2023.03.17 09:16 AbhiFT [REQUEST][STEAM] Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 ( On sale @ $36.37)

What is MS Flight Simulator 2020?
Microsoft has a long history with Flight Simulators. Their first Flight simulator was released in 1982. While the previous games were fun, the new MS Flight Simulator does something incredible which no other has ever done: It simulates the topography of the Entire Earth as accurate as possible to real world through Satellite Data of Bing/Google maps along with Cloud Computing to generate better visuals and real data for air traffic and weather. Moreover, it also takes real wind into consideration and real-world time; that is, it would take real world time to reach from Destination A to B. With so many hand-modelled aircrafts, planes from A320 Neo, Boeing 747, Cessna, DA62, and the cutest CTLS and A5, with detailed interiors of the cockpit, you truly feel like a Pilot in this game.
The game also includes helicopters, and the Spruce Goose seaplane (the world's largest sea plane ever). The game also offers challenges that only adds to the joy of the game with them being a little challenging.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why I want it:
I love exploring the world, something I am not financially able to do in real world. Every Time I watch something on TV, it's 90% of the time travel channels. The first time I tried Flight Simulator on my friend's PC, I fell in love. It's easy to control and fly the plane, and moreover, I could visit any place in the world anytime. Even staying in the cloudy sky is so much fun with sunlight shining, thunder and rain. I love playing simulation, tycoon games as they are the pinnacle of freedom in gaming world with no bounds. Only your creativity limits you. And playing MS Flight Simulator makes me feel like a bird. The game brings me a joy I cannot express through words.
I am constantly in touch with the MSFS community on Discord and YouTube videos, with always waiting for max737Ifly video to show up as his videos are so good and realistic (even my mom loves watching it). I just cannot get enough from this game. But, as a gamer, we know there is a vast difference between watching and playing. But The gameplay itself is so much fun and rewarding with the world as your travel destination. It also allows to set custom weather. The game sends me to another world and is like a therapy for me.
I can play this game even when I am listening to Podcasts and it makes such an immersive experience. The tiny details the game provides, like waiting instructions from ATC before you move a muscle, dialing the knobs, flipping tiny switches in the cockpit only adds to the experience which I enjoy a lot.
Because I cannot afford the game, I tried to look into alternatives:
  1. Xplanes really is the only contender but it lacks the real-time aspect of weather, wind, terrain MS Flight Simulator provides. Moreover, it's more about planes and their simulation than exploration.
  2. DCS World, which is a full-on military combat simulation game. Even though that game is extremely hard to play with a keyboard, I still managed to play some couple of hours in it. However, it's really not something I am interested in as It's not a game where you can explore the world and the Jet planes are very speedy and hard to control. Compared to that, Flight Simulator is more of an arcade style game and controlling it is fun and easy even with keyboard and mouse.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
why I can't get it:
I cannot afford it to be honest. I am a 3D artist struggling right now with health, bills and job after COVID. I have taken some surveys to earn a bit here and there to collect for the game but it's such a long process and the reward is generally not worth it. Moreover, the tiny amount of money I made for the game, was spent on my meds. My bad luck is that due to a technical mistake, the game was selling with 80% discount but due to time zone difference, I couldn't grab on the once in a lifetime opportunity. I also tried other giveaways for steam gift cards but I never win them and they are so rare to come by. I am really struggling with money and hence I am here.
EDIT: Why Not Game Pass? I don't have a credit card and in the long run it will cost me far more than what the game would have cost me. And MS Rewards programme is quite bad in my region.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
why you should gift it to me:
I will be playing this game everyday and you won't feel your money is wasted. This gift will bring such a big smile to my face that is very hard for me to express through words. I know many people hoard games and don't play them, or they play for a few times and stop. I can guarantee you that once I get this game, I will be playing it every single day! This game is the reason I am for the first time requesting for a game here. And I promise I will do justice to the game and gifter. I am not requesting for any deluxe version or anything, just the base game will suffice for me. I honestly have no idea what I should say here so someone can gift me this game which never goes above 25% discount, but I can say it from my heart that the day I get this game, will be the day I will be flying in the air of joy!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game (40th AE is the base game): https://store.steampowered.com/app/1250410/Microsoft_Flight_Simulator_40th_Anniversary_Edition/
My steam ID: https://steamcommunity.com/id/abhinav7331/
Region: Aisa-Pacific
Country: India
Price of base 40th Anniversary game in India: Rs. 2,999 after -25% Discount. This equals to US $36.37 or €34.09 or £29.90
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS: I really want to thank to anyone who read this long post. And I want to say thank you in advance to the gifter if I get lucky. I hope you all are having a good day. God Speed. Have a nice day! And Thank You!

2023.03.16 20:38 DarkNightTales I was an Alaskan bush pilot. This is what I saw...

