Ive got a 1930's house with original wood trim that is in pretty rough shape, so I've been trying a few ways to refinish and would like some advice.
Some areas have more of a gator texture which evens out with diluted grain alcohol — perhaps a bit too well — and to a lesser extent denatured alcohol. However, this bubble texture will not budge at all, it only removes color. Any recommendations for how to approach this next: sand, strip, something else?

2023.06.01 09:45 iamdgilly ChatGPT Prompt for Creating Midjourney Prompts
Copy and paste the below prompt into ChatGPT. Without modification, the prompt generated will be random with 12 components. You can provide 2 arguments: Length and Context after the /craft command at the end of the prompt to influence the number of components that are generated and the context the prompt is created with. I would recommend doing this in the following format: /craft {Length = 12, Context = food product photoshoot} You can also use the /uncraft command, followed by a prompt, that will try to break down the prompt into base components so you can reuse them to craft a similar prompt.

2023.06.01 05:34 Desolane900 The Gladiator: Chapter 7
Author's Note Hey how goes it
Here's a long one that I should have wrote more for but after passing it through ChatGPT, or whatever subsequent type of AI it was, the results, which aren't posted here, actually gave me some really cool and new ideas that'll come in the next chapter.
Like, super cool things I didn't even consider or think about. So that's awesome.
Expect the usual shenanigans and humanry occurring.
Love you guys and I'm thankful for the people who have been messaging me reminding me that I should keep writing. Sometimes I get a little jaded or just downright depressive thinking about my works of art.
As always, I hope you guys enjoy reading this from the bottom of my heart. I know I say it every chapter but I genuinely do mean it.
Here's the prior one,
Chapter 6 And as always, the next chapter will go here once posted.
End of Author's Note The Gladiator A 'Space is an Ocean' Story Chapter 7 The Unlikely Candidates Something was very wrong about the agent escorting them out of the labyrinthine underbelly of the colosseum.
Xyx had dealt with Systems Authority on multiple occasions. They had augments that curbed their social skills, recorded every action and thought they committed to, and reminded them that the Cewmis were watching.
He'd never met one, of course. Had only heard stories. They ran the Federation and, in turn, the galaxy.
The Xihex'han wondered if this warranted one coming out to That Sand Ball, or if they were going to meet one.
When he got caught on Earth, his crime had been enough that an agent physically apprehended him and escorted him to his own courts, who worked as a liason to the Federation proper.
None of the agents he had ever interacted with were as cocksure as this one.
The reptile adjusted his robes and stepped a bit closer to the human, keeping an eye on the agent in front of them.
"Saul, this agent is.. you could use the term
off.", he started.
"Really? Seems like a cop to me.", the little pale ape replied. "Walks like a cop, purrs like a cop."
"No, I mean, well, maybe
your cops but he is not acting like
our cops.", he glanced down at the man to see if he was catching on. He wasn't.
"Why? He forget to stand for the anthem or something?", the human grinned up at him, "Come on Xyx, you're not your usual zonked out self. Hit that peace pipe you keep hidden on you." The man gestured jokingly toward his robes. "Unless somebody broke it. Did the cop take it?"
The human was lucky he understood the sarcasm dialect of English. He brushed it off and kept as serious a tone as he could muster.
"No, nothing of the sort. Should my behavior not indicate that something is wrong?", he pressed.
"Nah. I think you got involved with the police and you don't wanna be seen as a narc.", the man replied dismissively, stepping over a fallen body. "I don't see you any different and I'm not gonna give you any stitches, so just relax. They're gonna get me home and probably give you a couple bucks for helping. No sweat."
So
that's why Saul was being so carefree about this.
Obviously. How could he have known?
The reptilian stared at him for a long moment before taking another glance at the feline ahead of them, keeping his eyes on the agent as he spoke.
"That is not at all what will happen, Saul of Earth.", he muttered, catching an inquisitive look from the man out of the corner of his eye.
"Remember what I told you? You are a very sturdy little bastard, and a bioweapon on top of that.", the green scaled biped began explaining.
"You would be the equivalent of a rabid tiger covered in anthrax let loose in the streets of New York.", he peered down at the man to see if he was getting through and, thankfully, he was.
"I do not know where you are being taken nor why you are even alive. They don't charge tigers with crimes.", he finished.
"What about the machines inside me? And.. and you can translate. Tell him I'm not gonna hurt anybody.", the man tried, his eyes now glued to the feline as well. Xyx only shook his head.
"Who knows when those black market machines will fail? Or if they truly kill everything coming out of you. Regardless, my point remains.", Xyx ventured, an accusatory shift coming over his demeanor. "His motives are unclear, your fate is unknown, and he is not to be trusted."
"
Off. Right." Saul was mulling over his words with a look of suspicious determination. "What do we do then?", he asked.
Xyx was very glad that he had asked.
"Simply remain amicable until it's time to become human.", he gave the man's shoulder a few reassuring pats.
Ocean of Uncertainty Banzora sounded lovely right about now.
If anyone asked, Lana'kt'ujam couldn't honestly provide an answer that she felt comfortable with being her final decision, but home would have been one of her options.
On one claw, she could be back under the warm oceans of that blue pearl. Enjoying the pristine waters, abundant fresh food, and unimaginably beautiful stonework her people carve with their own claws.
Conducting honest research with state of the art equipment in an effort to bring more uplifted species to the galactic fold beneath the Federation's benevolent eyes.
Her scientific progress doubling as proof that she's making an effort to reclaim her medical practitioner's license and disbar the charges that robbed her of it.
Serene, happy, safe.
She felt the memories of home coating the seafloor in layers of nostalgic catharsis, a mass of soft sponge for her to sink back down into when the need arises On the other claw, this cycle had started off with her stuck inside of the glorified closet she called a clinic.
Fixing the deadbeat criminals, untrustworthy contract fighters, and exotic beasts for an arena she wished would burn down.
Deeply loathing her employer and wishing him nothing but death with his establishment dismantled.
She felt the smoldering coal of disdain from the still-fresh memories, burning the cracked statue of pride containing who she once was But now?
Now, her employer's unburied corpse was pulped on the floor of the embarrassing closet clinic.
She was leaving the dung heap arena falling to shambles with her dung heap responsibilities to the scum that inhabited it.
And one would think nothing could make the day any better?
She felt the coal morphing, growing, becoming a self-righteous fire of empowerment, containing the potential to mend her cracked pride and rebuild the Lana she remembered being She was accompanying a genuine enlightened Amber class primate and his Xihex'han companion that spent years enriched in his culture,
on his home planet.
There was just so much to learn if she could find a moment between all of the sudden violence and minefield of ethical dilemmas to seize the opportunity.
The Amber very clearly wished he weren't a victim of the poking, prodding, or tests conducted on him any time she wasn't relentlessly piecing his burnt pelt back together from the holes and scratches coating it, but she stayed optimistic that he'd warm up to the idea of furthering science eventually.
She felt a bubbling giddiness from anticipation, the dense waters of professionalism keeping them from traveling far or getting in the way Unfortunately for Lana, the 'human' and Xyx were ahead of her, quietly speaking in his belching, gibbering language and didn't seem keen on including her or her scientific interests.
Despite lacking the facilities to replicate it herself, she desperately wanted to learn the language. His Spike was already translating for her, she only needed to understand him. Then proper interviews could happen.
She observed the pair ahead of her and made a few attempts to glean something,
anything, from the interaction.
Obviously they needed some kind of distraction. Maybe they were deciding what to have for dinner once they got out of the arena. Or perhaps Xyx was sharing a secret or traumatic memory of some kind.
Or, the most likely possibility, that she was hopeless in trying to read either of the beings in front of her.
She felt the sharp knife of focus as she tapped into the network to guide her augments, a silk web of attention letting nothing escape scrutiny For starters, the reptile's species were, unfortunately, completely expressionless. To the extent that they appeared to utterly lack the capacity for complex social interaction to an outside observer.
The one, and only, notable exception mentioned by the networks were the regional accents and dialects that any Xihex'han could simply mimic with relative ease after a few conversations.
Otherwise, they were a blank slate to the rest of the galaxy.
To some degree, it was likely being done intentionally to maintain their stoic desert monk facade.
Xyx being no exception to this, fighting and basking were the contractor's only two notable characteristics before the hominid's arrival, and the arena's subsequent upheaval.
Lately, she noticed him beginning to mirror certain motions and mannerisms she'd seen in the human.
Sorting through footage provided a testimony to her observation. Motions they both went through. Practically identical.
Bobbing the shoulders sometimes, shaking the head there, the occasional hand moving around in front of his chest as he spoke.
It was almost as if he was trying to use the familiarity of the language and gestures to comfort or disarm the Amber for some reason.
If only she could cross reference the collected data with the network to find intent.
She felt unease mixing with intrigue, an uncomfortable skin coating her determination She made a few mental notes to review more data and continue her observations of the Xihex'han before her attention switched to the fleshy creature beside him and she started trying to figure him out.
The header of her dissertation would definitely make note of the stocky little primate's deathwish since he was tirelessly trying to get himself killed at every opportunity.
Then there was the glaring, irreparable problem of the Command Spike where an augment should be, jutting from his face and mocking her by only operating one way.
He couldn't even access the aug network, not that she thought he could handle such an information overload, but the poor guy couldn't even put on clothes or send pseudo-telepathic messages.
He must have been so embarrassed.
She felt pity for the creature, a soft fog barely concealing the helpless shame of her inaction, in the heart of the mist was a glowing pile of embers, frustration '
May you be forgotten while you rot in the deeps, Burj.' The only fitting curse for his cruelty that she could think of.
The Banzoran did start to internalize that she had been distracted by her pity and frustration for the ape mixing with her shame for failing to stop the Spike from being implanted.
Lana had forgotten to actually
observe, to find something notable. She knew she still had recordings of everything but the seed of introspection clung to her thoughts, threatening to grow into resentment.
Resentment would jeopardize her chances of making something bigger with what she had here.
She felt her emotional weakness unsettle the seafloor and break embarrassment free from below, the friction and instability trying to weaken the pillars of duty on the foundations of hope Turning the last corner shifted her line of thought, the hall stretching towards the hardlight door leading outside to her future of unemployment.
Sweet, succulent destitution.
Lana could find work elsewhere, and would need to, but she really was
not going to miss working under Burj. She'd take the uncertainty of starvation over another minute under that fool.
The Projush agent stepped right up to the field and the semi-transparent red door collapsed at his command prompt. Rather quickly for such a thick hardlight field as well.
Lana couldn't help but wonder how the primate was going to react to the world outside the pit when he saw it for the first time.
She definitely needed to keep collecting data on the Amber and verified that both her augs, and her drone, were still recording everything. Twice.
She felt the coarse irritation of her emotional slip begin to sink beneath the stones of clinical detachment, large bricks of chance sinking from the waters above to build a tower gleaming with opportunity or just as easily crush her beneath them She already had plenty of footage of his biological reactions to the weapons used against him and his own combatives, which needed work. She was quite excited to deconstruct and file away everything once she had a terminal.
As the door drew closer to her, she could hear the rain outside pelting the crowded streets and made a mental note to get data on the acid's interactions with the primate's skin.
Lana genuinely could
not get any more excited today. There was just too much work to be done.
No more patching up criminals with subpar equipment. No more listening to an insane warlord's bipolar rambling.
Real work!
A future!
Now to either convince the agent to let her have it or take it herself.
She opened a pseudo-telepathic channel to Ash'shis and introduced herself, opening with a bit of amicable rapport.
You Live Like This? The cat dude stepped in front of the large open space leading outside. And just stood there for a second.
Saul was keeping a closer eye on cat cop after his conversation with his gator friend. While he wanted to believe that law enforcement was supposed to do the right thing, there's always a bad apple to ruin the bunch.
This one might be that bad apple if Xyx had good hunches.
The cop stepped outside and the three various people followed him, the crab lady was still taking up the rear. He didn't blame her.
If he could put himself between him and the
off officer, he would.
He stepped outside and squinted at how dark everything was. Nothing at all like the blue cloudy skies inside the colosseum. Not to mention the rain coming down.
He opened his mouth to catch some of the misty drops floating down and immediately regretted his decision, closing his mouth and feeling a bit torn by the taste of vinegar. At least it wasn't the funion balls but he didn't pack any of the water orbs and that would bite him, for sure.
Before he could bring his head down he saw shapes moving across the sky between the skyscrapers around him.
The sight was enough to make him forget about his open wounds stinging from the vinegar rain.
Massive boats of all shapes and sizes floated through the sky. The largest of them could be glimpsed in the gray sky above the towers. Some of the ship's were small enough to fit between the buildings. Others were so small it was just an alien standing on a skateboard clinging to the singular maste in the middle. The tiniest ones were flying just above his head.
He almost thought about throwing a rock.
"Oh wow. There's fuckin boats flying.", he muttered, jostling the lizard beside him with his elbow.
