Hello spacers!
In this episode: certain Star Trek tropes are made fun of, you wouldn’t like Kate when she’s hungry, and crying over spilt milk water.
(On a more serious note, CW: depiction of PTSD-based panic attack).
CHAPTER 5
It was on the third day that Kate’s appetite finally returned. Up until that point, she couldn’t bring herself to even think about eating anything. When she woke up on the third day, however, she opened her eyes, yawned, stretched- and then clutched at her stomach, due to it suddenly ordering her to start gnawing at whatever was within arm’s reach to satiate what felt like a bottomless pit that had opened up in her abdomen while she slept.
She looked towards the door to her room, her expression suddenly turning to one of sheer desperation.
“Yeeg- Eigdr-“
She let out an exasperated growl of frustration. Why couldn’t he just have a nice, easy-to-pronounce name?!
“…Yiggdruhsog?” She finally stammered out.
She waited, hoping beyond hope that her utter butchering of his name would be good enough, then breathed a sigh of relief as she heard his talons clicking down the hallway. He opened the door and peered in at her.
<“Were you calling for me?”>
“Food. Now. …Please.”
He cocked his head to the side in confusion, before his glow turned to the pure white of realization, and finally the yellow of amusement as he chuckled.
<“Monosyllabic, but succinct. …Alright, what would you like?”>
“Anything even remotely edible, and honestly, that part’s optional at this point.”
He blinked a few times.
<“Uh- …Allllllright then! I’ll be right back-“>
Before he could move, Kate swung her legs out of the bed and staggered to her feet. Y’ggdrasog’s eyes widened and he reached out towards her.
<“Kate, you really shouldn’t be walking around on your own just yet, let me-“>
She wobbled for a second before taking a few shaky steps towards the door.
“Don’t care. Faster this way. Just point me in the right direction. I feel like I could eat an entire horse…”
He opened his mouth to argue again, but Kate stopped him with a dismissive gesture.
“If I look like I’m about to fall over, by all means, catch me. Otherwise, just- …just don’t touch me, ok? I want to do this myself.”
<“But-“>
Y’ggdrasog faltered when he saw the murderous glint in her eyes. If looks could kill, the entire spaceship would have been atomized.
The portion of his brain responsible for survival instincts held a brief parliamentary session, wherein it was voted that it was definitely in his best interests to shut up for the time being and let the EXTREMELY hangry human do as she pleased. So he simply closed his mouth and hesitantly nodded.
“…Which way to the kitchen?”
He silently pointed down the hall and she set off, teetering every few steps, with him awkwardly tailing along behind her.
They finally entered into a small room equipped with a table, two chairs that were clearly proportioned for lumigogs rather than humans, a small, plain looking metal box on the wall with a single red button on the side and no other visible forms of input, and what looked like a plain trash bin sitting in the corner.
Kate looked around, confused, before turning to her companion, who, still a tad jumpy, flinched at the sudden motion.
“Where’s the pantry? …Moreover, where’s the oven, stove- y’know, all the usual stuff?”
Y’ggdrasog looked at her in confusion before the realization hit him.
<“Oh- you mean traditional, heat-based nutritional sterilization? I rarely use those if I’m not planetside, I just use the foodbox.”>
“...Foodbox?”
<“Hm? …Oh! Oh, spirits, I keep forgetting- right, sorry, let me explain…”>
He walked over to the metal box and pressed the button. Immediately a series of symbols lit up on the sides and a holographic interface appeared along the front.
<“This is a standard food fabricator module and assimilator setup- colloquially known as a “foodbox” by most spacers and other such individuals whose professions necessitate remaining in space for long periods. …I’m not an engineer, and certainly not a physicist, so I don’t know exactly how fabricators work, but I do know the basics- even if they are, admittedly, grossly oversimplified.
All fabricators are directly connected to a storage bay devoted entirely to the raw materials they use located deeper in the ship. These storage bays are equipped with powderized, gaseous or liquid forms of basic elements- hydrogen, oxygen, and so on- alongside more complex structures that were pre-fabricated; simple protein structures and other such things commonly found in one’s rations. Then, it rebuilds them into the desired form you want by guiding the instantaneous creation of atomic and molecular bonds, and once the process is complete, it dispenses what you want out of the other end.
…Alternatively, you can utilize whatever materials you have on hand, and place them into the assimilator module here.”>