I’ve been flying as a bush pilot in Alaska for the last five years or so. It’s a pretty good job for the right sort of person. It goes without saying that you need to be a pretty handy pilot, specifically of small and light aircraft, but beyond that, it also requires a special sort of personality. Folks who thrive on social interaction and the safe comfort of civilization need not apply. Being self-sufficient and mechanically inclined are pretty much prerequisites for those who want stay on this side of the grave, and I’d say it’s fairly important that you have a level head and don’t have a tendency to panic in stressful situations.
Now, don’t misunderstand; I’m not talking about thrill-seekers or those who don’t have a healthy respect for death; those folks don’t tend to last too long in this business. They either end up as another in the long list of missing planes that gains new entries each year, or else they quickly learn that their employers aren’t willing to risk their expensive equipment and cargo with someone that isn’t going to take every possible precaution to ensure the safe return of said aircraft.
I’m just saying that you have to be able to set your fears aside when you’re in the thick of it. If something goes wrong, you need a clear head – you can always puke or pass out once you’re safely on the ground again. I’ve had my share of cold sweats, standing on a frozen runway after a close brush with the afterlife.
Me? I’m a transplant from south Florida, where I spent much of my time doing puddle-jump charters in a small, twin-engine Beechcraft. Interesting, sure, but dealing with people has never been my strong suit. I’m not exactly the sociable sort, even less so when I’m trying to fly. When you’ve got four passengers sitting a couple feet behind you and expecting you to play tour guide on their two-hour flight across the Everglades, it gets old pretty quick.
Or at least it did for me. I guess it works for some people.
Anyway, a flying buddy of mine that I hadn’t talked to in years called me up out of the blue one day with a lead on an open seat at the bush charter company he’d been working with out of Fairbanks. One of their pilots had decided that the harsh Alaskan winters and isolation were more than his nerves could take, so he gave his notice, packed his bags, and headed back south.
Truth-be-told, I had never really considered looking for a gig in Alaska. I always had the impression that most of the bush pilots working there had been flying STOL – that’s Short Take-Off and Landing – in the back country since they were old enough to walk. Nick assured me that there were plenty of respected pilots up there who had originated from the lower-48. When he floated the salary numbers in my direction, I didn’t take too long thinking about it before I’d made my decision, and two weeks later I found myself standing in the offices of my new employer.
That was a while back, and although it took a bit to become accustomed to the type of bush flying that this place demands, I settled in pretty quick and was soon assigned my permanent ride, a De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver.
Maggie, after a Yellow Lab I had as a kid.
Man, what a beauty she is. Solar-yellow with black piping and looking just as pristine as when she rolled off the assembly line in 1967. The Beaver is probably the best bush plane to ever grace the skies, and I’m fairly certain that Maggie saved my ass from a stupid mistake on more than one occasion.
Anyway, I’m getting off-track.
So, at the time this story took place, I’d been flying for Viking Bush Charters for probably a year or so. I’d just returned from dropping supplies to a ranger station up near Denali when I got a call over the radio from my dispatcher.
I was in the hangar at the time, getting a hot cup of coffee while the mechanic was refitting Maggie with her tundra tires, swapping out the floats I’d needed for the supply drop-off earlier. The big, almost cartoonish tires were perfect for most of the areas I tended to fly into, and made for a soft, if energetic, landing.
I was looking forward to getting back to my trailer and relaxing, maybe watching a movie before dozing off, but the crackle from my two-way told me that my exciting plans for the night might not play out.
“Go for Hooper,” I answered, taking a sip of the steaming coffee.
The voice of Buck Jacobs replied through the light static. “Hey, Hoop. What’s your status?”
“Eh, Mike is working on Maggie’s gear, and I was getting ready to head home for the evening. What’s up?”
There was a moment’s pause before Buck replied. “Sorry, Hoop, but I need you to do a turnaround. We just got a call from a ranger station up near Birch Creek. They’ve got someone up there that had a run-in with a brown bear and is pretty banged up.”
I cursed under my breath, but there wasn’t any real venom in it. I learned a while ago that, up here, everybody helps when it’s needed. You never know when it’s going to be you on the other side of that call.
“Can’t they fly him out themselves?” I asked, but I was already walking around my plane to where Mike Nichols was working.
“Negative, Hoop. It’s an emergency and we’re the nearest phone call. I’d send Jackie, but she’s not back from her run up to Minto yet,” he replied.
“Okay, Buck – no worries. I’ll help Mike get Maggie refit and prepped. I should be wheels-up in an hour or so,” I said.
“Thanks, Hoop. I’ll have the details in your hands in fifteen. Dispatch out.”
And there went my relaxing evening.
*
True to my prediction, I was taxiing down the company’s private runway an hour later, the vibration from the big radial engine creating a gentle thrumming that filled the interior. It was just before 3PM when I was airborne, and being that it was late February, I knew I had just over two hours before sunset. So long as everything went smoothly, that should have been enough time to reach the ranger station, load up the passenger, and get back to Fairbanks before dark.
The weather was pretty good when I left – it was pushing plus-10 degrees, and although the reports were calling for snow that evening, the sky was clear as I rose above the trees and turned northeast towards the ranger station.
Everything was going smoothly for the first thirty minutes, before those distant storm clouds I’d been watching on the horizon suddenly seemed to take a keen interest in me and headed my way much faster than I’d have liked.
To make matters worse, I’d started to notice a subtle bumping sensation intermittently coming from the engine. I wasn’t sure if I was starting to lose one of the nine cylinders or if it was something else, but it was definitely something I was keeping my eye on.
If I’d been on a regular supply run, I’d have turned around and headed back to Fairbanks right then and there to get it checked out, but I was acutely aware that anyone who’d had a tangle with a grizzly was probably in a bad way. My flight out to the Birch Creek ranger station may very well mean the difference between life and death for this unfortunate soul.
After another fifteen minutes, I knew that I wasn’t going to make it to the ranger station.
The storm clouds that had been approaching had now overtaken me and covered the afternoon sky in a thick blanket of gray-black ugliness. I could see the periodic flashes of lightning within them, and the air had grown turbulent. To make matters worse, that engine miss I’d been feeling had become more frequent and severe, and I was sure that I now had multiple cylinders that were beginning to fail.
I grabbed the VHF and radioed back to dispatch.
“Viking ground, Viking three-two-zero-foxtrot.”
Buck’s voice crackled through a moment later. “Viking three-two-zero-foxtrot, Viking ground. Reading you, Hoop.”
“Buck, I’ve run into some nasty weather here and have started picking up some engine issues. I’m afraid I’m going to have to abort and head for home. Please advise Birch Creek ranger station of my situation.”
Buck didn’t argue; he knew I wouldn’t abort a pickup like this for a few snow flurries. “Roger that, Hoop. Looking at the weather radar now. Advise you make your heading one-eight-five degrees and drop to nine-hundred to avoid the worst of it.”
“Roger that. Viking three-two-zero-foxtrot out,” I said, banking the plane to the right and starting my return to the airfield. The stormfront, which had overtaken me from my left, had also descended with its approach, bringing the clouds low and thick. I pushed forward on the yoke, starting my descent to Buck’s recommendation and hoping that there weren’t any errant mountains in my way.
Five minutes later, I was fighting with the wind for control of Maggie and was now nearly in a white-out condition, relying almost exclusively on my instruments for navigation. The turbulence was getting severe, tossing the workhorse bush plane around like a kite in a gale. More than once, the groaning of the wing struts made me wonder if the storm was pushing Maggie past her comfort zone and testing the limits of her airframe.
I descended a bit more, dropping to five hundred feet, aware that in these low-visibility conditions, I was pushing my luck with the terrain. The air was a little cleaner down here, though, and the visibility a little better, but I was still being thrown around and I knew I’d have to climb again pretty soon in order to clear the ridgeline I knew was not too far ahead of me. An unnerving metallic popping noise from above my head drew my attention momentarily, and in that moment, I made the decision that I had to find a place to set her down and wait out the storm as best I could.
The trees below me were becoming visible now at this altitude, their peaks piercing the low cloud cover and heavy snowfall like ghostly claws, reaching up from the depths of some abyssal grave to drag me down.
The biggest issue I faced now was finding a suitable place to land safely. I knew that the winds had pushed me off course and I wasn’t as familiar with this area as most others I spent time flying over. I wasn’t aware of any landing strips nearby and was just praying to find a large enough clearing to accommodate her.
Another engine miss, worse this time.
This time, the strained drone of the radial cut out completely for a half-second before resuming, and for the first time since I’d come to Alaska, I realized that there was a very real possibility that I might not make it home. If the engine died completely in what was now a strong tail wind, my airspeed would quickly drop until one of my wings stalled. When that happened, the Beaver would wing-over and I’d tumble to the ground in an unrecoverable death spiral. It might be months or years before my wreckage was discovered out here in the wilderness.
I considered trying to turn into the wind, to keep as much airspeed as possible in that event, but it was gusting bad enough that I was afraid to attempt it, especially with a limping engine.
I was getting ready to radio dispatch and let Buck know of my worsening situation when the thick clouds parted ahead of me briefly. In that instant, I thought I’d won the most important lottery of my life. Directly ahead of me, a quarter of a mile out, was the unmistakable rectangular shape of a small airstrip. It was covered in snow that I hoped wasn’t too deep, but it was my salvation – a lifeline that I wouldn’t dare refuse.
I quickly adjusted my approach and set my flaps as I made for it. Another strong gust fought me, trying to throw me out of alignment with the narrow clearing, but I fought back with throttle and rudder as best I could as I watched the altimeter steadily wind down like an analog clock going backwards in time.
I reached out for the radio handset to advise Buck of my situation and estimated location, but the next gust almost tore the yoke out of my left hand, and I snapped instantly back to a white-knuckled, two-handed grip.
My altitude dropped to two hundred feet.
I was going too fast, I knew. At this speed, I’d either overshoot the strip altogether and slam into the dense tree line, or hit the ground so hard that I’d shear off my gear and probably break my back in the process. I couldn’t slow her down any further, though, or I would risk dropping below stall speed in the strong tail wind, and that would mean a quick trip to the frozen ground.
A hundred feet.
Maggie’s wings dipped below the tree line now as I entered the long and narrow swath of the landing strip, the tall cedars and spruces towering around me forebodingly. The tail wind dropped, obstructed by the great barrier of trees behind me, and I took a breath to thank whatever powers-that-be for this unexpected bit of good fortune.
Fifty feet.
With the flaps set to full, I bled off airspeed quickly and my reflexes took over, transitioning from my near-ballistic flight to a more controlled approach, one the Beaver was much more suited to.
Ten feet.
I pulled back on the yoke and momentarily throttled up as my gear kissed the top of the snow, flaring the bush plane and setting down a bit harder than I would have liked, the jarring of the impact thankfully cushioned by the tundra tires.
I rolled out for another twenty feet or so before Maggie came to a halt in the knee-deep snow, thankful that I hadn’t nosed over. I killed the engine and rested my forehead on the yoke, trying to get my heart rate under control. I didn’t think the shaking of my hands had anything to do with the temperature.
The daylight was fading, but was still light enough to allow me a good view of my surroundings through Maggie’s windows.
I was in the middle of what I guessed was the landing strip, since the tree lines on either side seemed to be about the same distance from me. Those trees were even more imposing down here on the ground. They rose like towering walls on either side, and the woodlands beyond held deep shadows that were only accentuated by the heavy snowfall that continued to obscure my vision.
I reached for the radio and keyed the mic, hailing dispatch. I didn’t have much faith that the VHF would be able to penetrate the trees and the mountain ridge that lay between me and Buck, but it was worth a shot. After a long moment of hissing static, I tried again, but with the same results. It was doubtful that I’d be able to get a signal through until the storm passed, and even then, I didn’t think it likely unless I could get Maggie airborne again.
With only a moment’s deliberation and a resigned sigh, I retrieved the emergency locator beacon from my jacket pocket and activated it. The unit would broadcast a distress signal, along with my location, to the monitoring service. I knew it would be a day, at least, before help arrived, but the sooner I sent the call, the sooner they’d be able to get to me.
I took another look out through the fuselage windows. If there was a landing strip, that meant a possibility that someone was nearby. I didn’t think there was a ranger station out here, but there were enough hunting cabins and homesteads that there was a decent chance I could find shelter. The interior of the plane was still warm, but I knew that wouldn’t last very long in this weather, especially with night approaching.
I unbuckled myself and climbed back through the seats into the cargo area, where I pulled on my heavy coat and shouldered my emergency pack.
Grabbing my rifle from its rack behind the pilot’s seat, I unlatched and swung open the cargo door. A blast of arctic wind hit me in the face, and I squinted my eyes against it, quickly pulling my goggles on and my hood up before dropping to the snow-covered runway.
I pulled the cargo door closed and trudged around the rear of the plane, standing in the furrows left by Maggie’s wheels and turning in a slow circle as I tried to discern any indication of human presence. Despite the howling wind that pulled at my coat and hood, I caught the unmistakable scent of woodsmoke and breathed a small sigh of relief; at least I knew I wasn’t alone out here.
As I scanned my surroundings, my eyes alighted on what looked like a small utility shed on the western edge of the clearing, and I moved with as much speed as the deep snow would allow in its direction. To the left of it, I spied a waist-high railing marking a walkway that led into the shadowed tree line and quickened my pace.
I followed the trail, now feeling what were likely wooden planks beneath my boots. Once in the trees, the brutal wind of the storm lessened and the snow drifted down from the canopy in slow, dancing swirls before settling on the ground with a muted hiss that sounded like the forest around me was quietly exhaling. Between the dim light of the coming dusk and the snowfall, I couldn’t see much beyond the trees nearest me, and I relied on the handrail to guide my travel. It was another few minutes of plodding through the snow-covered walkway before I finally saw the building.
At first, I thought it was a hunting cabin, solitary amidst the endless sea of trees. As I drew closer, though, I could see it was much larger than I first thought – low and wide and of modern construction. Some sort of sign stood between two timber uprights just off the path, its face covered in snow and ice. I paused to brush it clear, somewhat surprised to see the blue background and logo of the Alaskan Division of Agriculture. White lettering beneath it indicated that this was the White River Basin Agricultural Research Center.
I’d never heard of the ADoA having wilderness research centers, but I supposed it wasn’t too far-fetched. Regardless, this was even better news than I’d expected; this meant that I wasn’t approaching some isolated hunting camp, but instead a government post. And that meant my chances of survival and rescue had just increased significantly.
I gave a hoot of joy and patted the sign as if it were an old friend who had just delivered some good news, and jogged the remaining handful of yards to the front door of the building.
Just as I approached, however, the door abruptly swung open, spilling yellow light across the white snow. A man stepped out from the doorway and shouldered a shotgun, leveling it right at my head, his eyes wide and wild as they stared down the barrel at me.
Stop right there!” he shouted at me, his words coming in angry puffs of steam in the frigid air. “Don’t come any closer!”
Whoa! Hold on a minute, chief! Just wait!” I answered, my hands going up reflexively. “I’m not here to cause any trouble.”
He motioned with the shotgun. “Drop the rifle, nice and slow. I’m warning you; I won’t hesitate to blow you in half if you make any sudden moves.”
Holding my free hand up to show I was no threat, I bent slowly and placed the rifle on the ground before rising again. “What’s going on?”
“Who are you? What are you doing here?” He demanded. I could see the muzzle of the shotgun trembling and worried that he might end up shooting me by mistake just due to nerves. He was wearing what looked like a government-issued coat with an embroidered patch on the shoulder and had a week’s growth of beard.
Easy, boss,” I said, trying to keep my voice level and calm. “My name’s Hooper. I’m a pilot for Viking Bush Charters, out of Fairbanks. My plane was forced down in the storm and I was lucky to find your landing strip before she ended up in the trees.”
I was starting to wonder if lucky was the right word anymore.
He looked at me a long minute, his eyes scanning me over, then motioned at me again with the shotgun. “Take off your goggles – let me see your eyes,” he said.
That caught me off-guard, but I nodded and slowly moved my hands to remove the tinted goggles, careful to not make any sudden moves.
He leaned towards me, eyes locked hard on mine searchingly. Then, seemingly satisfied, he abruptly lowered his gun and nodded, as if reassuring himself. He jerked his head back toward the doorway and his entire demeanor suddenly changed. “Well, Hooper, come on inside. And bring your rifle. It’s too damned cold out here.” With that, he turned and walked back inside, resting the shotgun against the interior wall next to the door as he did so.
Now even more confused than before, I reached down and picked up my rifle from the snowy ground, my gaze never leaving the man. As inconspicuously as I could, I worked the lever, chambering a cartridge, and followed him in. It was such a bizarre interaction, I wanted to make sure he wouldn’t surprise me again if he decided to change his mind.
When I entered the building and closed the door behind me, I found myself in what looked like a wood-paneled visitors room, with a couch on one wall and a blazing fireplace fronted by a couple of chairs on the opposite. The man had moved over to a small table near the fireplace, pouring a glass of whiskey from a half-empty bottle and now seemingly completely disinterested in my presence. I frowned and glanced around the room. Aside from the sparse furnishings, there was a closed door across from the one I had entered through, labeled with a “Restricted Access” sign.
The man took a long drink from his glass and turned back to me, holding the whiskey bottle out to me in offering. I just shook my head.
“Sorry about all that,” he said, gesturing vaguely to the door behind me. “Can’t be too careful. I’m Morgan Tate – field research.”
I eyed him cautiously. “Okay, Morgan Tate. Do you make a habit of welcoming visitors with a shotgun?” I still wasn’t sure exactly who I was dealing with here, but something was clearly off.
He just grinned at some private joke that he alone shared and then ducked his head in a nod, taking another swallow of the whiskey. “Lately? Yeah. Or, at least, I would if I got any visitors.” He pointed at me with his tumbler and sat heavily in the chair. I was starting to get the impression that this wasn’t the first drink of the day for Mr. Morgan Tate. “You’re the first living person I’ve seen in more than a week,” he added.
“Are you the only one here?” I asked, looking around the room. There was a row of hooks on the wall beside the door and I took note of several coats hung there.
He smirked, something unreadable behind his eyes. “Now, yeah.”
I didn’t know what sort of game he was playing at, but I was starting to lose my patience. “Care to elaborate on that? I’m having kind of a rough day and you’re not making it any easier.”
The dark-haired man finished off his drink and stood. “Sure, why not? I suppose you’re part of this now,” he said, moving past me toward the “Restricted Access” door.
I followed him as he pushed the door open and proceeded along a narrow, tiled corridor, lit by harsh fluorescent lights. It felt out of place, more like I was walking through the halls of a hospital than an ADoA building in the middle of the bush. He looked over his shoulder and took note of my surprise.
“Yeah, not quite like the ranger stations, is it?” He said, stopping in front of a heavy-looking door at the end of the corridor and keying a quick code into the panel above the handle. I heard a soft click and he pushed it open, exposing a darkened room beyond. He entered and the lights flickered on as I followed.
The room we now stood in was larger than the previous one – probably thirty feet across and smelling of antiseptic and chemicals. Several rows of stainless-steel tables were neatly arranged within, occupied with various unfamiliar laboratory paraphernalia and equipment. In addition to these lab stations, there also appeared to be examination tables along the far wall, a few of which had white cloths covering unidentifiable shapes. I suppressed a shudder; it reminded me of a morgue, though the concealed objects were too small to be human bodies.
“What is this place?” I asked, my eyes taking it all in.
“Just like the sign outside says, Hooper, this is the White River Basin Agricultural Research Center,” he replied, leaning against one of the tables. “It was set up to monitor large mammal wildlife migrations with potential correlation to climate change.”
“Huh,” I replied evenly. “Sounds interesting.”
He grinned. “No, it doesn’t. Not even to me, and I work here. Would you believe that a week ago, there were twenty-five researchers living and working here? Twenty-five, Hooper. This place was hopping, man.”
An uncomfortable tingle ran down my spine, and I shifted the rifle in my hand, the weight of it reassuring as it hung at my side. If Tate noticed, he didn’t mention it.
“What happened last week?” I asked carefully.
When he turned back to me the smirk was gone from his face and his eyes had widened. Whatever was in his thoughts now, he didn’t find it amusing anymore. “That’s when they came, Hooper.”
They?
“The shadows, man. The shadows! They came from the storm! You remember the storm, don’t you?”
The storm.
I knew what he was talking about, of course; I don’t think anyone around here would forget it anytime soon. It was a little more than a week ago, when that freak blizzard came out of nowhere, unpredicted and unexplained. What had started out as a cloudless and unseasonably warm morning ended up burying us in nearly two feet of snow by the time it was over. The sky had shifted from bright and sunny to a bruised and angry granite color within the span of an hour, clouds rolling so low and heavy that it seemed like you could almost reach up and touch them. Our weather station at the field was clocking sustained wind speeds of fifty knots, with gusts up to eighty-five, and we were in a total whiteout condition for the next fourteen hours. We were all trapped in the hangar, huddled around the kerosene jet heaters, listening to the wind as it tried to tear apart the heavy steel structure around us.
By the time the next day came, it was just gone, replaced by the clear blue skies of the previous morning.
Nobody had any good explanation for it, but I’d heard a couple of the old-timers who ran the machine shop whispering about it in the back. I couldn’t make out much of what they were saying – I didn’t much care, if I’m being honest – but they sounded worried. At the time, I thought it was a little strange that the weather would unnerve them as much as it seemed to; these guys were both full-blood Inuit and as hard as nails – it was almost comical to think they’d be worried about a surprise blizzard. No, now that I think back on it, it almost seemed like they were more worried about something in the blizzard. I can’t be sure, since they kept switching in and out of English, but that’s the impression I got, anyway.
“The shadows?” I asked, confused.
His eyes had drifted off into the distance for a moment, lost in his own world. In the next moment, he snapped them back to me eagerly, like he’d just had an epiphany, and said, “Yeah. Do you want to see one?”
“Do I want to see a shadow? What the hell are you talking about, man? You’re not making any sense.”
But he was already on the move again, walking across the room to another door. He beckoned me to follow, entered his code, and pushed it open. Wordlessly, I followed, unease whispering in my ear.
He led me along another hallway, glancing over his shoulder periodically like he was making sure I was still there.
“I caught one. The other researchers didn’t think it was possible, but I knew I could,” he said, and it almost sounded like he was talking to himself more than to me. He stopped at a door marked “OR-2”, pushed it open and walked inside.
I trailed behind him hesitantly, feeling apprehensive about this whole thing. A slow feeling of dread had been worming its way through my subconscious and I wasn’t so sure I wanted to follow this man much further. The whole situation felt wrong, and I was starting to think that Mr. Morgan Tate was more than a little unhinged.
Where were the other researchers he’d mentioned? I’d question whether they ever existed at all, if not for the size of the place and the coats hanging by the door in the reception area.
The room I stepped into now was much smaller than the others and had the feel of some sort of control room. The wall to my left held narrow lockers and a rack of coat hooks occupied by several white lab coats. To my right was a console lined with monitors and keyboards, and above that, the entire upper portion of the wall appeared to be an observation window looking into a darkened room. On the opposite wall was one of those airlock doors that you see in isolation areas of hospitals, stainless-steel and with a small circular window in its smooth surface.
The computer monitors were on and were displaying various graphs and streams of data. Tate sat on one of the chairs at the console and started typing into the keyboard.
“They’re incredible,” he said absently. “Like nothing we’ve ever seen before.”
I moved closer to the observation window, straining to make out anything in the darkened room beyond. All I saw was the stygian blackness, though.
“You have something in there?” I asked, suddenly feeling very uncomfortable. I wasn’t sure I wanted to see whatever this nutcase wanted to show me. “Why are the lights off?”
He glanced away from the console for a second and turned an unreadable grin on me. “They’re not.” With that, he stood and leaned forward, pounding the heel of his fist against the window with a resounding shudder, making me jump in surprise.
I didn’t quite understand what I saw next. The darkness that had obscured my view suddenly swept aside, like someone snatching a curtain violently from across a window and out of sight.
But that wasn’t quite right, either, though. It was more fluid in its abrupt motion, almost like smoke being pulled away by an incredibly powerful and unseen exhaust fan. A muted screeching sound reached my ears, sounding eerily like a poor imitation of a bird of prey. I assumed that the observation room was soundproof, or near enough, and wondered exactly how loud that wailing must have been for it to reach my ears.
I leaned closer to the window, peering upward and to the left, where the darkness had disappeared to, but I couldn’t see any vestige of it.
And then I looked to the rest of the room and drew an involuntary gasp at the horror I saw.
A dozen corpses lay strewn about the otherwise barren interior of the room.
But they weren’t bodies anymore, not really. They were nothing more than skeletons now, still dressed in the clothes they’d worn when they fell. Most were intact, though a few had scattered where they struck the tiled floor. The bones were stripped of all remnants of flesh and were bleach white.
What the fuck?” I said in revulsion and shock, barely above a whisper.
Tate nodded excitedly. “It’s incredible, isn’t it? The others left, but I was able to lure two of them into the holding room and trap them there.”
I stepped back, feeling my stomach turn, and turned an incredulous gaze upon the man. “But, the bodies…”
He nodded again, almost eagerly. “That’s how I lured them. Most of the remaining researchers fled in here to hide. You see, it needs to eat, to hunt. It can’t survive without sustenance, no more than you or I. There were two in the beginning, but after the food ran out, this one turned on the other and now there’s only one.”
“The food? You mean those people?” I tightened the grip on my rifle and took a step backwards to put a little space between the two of us.
“When the shadows came in the darkness of the storm, a few of them were able to slip into the building before we realized what was happening. Half of the researchers were taken that night, in their sleep. You see, they hide and wait for the right moment. They avoid the light; I think it weakens them, but in the darkness...” he trailed off, and I saw an uncomfortable smile grow across his lips, almost of admiration, it seemed. “In the darkness, that’s where they live. That’s where they thrive, where they reign.”
I took another step backwards, my free hand reaching for the door handle behind me and opening it, pushing it with my foot. “You’re crazy,” I said, bringing the rifle up in line with his chest.
If he even noticed it, he gave no indication. His eyes had taken on that maniacal glint again, and he stood, giving a small nod that I thought was meant to reassure me. “There’s no more for it to eat, Hooper. It’s been days since I’ve been able to feed it.” He took a slow step towards me, and I matched it with a retreating one of my own. He smiled and continued, as if explaining to a child. “I have only myself left to offer, but that’s not enough. Don’t you understand? This isn’t just a thing, not just an animal. It’s far beyond our understanding – far beyond our own primitive evolution. It’s perfect.”
His eyes flicked away from me for a moment to an illuminated red button on the console nearby, and his hand drifted over to it.
Don’t!” I shouted, bringing the rifle up to my shoulder. “Don’t do it, Tate!”
“There’s nothing to be afraid of,” he said, an obscene caricature of gentleness filling his voice. “It’s quick.” His hand hovered over the button.
“I will shoot you, Tate! Don’t make me do it!”
From where I stood, I could see another of those airlock doors through the observation window, and to my horror, a swirling mass of impenetrable blackness massed at the threshold. I could almost feel its anticipation. This wasn’t the first time it had been fed. It knew what was coming.
In that instant, when my eyes flicked away from him, Tate stabbed at the button. With a curse, I squeezed the trigger on the rifle at the same instant, but it was too late. The deafening report in the small room was immense, but even as the round tore through the man’s chest, he’d already pressed it.
I watched in horror as the twin airlock doors began to retract, and without another thought, I turned and fled as fast as my weary muscles could carry me. Thankfully, the codes required to open the doors weren’t needed to exit them, and I flew down the hall and through the research room. As I passed it and threw open the door to the reception area, I heard that wailing screech again from somewhere behind me, haunting and otherworldly, echoing through the empty facility, much louder than before.
Then, I heard another sound, this one the agonized screaming of Morgan Tate. I only gave it the briefest of thoughts as I jerked open the outer door and fled into the snowstorm. I could only hope that feeding time would give me enough of a window to make it back to Maggie.
The air had darkened even more with the coming of dusk and had grown colder. Thankfully, the storm seemed to have lost much of its fury, the front having now passed by and leaving me in its relatively calm wake.
I ran along the path, just enough light remaining of the day to follow the tracks I’d made on my way in. The rifle was heavy in my grip, but I didn’t dare lose my only defense. When that howling screech echoed through the trees behind me, I redoubled my speed, praying that it wouldn’t be able to find me before I’d reached Maggie.
The frigid air burned my lungs, and my throat was raw by the time I reached the snow-covered landing strip. I almost cried with joy at the sight of my bright yellow Maggie, waiting patiently for my return.
I reached the cargo hatch and swung it open, throwing myself inside and pulling it shut behind me just as another of those haunting wails reached my ears, closer this time.
Much closer.
I didn’t dare look out the windows as I threw off my pack and rifle and climbed back into the pilot’s seat. I buckled on my harness and my hands danced over the controls, the start-up procedure second nature.
Battery master on, fuel selector to center, mixture lever forward, fuel-oil shutoff lever down…
A resounding high-pitched howl penetrated the cabin and something black moved outside, rushing from window to window, door to door, searching. It was here now, trying to find a way inside!
Concentrate!
…throttle at 10%, fuel pressure pumped to 5 PSI, engine primed…
I froze. My windshield had suddenly gone completely black, shrouding me in darkness. Even though I couldn’t see anything in the featureless void just a foot away from my face, I could feel its desperation. I felt its sightless gaze, and below that, some dark malice, an inhuman and alien hunger.
I pressed the starter switch and the 9-cylinder radial engine started turning over, slowly at first, laggard and sluggish. My blood chilled as I realized that it wasn’t catching, wasn’t starting. My thoughts flew back to the engine problems I’d been experiencing before my emergency landing and, in that moment, I was certain my luck had finally run out.
But then, a backfire, then another, and then a third, coughing black puffs of smoke from the exhaust.
And then it caught, and that big, beautiful Pratt & Whitney radial took over, the loud drone rising smooth and steady as Maggie woke from her slumber. I pushed the throttle forward, inertia pressing me into my seat. I no longer cared about the engine misfires or the storm – a fiery death in the trees was preferable to whatever that thing had in store for me, I was sure.
The snow was deep, and even with the big tundra tires, I had to work to keep from nosing over as I began to gain speed. At some point, the black mass disappeared from my windscreen, and I was greeted with the glorious sight of an open path before me.
With the passing of the stormfront, the wind had shifted directions, and I was into a headwind now, perfect for my needs. I pushed the throttle to full and pulled back gently on the yoke. I felt the wheels leave the ground, now free from the snow’s drag, and continued my climb until I was above the trees and gently banking back toward the south, towards home.
As I passed over the landing strip, I thought I could just make out a black shape on the ground below, stretching and snaking along after me in its futile pursuit before I lost it in the trees.
*
The engine miss returned after another ten minutes of flying, but Maggie carried me back to safety. She always took care of me. Forty minutes later, I was back on the ground in Fairbanks and taxiing for the hangar.
Stopping the bush plane just outside, I shut her down, unbuckled myself, and carefully climbed down to the runway, where my body fought with itself for which was going to happen first, the puking or the passing out.
At this point, I’d happily suffer either.
Mike Nichols came jogging out of the hangar after hearing my approach and helped steady me.
“Jesus, Hoop, you gave us all a scare,” he smiled amiably. “It must have been a hell of a flight – you look like you saw a ghost, man.”
I could only nod and stumble my way towards the warmth of the hangar, grateful for his shoulder to brace myself against. Just before we reached the service door, he paused and looked back at Maggie. “Buck told me you had some engine problems, but he didn’t say anything about a fire.”
I frowned and shook my head. “No fire. I lost some cylinders.”
He stood there a moment longer, an odd expression on his face, before opening the door and ushering me inside. “Weird. I thought I saw some black smoke coming from under the engine cowl right after you shut her down."

