PODCAST:https://ayearofwarandpeace.podbean.com/e/ep1519-hail-and-farewell-george-moore-ave-chapter-102/ PROMPTS: byo Today's Reading, viaProject Gutenberg: One day Father James said the time would come when I would give up hunting—everything, for the classics, and I rode home, elated, to tell my mother the prophecy. But she burst out laughing, leaving me in no doubt whatever that she looked upon Father James's idea of me as an excellent joke; and the tragedy of it all is that I accepted her casual point of view without consideration, carrying it almost at once into reality, playing truant instead of going to my Latin lesson. Father James, divested of his scholarship, became a mere priest in my eyes. I think that I avoided him, and am sure that I hardly ever saw him again, except at Mass. A strange old church is Carnacun, built in the form of a cross, with whitewashed walls and some hardened earth for floor; and I should be hard set to discover in my childhood an earlier memory than the panelled roof, designed and paid for by my father, who had won the Chester Cup some years before. The last few hundred pounds of his good fortune were spent in pitch-pine rafters and boards, and he provided a large picture of the Crucifixion, painted by my cousin, Jim Browne, who happened to be staying at Moore Hall at the time, from Tom Kelly the lodge-keeper, the first nude model that ever stood up in Mayo (Mayo has always led the way—Ireland's van-bird for sure). It was taken in great pomp from Moore Hall to Carnacun; and the hanging of it was a great and punctilious affair. A board had to be nailed at the back whereby a rope could be attached to hoist it into the roof, and lo! Mickey Murphy drove a nail through one of the gilt leaves which served as a sort of frame for the picture. My father shouted his orders to the men in the roof that they were to draw up the picture very slowly, and, lest it should sway and get damaged in the swaying, strings were attached to it. My father and mother each held a string, and the third may have been held by Jim Browne, or perhaps I was allowed to hold it. Some time afterwards a Blessed Virgin and a St Joseph came down from Dublin, and they were painted and gilded by my father, and so beautifully, that they were the admiration of every one for a very long while, and it was Jim Browne's Crucifixion and these anonymous statues that awakened my first aesthetic emotions. I used to look forward to seeing them all the way from Moore Hall to Carnacun—a bleak road as soon as our gate-lodge was passed: on one side a hill that looked as if it had been peeled; on the other some moist fields, divided by small stone walls, liked by me in those days, for they were excellent practice for my pony. Along this road our tenantry used to come from the villages, the women walking on one side (the married women in dark blue cloaks, the girls hiding their faces behind their shawls, carrying their boots in their hands, which they would put on in the chapel yard), the men walking on the other side, the elderly men in traditional swallow-tail coats, knee-breeches, and worsted stockings; the young men in corduroy trousers and frieze coats. As we passed, the women curtsied in their red petticoats; the young men lifted their round bowler-hats; but the old men stood by, their tall hats in their hands. At the bottom of every one was a red handkerchief, and I remember wisps of grey hair floating in the wind. Our tenantry met the tenantry of Clogher and Tower Hill, and they all collected round the gateway of the chapel to admire the carriages of their landlords. We were received like royalty as we turned in through the gates and went up the wooden staircase leading to the gallery, frequented by the privileged people of the parish—by us, and by our servants, the postmaster and postmistress from Ballyglass, and a few graziers. In the last pew were the police, and after the landlords these were the most respected. As soon as we were settled in our pew the acolytes ventured from the sacristy tinkling their bells, the priest following, carrying the chalice covered with the veil. As the ceremony of the Mass had never caught my fancy, I used to spend my time looking over the pew into the body of the church, wondering at the herd of peasantry, trying to distinguish our own serfs among those from the Tower Hill and Clogher estates. Pat Plunket, a highly respectable tenant (he owned a small orchard), I could always discover; he knelt just under us, and in front of a bench, the only one in the body of the church, and about him collected those few that had begun to rise out of brutal indigence. Their dress and their food were slightly different from the commoner kind. Pat Plunket and Mickey Murphy, the carpenter, not the sawyer, were supposed to drink tea and eat hot cakes. The others breakfasted off Indian-meal porridge. And to Pat Plunket's bench used to come a tall woman, whose grace of body the long blue-black cloak of married life could not hide. I liked to wonder which among the men about her might be her husband. And a partial memory still lingers of a cripple that was allowed to avail himself of Pat Plunket's bench. His crutches were placed against the wall, and used to catch my eye, suggesting thoughts of what his embarrassment would be if they were taken away whilst he prayed. A great unknown horde of peasantry from Ballyglass and beyond it knelt in the left-hand corner, and after the Communion they came up the church with a great clatter of brogues to hear the sermon, leaving behind a hideous dwarf whom I could not take my eyes off, so strange was his waddle as he moved about the edge of the crowd, his huge mouth grinning all the time. Our pew was the first on the right-hand side, and the pew behind us was the Clogher pew, and it was filled with girls—Helena, Livy, Lizzy, and May—the first girls I ever knew; and these are now under the sod—all except poor Livy, an old woman whom I sometimes meet out with her dog by the canal. In the first few on the left was a red landlord with a frizzled beard and a perfectly handsome wife, and behind him was Joe McDonnel from Carnacun House, a great farmer, and the wonder of the church, so great was his belly. I can see these people dimly, like figures in the background of a picture; but the blind girl is as clear in my memory as if she were present. She used to kneel behind the Virgin's altar and the Communion rails, almost entirely hidden under an old shawl, grown green with age; and the event of every Sunday, at least for me, was to see her draw herself forward when the Communion bell rang, and lift herself to receive the wafer that the priest placed upon her tongue and having received it, she would sink back, overcome, overawed, and I used to wonder at her piety, and think of the long hours she spent sitting by the cabin fire waiting for Sunday to come round again. On what roadside was that cabin? And did she come, led by some relative or friend, or finding her way down the road by herself? Questions that interested me more than anybody else, and it was only at the end of a long inquiry that I learnt that she came from one of the cabins opposite Carnacun House. Every time we passed that cabin I used to look out for her, thinking how I might catch sight of her in the doorway; but I never saw her except in the chapel. Only once did we meet her as we drove to Ballyglass, groping her way, doubtless, to Carnacun. Where else would she be going? And hearing our horses' hoofs she sank closer to the wall, overawed, into the wet among the falling leaves. As soon as the Communion was over Father James would come forward, and thrusting his hands under the alb (his favourite gesture) he would begin his sermon in Irish (in those days Irish was the language of the country among the peasantry), and we would sit for half an hour, wondering what were the terrible things he was saying, asking ourselves if it were pitchforks or ovens, or both, that he was talking; for the peasantry were groaning aloud, the women not infrequently falling on their knees, beating their breasts; and I remember being perplexed by the possibility that some few tenantry might be saved, for if that happened how should we meet them in heaven? Would they look another way and pass us by without lifting their hats and crying: Long life to yer honour? My memories of Carnacun Chapel and Father James Browne were interrupted by a sudden lurching forward of the car, which nearly flung me into the road. Whelan apologised for himself and his horse, but I damned him, for I was annoyed at being awakened from my dream. There was no hope of being able to pick it up again, for the chapel bell was pealing down the empty landscape, calling the peasants from their desolute villages. It seemed to me that the Carnacun bell used to cry across the moist fields more cheerfully; there was a menace in the Gort bell as there is in the voice of a man who fears that he may not be obeyed, and this gave me an interest in the Mass I was going to hear. It would teach me something of the changes that had happened during my absence. The first thing I noticed as I approached the chapel was the smallness of the crowd of men about the gateposts; only a few figures, and they surly and suspicious fellows, resolved not to salute the landlord, yet breaking away with difficulty from traditional servility. Our popularity had disappeared with the laws that favoured us, but Whelan's appearance counted for something in the decaying sense of rank among the peasantry, and I mentally reproached Edward for not putting his servant into livery. It interested me to see that the superstitions of Carnacun were still followed: the peasants dipped their fingers in a font and sprinkled themselves, and the only difference that I noticed between the two chapels was one for the worse; the windows at Gort were not broken, and the happy, circling swallows did not build under the rafters. It was easier to discover differences in the two congregations. My eyes sought vainly the long dark cloak of married life, nor did I succeed in finding an old man in knee-breeches and worsted stockings, nor a girl drawing her shawl over her head. The Irish language is inseparable from these things, I said, and it has gone. The