"There sure are. I believe our host wishes for us to continue though." Xyx replied as flat and bored as always, dragging Saul's attention downwards to cat cop.
The agent was standing a few meters away with his hands on his hips. Beside him was a big rhinoceros manatee hybrid that stood on cloven feet. Crab doc was already waiting beside them.
"Is tubby supposed to be the muscle?", he cracked, starting to make his way over to the agents and trying his hardest not to step in any puddles or lumps of wet trash with his bare feet.
He couldn't even fathom how the aliens live in this place with nothing on.
By the time he tip toed his way to the waiting cops, the big manatee thing was walking past him and going inside while the feline fur bro began to lead the way again, the crowded streets parting for him while he had his empty hand raised above his head.
The human figured his arm would get tired eventually.
One thing he noticed about the streets was the silence. There wasn't very much talking going on and the footsteps around him were louder than the chatter or the rain. It was still depressing.
The alleys and thin streets were a maze and the cat cop was vigilant. Not letting the human out of his sight for a second.
Saul didn't mind. He couldn't help looking around at the city and sky. Between releasing his pent up aggression towards blood sport operators, getting free of the traumatic cage, and being greeted by Picasso's crowded Bladerunner city with boats in the sky, he was actually starting to remember where he left his sense of humor.

2023.05.28 20:49 Mortimer_Whimsiwick World Hunger Games: 17th Hunger Games: Finale + Aftermath
Day 2 came to a close along with the betting circuits. As by law, the betting circuits closed the moment ten tributes remained which was brought about by Carnelia’s death. Artemis and Luther revealed the betting statistics. The top three tributes from top to bottom were Mortimer, Cat, and Wolvthorne. Artemis claimed to have taken a gamble and betted on Cat. Luther stuck with his Mortimer vote, uttering his signature catchphrase, “Always vote for the best story”. Their attention was diverted to the victor’s lounge where Candace Freeman (victor of the 4th Hunger Games) drunkenly accused Gill of cheating and then devolving into a rant about how unfair it was that District 1 hadn’t done well in recent years. Bacchus Johnson (victor of the 9th Hunger Games) blamed their district mayor Baron Moriarty for his materialistic viewpoints and encouragement for overindulgence spoiling the district youth rotten. Fabeline Granger (victor of the 15th Hunger Games) chalked it up to Candace being a privileged drama queen before making a snide remark towards her husband, Capital superstar Paris Dinkley. Candace broke a bottle over her head in retaliation. Silas MacIntyre (victor of the 7th Hunger Games) wrapped Candace in a bear hug and threw her out of the room. Fabeline was taken to the infirmary, where she was treated for a gash on her head, receiving four stitches. Back in the commentator’s booth, Artemis was so far deep in the juicy drama that she missed the arena’s great reveal.
After a light breakfast, Mortimer and Cat decided they were ready to push through the brush. They were still feeling woozy from the powerful smell but felt the need to persevere. Cat took the lead and used her sword to cut through the foliage. Mortimer kept the rear and scanned the lake, searching for any approaching tributes. After about ten minutes, Cat cut through the last bush and was mystified by what lay ahead. Mortimer caught up and turned to see the arena’s hidden surprise.
It was a derelict pirate ship nestled on a mound of sand. The ship appeared abandoned and worn down, the cameras spotting holes in the hull. It was also without sails, leaving naked wooden poles. Cat wondered why this would be such a big deal, saying the place looked unsafe. Mortimer agreed and guessed it wasn’t for floating, using the holes and lack of sails as proof. Cat suggested they check it out anyway, guessing this was where the final showdown will take place. He agreed and the two made their way up.
Now that the secret location was found, the gamemakers made preparations for the finale. The alligators were called back, but not soon enough for Peggy (8), who was ripped to shreds and cannon sounding as Mortimer and Cat climbed the ship’s ladder. Head Gamemaker Grimstone’s voice rang throughout the arena. He congratulated the remaining six tributes and instructed them to make their way across the lake for the final showdown. Suddenly, large stones rose from the lake’s depths, all lining up to create a path towards the ship. For those farthest away, a large blue light emanated above the ship. All the remaining tributes rushed towards the ship as fast as they could. Jassy (12) was the first to make it across the lake despite falling off the stone path three times. Andrei (2) and Wolvthorne (7) were both minutes behind her and after grabbing their supplies proceeded onto the stone path. Wolvthorne was following behind a disoriented Andrei and took this opportunity to lodge his axe into his back, fracturing his spine. Andrei roared in pain and anger, but his cries were silenced when he was thrown into the lake. His injury prevented him from staying afloat and his cannon sounded three minutes later. Horace (10) was the last to make it across, feeling weak from the smell.
Mortimer and Cat were already on the poop deck when the announcement happened. They were elated to discover the sulphur smell to not be present anymore and tore off their masks. They hastily surveyed the deck, looking for a hiding place or any sort of useful tool. Cat realized that the entrances into the bowels of the ship were closed off, leaving them stranded out in the open on the deck. Mortimer considered their options and surrendered to their only option: making a stand. The two brandished their weapons and waited by the ladder, waiting for anyone to climb up.
Jassy noticed this and circled around to the other side and found another ladder. Wolvthorne followed suit. Jassy crept up onto the deck and spotted Mortimer and Cat staring down the ship. She notched her last arrow into her bow and aimed carefully. Her accuracy was slightly off when she released, and the arrow landed in Mortimer’s left bicep. He grunted in pain, causing him to drop his trident off the side of the ship. The surprised Cat turned to see Jassy standing there shell shocked over her failed assassination attempt. Cat chased after her around the deck, attempting to swipe at her with her sword. While the two were distracted, Wolvthorne pulled himself up and narrowed his sights on Mortimer. Weaponless, Mortimer nevertheless stood his ground and faced him. Wolvthorne told him he would pay for killing his partner, but he scoffed and reminded him there could only be one winner. An enraged Wolvthorne charged with axe in hand. Mortimer dodged his attack and began to run across the deck. Wolvthorne continued in hot pursuit, with Mortimer continuously evading his attacks. This became a hilarious game of cat and mouse, Artemis flinching every time Wolvthorne’s axe was within an inch of Mortimer’s head.
Meanwhile, Horace (10) finally emerged and noticed the separate fights going on. He decided to go after the girls, seeing the two men as a greater threat. Cat chased Jassy up to the steering wheel and managed to corner her. Jassy begged for her life, even offering to help defeat Wolvthorne. Cat remained unfazed and thrust her sword into her chest, sounding her cannon seconds later. Horace used the distraction to tackle Cat to the ground. He held her down with all his might and tried to wretch the sword out of her hand. She bit down on his hand so hard that blood began to pool. The crowds in Maximus Square were surprised by the power of her jaw. Cat ripped a flap of skin clean off Horace’s hand, drops of blood decorating her face. She regained possession of her sword and swung it back behind her. The blade lodged itself into the side of his head, sounding his cannon instantly. Out of breath, she limped to the railing and saw Mortimer was in trouble. She ran down the stairs to help her ally.
Despite the harrowing battle Cat was enduring, most of the attention was on the game of cat and mouse between Mortimer and Wolvthorne. At the same time Cat was struggling to escape Horace’s weight, one of Wolvthorne’s strikes demolished a wooden support beam that held a small above deck which would’ve led to the captain’s quarters. A particularly large cornerstone of the deck above fell onto Wolvthorne’s head, causing him to stumble back and collide with the ship’s edge. Mortimer used this opportunity to rush him and try pushing him off. Wolvthorne was much bigger than him and barely budged. However, Mortimer was successful in making him drop his axe. Wolvthorne headbutted Mortimer and shoved him to the ground. He attempted to choke him, but Mortimer twisted himself around and wrapped his legs around Wolvthorne’s torso. He used his elbows to push himself over his opponent’s back and pulled on his right arm all the while still keeping his leg grip. Wolvthorne struggled for a moment before wrestling himself free. He put him in a chokehold and slammed his face into the ground. He squeezed as hard as he could while Mortimer tried and failed to struggle. Many viewers in Maximus Square were cheering for Mortimer to fight back, mostly due to their betting money going towards him.
The prayers of the Buccaneers were answered when a sword entered Wolvthorne’s back and exited out his abdomen. Wolvthorne’s grip softened, enabling Mortimer to squeeze himself free. Wolvthorne turned to see Cat standing there with a determined look on her face. With the last bit of his strength, he lunged at Cat and pulled her into the blade protruding from his stomach. Cat let out a gasp as the blade entered her body. The Capital was shocked by the sudden turn of events but not as horrified as Mortimer. He grabbed the handle and looked at Cat. She looked upon him in sorrow and nodded her head. Mortimer unsheathed the sword from both bodies and thrust the blade into Wolvthorne’s brain, sounding his cannon instantly.
Mortimer thanked her for being his ally and a true friend. He quickly surveyed the skies. He leaned forward, brought his mouth to Cat’s ear, and began to whisper. The arena’s concealed microphones couldn’t decipher anything. Cat’s final words were, “Don’t worry. Patient confidentiality.” Her cannon sounded seconds later. Head Gamemaker Grimstone declared Mortimer Beckett of District 4 the victor of the 17th Hunger Games. Mortimer felt immense relief and let himself crumple onto the floor. The retrieval team arrived to pick him up and he came with them without a fight.
Mortimer was airlifted to the Maximus Hospital for medical examination. The arrow wound was stitched together and the cut over his eye received treatment, leaving two tic marks at the 2 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions. He was released two days later and was instructed to take it easy. Minerva escorted him back to the apartment, feeling happy he won. They reunited with Gill Henderson, who congratulated him for his win. While Mortimer admitted he felt grateful to have survived, he couldn’t stop thinking about Cat and how she was more deserving. Gill assured him that she sacrificed herself because she believed in him. He remained unconvinced, so Gill took him on a field trip to the Capital’s Oakley Museum of Art, recently erected by Silas MacIntyre (victor of the 7th Hunger Games) and Candace Freeman (victor of the 4th Hunger Games). It was there he met Phoebe Bentley and the two spent hours at the museum talking. Their intimate conversation helped Mortimer significantly, cheering him up enough to meet Gill at the Dipping Downer’s bar to drink with Bacchus Johnson (victor of the 9th Hunger Games) and Quarry Grounds (victor of the 12th Hunger Games).
The victor’s interview arrived and gathered a decent turnaround. Artemis and Luther wore matching outfits, reminiscent of the clothes swamp tour guides wore before the Dark Days. During the opening monologue, Luther expressed how pleased he was of the recent games giving them powerful personal journeys with the victors. Artemis said that while he was no Ashley Chen (victor of the 13th Hunger Games) or Sherpa Kapoor (victor of the 16th Hunger Games), she greatly enjoyed Mortimer’s performance. Mortimer entered the stage sporting something completely unexpected. His now famous tattoo was visible, but the suit he wore was intricately cut around it. The top half was sky blue while the bottom half was dark blue with wavy patterns making it look almost like the ocean. The funny part was him wearing a cap with a small cartoonish gator's head attached to the front.
Artemis and Luther started off by marveling at his outfit, calling it a revolution in fashion design. Mortimer attributed this to Minerva, the same person who polished the tattoo for the pre games interview. Artemis asked if he would get new tattoos, him saying he is planning on it. The first half of the interview was casual, covering topics of tattoo suggestions, his time at the bar with Bacchus and Quarry, and Minerva’s hard work on his outfit. The games eventually came up in conversation with Mortimer describing it “as if walking in a wet blanket that was also in the sewer”. Luther asked about the alligators and what motivated him to wrestle them. Mortimer tensed up but answered that he was trying to save Pearl. Artemis asked how much of a role she played in his victory. Mortimer credited her for getting the ball rolling in helping him realise to not give up on humanity. He saw her as the little sister he never had and wished he would have thanked her. Luther noted that since she got the ball rolling, it was someone else who broke through to him. Mortimer realised he was talking about Cat. He expressed how he felt she deserved to win more than him and how he chose to not let her sacrifice go to waste. Artemis admitted that while she betted on Cat, she was glad he made it, calling her Golden Victor material. Mortimer appreciated her sentiment. Luther reminded them that he was certainly a Golden Victor, citing his impressive chemistry skills and literally wrestling with an alligator. Him and Artemis dismissed Mortimer from the stage to rapturous applause, calling him “Captain Gator”, which became his victor’s nickname.