2023.03.10 22:39 TalkAboutPopMayhem Touch-Up Paint Question

My overall paint job is still good, but I have spots where it's flaked off, like the spinner, vertical stabilizer, and landing struts. The spots are mostly the size of a dime or smaller but a couple are the size of a quarter. I'd like to just get some touch-up paint that I can dab on. Anyone have any experience with this? I see PTI on Aircraft Spruce but wonder if there's something better. This is for a 1975 Beech- what type of paint do I want?
My plan for color matching is to go to Lowes or Home Depot, take one of every sample card they have, and on a sunny day use the cards to match. Unfortunately, the brown has faded to different shades in different places. Not quite sure what I'll do about that.
EDIT: I have no intention to buy paint from anywhere but an aviation coatings manufacturer, like PTI. I'm just going to use the hardware store sample cards to match the paint and then submit that to whomever I buy the paint from. I can't just give them the color codes from my airframe logbook because, as PTI points out on their website, colors fade over time.
PTI sells polyurethane, enamel, and epoxy paint. That's what I meant by "what type?" I DID NOT mean "do I want house, fence, or lawnmower paint?"

2023.03.08 00:51 Ibgarrett2 Andair parts

My SlingTsi build uses an Andair fuel selector. I'm doing a few modifications which require 4-90° elbows and the fuel extender. I ordered these parts from AircraftSpruce back in mid-December. I just called to check to see if they have an ETA on when the parts may arrive. The last of the parts are scheduled to arrive late May of this year.
My question really is - WTF? How does it take so long to make some parts and ship them to the states (Andair is based in the UK)? I could see a few months - but six months?
I'd order them from somewhere else - but the other orgs are all back ordered there as well. Super annoying given I'd really like to close up that section of the plane and move along.

2023.02.20 18:22 GarageAJ Looking for a tough metric M8 nut

Here's the nut I'm looking for.https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/mazda-nut-na01r1868
I can't seem to find it with out a Mazda part number and dealership pricing.
I believe its an M8x1.5 nut, but the ones I'm finding are all 13mm (outside dimension) I need it to be 12mm. The original one is also thinner like a jam nut, and since it gets exposed to weather, I believe its also galvanized. I'll try to pull one off the car soon and put my mic to it and take pics.
I've checked Grainger, Metric and Multi-standard (Local to Dallas TX) as well as Spruce Aircraft and some other google searched distributors... Should I stop wasting time and pay the dealership?