sermon will be in English, or in a language as near English as those hats and feathers are near the fashions that prevail in Paris. The Gort peasants seemed able to read, for they held prayer-books, and as if to help them in their devotion a harmonium began to utter sounds as discordant as the red and blue glass in the windows, and all the time the Mass continued very much as I remembered it, until the priest lifted his alb over his head and placed it upon the altar (Father James used to preach in the vestment, I said to myself); and very slowly and methodically the Gort priest tried to explain the mystery of Transubstantiation to the peasants, who lent such an indifferent ear to him that it was difficult not to think that Father James's sermons, based on the fear of the devil, were more suitable to Ireland. A Mass only rememberable for a squealing harmonium, some panes in terrifying blues and reds, and my own great shame. However noble my motive may have been, I had knelt and stood with the congregation; I had even bowed my head, making believe by this parade that I accepted the Mass as a truth. It could not be right to do this, even for the sake of the Irish Literary Theatre, and I left the chapel asking myself by what strange alienation of the brain had Edward come to imagine that a piece of enforced hypocrisy on my part could be to any one's advantage. It seemed to me that mortal sin had been committed that morning; a sense of guilt clung about me. Edward was consulted. Could it be right for one who did not believe in the Mass to attend Mass? He seemed to acquiesce that it might not be right, but when Sunday came round again my refusal to get on the car so frightened him that I relinquished myself to his scruples, to his terror, to his cries. The reader will judge me weak, but it should be remembered that he is my oldest friend, and it seemed to me that we should never be the same friends again if I refused; added to which he had been telling me all the week that he was getting on finely with his third act, and for the sake of a hypothetical act I climbed up on the car. Now, Whelan, don't delay putting up the horse. Mind you're in time for Mass, and don't leave the chapel until the last Gospel has been read. Must we wait for Benediction? I cried ironically. Edward did not answer, possibly because he does not regard Benediction as part of the liturgy, and is, therefore, more or less indifferent to it. The horse trotted and Whelan clacked his tongue, a horrible noise from which I tried to escape by asking him questions. Are the people quiet in this part of the country? Quite enough, he answered, and I thought I detected a slightly contemptuous accent in the syllables. Not much life in the country? I hear the hunting is going to be stopped? Parnell never told them to stop the hunting. You're a Parnellite? He was a great man. The priests went against him, I said, because he loved another man's wife. And O'Shea not living with her at the time. Even if he had been, I answered, Ireland first of all, say I. He was a great man. He was that. And the priest at Gort—was he against him? Wasn't he every bit as bad as the others? Then you don't care to go to his church? I'd just as lief stop away. It's strange, Whelan; it's strange that Mr Martyn should insist on my going to Gort to Mass. Of what use can Mass be to any one if he doesn't wish to hear it? Whelan chuckled, or seemed to chuckle. He will express no opinion, I said to myself, and abstractions don't interest him. So, turning to the concrete, I spoke of the priest who was to say Mass, and Whelan agreed that he had gone agin Parnell. Well, Whelan, it's a great waste of time going to Gort to hear a Mass one doesn't want to hear, and I have business with Mr Yeats. Maybe you'd like me to turn into Coole, sur? I was thinking we might do that ... only you won't speak to Mr Martin about it, will you? Because, you see Whelan, every one has his prejudices, and I am a great friend of Mr Martyn, and wouldn't like to disappoint him. Wouldn't like to contrairy him, sur? That's it, Whelan. Now, what about your dinner? You don't mind having your dinner in a Protestant house? It's all one to me, sur. The dinner is the main point, isn't it, Whelan? Begad it is sur, and he turned the horse in through the gates. Just go round, I said, and put the horse up and say nothing to anybody. Yes, sur.

2023.03.30 12:07 Sai-ChelgiriHow to Manage Your Metalworking Fluids?
Metalworking fluids are complex chemical formulations used in the machining process to perform various functions such as cutting, corrosion protection, and stability. They are usually divided into four main categories:
Neat oils (not mixed with water) - Also known as straight oils.
Water-miscible oils (macro emulsions or microemulsions with more than 30% oil) - Also known as soluble oils.
Semi-synthetics (micro-emulsions with less than 30% oil content and less than 1-micron oil droplet size).
Full synthetics, which contain no oil and are true solutions.
Note: Depending on the type of fluid and its composition, a certain percentage of water content may also be present. The quantity and quality of the raw materials used to create metalworking fluid concentrates can vary depending on the choice made by the fluid formulator or compounder. The manufacturer recommends one of these cutting fluids over another based on the needs of the customer, the application, and the materials being machined. However, whichever type of metalworking fluid you use, all fluids need maintenance in some way. By following these best methods to manage metalworking fluids, you can significantly increase the longevity of a fluid, the shop environment, and the overall level of part quality. How To Manage Metalworking Fluids - 5 Key Tips 1. Maintain Proper Coolant Concentration Fluid technology has greatly improved over the years, providing better performance for manufacturers, but these advanced fluids are designed to work best at specific concentrations. Running the coolant too thin or too strong can impact its effectiveness. Running it too strong can result in over-lubrication and overconsumption of the fluid while running it too thin can lead to the breakdown of the fluid more quickly, thus, requiring more frequent changes. By regularly monitoring concentration, you can reduce the need for additives and save on costs. To accurately monitor concentration, use a refractometer and measure it frequently, such as once a day or twice a day, depending on the operating schedule. It's important to have the same person/tool to ensure consistency. Automatic mixers help to maintain consistent concentration when recharging sumps. Do not simply add water or coolant to the sump to adjust concentration. Large coolant systems may benefit from using digital monitoring systems to track concentration, pH, and other factors. 2. Keep Optimum Water Quality Water is a key component of metalworking fluid, making up a significant portion of the fluid in the sump. It is important to use high-quality water in order to maintain the fluid's stability and ensure proper performance. One issue that can arise is hard water, which can cause chemical instability and increase the risk of emulsion splitting. To avoid this, it is recommended to test and treat the water before using it in the fluid. For facilities with hard tap water, installing a deionized water line can be beneficial. Coolant mixers can be attached directly to these lines to guarantee proper mixing. Once the water is considered suitable, mixing the oil and water is the final step. For optimal performance and enhanced emulsion stability, it is recommended to follow the "O.I.L." method, which stands for "oil in last". This helps with manual mixing, while automatic mixers already mix using best practices. 3. Balance Right pH Levels The alkaline level plays a crucial role in the functioning of the fluid. A pH level that is too low will cause the fluid to become ineffective and will require a change. It is vital to raise the pH if it falls below 8. If it drops below 7, the fluid is deemed unusable and must be changed. The more acidic the fluid becomes, the greater the risk of rust formation. While some additives can be used to increase the pH, monitoring the concentration can eliminate the need for them. Checking the pH level is straightforward, simply mix the fluid in the sump, dip a pH testing strip, wait for it to change color, and compare it to a reference sheet. With the pH information, appropriate actions can be taken. 4. Remove Tramp Oil The smooth functioning of slideways and spindles in metalworking operations depends on lubricating oils. These oils can leak into the metalworking fluid, altering its chemical composition and promoting the growth of bacteria. This can result in the release of hydrogen sulfide gas, causing a foul odor and damage to the coolant. Synthetic coolants are effective in preventing the emulsification of tramp oils, which can be easily removed through skimming or using specialized equipment such as a skimmer, centrifuge, or coalescer. Not only does this extend the life of the coolant, but it also prevents the buildup of residues on the machines and protects electronic components from damage caused by oil mist and smoke. 5. Utilize Fluid Filtration It's crucial to prevent metal chips and fines from settling in the sump, as they can lead to machine wear and harm the workpiece. If left unattended, the buildup of these fines can result in dead zones where additives are unable to perform and cause a rapid decline in the effectiveness of the coolant. Implementing filters not only reduces the wear and damage to the machine but also reduces the overall consumption and cost of the coolant. Takeaway As metalworking fluids become increasingly advanced and costly, it's essential to adopt a proactive approach to their management. By taking the necessary steps to optimize the use of these fluids, you can ensure your machine performs at its best. Castrol Industrial Lubricants is a trusted provider of high-quality metalworking fluids that can support this effort. With a range of products designed to meet the unique needs of your operations, Castrol Industrial Lubricants can help you get the most out of your metalworking fluids.
