enable notifications. And share your own experience or ask a question in the comments below. Sponsored by Beeyond compression packing cubes for travel - helping you save space when you travel and organize your suitcase. The link is in the description. And stick around until the end of this post because we have a bonus for you. Here are our top 10 picks: Number 10: Gastown Known as the oldest neighborhood in the city, Gastown is a picturesque district in downtown Vancouver. It takes its name from riverboat captain John "Gassy Jack" Deighton, believed to be one of the earliest settlers in the area in 1867. Deighton’s statue was recently torn down due to his controversial past. The neighborhood now preserves its historical character, evident by its heritage buildings and Victorian-style homes. Gastown received a national historic site of Canada designation in 2009 for its notable significance. Exploring Gastown is best discovered by wandering its cobbled streets. Sit in one of the countless restaurants and choose among incredible food options. The neighborhood has a vibrant atmosphere, full of art galleries, boutique shops, historic sites, and the iconic antique-style Steam Clock from 1977. The clock is powered by steam, and every 15 minutes it whistles to tell the time. It is the world's only still-operating steam-powered clock. Number 9: Unique transportation Forget about typical public transportation like busses and metros and rather embark on a water adventure by riding the cute Aquabus - a unique and colorful way to travel around False Creek, and a great way to use this ferry service also if you are planning to visit the Granville Island. Enjoy a breathtaking waterfront as you ride this rainbow-colored ferry. You can also take a harbour cruise with a dinner option or ride a SeaBus, a ferry service crossing and connecting Downtown and North Vancouver. There are other unique ways to discover Vancouver and its surroundings, like exploring the city from the sky by riding a seaplane, or embarking on a whale watching tour. Number 8: Science World Science World, located at the east end of False Creek, is a museum of science and technology built for the Expo 86 World Fair. Distinctive for its giant mirrored dome, Science World is one of Vancouver's most famous landmarks. Explore interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits, galleries, and live science demonstrations that will fuel your imagination. Whether you are a local or a traveler, alone or with the whole family, Science World is an exciting destination to spark wonder and ignite one's curiosity. Number 7: Capilano Suspension Bridge Park Capilano Suspension Bridge is a 450 ft long and 230 ft high suspension bridge spanning the Capilano River in North Vancouver. With its convenient location, the park is one of the most visited places in Vancouver, attracting over 1.2 million visitors every year. Although the bridge has been the main attraction since 1889, there are other things to explore in the park – it also offers thrilling treetop adventures with a breathtaking rainforest view. The Cliffwalk offers a heart-stopping, spectacular view of the canyon below. Enjoy casual dining with a scenic and captivating view of the park. If you visit Vancouver between November and January, don't skip Canyon Lights - when the park transformed into a magical world. We suggest hopping on one of their free shuttle busses departing from various locations in Downtown Vancouver. Number 6: Chinatown Vancouver's Chinatown is a historic neighborhood boasting traditional shops, cocktail bars, and rich Chinese lifestyle. The first Chinese immigrants arrived in Vancouver to work on railroads and in mining operations in the second half of the 1800s. The neighborhood developed into one of the largest Chinatowns in North America. In 2010, the it was recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada. Taste traditional and authentic Chinese specialties like dim sum in one of the neighborhood's restaurants. Walk around Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden's fascinating pavilions and pathways, the first of its kind outside China. There are other interesting neighborhoods in Vancouver. Check our travel guide for more information. By the way, our mobile-friendly travel guide covers the top 20 things to do in Vancouver, including maps, opening hours, links to buy tickets, and other information. Number 5: Vancouver Aquarium The Vancouver Aquarium is a popular tourist destination, home to thousands of aquatic species with over one million visitors every year. Established in 1956, it was the first and largest public aquarium in Canada. The facility is an aquarium and a center for marine research and rehabilitation. The aquarium offers a unique experience of the wonders of aquatic life through its impressive exhibits and displays. Learn about rescued marine life and watch cute sea lions in action. Vancouver Aquarium also features a 4D theatre that will transform your senses. Number 4: Vancouver Maritime Museum Dedicated to showcasing the maritime history of the Pacific Northwest and the Arctic, the Vancouver Maritime Museum is a museum in Vanier Park that opened in 1959. The Vancouver Maritime Museum has a collection of over 15,000 artifacts, numerous model ships, and old photos that tell the stories of important historical voyages and lost expeditions. The museum's most prominent exhibit is St. Roch, a large arctic vessel used during the first west-to-east journey at the Northwest Passage through the Arctic in the 1940s. Because to its significance, the exploration vessel is listed as a National Historic Site. You can actually climb aboard the historic boat and explore the decks and cabins. Don't skip the Ben Franklin, a yellow submarine outside the museum, built for a 30-day study in the Gulf Stream in 1969. Of course, there are other museums in Vancouver worth exploring, like the nearby Museum of Vancouver. Number 3: Vancouver Lookout Experience Vancouver in the best possible way by visiting a 553 ft high Vancouver Lookout Tower at Harbour Centre. The building was constructed in a popular brutalist style with large-scale use of poured concrete – a popular architectural style at the time. American astronaut Neil Armstrong opened the lookout in 1977. Vancouver Lookout observation deck gives a 360-degree panoramic view of Downtown and beyond. Vancouver Lookout also offers an audio tour and information panels that will help you learn about the different sights you see in front of you. Experience a breathtaking 40-second glass elevator ride of Harbour Centre, one of Vancouver's tallest buildings. You can even enjoy the Top of Vancouver Restaurant, a unique revolving diner. Number 2: Stanley Park Vancouver's first and largest urban park - Stanley Park, is a green space covering 1,000 acres of land, making up half of the city's Downtown area. The area was used by Indigenous people for thousands of years before the region was colonized by the British during the 1858 Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. Stanley Park was designated a national historic site of Canada for its beauty and connection to the environment and the city's culture. This large scenic landscape is filled with forest trails, an aquarium, beautiful beach areas, enchanting Lost Lagoon, and many other iconic sights. Walk around Rose Garden and Shakespeare Garden to enjoy beautiful landscaping paths. The park is also home Don't skip Vancouver Seawall which also passes around Stanley Park and has been declared the world's longest uninterrupted waterfront path. Number 1: Granville Island From a former industrial wasteland to a busy shopping and market hub, the small peninsula of Granville Island is home to over 300 businesses with a million tourists annually. Granville Island Public Market is the most popular attraction, described by many as a food paradise. The market boasts seafood, fresh produce, and gourmet goods from Asian, Mexican, and Greek specialties, and more. Granville Island is also known for its artistic side, with countless theater productions, art galleries and many events. Walk around parks with many hiking trails, enjoy a glass of beer in one of Canada's original microbreweries, or embark on a whale-watching tour; there are plenty of things to discover on the peninsula. And here is the bonus that we promised. Did you know you can experience world-class skiing less than an hour away from Vancouver? If you're there during winter months, jump on a convenient ski bus from Downtown Vancouver and ski down the slopes at Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain, or Mt Seymour Resort. And if you're willing to ride just a little farther, try one of the best ski resorts in North America - Whistler Blackcomb. You can also explore the mountains during the summer or embark on a hiking adventure and experience breathtaking nature of Vancouver surroundings, like Bowen and Vancouver Islands. We wish you a fantastic trip to Vancouver. submitted by hnqn1611 to TopPersonality [link] [comments] |

History of the Milwaukee Outfit
-Al Capone was a camorrista and an associate of Masseria and Capone had a large scale gambling and bootlegging operation
-Joe Aiello would gamble at Capone's places, but when he would lose, he would have the gambling operation raided and Aiello's men would take much more money than was lost
-Capone was paying protection to Masseria
-A dispute arose between Masseria and Aiello and Masseria than brought Capone in and made him a capodecina and told Capone to kill Aiello
-In 1926 or 1927, there was a "Appalachian type meeting" (Generale assemblea?) in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. The meetings purpose was to make peace in Chicago, but other families attended
-Tough Tony Capesio was one of the shooters in the St. Valentine's day massacre
-Jack Zutta, a Jewish Aiello associate, was murdered by Capone's gang
-The Milwaukee mafia banned people from helping Aiello.