Mortimer was invited to some parties in the Capital. Gill accompanied him and stole the spotlight numerous times when requested to do shanties. Mortimer would dance along always with a drink in hand. He returned to District 4 and received a warm welcome from its citizens. He used the stage to openly apologise to those he turned away and for being a hoodlum. His reunion with his girlfriend Meridia was passionate and heartwarming, but not as much as the one with his father. Two weeks later, his request for Edward Beckett to undergo back surgery at the Capital was improved with a letter of recommendation personally penned by Gill. Edward’s damaged spinal disc was replaced with a flexible prosthetic. However, the surgery was a minimal success, removing some of the pain and enabling him to walk only small increments with assistance from a cane. Mortimer felt dejected over this but was humbled when several townsfolk pitched in to craft a wheelchair for him. Mortimer and his father partnered with Gill to start a rehabilitation center to help the injured and disabled workers of District 4 and the Island Bases. He further expanded his knowledge of chemistry and medicine, becoming District 4’s chief doctor. He crafted pain medication from the SHC compound delivered to him by Phoebe Bentley and prescribed them to various members of the district.
Mortimer made right by his promise and mended his relationships. He and Pearl’s father Alexander Riverstone crafted new nonalcoholic drinks, a certain cherry lime drink inspiring the Johnson’s Jazzy Juices future classic: the Beach Blanket. He also patched things up with Meridia’s father, the two often going on fishing trips together. His reputation only grew and grew until he was elected mayor of District 4 by the 31st Hunger Games. Mortimer grew closer to Gill and mentored alongside him until the next D4 victor was crowned. He became good friends with Phoebe Bentley as well, supplying him with chemistry textbooks and new batches of the warmweed’s SHC compound. In honor of Cat, he had Meridia etch a sea green ribbon tattoo, which represented mental health awareness, around the treasure chest. He was also friends with Corpse Beckford (victor of the 10th Hunger Games) who gifted him and Meridia tattoo inks for his birthday. Quarry Grounds (victor of the 12th Hunger Games) was also in Mortimer's good graces after he gifted Edward a special redwood cane with a beautiful marble topper.
Things were complicated when it came to his relationship with Meridia. Initially, they grew much closer, her giving him sea serpent tattoos on both his arms in addition to the ribbon. Unfortunately, five months before next year’s game, the two broke off the relationship. However, after the tumultuous 18th Hunger Games, the two reconciled and married a week before the reaping of the 19th Hunger Games. The two had five kids, naming his first daughter Katherine, after his deceased ally.
Mortimer was one of the four Golden Victors to disappear alongside Vixen Furtherson (victor of the 14th Hunger Games) after Savannah Pickett (victor of the 6th Hunger Games)’s death before the 41st Hunger Games. Days after the 47th Hunger Games, the underground terrorist group The Phoenix Fighters leaked two dossiers days apart. The first revealing reports of many accidents taking place on the military island bases. It also highlighted some cases of peacekeepers overworking and in some cases beating workers. The same dossier also revealed how Edward Beckett’s ‘accident’ was actually caused by the Faroe Island Base’s assistant supervisor Plutarch Manson. Manson was found dead in his Capital apartment three days later, his throat slit.
The second dossier revealed evidence of the reapings being tampered with over the years, whether it’d be names added, taken out, or scrubbed. The second dossier instigated some chaos in the districts, which was hastily subdued by the peacekeepers. Mortimer was never seen again, though there was heavy speculation regarding his possible membership in The Phoenix Fighters. On occasion, Capital navy ships and submarines would be attacked and looted under mysterious circumstances. One survivor named Lemuel Stanton blamed everything on a ‘ghost submarine’, one no one could see on the radar nor in person. A fair pocket of Capital analysts suspected Mortimer but lack of evidence kept his bounty from increasing.

2023.05.27 18:45 IndividualResist2473 Direct Thread a Beretta 92
| So I've seen the question asked here, and I've wondered myself. Does the Beretta 92 need a booster or Neilsen Device with a suppressor. I just picked up my YHM R9 yesterday, it came with a 1/2-28 direct thread, and I ordered a booster for it as well. I also had an assortment of recoil springs in factory 13 lb, 12 lb, 11 lb, 10 lb and 9 lb. So I just got back from the range. With the factory 13 lb spring and the direct thread shooting some Santa Barbara 9MM NATO Surplus ammo it ran 100%. With Maxx Tech 124 gr it ran about 80% and with Federal Syntec 150 gr it wouldn't fire two shots in a row. Had to drop down to a 10 lb recoil spring to get the Maxx Tech to about 90%+ reliability, the Syntec was maybe 10% reliable. I didn't feel like opening another package for a brand new 9lb spring. Put the factory 13 lb spring back in and the booster on the suppressor. The SB NATO ammo was still 100% but it was like standing in front of a sand blaster every time I pulled the trigger. Maxx Tech and Syntec were 100% reliable, the Syntec was really sweet shooting. Was it worth it messing around with the springs? So the answer is maybe, if you have the right combination of ammo and recoil springs. The recoil springs were $6 ea plus some shipping. The booster was $75 with my can from the dealer, Piston was another $30. I had a fun day at the range. When I shoot the SB NATO with the suppressor I'll use the direct thread. Everything else I'll use the booster. https://preview.redd.it/1iucc3lt2g2b1.jpg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68df482491bb385b25bf2b5cfb94e689cd4a7512 submitted by IndividualResist2473 to NFA [link] [comments] |
2023.05.27 18:26 viewless25 Defending the Draft 2023: New York Jets
”Short” recap of the Jets' 2022 Season
The Jets had a noisy offseason in 2022 as they were big spenders in free agency, bringing in CB DJ Reed, TE CJ Uzomah, and OG Laken Tomlinson. The also had 3 first round picks and an early second rounder to give the team one of the youngest roster in the NFL by snaps given. The main headline going into the Jets regular season was, like most NFL teams, centered around the quarterback position. The Jets drafted BYU QB Zach Wilson #2 overall in the 2021 NFL draft. Statistically, Zach's rookie campaign was off to an abysmal start with 4 TDs and 9 picks in his first Five starts before having his midseason interrupted by a knee injury. Zach would return and threw 5 touchdowns and just two picks in his last seven games, playing less dynamically than he had in Tennessee but smarter and safer. Zach went into the 2022 season looking to improve on his 2,334 yards passing, 55.6% completion percentage, 9 passing touchdowns, 4 rushing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions from 2022.
However, Zach would miss September due to a miniscus tear he suffered in the preseason. The Jets started Joe Flacco at the quarterback position for their opening three games; going 1-2 with a
historical comeback win at Cleveland (I didn't have to mention this but it's the most exciting Jets football you'll ever see). After Zach returned, the Jets opened out on a winning streak. However, this had more to do with the star performances of the Jets rookies, namely WR Garrett Wilson, RB Breece Hall, and CB Sauce Gardner. In Denver, the Jets suffered a pyrrhic victory at hands of the Broncos as the team won 16-9, but suffered season ending injuries to OL Alijah Vera-Tucker and Breece Hall. Hindering the offensive line and prematurely ending Hall's OROTY campaign. This altered the course of the Jets' season for the worse. While young stars Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner continued to shine, the team's offense couldn't make up for the loss of Breece Hall as they were forced to look to Zach Wilson to lead the passing offense. Zach Wilson regressed heavily from his already terrible rookie season and as a result of his poor performance
and attitude, was benched. The Jets attempted to salvage their season by looking to Mike White, who almost immediately went out with injury, and then later to Flacco (and at one point, Chris Streveler, fresh out of the CFL). Only two seasons into Wilson's career, he's cemented himself among the greatest draft busts in NFL history and for the sake of playefan morale, is completely unplayable in 2023. He isn't going to be cut until at least August, as there's no financial incentive to give up on him until after next season. The Jets missed out on the playoffs in 2023 for the 12th straight season, the second longest drought in North American sports. The silver lining for the Jets this season is that their roster is still full of young talent across the board, as AVT should be back by the preseason, Breece Hall should be back in the early regular season this year, and Garret Wilson and Sauce Gardner are back for their sophomore seasons after winning Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the year, respectively. The Jets had very little coaching staff/front office turnover from 2022. The main exception is the Jets moved on from young offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur to sign veteran OC and recently fired Denver Broncos' head coach, Nathaniel Hackett. This move was met with middling reception by fans. As many cited him as an underwhelming retread, though there was potentially one
huge upside to signing Hackett and his name is...
After acknowledging his failure in drafting and developing his franchise QB, New York Jets General Manager Joe Douglas, scrambled to find a QB the Jets can compete with during their current window where their most talented players are on rookie deals. Joe Douglas doesn’t have the luxury of trying again with rookie QB roulette as he’s already four years into a rebuild that has yielded zero winning seasons. Many considered his huge failure with Zach Wilson to be a fireable offense, but due to his success in building the rest of the team, Jets owner Woody Johnson publicly voiced his confidence in Joe Douglas and let him have another offseason to try to pull a rabbit out of his hat at the QB position. The Jets were connected to almost every veteran QB that might conceivably be on the market from January to March. Around the time of the NFL Combine, the Jets had their options narrowed down to Tannehil, Cousins, and Aaron Rodgers headlining the group. With Rodgers’ ending his career in Green Bay, he then descended into a
Darkness Retreat. Afterward, Aaron decided to tell Schefter to lose his number and went on the Mcafee show to announce that he had decided to play for the Jets, despite still being on contract with the Packers. After a month and a half of Jets and Packers fans taking to Reddit and Twitter to argue endlessly about
Leverage, the Jets and Packers finally worked out a deal on April 24th, just days before the 2023 NFL Draft. The Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers and a 5th round pick in 2023 in exchange for a 1st round pick swap (Jets go 13 to 15th overall), a 2023 2nd round pick, a 2023 6th round pick, and a 2024 second round pick that can become a 1st if Rodgers plays >65% of snaps in 2023. Many were quick to declare an immediate winner to the trade, though I think with trades like these, you need to see how things play out and what will happen on the conditions before knowing for sure. My knee-jerk reaction to the trade is that it’s an overpay if Rodgers were to retire after 2023, but if he comes back for 2024 like he says he’s going to, then this is fair overall. If Jordan Love doesn’t pan out and the Jets make a Super Bowl over the next two years, people will look back on this trade as a steal for the Jets. Time will tell.
Jets Free Agency
Contrary to popular belief, the Jets did more this offseason than roll out the red carpet for Aaron Rodgers. In free agency, the Jets rolled out the red carpet for all of Aaron Rodger’s favorite teammates. In Free Agency, the Jets brought in:
- WR Mecole Hardman (KC)
- WR Allen Lazard (GB)
- OL Trystan Colon (BAL)
- OL Billy Turner (DEN)
- P Thomas Morestead (MIA)
- C Wes Schweitzer (WAS)
- QB Tim Boyle (DET)
- DT Quinton Jefferson (SEA)
Over half the names on this list have some kind of connection to Aaron Rodgers. Allen Lazard was the biggest swing for the Jets in free agency with $44MM over 4 years. The Jets cut bait by trading Elijah Moore to Cleveland, but are going to keep Corey Davis for the third year of his contract despite disappointing availability and stats by Davis. Lazard has experience in the slot, despite being primarily an outside the numbers receiver. With Moore and Berrios out, the Jets are a little bit heavier on outside receiver and light on slot receiver, so they’ll likely focus on size over shiftiness over the middle. However, bringing in Mecole Hardman brings a lot of the speed over the middle that the team is missing. Outside of WR, the Jets added more depth on the offensive and defensive lines. The main highlight of free agency for Jets fans was, strangely enough, the punter they signed- Thomas Morstead. Morstead punted for the Jets in 2021 filling in for an injured Braden Mann with an average of 48 yards/ punt and 7 punts within the 20. The Jets let Morstead go to let Braden Mann return. Mann was a decent punter for the Jets at best, but was infamous in NY for a shank a game that eventually became too much. The Jets have also worked out with P Matt “Punt God” Araiza, but that’s a can of worms I won’t get into. The Jets also brought back:
- LB Quincy Williams
- K Greg Zuerlin
- DT Solomon Thomas
- RB Ty Johnson
- C Connor McGovern
I have much less to say about these players. Ty Johnson has already been cut, which has been a small controversy due to his surgery that was allegedly recommended by the Jets. But especially after the draft, the Jets have a glut of runningbacks on the roster. I don’t see what the Jets see in Solomon Thomas but HC Robert Saleh really likes him. Greg Zuerlin has been a replacement level kicker for the Jets. Quincy Williams is back, which is mostly interesting as his older brother, Quinnen Williams, is in a contract holdout with the Jets. The number for Quinnen Williams is likely going to look similar to what Dexter Lawrence got from the Giants.
The New York Jets 2023 NFL Draft
Pre-Draft Needs
Positions of Need going into the Draft: OT, FS, DT, RB
The Jets' strength on the defense was on the outsides, both on the passrush with Carl Lawson and Jermaine Johnson coming back and in the pass defense, with Sauce Gardner and DJ Reed returning after being arguably the best CB duo in 2022. The weakness was over the middle in the passing game and between the tackles in the run game. The Jets have Quinnen Williams on the 5th year option looking for a new deal this year and don't have another quality DT to complement him on the interior of their 4-3 front. Jordan Whitehead was disappointing for the Jets last year at SS and Ashtyn Davis hasn't fully panned out at FS.