2023.02.02 04:51 assessment_bot [2 None] [September 24 2010] BOEING A75N1, Bealeton/ VA USA

NTSB Preliminary Narrative

According to the flight instructor, the flight departed to conduct airwork and grass field landings. The pilot under instruction was seated in the rear seat, and the flight instructor was seated in the front seat. The pilot under instruction stated that the flight instructor was on the flight controls at the same time since it was going to be his first landing on a grass strip. However, the flight instructor stated that he advised the pilot under instruction, “you have the controls,” and received acknowledgement. On the first touchdown to runway 28, the tailwheel-equipped airplane bounced and became airborne, then touched down a second time. After the second touchdown, when the airplane began turning to the right, the flight instructor “got on the controls” and added left rudder, which was “ineffective.” The airplane then ground-looped 90 degrees and struck a clump of spruce trees. Post-accident examination revealed that the airplane incurred damage to both lower wings. Neither pilot reported any preexisting mechanical malfunctions or anomalies with the airplane, and winds were reported as being from 200 degrees true at 7 knots.

NTSB Final Narrative

According to the certificated flight instructor (CFI), the purpose of the flight was for the pilot under instruction (PUI) to conduct airwork and grass field landings. The PUI was seated in the rear seat and the CFI was seated in the front seat. The PUI stated that the CFI was on the flight controls in conjunction with him since it was going to be his first landing on a grass strip. The CFI stated that he advised the PUI that the PUI had authority over the flight controls to which he received an acknowledgement. On the first touchdown, the tailwheel-equipped airplane bounced and became airborne, then touched down a second time. After the second touchdown, when the airplane began turning to the right, the flight instructor took over authority of the flight controls and applied left rudder, which was ineffective. The airplane then ground-looped 90 degrees and struck a cluster of trees. Post-accident examination revealed that the airplane incurred damage to both lower wings. Both pilots reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or anomalies with the airplane.

NTSB Probable Cause Narrative

The pilot under instruction’s improper recovery from a bounced landing and the flight instructor’s delayed remedial action, which resulted in a ground loop and collision with trees.

New to the hobby and looking for friendly advice
Hello modelships first let me apologize as I am sure I'm about to ask quite a few silly and not exactly inspired questions. I recently decided that I would really like to begin a collection of all of the current active duty aircraft carriers or at least one from each class type as doing all the American carriers would probably quickly fill up the shelves in my china cabinet for which I am building the models for. I decided that I wanted to start with a model that if it came out a little wrong or not looking so great would not be the end of the world. So I chose admiral kuznetsov from Russia. The ship is so commonly damaged or in dry dock that I could quickly tell friends that the models a little off simply because it is trying to be accurate to life haha. I do have some questions though. First though let me tell you which model it is as you can see in the picture it is the trumpeter model in the 700 to 1 scale I primarily selected it because I found that nearly all of the active duty aircraft carriers have models in or around that scale so it would be easy for me to do them all. I vastly underestimated the number of parts that are in the aircraft carrier. It has some 600 parts which I'm sure there are models with massively more but for me and my only prior experience being some small model cars from my youth that consisted of some 80 parts. This was a massive step up. I am wondering should I paint the pieces first? Or assemble the entire thing and then paint it. Would it be better to use thin or thick CA glue. What's the best way to detach pieces from the sprues. I have a very sharp pale of nail pliers with a flat bottom that can do very fine flush cuts with those be good? Should I file the blemishes from the sprue? Any other helpful advice you have would be greatly appreciated as I embark on this journey. The only experience I have that seems valuable at this point is not to begin removing things from the spruce until they're called for in the assembly instructions I made that mistake once as a kid haha.

2023.01.17 05:09 Sypheni Game Crashed whilst "Rendering Entity In World"

Me and my friends are playing a modpack with mods we chose and thought would be fun, it is around 100 mods added. In the beginning, we started off as normal and everything was fine until we started mining. Me and one of my friends were mining in a cave, for gold when we just crashed. I was in the same chunk as them, and poof! Our game crashes. This happens multiple times throughout the gameplay and we can not figure out which mod is causing it to act this way. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

I tried reading through myself but I couldn't really find anything sadly.
EDIT: For extra info, I was the only one playing with shaders. Everyone else may have had Iris but I was the only one with it enabled. The person who broke the gold ore, causing the 2 people (me and them) in the chunk was someone who was not using Iris and had it disabled.

I am trying to put together a quite large modpack and am unsurprisingly having issues. I have really no idea how to comprehend the crash log, so if someone would help I'd be grateful.

Note: This is a story I wrote over twenty years ago (and it shows), but I think it fits in this subreddit. There are a number of typos (I've tried to clean the worst offenders up), and a few jarring transitions. Conversations are stilted, and the cadence is nowhere as smooth as I would like... It is not the story I would write today, but since I was considering a rewrite, I figured I could share the old version with y'all. I choose to split it into multiple posts, since the original is over 70K words long.

When worlds touch

I awoke that day as first rays of sunlight hit my face. I stretched and yawned. It was the last day of my summer vacation, and the rain had finally stopped. I ate a quick breakfast, finishing of my supplies, and started breaking camp. I had a long hike in front of me before I reached the railway. Before I left, I looked longingly around me, drinking in the sight of untouched forest. I really enjoyed spending my free time out here, in the middle of nowhere. No interruptions, no stress, just the woods and me. The world could go under and I would not know, nor care.
The sun was higher in the sky as I was working my way through some of the denser parts of the spruce-forest. Just a little way ahead was a clearing, I remembered, and there I had planned to rest a while. Even if my five feet eleven frame is fairly muscular, it isn’t able to go on forever. I pulled one hand through my short brown hair, trying to keep the sweet out of my eyes as I was cursing under my breath. I always filled my backpack with too much heavy equipment. It made life in camp a bit more comfortable, but it doubled the weight I had to carry. Then I brightened up, as I noticed the clearing between the threes. Just a few more steeps, and…
The flash of light blinded me, but what shocked me most was the sound that accompanied it. It was as if the air was torn in two, wailing in pain. I dropped down, putting a fallen trunk behind the clearing and myself. Somewhere behind me the sound of a falling three was heard. Carefully peering between the branches, I saw a number of figures out there on the clearing. I shook my head and risked another look. They looked vaguely like humans, but either they were dressed up, or they wasn’t human at all. Shorter than most people I knew, their heads immediately caught my attention. Looking vaguely wolfish, dominated by a muzzle. Their eyes were closer together than a wolfs, and their pointed ears were high on their heads. Looking closer, I saw much to my surprise that they were dressed in leather armour and carried various old fashion weapons. Very slowly I brought up my camera. People wouldn’t believe me without photographs, and I knew that certain people should know about this.
It was a few days later. I was back on my job, repairing and readying fighter-aircrafts. My photos had caused laughter first, but as reports of violent attacks had begun to trickle in I was suddenly taken seriously. A couple of recognizance flights had been made to the spot I had seen what was now called ‘the wolfmen’, but neither had returned. This, and the fact that most of their attacks was lightning quick and totally devastating, was leading to widespread panicking. There were even rumours of them using magic, which would explain how a force armed with swords and arrows could win against a modern army. My workmates and I knew it was only a matter of time before the shit really was going to hit the fan.
Then it did, big time. The wolfmen descended on the airbase, killing anyone the saw and blasting buildings apart with bolts of energy. I hid in an old trench, trembling in fear. I had tried to shoot one of the wolfs, but after taking a couple of shoots in the chest, the wolfman had simply disappeared. Covering up with old leaves, I just wanted to wait out the assault, then run away. From what little I had heard of the briefings, I knew that it was suspected that the wolfmen was trying to protect a single spot – the spot where I had first seen them. I fell into an uneasy sleep after making a rash decision.
A few days later I was sitting in hiding near the clearing again. I had walked hard every night and hid every day to get here, and now I wouldn’t be able to move further without running into one or more enemies. Cursing myself for my stupidity, I regretted my sudden decision to return there. There was 'wolfmen' all over, and in fact, I could see several right then, standing in a clutch at the edge of the clearing. They were dressed differently than the ones I had seen before, richer and more opulent. Their metal armour was glittering in the rays of the raising sun. As the sun climbed higher, I examined them, noting how most of the group appeared to be females. So far on my journey here I had only encountered males, so it was a small shock for me.
Suddenly one off the creatures turned her head, her nostrils flaring. She extended an arm toward the spot I was hiding as she said something to the rest of the group. I cursed under my breath, and without wasting any time readied a hand-grenade and tossed it towards the group. As soon as the sound of the explosion died out I jumped to my feet, my sub machinegun stuttering and shaking as I sprayed bullets towards the group. They just stood there, a glittering shield before them seemingly deflecting the flying lead. Then, as the bolt fell on an empty chamber, the shield disappeared and one of the females lifted a crossbow. I tossed the sub machinegun at her as I dived and rolled, drawing my nine inch sami knife as I leap to my feet again.
"Jeg skal kan hende dø", I growled as I pointed my knife towards the closest creature "men jeg skal ta dere med med til helvete!"
Much to my surprise she seemed to smile, drawing a two feet long sword from her side and coming to a guard position.
"You honour me," she said.
I couldn’t believe my ears. Were she really talking English, even if the ascent was odd and her pronunciation unfamiliar? Maybe I could find out more afterwards, if I was still alive. I watched her closely as I drew another knife, with a three inch blade, from my belt, holding it in my left arm. The rest of the group formed a rough circle around my opponent and me. I waited, both knifes at ready, waiting for her first move, taking the opportunity to study her closer. She was about five feet high, slender built. Her hair, as well as her tail, which she wagged behind her, was blond, almost white, and so was her fur too. She had large brown eyes, with a look of happy mischief in them. She was dressed in what looked like scale mail, brightly polished.
Suddenly she exploded into action, trying a low stroke, and I brought down my left knife, blocking the stroke. The force of impact made was felt all the way to my shoulder, but I made a quick stroke with my longer blade, aiming for her left arm. She quickly blocked with her blade, twisting it in her hand. I took a step backward to get a clear line of attack, but she followed up with a low sweep, opening an ugly gash in my right leg. I grunted, and tried a fast and straight stab with my short blade, managing to penetrate her armour. A small red stain appeared on her right shoulder, but it didn’t seem to stop her. As she brought her sword around in a tight arc coming straight for my head, I crossed my blades in the path of hers. The force of impact made my knees shudder. She disconnected her sword, and faster than I could see, she twisted around, her sword heading for my right arm, forcing me to a clumsy parry which not only shattered my short blade, but my left hand too. I momentarily fell to my knees, pressing my broken hand toward my chest.
My opponent stood over me, sword at ready.
"Pity. I really had hoped for more." I heard her say, her breath somewhat quicker than it had been a little wile ago.
No doubt about it, she really was speaking a tongue I understood. I leaped back to my feat, and faster than I thought possible I lashed out, opening a long gash in her sword arm, making her drop the sword.
"Jeg er ikke ferdig enda," I shouted "men det er du!"
I struck again, aiming for her heart, but she tossed her left arm up, sending my knife flying. Both now disarmed, I decided that my larger height and bulk might carry the day. Jumping forward, I knocked her over, locked my right arm around her slender neck and squeezed. Blue dots started swimming before my eyes as she raked her claws across my face and chest, but slowly her struggles became less, her eyes bulging. Then several strong hands pulled me away, a cloth was pressed over my mouth and nose and darkness fell.