He gestured to the trash can before continuing.
<”For example, you could place anything with enough hydrogen and oxygen atoms into the assimilator, it would render it down to its base components, send those to the fabricator storage bay, and the fabricator could output pure, distilled water for you to drink. Then, anything left over is automatically sorted into its proper place within the fabricator bay.”>
Kate studied the box for a moment, her growing intrigue momentarily distracting her from her hunger.
“So… It’s kind of like a super high-tech 3D printer, but for food?”
<“Essentially, yes.”>
Her brow furrowed.
“Wait- wouldn’t that require something like fission and fusion to be taking place? …How do you deal with the energy requirements, or protect yourself from the radiation and heat?”>
<“Well, the energy requirement for such things is actually rather paltry in comparison to some of the other things this ship is capable of- FTL jumps, quantum tethering and the like. As for your other concerns, worry not- those issues were addressed by the designers hundreds, if not thousands of iterations ago.”>
“But how?!”
Y’ggdrasog chuckled at the incredulous expression on Kate’s face.
<“Believe it or not, I still haven’t spontaneously become an engineer or physicist between the last question and this. …All you and I need to know is that the process has been safe for thousands of years, and there are at least ten different sensors in there I can think of off the top of my head that will immediately shut it off in the event of a malfunction.”>
Kate rolled her eyes.
“Alright, fine, I’ll just channel my inner Clarke, chalk it up to “sufficiently advanced technology” and so on, and leave it at that...”
<“…What?”>
“Nothing, it’s not important… So, just as an example to make sure I’m getting this right, you just keep around a whole bunch of raw liquid hydrogen and oxygen for the “fuel” needed to provide drinking water?”
<“Sort of. While we do have plenty of oxygen and hydrogen on hand to create water if need be, it would be rather inefficient to bring along enough of both to satisfy the thirst of a crew for months on end. Thus, the vast majority of water we use is recycled from our own, uh… excretions.”>
A look of dawning, horrified realization slowly crept its way onto Kate’s face.
“…Are you seriously telling me I’ve been drinking and showering in my own urine over and over again…?”
<“Well yes, but also no. The bathroom is directly connected to a portion of the fabricator storage designated for it alone, to prevent any possibility of biological contamination. There, a separate assimilator unit breaks all waste down into atoms, and only then transfers the now-sterile components to storage, to use those atoms for whatever purposes you need in the future.”>
“That doesn’t change the fact that I’ve been drinking reconstituted pee…”
<“No, you've been drinking sterile, distilled water. You’re looking at it backwards; it’s all just a matter of various atoms and molecules that have been rearranged. …To look at it another way, you could even potentially reverse the process if you wanted to, and create a solution that’s chemically identical to your own waste products from the atoms in storage- that is, in the extremely unlikely case you ever had a legitimate reason to do so.”>
Kate grimaced in disgust.
“That’s not very reassuring. Also, that is a horrible mental image.”
<“If you’re concerned, I assure you, it’s perfectly sanitary. Beyond the previously-mentioned quarantine of the waste products from the rest of storage until they’re fully broken down, the assimilator also breaks down any bacteria and viruses that may be present for materials as well.”>
Kate cocked an eyebrow.
“So along with my own urine, I’ve also been drinking water made of reconstituted germs. Lovely...”
Y’ggdrasog chuckled, glowing a bright yellow in amusement.
<“Well, if you can come up with a more palatable alternative that continues to provide a lightweight and storage-efficient supply of nutrients and hydration whilst stuck in the vacuum of space for months on end, whilst also continuing to produce next to zero waste, do let me know.”>
Kate sighed in resignation.
“Point taken. …And honestly, at this point, I’m way too hungry to care…”
She gestured to the machine.
“Does it have human food options?”
<“Yes. Just like the medical droid, its database has been updated to provide pretty much any type of human sustenance you can think of. By all means, try it out!”>
Kate took a few shaky steps to the front of the box and stopped, staring at the alien letters that made up the interface.
“…Is there, like, a set of language options, or…?”
Y’ggdrasog cocked his head to the side, glowing baby-blue in confusion.
<“What?”>
She glanced down at the interface, her brow furrowed.
“I can’t read this…”
Y’ggdrasog’s eyes widened, and the confused baby-blue suddenly turned to a stark white of realization.