-Sam Aiello, Joe Caminiti, and Migele Mineo were former Aiello members who fled Chicago to join the Milwaukee family
-Sam Aiello wasn't sympathetic about his brother. Sam returned to Chicago later and was in Jim DiGeorge's crew
-Carl Caputa left Chicago and went to Madison where he became boss. Joe "Joe Pizza Pie" Aiello (unspecified relation to the Joe Capone wared with) went with Caputa to Madison
-Milwaukee didn't try to extort any gamblers until Sam Ferrara
-Al Capone was Neopolitan, the next boss was Tony Accardo who was "Thelast Sicilian to be an important boss," Accardo was succeeded by a Neopolotan Sam Giancana (Pretty sure this info is wrong)
-Chicago outfit was a "Money grabbing operation" where only a few leaders profit "at the expense of the general membership" this had an effect on Milwaukee
-Chicago took over Milwaukee in 1952
-Sam Ferrara wanted to have a piece of the Ogden social club which was a gambling place that Frank Balistrieri had a piece on and Balistieri was Son-In-Law to John Alioto. Balistrieri said no to Ferrara and then Ferrara shelved Balistrieri. Milwaukee then asked Chicago to help them with all the trouble.
-A general meeting was held in 1952; Tony Accardo, Rocco Fischetti, and Sam Giancana attended. Sam Ferrara was taken down as boss and replaced by John Alioto
-Alioto reinstated Balistrieri and made him a capodecina
-While Alioto was boss, no gamblers or businessmen were extorted
-John DiTrapani was a capodecina who didn't like Alioto, so he said he would spend $90,000 and even was willing to finance some murders
-One of DiTrapani's friends "Pasternak" lost a lot of money gambling with the outfit and DiTrapani made it known he was very upset
-Furthermore, Alioto heard about Ditrapani's plans to become boss and this sealed DiTrapani's fate
-Chicago were the ones who ordered DiTrapani's murder, not Alioto
-DiTrapani and Frank LaGalbo (a member and DiTrapani associate) were called to a meeting by the Chicago outfit. The meeting was going to be in Milwaukee though.
-LaGalbo warned DiTrapani not to go. LaGabo himself wasn't going to go.
-DiTrapani went anyway and on March 16, 1954 he was murdered. the following day he was found shot in his car
-LaGalbo was very well connected to Chicago and he set up a transfer where he would be in the Chicago family in the decina of Frank LaPorte
-LaPorte was centered in Chicago Heights
-Jack Enea was also apart of the faction that wanted Alioto taken down as boss. he wasn't killed until November, 1954 (Chicago authorized it)
-In January of 1962, Joe Alioto retired and Frank P. Balistrieri took over, Alioto was upset about this. Alioto apparently felt it should've gone to an older man
-furthermore, Alioto was upset that Balistrieri had an affair with his wife's cousin
-Balistrieri began shaking down gamblers and businessmen
-Balistrieri was collecting $500-$600 from Bruno Ramazini and John Volpe who ran the Holiday House
-Despite not collecting from Frank and Jimmy Fazio who ran restaurants, there was an incident where a bomb went off. After this, Balistrieri went to Florida and when he came back he said that they had a piece of Jimmy Fazio's place in Fort Lauderdale
-Balistrieri was not liked by older members because he never consulted with anyone before making decisions and Maniaci even said it would not surprise him if Balistrieri was murdered. Maniaci said if anyone were to kill Balistrieri, it would be the outfit
II. Organization and Leadership -The 1957 Apalachin meeting was due to Albert Anastasia taking forcible action which affected other bosses without telling them.
-Anastasia was killed due to the disappearance of two unnamed men
-John Alioto and Frank Balistrieri were going to go to Apalachin but didnt at the last moment. Also, attendance was not mandatory at Apalachin
-Maniaci didn't know too much about the commission or its structure, but he said it had around 7 members and though he doesn't know if there is a "boss of bosses," if anyone was it would be Giancana (clearly shows his midwest bias)
-Giancana had control over Madison, Rockford, and Springfield
-Balistrieri went to Chicago periodically for meetings with Giancana, Battaglia, or capodecina Felix "Milwaukee Phil" Alderisio. These meeting were at the underboss Sam Battaglia's farm
-occassionally, Balistrieri would meet with Alderisio, Battaglia, and Marshal Caifano in a Milwaukee hotel
-Ralph Capone of Mercer, Wisconsin isn't connected with Milwaukee or Chicago
-At one point, the Pfister hotel manager Marvin Billet made a deal and Kansas City member Sebastian "Buster" Balestrere (who was "imported" to Milwaukee along with Joseph Gurera for the purpose of shaking bookmakers and businessmen down) found out and this led to Balestrere having leverage over Billet. Eventually, the Fox Head Brewery bought a hotel in Jamiaca and Buster made Billet manager. Balistrieri asked Giancana if he wanted to "take over a large gambling casino in the hotel." Billet lost the managorial position and their plan didn't work.
-Balistrieri is involved in the Continental Music Company.
-The chicago outfit may have 500 members (this is wrong as they may not have had 100 at their peak, though it shows how the smaller families saw them)
-Sam Giancana is the boss, Sam "Teets" Battaglia is the underboss, and the following are capodecina: Felix Alderisio, Marshal Caifano, Frank LaPorte, Tony Maccalucci (ph), and Ross Prio
-Ross Prio is a north side leader who was originally in Jim DiGeorge's crew
-Maniaci heard complaints that people are upset in Chicago that only a few are making money. Also, they are upset that Sam Giancana "is too much of a playboy." CI also advised that John Cerone may be Giancana's successor. Cerone is very close to Tony Accardo
-Frank Balistrieri is related to former Kansas City boss James "Big Jim" Balistrieri (It appears his real last name was Balestrere, though his fathers last name was Balistrieri)
-Joseph Cusimano and Joe Jellosa (or Jealouso) are two Kansas City members who have visited Milwaukee in the past
-The Kansas City import Joseph Gurera was said to have killed two politicians (clearly referring to the infamous hit that left Charles Binaggio and Charles Gargotta dead)
-Balistrieri made Gurera a capodecina and Buster Balestrere worked under him. Both members went back to Kansas City in 1963 after pressure was put on Milwaukee for Anthony Biernat's murder
-On April 18, 1964 Peter Balistrieri's (Frank's brother) daughter married Leonard Drewek, a non-Italian. John Molle, Buster Balestrere, and Jim Balestrere (Not made) all went to the wedding
-Peter Balistrieri is a capodecina
-Rockford's boss is Joseph Zummutto, the underboss is Frank Bucemi, and the consigliere is Joseph Zitto. (FNU) Caltegerone is a member who's old and used to be close to Milwaukee capodecina Pasquale Migliaccio. Caltergerone may be a reference to Carl "Charlie Vince" Caltegerone
-Madison, Wisconsin has 10-15 members. The boss is Carl Caputo and Joseph "Joe Pizza Pie" Aiello is a member. Both are wealthy with real estate investments.