Awake in a strange place

I slowly surfaced the ocean of consciousness again. The fourth thing that I noticed was the fact that I was in a soft and comfortable bed, the third thing was throbbing pain in my leg and hand. It took some time before I got so far and the reason for this was the second thing I noticed; my head was spinning and hurting like I had been at the mother of all parties the night before. It hurt so much that I couldn’t concentrate on the first thing I noticed, a pungent, almost nauseating sweet smell in the air. As my head slowly stopped its mad spin and I found myself in a bed, I carefully opened my eyes to see where I was. Some distance away from the bed, large canvas walls rose from a makeshift wooden floor, joining up with a roof in the same material. Some sort of tent then. I looked around me, noting a seated figure in one corner of the tent. Unlike the one I had fought with, the fur on this one was motley brown, and the hair was short.
I lay still a few minutes, trying to decide what to do. Settling on escape as the appropriate action, I tried to slide out the bed noiselessly. But alas, no sooner than I had started pulling at the covers, a soft bell rang, and the figure in the corner looked up at me. I stayed motionless as she came closer. She was dressed in a simple grey tunic and a half-long skirt in the same colour. Her tail was wagging as she leaned over me, curiosity in her eyes.
"So you’re awake, right?" she asked.
I decided quickly not to give away the fact that I understood her, so I decided to play on the fact that she spoke what seemed to be English, and not Norwegian.
"Unnskyld, men hva sa du?"
She shook her head, a smile growing on her lips.
"Give in," she said, "you talk in your sleep."
I cursed beneath my breath.
"Okay," I said, "you got me then. Now what?"
Half an hour later I knew. I had been given a chance to wash up, and was dressed in my dirty uniform again. Even if my wounds were obviously cared for, I still felt shaky from the loss of blood and the heavy odour in the area wasn't helping any. At my back were three soldiers, all males and all with their swords drawn. In front of me were more of the ‘wolfmen’, all females and clustered around a table, and among them the one I had fought with. She too was dressed in grey, and her right arm was in a sling. On all sides around us, as far as I could see, the ground was covered in little pink flowers. A little way of two wooden post was erected, the air between them shimmering. She noticed me and came closer, almost close enough to touch.
She looked at me, up and down, before she opened her mouth and said in a cheerful tone "Hi."
I didn’t reply, so she continued "I’m Xaviera, High General of the Lupa armed forces."
Still I held my tongue, and in the embarrassing silence that followed you could hear a needle fall.
She started talking again: "My friends call me Xav. What are your name?"
I straightened up, and looking her in the eyes I said: "I’m Hans Johansen, first Lieutenant in the Royal Norwegian Airforce, my service number is 194/030193."
"An officer? Does your officers let themselves be captured then?"
Her voice was light, her tone taunting. I looked away as I replied: "I most certainly didn't plan on it."
I looked back at her, my voice growing mocking: "But I know it wasn't you who captured me, I was doing my best to kill you at the time."
This time she looked away, and I could see her skin turning red under her fur.
"You fight well Hans… I've never lost a fair battle before."
I held my tongue, even if her ideas of fair didn't match mine. About then another one came running up, delivering a scroll to Xav. She unrolled it; frowned and signaled the guards to take me back to the tent.
As I was ushered back inside I noticed that the female whom had been there when I woke up still was there. I nodded to her and sat down on the bed. She walked over and sat down next to me, a tad to close for my taste.
Turning towards me, she said, "So how did your meeting with Xav go?"
I looked at her, then said, "She told me her name, I told her mine. Then she got busy."
"And what are your name then?"
I gave a short laugh.
"And what makes you think I'm telling you?"
She looked away for some time, then said in a low voice "I'm Kidera. I'm Xav's friend, and one of her advisors. I'm the one who tried to shoot you with the crossbow, I’m the one who fell you in the back as you was victorious, but I’m also the one who tended your injuries. I think the last bit have given me the right to know it."
I nodded, then said, "I'm Hans. Who I am or what I am not very important right now. Where I am, and why, is. Will you tell me?"
She still didn't look at me, and an awkward silence erupted.
I licked my lips, deciding to let caution take a vacation. "If you tell me Kidera, I might be able to make it worthwhile for you, one way or another."
She looked at me for what felt like a long time, a slight smile on her face.
"Very well then. You're at the Plains of Pantangeon. And that is because the rift hasn't closed yet."
"A nice start Kidera, but you still haven't told me anything."
Kidera sighted.
"The Plains of Pantangeon lies in the middle of the Lupa Empire. It is in many ways the centre of the empire. Every few hundred years, the flowers which have given the plain its name blossoms, and for some reason this opens a rift to your world."
I clenched my hand hard as she continued.
"And every time the rift opens, your people comes through in greater or lesser numbers, disturbing our fragile peace. This time Dumare and Xav wanted to find out what lay beyond the rift."
I was quiet for a long time, and then I said softly "Your people attacked us. You killed thousands of innocent men, women and children. You burned our cities. We never knew of the rift. But that still don't explain why I am here, instead of being killed."
"Xav ordered you brought back. You're the first one we ever captured alive. Besides," she grinned and gave my side a playful tap "I think she likes you. You're the first I have heard of who has bested her in combat. I know I kind of likes you anyhow."
I closed my eyes, trying to understand what she was saying.
"What happens when the flowers wither?"
"The rift closes of course."
I turned towards her smiling face, and asked with a voice that cracked "When?"
"We do not know to tell you the truth. They have been in bloom for more than four weeks now. Xav hopes to get enough warning to bring the troops back, since we have no way of reopening it."
My mind was racing. If the rift closed with me on this side, I might never make it home again, never. One way or another, I had to cross the rift back home. I pretended to yawn, and half-closed my eyes.
Then I said "One thing Kidera. Don’t stand in my way. I really don’t want to hurt you, not after what you have done for me so far."
"What?" she replied, obviously confused by my sudden change of topic.
"Just promise me, okay?"
"Whatever," she shrugged "I promise."
I pretended to fall asleep. Minutes later I heard she leaving the tent, and I opened my eyes again. Moving as fast and as silent as I could I got up, and peered through the flap of the tent. Two guards were blocking my way, their backs towards me. I quietly let the flap close again and walked over to the back of the tent. I lay flat on the rough wooden surface and lifted the canvas a little. Then I squeezed my way under it, rolling over hundreds of the little pink flowers that covered the plains. The heavy aroma made my head spin madly again. From this close I could clearly see how many of them was turning grey and slack. Clearly, I had no time to lose. I worked my way as fast as I dared, hiding behind tents and crawling flat through the calf-high vegetation. As I reached the last tent I saw the rift dead ahead, and a little off to the right, the group that, as far as I could see, included both Kidera and Xaviera. They were still standing around the table, but there seemed to be a lot of activity. If I were lucky they would not notice me.
As I started for the rift it seemed like I would be lucky, but halfway there I heard raised voices behind me. I tried to walk faster, but the pain in my right leg was preventing me from gaining much. I cast a glance towards the noise, noting that while some of the lupa was running after towards me both Xaviera and Kidera was standing still. Kidera held her face in her hands, but Xaviera held hers high, and seemed to be chanting something. I looked forward again. Less than a hundred meters was left to salvation, but then a flickering blue light engulfed me, and suddenly it felt like I was walking through moving water. My muscles tensed on their own accord. I bit my teeth together and keep moving on. After a few dozens steps I heard Xaviera cry out, and the strange blue light that engulfed me increased in luminosity. Walking became even heavier, almost like walking through jelly. Still I moved on, every step bringing a dull pain to my joints. Just a few meters stood between my home world and me. Again Xaviera cried out, and the light grew until it almost blinded me. The very air seemed to glow, and the smell of ozone was overpowering. I managed a few more steps, even if it felt like moving through earth and my joints and muscles hurts like if they were on fire. Then, just as my outstretched hand was about to touch the rift, a thin, high-pitched tone was heard, and it simply stopped being there. I stood frozen in a blue sphere as it hit me. I was stranded, a stranger among strangers.

Lost among strangers

A s the blue sphere suddenly disappeared I tipped forward, hitting the ground hard. All my joints was stiff, none of my muscles wanted to obey my brain. Then, as it slowly dawned on me how close I had been to the rift, I started crying. My family, all my friends, my home, my entire life in fact, was utterly and irreversible lost to me. I finally managed to get enough control over my own body to sit up and through tears I saw Kidera and a few other lupas approach me. For whatever it was worth, none of them had drawn their weapons. I managed to get up on my own feet just as they reached out for me, then my knees gave in and I fell like a tree. The next thing I knew, Kidera had taken hold of my face, forcing me to look at her.
"You misbegotten son of a whore! We still had people on the other side!" she hissed between clenched teeth "And poor Xav is knocked out. I never seen her pour so much into a spell before."
"How many?" I managed to say through dry lips.
"What?"
"How many did you lose on my world?"
She seemed to relax a little as she lapsed into thought.
"About one-third of our forces. Say around two-thousand troopers and close to three hundred officers."
"I see…" I looked down before I continued, my voice barely holding up "Twenty-three hundred are many casualties in one day. But at least they are lost together. I, on the other hand, am lost all alone."
She looked at me for a little while, then started barking orders to the others around her. Quickly I was lifted up and carried towards the tents again. Once there I was helped to sit on a low bench, and Kidera sat down a little distance away. We sat in silence a long time, I weeping silently for my loss. Finally, she broke the quiet, softly asking me how I was feeling. I quickly took stock of myself before I replied.
"Physically, I’ve not too bad. My joints hurt," I made a small pause before I continued, "but I think that is some sort of side-effect from whatever spell Xaviera used. The wound in my leg is painful, and so is my broken hand."
I stopped again, and just as Kidera was opening her mouth I went on; "I’m feeling famished as well."
"The pain in your joint should pass in a little while." She tilted her head slightly as she went on; "I have seen that spell stop five attackers once, and with you she had to cast it three times."
She scratched her muzzle thoughtfully, before talking again.
"It might be that you're different in ways we can't understand, it might be that the flowers of Pantangeon somehow disturbs magic, or maybe it was just your willpower that made your body move."
She was lost in thought for a few seconds before she stood up.
"But I'm losing track of my tongue now, I'll make sure you get some food. Then I'll take a look on Xav. She passed out from the effort of stopping you."
She left the tent, leaving me sitting there, feeling very alone and lost. Shortly thereafter a male entered the tent, carrying a tray with food. He looked somehow younger than the once I had seen so far, and keen to learn more about the world I was stranded in I asked him what the different food was.
"Eh… that's bread… rye bread." he stuttered, obviously either surprised I needed to ask, or scared.
He continued "That's some cold meat of poultry, and in the mug there is a measure of small bear. It ain't much, but we've been in the field for most of the season."
I nodded as I replied "I understand. It's better than I had feared, being a prisoner and all."
He hovered behind me as I started tasting the food, clearly trying to work up the courage to say something Finally, he worked up his courage.
"The soldiers says you're a officer?"
"That’s true." I replied.
"But you're a male. How can a male be a officer?"
I turned to look at him. He was obviously confused.
"Hmm," I said, "you're still pretty young aren't you?"
He nodded slightly, as he said; "I'm fifteen summers now, but I have travelled with the army the last year. I hope they will let me be a soldier next year when I'm finishes my apprenticeship."
I looked at him for a long time, then finally said; "I'm twenty-seven years old, as we count in my world. While I'm not old, neither am I young. But it still shocked me to see women commanding men."
I returned to the food, and after a little while I heard the boy leave. I idly wondered right then if I should think of him as a boy or as a pup.
Having eaten, I sat still for some time, trying to comprehend what had happened the last day or so. While the rift was closed, and all I held dear safe from the lupas, I was a prisoner on a strange world. While the closing of the rift made sure the lupas could not attack my home anymore, it also meant that I had no real hope of ever coming home to any of it again. I sighted. Somehow, I just had to take one day at a time. About then Xaviera entered the tent. She sat down on the bench I was sitting on, her back toward the table, twisting slightly so I mostly saw her back. She looked like she had been hang-gliding through hell without enjoying it. After what felt like a long time, I broke the silence.
"How's your arm getting along?"
She looked at me for a second before she replied; "Well enough I guess. I have not time to dwell on it thought."
Again a gloomy hush fell in the tent. Finally she broke it.
"Tell me Hans… what do your people do with captives?"
"Captives?" I said, "You mean prisoners of war?"
Xaviera looked thoughtfully for a long time, and then nodded slowly, saying; "We have never called them that, but I think that would be what I'm meaning."
"We're supposed to treat them well. But we don't always live as we teach."
"I see." she murmured "I just hoped that your people didn't kill prisoners like the dark ones do. We use to say that if you fight the dark ones and lose, you're lucky if you die at once."
I decided not to follow that reference at the time, but rather follow up on something she hadn't said.
"But how bout your people Xaviera? What can I expect?"
She shrugged.
"We aren't used to captives. No follower of the dark path has ever been taken alive," she paused before she went on "or dead. They always bring their dead with them."
We sat in silence a long time, then she spoke again, her voice a little shaky; "We will probably try to get as much information out of you as we can… after all, I lost almost twenty-three-hundred of my best troops in exchange for you."
"I can not, and I will not give you any information," I replied, "I'm many things, but not a traitor to my land, race or world."
Again the silence descended, until I broke it, saying; "But know this, even if your troops are lost to you, I'm certain that they will be well treated if they choose to surrender."
As I said that, Xaviera started sobbing low, and in between the sobs she managed to say; "Twenty-three hundred… one in every three I had on this assignment… and I have, or rather had, one third of the entire defence-force here… and when the crops are harvested, the dark ones will attack again."
I didn't know what to say, so I made some vague, sympathetic grunts. She didn't seem to notice, but went on sobbing.
"I've lost one ninth of my already slim forces to keep one prisoner. We will lose many of the outlying farms this winter. Dumare might even have to have me executed, and order any information you might have extracted at any cost."
"Dumare? Any cost?" I asked.
"My sister, and Empress of the Lupa empire. And we have a way, seldom used, to break the strongest will; torture."
"She cant really want to torture me," I paused, shivering as I thought about it "can she?"
Xaviera just looked at me for a long time before she drew a knife, placing it on the table between us. I glanced at it, noting she had placed the handle towards me.
"She will do it," Xaviera said, "if she considers it important enough. But if you wish to avoid it, and at the same time avoid living in a strange world, I will not stop you.
I looked at her as she turned away, then at the knife, then back at her.
"I see. And if I instead choose to use this knife on her whose fault it is that I am stranded here, whom at the same time feels the loss of twenty-three hundred on her shoulders?"
Xaviera shuddered visible.
"You… you have already beaten me once… in fair combat. Now, unarmed and with my back turned, I… I wouldn’t even have time to fight."
I thought for a long time, then carefully picked up the knife.
"It’s a wicked blade you have picked," I stated as I examined it, "the serration along the back ought to be able to cut a spine easily."
She didn't reply, but I saw how her muscles tensed in fear for what she thought could happen. I adjusted my grip, and with a quick stroke buried half of the blade in the table. Xaviera jumped several inches of the bench at the sound then folded her head in her hands, shaking uncontrollably.
"No," I said softly, "I'll never kill myself in fear of the future, and I won't kill you to ease your conciseness. If I can live with my fears, so can you."
"I see…" she replied after some time, "Kidera was right about you. You are like us in many ways, but so totally different in others."
She slowly stood up, her legs a bit wobbly. As she turned towards me, I noted how the fur on her face was wet, telling me she had cried. I resisted an urge to stroke her chin, telling her everything would be okay.
"You better try to get some sleep," she said, "tomorrow we start the journey to the capital."
She left the tent, leaving me and my thoughts behind.