Kate stepped aside, and he walked up to the box.
<”What would you like?”>
Kate shrugged.
<”Could it make me… I dunno, some oatmeal…? Or maybe bacon and scrambled eggs, I guess? I’m always up for breakfast food.”
Y’ggdrasog nodded as he punched in a few sequences of alien symbols and positioned a small plate and bowl on a tray underneath the device before stepping back, gesturing for her to take a look.
As Kate watched, the box unfolded and expanded into a wide, complex-looking apparatus with a set of long, flexible tubes on top that trailed down towards a small trough in the center, in which rested the tray. The tubes went into motion, rapidly twitching this way and that as what looked like clouds of gas and extremely fine powders of various colors flowed out of them and settled around the tray.
A small cluster of what she recognized as nanobots similar to the one on her arm flowed from the tubes. They hovered over the various materials and started swirling around them, moving, shifting, compressing, and solidifying it all into recognizable patterns and shapes. The barely-visible cloud of nanobots, their task complete, filtered back up into the tubes. What looked like several panes of glass suddenly slid into place above the tray, shielding the pair of them from its contents.
Y’ggdrasog nudged Kate.
<“You’ll probably want to look away for this part.”>
“Why? What’s it gonna-“
Before Kate could finish the sentence, the tray was aglow with light that was far too bright to look at. Kate covered her eyes, albeit a bit too late to avoid the afterimage of it being burnt into her eyes for several seconds.
“…Ok, it makes a tiny star or something. Noted. …Yeesh…”
About 30 seconds later, the light died down. As Kate’s eyes finally adjusted, she found herself staring at a plate stacked with what looked and smelled like freshly-fried bacon and scrambled eggs, alongside a bowl full of what was undeniably oatmeal. If she hadn’t watched the process, she would have sworn they could have come from any given brunch joint on Earth.
Y’ggdrasog pressed one of the holographic buttons and the tray slid forward toward them as the screen lifted. Afterwards, he pulled out a metal fork, spoon, and knife set from a nearby drawer and presented them to Kate. While proportioned perfectly for her, they looked oddly tiny in his large, clawed hands. <“I took the liberty of fabricating these for you earlier,”> he explained. <“I hope they’re to your liking.“>
He took the tray and set it on the table next to her glass water bottle.
<“Go ahead, dig in.”>
Kate’s mouth started watering.
“You certainly don’t have to tell me twice...”
Despite her initial misgivings, it felt and tasted exactly like she thought a bowl of fresh oatmeal, scrambled eggs and crispy bacon should. She practically inhaled her first helping, and the second.
…It was on the third helping that it all went downhill.
She had just started to swallow down yet another spoonful of oatmeal when a few oats went down the wrong pipe. She started coughing and sputtering in surprise, struggling to steady her breathing as the oats responsible were coughed back into the bowl. Continuing to cough from the irritation, she reached for her bottle of water, but in her haste she clumsily bumped against it, and before either of them could react it had toppled off the table and shattered on the metal floor.
Kate jumped at the noise and looked down in horror at the broken shards of glass littering the floor. Her hand reflexively went to her broken arm, then her throat, brushing against the still-visible bruises.
Y’ggdrasog made a dismissive gesture as he leaned down to assess the damage.
<“Oh, not to worry; accidents happen. I’ll just sweep it up and dump it into the assimilator, it’ll be-“>
He trailed off as he heard the noises Kate was making. Turning back to face her, he saw that her chest was heaving, as though she had just escaped drowning, and tears began to run down her now-terrified face as she kept alternating between gripping her wounded arm and running her hand across her throat.
<“Kate? …Kate, it’s fine, it was just a bottle, I can just fabricate a new one. …Kate- Kate, are- are you listening…?”>
He began to glow blood-red in worry as she started trembling, still rapidly drawing in lungfuls of air as her eyes unfocused, staring off into the distance. He raised his hands in a placating gesture.