-Benny DeSalvo was a capodecina in Madison, but died in February of 1964 at 84 years old. He was buried in Chicago
-The following is the boss succession of Milwaukee: Vito Guardalabene (Nicola Gentile reported Joseph Vallone was the underboss in 1915) Peter Guardalabene (Son of Vito) Joseph "Big Joe" Amato Joseph Vallone (Boss from mid 1920's-mid 1930's) Joseph Gumina was the underboss to Vallone (also says Gumina was capodecina, maybe he controlled a crew along with being consigliere) Charles Zarcone was the consigliere Pasquale Migliaccio was a capodecina Migele Mineo was a capodecina Tom Lucua (ph) was a capodecina Sam Ferrara (Mid 1930's-1952) Joe Gumina was the underboss (again lists him as capo too) Charles Zarcone is listed as consigliere Pasquale Migliaccio was a capodecina Migele Mineo was a capodecina Joseph Caminiti is also a captain (may have been captain under Vallone as well) John Alioto (1952-1962) Joe Gumina was the underboss (again lists him as capo too) Migele Mineo was a capodecina John DiTrapani was a capodecina until his murder in 1954 Pasquale Migliaccio was a capodecina Frank Balistrieri was a capodecina as well Frank Balistrieri (1962-time document was typed) appears he had no underboss Charles Zarcone would be consigliere if Balistrieri had one, Maniaci doesn't know if he actually was though John Alioto was a capodecina and had the older members in his crew Peter Balistrieri was a capodecina "who has active members under his direction" -Older members are displeased with Balistrieri for not consulting any members and making Joseph Gurera (Kansas City) a capodecina instead of a local member
-Older members blame Balistrieri for the publicity LCN is getting due to Anthony Biernat's murder also there's resentment because no one is making money
-Maniaci said he wouldn't be surprised if they killed Balistrieri one day
-On January 4th, 14th, and the 31st Balistrieri held parties at Gallagher's restaurant in an attempt to get the opposite faction to like him. He planned to have another similar meeting a month later. He also assured the members that jobs would soon open up and he gave Vito Aiello, John Aiello, and Maniaci himself jobs at gambling places.
-Balistrieri is very cautious in regards to his personal movements
-Another CI reported the meeting at Gallagher's was to fix the bad feelings between Myron Jennaro and Paul Bogosian who are both associates of the Milwaukee family
-the following is the structure according to Maniaci: capo: boss sottocapo: Italian not Sicilian term for underboss "consuleri": (see previous comment about spelling) the consigliere is the counselor who is usually an older member capodecina: heads a crew, means "head of ten", but members sometimes have 50 members in their crew (or in some cases zero members) No mention of soldiers
-the following are popular terms used by members: Amico Nostro: friend of ours; used by fellow members to indicate someones a member avugad: means lawyer, Maniaci said there's no significance as a term in Milwaukee, but it probably was just not for low level members. Normally the avugad is a representative on the commission. for example, Milwaukee's avugad would've been Chicago's boss cumpare: means godfather; used to show closeness to someone don: Italian term of respect, not a mafia term onorata: means honor, Maniaci said he's never heard the mafia called onorata society which many sources have reported omerta: Maniaci said it's to express any qualities in the word "manly" sagia: "chair, committee of boss, underboss, consuleri [sic], and capodecina [sic] Tourna: general meeting where all members attend; for an important reason
-the following are members of Milwaukee identified by Maniaci: John Aiello: made under Ferrara Vito Aiello: Made under Ferrara John Alioto: Made under Guardalabene, was boss then capodecina Albert Albana: Suspect in Biernat's murder and was made a month after in January 1963 Mike Albano: Runs Angelo's Pizzaria, long time member
III. Membership -John Alioto did not make any members, but Vallone, Ferrara, and Balistrieri did. (which must've happened when the books were closed either suggesting the midwest didn't follow this or he did it on the sly)
-To be made originally, you had to be Sicilian, but they switched it to just be full Italian
-Members don't have to kill, but this has been a rule in the past, to be made
-Associates are proposed by a made member who knows the associates potential. In the past, the name would go around to all members and if they objected, he couldn't be made
-the associate could cooperate with law enforcement to be made
-in the past, all members had to be present at the initiation ceremonies (Maniaci calls them "tourna" meaning a general membership meeting). They no longer do that though
-The Biernat murderers were alleged to be Steve DeSalvo, Dominic Principe, and Albert Albana. DeSalvo contacted Biernat before the killing
-during the making ceremony, both the proposed member and his sponser's fingers are pricked and their blood is mixed. Then everyone present joins hands and a picture of a saint is burned (presumably in the proposed members hand) and the proposed member takes an oath in Italian to put the organization over everything including family and religion
-Members must obey all orders under threat of death
-No members can deal drugs or they will be killed
-Members need permission before engaging in something that may affect another member
-In the past disputes between members were taken before the "Sagia" (This is also called the Seggia, consiglio, or the Sicilian term consignu)
-The "Sagia'' was composed of a boss, underboss, "consuleri", and the capodecina (the term "consuleri" suggests multiple consigliere, but the document has used the singular and plural terms interchangeably. traditionally, the consiglio had multiple consigliere though. Also "capodecina" suggests one captain, which wouldn't really make sense in the context so it can be assumed they mean all capidecina in the family)
-Balistrieri no longer consults anyone except Chicago and only for big issues
-Maniaci named the following as members of the LCN family in Milwaukee (these are just from memory): John Aiello: Made under Ferrara Vito Aiello: Made under Ferrara; John Aiello's brother John Alioto: Made under Vito Guardalabene; capodecina Albert Albana: Made in early 1964, after the murder of Anthony Biernat Mike Albano: Runs Angelo's Pizzaria; long time member Tony Albano: Mike's uncle; retired Frank Balistrieri: boss; made with John DiTrapani; in Joe Ferrara's crew?; Made capodecina under John Alioto Joseph Balistrieri: Frank's dad; longtime member Peter Balistrieri: Frank's brother; capodecina Joseph Caminiti: Secretary treasurer of Local 257; made in Chicago under Joe Aiello; came to Milwaukee during Aiello-Capone war; bootlegger during prohibition; capodeinca under Vallone and Ferrara; Balistrieri's closest confidant even closer to Frank than Peter; Married to John Alioto's daughter Harry DeAngelo: Ferrara didn't like him; made in 1963; works sanitation or garbage department; 55 years old Carl Di Maggio: long time soldier Salvatore DiMaggio: Carlo's son; burglar