Trying to cope

Someone pulled at my arm. Slowly I lifted my head, having fallen asleep at the table. I shock my head to clear my mind and looked around the still dark tent. Next to me stood the young male from yesterday.
"You awake?" he asked, adding "Kidera says you most be ready to leave before sunrise."
I nodded, still too sleepy to talk. Getting up, I walked over to a water-bucket in the corner and plunged my head into it.
"Ah," I said when I pulled my head back up, "that feels a lot better."
I stripped of my shirt, and gave myself a quick wash, which wasn't easy with a broken left hand
"I feel uneasy when I don't know what to call people. You have a name?" I asked as I put my uniform back on again.
"For the time I'm called Bantam," he said, "since I'm the smallest pup. Of course, I’ll pick another name when I’m coming of age."
Bantam had brought some more food with him and placed it on the table, along with a bundle of grey fabric. As I started to eat, he spoke up.
"You must wear this clothing when you travel, Kidera says."
"Really?" I replied "And if I refuse?"
"Then we will make you wear it." came a voice from behind.
Both Bantam and I turned, seeing Kidera walking in through the flap of the tent. She gave a jerk with her hand, and Bantam left the tent. She sat down on the bench on the other side of the table, then opened her mouth.
"It is for your own protection, and ours. If you wear the same as the rest of us, and keep the hood up, it will be difficult to see that you are not a lupa."
While she talked I quietly resigned, and started pulling out of my uniform and into the coarse clothing. While the shirt was almost the right size, the breaches were short, ending well short of my feet. The rough, grey fabric rubbed against my skin, promising bruises if I walked too much in it
"So," I said, "where are you taking me dressed like this?"
"To see the empress. But first we must reach the city of Whitewater Ford."
I looked at Kidera, but didn't say anything.
"It really isn’t far," she continued, "about a day and a half marching."
"I limp when I walk." I pointed out "There is no way I can march for a day and a half with the wound I have."
Kidera stood up.
"We know." she said, something resembling a smile on her lips, "Now put on that cloak and follow me."
She led me in silence a little way out of the camp in the predawn gloom. Pointing to a line of four-wheeled wagons, she spoke up again.
"Our wounded rides in those. You will stay in the rearmost, together with two guards."
She gave me a push, and I climbed into the hay covered wagon.
Just before Kidera raised the rear, I asked "Why all this secrecy? If I am all you have to show for losing one out of three, you not parade me on the streets?"
"For your safety," she replied, "once people hear about our losses on your world, they may blame you."
"And I'm too valuable to risk?" I countered.
As she closed the wagon, she murmured "That too. We might need the knowledge you represent."
I sat down, taking care to put my right leg high, and waited. The day passed, hot and slow. I could see only see a little of what was on the outside of the wagon, and what I saw was mostly marching troopers, their tongues hanging out as they panted. The two guards that travelled in my wagon were sitting with their back turned, not talking neither to me, nor between themselves. The only thing that broke the monotonous silence was the occasional shouts of the ox-drivers. As the light was waning I noticed that the landscape was changing. No longer just a flat plain, it started getting a little hilly, and more bushes could be seen. The wagon slowed to a halt, and I heard the oxen being led off.
After waiting some minutes more I grew restless. The guards that had been sitting on the wagon all day had disappeared, and as the sun had fallen, almost all sounds from the troopers around me had died out. Just as I was about to rice up to take a look, a noise behind me in the wagon made my head spin round. It was Kidera, and for some reason I wasn’t too surprised. Silently she handed me some bread and a water-skin, and, more concerned about substance than conversation, I pulled down my hood and ate. As I finished off the last bit of bread I felt her moving closer to me. Suddenly I had her legs on either side of mine, her torso lightly touching my back and her arms around my belly. I tensed.
Placing her muzzle close to my ear, she softly said "You said yesterday that you would make it worthwhile for me if I gave you some information. Did you mean it?"
I lapsed into thought a long time before I answered.
"I did not plan on staying long enough for you to claim on that promise. But, here I am, and I have never gone back on my word before."
"I see." was all she said.
For a long time we sat in silence, and all I could sense was her arms around me, the soft fur of her muzzle and chin against my neck and the sound of her breathing in my ear. Somehow, it was feeling both scary and safe at the same time.
"I do make the claim on your promise," she whispered after a long time "and I claim it tonight."
I tensed again; hoping she would not ask for something I neither wanted, nor was ready for.
She continued; "Tell me about your world."
"I can’t." I replied, "If I tell you anything about our army, our people or our nations, you can use it against us. Even if it means I must break my word, I can not and I will not be a traitor."
"No silly. Your world, not the people on it. What’s it like to live on? How does it, I don’t know, feel?"
I fell silent for a long time, then started talking.
"It was the place I fitted in. I could sit outside, on nights like this, and watch the stars."
I pointed upwards as I spoke, my hand visible as a dark shadow against the rapidly darker sky.
"And I knew every constellations, by sight if not by name. It felt, how shall I say, right. Here on the other hand," I sighted, "the stars are unknown."
Kidera moved closer to me, pressing her body against mine. She nodded silently in the dark, her furry muzzle sliding up and down my neck. Then, as moisture gathered in my eyes, I started talking again. I told her about walking in the forests for hours, spending the nights in the mountains and long, slow afternoons basking in the ocean. I told her about the warm, dry summers and the long winters when all was covered in a thick layer of snow. I told her of the joy of the first flowers and the happiness of leaves changing colour in the autumn. I told her in lengths of children smiles, of lovers walking hand in hand and old couple’s pleasure in being together.
"All those things are lost to me now," I finished "lost just like the stars I once knew."
After I finally finished she was quiet for a very long time.
"It sounds like a place I could enjoy living in. You make is sound like home." she finally said.
I just nodded in the dark. Again she was quiet for a long time before she spoke in all but a whisper.
"You miss it?"
"Yes. It's more of me than I ever realized. I guess I never really thought about it when I lived there, but now, when all hope of returning is gone…"
I didn’t finish the sentence. Kidera hugged me even closer, muttering in my ear.
"You may be different in many ways Hans, but I too know loss. My betrothed did not come back from your world before the rift was closed."
I felt moisture running in her fur, spreading out as it meet my neck.
"I understand." I said, then thought about it a little while before I went on, "No, I can't claim to understand you. I have no idea of how you think, nor what emotions you lay in a betrothal, But I share your pain, as you share mine."
Again we lapsed into silence, and I stared unseeing at the unknown constellations as I thought about my loss. Suddenly Kidera moved. She gave me a quick kiss on the cheek, her lips felling at the same time familiar and alien, then stood up.
Speaking low, she said, "Thank you Hans. Now I know."
Then she disappeared out of the wagon and was gone, leaving me wondering what she had meant. I shrugged it off, and buried myself in hay, embracing sleep and oblivion.

I hope you enjoyed this early foray of mine into writing - more fantasy than science fiction, but hopefully enjoyable non the less.