2023.03.30 12:07 DreaDNoughT1666I found something, a mannequin (part 4)
If you don’t remember what happened in the last part, you can find out here And if you’re new to this series here is what happened. I did do some research on Atari and Commodore, and in 1983 there was a major event going on that had Atari right in the center of it, they called it “the video game crash of 1983” supposedly it was because of the game E.T for the Atari 2600 that was such a bad game, they had invested so much in the licensing rights for it, and so many people were disappointed by the weird gameplay of the game that Atari just decided it was cheaper to go bankrupt and then drive out into an unknown location in the Nevada desert, and just bury everything…. Including brand new prototype controllers, software and systems. At the same time Commodore was on their third revision of the, at the time, very popular computer the Commodore 64, which at the center of it had… the exact same processor… well not exactly the same, but not in a way that would make much of a difference. Meaning they can run the same instructions, though the programs would still end up being majorly different from each other, suppose however that the program could adapt and change itself, mutate like a human virus, so that when it has entered a new system, as long as there is any familiarity in that new system, it could run.. that should never happen in real life though, because that would mean that humanity would be extremely fucked… but it does happen.. let me go back a few days and I’ll explain. I finally received the chip reader from china in the mail, so I hooked it up to my modern computer and updated all the drivers and the program, the internet has been slowing down even more lately but there was no rush, good things will come to those who wait as the old saying always goes, when it finally was done I wasted no time in plugging in the rom which the program immediately identified and I clicked read.. It popped up a window which showed the data of the first rom and then prompted me if I wanted to read another one, so I swapped the chip with the second one and clicked “yes” it began reading, after a while it too read successfully, but this time it didn’t show the data, it just popped up another window that read “Thank you” and then began playing what I can only describe as “really awful high pitched noise” at full volume. I wish I could say I recognized it as a data stream in audio form, but at the moment all I could think about was how paralyzingly painful the sound was, my entire head felt like it was going to explode, and it felt like my eyes were about to pop out of their sockets, even though I was squeezing my eyelids shut as hard as I could. While this noise was playing, I had called down to the floor and I couldn’t move, I could barely breathe, it probably didn’t last very long, but if you’ve ever been in an almost panicked state before, you know that time seems to slow down significantly and you become hyper aware of the tiniest of details, everything in the entire room seemed to start vibrating and shaking violently. After what felt like hours of torturous noise there was a loud pop and it all went quiet, “way too quiet” I thought, as I slowly started to open my eyes to take a look around, I noticed that all my computers had turned off, I tried moving and getting back up very slowly because it felt like one thousand razorblades had grazed every single part of my skin, even if I couldn’t see any pierced skin it still hurt massively in a stinging kind of way. I had to get back to my computer though to see what was going on, I tried turning it back on but it completely refused, no lights turning on, no fan noise, no nothing, I took a deep breath trying to think what could’ve happened but my brain felt like it was made out of maple syrup. I don’t think you’ll blame me for what I did next, I simply panicked, grabbed my coat, the commodore and my phone, I put the coat on in a hurry and went out to my car and just drove, aimlessly, that’s when I do my best thinking anyway, and I was considering just dumping the commodore like the previous owner but that’s when I noticed something, I could not hear the car engine, at all, and I happened to take a glance at my rear view mirror, red glistening liquid was seeping out of my ears “it must’ve gotten so loud that it blew out my eardrums” I mumbled to myself, feeling creeped out by the sight of the blood. I couldn’t stop staring though, as the blood started coming out my nose as well, I tried wiping it off on my shirt, but it just wouldn’t stop. Somehow though, the sight of the blood made me remember the code that flashed up on the screen before everything went crazy, when I first saw it I didn’t pay much attention to it, but now that I was thinking about it, I did see something slightly off about it in the header section that was translated to ASCII. “Atari inc copyright 1982” and then what looked like coordinates, I do have a very good memory for numbers, so I just punched it into the GPS and I started heading that way. I think that the blood loss started to seriously affect me after a while, because I saw things that should not have been possible on that drive, things like angels with torn tattered clothes, scorched flesh and soaked in blood flying around on the sky, strange animals that looked like regular ones, but they looked wrong, especially considering that herbivores, like horses and rabbits, shouldn’t be chewing on corpses. They didn’t even bother to move as I drove past, so it must’ve been hallucinations right !? On the way I did have to stop for gas, it was quite a long drive, I thought that I might as well fill up on some snacks and empty my bladder, and while I was washing my hands and face trying to get all the blood off, for a split second I thought I could hear some faint whispering, which made my head spin so much that I had to brace myself.. When I was finally done in the bathroom I went over to pay the cashier, I still couldn’t hear anything, which made it a bit clunky to pay, but I just paid through my phone as usual anyway and went back out to my car, the rest of the drive went by in a hurry, I can’t really remember much about it, more than that I saw more angels and weird shadowy figures behind the trees, but I did finally arrive at my destination and that does bring us back to more current events. When I got out of my car I saw what looked like a big concrete bunker out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a big forrest, my only thought was : what they did here sure seemed like they really wanted to keep things secret from the public. There was a big metal door under a small overhang , so I went up to it and tried the handle, it was of course locked but I decided that I’d just knock on it, I just stood there immobile for a bit, thinking of what I should do if there wasn’t any response, however the handle eventually jiggled and the door slid ajar. Hesitant I opened the door and entered, only to be struck by a bright light and vibrant warm feeling environment, when my eyes had adjusted I saw that the walls were covered with half height wood paneling and white wallpaper with small red Atari logos painted on them, there were chairs and sofas around the walls with plants next to them that looked so fresh and nice that I wondered if they were plastic, but more importantly there were people hunched over sitting in those sofas and chairs, they looked like they were sleeping. I did move closer though calling out to them to see if they’d wake up, no response, I moved even closer and poked one of them with my finger, he fell over on the ground and I could see that they were just mannequins.. hmm why would they have mannequins here ? I noticed that there was a reception area as well, the countertop seemed to be made out of a granite slab sitting on top of their volcano logo, I walked up to it and saw that there was a chair with yet another mannequin in it, in front of the mannequin there was a computer, it was on and I thought I could find the floor plan on it, and sure enough browsing through the files I did find the floor plan, and one area on the map showed just what I wanted to see “subliminal test area 1”. I hurried over there running through empty corridors and glass doors only to find what looked like an operating table, with a mannequin torso and a big flat blade screwdriver on it, I couldn’t resist touching the torso, how odd… it felt like real skin when I touched it, but I was quickly brought out of my thoughts when I heard a repeated banging noice, I looked over and saw a window, and on the other side of that window, a woman was banging on it with her hands trying to get my attention.. I walked up to the it and took a look at her, she was roughly 1,65 Meters tall and had her red curly hair back in a pony tail, her pale blue eyes, were stunningly beautiful. She also had a lab coat on with an Atari logo on it. She told me that she had managed to get trapped in the adjacent room and that the mannequins were in fact robots that did most of the maintenance in this facility, and that the mannequin on the table was the one in charge of this room, so if I could just grab some spare parts from the other ones that I saw earlier and get her out of there, she would be very grateful. Not being able to resist the request of a beautiful woman, I grabbed the screwdriver from the table and hurried back to the main lobby, when I got there I did notice that most of the robots actually were missing some limbs, so I had to pick different limbs from different robots, it was pretty easy, I shoved the screwdriver into the sockets and gave it a twisted and off they came with a squish, they were heavier than I expected though so I had to make at least 3 runs, I carried the head last, it was dripping what looked like hydraulic fluid though so I had to take carful steps but hurry so that it wouldn’t dry out. All I did was then place the limbs on the table and robotic tendril like arms came out and put the robot together again and filled it up with the important liquids it needed. In a jolt it came to life, sat up with unblinking eyes, walked over to what looked like just another piece of the wall, but when he touched it there was a purple glow around his hand and a concealed door opened in the wall, the woman that was trapped behind the window came running out and thanked me, she told me her name is Zoe, she also told me that she worked at this facility as a programmer, according to her, back in their heyday, she made a demo for the new Atari computers that would hold subliminal messages that would increase the cravings in the customer for their new products, but that it would adapt so that the messages would be different from person to person, however something went wrong with the program when they tested it in the 80s and the program would act more like a computer virus and jump from one machine to another adapting and mutating to its new environment, making you see what it wanted you to see, so they had to cover everything up and bury all their things in the desert so that nobody would ever find it again. And that sent a chill down my spine, because stupidly enough when I read the roms, the computer was hooked up to the internet, I told Zoe about it, but all she said was “I know” and hit me right in the head with a hammer.. and everything went black.. Everything was dark when I woke up again, nothing looked the same as it did, more than that the rooms looked similar, except rotten and run down, the wood paneling was peeling and moldy, there was graffiti on the walls.. and is that… brain matter and blood smeared on the wallpaper ? Somehow seeing all this made a smile grow on my face and I started to laugh, hysterically, like one of those laughs that you can barely control, almost like I wasn’t even in control over my own body anymore, like all my limbs weren’t my own. With a tremendous amount of willpower though I was able to start moving my feet, it was more like dragging them though, but I decided it was best if I headed back to the main lobby to get out of here, the thing is though what I just saw in the lobby was a pretty sight, rotting carpet, blood, intestines and mold mixed everywhere, in a way that’s kinda funny, or at least that’s what Zoe keeps saying, she’s making me laugh at the dismembered corpses that was sitting in the chairs and sofas… I poked one right in the eye, he didn’t move and was definitely human, I giggled at it for a second, before I could focus and remember what I needed to do. Giggling to myself I dragged my feet over to the door and tried the handle, of course it was locked, so now it seems like I’m stuck in here, my phone battery is running low, and the only company I have here is Zoe, I can’t see her but I hear her, she’s telling me to have fun, to rip everyone’s eyes out, to split everyone’s brains open and to paint the walls beautiful with blood and guts.. oh and Zoe wants to tell you guys on here something, “you will get a new best friend too”

2023.03.30 11:50 Created_By_The_LoopWhat do these signs from the universe mean?