On the offense, the Jets have fewer holes, but have positions like RB, TE, and WR where they can afford to add more talent. The biggest liabilities for the Jets are on the offensive tackle, where Mekhi Becton is coming back from two whole seasons of injury and Duane Brown is 38 and playing likely his last season of Pro Football.
1st Round (15th Overall) Will McDonald IV, EDGE – Iowa State
Before discussing McDonald as a player, we should discuss the Steelers’ trade with the Patriots at 14th overall. This trade led to a lot of criticism of the trade back with Green Bay for Rodgers as well as Joe Douglas’s composure as a drafter. The main thing we know about Broderick Jones is that the fact that Pittsburgh was interested in trading up for him long before the Rodgers trade. Jones to the Steelers was one of the worst kept secrets of the NFL draft this year and the New England Patriots (while not to pretend that Belichick doesn’t love to screw the Jets over) are notorious for trading back in the first round. I’m not going to assert that the Jets weren’t interested in landing Broderick Jones, I think the people who are skeptical of Douglas’s claim that McDonald was their top target are missing two things: the first is that Robert Saleh is a defensive minded coach who is obsessed with having an excess of edge rushers with good bend. Saleh and Douglas are still on good terms, and I would be very surprised if during the draft Saleh wasn’t pounding the table in Joe Douglas’s ear for Will McDonald. The second is that while Jones was on board, Douglas himself said that
McDonald was his number 1. You can debate if the Jets
should’ve taken Jones if he were available, but he wasn’t and so, the Jets picked McDonald. Will McDonald is a 6’4” 236 lbs Edge rusher from Iowa State University who turns 24 years old June 6th. He was considered a high draft prospect after his 2021 and 2020 seasons where he had 11.5 and 10.5 sacks respectively, but still decided to come back to school in 2022. This, plus the fact that he didn’t begin playing football until he was 17 years old, contribute to Will McDonald IV’s advanced age as a prospect. Some might have called this pick a reach due to his age, but it’s worth noting that McDonald isn’t exactly a “late bloomer” as a player, but rather he has been a competitive pass rusher in the Big 12 since about 2019 and is tied for #1 overall in the Big12’s career sack list. Another reason why Will McDonald IV is an underrated prospect is that many people aren’t familiar with the defense that Iowa St. and how it deflates pass rusher numbers. Iowa State runs something called a
STAR defense, or a 3-3-5 (3 DL, 3LB, 5 DBs). This helped the Cyclones against pass heavy, air raid and/or spread style offenses, but means that a premier pass rusher like Will McDonald will get basically zero help in the box. The traits that scouts fell in love with that made Will McDonald IV a first-round talent were his bend around the edge, his top end speed, and his usage of his hands. The weaknesses that were brought up centered mostly around his smaller size, power, and lack of body of work on run defense. But his overall athleticism and potential to bulk up are the main thing the Jets are banking on as they look develop him going forward. McDonald’s athleticism is so over the top, that he’s
made a hobby of jumping over cars and doing other acrobatics that will keep the Jets management up at night if he keeps it up through his rookie contract.
The main thing to understand when watching McDonald as a prospect is that the Jets are going to play him a lot differently than the Cyclones did. Due to the ISU 3-man front, McDonald was often moved inside if he wasn’t double or triple teamed as a 5 tech. When Robert Saleh called Will McDonald to let him know the Jets were drafting him,
Saleh said “We’re getting you out of that 4i and into that Wide 9”. That meaning, that instead of playing him between the guard and the tackle, they’re going to put him as far out as the o-line is built. I think the Jets will try to get him standing up; even though they typically have four defensive linemen down as I trust Robert Saleh to not pigeonhole a guy to a set role and will just try to set him up to succeed as a pass rusher. The important thing to remember when evaluating McDonald’s upcoming rookie season (or Jermaine Johnson’s rookie season from 2022), is that the Jets have a religious dedication to cycling their defensive linemen in and out regardless of how well or poorly they’re playing. So, for young players like McDonald, Johnson, and Michael Clemons, they’re guaranteed to get a shot, but even if they succeed, they’ll get cycled out. But this does mean that in 2023, we’re guaranteed a chance to see the speed and shiftiness that Will McDonald IV will be bringing to the Jets defense for years to come.
2nd Round, 12th pick (43rd Overall) Joe Tippmann, C – Wisconsin
After the first night of the draft, most were shocked over the Jets’ selection of Will McDonald. And many more in Jets land were disappointed that the team couldn’t find any offensive line help for newly acquired QB, Aaron Rodgers. Fortunately for the Jets on night 2, the board broke their way positively, unlike on night 1. With most of the premier tackles off the board, the Jets then turned their attention interior offensive line. The Jets re-signed Connor McGovern to a 1 year $1.915 million deal after the main rush of free agency subsided and McGovern was unable to find a better deal. McGovern was a serviceable Center for the Jets on his previous 3 year deal, but at 30, the Jets are starting to look for long term options with higher upside. With McGovern making barely backup Center money, the Jets had basically no assets committed to the center position. With every center in the 2023 NFL draft on the board, I don’t think I need to do as much defending of the positional choice for center as I had to do for Edge rusher in the first round. The Jets selected Joe Tippmann with the 12th pick of the 2nd round. The Wisconsin Badger is one of the taller Centers we’ve seen at 6’6” (not including
the mullet) and 313 lbs. However, Tippmann has shown on film that he’s able to get low off the snap off the height and in the later block can leverage his size. He had the highest athleticism score at his position (which is going to be a
consistent theme for the Jets in this draft). He started his last two full seasons at Wisconsin, shining as a run blocker and allowed only on sack and five pressures over 338 pass blocking snaps. His strengths coming out of Wisconsin are his fluid movement and rotation, his high football IQ, and his size. His main weakness is his sense of balance and his high point of contact. Some might have questioned why the Jets chose Tippmann over John Michael-Schmitz and, while I would’ve been happy with either, I personally believe the Jets made the slightly better choice in banking on a player who is younger, bigger, healthier, and possibly has higher upside. The Jets have been looking for the heir apparent to Nick Mangold since he’s retired. While McGovern was a serviceable stop gap for the last three years and will get a chance to compete with Tippmann this summer, I believe this pick is a great chance for the Jets to find a new leader of their offensive line for years to come. The Jets are at their best in their franchise history when they have a Center with leadership, strength, and durability to support the offense.
4th Round, Pick 18 (120th Overall) Carter Warren, OT – Pittsburgh
In 2022, the New York Jets offensive line was a revolving door as the offensive line was decimated by injuries before they even started the regular season. They were able to mitigate these issues for the first few weeks of the season by deploying Alijah Vera-Tucker as a Swiss Army Offensive Lineman, but when he suffered a season ending injury, that had to come to an end. In this offseason, the Jets didn’t add many players who will contend for starting positions at guard or tackle in 2023, but Joe Douglas has made a point to bolster the depth at these positions so they’re better prepared for when Mekhi Becton, who hasn’t played a full game since mid 2020, or the 38 year old Duane Brown get injured.
To prepare for this, the Jets picked New Jersey native Carter Warren in the fourth round out of Pittsburgh. With his 7 foot wingspan, core strength, and leadership experience, Warren has the traits of a prototypical NFL Tackle. Carter Warren’s athleticism graded highly at the combine at the workouts he performed despite not being 100% from his shoulder injury. He fell to the fourth round in the draft as expected due to his season ending injury in 2022 and his overall lack of power and ability to sustain blocks for longer drives. The Jets are looking for Carter Warren to develop into a capable swing tackle or high end backup LT. The team is possibly still banking on Becton serving as the long term starting Left Tackle, but we’ll sort that out when training camp gets here. With veteran Billy Turner on the team and second year Maxx Mitchell returning as a swing tackle, the Jets are hopeful that they won’t rely on a rookie tackle in 2023. But if they do, Carter Warren has the traits needed to keep the offense on schedule when injuries inevitably come.
5th Round Pick, Pick 8 (#143rd Overall) Israel Abanikanda, RB – Pittsburgh
After selecting the Pittsburgh Panther from New Jersey in the fourth round, the Jets elected to take his teammate, RB Israel Abanikanda from Brooklyn, with the very next pick. In the last two years the Jets have brought in a lot of young runningbacks from the draft such as Michael Carter, Breece Hall, and Zonovan Knight. The Jets running back room looked like it was on the road to being elite after Breece Hall’s early career breakout before his tragic season ending injury. Breece Hall had emerged as a physical, downhill runner for the Jets and Michael Carter and Bam Knight were capable change of pace backs, pass blockers, and receiving backs. Breece Hall is going to go back to being the Jets premier runningback if he comes back to be 100% of what he was last year, even with Abanikanda on the roster. But what the Jets were lacking, even with Hall on the roster last year, was a shiftier, higher end speed running back that can break open in space. Hall checks off a lot of these boxes, but did so by being more physical over the middle. In 2022, Izzy Abanikanda’s stats were impressive. He reached 100 yards rushing in 9 out of his 11 games and rushed for 20 TDs on the season. With Hall, Izzy can be a dangerous lightning to Breece Hall’s thunder as the Jets look to round out their offense. Izzy’s athleticism is (say it with me now: ) really good. He ranked 5th out of running backs in this draft despite being a 5th round pick. The biggest weakness commonly cited about Izzy Abanikanda is his pass protection. This has been a recent focus on running backs in the NFL and something that will likely limit Izzy’s day one impact. But the Jets can keep things simple on the offense and just focus on getting the ball of playmakers like Abanikanda. The most exciting thing about Abanikanda is that he’s young, not turning 21 until October 5th of this year (making him born in 2002, if you wanted to feel old today). Abanikanda is an extremely speedy player with home run ability. The value in the 5th round is great for the Jets here and they are now hedged against a key RB injury like they suffered last year. This pick may spell trouble for fans of Michael Carter and Zonovan Knight (apologies to
/DynastyFF), but it puts the Jets in a position to be dynamic in the ground game to capitalize on defenses thinking they can afford to sell out against the Aaron Rodgers-led passing offense.
6th Round, Pick 7 (184th Overall) Zaire Barnes, LB – Western Michigan
Getting later into the draft, the Jets start to look for roleplayers and positions where the team is light. Zaire Barnes fills both of these criteria with his special teams experience and coverage linebacker experience. The Jets have Quincy Williams and CJ Mosely playing in the box to handle secondary running coverage. The team may still bring back Kwon Alexander to return as the WILL linebacker in space, but the Jets are looking to bolster their coverage over the middle. The Jets have arguably the best cornerback duo on the outside with DJ Reed and Sauce Gardner and a capable slot corner with Michael Carter II. This means that most of the teams that threw the ball on the Jets did so over the middle.
At Western Michigan, Barnes lined up close to the line of scrimmage and focused mostly on man coverage. In order for him to unlock his potential and make this pick a steal, he needs to unlock his ability to use lateral movement to help in zone coverage. At 6’1” his height is unremarkable but more than adequate for a linebacker within the box. If Zaire Barnes can make himself valuable on special team and take advantage of the opportunities to make a play in coverage over the middle or to make an impact in the run game where the Jets are also light, Zaire Barnes will be able to be a part of this Jets team for a long time.
Round 6, Pick 27 (#204th Overall) Jarrick Bernard-Converse, DB – LSU
In writing Bernard-Converse’s position on the headliner, I opted to just write DB, as he’s played all over the secondary. Looking at JBC’s skillset and the holes the Jets have in their roster, it would seem Bernard-Converse’s best outlook on the Jets is to move to the Safety position. With good tackling ability, high athleticism, and four years of starting experience at the Power 5 level, the Jets are banking on Bernard-Converse’s ability to adapt to a new role as opposed to being a true CB. In coverage at LSU, he did have some issues letting players get behind him due to his ability to trail and backpedal, another sign that he’s likely better suited for the safety role. With Jarrick Bernard-Converse, the Jets are banking on his adaptability and Robert Saleh’s ability to develop a player with raw talent into a contributor on the backend.
Round 7, Pick 3 (#220th Overall) Zack Kuntz, TE – Old Dominion
The Jets have looked to rebuild their TE room after years of it being in disarray. Unfortunately, the group that Douglas has put together, CJ Uzomah, Tyler Conklin, and Jeremy Ruckert, didn’t quite pan out in 2023. Part of this was on the quarterback play, but part of this is that the tight ends on the Jets didn’t quite have the plus abilities the team needed to get production from their Tight Ends. This is just the beginning of why Zack Kuntz is an exciting pick for the Jets. Kuntz (pronounced KOONTS, unless you’re Australian) was primarily a receiving tight end for Penn State and Old Dominion in college. At 6’8” 255lbs, Kuntz has
more than the prototypical size of a blocking Y tight end, but he instead spent his college career using his 4.55 speed to be a menace over the middle. His most productive season was only 692 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns, which is a bit less for the insane athleticism that a speedy and shifty tight end such as Kuntz possesses. Still, it’s hard to imagine how 32 GMs looked at Kuntz and decided over 200 times that they don’t need this freak of nature on their team. The Jets may look into developing his blocking a bit more, but I think they’re probably more excited by refining his hands and getting him over the middle to create some size mismatch. With Zach Kuntz elite size and speed, he’s truly a menace with the ball in his hands.