<“Kate, it’s ok! I don’t- I truly hold no ill will toward you for the bottle or the mess. It’s fine, alright? I- Kate- Kate! KATE, CALM DOWN!”>
Her breathing had turned to ragged, horrible-sounding wheezes.
In desperation, Y’ggdrasog jumped up and grabbed hold of her good arm with a vice-like grip, shaking her.
<“KATE, SNAP OUT OF-“>
She moved faster than his eyes could follow, and before he could react she had punched him in the face, knocking him off balance and almost causing him to fall over.
Y’ggdrasog let out a sharp high-pitched trill of surprise as he let go of her and grabbed at the table to steady himself. As he regained his balance, he traced his clawed fingers over where she had struck him, assessing the damage. It didn’t hurt too badly, but underneath the carapace his inner flesh would definitely be bruised for a few days. He sighed, rubbing the spot, before suddenly realizing that the ragged sound of Kate’s wheezing had stopped. He glanced over at her.
Her eyes were still wide with horror- but she was no longer staring at some point leagues away. Instead, she stared straight at him, her good hand covering her mouth in shock.
There were a few moments of silence before Kate broke it in a panicked voice.
“OH GOD, I’M- I’M SO SORRY! I- I don’t- I didn’t mean to- I wasn’t-“
She continued to stammer out attempts at an apology, before her voice suddenly died in her throat. Before Y’ggdrasog could react, she got up and bolted from the room, back down the hallway.
<“Kate- Wait, stop! what are you-“>
He swore under his breath and ran after her.
He found her in the spare room sitting on the bed, pressing herself against the headboard as though she was trying to sink into it, slowly rocking back and forth as she did so. She had curled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her good arm around them, resulting in a troubled, unstable fetal position. Her face was buried in her knees, her long hair hanging down to cover it… But that didn’t stop him from hearing the muffled sobs.
He slowly walked into the room and sat down at the foot of the bed. They sat there in silence that was only broken by Kate’s quiet sobs, until she sniffled and raised her head slightly to meet his gaze with bloodshot eyes, and spoke in a voice barely above a hoarse whisper.
“I’m s-so sorry… I d-didn’t mean to hurt you… …I…”
He continued simply gazing at her in silence. Kate went on, tears streaming from her eyes, her voice growing more and more desperate.
“Please, you- you h-have to believe me, I- I would never-“
<“I believe you. And I forgive you.”>
Her breath caught in her throat at this.
Y’ggdrasog steepled his clawed fingers in thought as he gazed at her, his glow shifting to somewhere between concerned crimson and pensive purple.
<”...It didn’t seem as though you were… present just now, after the bottle broke. It was like your body was sitting in place at the table, but your mind had moved to quite another location entirely. …One that caused you significant distress.”>
Kate closed her eyes and let out a long, shaky sigh.
“...I wasn’t present, not really. Choking like that, then the- …t-the bottle-”
She shuddered, reflexively gripping her broken arm.
“…It brought me back to a very, very bad moment.”
She glanced down at her wounded limb.
“...The moment when- …w-when this happened to me.”
<“…Do you want to talk about it?”>
Kate remained silent.
<“…I understand if you don’t. It’s entirely your decision. I simply desire to alleviate you of any pain I can. …But as I am helpless to assist with the pain in here-“>
He gestured to her arm before continuing.
<“I hope that I can at least alleviate some of what I feel to be the much greater source of your agony, which lies in there.”>
He pointed a clawed finger towards her forehead.
<“…Again, it is entirely your choice. If you truly believe that speaking of it will simply bring more pain, merely say as much, and you have my word that I will never speak of it again. …But if you feel that doing so may help bring you even a nano-angstrom of peace that you did not have access to before, I will consider it a triumph. And remember…”>
He slowly held out his hand, presenting it to her, palm up.
<“There is no shame to be found in accepting help freely offered.”>
There was a silence that lasted all of 10 seconds but felt like centuries as Kate looked between Y’ggdrasog’s hand and his piercing yet sympathetic gaze. Finally, Kate hesitantly lifted her good hand before slowly, gingerly placing it in his own.
“…Ok…”