eith extesnive record; made under Ferrara Benny DeSalvo: Made in 1963; nephew of old Madison boss Benny DeSalvo who died in 1964; lived in New York for a while but moved back to Milwaukee and went into construction Steve DeSalvo: Close to Balistrieri; primary suspect in Biernat murder; made one month after the murder Sam Ferrara: former boss; operates liquor store; inactive Joseph Gumina; underboss and capodecina under Vallone, Ferrara, and Alioto; he was a boxer after coming to America; bootlegger and then worked at A.O. Maniaci also listed the following as members affiliated with other families that live in Milwaukee: Frank LaGalbo: runs Chico's restaurant; was supposed to be killed along with DiTrapani; transfered to Chicago under Frank LaPorte John DiBella: member from Italy; close to Joe Bonanno; head of Grande Cheese Company Ralph "bottles" Capone: Chicago member; no importance in the underworld James DiGeorge: operates stock farm; owns land in Adams county, Wisconsin; former capodecina of North Chicago; years ago he was supposed to be killed, but got a pass; lives in exile in Wisconsin (likely shelved)
-Maniaci said that even your immidiate family may not know your made and it's typical for people to keep their sons out of the mafia
Maniaci named the following as people not members of Milwaukee, but closely associated with Milwaukee: Walter "Walter Blackie" Brocca: worked forvarious businesses on behalf of Frank Balistrieri Tony Bruno: No member of Bruno's family has ever been a member Sam Cefalu: gambler; lives at 1606 North Jackson; employed by Balistrieri Sam Cefalu: lives at 3461 North Cramer; not related to the other Sam Cefalu; worked for Balistrieri in a gambling office Anthony "Sheriff Cefalu" Cefalu: Brother of Sam (doesnt say which one); employed as gambler Gus Chiaverotti: Working for Frank Balistrieri in Continental Music Co.; closely associates with Balistrieri Sam DaQuista: No other DaQuista family member has been connected Joe Dentice: No Dentice has been a member Dominic Frinzi: Lawyer for Milwaukee mafia Nick Fugarino: closely associates with LCN Ted Gagliano: Gambler Nick Gentile (Doesnt specify if its Nicola Gentile, the one who wrote a book): not a member, but associates with LCN Joseph Guarniere: not a member Dr. Vito Guardalabene: Son of former boss Pete; no living Guardalabene is a member of mafia Danny Lampone: No Lampones are made Tony LaRosa: associated with LCN, not member Sam Librizzi: Gambling LCN associate Tony and Tom Machi: gamblers John Mandella: not a member Vincent Mercurio: not a member John Percurio: creditor to Frank Balistrieri who he's related to Tom Piscitello: not a member John and Joe Piscuine: Gamblers; no Piscuine's have been members Bruno Ramazini: former operator of Holiday House Frank "Big foot Hogan" Sansone: gambler; runs a restaurant Joe Sardino: no other Sardino's are connected with LCN Tom Sorce: Gambler Frank Stelloh: Close to Frank Balistrieri and Steve DeSalvo; non Italian, so couldn't be made Nick Tarantino: "very close" and trusted by Frank Balistrieri; couldn't be made because he helped police in a burglary investigation, this was well known to LCN John Triliegi: LCN associate Sam Vermiglio: former head of a counterfeit cigarette stamp ring; deals drugs; murdered John Volpe: runs the Holiday house
-An informant, possibly Maniaci, advised in 1964 tht Frank Balistrieri has a share in William Covelli's gambling operation (CI doesnt say, but Covelli may have been made)
-Aforementioned informant said Balistrieri also has a share in John Rizzo's bookmaking operation. Al Albana is the one who brings the money from Rizzo and Covelli to Balistrieri
-Both Maniaci and another CI reported that Balistrieri, Rizzo, and Covelli thought about buting a Key Club in Park City, Illinois. Maniaci said that if Balistrieri was serious, he would have to talk to Chicago first since its their terretory
-On April 5, 1964 CI (aforementioned informant, probably not Maniaci) advised that he expected Buster Balestrere and Joe Gurera were expected to come back to Milwaukee before June of 1964. They are coming back to act as hosts in a big crap game. Nick Tarantino would be a treasurer in the game. Frank Balistrieri will own the game and Buster Balestrere will be pit boss and host. The reasoning for starting the game was it would make a lot of money and wouldn't violate a federal law.
-Sam Cefalu and Sam Librizzi run a gambling office recieving a line from out of state, this is the only out of state line. Sam Dentice is a runner for the operation. Anthony "Sheriff Cefalu" Cefalu used to be involved, but is inactive
-a CI advised that 70% of gamblers are represented by Dominic Frinzi. Frinzi has represented Anthony Cefalu, Charles Piscuine, Robert Pick, William Cole, Steve Halmo, and Harvey Wach
-A CI advised on March 7, 1964 members of "Chicago and Miami outfits" (maybe meaning Tampa) were trying to build a motel in the bahamas. Balistrieri was going to have a 5% interest in it
-A different CI advised that Giancana was interested in a casino at Cat Cay in the Bahamas.
-Ben Novac owned the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami and was a close associate of Chicago and New York LCN. He applied for a license to operate a casino in the Bahamas in April of 1964 and was denied due to his financial ties to gangsters
-a CI (probably Maniaci) reported on April 3, 1964 that Balistrieri and former capodecina, but current soldier Joe Caminiti had a meeting where they discussed the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD). Balistrieri said he helped get cheif of police Harold Breter into office. Blaistrieri said he felt the MPD was trying to put heat on him by arresting young people who frequented Gallagher's restaurant and they surveilled LCN members. Balistrieri met with inspector Kremsreiter who was the number 3 man in the MPD. Kremsreiter and Balistrieri met at Fazio's and had lunch. At lunch, Balistrieri suggested that the MPD should stay away from his kind and that there are not enough police to be just focusing on him. Balistrieri told Caminiti that he was happy with how it went.
-Frank Ranney is a secretary-treasurer of Teamsters local 200 and is very close to Balistrieri even working together at Atomic Industries, a bubble gum company
-An informant advised on March 24, 1964 that Balistrieri, Frank Ranney, and Joe Caminiti met at Fazio's. The informant said Balistrieri had "some form of domination over Ranney"
-One CI stated that Balistrieri is connected to Jimmy Hoffa and could get a multi-million dollar loan to build a motel in Milwaukee.
-Tony Volpe is connected with Chicago and has access to the money from the welfare and pension fund of the teamster union in Chicago and that many Las Vegas casinos have been financed with the money.
-On April 3, 1964, a CI (or wiretap) reported that Joe Caminiti and Frank Balistrieri had a meeting where they discussed "the disposition of money supplied by the Teamsters to Frank Balistrieri for distribution to some of the candidates for Alderman in the City of Milwaukee." Caminiti told Balistrieri he'll advise the candidates that they are backed by the teamsters.