My boyfriend and I are looking at apartments to move quickly into because our landlord wants to evict us so the first apartment we come across a nice painting of Wizard of Oz and it has the yellow brick road on it and her red shoes, The second house I found a little toy ghost with a goofy face and a heads up penny which I know is supposed to be good luck.
2023.03.30 11:42 howcanibehomophobic1I (29M) just met my soulmate (24F) after months of no contact. The good, bad, and the ugly from the meeting.
Wow. I just met the love of my life right now. After being apart for so long, we finally met. It was all I thought it’d be. I am so in love. Ugh. This happened an hour ago. I just got home. Context: for reasons out of our control, we don’t end up together in this lifetime. We accept it. We’ll have to end things sooner or later.
The good:
the magic was easy.
• It felt comfortable. • I kissed her!!!!!!! • we embraced for a while • her smile is as majestic as ever • she loved the flowers I got her • she machine gun kissed my face • it was effortless.
The bad:
• she looked a little uncomfortable. I think something has changed for her. • I looked like shit because I wasn’t expecting to see her • she didn’t reply to my I love you • too many people, couldn’t hold her or kiss her for too long • her nails looked like shit, weird color • she mayyyy have felt bad about a comment I made about her hair.
The ugly:
• she wore denims. • I think she doesn’t feel what I feel • her heart isn’t here, I think. • I think the expiry date hits sooner than I thought it would. She wasn’t the same, something felt off. I think she’ll call it off soon.
This is really annoying, I know I've been in the right menu to change, but now I can't find it. I wish to load the subtitles by default. I know I have to change the setting on android/chromecast, on my screen with the menus there. I have disabled this since I don't want to load the subs for English shows/movies, but now I'm watching a Korean show, and I wish to switch them back on. First I had to change the default media player from "automatically choose" to LibVLC, this I did in the home page of Jellyfin by clicking the sprocket/gear symbol under the playback menu. Otherwise it would fail to load. In the same menu, there is a section for subtitles, but this is only the appearance, size, background, color, etc. I know there is somewhere to change the default behavior, I've seen it and changed it before. From what I've read here on reddit, it should be under users. But where do I go to set it? If I click the image of two people in the upper right corner, I can change the account, but not the settings. In the library (shows) , the gear symbol allows me to change the display preferences of the view. Not playback. Please, I need very specific instructions here. What icon do I need to click, what menu, where is it?

2023.03.30 11:19 ABlueEagle11Rules for the Sterling Void: The Valley of Gods and Monsters
You need a change. You need some excitement. Your life feels like it’s been mis-sold to you. Damaged goods that you’re desperate to return, but sadly, you were born out of warranty. You hate your job. You hate your home. You don’t have any family or friends that you feel you can connect to. Student loans, mortgages, bills overdue. You left your dreams to gather dust and crumble like some ancient artifacts in a museum’s stock room. When did it all go so wrong? Nothing has turned out the way you hoped it would when you were a kid. It’s all just been a series of compounding mistakes. Why did nobody tell you, after a certain point that life just seems to get worse and worse? It’s not that you want to die. No, that isn’t it at all. You want another throw of the dice. You want to start again, at a different place, in a different time. You want to go somewhere where you can begin anew, with a completely clean slate. That’s when you first hear about the Sterling Void: The Valley of Gods and Monsters. A mysterious valley that was said to be home to powerful gods and terrifying monsters. Despite the warnings of the locals, you just cannot resist the allure of the unknown and decided to seek out the valley. After many days of arduous travel through rugged terrain, you finally find yourself at the entrance to the valley. There, you see a sign with a seemingly otherworldly language that makes you uneasy and a lectern with a blue scroll on top of it, a sense of dread washes over you and, just as you take a step forward, it hits you, literally, a note hits you in the face, it contains a set of petrifying, but your curiosity gets the better of you. You take a deep breath and step into the valley, fully unaware of the horrors that awaited you. As you walk further into the valley, the you begin to notice strange things. The colours of the plants and rocks seem to shift and change, and the sky above you is a deep shade of purple. You hear whispers in your ear, but when you turn around, no one’s there. Suddenly, you feel a tug at your feet and look down to see tendrils of mist wrapping around your ankles, pulling youdown. You tried to fight it, but it’s no use. You are dragged down into the mist, and when you finally emerge, you find yourself in a completely different world. The sky is a shade of silver, and the ground beneath you is made of shimmering white crystals. The air is thick with the scent of burning incense and the sense of unbelievable petrifying dread, and you can hear chanting in the distance. This is the Sterling Void, explorer and the you are now trapped there, but you wanted this and you are to blame. You knew that you had to follow the rules if they wanted to survive in this strange and dangerous place. And so, begins your journey through the Valley of Gods and Monsters, where you might face unimaginable horrors yet discover incredible secrets that may change your life forever. Take a deep breath, adventurer, and savor the scents of burning incense and warm air. Listen closely to the wyverns chirping, inviting you to join them in eternal flight. But beware the staring imps, giants, ogres and griffins, ready to pounce at any moment. An insolent stare and you’ll be in their grasp, a glob of flesh. Remember the note you found, its warning ringing in your mind: 'Follow the rules or perish.' You shudder at the thought, but you're determined to make it through the Valley alive. You pull out the crumpled note as a reminder and steel yourself for the journey ahead. Rule #1: Do not look at the gods or monsters, some of them are incomprehensible to humans in their "natural form" and, their mere presence can drive a person insane. Although it's not the case for all of them, it's better to be safe than sorry. Rule #2: Make as little noise as possible. The gods and monsters can hear even the slightest sound and, if you're too obnoxious or, noisy, you might be stripped of your soul. Rule #3: Do not touch objects that look "out of place". The objects in the valley are cursed and can bring forth unspeakable horrors. Rule #4: Only eat fruits and vegetables, as they are provided abundantly by the plants. Do not harm any animals unless they attack you first, as they are protected by divine grace. However, if the elementals or gods provide you with meat, you may eat it. It is important to follow the rules of supernatural hospitality and show gratitude for their generosity. Breaking this rule will result in severe consequences and you will forfeit the right to your soul and flesh, as it is a sign of disrespect towards the beings that have granted you protection and shelter. Remember, survival is possible without meat, but it is impossible without the protection of the elementals and gods. Rule #5: Do not breathe in the mist. The mist in the valley can cause one to hallucinate and lose their sense of reality. Rule #6: Do not touch the water unless it is orange in color. The water in the valley is cursed, and those who drink from it will suffer a fate worse than death. If the water is orange in color, feel free to drink it, it is called "gilded water" by some and, has regenerative abilities. Rule #7: Do not make eye contact with the statues. The statues in the valley are cursed, and those who look into their eyes will be trapped in a never-ending nightmare. Rule #8: Do not trust your senses. The valley can play tricks on your mind, and what you see may not be real. Rule #9: Do not speak to anyone . The valley is home to creatures that can mimic human voices, but they are not to be trusted. Rule #10: Do not try to actively leave the valley. The gods and monsters will not let anyone escape easily.. Rule #11: Do not use any form of light. The creatures in the valley are attracted to it and will hunt those who use it. Rule #12: Do not step on any cracks. The valley is cursed, and those who break the natural order will suffer dire consequences. Rule #13: Do not open any doors. The doors in the valley lead to places best left unexplored although not a guaranteed death sentence, it is a risky endeavour. Rule #13: Do not listen to the rules that start with a capital letter. Rule #14: Do not climb any trees. The trees in the valley are alive, and those who climb them will become trapped. Rule #15: Do not use any form of technology. The valley is a place of ancient magic, and technology will only anger the gods and monsters. Rule #16: Do not pick any flowers unless they're orange, pink or red. Most flowers in the valley are cursed, and those who touch them will suffer a fate worse than death. Rule #17: Do not enter any caves. The caves in the valley are home to creatures best left undiscovered. Rule #18: Do not follow any "weird" sounds. The sounds in the valley are often a trap set by the creatures that inhabit it. Rule #19: Do not stay in one place for too long. The creatures in the valley will track and hunt those who remain in one spot. Rule #20: Do not attempt to communicate with the gods or monsters. They will not listen, and attempting to do so will only anger them. Rule #21: Do not forget the rules. Forgetting even one of the rules can lead to a fate worse than death. Rule #22: Do not walk in patterns, it can draw unwanted attention. Rule #23: Do not look at the sky, the sky looks like it’s made of silver alloys and, it is utterly incomprehensible to humans because of how “perfect” it is. And, can drive them insane, it is called the “sterling void” for a reason Rule #24: If you see wooden signs or, milestones, do not read them or look at them for too long, they are memetic hazards. Rule #25: If you see a loved one or, an object that you cherished but, lost, you are in a different plane of reality. The beings in this reality will try to convince you that you are home, and that everything is back to normal. They will try to keep you there, so be careful not to let your guard down. If you stay too long, you may forget who you really are and become trapped in this false reality forever. Keep in mind that even though the beings in this reality may look like your loved ones or your cherished objects, they are not the same entities and cannot be trusted. Stay alert and focused on finding a way back to your own reality. Look for blue-colored entrances and, exits for they are the only way out. Rule #26: If you find scrolls, pick them up, they're going to be useful. Unless they're black in which case, they're best avoided as they're memetic hazards. And just as you put the note back in your pocket, you remember the blue scroll, you take it out. It reads "The Nameless One is a fearsome creature that roams the deepest and darkest corners of the Valley of Gods and Monsters. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, and its true name is lost to the ages, but one thing is certain: it is a force to be reckoned with. Towering over its prey, the Nameless One is covered in an impenetrable layer of obsidian armor, and wields a massive hammer that can crush even the strongest of warriors. Its eyes glow with an otherworldly light, and its roar can shatter the very ground beneath your feet. Few have dared to face the Nameless One and lived to tell the tale, but those who have speak of a creature that is relentless, cunning, and utterly without mercy. If you ever find yourself face to face with the Nameless One, pray that you have the strength, the skill, and the luck to survive its wrath. If you see any of his minions, you will know. Stay away from them, if you harm them, you will anger the Nameless one. And don't fall asleep out in the open unless you want to become food for his minions Remember, these rules are not to be taken lightly. They're more than just words on a piece of paper. They're like the Nameless One's eldritch serpentine minions, crawling underneath your skin, snaking through your blood and flesh, like a caterpillar playing host to thousands of wasp larvae. Although you may feel weakened, tired and disoriented, it's crucial to push through. Shake off the feeling and continue with unwavering determination. Your survival hinges on your ability to persevere. And, do keep in mind that sometimes you might have to violate these rules but, only when a non-black scroll or, a God asks you to do so. You will know when you have to." You keep exploring. A voice in the back of your brain keeps chanting "Don’t fall asleep" as you walk. You keep exploring.
