Shipping containers are ubiquitous parts of the shipping industry. More recently, shipping containers are being used as storage, habitable buildings and even as building material for larger structures, like restaurants or hotels. But shipping containers were not always the omnipresent cargo boxes that dominate the dockyards as they do today.
In fact, shipping was handled entirely without them for most of oceanic shipping’s history. Shipping containers and the resulting “containerization” of the shipping industry were both relatively recent innovations that transformed the global economy and allowed for unprecedented development, low shipping costs, and a complete reinvention of oceanic shipping.
Let’s break down the history of shipping containers and examine the figures, developments, and decisions that led to the intermodal and worldwide containerized shipping system that all developed nations use to this day.

The First Transported Container

On 26th April 1956 the ‘Ideal X' was the first freighter to transport goods using McLean's new shipping containers. The ship transported 58 of the shipping containers from Newark to Houston. Shortly afterwards the first ship designed purely for carrying shipping containers the ‘Maxton', which could carry 60 shipping containers as deck cargo, was put into service.
In order to ensure that's McLeans new shipping containers could travel across the globe, and be handled at every port, it was necessary for the containers to be built to a specific standard and that every container built the world over met this exact specification. Eventually after many negotiations, an international standard was agreed the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) which set the shipping containers at lengths of 10', 20', 30' and 40', a width of 8', and a height of 8'6”.

Early ISO Shipping Container Designs

Patented in 1956 after numerous tests, the first ISO container was born. It was stackable and built with steel. Reinforced corners made it possible to stack the containers without causing damage. They were uniform in size, theft-proof and easy to load.
Dockworkers at the time, known as longshoremen, went on strike. They realised loading containers onto ships would require a smaller workforce. It was this downtime that enable McLean to refine his designs.
McLeans big new idea was a success. He negotiated with the New York Port Authority to convert the New Jersey side of the harbour into a container port. The business would grow steadily over next ten years.

I’m trying to help my parents who were just scammed. They drained all their accounts thinking that their computer IP was hacked and was used to purchase $10k in child porn and the authorities would be at their door any moment. My dad is a Vietnam vet who’s 100% disable connected to his service and was just diagnosed a couple weeks ago with stage 3 cancer. He just started radiation treatment this week. My dad is weak and my mom is exhausted from traveling back and forth from the VA hospital. I live in another state and I’m not sure how to help them. My mother wired money from a kiosk and says she doesn’t have a receipt. I had her call money gram but they aren’t able to help her without that information. She also used her credit cards to buy Home Depot gift cards and sent the person the numbers on the cards. I’m having her call her card companies. I’m also having her call her bank. She doesn’t know how she’s going to pay their bills. I’m not in the financial place to help them. What else can I do? My dad is set to start chemo and radiation this week and they aren’t going to be able to afford anything connected to his treatment as well as just day to day living. What else can I do to try to help them retrieve as much as possible?

Hi! I want to get a shop vac, I read that Ridgid is a reliable, durable brand, but I want something compact, is that particular model a good idea for home use and small renovation projects?
My main concern is the filter: it's a different model from the one used in larger shop vacs, for now it's readily available on Amazon, but I don't know if 5 years from now it's still gonna be the case.
Also, on Home Depot that blue filter is not rated for drywall dust, but every other source says that it is, so I don't know what to think of that. Would you be fine using that filter for drywall work, and also cleaning soot from a fireplace?

So this is extraordinarily bad. Our doors keep randomly unlocking on us and today our tailgate opened at Home Depot while we were in the store. Doors were still locked.
We thought it might be the keychain holder we had so we took it out last night and it still happened.

I’ll go first. To preface, both DH and I have ADHD. Yesterday, I purchased bins to finish a project in our sons room (reorganizing toys, yay). I had a few things to do before I got started on that so I did those while DH took our oldest son to Home Depot to get sandpaper so he could finish his project he’d been doing all day. They get home and instead of sandpaper, they come home with a Betta fish and new rocks/decorations for the fish tank we’ve had but haven’t used in almost a year. Okay cool, we’d talked about getting another fish, no big. BUT I had no idea where the light or the filter was for the old fish tank. Sent them back to the pet store for a filter and betta food. I’m looking at the PetSmart website and am talking with DH while he’s at the store telling him what to get, he says he can’t find it so he’ll send me down there later. I decide to do a pick up order and spend about $20 on a new filter. Then I realize I order it from PetSmart but the pet store next to our house is PetCo! 🤦‍♀️ Then I do an order for PetCo for a new filter. While we’re waiting for that, we go in our sons room to find the light. We find it no problem then look a bit more for the filter (mind you I’d already looked in all the places I could think of that I’d put it for safe keeping). And what do you know, we find it in their closet where I’d already looking! 🤦‍♀️ So now we just need replacement filters. I go and get those and finally set up the tank. Meanwhile I still have two pick up orders I still have to cancel. So yea, super ADHD day from both of us. Oh and no, they never made it to Home Depot for sandpaper 😂

I've read plenty of advice on this sub from "don't be late" to "shut up and listen", but I'm looking for more practical advice. My local has a direct entry program for vets and I'd rather not look completely incompetent on day one considering the only kind of construction I've done is assembling freaking ikea furniture. Are there any back to the basics projects out there to help a brand new guy learn the ropes? Thinking of something with pallets since I could grab a few from Home Depot, and I only have basic hand tools but could borrow a circular saw if needed.