-During the same meeting Caminiti insuled Robert Kennedy saying he operated a gestapo. They also talked about a speech Congressman Alvin O'Konski gave talking good about Jimmy Hoffa. The Teamsters gave money to O'Konski and Senator Morse (ph) for political purposes
-Caminiti said Robert Kennedy infringes on civil liberties, this was after O'Konski told him about an investigation coming by the DOJ
-Caminiti also said that the Teamsters had trouble getting the poney to pay for Jimmy Hoffa's legal expenses. Out of 35 locals in Wisconsin, 20 wouldn't pass anything in support of paying. Because of this, they decided they would take the money out of the joint counsil, meaning every member will pay .05-.10 cents
-Joe Caminiti told Frank Balistrieri that Frank Ranney said to be careful giving money to Alderman Allen L. Calhoun. This was due to when Calhoun once moved districts, he came into conflict with Al Hass who was close to the Milwaukee LCN. Balistrieri already knew and met with Calhoun and told him that Hass is who they're most loyal too, but they will support whoever won. Balistrieri gave cash to Calhoun as an unreported donation
-Balistrieri gave a donation to Art Else, who's opponent was Henry Maier. Balistrieri gave Else the donation at Gallagher's restaurant.
-Angelo Provinzano was a member of the city service commission who was mobbed up. Balistrieri gave money to Provinzano who then donated money to mob backed candidates. Provinzano donated $995 to mayor Henry Maier. Provinzano also was used in the past to get Italians in positions in the city government and police department. Informant said Provinzano wasn't made
-On April 17, 1964, Dominic Frinzi (mob attorney) was going to run for governor and the mafia backed him. Frinzi himself wasn't confident he could win, but it would give him publicity which he could later use to become a judge
-Anthony Biernat was found buried in a cellar of an abandoned farm sprinkled with lime, but it wasn't the right kind which would disintegrate a body
-Frank Balistrieri partly owns The Pitch Specialty Co. Balistrieri's relative Peter Picciuro operated the business. His father John Picciuro also has a piece or co-owns it.
-Carl Dentice has a jukebox operation in his name for Frank Balistrieri
-Sam Dentice got a jukebox license under his name for Balistrieri
-Peter Sciotino's bakery was targeted in a bombing because of Balistrieri's shakedown campaign. Sciortino was personally connected to Joe Bonanno in some way and ended up not having to pay. Sciortino himself wasn't a LCN member
-Balistrieri's shakedown campaign began in the summer of 1962 with Joseph Gurera and Buster Balestrere shaking businessmen and gamblers down. Some people did resist so Balistrieri wanted to send a message. They were going to kill either Bill Cole or Bobby Pick, but when LE found out they stopped trying.
-An informant though Tony LaRosa might be killed because it was said the Milwaukee family heard he gave information to LE
-In may of 1964, an informant said that Steve DeSalvo and Frank Stelloh now operated as musclemen for Balistrieri. They even planned to murder someone who the informant didn't know.
-The informant thought the murder target may have been Izzy Tocco who was a booker for Sam Cefalu and got in trouble, but the informant thought that this would be too little a reason to murder someone
-A different informant supplied information suggesting the murder target may be Joe Beck. Beck was making complaints against the Continental Sales Co. Balistrieri made comments to the acting manager Gus Chiaverotti where he expressed his anger against Beck.
-An informant advised on April 10, 1964 that he heard a story about a Milwaukee gangster being offered $5,000 by the Chicago LCN "to make a hit" on a prominent businessman who was made. The reasoning was because the man owed the Chicago family between $18,000-$20,000. The man either stole the money or bet and lost the outfit's money

2023.06.06 01:51 JeliPuff The Puzzling Disappearance of Karen Louise Wilson
This case has already been covered, but I felt the write-up was a bit bareboned and could’ve gone further in depth. That write-up was around 500 words, my one has over 1800 words. I have linked their original reddit post, and I recommend you check it out, as they covered this case first.
https://www.reddit.com/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/dipz9h/karen_louise_wilson_missing_from_albany_ny_since/ Karen Louise Wilson was born on February 10th, 1963, to Taylor and Jennie Wilson. She was a popular student in high school and a cheer leader. She was then a full-time senior political science major at the State University of New York and an unpaid, full-time intern for state Assemblyman Samuel Coleman. She aspired to have a career in the foreign service.
On Wednesday the 27th of March 1985, the 22 year old vanished without a trace.
THE TIMELINE: On the 27th, Karen went to the Colonie Center and bought a red t-shirt and a blue t-shirt to take with her on an upcoming spring break trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She may have also gotten a tan at the Tanning Hut; she had booked an appointment that day but no one at the tanning salon could remember seeing her.
She was last seen in the 1600 block of Central Avenue in Colonie, New York at approximately 7:20 pm. She also called her roommate around this time, and said she was on her way home for dinner.
It was initially believed that Karen got on a bus near the Butcher Block restaurant on Central Avenue and took it to Fuller Avenue, but it was later determined that she couldn’t have gotten on the bus and probably walked instead. 3 credible witnesses would later tell authorities that they had seen her on Fuller Avenue shortly afterwards.
THE LAST 3 SIGHTINGS: SIGHTING 1: The first witness told authorities that she saw Karen traveling southbound on Fuller Rd after she turned from Central Ave at 8:15pm.
She stated that as she approached a gas station on her left (believed to be the
Workingman’s Friend Gas Station), she passed a very slow-moving vehicle, also traveling southbound. She could not recall any specifics of the vehicle's description, except that the driver was a white male in his forties with an intent look on his face. The male had a beard, brown hair with a reddish tint, and a long nose and face.
The witness then saw a female believed to be Karen, walking near a guide rail along the west side of Fuller Road near Sysco Food. By the time the witness reached Fuller Rd at Railroad Ave, she had already driven past the female.
SIGHTING 2: The second witness saw someone they believed to be Karen on the west side of Fuller Road. This was between 8:10pm - 8:15pm.
She stated that the female was walking south of the entrance of Six Mile Waterworks (also known as Rensselaer Lake) near the construction road leading west off Fuller Road. This area is located just north of the I-90 underpass. The female was walking on the grassy portion of the sidewalk, with her head down.
A smaller person of unknown sex was walking along the female’s right side "almost shoulder to shoulder" seemingly urging her up an embankment or incline into the Six Mile area. The smaller person was described as between 5'5 - 5'8 (165-172cm), and between 120-140lbs (54-64kg). When the female turned her head to the left, the witness thought she appeared nervous.
The witness also described a white male following 50 to 100 feet behind the two subjects. He was walking at a steady pace, not seeming to be gaining on the two. He was described as about 5'11 (180cm) with a slim build, in his early 20's, wearing dark pants and a waist length jacket which may have been beige. He had light colored hair (gold to red), and a beard or some other type of facial hair. The couple then returned to the sidewalk and began walking in a normal manner southbound on Fuller Road.
After the witness stopped at the red light at the I-90 ramp, and then continued southbound, she saw the couple past the dirt construction road on the right, just out from the I90 underpass.
She also stated that she saw a stopped or disabled small unoccupied black vehicle at Fuller Rd at Washington Ave Ext. The vehicle had a New York plate bearing partial plate 239 with unknown letters. The car was sedan style and believed to be about five years old. The driver's window was down about 6" and the passenger window was down about 2". She thought this was odd because it looked like it was about to rain. Also noted on the driver's side window was a hole about ¼" in diameter with cracks radiating from it. She thought that it looked like a bullet hole.
SIGHTING 3: The last sighting of Karen was by a third witness at approximately 8:20pm as he left work at the SUNY Albany Campus, and was waiting at the traffic light on Washington Ave and Fuller Rd.