Slack. The loss of the elastic tissue (elastin and collagen) in the skin with age causes your skin to become slack and hang loosely.
Transparent. This is caused by thinning of the epidermis (surface layer of the skin) and dermis (deeper layer of the skin).
Fragile. Increased skin fragility is caused by flattening of the area where the epidermis and dermis (layer of skin under the epidermis) come together.
More easily bruised. This is caused by thinner blood vessel walls.
More prone to developing skin lesions, such as non-cancerous (benign) tumors.
What below-the-skin changes cause the aging seen in the face?
Loss of fat below the skin (or what dermatologists call the subcutaneous layer) in your cheeks, temples, chin, nose and eye area. This may result in loosening skin, sunken eyes and a “skeletal” appearance.
Bone loss may become evident after age 50 and cause slack skin and puckering of the skin around your mouth.
Cartilage loss in the nose causes drooping of the nasal tip and makes the bony structures in the nose easier to see.
What are the Ways to Reduce Premature Skin Aging?
The sun plays a major role in prematurely aging our skin. Other things that we do also can age our skin more quickly than it naturally would. To help their patients prevent premature skin aging, dermatologists offer their patients the following tips.
1. Protect your skin from the sun every day.
Apply a protection from SU Shield. This tinted barrier cream provides a physical block for environmental protection with Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide. SuShield holds in the skin’s natural moisture without irritation, chemicals, or alcohol irritation. With its natural tinting properties, this cream will give skin a sheer hint of color, without leaving a greasy residue!
2. Apply self-tanner rather than get a tan.
3. If you smoke, stop.
4. Avoid repetitive facial expressions.
5. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.
6. Drink less alcohol.
7. Exercise most days of the week.
8. Cleanse your skin gently.
SU Skin Foaming gel-based cleanser that contains light Alpha Hydroxy Acids for gentle exfoliation. Derma Clear removes oil, makeup, and cellular debris with anti-microbial ingredients such as Aloe, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Green Tea. Leave your skin feeling fresh and clean while maintaining balance.
9. Wash your face twice a day and after sweating heavily.
10. Apply a facial moisturizer every day.
Moisturizer traps water in our skin, giving it a more youthful appearance. A liquid infusion of Cucumber, Honey, Hyaluronic Acid, Borage Seed Oil, and more, all blended with deuterium oxide (“heavy water”). This heavy water is natural and has a ‘wetter than water’ hydration activity. The O2 Mist will replenish lost moisture and oxygen in our skin and unlike repeat applications of moisturizer, a mist wont mess up your makeup! Use anytime daily under or over makeup to refresh. Great for post-treatment in sensitive dehydrated skin. Give your skin the drink it needs anytime you need it!
11. Apply Retinol.
Speed up your cellular turnover for skin clarity and firmness. SU Skin 4% Retinol & Vitamin A propionate reduces fine lines and wrinkles, by increasing the production of collagen. This combination serum for Antiaging & Acne also stimulates the production of new blood vessels, improving skin tone and texture. Additional benefits include softening and fading age spots, minimizing pores, and reducing oil production. Use as PM as tolerated or to spot treat as needed for breakouts. Wake up to smooth, healthy new skin.
12. Apply Eye Cream.
Enlighten your eye area with this firming, brightening eye cream. Powerful ingredients such as Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Avocado Oil, Vitamin E, Black Willow Bark, Neem Oil, and Rosemary will help soften deep lines and plump furrows. Bright Eyes reduces the appearances of crepey-darkening skin around the eye area with continued use
2023.03.30 11:15 JackMiller_11Weirdest, buggy crash?! Blender crashes when rendering an images with only 1 channel.
I have a really weird crashing behavior when rendering with Eevee in Blender. If any material in my scene has an image texture plugged in, and that image only has 1 channel (grayscale), as opposed to 3 channels (rgb), blender will crash when rendering or going into material preview (eevee). I've tried to recreate it on some of my friends computers but it doesn't happen on thiers. We use the same version of blender, the only difference is I have an AMD graphics card and they have Nvidia. I'm curious if any of you can recreate this crash? I use Photoshop to change the Image Mode to Grayscale, removing any color channels and saving the image out with only 1 channel. All I do is to consistently recreate the crash is this: - Open a new empty scene - Apply a new Principle BSDF material to the cube - Add an image texture that only has 1 channel to the material (diffuse, roughness, anywhere is good) - Go into Material Preview in the viewport shading OR render out using Eevee. - Crash! (Rendering with Cycles works fine.) Things I've tried with no improvement (still crash!): - Changing the image space to Linear, sRGB, non-color. - Add a "Seperate Color" node and a "Combine Color" node after the image to maybe force 3 channels. - Fresh new scene, fresh new material, fresh new object, blender re-install, updated graphics driver, updated OS. I can work around the problem as long as I make sure all images have 3 channels, but this can be a pretty big hassle on larger scenes, with different assets from all around the web. I'm very interested if you guys can recreate this crash or have any theories. Thanks!