After I was SA’d my mom said I was playing the victim. I begged her to make phone calls because it was too much stress for me. She said “this is your thing not mine.” she said I shouldn’t hate him and if I don’t forgive and let go, I’ll be miserable my whole life. My dad said rapists should be forgiven. He also said “you’ve been reading too much woke bullshit.” He forced himself on me anyways no matter how much I cried. He would give me back rubs and touch my thighs, mimicking my abuser as revenge. I quit my job at Home Depot because a customer pulled his dick out at the register. The other female employee brushed it off but I couldn’t. I reached out to job & family services for help finding a job without a male customer base. The lady there judged me for being so weak. She said “oh come on, you can’t let these things get to you.”
I became homeless to flee my dad. My half sister (let’s call her Emma) begrudgingly let me stay with her. My other half sister (let’s say Hannah) was looking up SA lawyers for me, because I asked her to. It’s really hard for me to make those phone calls due to PTSD/panic attacks. Emma treated me like trash and gave me a nasty speech about how I don’t know how to be an adult, I don’t know what it’s like to work, and that Hannah is only helping me because I’m too lazy and refuse to help myself. I’ve been working since I was 16 and she knows that. I said “I’m asking her for help because it takes weight off my shoulders, it doesn’t mean I’m incapable.” Emma said “Ohhh really? So I can text her right now and tell her to stop then?” I said “If that’s what you really want to do...” so Emma pulled up her phone to text Hannah. I called Hannah and she said she never received such a text. Now I don’t know who is lying. Either way though, I don’t care. What the fuck? So I left the next day. That wasn’t the only manipulative and rude thing Emma did. She said “you’re almost 25 you can’t play the victim forever!” She only said “playing the victim” to hurt me. I naively confided in her earlier how much it hurt when my mom said those words. Mistake. See how our vulnerabilities WILL be used against us?
I mustered up the courage to make a police report. The cop said it was all my fault for not saying “no” or “stop” to my uncle groping me. That my uncle would reasonably believe it’s ok unless I said stop. He said “your case isn’t going anywhere” and “next time, how about about you don’t wait so long.” then hung up. Never heard from him again. He blamed me for waiting 6 months to report. I’m still unemployed, still haven’t found a lawyer (for both my uncle and to sue that cop) because it’s too much stress. All I do is sleep and eat garbage wasting away. My parents and sisters are dead to me. My aunts and uncles still hang out with my abuser uncle knowing what he did. Dead to me. I have no one left to trust and no help. Not that I’d take “help” anymore anyways. What a fucking waste of time. I learned these lessons the hard way. Keep any insecurities or vulnerabilities to yourself. It’s only fuel for others to take advantage of. I guess file a police report but not without recording every conversation and phone call. Cops are corrupt on a level I never imagined. They won’t show it if there’s evidence. Both men and women change up their whole attitude and behaviors if you’re alone. It’s always when alone. Doesn’t matter who it is. “Trusted” family, friends, working professionals, no one is actually on your side. It’s a facade.

Looking for restaurant restroom door lock that locks automatically on the outside when customers leave and close the door to keep hobos/non-customers out. Would prefer a key solution so customers have to request restroom key for access. We do not want a keypad electronic option. We’ve tried searching Lowe’s and Home Depot with no luck. Maybe we need to reach out to a lock smith? Any advice would greatly be appreciated. 🙏😊

Has anyone had any problems with Traefik with a domain .cyou? I am trying to setup Traefik on my home server, but even tho I am getting a valid Lets Encrypt certificate, I cannot access any containers using the domain name. The traefik log shows the route being created, but I cannot connect.

Hey everyone,

We just started a massive remodeling project for our two-story townhome (part of an association) under the guidance of a family friend.
Basically, we totally remodeled the kitchen (totally gutted, brand new appliances, even taking out a part of the counter), changed the carpet flooring to vinyl, and remodel of one bathroom.
We didn't force a contract due to that relationship and are now starting to regret it. Here's why:
- The workers have damaged some furniture (very unprofessional)
- The family friend is asking for large checks every few weeks, we have no real idea where this money is going to (he said it's for "labor costs")
- Home was built in 1975 and we have popcorn ceilings. We tested the home when we bought it and it was negative for asbestos, but upon checking on the progress, we see that the entire place is covered in dust (workers have been sweeping it, but we're worried that maybe other layers of the paint were not tested for when we first bought the place. I doubt the family friend tested for it, but we may have to ask him for an asbestos report, there are still things in the home that we need to get, and we don't want to expose ourselves in the worst case). We've gone inside the home twice since the popcorn ceiling removal and the dust is almost unbearable, so really worried about a potential exposure.
- Family friend gave us measurements for major appliances, we bought them, and they didn't fit, but he didn't tell us until well after the 48 hour return policy for Home Depot and Lowe's, so I had to do some major damage control for this.
I want to ask this subreddit for advice. At this point, we're very unhappy with how this is going, but we're scared of stopping everything because it's in the middle of the remodel. We were going to have him do the upper floor too, but so far he's only done the lower floor. He keeps upping the cost estimate as well (don't want to go into specifics, but it's a lot).

Does anyone know how we can do damage control? Any tips on getting out of this mess?

My wife and I will be redoing our living room flooring (mixture of crappy carpet and crappy laminate). Finally. Thank god.
Anyway, we did the Home Depot "See In Your Home" web app and picked out a few we liked. Two were Lifelock, which we've heard good things about but the winner (so far) is from a brand called A&A Surfaces?