UDFA Rapid Fire
The Jets traded back in the 6th round at a pretty heavy loss. I believe this is because they wanted special teams and depth and were relatively satisfied with most of the starters they had going into the NFL draft. So, the Jets will likely not have a ton of contributions from UDFAs this year.
Here are the 13 players the Jets have currently signed as UDFAs and I’ll highlight a few of the ones I think I have a chance at making the 53 man roster below:
- Jason Brownlee, WR Southern Mississippi: Despite receiving a combine invite and showing a good vertical and 40 yard dash, Brownlee ends up unsigned on the Jets. I think the Jets will look to leverage his athleticism on special teams, as most of the WRs on the roster have little experience/interest in playing special teams.
- Trey Dean, Safety Florida: A former starter as a freshman for the Gators in 2017, he’s got a lot of experience. As mentioned earlier, both safety positions are weakspots on the Jets roster, so a safety with Dean’s experience might be able to stick on.
- Deslin Alexandre, DL Pittsburgh: Joe Douglas sure does love his Pittsburgh guys. Deslin played as an edge rusher in college, but went undrafted due to weak bend (which is an important trait in an EDGE rusher, as I’m sure you can imagine). Still, a player with his size could still be a valuable Defensive Tackle in a 4-3 defense such as the Jets’. The main thing for Alexandre will be improving his run defense, as that’s currently a sore spot for the Jets DL.
53 Man Roster Projection

Notes on 53 man roster
- Yes, the front seven is a complete mess. The Jets move guys around so much that even trying to delineate between a LB or a DE can be difficult. This is a rough guesstimation of what players will make the final roster, not necessarily where they’ll play.
- The NFL has a new rule that allows teams to carry 3 QBs and still be under the 53 man roster. So that's why you may count 54 on this.
- I only did this with players currently either on contract or drafted by the Jets. I think Kwon Alexander will eventually sign but for now, he’s not on here.
- I really wanted to find a spot for Zach Kuntz, but it was tough since there’s a lot of dedicated money to TEs. I thought maybe we could cut Randall Cobb, but we’ll see.
Final Thoughts
This offseason will be remembered as the offseason where the Jets made a huge swing for a future Hall of Fame QB. It’s impossible for me to try to put this draft class up against that. But the Jets got a lot of athleticism in this draft that can set them up to be competitive in the long term. It was surprising that they traded
back, seeing as they’re in a win now mode, still. I think the Jets got 2 or 3 starters from this draft, likely some combination of Abanikanda, Tippmann, and McDonald. Certain players like Warren and Kuntz do have some longer term potential, too. Nothing will ever touch Joe Douglas’s 2022 draft class, but I thought this class was solid and built a lot of overdue depth. Still, when July rolls around and it’s time for camp, it’s going to be the QB that all Jets fans are looking at.

2023.05.26 20:24 jimbobbypaul Ranking the Top 131 FBS Programs of the Last 40 Years: 91. Louisiana
Main hub thread with the full 131 rankings I love UL Lafayette. They rebranded as just “Louisiana” in 2017, but growing up I knew them as UL Lafayette. I was weirdly obsessed with 2005-08 starting RB Tyrell Fenroy, who I thought looked cool in the Ragin’ Cajuns uniform. Fenroy ran for 1000+ yards in each of his 4 seasons, only the 7th player in NCAA history to do so. Outside of that, Louisiana’s been a fairly solid Group of 5 team, especially in the 2010s, with their top 6 seasons all coming after 2010.

- 221-247-1 record
- 6 conference titles
- 7-3 bowl record
- 0 consensus All-Americans
- 26 NFL players drafted
Like I alluded to in the intro, Louisiana would be a lot lower without the past decade. They’ve gone 98-57 since 2011, and just 123-190-1 before. 3 conference titles have come in the last decade, 1 in 2005, and 2 Big West titles under coach Nelson Stokley in 1993 and ‘94. Nelson is the dad of Louisiana all-time leading receiver and 15-year NFL veteran WR Brandon Stokley, who won 2 Super Bowls, had a 1000+ yard season with Peyton Manning at QB, and was the recipient of the famous “STOKELY! SIDELINE! TOUCHDOWN! WOW!” call from Gus Johnson on a winning TD in 2009. Stokley’s just one of many notable names to come out of Louisiana since 1983, others including QB Jake Delhomme, CB Charles “Peanut” Tillman, CB Ike Taylor, and RB Elijah Mitchell.
Top 5 Seasons
Worst Season: 1997 (1-10 overall, Independent) Speaking of Nelson Stokley, in addition to winning 2 Big West titles, he had the worst season here. And I tell you what, the bar for failure just seems to keep getting raised for the “worst” teams on this list. UL Lafayette, back then known as Southwestern Louisiana, scored just 16.3 PPG while giving up the nation’s worst 50.3 PPG. It’s somewhat excusable given their first 4 games were against Pitt, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M, but it’s like they didn’t even try, losing 14-59 to Tech and 0-66 to A&M. WR Brandon Stokley did set the Louisiana school record for career receptions in the game against Texas A&M, with 173. The game was personal for A&M—just last year, Louisiana had beaten #25 Texas A&M 29-22 in the second week of the season, sending the Aggies into a tailspin and finishing just 6-6. After Louisiana started 0-5, they got their only win over eventual 2-9 team Arkansas State. They quickly followed it up with a 42-48 OT loss to FCS North Alabama, and lost the rest of their games with the final 3 weeks consisting of 0-56 to Tulane, 7-77 to #16 Washington State and Ryan Leaf, and 24-63 to Louisiana Tech. Nelson Stokley had built up enough good karma to stay for 1998, but was fired after going just 2-9.
5. 2013 (9-4 overall, 5-2 Sun Belt) Most people think of 9/4 as Bo Pelini day for his time at Nebraska, but Mark Hudspeth and UL Lafayette were right there with him. Hudspeth led the Ragin’ Cajuns to 4 straight 9-4 seasons from 2011-14, so this was the 3rd iteration. A lot of talent returned from the 2012 team that finished 2nd in the Sun Belt, so the media picked Lafayette to win their first conference title since ‘05. After an 0-2 start against Arkansas and Kansas State, they locked in for conference play, winning 8 straight to improve to 8-2 with a 5-0 Sun Belt record. For no reason, they lost their last 2 games against 5-6 ULM and 5-6 South Alabama to fall to 8-4 and 5-2 in the Sun Belt, but thankfully on the final day, Arkansas State gave up a TD to Western Kentucky with 10 seconds left to have them fall to 5-2 just like UL Lafayette, and the two teams shared the Sun Belt title. Louisiana won the New Orleans Bowl for the 3rd straight year, 24-21 over Tulane, and they’d win it again next year for the 4th time. Both UL Lafayette RBs Alonzo Harris and Elijah McGuire made 1st Team All-Sun Belt with a combined 2219 yards and 25 TD from scrimmage.
4. 2012 (9-4 overall, 6-2 Sun Belt) According to my algorithm, the 2012 team’s resume was ever so slightly better. A 5-3 UL Lafayette team had mostly beaten the teams they should’ve and lost to the teams they should’ve. They then took a trip down to Gainesville to play #7 Florida, who had one of the top defenses in the country but one of the weaker offenses in the Power 5. As usual, Florida was playing in the sand, down 13-20 with just 2:00 to go. Florida QB Jacoby Brissett fired a 2 yard TD with 1:30 left to tie it, and with just 10 seconds left, Florida blocked a punt and Jelani Jenkins took it back 36 yards for the winning TD. By some Will Muschamp black magic, the Gators had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat no matter how hard they tried to give the game away. Lafayette didn’t let the loss bother them, and finished the regular season on a 3 game win streak. They finished 2nd in the Sun Belt to Arkansas State, who won their 2nd straight title, and would go on to win 3 more over the next 4 years. Louisiana won a 43-34 shootout in the New Orleans Bowl over East Carolina and OC Lincoln Riley.
UL Lafayette kicker Brett Baer finished his career as the NCAA’s all-time leader in FG percentage (minimum 50 attempts) at 90%, going 45/50 over his career and 20/23 in 2012. He’s still #1 to this day. Sophomore QB Terrance Broadway completed 65% of passes for 2847 yards 17 TD 9 INT, and ran for 769 yards and 9 TD on 6.5 YPC, earning 2nd Team All-Sun Belt. Broadway would go on to throw for 7985 yards and rush for 1936 yards in his career, ranking 15th in Sun Belt history in total yards.
3. 2019 (11-3 overall, 7-1 Sun Belt) Now we’ve entered the Billy Napier zone. His final 3 years at Louisiana, 2019-21, all show up here, just slightly out of order with the last 2. 2019 Louisiana had a DANGEROUS run game combined with super efficient passing from QB Levi Lewis, and a very good defense as well. Just a 28-38 loss to Mississippi State on the opening day was a sign of things to come. Louisiana beat up on their early schedule, including a 77-6 wipeout of Texas Southern, racking up 748 yards of offense. A 7-17 loss to Appalachian State was the projected Sun Belt title game coming into the year, and gave us an early taste of where the two teams stood. The two had a date with destiny, as Louisiana rolled through the rest of their schedule to finish 10-2 and face #21 11-1 App State in the title game. App took an early 21-0 lead and the Cajuns had to play catch up the whole time, scoring late TDs to make it a 38-45 result. App State was just a team of destiny that year, going 13-1 and finishing #19 in the nation. UL Lafayette still finished how they usually do—with a bowl win, this time over MAC champion Miami (OH).
This 2019 edition was (arguably) better than the top 2 seasons on this list. The offense averaged 37.9 PPG (10th in the nation) and gave up just 19.7 PPG (18th in the nation). Like I said, the run game was stacked. The offensive line consisted of OT Max Mitchell (4th round NFL pick), OG Robert Hunt (2nd round), OG O’Cyrus Torrence (2nd round) and OG Kevin Dotson (4th round). Starting RB Elijah Mitchell (6th round) ran for 1147 yards and 16 TD on 5.8 YPC, backup Raymond Calais (7th round) ran for 886 yards and 6 TD on 7.6 YPC, and 3rd string Trey Ragas ran for 820 yards and 11 TD on 7.1 YPC. Overall, Louisiana ranked 6th in the nation in rushing YPG, and 3rd in YPC. Pretty unstoppable. Levi Lewis was a great QB for the team as well, taking care of the ball and throwing 3050 yards 26 TD 4 INT.
2. 2021 (13-1 overall, 8-0 Sun Belt) It was getting hard for Louisiana to hold onto Napier, and the 2021 season was the final straw. #23 Louisiana at #21 Texas was one of the more underrated non-conference matchups of the season, with the Longhorns taking it 38-18. Afterwards, Louisiana lived up to their preseason ranking and then some, going on a 13 game win streak that overlapped to next year for a total of 15 games. After losing the conference championship game in 2019 and the game being cancelled in 2020, 3rd time was the charm and UL Lafayette was the sole winner of the 2021 Sun Belt title, beating 10-2 Appalachian State 24-16. Louisiana was never in danger of not making the title game, as the 2nd place team in their division, Texas State, went just 3-5 in the Sun Belt. But the road to the title didn’t come without struggles—close wins were 27-24 over FCS Nicholls State, 20-18 over South Alabama, 28-27 over Arkansas State, 21-17 over Georgia State on a late TD, and 21-16 over rival UL Monroe. Still, they won the title, and won the bowl game to boot, 36-21 over Marshall.
QB Levi Lewis finished his career with a 2917 passing yard 20 TD 4 INT season, totalling 10,291 yards from scrimmage for his career and ranking 10th in Sun Belt history. Lewis also had a record of 34-5(!) over his last 3 years as a starter. A whopping 6 players on offense and 8 on defense were 1st-3rd Team All-Sun Belt. Napier won Sun Belt Coach of the Year for a 2nd time. 4 players from the team have been drafted in the last 2 NFL Drafts, including 2nd round pick OL O’Cyrus Torrence, who transferred to Florida in 2022.