Just dont buy the skin.I am just as dissapointed as you, from belegar not being an iron breaker skin, battle wizard getting yet another skin while pyro is kinda left out while it is also almost impossible to see it is meant to be thyrus, battlepriest seeming to have colors that have 0 corellation to luthor huss all the way to even the very well looking Louen Leonouer skin having no moustache ... boy they did that skin dirty with a simple decision ... moustaches do make a man... where were we?Ah yes, just do not buy any of them, i saw people get nasty on some forums but thats not the way, just speak the way that is noticable and sensible, write maybe why you wont buy them, name specifics! To me, belegar is the worst skin in the whole line, gear looks wrong, wrong class, wrong beard color, even the wrong shades of colors, tho that is very debatable as to what their canon shades were tbf! https://preview.redd.it/j4whos9scuqa1.png?width=614&format=png&auto=webp&s=d99082d0fda2634884776a04be4e813dcc1542d1

We went out. Me, Jackie, Ron, Nazz and Mike. I didn’t really feel like going but due to social pressure and all that, I went with it. And they kinda decided to kidnap me, telling my mom that I needed to relax before the finals, and she agreed … idiot. There was a big carnival going on, roller coasters, cotton candy, fucking clowns for some reason, and all those 1960's creepy-ass games. I didn't get the clowns though, but God forbid I had a good night. Jackie was kind of a sugar junkie, and she liked to do her puppy eyes on me to buy her sweets in College and in general, but I guess I also needed a bit of energy so we went to buy enough garbage food for the group and then, Mike started screaming like an idiot, he had beat the record for the hammer game, gave him enough tickets to buy some sword, looked like a gladiator type but I couldn’t bother to pay attention. After all that Ron wanted to go on a ride in the roller coaster, I immediately said no, I wasn't about to shit my pants in front of all these idiots, so they handed me their stuff and went. A tall, old man approached me, hunched over, but still handsome, white hair, all combed back, comically well dressed for someone walking around in a carnival, like he was going to attend the Oscars or something. He asked me why I didn't go with my friends… I felt a bit awkward… so, I just said that I didn’t felt like going. He then said that I should enjoy life, because once I get old like him, I might not get the chance, and went off… as he went, I noticed that he had a wedding ring. I went to him as he was walking away and asked him if he was alone. He looked at his ring and chuckled, “That obvious huh”, I stressfully apologized and tried to laugh it off, but chocked on my soda like a moron. He smiled and said that his wife had passed away a long time ago, he liked to come to the carnival because they used to do that together … " Beats sittin' at home darling” …he laughed, he again told me to not be so serious and enjoy life more before going away. Mike made the usual “is that your boyfriend” joke and since I ignored him, we moved on. There was a stand that served beers and some salty snacks, I said I would buy a few rounds for the group and they looked at me like I had shit in my face or something, when I faked backing out they ran to the stand, with Jackie kissing me in the cheek for "embracing the chill". I couldn't even say how many did we drink, but enough to take a unanimous vote that Ron wasn't allowed to drive us home and since I drank the least, I was the newly designated driver. Everybody was singing and behaving like a child, and for the first time in a while, I felt happy, with those idiots making all sorts of noise, I was driving slowly because I was a bit tipsy, the main road was blocked, Ron had brought us through the long road that connected the county and the forest. The thing was, the road was dark, Ron told me to boot the fog lights and floor it since there were no real turns, and we would pass both the forest and reach the county quickly, so I did it. 15 minutes into the forest I saw a figure, thinking it was an animal I honked the horn, with the idiots imitating the noise each time I honked it. My guess was, either it jumped onto the car or I had lost depth perception because I didn't have any time to react before hitting whatever was in front of us. I promptly stopped the car, yelling and panicking, Ron and Mike tried to calm us down, but I panicked, even more, when I realized … I had run over the old man that spoke to me at the carnival, he wasn't breathing. His neck was broken, his face was all open and bloodied from dragging in the cement, and his chin was poking his upper back, there was no way to save him, so I pulled out my phone to call the police when he coughed, Mike took my phone… I looked back, Ron was comforting Jackie, she was crying and screaming hysterically. I approach the body there was blood splashed all over the floor, but something wasn’t right. I heard him coughing and I stared at the old man for what it felt like five minutes… no breathing or reacting at all, he looked like roadkill. I started to panic looking at the body when Mike came to me saying to dump the body in the forest and get the hell out of there. I couldn’t think properly, I was in shock, so I did as he said. I had a big blanket in Mike’s car, so I just ran to get it. We start wrapping the body and we threw it deep inside the forest. We heard the body hitting the floor and rolling downhill, when we finally heard a splash, immediately Mike screamed at me “Let’s go! Get in the fucking car come on!”. We got in the car and Jackie was surprisingly asleep, she was a weak drinker, after all, she must’ve passed out. Nazz started asking questions about what happened and why it took so long, I couldn’t explain anything, I was so nervous that I couldn’t form a godman sentence, Mike simply said that it was taken care of and not to worry, but kept she pressuring, telling that we fucked up and stressing. I abruptly stopped the car and yell at her “what the fuck did you want us to do?! You wanna go to jail and spend the rest of your life in there?! Huh?!”, she just looked at me scared of my reaction, I turned around and started driving again. The atmosphere was heavy, everyone was quiet until we reached our city area, since there were a lot of people, due to the festivities, we had to blend in and pretend that we didn't just murder an old widow and dumped his body in a pool of shitty water. So, we decided to stay in a bar near my house to try and not attract the wrong kind of attention. Jackie was the last one to get out of the car, she had a massive headache, and was kind of falling over, Ron went to help her as she leaned herself into the car with her left hand, and I realized that part of the car had blood stains from the collision. I grabbed my beer and walked over to the car, splashed some on to the stain and wiped it with my jacket, and threw it inside the car. Ron asked me where my jacket was, it was cold and I was clearly freezing, but I shrugged it off saying that I felt hot and got back inside the bar. It was around 1:30 am so Mike decided that it was time for the girls to go home, which was fine by me since I didn't want to go out in the first place. I obviously refused to drive so Mike took us home, he wanted to take Jackie and Nazz to their respective houses, but Ron had the idea to send them to sleep in my house instead, since we were approaching the finals, "girls’ sleepover would be something nice for you girls to relax" he said. I didn’t say anything because the idea was for an obvious reason, so Mike and Ron went on wherever, and the girls stayed at my house for the night. Mike then texted me saying to “Forget the whole night and delete this text, night girls”, I deleted the text without answering him. During the night I woke up, usually, I hear my mom waking up around 5:00 or 05:30 am, but today there was no movement, so I went down to the kitchen. The old man's image was still fresh in my head. I sat down in the kitchen with the lights off with a soda when I felt something heavy hovering over me like a someone was behind me, my heart started pumping fast and all my body wanted to jerk off the sensation of being watched, but I calmed down and turned over… the fucking fridge was open, the cold breeze was going off. Fucking fridge was making get high blood pressure, shit. I closed it and right after I looked at the back door for no reason … I felt death looking at me, I didn’t know what it was, I just couldn’t move …There was somebody outside, whatever it was, it was tall, crouching down and with one hand on the blurred window, the worst of it was the eyes, I don't know-how in the godly fuck I could see those white, blue-ish dead eyes and then …a grin started to appear, a big smile, it was the size of my face, I wanted to leave but I was too afraid that if I moved, whatever that was, was going to come inside. My mom turned on the lights and saw me, just standing there, asking me why I was holding the fridge door open, I looked at her, "You look like you've seen a ghost, what's going on honey?!" she asked worriedly. I looked back at the door and just saw the moon reflection there… probably shouldn’t have drank that fucking soda. I got back to my room again and tried to fall asleep, my anxiety kicked in, I felt like I was being watched, I was laying down in the middle of both those crying idiots, both were in a deep sleep, I don't know, how but whatever. I texted Mike explaining what happened and he answered almost immediately. I wasn’t expecting him to answer so fast because was too early and he would be asleep, fucker drank enough for the entire group. I unlocked my phone to check the text, and something was off, I sent a fucking texted explaining everything that happened, detail by detail, and he asked me, “Did you find my ring?”