The sound of a match scratching on a matchbox side sounded in the cold air wrapping Meadow in its grip. Small flame bursted out of the friction, and it quickly rose to light a cigarette on fire. Dima took in the smoke, then breathed it out. Blissfully, he sighed and leaned on the concrete wall behind him. Snow was falling down slowly, creating the perfect Christmas atmosphere. A cigarette in hand and some moonshine in his cup, a guard duty would go much faster this way, Dima thought. Good thing Valik had agreed to be on command post this day. Dima was nominally the second-in-charge of Redemption, but he wasn't really at his element as a leader. Boris, Dimuha and Valik handled it much better.
"Man, leading Redemption for that one week while Boris was out of the Zone was rough enough. Good thing he brought those cigars as compensation", Dima pondered out loud to himself.
"Are you going a bit loco on guard duty, mumbling to yourself?", a voice came from behind him.
Dima turned around, recognizing Sevka as the voice's origin. He raised his eyebrow at the Spanish stalker, but the reason for this sudden appearance was made apparent when Sevka poured him some more moonshine. Tooth sure had went all out with it this time, and there were liters of the stuff. Who knew you could use artefacts to make the process of creating alcohol faster? Dima offered Sevka a smoke, but the Spaniard declined and took a swig from his cup.
"Man, Christmas is right around the corner and we're out here basically doing the same shit all day long...", Sevka complained.
"Oh quit it, last Christmas me and Boris were leading a gigantic battle against Sin in Limansk and the Generators. This year our glorious leader even has time to go for a morning walk and us two can enjoy some moonshine for breakfast.", Dima replied.
"Any idea where Boris went, by the way?", Sevka prodded, but Dima only shook his head.
"There are things he prefers doing alone... Like the recent gig he did on the Big Land. I don't blame him, it was pretty personal matter, and I think this one may be too. Ah, anyway, good opportunity to drink a bit without Mr. Morality giving us a lecture on it.", Dima chuckled.
"Speaking of which, I knew this moonshine was almost as strong as your love for puns but am I hallucinating a dude approaching us from the other factories?", Sevka questioned, pointing at a figure emerging from the snowstorm.
Dima raised his Val at the lone traveller, and Sevka, without his shotgun at the time, took out his pistol quickly. The newcomer raised his hands and took a few steps closer, revealing a face with short stubble and a scientific suit underneath his travel overcoat. Doctor Oleg Zakarov smiled as he saw his Redemption friends once more, and Dima couldn't help but do so too. They shook hands, and the ecologist soon explained what he had come here for. While Redemption was settled in the main factory, there were other ones behind it, mostly left to their own devices bar a scavenging party now and then. Zakarov however had found a note on a dead stalker's PDA, dating all the way back to 2012. On it, the stalker detailed an ambush by a ceiling-bound creature which led to the death of multiple stalkers and the mutant.
"Uh-huh. I've heard a similar tall tale. What's it got to do with us?", Dima asked.
"I've visited multiple factory areas matching the description, from Yantar to West Yantar, dropped by Kruglov's lab, then to Rostok and Wild Territory to Lost Factory, then Dark Valley... Nothing. Nada. Now I'm stopping by here, and then continuing to Proving Grounds and Borderguard. Have you guys noticed anything going on in the other factories? Any strange noises, shadows, movement at odd times of day?", Zakarov asked.
"You think a group of meanest sons of bitches would not investigate if there is something strange in their neighbourhood?", Dima responded.
"Hey now, just a routine question. Anyway, you two want to join me on a stroll through them?", Zakarov asked, and both Dima and Sevka looked at each other until Sevka nodded.
"Eh, what the hell. Nothing better to do while we wait for old Grumpy to return...", Dima sighed and radioed a replacement for him on the guard post.
Once a somewhat annoyed looking Felka had taken Dima's place as the primary gatekeeper of Meadow, the trio set off into the other factory area. They circled along the fence, passing an old office and entered the other, large hall, one covered in dust and broken machinery. The three stalkers lit up their flashlights and passed through the ominously dark complex. Footsteps echoed on concrete, dust rose with each step. Then, a shadow moved. It was at the edge of the big hall, emerging from the dark like a spectre. By reflex more than concious thought, Dima's Val rose up high, and a series of suppressed gunshots joined the echoing footsteps. Two Saigas from his both flanks let loose a salvo of buckshot and slug, and the shadow let out a shriek that seemed to burst into the very skulls of the three stalkers.
Dima could barely keep the Val in his hands, as they were pounded by the vocal barrage. Fighting the soundwaves pounding his skull, Dima raised his Val once more, and let out a burst that emptied his magazine. The creature flung towards them and met the heavy rifle bullets midway, screeching one last time before crashing to the floor. Panting, Dima loaded a new magazine and was preparing to let loose another firestorm, when Zakarov stopped him, out of breath but professional as ever.
"This... Is it. The... Beast I was... Hunting. Don't shoot it, we... Need it... Intact.", Zakarov managed to huff, and Dima lowered his rifle.
"What the fuck was it?", Dima asked, but Zakarov had already taken out a handheld radio.
"Professor, we have it in the bag. Bring the bird over, we found Mimicry.", Zakarov spoke into it, now having regained his composure.
Half an hour later, three figures emerged from the Garbage entrance. One had the strongest armour among Redemption ranks, the Absolver Nosorog, signature battleplate of Boris Unforgiven. Right behind him, a man walked in quite similar suit, albeit far more sophisticated. Instead of the MASKA helmet and reinforced front plate, it had a skull-shaped helmet and a massive Barrett rifle attached to the shoulder like a tank's battlecannon. Behind them, another stalker followed. A worn trenchcoat hid beneath it a curiously coloured Skat-9 suit, but the rare ADS rifle hanging from his side was more than enough to tell how experience this stalker was.
"...And that's how we dealt with UNISG. True story.", Boris finished his tale.
"Sounds like bullshit if I'm 100% honest.", Doctor Alexei Markov commented.
"I agree, but I happen to know this to be true.", Codex, the man in Skat armour continued.
"And how exactly do you know this? Only boys in my faction and SSU know this.", Boris questioned.
"A magician never reveals his tricks.", Codex said mischievously.
"Difference between science and "magic", right here.", Markov replied, and Codex only shrugged.
"Aaand here we are. Welcome to Meadow, gentlemen. The pearl of the Zone!", Boris announced, and the factory area spread out right in front of them.
"Personally, I prefer Industrial Zone. But it's quite quaint.", Codex stated.
"Wait a minute. Is that an ecologist helicopter over there?", Markov said, and Boris saw his Barrett slide into position so the scientist could take a look through the scope.
"Show-off.", Boris chuckled to Codex.
"I'll pretend I didn't hear that. Now, that looks like the Mi-2 the Yantar bunker uses. But what are they doing here?", Markov pondered out loud.
"We did invite some people over to Meadow over the Christmas, but none of the ecologists could make it, or so they said. Personally I just think they wouldn't have known how to act in a party", Boris joked.
"Oh man, you clearly have not seen Sakharov drink... Anyway, let's see what's going on.", Markov replied and broke into a sprint, his heavy boots thumping as he went.
His companions followed suit, and they soon arrived to the yard, where a group of Ecologists and Redemption members had gathered around a corpse. Markov's and Boris' suit sounds alerted the gathered Zone-dwellers turned to look at them. There were eleven people here, Professor Sakharov among them sticking out like a sore thumb in his labcoat. There was also two SSP-clad scientists next to him, one that Boris recognized as Oleg Zakarov, his old friend. Besides them was a free stalker and Dutyer, the free stalker sporting a mean grenade launcher while the Dutyer had, uncharacteristically, a F2000 rifle, or tactical tuna, as the young ones among Redemption called them. On the Redemption side, present were Dimuha, Dima, Sanyok, Vityukha and the ex-UNISG troops, Dimka and Sevka.
"Markov! What the hell are you doing here in the ass end of nowhere?", the Dutyer shouted.
"Oi, fuck you, this is our home!", Dima shouted back.
"Rats call trashbins their home too, doesn't them any more invi-", the Dutyer replied.
"What in the name of Chernobog's cancer-ridden cock is that?", Boris exclaimed, seeing the mutant corpse.
It was indeed an unnerving sight. A face with some human features, but deeply mutated, two fangs protruding out of its mouth, otherwise it was quite controller-like. It had wings that resembled those of a bat, spreading from its knees all the way to the hands. It was of squat stature, but clearly a fearsome killer. There were bits missing where large-calibre bullets had struck.
"A mimicry. Dangerous mutant, capable of imitating humans or blasting them with such immense noise that it may cause fainting or even death. Truly rare beast, and like I mentioned earlier to you two, a lover of the underground.", Codex explained.
"And how exactly do you know this, young man?", Sakharov asked, having nodded at Markov and then turned his attention to Codex once he opened his mouth.
"I know plenty. Bits and bobs I've gathered from the locals. But enough about me, am I correct in presuming this mighty thing brought you here, scientist commander?", Codex replied, studying the grey-haired ecologist with his gaze.
"This, and right now, the snowstorm. It is the worst seen in decades, and no aircraft will fly on this weather. This fine upstanding youngster here told me of your little get-together coming up, so we decided to stick around.", Sakharov commented, pointing at Dima who looked slighly offended at being called a youngster.
"C'mon Papa, we all heard you mumble how you'd rather be in the bunker just now.", the other scientist besides Sakharov chuckled, and Sakharov coughed.
"This doesn't explain why you three are here. Did I not tell you to stay in Yantar while I was on my business?", Markov asked his companions.
"One can only shoot so many snorks to pass time before it gets boring. Besides, we had to make sure the old man doesn't get beaten up by these ruffians.", the Dutyer replied with a smirk.
"I told you Vadim, these are our associates, not ruffians. At least you aren't fiddling your grenade launcher like Mikhail over there. As for Tatyana, leaving her around Yantar with those insolent mercs is not acceptable.", Sakharov growled, and Boris could see Markov extinguish a grin.
"Good to see you again, Professor. And Zakarov too. Welcome to Meadow, rest of you, I'm Boris Unforgiven, leader of Redemption, and this here is Codex. I presume Dima has introduced himself and the rest? You can never know with him.", Boris continued.
"Tatyana, Mikhail and Vadim are those three. Tatyana has the brains, Vadim has the brawn and Mikhail has a grenade launcher.", Markov commented.
"But about those guests of ours... You ecologists should know that-", Boris began, but was cut off by a shout coming from behind.
"Oi Olivius, look at this, the teletubbies have invaded Meadow!", the voice, who Boris recognized as Shishak, rang over the factory.
Faster than eye could see, Markov turned around, and the Barrett slid into position. Boris grabbed the barrel as quickly as he could, pulling it down at the last second so the gigantic bullet struck the ground. Markov's angry eyes met his, but Boris tried his best to put on a placative look.
"They're our guests. I know, bandits are assholes, but them being here keeps Redemption out of a war with them. We need good relations or my men perish in an useless war.", Boris said quietly.
"If you need any more convincing, know that Boris is behind the death of last bandit leader. He knows them inside out.", Codex whispered too, and slowly, Markov's Barrett slid back into locked position.
"This once, I'll give you a chance to prove that you can control them. But one wrong move from those scum, and I'll cave their heads in.", Markov said between his teeth.
"What kind of welcome is that, Iron Man? Don't like the neighbourhood, then get out. Oh yeah, forgot about the mega-blizzard, my bad.", Shishak sneered, having joined the conversation.
"Alright Shishak, shut the hell up. These are our guests just the same, so unless you want to be thrown out in turn, zip it.", Boris threatened, and the bandit leader simply scoffed.
"Fine, but I require moonshine as compensation. Alright Olivius, to the bar we go!", Shishak announced, and dragging somewhat embarassed looking Olivius with him, they went towards the sound of music blasting from 3.6 Röntgen bar.
"What next? Monolith barge into here to drink vodka and sit down on Christmas dinner with us?", Vadim quipped.
"Well... Not quite, but close.", Sanyok chuckled.
"Boris?", Codex asked, raising his brow at the Redemption leader.
"Strider and some of his deconverted men are stopping by. No Barrett-play at them, they've had their Monolith rehab and are completely sane.", Dima commented.
"Right, and moon is cheese.", Mikhail sneered.
"I've heard of this. We'll see for ourselves soon enough, I guess.", Markov replied.
"Enough talk. The blizzard will start soon, let us move this specimen inside, gentlemen!", Sakharov ordered, having watched the conversation keenly.
Fifteen minutes passed, and the mimicry corpse was taken inside the factory. Once the grunting and hard work had ended, and the corpse was placed inside the administrative building, the rag-tag group of various stalkers and scientists entered the factory itself. Boris couldn't help but smile slightly as he saw the Ecologist entourages reaction to the factory area. Toshka had worked day and night to prepare the place for Christmas, even down to cutting down a spruce and making Stepukha drag it inside. There was a long, wooden table assembled from pretty much every table Redemption had. On top of it, vodka, moonshine, grilled boar and flesh and dozens of different foods had been placed. There was even a couple smoked salmon plates Tooth had painstakingly gotten delivered out of the Big Land.
The 3.6 Röntgen bar had been filled to brim with various exotic drinks and alcohol brands, all glasses and mugs polished and turned upside down. Tooth was manning the bar as per usual, and the grumpy ex-bandit seemed quite cheery. Shishak and Olivius were already downing drinks as quickly as they came. They were struggling to keep up with Stepukha, Redemption's designated drunkard, however. There was an aroma of burning firewood in the air, and Boris spotted some of the Redemption rookies going around, putting more fuel to the hungry stoves. Redemption members had already gathered around the table, chatting, boasting, telling stories and jokes. One by one, the newcomers joined in, until only Boris, Markov and Codex remained near the bar.
"Quite the place you have here, Boris. Tell me, how did a renegade build up such a community from scratch?", Markov asked. "Oh, far too early for such a story. Wait until I get some beer into my machine beforehand. Alternatively, ask Codex, he probably has my entire story memorized word for word.", Boris laughed.
"No, only bits of it. Even I am not omniscient.", Codex said with a sly smile, as if it had been some clever inside joke.
Outside, the blizzard had turned extremely dense, with snow piling up on the asphalt in a thick layer. Temperature dropped down, and grey clouds rolled in as a massive wall overtaking the sky. Boris looked outside with concerned expression, scratched his beard and turned to his newfound companions.
"I believe this will be quite the dangerous storm. What say you, should we broadcast an announcement that Meadow will be a temporary safe zone for those caught up in the storm?", Boris suggested.
"We already have the bandits, how much worse can the crowd get? But no proper renegades, I have bad memories of them.", Markov responded.
"I agree on the plan. Given how the Zone never rests, there is bound to be people stuck in the cold even on Christmas.", Codex chimed in.
Nodding, Boris walked up to the bar table and requested Tooth to hand him the transmitter. Tooth gave him a somewhat puzzled look under his ushanka, but did as ordered. Boris opened it, set the frequency to that used as the Zone's "open to everyone" channel. Usually bandit used it to transmit hardbass, or Freedom and Duty blasted propaganda on it, but now it was quite silent. Boris spoke:
"Attention, Chernobyl veterans, cold-blooded comrades and whoever else. This is Boris Unforgiven speaking. As you may have noticed, it's a bit chilly outdoors, so if you happen to be stuck in the storm, come to Meadow. We have arranged a temporary ceasefire over here, nobody will be shot. Think of it as a Christmas truce. Renegades, Black Slugs, Monolith, Sinners and Futility assholes get a complementary Christmas bullet as a bundle. Boris Unforgiven out."
Codex suggested that they grab some drinks while they wait, and Markov said it was the best idea of the day. Minutes passed, and roughly fifteen minutes later, first invited guests arrived. Three men in gray trenchcoats, and one in a brown overcoat, VSS rifle hanging from his side, among them. The man in the brown coat nodded to Boris, and Boris nodded back with a smile on his face.
"Good day, uh, Tutor. How goes it? Glad to see you made it, and even brought friends.", Boris greeted the newcomers.
"Thanks, bratan. These are my friends from North Hills. Let's just say that they have very close connection to the local nature.", Tutor replied.
"Hm. Druids, I presume?", Codex asked.
"Shamans, Druids, we go by many names. As do you, archivist.", one of the graycoats responded.
"Indeed. Welcome, brothers. Have something to eat and drink.", Codex said, and the guests joined in on the feasting.
"That Tutor fella looks familiar. Do I know him from somewhere?", Markov asked.
"I doubt it. He is, heh, scarcely know in these parts.", Boris chuckled, and Codex groaned at his pun.
"You two are real mischievous urods, it's quite insufferable.", Markov commented dryly.
"Just wait until Dima starts making puns, then you understand the meaning of insufferable. But hey, more people!", Boris said, grabbing another beer.
Five men in black-gray suits marched in, their movements somewhat machine-like. Led by a man with short hair and deadpan expression, they stopped by the door. Their suits were clearly of Monolith origin, but there was no fanatism in their eyes. The inhuman tone of their voices lingered still, as Strider, leader of Noon, spoke:
"Greetings, Boris. Long time no see, friend. And judging by your helmet, you're Dr. Markov?", Strider asked.
"The one and only. You know of me?", Markov replied.
"Many of my comrades have faced you in battle. Before their regaining of self, of course. We hold no grudges, of course. Actually, we hold you in high regard, one of the best the Zone ever had.", Strider said bluntly.
"Stop, you're making me blush. But thank you. I hold no grudges on your men either then. And welcome in, have some grub after the long walk.", Markov offered, and the ex-Monolithians joined their Redemption brothers in the table.
"Psoglav loves those guys.", Boris commented.
”Psoglav?”, Codex asked.
”Our ex-Sinner technician.”, Boris replied as nonchalantly as possible.
”This keeps getting weirder and weirder.”, Markov muttered.
They began discussing the nuances of Monolith brainwash and its limits, and deep into the conversation, they missed the next arrivals until those quite literally came next to them and ordered beer.
"Chilly weather out, isn't it?", a Freedomer Boris recognized as Leshiy said. "Chilly indeed. Welcome in, did you come alone?", Codex asked.
"Nah, Grishka and Danila went on the table already. By the looks of it, they're already picking fights with the Dutyer, bless them. Oh, and there goes, bottle right to Grishka's noggin. Sorry for barging in, but it was preferable to freezing our asses off. Now, if you excuse me, I'll go stop that little argument.", Leshiy said, and soon he was settling the fight that had almost broken out.
"That was quick.", Boris commented.
"Leshiy likes doing things efficiently.", Markov agreed.
Soon after the two ideologues had calmed down, more Dutyers moved in too. Captain Orlov, Boris' old associate, had come invited, and brought some of his most non-strict Duty comrades with him. Soon, Freedom and Duty sat on both sides of the table, chucking down drinks like old mates. There were some soldiers among them, who Boris recognized as military stalkers. One of them walked over to where Dimka was sitting, and they exchanged some words. Boris saw that this particular military stalker was named Fedorov, and remembered him as the man who had escorted Dimka back to Meadow long ago. Apparently his good experience with Redemption had lasted beyond that one mission they did with the army.
"Military? Army dogs taking every chance to leave their asshole commanders, I see.", Markov remarked.
"Military stalkers are a whole other breed. Some of them are alright, believe it or not.", Codex said in turn.
"I'm not drunk enough to believe that, bratan.", Boris snorted.
"Let's see... Technically we're only missing free stalkers, Clear Sky and mercs.", Codex commented, scanning the group.
"Wouldn't be so sure of that!", a voice announced, and Boris turned on his stool to see Wolf, the legendary free stalker, followed by six others.
There was Fanatic and another free stalker with him, both in Sunrise suits, and three Clear Sky members. One of them had a similar suit to Sanyok, which Boris recalled to be named Hybrid Alpha. The others were in typical Clear Sky operative armours.
"Wolf, ya old bastard, I knew you wouldn't miss it!", Boris laughed, and they shook hands.
"Uh, looks like you got some esteemed guests. Markov, Codex, evening. We found these Clear Sky guys close by, apparently they got lost in the snow. Thought we'd invite them here as we heard the call.", Wolf replied, and Boris' drinking buddies raised their drinks. "Welcome in, then, to the Clear Sky guys too!", Boris replied, and the squadleader nodded to him gratefully before the loner-Clear Sky coalition went to the tables.
Boris suggested that they bet whether mercs show up or not. Codex took the bet, Markov did as well. Only Boris voted for the mercs to not show up. They didn't have to wait long for him to lose however, as a detachment of mercs marched into the base. They were led by a guy carrying a massive sniper rifle, while his buddy in exoskeleton had a German machine gun and another was carrying enough explosions for a small mining company. Their squad was not the only mercs to arrive though, as another guy came alone, Brazilian Taurus revolver hanging from his hip. The storm had shaken them off course, but Meadow's message had lured them in. Boris welcomed them in as well, and soon the mercs had settled around the table, joining the growing chatter.
"Looks like we've got quite the representation here.", Markov said.
"Truly indeed. Never thought I'd see such a day.", Codex continued.
"I'd say it's about time we join 'em. Shall we, gentlemen?", Boris asked, and as one, they rose from their seats.