1. 2020 (10-1 overall, 7-1 Sun Belt) And in the 1 spot, we’ve got 2020 Louisiana. The Ragin’ Cajuns made a statement in week 1, beating #23 Iowa State 31-14 thanks to a 95 yard kick return TD and 83 yard punt return TD. Iowa State would go on to win the Fiesta Bowl and finish #9 in the nation, with their only other 2 losses coming to top 10 teams by a combined 4 points. Louisiana gave Iowa State their toughest test all year. After that came wins over (final records) 6-4 Georgia State and 8-5 Georgia Southern. A 27-30 loss on the final play to Coastal Carolina, who finished 11-1, was Louisiana’s only loss all season. A mid-season win over 6-3 UAB and a last week win against 9-3 Appalachian State built a very good resume. Unfortunately, the Sun Belt title game against Coastal Carolina was cancelled, and we were robbed of a potential classic. Even though Coastal had beaten Louisiana earlier in the year, the two shared the Sun Belt title. A 31-24 win over UTSA in the bowl finished off a 10-1 year, and a #15 finish (9th in my rankings).
Louisiana’s numbers weren’t eye popping—just 33.6 PPG to 22.0 PPG allowed. Only 1 player, RB Elijah Mitchell, made 1st Team All-Sun Belt on offense and defense. Most of Louisiana’s success came from key contributors playing as a team, as they dominated the 2nd/3rd all-conference teams with 6 players on offense and 4 on defense. This was the first season Louisiana was ever ranked by the College Football Playoff Committee, and the first time they had beaten Appalachian State (0-8 previously). Chris Smith was an All-American kick returner, averaging 26.8 yards per return with 2 TD.
5th Quarter
How would you rank the 3 best teams between 2019, 2020, and 2021? The 2020 team had 3 less wins than ‘21, but was better in my algorithm. Who’s your favorite all-time player from UL Lafayette? And just how good were the Billy Napier years?

2023.05.23 01:44 KrazZyBR Random opinion: Crocodilo > Kaido
Crocodile was the right villain in the wrong moment
Crocodile foi o vilão certo no momento errado
If Crocodile and Baroque Works appears in New World, commanding Wano and as a menace at New World, while the Beast Pirates in Alabasta (or changing the arcs too, with the whole Punk Hazard/Dressrosa/Wano in Paradise and the Seasons Islands in New World), would be better for the hype.
Luffy would achieve G2 in Alabasta/Wano, G3 in Ennies Lobby and G5 in Wano/Alabasta
Imagine the menace of someone using haki of conqueror and a Logia of sand and drying

2023.05.22 02:35 vicsage83 Defending the Draft 2023: Las Vegas Raiders
Season Review
The first season of the McDaniels-Ziegler brain trust ended in disappointment and a change at quarterback. With the team moving on from Derek Carr there were all sorts of rumors and fan theories for which direction the Raiders would be going. Will they make a swing for a veteran like Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, before the latter's retirement or make a draft day splash for a rookie QB? Or will they just look to tread water and build up the rest of the roster in their preferred image before finding the long term answer? Based on the roster moves it’s clear that leadership believes that last year's bonanza may have been a mistake and that the team needs a better core before long term contention.
Notable Pre-Draft Acquisitions/Extensions/Trades
Signed Jimmy Garoppolo, QB (3 years, $72.5m) - The new quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders joins the franchise after spending the last few years avoiding being fully replaced by Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco. Garoppolo is a base minimum starter who when healthy, which isn’t often, can win games with a good roster. Now, the Raiders don’t really have a good roster so we will see how that goes. The Raiders do have a solid compartment of pass catchers and a great running game so that should help mitigate any pass blocking issues or Garoppolo’s limitations as a passer.
Franchise tagged Josh Jacobs, RB - Josh Jacobs is a good football player and broke out as the top rusher in the NFL after the team declined his 5th year option. There is still talk about a long term deal coming into place but it is also hard to see a Patriots-esque management group splurging on a running back.
Signed Jakobi Meyers, WR (3 years, $33m) - In one of the surprises of free agency the Raiders brought in talented pass catcher Jakobi Meyers from New England. This appears to be the writing on the wall of Hunter Renfrow’s time with the organization but it appears that they will run with the talented trio for at least 2023.
Traded Darren Waller, TE to NYG for 3.100 - Waller has spent the last few years hurt and while talented, he didn’t appear to be a good fit for McDaniels, offensive scheme or personality wise.
Other Signings/Acquisitions
Austin Hooper, TE
OJ Howard, TE
Robert Spillane, LB
Marcus Epps, S
David Long, CB
Duke Shelly, CB
Major Needs Entering Draft
The Raiders entered the 2023 draft with priority needs at every level and position of the defense. The team also needed long term answers at quarterback, tight end, and across the offensive line excluding left tackle.
Las Vegas Raiders 2021 Draft
Round 1 (7th Overall) - Tyree Wilson, EDGE, Texas A&M
Team Fit: The Raiders went into the draft hoping that at least three QBs would be picked ahead of them so one of Will Anderson, Paris Johnson, Tyree Wilson, or Devon Witherspoon would reach them at 7. After the Cardinals traded back up ahead of the Raiders at 6 that left Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson there for the taking. Wilson will likely grow into a starting role with the Raiders as he is currently getting by with his length and athleticism and needs development when it comes to being a more complete pass rusher. Raiders defensive line coach Rob Leonard has a solid track record of developing edge defenders and Wilson has elite traits. Wilson is a detour from the sort of safe picks the Raiders have made in past years. With the proper tutelage and training, the former Red Raider should blossom into Maxx Crosby’s long awaited running mate. Wilson still is recovering from foot surgery and is hopeful to be ready to go to start the year.
Vic Analysis: Wilson is a raw player who currently wins with length, strength, and explosion. That explosion doesn’t usually happen right off the snap though. Whether that is a case of not having a great feel for the snap or just following defensive assignments is something the Raiders will have to figure out. In addition, Wilson’s length is clearly evident on film and in his measurables but his hand usage as a pass rusher and run defender is lacking as well. At 6 '7'' and 270 lbs Wilson has the size to play inside and out, giving the Raiders the option to have their three most dynamic defensive players out on the field.Wilson is likely a rotational player in year 1 that will initially spell Chandler Jones and Maxx Crosby before likely earning a starting role in 2024.
Round 2 (35th Overall) - Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame
Team Fit: After trading away Darren Waller and allowing Foster Moreau to test free agency (before his unfortunate cancer diagnosis) the Raiders had a clear long term need at tight end. The team signed Austin Hooper and OJ Howard to hold the fort down as a worst case scenario in 2023 but with an impressive rookie class it was likely the team would look for a long term starter at the position. As Michal Mayer started to fall in the draft, the Raiders made multiple inquiries to move up into the back half of round 1 before ultimately pulling a deal off to move up 3 spots and get the Notre Dame weapon. Mayer has a chance to win the starting job out of camp but with the presence of Hooper he can also ease into the role as the season goes on.
Vic Analysis: While there were tight ends I personally preferred, Michael Mayer’s appeal to the Raiders makes a ton of sense. He has the best combination of passing game impact and blocking ability. His contested catch ability, which is both high level and necessary since his separation skills aren’t as good, should help the team improve in the red zone over years past. His ability in the run game will be an improvement over Waller’s and should help him see more playing time early.
Round 3 (70th Overall) - Byron Young, DL, Alabama
Team Fit: The Raiders added two defensive tackles in the 2022 Draft, Neil Farrell and Matthew Butler in rounds 4 and 5 respectively, but neither made a big push in their rookie seasons. In free agency, the team made some mid level moves, bringing back Jerry Tillery and signing John Jenkins and Adam Butler. With the level of play last year on the interior being sub-par at best, we were expecting a selection of another player on the DL. Young fits the long and storied mold of Crimson Tide defensive tackles. Young is expected to be a rotational player in year 1, and while it's possible he ends up starting near the end of the year he is likely a year 2 or 3 starter.
Vic Analysis: Like I previously said, Young is a stereotypical defensive lineman from Alabama. He is a solid technician in the run game, with the length and strength to two gap and shed offensive lineman. As an interior penetrator Young took a big step forward in 2022. While he isn’t a naturally explosive athlete, he showed flashes of first step quickness that wasn’t there in 2021 and earlier. Young will never be a solid athlete in space, as his lateral agility and quickness isn’t great even for his size. He is however a high floor run defender who can become a player impact on passing downs, which is better than any of the other options, especially long term, in the Raiders defensive tackle room.
Round 3 (100th Overall) - Tre Tucker, WKPR, Cincinnati
Team Fit: The Raiders have made a concerted effort to improve in special teams this offseason. They moved on from Trent Seig at LS and brought in Jacob Bobenmoyer to replace him. As a whole the Raiders have lacked game breaking speed in both the WR room and as a return man. Tucker has speed for days. A seasoned return man, Tucker is explosive once the ball is in his hands. As a rookie, he will likely see his fair share of gadget plays in addition to return duties. While he likely won’t ever be a starter, Tucker should be able to develop into a solid slot option in the receiving game. Years 2 and 3 should see the former Horned Frog settle into a WR3/4 role for the Raiders if all goes as expected.
Vic Analysis: Tucker is an explosive athlete who shows an ability to win in the return game, the short pass game, and the deep pass game. At his size he is never going to win with physicality but, thankfully for him, he has the agility and explosiveness to get open. Tucker, at 5’9” 182lbs, is going to be relegated to a slot role when on offense and will primarily be an underneath target on offense. His ability to uncover in short areas and then create explosive plays after getting the ball in his hands will be valuable. McDaniels’ offense and Garoppolo’s skillset combine nicely with Tucker’s ability in the screen and short game.
Round 4 (104th Overall) - Jakorian Bennett, CB, Maryland
Team Fit: The Raiders were heavily linked with Devon Witherspoon and Christian Gonzalez at the top of the draft. After day 2 ended with the team not making a pick in the defensive backfield the Raiders made a slight trade up in order to pick their favorite of the remaining cornerbacks. Jakorian Bennett is one of the fastest players in the draft and at the top of the 4th he was probably the top rated man coverage corner left. The Raiders added in David Long, Duke Shelly and Brandon Fayscon this free agency period, but none of those players are locked into long term deals. Bennett has the inside outside versatility that should allow him to see the field. Bennett is likely to start out as CB4 but as he develops and grows more accustomed to the pro game he will likely see his playing time increase.
Vic Analysis: The Raiders lack of depth and talent on the defensive backfield has been an issue for the past few seasons. This offseason has seen the team add multiple players with solid man coverage skill sets and Bennett fits that mold. Bennett is an explosive and fluid mover who is able to stick with receivers in phase. Bennett is also aggressive when it comes to impacting the catch point, which causes both penalties and pass break ups. At the next level he will need to rein in some of that aggression or he will be getting even more penalized than he was at Maryland.
Round 4 (135th Overall) - Aidan O’Connell, QB, Purdue
Team Fit: The Raiders went into the draft looking to pick up a developmental QB to bring in as a backup. With Jimmy G’s injury history the team needed to prioritize adding more to the QB room than just Brian Hoyer. There were rumblings that the team was interested in taking a QB early in the draft but the rumors implied that the Raiders only really liked Bryce Young and CJ Stroud. Once those players went first and second overall the team was happy to pivot to taking the best defender on their board and waited until the end of the 4th before trading up and taking Aidan O’Connell. To be the long term back up and developmental option.
Vic Analysis: O’Connell is a pocket passer through and through. He lacks the athleticism that has become more and more pronounced at the quarterback position. O’Connell thrives throwing with rhythm in the short and intermediate levels of the field. He lacks the velocity on his throws to really pressure deep and his ability to manipulate coverage needs improvement. O’Connell does have the necessary anticipation to make up for his lack of arm strength. He profiles as a solid long term backup but his lack of physical traits certainly limit his ceiling.
Round 5 (170th Overall) - Christopher Smith II, S, Georgia
Team Fit: The Raiders added Marcus Epps in free agency from the Eagles to take over as a starting safety next to Trevon Moehrig. However, in year 1 of Patrick Graham the former TCU safety struggled in his transition into the new scheme. The Raiders traded up for the 3rd time this draft in order to take the Georgia safety Christopher Smith II. It's likely that Smith will start out as a special teams player who will see some rotational play as the year goes on.
Vic Analysis: Smith II is an experienced and smart defender who makes up for his limited athletic profile with awareness and instincts. He plays aggressive in run support and was able to produce a good number of turnovers from the safety position. However, his lack of size, speed, or burst are limiting factors on his ceiling in the NFL. Smith II strikes me as a player who will be maxed out as a high end backup but replacement level starter.
Round 6 (203rd Overall) - Amari Burney, LB, Florida
Team Fit: Linebacker was, and still is, a clear need for the Raiders going into 2023 and beyond. Las Vegas elected to replace Denzel Perryman with Robert Spillane, which to me is paying more to downgrade. In the draft they didn't use a pick on the position until this point, in which they drafted the former Gator, Amari Burney. Burney is likely to be primarily a special teams player. With such names like Robert Spillane, Divine Deablo, and Luke Masterson ahead of him on the depth chart, the past is there for playing time for the rookie if he can earn it.