He was waiting for traffic to clear so that he could turn right, proceed north on Fuller Rd and access the I-90 entrance ramp across from the Six Mile entrance. The female was reportedly seen standing on the northwest corner of Fuller Road for about 10 seconds while the witness was waiting for the traffic to clear. He believed that the female appeared to be waiting for the traffic light to change.
When he made the right turn onto Fuller Rd, the witness saw a male crossing Fuller Rd from the west side to the east side, just south of the I-90 underpass. He took a few steps up the driveway where the construction trailers were on the east side of Fuller but seemed to change his mind. He then walked south on the east side of Fuller Rd. The male subject did not appear to be looking towards Karen.
He was described as a white male with "sandy or light brown, messy or curly" hair, with a couple of days growth of facial hair. He was of average height, about 18 - 25 years old, and was wearing a jean (denim?) or aviator type jacket, jeans, a flannel shirt, and high tan construction boots.
As the witness turned right onto the I-90 ramp, he saw a lime green Volkswagen Rabbit (estimated to be a 1981 or 1982) parked along the road. There was no one around the vehicle. This appears to have been the last sighting of her, and she hasn’t been heard from since.
Due to these witness accounts, authorities believe Karen likely walked south on Fuller Avenue towards State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany. They concluded she was likely abducted somewhere near Six-mile Waterworks, the entrance ramp to Interstate 90 westbound and the Northway. The night was not well lit, and the road was not heavily traveled, making it possible for someone to pull her into a vehicle within a matter of seconds without leaving witnesses.
DESCRIPTIONS & BELONGINGS: Karen was a Caucasian female listed at 5’3 (160cm) and 114lbs (51kg) with brown hair and brown eyes.
Investigators were unable to locate the personal belongings she had with her when she disappeared. These included: A gray cloth notebook, a blue nylon wallet with a Velcro closure, a green and white plastic bag from Ups N Down, and possibly a blue knapsack containing a yellow dress.
She was wearing a Cream-colored raincoat, a light blue short-sleeve pullover, faded blue Levi jeans and white sneakers. She also had a 14k gold ring, size 5 ½, with a turquoise zircon in raised setting along with 1/5 carat diamond on each side, a Seiko watch with a black face and gold numerals and white plastic earrings. The ring was approximately 40-50 years old.
Her dental records are available.
SUSPECTS: 1. A strange man was seen in the area around the time Karen vanished. He has never been identified and authorities have sought him for questioning, at least as a witness or possibly even a suspect.
2. Authorities announced that another suspect in the case was killed in an accidental house fire in 2013. He was never able to be conclusively linked to the case, and it’s thought he couldn’t be the perpetrator as he had reported to work at 4:00am, just a few hours after Karen vanished.
(On a personal note, this conclusion makes little sense to me. Karen’s last confirmed sighting was at around 7:20 pm, leaving nearly 9 hours in between her last known sighting and the time he clocked in to work. The last witness reported seeing her at 8:20pm which still leaves slightly under 8 hours.) 3. Authorities investigated the possibility that convicted murderer and suspected child-serial killer Lewis Lent Jr may have been involved in Karen's disappearance, but determined it was unlikely since Lent's previous victims were all children. He has not been ruled out.
THEORIES: 1. Police did investigate the possibility that Karen traveled to Florida after her disappearance as she had planned but found no evidence that she had ever left New York.
2. Her case has possible links to Suzanne Lyall’s abduction. Both were young, dark haired SUNY students abducted in the same manner. Authorities have investigated a possible link between the two. Both cases are unsolved.
The general consensus is that Karen was abducted and murdered.
PERSONAL THEORIES: 1. Due to Unresolved Mysteries not letting me add photos to this write-up I am unable to provide a sketch of the strange man seen in the area at the time. However, he has an uncanny resemblance to convicted serial killer John Bittrolff. It might be possible he is linked to the case, but this is simply an observation.
2. 2 young women were found murdered and floating in the river close to where Karen disappeared at the same time she vanished. It might be possible that the cases were linked.
CONCLUSION: During the first year after her disappearance, Karen's family, who now live out-of-state, mailed thousands of letters pleading for information and advertising their $10,000 reward for new details about her disappearance. They have now given up hope of their daughter coming back alive, and simply want to find her body, so they can give her a proper burial and finally know what happened to their daughter.
I don’t have much hope of a conclusion for this case any time soon. It seems clear she was abducted and murdered, and without a body there is no evidence that could lead to anything. Unless her body is found, or someone comes forward, I see this case being unsolved for years to come.
Karen Louise Wilson has been missing for 38 years. If she is still alive, she would be 60 years old.
If you have any information about Karen's disappearance, please contact New York State Police at 518-783-3212.

I was busted by the light police. They had a point, Dana Milbank of the Washington Post. Dana Milbank purchased a home in,
soon to be not, rural Virginia. At night he kept the formerly vacant property lit to the degree that spurned one commentator to call it “spaceship lighting.”
Milbank recaps being visited by the “light police,” a group of concerned citizens who help educate neighbors and instill a sense of pride in the brilliance of their starry night skies.
At first, he was taken aback, but later, not only did he appreciate their efforts, but he also converted his blinding always on, white light flood lights to warm 2700 Kelvin motion sensing lights.
Per Ruskin Hartley, executive director of the International Dark Sky Association, “for 4.5 billion years there was no artificial light at night. It’s really only in the last five human generations that we transformed that. It’s one of the most profound transformations of our environment.”
Many of you may recall an earlier story, way back in our Hormone of Darkness episode, showcasing concerns by local residents prior to a 760 house (now 761) plus town center development moving into the Culpepper County, VA area. Per the
Rappahannock News, this development features “a resort style swimming pool, clubhouse, tot lot, and multiple sports fields and sports courts, all connected by a network of biking and walking trails.”
The forgotten medieval habit of ‘two sleeps’ by Zaria Gorvett of the BBC. Gorvett opened my eyes to something I never knew about, the medieval custom of two sleeps. For those of you unaware, two sleeps are exactly what it sounds like.
Folks would partake in a communal nap, complete with rigid sleeping arrangement conventions, between 9 – 11pm, then awaken for a few hours to do everything from hang out to brew beer! In fact, the idea of multiple sleeps crossed cultures and was found in places as far from Europe as indigenous South America.
How can one’s circadian rhythm make sense of all of this?!
Well, for starters, until the invention of the alarm clock, which humorously was invented by a clocks salesman so he could wake up and sell more clocks, people had no firm way to wake up at a consistent time. The industrial revolution enforced a new circadian standard.
And there’s some science behind this! In the 1992 study,
In Short Photoperiods, human sleep is biphasic, researcher Thomas Wehr found that after four weeks of 10 hour days, his subjects began to engage in this two sleep cycle, involving a one to three hour period for which they became awake and engaged in between.
Want to Learn About Light Pollution? There’s a mini-course for that!, Jennifer Sensiba of Clean Technica. Quoting Sensiba, “As I got older, I traveled a lot more and saw the problem more for what it is. Not only did I see that in many places there is no refuge from it, but I also saw that it was slowly growing worse. Places that had been dark 30 years ago had more and more light creeping upon the horizon.”