. What did he mean by this, I didn’t understand. So, I called him asking why he had texted me that, but apparently, he didn’t know what I was talking about, and his voice sounded like he had just woken up. I told him about the text he sent me, and he said he didn't send anything, he was sleeping. I didn't know what to say so I just hang up the phone and when I got back to the conversation the text wasn’t in my inbox. I felt shivers in my entire body and suddenly a water droplet fell in my face, I was like, what the hell?! Then another drop, and another, I was so confused so ... I looked up to the ceiling I saw it again … looking at me, those eyes were... haunting… both looked like they were washed with bleach but retained some of its blue color and then buried into its skull, I couldn’t make anything of its body, it was darker than the darkness of the room, but it occupied a good portion of the ceiling. I couldn’t move, I tried to scream but it felt like I was detached from my own body, so I just stood on top of the bed when it grabbed my head. Suddenly I woke up. Jackie and Nazz woke me up both with a terrified face, I was sweating, standing up in the bed, still in the middle of both with my head towards the ceiling the whole time. I just jumped down without saying a word and went to the bathroom. I looked in the mirror, asking myself “what the fuck was that? What was all that!” I couldn’t stop asking myself the same question. I panicked, I needed to scream or cry, I felt this horrible heat inside my throat, and I couldn’t stop shaking. I went to the kitchen and my mom was there, she had stayed home because it started to snow and there was no way for her to go to work. I asked her if she remembered seeing me by the fridge last night, she said that yes but that I was probably sleep-walking. I thought that maybe I was too stressed out from the finals, I had stopped the medication so I could focus more but apparently, it wasn't a good idea. The girls eventually fell asleep after my mom told them that I usually sleepwalk. Around 1:30 pm everybody was up, I was already in the living room trying to understand the whole event of last night, I was like in a paralysis state, reliving the accident, Mike yelling at me, the girls panicking, the old man's broken body, the whatever the fuck it was outside the kitchen door last night, everything. The TV was on, but it was distant, I couldn't really hear anything until they came down, my mom came back from the grocery store at the same time. Nazz asked me if I was ok, she knew that I was having a hard time sleeping and according to Jackie I looked like a corpse…. Jackie didn’t seem to remember the accident, she’s a light drinker and had overdone it last night so Nazz told me to just try and forget what happened, there was nothing else that could've been done. She was right, I couldn't let myself fall back to my old habits, I was finally doing great in school, high grades and all that stuff that made my mom proud, and she kinda needed that. Looking back, I now realized I wasted my time acting like a moron after Dad died, it became much easier when I began to get along with my mom. I had little to no sleep because as soon as she got in the house, it was sitting on the small couch, hugging my knees looking at her with a dumb smile on my face. She smiled back saying that I need to sleep and carried on to the kitchen. I told the girls to feel at home, I just needed to take a power nap, so I went back upstairs, and I guess the warm sun was enough to make me fall asleep. Suddenly I woke up and it was almost nighttime, the feeling of being watched came back so I jogged downstairs, the girls were watching TV and my mom was on her laptop when someone rang the doorbell. Two police officers at the door, my heart pumped so much blood it hurt, Nazz chocked on her food. My mom got up and joined me at the door greeting the officers and asking them what the problem was, the whole time I just stood there, eyes wide open, waiting to be arrested for what I did. The officers just told us about an old man that’s missing for a day, according to them, he had a routine and the person usually drops food for him every day said that the house was empty, which was weird because since his wife died, he would never leave the house during the day, he would always wait for noon or night to go on walks and this was an on-going thing for the past 9 years. At this point I'm holding my tears and fear with a somewhat surprised face and asked them if they know anything about his whereabouts, to which they say no, that’s why they’re here, to let everybody know about the situation and to report if they see something. My eyes drifted from the officers and I see a bunch of police cars in the neighborhood, other policemen were talking to everybody else. The county was going to start a rescue mission for this old man. Mike texted me, asking if we could meet at the bar again, I said yes and told the girls to dress up, mom asked me to bring some milk on the way back. So, we went, I drove slowly the whole time to look around and understand the situation, everybody was hanging up signs, talking to the cops that were still patrolling the streets. Jackie asked us what was going on, Nazz told her that some guy left town and he had some debt or something, just to brush it off due to my reaction. We arrived at the bar, the girls got out before I parked the car and saw the boys, so they went towards them. I turned off the car and was adjusting the rearview mirrors from my side and the one inside the car respectively, when I looked into the inside one, I saw it, the same blue eyes, the same grin, only this time, he was outside the car, I could see his face. His bloated black skin, covered with bite marks and blisters, his eyes, veiny and wide open with no visible eyelids, his teeth were long, no gaps, all of them the same, no canines or anything, white, so white that looked like they were a light source somehow. It got up, leaning itself in the truck of the car, its arm was the same length as my whole body, with long, skinny fingers, missing the ring finger in its left hand. I started crying silently. I was going to die, that thing was going to eat me alive. Ron threw a beer can at my car, startling me, “Come on!” he yelled, I wave at them smiling, cleaning my face while looking that the mirror again, seeing nothing, I was going insane, that was the only explanation. We went inside, the bar was moderately full that night, probably a football game or something useless that these people liked to scream at. Ron and the girls went to get food while Mike and I found a table big enough for all of us, I then asked if the police went to his house and he said no … Detective Steve went there, apparently, the Detective was on to him for a while, Ron overhead this and chimed in, the girls also sat down with enough French fries for a football team and 8 cheeseburgers. He explained that a few weeks ago Mike and him, got into a fight with some guys inside a liquor store, and Mike broke one the guy’s neck by elbowing him square in the jaw. We stood there looking at him with the “mother look” while he ate the one the burgers. Ron then said that the guy nearly died in not for himself kinda forcing the neck back in place while his friend ran from the store, they both got arrested but Mike was the one that got on the record, so Steve was kinda onto him since then because his attitude while inside the precinct hadn’t been the best as well. Mike simply said, “I regret nothing” and kept eating, we shrugged off because that was Mike’s typical behavior. We stayed the rest of the night, watching the guys and the rest of the people yelling at the TV because their team lost, making fun of them and talking about everything. Around 1 a.m. my mom texted saying that she was going to meet a friend and going away for the weekend, there was enough food at the house, and told me to be careful. I texted the smirk face emoji and told her to have fun, which made me even happier because she was trying to move on. So, we decided to go back home as well around that time, Ron was driving, we planned to go to my house since my mom wasn’t there and spend the rest of the night there. The main road was apparently fixed during the week, which was funny because when we got there, there were three cop cars, a fire truck, an ambulance, and three wrecked cars. We slowed down and Ron asked the officers what had happened, one of the officers said that there was an accident we had bears around, there was a deer carcass in the middle of the road. I honestly didn't think about it too much until Nazz pointed out that the carcass was way too mangled, and it looked fresh, which made me look over. Fucking. Disgusting. I've never seen that shit in real life, didn't want to anyway. It was a big deer, probably male since it had the massive horns, I'm not a deer specialist so I don't fucking care. It was a mess, its horns were broken and were inside its stomach like something broke them and use them to stab the animal with them, there were slashes all over its body, deep slashes, something I doubt a bear would do to a deer for no reason. Its torso had holes like something punched it until the bones and skin gave out and got pierced over and over, the eyes were gone, so was its tongue and lower jaw. Ron pointed out to the officer that the deer wasn’t eaten, at least not as it should, he said that its body mass, the muscle was mangled but intact, there were no bite or tear stress marks on the flesh beside the slashes, the officer took a closer look and realized that he was right, so he called for backup and told us to go home. Jackie, being the idiot that she was, took some photos of the deer during the time that Ron was talking to the officer. She likes that stupid gross stuff. Mike was uncharacteristically quiet, I asked him what was with him, he didn't answer as he had just flat out ignored me. Nazz brought him to reality, he then smiled at us and changed the subject by asking how long we were from my house…” I need to take a massive shit”, his words … dick. We arrived 15 to 20 minutes later, my front door was open, Mike immediately got out of the car and pulled out a fucking Desert Eagle, we freaked out, Ron asked him was the fuck was he doing, and he pointed the gun at us and told us to lock the car door, I got scared because Mike was scared, I'm talking about a guy that once beat the shit out of a man twice his size over some food, now is scared shitless over an open door. He got in, Ron told us to stay put and Nazz to have her phone ready to call the police, I texted my mom asking her if she forgot to close the front door, she didn't answer, which is to be expected. She wasn’t in, that much I knew. Suddenly I got a feeling of dread, I had a vision that Mike was going to die inside, I looked that that car door and Ron didn’t manage to lock it so I got out, with the girls yelling at me to come back, I think Ron came after me as well. I got inside the house, Mike was there, bend over backward, like his back was going to break, the same "thing" I saw a few days ago, grabbing him by the face and bending his back backward, but he wasn't reacting, his eyes were white, he was drooling, and it looked like he was dead. The thing then looked up, I couldn't see it, just it's white-bleached eyes, then this grin started to shine, its big teeth, that disgusting smile, as wide as an arm. The thing grabbed Mike’s hand, the one that had the gun, and while smiling, with the gun upside down, and then shot, at first I thought It had aimed at Ron, but he started panicking, took off his jacket and pressed it against my shoulder, I couldn't understand why, I felt a burn on my neck, so I coughed, I coughed blood, Mike shot me, that thing made Mike shoot me. I felt sleepy, Ron's voice was getting more far and far away, I could hear Nazz and Jackie crying and screaming, but I was getting too far away, I couldn’t maintain myself awake for some reason. I woke up in the hospital, my mom was next to me crying and smiling, I wanted to ask where everybody was, but my voice wasn’t coming out, my neck felt like it was going to burst, I coughed again. My mom told me what happened, that Mike was drunk and got violent against us and shot me out of anger, he was detained, Ron, Jackie, and Nazz were being questioned for more details. The messed-up part in all of this is that my mom saw my confused expression, but I couldn’t talk, Mike was innocent, but the how fuck would I explain what I saw, what I’ve been seeing. So, I just started to cry, angrily, Mike tried to defend all of us, and he was being accused of something he didn’t do. So I got up, wasn't a good idea since apparently, I had lost a lot of blood, the butterfly that was hooked to my hand was ripped when I fell, ripping a bit of my skin too which my mom panicked and tried to help me up. The whole commotion made the nurses come in to help me up, and detective Steve followed after, he waited until the nurses patched my hand up, and stabilized me, he stood there, the entire time, just looking at me with a stern, almost angry look, not moving, not a single word. After the nurses were done, he politely asked them to leave for a while, and even my mom, I grabbed her hand, I was afraid of him, I didn't trust the guy, he looked like an average beer belly uncle that gets too comfortable around minors. Mom said to relax, she would be outside if I needed anything, I pointed at my neck, making a "resting bitch" face, to which she said jokingly "You know what I mean honey", kissed my forehead, and left. Detective Steve kept looking at me, he said that it wouldn’t take long, and he would let me rest, he grabbed a chair and moved closer to me, sat down, and handed me over a pen and notebook, he knew that I couldn't talk so he told me to write simple answers to be quick. He asked me if we had any alcohol or drugs before going home. “No”. I wrote. Next was if we had any recent problems or events that might have pressed Mike to become violent in some way. “No," I wrote again, but I hesitated, and that hesitation was enough for him to put his hand on top of mine, and he told me not to hide anything, that if Mike was my friend, he wouldn't shoot me. The fucking nerve on that guy… I moved my hand away, he apologized and told me to rest and left, I managed to get up, grabbing everything that I could to avoid falling, and managed to reach my bag to get my phone, I texted Nazz asking “What the fuck is going on?”