Vic Analysis: Burney is a WILL, run and chase LB who can also hold up a bit in man coverage. He’s an athletic player who can move laterally to fill gaps and is a sound tackler. A one year starter at Florida, Burney needs to continue to improve and hone his instincts in order to become a more consistent player. Burney also will need to develop his ability to get off of blocks, since offensive lineman who get their hands on him simply take him out of the play. He will need to show special teams ability in order to lock in a roster spot, but he has the size, speed, and open field tackling ability to do so.
Round 7 (231st Overall) - Nesta Jade Silvera, DL, Arizona State
Team Fit: The Raiders really didn’t like the way the defensive tackle room performed last year, so even after drafting Byron Young they used their last draft pick on Nesta Jade Silvera. The former Sun Devil has a lot of competition going into camp, and could be someone the team tries to get onto the practice squad. If he does make the 53 man roster, he will likely see playing time on special teams and at the end of the DL rotation.
Vic Analysis: Silvera flashes above average quickness, strength, and motor. However, his instincts and awareness are underdeveloped and need to improve significantly before he can be trusted for more playing time on the interior. He struggles to read offensive line movement and can be out positioned by offensive lineman. Silvera does play well when he’s able to one gap and get up the field.
Notable Undrafted Free Agents
John Samuel Shenker, TE, Auburn
Dalton Wagner, OT, Arkansas
McClendon Curtis, G, Chattanooga
Brock Martin, EDGE, Oklahoma State
George Tarlas, EDGE, Boise State
Adam Plant, EDGE, UNLV
Drake Thomas, LB, NCST
Azizi Hearns, CB, UCLA
Jordan Perryman, CB, Washington
Jaydon Grant, S, Oregon State
Conclusion
The Raiders spent much of this offseason trying to improve the overall depth of the roster. Considering they owned 4 top 100 picks to begin the draft and came away with 0 locked-in starters I'd say at the very least that was accomplished. The Raiders don't seem intent on competing in 2023 and this draft class has multiple players who need some development before taking a starting role. Looking at realistic best case scenarios I could see 4 players (Wilson, Mayer, Young, and Bennett) becoming starting level players by next year. Now it's on an entrenched yet maligned coaching staff to follow through and get them the necessary coaching to develop properly.

2023.05.21 16:18 raptorsympathizer Feedback on DIY flagstone walkway + path
(
Before)
(
After)
I am a total newbie to landscaping and hardscaping in search of feedback on a walkway I just completed. Before it was a hilly (6-7 degree slope) and muddy mess.
I did around 4 inches of crushed gravel, 1 inch of sand, and ensured that the slope was no more than 5 degrees (with a little retaining wall, it’s around 3 degrees). Then there is gator dust filling in the cracks. It isn’t perfectly flat due to variation in the stone — which is something I’m unsure is expected due to the nature of flagstone, or a sign of poor craftsmanship.
For the stepstones, I did around 2 inches of gravel and then pavers on top.
Both projects have landscaping fabric underneath to prevent weeds (mainly on walkway) and/or keep gravel from settling too much into the clay soil.
I’d love feedback on:
- Does it look well-done? The opinion of someone who isn’t family would be appreciated.
- Are there any concerns about safety (slope, unevenness, etc)
- Are there any suggestions for any future projects I tackle around the yard?
Edit: I still need to seal the flagstone. Also, pardon the dirt — two toddlers and a dog keep playing with the mulch.

2023.05.16 15:15 l1feoutdoors ATV in Agriculture: Safety in Mind
ATVs,
UTVs and
Side-by-Sides have become indispensable equipment for farmers and ranchers to navigate rough terrains and carry out a wide-variety of agricultural tasks. In recent years, the use of ATV parts in agriculture has become increasingly popular. ATV parts have revolutionized agricultural practices by improving efficiency, reducing labor costs, and increasing crop yield. However, using ATV parts in agriculture requires proper safety measures to avoid hazards. In this blog post, we will discuss the use of ATV parts in agriculture with a focus on safety. We will also highlight some popular ATV parts and accessories, such as trailer jacks, cargo box extenders, skid plates, chainsaw holders, cargo boxes, trailers, rotary brooms, Gator Wader gear, Gator Wader boots, plows and plow mounts.
ATV Parts Used In Agriculture
ATV parts play a vital role in agricultural operations. They make it easier for farmers and ranchers to move heavy loads, plow fields, and perform other essential tasks. Some of the most common ATV parts used in agriculture available at
L1FE Outdoors and include:
- Trailers: These are attached to the back of ATVs and are used to transport heavy loads. They come in different sizes and designs, depending on the intended use.
- Trailer Jacks: These are used to lift and support the trailer when unhitched from the ATV. Trailer jacks make it easier to load and unload cargo from the trailer.
- Skid Plates: ATV skid plates are protective plates attached to the bottom of ATVs. They prevent damage to the ATV's undercarriage when driving over rough terrain.
- Wood Chippers: In the agriculture industry, wood chippers are commonly used for clearing land, pruning trees, and removing branches and other debris.
- Cargo Box Extenders: These extend the cargo box capacity of an ATV, allowing it to carry more goods.
- Chainsaw Holders: These are used to hold chainsaws securely in place while driving. Chainsaw holders prevent damage to the chainsaw and reduce the risk of accidents.
- Rotary Brooms: These are used to clear debris and leaves from roads and sidewalks. They can also be used to clean livestock areas.
- Gator Wader Gear: This is a specialized clothing brand that provides waterproof and breathable protection in wet conditions.
- Gator Wader Boots: These are durable, waterproof boots that provide traction and grip in wet and muddy conditions.
- Plows & Plow Mounts: These are mounted to your ATV and used to plow fields, gardens, and driveways. They come in different sizes and designs to suit specific needs in all types of weather, including winter.
- Iron Baltic Dealer: We are proud to be an authorized dealer in Iron Baltic products. We are able to source and ship any ATV parts that are shown on the official Iron Baltic website straight to your door. Based in Europe, Iron Baltic designs premium-grade ATV parts for multiple uses, such as, trailers, skid plates, graders and scrapers, liquid storage tanks, silo and bale trailers, sweeper collectors, and much more!

2023.05.14 21:36 AdExpensive4995 BBS keep getting stuck in hop-up need help.
| Recently I got a new hop-up and nozzle for my gun and I’ve been having problems with it feeding. At first I thought it might be the nozzle being too long forcing the bbs forward but when I took off half a mm off the nozzle it still was having the same issue. I wanted to know if there is any way to solve this issue? Maybe it’s the bucking? I have a krytac crb mk2 G&G green bucking Maxx hopup Maxx nozzle 21.25mm (I sanded it down after I was having the problem to about 20.75mm) And a Prometheus 6.03 inner barrel submitted by AdExpensive4995 to airsoft [link] [comments] |
2023.05.11 23:58 WastedHope17 Shil'vati Racing 2
Shil'vati Racing
Part Two of Four
Walls
The Track Too Tough to Tame, the Darlington Raceway, had a new master. The Shil’vati were going to wrangle this beast. Minnie had forcibly taken over the directorship of NASCAR; Minnie being the nickname she had begrudgingly accepted since her early days of racing. Her exposure to this Human phenomenon at a rural plaza in South Carolina had become an obsession that she couldn’t escape. Her first show of dominance in the racing world was to destroy the very race track not so far away from Darlington where she had been defeated by Greg Owens. It was petty, she knew, but this world was under the Shil’vati Imperium now, and these primitives needed to know their place. She was the master of this beast and it would be tamed.
Most earnest Human rebellions had been quelled. Shil’vati bases were becoming the hubs from which galactic order was being disseminated by force. This included branching out roadways that could render fossil fuels useless, since the Imperium had already unlocked the ability to pull hydrogen from gas giants to fuel their ships. The energy derived from the hydrogen fuel could apply to interconnected roadways. If Shil’vati vehicles were on Shil’vati roads, they could stay electrically charged.
Minnie took this technology and applied it to the NASCAR track closest to her. This particular NASCAR tradition could use some sprucing up, she’d thought when she had the capacitive roadways interwoven with the asphalt on the Darlington Raceway. NASCAR was always a race of endurance, but now it had become five hundred grueling laps of fighting gravity, friction and their fellow motorists. Drivers had their qualms about it at first, but never having to take a pit stop was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up.
Of course, these promises didn’t exactly pan out for the Shil’vati. Not only did the friction against the capacitive surface cause tires to explode, these explosions were also particularly deadly as they caused electricity to chain beyond the bounds of the tires. When the memorials were finished, Minnie went back to the drawing board.
In addition to a capacitive track and vehicles, they added a Faraday cage to protect the drivers from future electrical explosions. It caused the cars to become heavier, but drivers were now safe from previous errors. However the errors did not stop coming. Indeed, the need for the pit crew remained as well; their jumpsuits needed further insulation. When racers could finish all five hundred laps, it was clear that Human endurance was much greater than that of the Shil’vati. Everyone remembers Tony Stewart’s infamous drive to be number one despite having gone number two during the 2004 Sirius Race at the Glen; a feat the Shil’vati weren’t up to challenging.
Shil’vati warrior racers had to have specially designed cockpits to allow for their seven feet stature to fit into a NASCAR regulation car. Even then, squeezing themselves into the window of the Faraday-caged, Shil-fitting cockpit had become its own form of entertainment for some spectators. These Shil’vati racers demanded they have their own Imperial vehicles.
Allowing this, a new class of vehicles began to grace the track. Most Shil’vati ships looked like shiny purple metal bricks. These new vehicles were shrunk down to NASCAR regulations, but they didn’t have wheels. They floated like all the other Shil’vati standard conveyances which made the capacitive surface obsolete. Human racers balked at using the capacitive surfaces in the first place since their tried and true octane racers could go faster than those that used the capacitive track.
Thus began a new era of mixed race cars.
Greg Owens, having become one of the mainstay Human racers, proved that this did not work in the spectators’ favor. During a race, he traded some paint with a Shil’vati racer. He butted his own vehicle under a floating vehicle ahead of him while approaching a turn. The sheer fact that there was a surface closer to the bottom of the floating vehicle made it overcompensate, and, thinking that it was about to hit the ground, lifted itself higher. The back of the shiny purple brick lifted while the nose stayed low.
The nose got hung up in the guard rail and caused the floating Shil’vati racer to grind against the rail until it gave out. The floating vehicle spun out, flipped over the guardrail, clearing seventeen rows of stands killing no less than twenty Humans and fourteen Shil’vati.
Greg was forced to retire from NASCAR or face a lifetime ban from the tracks. Minnie saw to it. That didn’t stop Greg Owens from creating his own team: Team GO. He trained his own cadre of Human racers who were more than a match for the Shil’vati. Meanwhile, Minnie returned to R&D for new safety designs for the races.
Minnie created different event types. There was the standard Human NASCAR which the Shil’vati racers abhorred. Another event was the capacitive racers. They were slow and steady and usually ended with a Human winner. There were Shil’vati vehicles only, which looked like a shiny low-flying purple rainbow until sponsors got their hands on them. Goddess knew how Wonder Bread was still in business, but their banner and others including Red Grail proudly adorned the floating bricks like they’d done on race cars since time immemorial. In order to keep the fans safe, Minnie had implemented repulsors on the guard rails along the track and fencing above so that the carnage would stay within the track. These repulsors caused a slight, shimmering distortion in the shape of what amounted to be a dome around the track that didn’t disturb the view.
—
Greg proposed a new type of event. “What does she run on?” Greg asked Minnie. He wore a curved alligator skin cowboy hat and a rhinestone suit festooned with leather bolas on the chest. He knew his presence rankled Minnie, his gaudiness clashed with her refined tastes.
For her part, Minnie humored Greg calmly. She was, after all, the director of racing for the Human institution of NASCAR and he was the same little blonde-headed pissant. “Hydrogen.”
Greg’s leading questions came out from his half sneer half smirk, “Do you know what asphalt is made of?”
“It’s a mixture of petroleum and concrete infused with some Shil’vati proprietary compounds for the capacitive workings.” Minnie took a sip of her Mint Julep. Though she wasn’t the Director of Horse Racing, she’d taken up the drink to keep her spirits up. Mint was like cocaine to the Shil’vati. Minnie wanted to stay on top of this particular dialogue and mint was her ticket.
Greg leaned forward, “Proprietary Shil’vati workings? Technically you're right I suppose, but what I was gettin’ at was that asphalt is generally at least ten percent hydrogen. I don’t know what your capacitive materials are exactly, but I’m betting your ladies,” he put considerable snark on the word ladies, “could find a way to increase that weight.”
Minnie’s eyes narrowed while her pupils dilated, “You mean to say that our racers could use the track itself as fuel?”
“I don’t know. Can you?” Greg’s smirk returned.
“Well that’s downright destructive! We’re already in the red in tire costs.” Minnie tongued the back of her front teeth in thought. “And now you want me to have to replace the track after every race?”