2023.03.30 13:53 Calneon Tips for double handed play at harder difficulties, with limited card pool?

Hi. I'm fairly new to AHLCG and own Core + The Dunwich Legacy + The Path to Carcosa. I have a regular group that's completed TDL and is going through TPTC on standard difficulty.
Between those sessions I wanted to play some solo campaigns. I also have Return To the Dunwich Legacy, so thought I'd play through that and for added spice turn it up to hard (probably in hindsight not the best idea since Return To already bumps the difficulty a bit.
Tl;dr at bottom.
I chose Mark Harrigan and Daisy Williams and specialised them into fighting and investigating. First scenario was The House Always Wins which went very poorly. Mark only got out a Machete before the criminals turned aggressive and then had the worst luck and was engaged with more than 1 enemy most of the time. We were mainly cornered in the stage area and Daisy couldn't help because I didn't give her any fighting capabilities.
Tip #1 - Investigator decks need some versatility because things are going to go south and they need to help each other out.
We ended up running out the doom clock and taking 1 physical trauma each.
Extracurricular Activity was much better, Daisy managed to get a hit on the abomination with the alchemical concoction and Mark finished it off. Whippoorwills were a huge pain in the ass though and we barely made the required tests.
Tip #2 - Always kill whippoorwills when they appear.
Miskatonic Museum also went well, especially considering we got an Infinite Doorway on the central location. Mark narrowly avoided death from Beyond The Veil by drawing as many cards as possible to cycle the discard pile before drawing Beyond the very next Mythos phase. Mark also had very little to do in this scenario and was twiddling him thumbs most of the time. See Tip #1.
Essex County Express was a write-off. Mark got overwhelmed by enemies with the new Overseer and couldn't get help from Daisy. The forced actions on entering carriages wore away at health and sanity (Mark having 5 sanity and effectively 5 health due to Sophie really didn't help). Daisy made a good effort healing with the medical tome but had to keep spending resources, and when we got to the carriage that required 3 resources per clue it was basically game over. The horror from a passenger finished us off, each taking 1 mental trauma.
Tip #3 - Investigators with 5 in health and/or sanity leave very little margin for failure, especially with trauma.
Blood on the Altar went alright though Mark was quite overwhelmed by the amount of enemies in the encounter deck, even with his upgraded .45s. At this point I'd realised the .32 Colt just wasn't a good card for harder difficulties, despite what people say about it being good for Mark with his 5 fight. 1 extra fight can make all the difference when regularly pulling -3 and -4 from the chaos bag.
Tip #4 - .32 Colt is not good above standard difficulty.
We managed to find the hidden chamber and Daisy made light work of clue gathering with Pathfinder (to move into the chamber) and Archaic Glyphs to grab multiple clues while inside, and then making a swift retreat.
I wasn't looking forward to Undimensioned and Unseen, because it's a very willpower focused scenario and Mark and Daisy weren't specialised in it. However, it was going much better than I expected and we killed a couple of Broods without much difficulty. Mark was able to take damage with Sophie to boost his evade to exhaust the Broods, and Daisy with Encyclopedia and Higher Education could boost her willpower to get tests with 4-5 skill advantage (with the clues, of course). We were feeling pretty good, recouping and healing up a bit, when the agenda flipped and a Brood spawned on top of us making an immediate attack with a (4) agility test. Mark failed the test but was able to eat it, flipping Sophie in the process, but Daisy would be put to 1 remaining health if it connected. We threw everything at it, Daisy with committed 5 agility and Mark helped with 1, making the test 8 vs 4. Of course we drew the -5.
So it was bad, but we were still alive, and we could use the location ability to place our clues and hopefully defeat it the following turn. Then we drew Ruin and Destruction from the mythos deck. Another (3) agility test. Having used everything for the previous test, there was nothing we could do, not even the elder sign could save Daisy. Mark lived with 1 health and actually managed to deal two damage to the brood on his turn with some clutch willpower tests, but the third and final attack failed. With no way to escape he also succumbed.
This is where I'll be abandoning the campaign. Progressing with so much trauma seems pointless, I'd rather evaluate my errors and improve for next time.
I want to create better decks and try again, hence this thread.
Tl;dr - What tips do you have for playing harder difficulties with two investigators, with a small-ish card pool (Core + TDL + TPTC). Cheers!