. She immediately called me. I refused the call and told her I couldn't talk, my neck was sore, so she explains through audio that they were interrogated by the cops, trying to know why Mike had tried to kill me, and I'm there like… what did she mean by "tried to kill?". I got dressed, mom came in asking me why I was dressed, I should stay in the hospital, so I showed her the texts with Nazz and wrote that they were wrong. The cops stopped us; they didn't want me to leave the hospital for some reason. At this point I was fuming, fucking bastards weren't explaining anything, so I went back to the room and went straight to the bathroom and video called Nazz but kept texting, I was using earphones because I was sure that the room was bugged or something. Ron answered this time, the three of them were together coming to see me, I wrote that they probably wouldn’t be able to see me, there was police inside and they didn’t let me out. I asked them what had happened with Mike, the girls wouldn't answer so I wrote again in all caps, don't know why, so Ron, again, explained that Mike was detained and probably was going to jail due to what he did to me. To which I asked Ron what did he meant, he saw the same thing as I did, Mike was being grabbed, “And how are we going to explain that to the cops or your mom?”. That question was calming and alarming at the same time, I wasn’t crazy, Ron saw the same creature I did but he was right, how were we supposed to explain what made Mike shoot me. So, we just decided to let it go, for the time being, Ron said that Mike was silent, he didn't say anything, he wasn't reacting, I said good, let him be quiet, it was better than him talking bullshit to make his situation even worse. I told them to stay together, I would probably be able to leave tomorrow, and we would meet up to talk this through. My bathroom door wasn’t fully closed, I felt someone watching me so looked up, there was a small gap between the door and the wall, with a blue eye and a grin looking in, and I immediately jumped off the toilet and kicked the door open, took me a few seconds to walk out and when I did I saw a frame of someone closing the room door, leaving the room, I tried to run but my legs decided that they needed a break and I fell on my face, the sudden bump against the floor made the air inside my lungs burst out thought my neck and mouth, it felt like my neck blew up, I coughed up more blood, couldn’t even breathe right and I guess my mom heard the bump and she came in, scolding me for trying to move around so soon. I asked her through the note that Detective Steve gave me if she saw someone coming out of the room, she said no, she was sitting next to the door and came in because she heard the bump. Great. I was discharged the next day morning, the guys were there, my mom drove all four of us to my house, Jackie and Nazz helped me inside while Ron helped my mom with some groceries, she had bought the day before apparently. Jackie sat down with me in the living room while Nazz went outside to help my mom and Ron outside. Jackie was down, really down, she had been crying for days, I could tell, she has big brown eyes, her eyelashes were so big that looked fake, a round face with big red cheeks, small pointy nose, and curly brown hair, all the way down to her ass, she looked like a doll, my “baby”, these past days had been a shit show, she hadn't been sleeping well, her dark circles tend to show up after a few days without sleeping, last year during the exams, she got so stressed that even her hair lost volume, she can't handle stress, I just kept looking at her and smiled, she's such a good friend that sometimes I ask myself how in the fuck does she put up with me. I guess me thinking about her while looking at her and smiling made her cry because I was honestly joyful, I had friends, good friends, she hugged me and I hugged back and placed her head onto my lap where she instantly fell asleep. Mom and Ron finished unpacking everything, and she told Ron and Nazz to relax and sit, she was going to try and clean the bloodstain and hopefully get it out, so Ron sat down, first time we saw each other after all that shit. Nazz sat down on the other side of the couch, next to Jackie’s feet. Nazz turned on the TV, we decided not to talk about the situation because my mom was behind us scrubbing the floor to clean my bloodstain. I got up slowly and left a pillow on Jackie’s head so she wouldn’t wake up and went to help her, she was crying, silently, while scrubbing the floor, I was surprised, I almost died, she was out, probably feeling like she wasn't able to protect me I bet. I grabbed a towel and threw it on top of the stain and reach out with my hand for her to get up and smiled, she cleared her tears and went to sit down with us, grabbing a nearby blanket to cover Jackie and watched the movie with us. It was around 4a.m, I dozed off. The usual tele sales were on, showing one of those devices that vibrate your abs while you're sitting down not doing what you're supposed to get said abs. My mom wasn't in the living room, the rest of the guys were sleeping, Ron was on the floor with his legs up the couch, Jackie hadn't moved from the same position that I left her, neither did Nazz…bitch was asleep sitting down. I left them there and went up the stairs to check on mom, it took me a few moments to gather up the energy and mental fortitude to go up the stairs, I felt like I got hit by a truck, but only on my neck but the pain had been spreading through my whole body, sleeping on the couch did not help. After what it felt like 3 years I managed to reach her room, I didn't realize that her boyfriend was sleeping beside her, when I was about to close the door when I heard a noise coming from the room, I couldn’t see well, it was dark so I looked inside to try and see if I could make something out of the darkness, as my eyes adjusted to the dark I noticed her boyfriend was moving a lot, he was trying to stretch his legs and it got into a point where it looked like he had something trying to break his body. His legs started to stretch out the bed, his feet became elongated, so did his arms, his whole body grew out like something was pulling it from his head, arms, and legs, I tried to warn my mom but at that exact moment he opened his eyes and looked directly at me, with white, blue' ish eyes but his face was still normal like he has asleep with his eyes open. I was mostly curious but still scared, I thought it was the meds plus me going up the stairs messed me up, maybe a sudden rush so I scratched my eyes and pressed them to move the blood to my head. I opened my eyes and saw It again, I stood there, holding the doorknob, locking eyes with it, it slowly started to show its grin, but it seemed different, only its face has black, the rest of the body was full of stretch marks, the ones that almost look that the skin is going to rip apart, but the skin color was intact. It got up on top of the bed slowly, its head was tilted to the side because of how tall it was. I didn't know what to do, I couldn't even mutter a single word or sound, I was afraid to run because that thing was standing in the bed with my mom beside it, I wasn't just gonna leave my mom there but I also was to chicken shit to get in. It started to move its left ring finger while it slightly opened its mouth, drooling, and let out a calming, slow, and low growl, and then it dawns on me… I panicked, the thing started to reach for my mom with the same finger and I had the idea to turn on the light. Mom woke up asking me if everything was ok, she was alone in the room, so I definitely needed to calm the fuck down. I nodded and turned off the light, closed the door, and as soon as I turned around, I felt a hot, disgusting breath on the right side of my face… I fully stopped moving, I peed myself, that thing was in my face, squatted down, grabbing my ear, smelling like a mix of rotten eggs, hot baby shit, and spoiled milk. I was trembling, crying, frozen, I didn't know what I should do and it drew its mouth closer to my ear and using its raspy, dry low voice, asked me a question that sent me into a panic attack… “Did you… find my ring?!” I kept looking forward, crying, realizing this thing was the old man, I closed my eyes, my guilt, anger, disgust came flowing through. Suddenly I heard a bunch of noise coming from downstairs, I heard Mike yelling at them to wake up and running up the stairs with a flashlight. They saw me standing there with the old man, or what was left of him crouching beside me, looking at them, always with the same smile. Mike yelled at me to move, which made my mom jump off the bed and storm out of the room with a gun herself when she saw it besides me, this time the old man slowly shifted his gaze to my mom, making her swallow her spit out of fear, she still shakingly pointed the gun at him, so did Mike. I closed my eyes again because nothing good was going to come out of it, so at this point, I was beginning to accept whatever was going to happen. The flashlight died, I could hear his growls, Jackie panicking while Nazz tried to calm her down, Mike scream at me and my mom to duck, he fired three shots around the area that he last saw it. Ron yelled at him to stop shooting and managed to find the light in the hallway. It’s weird, my mom looked at me like I was laying down on the floor, then the ran to Mike furious and crying. Jackie was crying her eyes out while Nazz was trying to cover my neck and chest. Ron was trying to separate my mom from Mike. I tried to tell them to stop, I couldn’t speak, my voice wasn’t coming out… The old man was back, but in the same way he was when I first saw him in the carnival, he asked me if I could help him find his ring. I felt at peace, so, I said yes, he helped me up. I could still see Nazz covering my neck and my mom crying but he told me that I wouldn’t take too long. I grabbed his arm and went with him; it was the first time that I felt this safe since Dad. Hopefully, I would find Dad along the way as well.