If you’re interested in learning more, or more importantly, know someone who might benefit from learning more, Sensiba links up to an International Dark Sky Mini-Course on light pollution, call it Light Pollution 101!
There’s a Play Date at the National Museum of Natural History: Lights Out exhibit! But unfortunately, by the time you listen to this, and hell, by the time we talk about this, it has passed.
Ann Arbor named best place for sunrises, sunsets in Michigan. Sarah Parlette for Click on Detroit. Evidently gambling websites have decided to honor April’s International Dark Sky week in a strange new content marketing campaign, which was to rank the best places in each state to see sunrises and sunsets. My favorite one, “Ann Arbor named best place for sunrises, sunsets in Michigan,” comes from Click on Detroit, whereby a quote “study” examined Michigan’s most populated cities.”
According to
Click on Detroit, “to celebrate International
Astrology Day on Saturday, staff at Great Lake Stakes, a Michigan online gambling news site, looked at light pollution in the five most populated cities around the Mitten state to determine which offers the best views every morning and evening.”
Star bathing is the new outdoor travel trend we should all be trying for Summer 2023, according to Amy Beecham at Stylist. Evidently, as an attempt to destress and promote mindfulness, romanticism about sleeping under the stars has birthed a 70% increase in searches for the term ‘star bathing’ on Hipcamp. And to be sure, “Hipcamp recommends checking a stargazing calendar which outlines major
astrological events – like supermoons, pink moons, and star showers.”
“Industry Must Face an Inconvenient Truth — Most LED Lights at Night are Unhealthy” Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, a circadian clock expert, recently published an article in LEDs Magazine chastising the lighting industry for not recognizing and reigning in the negative externalities of its products. Per the piece, such effects are, obesity, diabetes, depression, cancer, and more.
He cites three categories of industry responses, making the correlation that long term Denial or outright Ignorance of the Facts, may result in “asbestos-scale liabilities or draconian regulations.”
Per the piece, a recent survey by the Circadian Light Research Center of 2,697 peer reviewed scientific articles confirmed that human circadian clocks are highly sensitive to blue wavelengths, and that exposure to such wavelengths leads to major health disorders.
Moore-Ede calls for the industry to harvest the “commercial opportunity” to greatly limit future liability by creating and managing its own standards for circadian modulated lighting.
Unpacking the Wallpack, by Dan Weissman in LD+A Magazine. Weissman, who recently purchased a telescope for his family in Cambridge, MA, discovered that the scope could only afford him views of some solar system objects and a few brightly burning stars.
The ire of Weissman’s pen takes the shape of a rectangular fixtures, be it box like or simply a panel these days, that typically hang off the side of an exterior wall or above an exterior door. “Devoid of aesthetic value” this light is often put up under the “pretense of security and safety” by “recommended practices and adopted municipal codes.”
Weissman recognizes labels that often accompany, what he calls, “Glare bombs,” including “contractor-select,” “energy efficient,” or “light pollution friendly.”
Further, per an earlier LD+A article, such lighting driven by its extreme contrasts is exceedingly common in minority communities where light is weaponized as a tool of power. It becomes a “device of alienation, creating a zone of control and separation.”
Weissman recognizes that the true reason such fixtures are selected often comes down to cost. He recognizes that it may take equally as much cost to persuade building and homeowners away from such lighting into the realm of more responsible, lower lumen, shielded lighting.
Weissman calls for producers of these glare bombs to be labeled as polluters, putting them in line with fossil fuel manufacturers and PFAS makers.
Songbirds, dusk and clear skies: Scientists explore migratory flights, by Erin Blakemore. Bird migration season is ending here in the Mid-Atlantic. I was lucky enough to catch several Baltimore Orioles and Indigo Buntings last week. Researchers looked at 400 songbirds from 9 major species, “including the yellow-rump warbler, American redstart and Bicknell’s thrush.”
The question they hoped to answer was how are these birds so darn precise in identifying the best time to take off for their nightly migration? Scientists found that 90% of the migrating birds in the study took off within 69 minutes of dusk. A “much narrower takeoff window,” that even shocked the research team!
Per the study, taking off at night is all about maximum flight time. In addition to being able to precisely schedule their take offs,
a feat that every airline I’ve flown with over the past few years has proven inept at, birds also are apparently good meteorologists! They often depart when the atmospheric pressure rises over a day’s span. Other factors also trigger migration, including sex, age, and
celestial cues.
‘Lights Out’ initiative appears to be saving birds from crashing into Philly buildings by Sophia Schmidt. Preliminary results indicate that bird death counts are down 70% at one Market Street tower, since it began its participation in Lights Out. As we spoke about on a previous show, birds utilize the stars to navigate, but city lights can disorient the birds. Combine the lights with reflective or transparent glass, and that spells fatal trouble for our migrating warblers!
Per Keith Russell, a program manager for urban conservation with Audubon Mid-Atlantic, “We’ve lost almost a third of our birds – and [collisions] contributing to that. If we’re going to want to preserve the bird populations here in North America, we have to look at these types of problems. And this is a preventable one.”
The Knoxville, TN Zoo is offering up what they call “Twilight Tours” per WVLT 8. Each event will feature a guide to showcase nocturnal critters.
I did something similar in Singapore years ago. The zoo had very dim lights in the exhibits – and they kept those lights dim as you walked so that you didn’t lose your night vision. It was a very different and, might I say, peaceful experience than the typically chaotic daytime zoo.
Flashlights posing major threat to nesting sea turtles. Fox35 Orlando Apparently, a single flashlight can deter female sea turtles from coming onto a beach and nesting. Florida, as I did not know, is home to 90% of the sea turtle nests across the world, so losing sea turtles can affect the global ecosystem.
One visitor to Cocoa Beach stated, “Just leave them alone. Stand back and look. You don’t need a flashlight.”
Another, “It’s not super surprising because more buildings go up, more technology. As it increases, nature and stuff like that decreases,” said Zoe Jovaag, whose grandfather used to take her on walks to see sea turtles.
Capture the Dark 2023 officially is under way! The International Dark Sky Association opens up its annual photo contest complete with prizes across eight categories and an additional People’s Choice category. Voting begins on July 3rd, entries must be received by June 30th.
City Tests Traffic Light That Only Turns Green for Drivers Who Obey the Speed Limit. Erin Marquis for Jalopnik. And hey, you better not speed in Brossard, Quebec….otherwise you may be waiting around for a while. Brossard is testing out a new traffic light that will stay red until it senses oncoming traffic. However, it will only change to green if the car is going the speed limit.
Per the Jalopnik article, “FRED [the French acronym for “educational traffic calming light] forces fast drivers to stop and gives them a chance to reconsider their life choices.” Such lights are already used in Europe, but this will be the first for the Great White North.
Why the Greatest Threat to Star-Gazing Isn’t Light Pollution, and this comes to us from Dorin Elin Urrutia at Inverse. Elin Urrutia writes, in her compelling piece, that the greatest threat to star-gazing is actually the weather. Citing notable examples of the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia (which burnt down due to bushfires) and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico (which sustained structural damage following the winds of Hurricane Maria).
While the threat of human-caused climate change has presented new challenges, Elin Urrutia references proactive burns that saved Los Angeles’ Mount Wilson Observatory from flames in 2020.