2022.11.29 15:01 Noblesse311 Character Concept [89]: HMCS Bonaventure

Faction:
Maple Monarchy (Dominion of Canada)

Class:
Majestic-class Light Aircraft Carrier

Background:
The third and final aircraft carrier commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy (and the fifth and final operated by them), HMCS Bonaventure began life as HMS Powerful, laid down on 21 November 1943 in Belfast’s Harland & Wolff Shipyard as HMS Powerful, a part of the second batch of the Colossus-class (which would become known as the Majestic-class) to serve as disposable Light Fleet Carriers for World War II. Though she would be launched on 27 February 1945, the end of the war meant that construction would be suspended, with the hull laid up as incomplete.
In 1952, the Royal Canadian Navy sought to purchase HMS Powerful to serve as a replacement for her sister ship HMCS Magnificent, formerly of the same name under the “HMS” banner, and allocated $21 million for its purchase on 23 April. \1]) Work would resume from the end of 1952, incorporating many of the design features that came about since work was halted in 1946, including an angled flight deck, steam catapults, \2]) and American made radar and defensive armament. Construction was completed and the ship would be commissioned as HMCS Bonaventure on 17 January 1957, with trials in the English Channel that March with her aircraft before setting sail from Britain to Halifax, Nova Scotia in June 1957, carrying the experimental hydrofoil HMCS Bras d’Or on her flight deck.
Bonaventure’s early career was met with a number of trials and exercises, of which in 1958, several F2H-3 Banshees \3]) flying from the carrier were lost, with at least three pilots killed or lost at sea. Bonaventure would also encounter a Soviet submarine off the Great Banks of Newfoundland while patrolling around a group of Russian fishing trawlers.
In 1960, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) reorganized their tactics for the defense of the North Atlantic, and Canada’s contribution would be to create an Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Hunter-Killer group centered around HMCS Bonaventure as its flagship, utilizing the use of its F2H Banshees for fighter cover, while the ASW work would be done by the CS2F (later CP-121) Trackers \4]) and HO4S-3 Chickasaw Helicopters. \5]) This state of affairs would remain until the F2H-3 was withdrawn from service on 30 November 1962, transforming Bonaventure into a purely ASW aircraft carrier. She would play a fairly minor role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, being recalled to Canada in the belief of a possible war breaking out, and was refitting following the crisis in 1963 to allow for the operation of the newer CHSS-2 (later CH-124) Sea King \6]) A second refit in 1966 was made to extend the carrier’s service life, with ultimately failed plans to replace the F2H-3 with the A-4 Skyhawk.
However with the unification of all branches of the military into a singular Canadian Armed Forces in 1968, all naval aviation was placed under the jurisdiction of the Armed Forces’ Air Command. The following year, as the Canadian military sought to cut defense spending, HMCS Bonaventure was considered surplus and the last deck landing aboard Bonaventure would take place on 12 December 1969. Bonaventure was decommissioned on 3 July 1970 and was sold to a scrapping company in Taiwan in 1971.
Her two anchors are in display, with the port anchor, known as Bonaventure Anchor Memorial, located at Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, Nova Scotia, while the starboard anchor, donated by Maritime Command, is on display at Royal Military College Saint-Jean in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. The ship’s bell is preserved at the Shearwater Aviation Museum in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, alongside a large model and exhibit on Canada’s final aircraft carrier.
\1]: During this timeframe, Canada was also offered the then-incomplete Centaur-class Light Aircraft Carrier HMS Hermes from the United Kingdom, while the United States offered to loan two Essex-class Aircraft Carriers, both were turned down, citing prohibitive costs, while Powerful was chosen for its inexpensiveness coupled with financial support from the U.K.)
\2]: The first two design changes cost a further $10 million.)
\3]: Redesignated as the F-2C by the U.S. Navy after 1962, the Banshee was the final carrier-launch capable aircraft in RCN service, though they would later operate the CF-188 [or CF-18] Hornet, which retained the CATOBAR capabilities of its U.S. Navy counterpart, the F/A-18A/B..)
\4]: The CS2F is a Canadian variant of the S2F-1 [after 1962, the S-2A] Tracker, with three variants largely unique to Canada. In 1968, they would be redesignated the CP-121 after the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces into a single unit.)
\5]: Known after 1962 as the UH-19F in the U.S. Navy, the Chickasaw was primarily used as a Search-and-Rescue Helicopter as the HO4S-2, the -3 variant would be the one commonly used as its two surviving -2’s were converted to -3 standard.)
\6]: The CHSS-2, later the CH-124 is a Canadian made variant [as in, built by the United Aircraft of Canada] of the Silkorsky SH-3 Sea King, and was made to replace the HO4S in the ASW role. The type would be completely replaced in 2018 with the CH-148 Cyclone, a derivative of the S-92/VH-92 Superhawk.)

Namesake:
Bonaventure is named for Bonaventure Island (French: Île Bonaventure). Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, off the coast of Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, it is a roughly circular island that is home to over 200 species of birds and served as an inspiration for many a poet or artist who comes here. Originally home to a fishing port, the island became a migratory bird sanctuary in 1919 as a result of the Migratory Bird Convention of 1916 between Canada and the United States. By 1971, an act of expropriation by the Québécois provincial government evicted all peoples living on the island, roughly 35 families. Finally in 1985, the island would merge with Rocher Percé to become the Bonaventure Island and Percé Rock National Park. Today, Bonaventure Island is a popular tourist destination, with boat and island tours from May to October every year.

Rarity:
SSR

Stat Spread:
As a Majestic-class Light Aircraft Carrier, her stat spread matches those of her Majestic-class sister ships. Bonaventure sports above average HP (B). Her Anti-Air is also fairly good (B), and her Aviation stat is also similar (A). Bonaventure has fairly low speed however (D).

Abilities:

Personality:
Bonaventure is to put simply, one who is at peace with nature. She’s often fond of outdoor adventures like camping, hiking or running through the fields. She’s a friend to animals, and in particular birds, and enjoys the company of those who enjoy nature as well (such as Shangri-La)

Quotes:

Design:
Bonaventure is depicted as a woman in her late teens with reddish-orange hair and forest green eyes. Her attire, in a similar fashion to that of half-sister HMS Perseus and Illustrious-class carrier HMS Victorious, a low-cut white dress with detached flowing open sleeves and red trim around the base of the dress. On her head is a wreath of red maple leaves. White stockings and black shoes round out the attire. In her hand is a staff made of red maple with three maple leaves surrounded by a copper ring at the top.
Bonaventure’s rigging is, in typical 1942 Design Light Fleet Carrier fashion, in this case a red ribbon attached to her dress with a black top depicting a runway. Flying overhead is a pair of F2H-3 (F-2C) Banshee fighters, which was the chief naval fighter used by Canada at the time.

A/N:
This ship was suggested to me by u/Shadowrunner724. I hope you enjoy this design as I did making it.
Bonaventure Island was already enough to sell the kind of character I want to make, and the only reason I didn't give her an ability named Gaia's Vengeance is because...not sure how'd that work in a setting at sea, but that's beside the point. She's a lover of nature and is not one who will take kindly to its devastation, so Sirens watch out, lest you want to see a Banshee come to run wild on you.
If you want to suggest a ship or retrofit in the future, please leave it in the comments below, you can also reach me via DM's to make your suggestions as well. Next time, we're taking a look at the only retrtofit concept for Operation Iéna. (unless they drop Alsace for Christmas, at this point, I dunno what to believe anymore) We're retrofitting Iris' Cardinal herself, FFNF Richelieu. Spoiler Alert: Her retro will be a fairly unique one, I hope you like Iowa '80!

2022.11.20 07:58 RolandMT32 Some joystick controls not working in most recent update

I've been playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 for PC (on Windows) since it came out. I've installed the most recent update, and I'm experiencing a problem - I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick, and now when I increase the throttle, the airplane's engine speed goes up as I'm increasing the throttle on the joystick, but when I'm done, the engine speed immediately goes back down to the lowest value, so now I can't take off.
Also, I tried the Spruce Goose (Hercules), but for that specific aircraft, it seemed there was no way to release the parking brake. Normally, joystick button 11 on this joystick does it, but nothing happened, and I couldn't get the Spruce Goose to move.

2022.11.16 16:56 boryenkavladislav Can i self-install a Garmin Flight Stream 510 into a GTN750 in a certified aircraft?

I'm looking to purchase the Garmin Flight Stream 510 and put it into a GTN750 running software version 6.72. I've found some info out there that says this SD card has to be locked to the system ID of the GTN750 by a Garmin dealer, according to FAQs on Aircraft Spruce, but you may be able to self-install if you're flying an experimental. If I buy this and drop it in the SD card slot of the GTN750, will it work plug-and-play style? Does anyone have experience with this?

2022.11.12 02:41 AspiringSkrimper Jet Engine Sounds With New Prop Planes

Anybody else having this issue?
Since installing the 40th anniversary update today, I tried out the Spruce Goose and the DC3. The weird thing is, when going into external view, the sound effects are that of a jet engine, sounds like an Airbus or Boeing. Not sure what's going on.
Another thing is the A310 - I can't seem to throttle down, though I'm assuming that has something to do with it being a study-level aircraft.
The sound effects really have me miffed though. Any thoughts?

[Stowa] Klassik Flieger 40 #FliegerFridays

New watch day! The mail came early, and with it - a new (to me) watch - something I've been drooling over for some time now: Stowa's Flieger Klassic 40 - no date, no logo iteration. I think the no date, no logo version just feels like the most traditional and authentic look. I personally don't care that much for the new Stowa logo either - maybe if it had the old Stowa logo, I'd go for that. But honestly, probably not as I like the sterile dial look.
I've only recently gotten into watches (within the past year or so maybe) and I've had my eye on getting a flieger to add to my starter collection. Story behind it: My grandpa was big into planes, and although he was never a pilot (due to a leg injury when he was in college), he spent as much time around them as possible. After retiring, he spent over 15 years volunteering at the Spruce Goose Evergreen Aviation Museum. Gramps got to help rebuild lots of cool aircraft and helped with the transporting of new planes to the museum as well. Was very handy and a former mechanic. Plus he was a whiz at Microsoft Flight simulator, which, counts for something too. Anyways, after he passed away several years back, I wanted to get a watch to commemorate and honor him with. A classic flieger watch was the obvious choice.
I spent a good deal of time debating over getting a Laco vs. Stowa. A Big Pilot IWC would be awesome, but a bit out of my price-range for now. So Laco or Stowa it would have to be. After much deliberation, I decided to go with Stowa. Seems like Stowa has hit the nail on the head with not only being authentic to the history, but making little improvements to fit the modern audience as well - without going overboard. I love the fit, feels great on wrist. Love the simple dial. And the blued steel hands, when they hit the light just right - mmmhmmm! *chef's kiss*
I have a feeling this fella will be my daily wearer for some time. Anyways, thx for reading, and I'm over the moon to officially join the other flieger enthusiasts out there! #FliegerFridays
