Ok, so I work in a very specialised industry, transaction-level analysis of credit card data for mining customer insights.
The tools are very specialised; think mainframes (ok the cool kids are on Spark, but they are rapidly losing hair trying to debug java error logs that make 0 sense). And the number of people in it is maybe between 100-200 in Australia. So it's a very small field of high-paid jobs.
This junior person came into the team with 2-3 years of experience in "automation" in another field, but when you work with him, you know his technical skill sucked. So we spend time training him up, but he's still got a long way to go. But given how hard it is to find talent, we decided to keep him on even though he's just mediocre because even finding someone mediocre is HARD AF.
Lo and behold, one day during code review, a senior developer decided to give him some advice when he said, "I tried this way, but it didn't work so I went and did it the long way" The senior developer just said, "well the solution to that is to try harder" and on the spot wrote the code that would solve his problem with 10x less code and it looked cleaner!
Anyway, the guy felt indignant the rest of the day, and you can tell he was trying really hard to control himself and not throw a tantrum that day.
Three months later, he came in one day and said that he had gotten an offer elsewhere, and the managers scrambled to put together a deal to keep him. He stayed and got a decent pay rise. This is all happening when there's a company-wide hiring freeze, and all hires need to go to the CIO. So the managers pulled a lot of strings and spent heaps of social capital on keeping him.
But
Two months later, a head-of of another department just said, we offered a role to this guy, and he accepted.
All the managers were like, what?! After we had spent all the time in the world to try and keep you, and you just stabbed us in the back by joining another team? What makes it worse is that he was clearly being used as a pawn. The reason is that the head-of actually lost a team member to our team a few months back, so instead of hiring the best talent in the market, he decided to offer a role to this junior person to get back to us. He was gloating about it too.
To management in my team, that felt like a sick burn, especially the guy who offered him a job has a reputation of being a bad manager, and even with that, he decided to jump ship. I mean, he will not grow much given how bad the reputation of the other head-of is, but he won't listen and just coldly resigned from the team.
Bridges are burned. After the effort the manager had put in to retain him, he just walked away without a hint of regret, which looked very disrespectful. I doubt he will ever get another role in our team, and given how small the industry is, his reputation is basically ruined.

2023.03.30 13:11 Norman__Clature My (41F) fiancée (31F) of 13 months lies to herself about her motivations and intentions and then lies to me or seems just as shocked as I am about what she’s done when she’s done something damaging to our relationship. Can I trust her?

I’ve noticed a pattern in my partner, one where her actions don’t align with her words and purported intentions.
We’ve had a few big blow ups since we got together, each of them brought on by her pulling some bullshit move, and then when I confront her about it, she always apologizes and says I’m right and she ‘just didn’t see it.’
A recent example of this is we had planned a race weekend in Rhode Island this June and last weekend she texted to tell me that (not ask me if) she had invited a couple she is friends with whom I’ve never met and basically told them we would stay at a house they own with them while on vacation. When I told her this should have been a conversation, she did what she always does - apologized and just said it was a mistake and she wants to move on from it. We do, and then inevitably she’ll do something that lands us back in the same spot within a month or two.
My question for the group, she cheated on her ex husband only months before we met and I didn’t know the full story of what went down until she told me recently. She told me as she was driving to have her affair she was telling herself ‘we aren’t going to have sex’ even though she was literally driving to meet a man she knew from work, a married man with kids (she knew this). I asked her if she showered and got ready before leaving like you shower and get ready if you know you’re going to be having sex soon and she said yes she did. So clearly she knew what she was on her way to do, but still she was telling herself it wasn’t really going to happen. Obviously it then did. For two days at his camp.
So is someone who can cheat like that and lie to themselves about their motivation always going to have a problem with honesty and curbing impulsive behavior? She also slept with a guy she works with a month or so before we got serious. I thought they had maybe just gone on a date or done some work flirting but nope. Six months into our relationship I asked about it, and she confessed they had slept together. So I was like, we’re you going to tell me you slept with a guy from work you still see all the time?
There’s just been a lot of stuff like this. Crazy behavior to pull in a relationship that she plays kinda dumb about and makes it seem like it’s almost something unique to me that I expect honesty, communication, and to be treated with respect in this relationship - ie not have my partner singing me up for stuff and not even asking me.
Seriously considering ending things but there is a lot of good there too and honestly I just don’t want to start all over with someone.
Any advice would be really appreciated. I’m at a bit of a loss.

Hi, I imagine this has been asked before but I'm not sure how to go about phrasing my question so it's difficult for me to google it.

Here is what my situation is in my actual code:
I have one "main" struct with different members.
Inside of this struct, I have ~20 or so other rather simple structs which hold data used for calculations.
The "main" struct has a function that I call, similarly to the "something" function from the playground example. That function mutates state in the main struct, so I *have* to keep the &mut self, and (currently) I simply pass a copy of the smaller struct to it, because I didn't previously have a need to modify it. However, things have changed and I am now looking to mutate the small struct in that same function.
I tried just borrowing it as &mut at first like what I did in the playground example, but since I already borrow &mut self and the small struct lives on the main struct, it appears that doing so would create two mutable references which the compiler doesn't like.
I do feel like there *should* be a way to do this though, since I already borrow &mut self, which by extension does make it so I borrow the small struct, I just need some way of "finding" it in my function. I'm not sure if it helps at all but I can guarantee that the small struct will *always* live on the big struct.

A newly discovered patent by Take-Two Interactive hints that Grand Theft Auto VI will have smarter non-playable characters (NPCs), which has our minds swirling with possibilities. Rather than following programmed directives, NPCs that leverage advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities could potentially feel like more life-like, in the decisions they make in the game.
We might be getting ahead of ourselves a bit—we have no idea what exactly Take-Two and its Rockstar Games subsidiary have planned for the next GTA installment, and to be clear, GTA VI has not been announced—but we would certainly welcome smarter NPCs. Not just for the GTA series, but for gaming in general.
The patent (listed as 16/393365) was filed in October of last year, by inventors David Hynd and Simon Parr. According to their LinkedIn profiles, both work for Rockstar Games—Hynd is the associate director of technology and technical director of AI and gameplay, while Parr is the lead AI and gameplay programmer. So even though Take-Two Interactive owns the patent, it seems the technology is destined for a Rocktar Games title.
"Computer games often provide 3D worlds in which the game unfolds. Such games often include non-player characters (NPCs) that exist in the game's 3D world and who interact with the human players, the 3D environment and other NPCs. These NPCs can be programmed in an artificial intelligence manor such that their actions in the game are driven, at least in part, by real-time decisions made by the NPC algorithm regarding the current state of the game and the environment," the patent explains.
It goes on to state that this type of interaction is driven by a collection of nodes and edges (vehicles and links), and that "conventional systems only provide limited resources" for developers. As it applies to the GTA franchises, this is likely why NPCs all seem to drive and navigate the world in the same manner, with only visual cues distinguishing them from one another.
"Since currently-available multiplayer gaming systems are deficient because they cannot provide realistic movements for non-player objects in a virtual world without increasing computational resources and/or restricting game development/design, a system for managing nodes and node graphs relating to non-player characters that provides virtual navigation and management can prove desirable and provide a basis for a wide range of network applications, such as creating a realistic virtual world that is not limited by hardware and software limitations," the patent states.
Part of the patent involves tapping into the cloud to overcome local hardware capabilities, for advanced AI processing. And from our reading, it sounds like the patent would result in NPCs have more individualized personalities, at least with regards to traveling about.
We'll have to wait and see what develops, and hopefully Rockstar Games sees fit to announce a new GTA game soon.