On a similar note, ABC News (the Australian Broadcasting Company, not to be confused with the American Broadcasting Company), brings us “A World Without Darkness Could Be a Reality within a Few Years.” Per Carol Redford of Astrotourism Western Australia, “There are some people in the world now who don’t actually experience darkness anymore. They’re in a city like Beijing, Toyoko, or London. In all those big cities, it’s never dark, it’s always light. During the day of course with the sun, but then during the night with all of the artificial light. They’re not experiencing darkness, and definitely not seeing those beautiful stars…”
In the 66 years since the implementation of the UN Convention on the Peaceful Use of Outerspace, around 11,000 satellites orbit the Earth. But it’s about to get wayyy busier. Driven by innovations that have led to dramatic reductions in costs, over the next ten years, Per attorney Steven Freeland, it’s anticipated that somewhere between 100,000 to 500,000 objects will be sent up. Let me pause on that for a second.
On the travel front, we stay in the land down under, “Aussie region determined to keep its darkness is a stargazer’s dream” by Chantelle Francis of News.com.AU. The town of Swam Reach, population 270, resides in a 3200sq km region of Southern Australia that received its International Dark Sky Reserve status over three years ago. On a scale of darkness between 0 – 22, the River Murray Dark Sky Reserve at Swam Reach, measures in at a whopping 21.9!
Tourism has become a growing business. The reserve hosts numerous telescope pads and offers tours of the night sky. There’s hope that an observatory and/or planetarium may also arrive in due course.
Best smart lights for outdoors in 2023, Brittney Vincent of CBS Essentials. Oh there’s a lot not to love here, but it does fall in line with last month’s ‘Lumens are Coming’ article.
For those of you who feel the need to light your trees, because for some reason they need light at night I guess…I’ll try and pretend it’s not solely for ostentatious and narcissistic reasons.
By the way, does anyone remember when those were negative characteristics? The article features spotlights that can be programmed to over 16 MILLION colors including…lucky for us, ALL shades of white….which you can also do for a 500 lumen flood light set.
And hey, Ring now has solar path lighting. Don’t worry though, the fixtures themselves put out up to 80 lumens of sideways light.
You know, it’s astounding when you look at some of these pictures. The amount of redundant lighting. It honestly makes no sense to me. You have a porch light, which lights up the path. Path lighting, which lights up the path. And, in the one picture, god awful frontward facing flood lights, which also light up the path. How bright do you need these paths!? I digress. But the lumens are indeed coming.
LDS Church will get to light up its Heber Valley Temple after all, but the faith didn’t get everything it wanted, Blake Apgar of the Salt Lake Tribune. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fought hard to rid itself of any nighttime lighting responsibility by pressuring Wasatch County, Utah officials to approve new lighting rules that would enable the church to light a proposed new temple the same way it does for every other temple.
The Church received permission to uplight the temple, enabling an exception to be made in Wasatch’s rather stringent nighttime lighting rulebook. However, the temple will be restricted by the level of lumens it can use, and it must have exterior lighting turned off an hour after sunset or an hour after normal business hours.
Smart Street Lights Market is Expected to Hit USD 14,751.1 million at a 23.4% CAGR by 2030, Market Research Future Press Release The pandemic is officially over, smart street lighting is about to boom. Combine the rush to LED fixtures with the Internet of Things, and expect to see street lights moonlighting as traffic and parking monitors, air quality meters, and more. Not to mention, “it is anticipated that camera-connected smart street lighting will increase road safety by lowering the likelihood of accidents and criminality.”
Texas now has 7 dark sky communities for spectacular star gazing, Sana Ameer, MRT. Let’s cheer on the city of Bee Cave, everyone! Bee Cave joins a growing list of dark sky places already in the Lone Star State, including 2 Dark Sky Sanctuaries, 5 Dark Sky Parks, and 1 Dark Sky Reserve. Nighttime is alive and well in some parts of Texas!
Our Afraid of the Dark article is a bit scary! Hilton Head’s dark roads and pedestrians are deadly combo. What the town is doing about it, Blake Douglas at The Island Packet. Per the article, 9 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities occurred since 2018, with five occurring after dark. Prior to that period, there were 28 recorded deaths from 2000 – 2016, with 20 of them taking place after dark.
In 2018, an 11 year old resident was struck and killed while walking her dog across an intersection one night. Lighting advocates began taking shape in what otherwise is a very conservation focused island. Hilton Head, SC has a limited number of street lights, priding itself on “avoiding light pollution and blending nature with construction.”
Lighting advocates appear to be, at the very least, asking for flashing crosswalk lights on the island to indicate when an individual is crossing.
It should be noted that the article shows a chart of 9 after-dark-deaths since 2014, only two of them occurred at crosswalks. In fact, during the same time frame, 6 additional deaths occurred
at crosswalks during the
daytime.
As a whole, the National Safety Council reports that 74.5% of pedestrian deaths occurred at night, whereby
39.1% took place in lit areas and 35.38% took place in unlit areas.
Bryan Bloch, an auto safety expert, surmises that car companies bear some of the blame – producing cheap or ineffectual headlight fixtures, and drivers themselves, who don’t realize that they need to regularly clean their headlight lenses.
Despite opposition from residents, it appears that Hilton Head will be receiving lights at two new intersections and possibly more depending on engineering studies currently in progress.
Is lighting the key variable here? Is more light going to solve pedestrian deaths?
Our featured research article of the month comes to us from Animal Conservation, “Manipulating spectra of artificial light affects movement patterns of bats along ecological corridors.” Bats are already known to have a wide range of responses to artificial light at night (also known as ALAN). Fast flying species tend to be more opportunistic in the presence of ALAN while slower ones tend to be more light averse. We know that “long wavelengths and reduced intensity” can minimize their environmental effects on bats. It’s not unheard of for bats to travel upwards of “tens of km per night.” Furthermore, bats are very dependent on the landscape and the structures within those landscapes.
Despite the nuances between species, the consensus is that ALAN, especially high intensity ALAN, negatively affects bats. This study attempted to answer what exactly bats do when they encounter ALAN – how do they react depending on different types of ALAN.
The study used three different light fixtures – one green, one red, and one white. The control was devoid of light fixtures. The researchers attempted to ascertain the behavior of bats as they encountered lights adjacent to woody areas. The researchers looked at three different bat groupings based on their foraging-echo location behavior, that being one of open field foraging, forest edge foraging, and narrow space – or more aptly forest foragers.
Researchers found that open and edge foraging bats increased their activity close to white and green lights, and to a lesser extent red lights. However, narrow space bats were more likely to veer away from all colors of lighting. Edge foragers were also less likely to cross a white light.
The positive effects of white and green light on open and edge foraging bats appear to be attributed to the accumulation of insects around light sources containing more blue light.
The nighttime sky over Oahu will be lit up with green lasers in the coming days. Here’s why. Hawaii News Now Before we close up today, do you live in Hawaii? I know I wish I did!
If so, do you recall seeing
green lasers streak across the night sky? Well, the Army Corps of Engineers was using lidar at night to complete a coastal mapping survey.
Why did they survey at night? Specifically, why did they do this between midnight to 5am? Simply b/c the airspace is so busy, that time was the only chance they had to complete the survey. The remaining survey was completed during daytime hours.