“It’ll be like racing floating bulldozers.” Greg giggled. “And contrary to what you think, Humans don't watch NASCAR to see people take left turns for 4 hours.” A glint of sadness flashed on his face. “They watch for the danger, the promise of chaos, the possibility of a crash. They watch for the destruction. There’s nothing Americans like more than destruction.”
“You think this will truly be worth it?”
“If I were a betting man, and I am, I would bet on this.”
—-
Soon after, Minnie published a new type of racing event: Shil’vati type racer vehicles only, were given enough fuel to last three hundred laps. After that, it was a race for who could cull hydrogen fuel from the very track to make it the last two hundred laps.
In the stands, amongst the vendors of drinks and snacks to suit the various tastes and functions desired by the Imperium were also vendors for other vices. They were strapping young shirtless Human men with hard, tanned, glistening bodies in booty shorts and bowties, carrying trays with suspender straps that held overlarge Omnipads. Once the Shil’vati spectators stopped drooling, they clamored in semi organized lines to bet on their favorite drivers. One line was for betting on the racers. The line behind the Stand Salamanders, as they were called, was for the spectators who wanted to personally slather sunscreen on them so that they wouldn’t get burned standing in the sun all day.
There were those who followed the old Human racing families, betting on Earnhardts and Pettys; they supported Team GO’s number Three car all the way. Shil’s placing their credits on the underdog number Five car and the Director’s own number Seven car. The atmosphere was electric….and not just because of the capacitive track.
The betting window closed just in time for the Humans to take their hats off their heads and put them on their chests. It was time to sing the Shil’vati National Anthem which ended with the customary, “Gentlemen, start your engines.” The green flag waved and they were off!
"Hello and welcome to the debut of a brand new event on the racing circuit. I am your race moderator Ree Ch’petti alongside my Human counterpart Rusty Martin. Rusty."
"Thanks Ch’petti! Whether we're coming to you over the loudspeakers here at track, over your radios, or directly into your living rooms via Holo-spheres, we are all here for what is sure to be a great day of racing. "
"That's right Rusty. After a grueling period of eight test races, the Director of Racing for the Human Institution of NASCAR has deemed today's race to be the first race of its kind, where in the Shil'vati engineered vehicles will utilize the very track itself as fuel."
"Did I hear you right? These racers are gonna be chewing up the track just to put the gravel in their gas tanks?"
"While it tends to be a bit more involved than that, that is the basic concept, yes.”
"Well if that don’t beat all I've ever seen. Good Gravy! I'm ready to get this race started! For all you race fans rooting for the Shil'vati Imperium, there are about seven fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine choices down there on the starting line, but I'm gonna have to pin my hopes on Bo Elliot from Team GO. I got the chance to sit down with the owner of Team GO, former racer Greg Owens, earlier this week. When I asked him what he thought his chances were to come out ahead in this race, he said "I’ll bet Mz. Minnie a pot of my Momma’s squirrel nut soup that Team GO is gonna hand her her own asphalt!”
"Another fine example of the fighting spirit we Shil'vati have come to admire of your people, even in the face of OVERWHELMING ODDS. The hand picked team of the racing Director has the obvious advantage as they were personally involved in all eight test runs.”
“Well, hold on there Ch’petti. Team GO was also involved in those test runs and they completed the runs just behind the number Seven vehicle each time.”
“As you said, behind the Director’s vehicle, yes.”
“Well on Earth we got us a sayin’, ‘It ain't over ‘till the fat lady sings’.”
“What does a bellowing obese female have to do with completing a race?”
“Ch’petti, sometimes I think your cornbread ain't done in the middle. Welp…hang on, it looks like I’ll have to explain that one to you some other time because I believe I see the pace car coming out on the track to get this race underway!”
“Right again Rusty. Here comes the Red Grail pace car, and immediately following behind him is the Seven, in the Pole Position, while Team GO is closely on its tail.”
“All the teams slowly build up speed as the green flag comes down as we begin the first ever lap of the 2043 Red Grail Anheuser-Busch Disappearing Derby!”
“What do you think the Shil’vati strategy will be for today's race, Ch’petti?”
“Well, Rusty, the objective of the contest is to be the first vehicle to complete 500 orbits, or ‘laps,’ around the track.”
“You don’t say?”
“Therefore, it makes analytical sense to apply the fastest possible rate of speed constantly, while ensuring your vehicle maintains enough fuel to complete 300 orbits. Collecting fuel before the 300th orbit will result in a vehicle's disqualification. Meaning they are no longer eligible to win the race, Rusty. Do you comprehend all that?”
“Yeah, I know my ass from a hole in the ground, I comprehend it just fine, I reckon. But I’m gonna have to disagree with you, Ch’petti. See, what you wanna do is stay in the middle of the pack. Pick you out a good spot three or four cars deep so that you can draft off of the vehicles ahead of you. Let them cut through that clean air, giving your vehicle less wind resistance so you can draft behind them, maintain the same speed but leave a little in the tank for that last bit of acceleration you need to slingshot around them and pull into first place at the last moment. I think that's what we can expect to see from Team GO, right up until refueling is allowed at lap 300. When that happens, ooh boy, watch out! It’ll be like a fox got into the henhouse as every racer is out for himself to get the good asphalt.”
“It does stand to reason that asphalt in the lower elevations of the track would have higher concentrations of hydrogen, as run-off precipitation pooled on the track and seeped deeper into the asphalt and can be found at deeper depths than at the higher elevations of the embankments on the turns. As such is the case, the racers should prioritize the highest deposits of hydrogen enriched asphalt first.”
“In other words, if the high-groove near the wall is regular gas , low-groove asphalt is your premium.”
“Your simplicity never ceases to amaze me, Rusty.”
For 295 laps, it was just as Rusty had said. Team GO driver Elliot stayed in the middle of the pack, and then Bo made his move to whip around first one, two, then three Shil racers until he was directly behind Minnie’s driver on lap 299. He was doing exactly what Greg told him to do before the race. As he passed the Seven on the low side, he only pulled ahead by about ¾ of a car length. This was completely on purpose, as it forced her into a poor choice. She could either stay abreast with him, create her own “lane” on the track and take the less optimum fuel, or she could fall behind his wake, entering second position, and try to time her asphalt collection around him.
Between compensating for the sudden, yet brief changes in elevation and risking collecting asphalt that the vehicle ahead of hers may have just collected, leaving her with no asphalt collected when she opened her retrieval ports she chose to create her own “lane.” A strategy each of the other Shil’vati racers copied.
Bo Elliot opened up his retrieval port for the first time. It took the vehicle about a second to collect enough asphalt to be filled. It might not sound like much, but one second of asphalt retrieval, traveling at roughly 200 mph results in a pothole in the pavement nearly 300 ft long. That's for one vehicle. There were eight on the track.
“There are the first batch of fuel retrievals being performed on the track now. Team GO’s inspired move on lap 299 has set him firmly in first position, but in words I’ve heard you say repeatedly over our broadcasting time together Rusty, ‘There’s still a whole lot of race to go.’”
“You’re damn right Ch’petti. Man, look at them purple cars just chewing up the track. Looks like my grandaddy’s tractor is fixin’ to plant a row a tobacco right there before turn one!”
“No doubt the sudden changes in elevation will have an immediate impact on the rest of the race.”
“We’re about to see how the number Three handles those elevation changes as he’s already coming around”
Team GO did, in fact, have an answer for the pothole problem. A brief, but perfectly timed boost to the elevators, not the accelerators, increased the amount of power the vehicle used to maintain the same elevation for levitation, as opposed to directing fuel to the accelerators for speed.
While this strategy would work in the early laps after the initial retrievals, it would quickly become obsolete. By lap 360 all the premium asphalt had been chewed up leaving only the low quality asphalt left spread out all across the track.
“I think here we can see the advantage start to shift back to the Shil’vati racers. The Human, Bo Elliot, has made sub-optimal passes around the track for the last 2 laps, yet he still remains in the lead. He will certainly not be able to maintain his position in first place if he keeps collecting lower quality hydrogen asphalt”
“Well that is easy for you to say. That track’s bumpy as a gator's back by now. It’s a wonder he’s still finding any asph—-WHAT WAS THAT!”
“It appears we’ve had our first casualty of the race. A Shil’vati speeder failed to compensate for the change in elevation and was pulled right into the wall on turn three. Thankfully, these vehicles were updated with the highest rated Faraday cages on the market. Thanks again to our friends at Red Grail, providing all our track safety and energy needs. Red Grail, official sponsor of Shil’vati Imperium NASCAR.”
“There goes another, Ch’petti! It looks like.. It looks like the number five car just ran outta gas! His belly is scraping dirt! Any second now he’s gonna...”
The gasps of the crowd were almost as loud as the crash. The front end of the number five car dropped to Earth and slid in the loose dirt and gravel until it finally caught the lip of asphalt that hadn't been chewed up yet and toppled ass over tea kettle, cartwheeling down the track.
“There’s the yellow caution flag as the Red Grail Pace Car comes out to make sure the track officials remove the wreckage so racing can continue.”
“You know Ch’petti, this is an interesting aspect of this type of racing because a fortunately timed accident can absolutely give these remaining drivers the time they need to scout the best remaining sections of track.”
“While that is true, the more important issue is that for every second the pace car is slowing them down, the vehicles are not running at their optimum speed and are depleting resources they scarcely can afford to throw away. It is a difficult aspect of the strategy behind this type of racing. Certainly dangerous to rely upon, but unwise to ignore completely. To use another one of your human colloquialisms ‘It keeps things interesting.’”
“Looks like the Wonder Bread tow truck has gotten the wreckage cleared and we are about to get another green flag. From this point on it might look more like a demolition derby out there than a NASCAR race. These drivers are gonna be bumpin’ and shovin’ for every last inch of usable asphalt to throw into these tanks.”
“I think what you mean to say is ‘hydrogen extraction chambers’...not ‘tanks.’”
“Ch’petti, I sure do appreciate your knowledge of the English language. Bless your heart!”
Just as Rusty said, the racers were getting desperate now as most cars had had to lower how much they stayed elevated by, in order to divert power to the accelerators. Some were running less than 2 inches off of the ground. That was fine if they stayed in a lane that was totally dirt track. While they wouldn't need to worry about the elevation changes, they also had no hope of collecting any additional asphalt. It meant they would need to pull last second maneuvers to elevate in time to immediately open and retrieve the asphalt. A difficult and dangerous maneuver.
This was the case for most of the racers… except for two of them. The number Seven of the Director’s team. And the number Three from Team GO.
One by one, the remaining purple bricks fell to the dirt and slid to a stop. With each stop an eruption of cheers and boos from the fans in the stands as they watched whomever they bet on fall one by one.
“And the sixth car comes to a halt, leaving only the number Seven car and the Three car still racing on the track at lap 498.
Two laps left. No asphalt left. Now was the time that both racers had to push their vehicle to the limit.
“The two racers are side by side. Neither racer gives an inch. Around turn one, Elliot looks to be edging ahead, down into turn two the Seven is nosing ahead….down the straightaway….turn three it’s still too close to call….here comes the white flag signaling the last lap to both racers.”
“The Seven has the inside line. The Three is on the outside. After an exhausting 499 lap race, it all comes down to the final four turns. Who will it be: the Shil’vati team led by the Director of Racing for the Human institution of NASCAR herself, or the Human team led by former NASCAR driving legend, Greg Owens? Headed into turn three and ELLIOT IS PULLING AWAY. HALF A CAR LENGTH. A CAR LENGTH. ONE AND HALF. THERE'S THE CHECKERED!!! TEAM GO WINS THE FIRST EVER RED GRAIL ANHEUSER-BUSCH DISAPPEARING DERBY!”
Team GO won by lowering its elevation to roughly half an inch off the ground and diverting all remaining power to accelerators. Darlington Raceway was stripped down to naked dirt.
Up in her private box, Minnie slammed her fists on the table in a furious rage. “FUCK! That tow-headed little pissant Greg Owens hasn’t seen the last of me. He’s been a sand in my clam since we were children,” she said as she gulped down the last of her Julep. “FUCK. Make improvements to the vehicles! Find a way to shave time off!” She flexed her arms spasmodically as she paced in what would appear to be a mint fit. She turned to her head of R&D and shrieked, “Make us lighter, faster, stronger! Next race on the Disappearing Derby circuit, we have to win!”
—-
The people loved it. Humans loved seeing the Shil’vati fail. Shil’vati loved this new aspect of strategy to this mostly turn left sport that tended to confuse them. Tickets, Holo-subscriptions, and pay-per-views skyrocketed. The bettors’ wallets grew fat.
Eventually, Minnie calmed down and was able to communicate her experience with the rollers of the old guided car wash with the racers. “You can make shallow cuts in the road, making them ‘bumpy’ without disrupting your regulators so much that you fly off the track.” She’d told them in strategic meetings where she slurped down mint juleps as fast as they could be given to her.
Minnie took the credit and the credits while Greg got the wins. He took her money only to find new ways to spite her.