2023.03.30 13:51 dq66x Need advice on upgrading 2012 Challenger

Hello from Dubai!

I have a 2012 Challenger Rallye (V6) in black with silver stripes. it has 130k miles on it, hasn't given me much trouble and drives like a dream.
I've just gotten a bit of a pay bump ($1.5k/month - not nearly enough) so I'm in two minds on what to do with it.
Option 1:
Sell the one I have (will max get $8k) and pay that as a down payment for a slightly used 2018+ V8 and the rest (around $18-20k) on bank financing for 3 years, paying around $500 a month.
Option 2:
Get a full mechanical check and replace any parts that need replacing (thinking around $2k) and then do a full cosmetic makeover, new paint (dark red) with back stripes, new seats, new front and rear lights (2016 onwards) and entertainment system (another $2k max) and then keep that for a couple of years.

For context, while I'm comfortable money-wise, I'd rather have more disposable income a month. The V8 does excite me for obvious reasons but the V6 has been a great experience and I have no complaints really. Have a separate V6 Durango for the wife and kids so that doesn't impact my decision.

I'm leaning towards option 2 but will need ideas on what to upgrade/replace, if it is a good idea in the first place.

I work a job where I'm staring at a computer all day. I already have blue light glasses and have everything set to geriatric mode on my computer. I've always had really good eye sight and can read everything just fine, but at the end of everyday, I can tell there's been a lot of strain on my eyes.
I'm looking to get new glasses with blue light filtering and magnification (reading glasses), and have a few picked out. I'm not sure what strength to get for the average monitor distance. Any good starting points for people with already good eye sight? Should I just go to an eye doctor?

Hello everyone! I am in the process of learning how RVTs work. I have an issue now that I created for my foliage to sample color from the landscape painting. I followed this tutorial. (exccept I added UV scaling on my textures.) The grass just seems to stop sampling correctly at a seemingly random point in the landscape. I made sure the volumes are covering the entire landscape. I also tried to re-sculpt the landscape, flatten it and see it anything changed but it did nothing. If I do a small change, it can look fine but after building lights (I use static, and stationary for directional) the grass goes back to not working. Any thoughts on what is causing this?

2023.03.30 13:23 Goklayeh Dune Spice Wars Feedback 01 : Accessibility & Ergonomy.

Hello, bought the game just after Air & Sand update, spent some time on it (vs AI), and wanted to share my experience and thoughts.
I enjoy strategy and gestion games, and am a huge science fiction and Franck Herbert fan, so I probably am somehow part of the targeted demography.
I have been testing projects and giving feedbacks for many years, and this hopefully constructive feedback is meant to help the team because I enjoy this game and want it to be awesome.
This is still a personal experience though, feel free to discuss my points or question them may anything be unclear.
I'm aware that game dev is A LOT of work, and am not challenging the work already done, nor the people behind it. Similarly I know this is a work in progress, that my feedback might be already known or straight up wrong, that many element might change or be added, and that developement resources are limited and priorities have to be set. This is not meant to denignate players currently enjoying the game either.
Before starting, I wanted to say that the game is quite interesting and shows great potential, the design is really cool and the atmosphere well captured. It's really impressive how diverse the map and its regions look, considering sand and rock were the only main materials you could work with.
You'll find below the first part of my (very long!) feedback, focused on the accessibility/ergonomy part of the player experience.
Ergonomy is crucial. Even in a good game, if many elements are unclear, if it is hard to find the needed infos, understand what's going on, navigate the interface and interact with the game, that will generate a lot of friction and frustration (even prevent some groups of people from being able to play the game at all) and then deeply impact the experience. Then that will hurt attration and retention rates, and impact purchases numbers.
A fast yet efficient way to test some of your visual accessibility is to greyscale screenshots of the game and look at the shapes and contrasts to see what is understandable or not.
 
Spice Wars does have some accessibility issues, the good news is that streamlining and normalising the interface would greatly improve the access and understanding of information, and the ergonomy of navigation.
 
Menus:
Tabs on top of the secondary windows would be great for easier and faster navigation between menus (Research, Landsraad, Espionage, CHOM, diplomacy/trading, barracks, etc).
The Spice Report & Guild Fee windows could probably be merged.
What's an interactible button/area (hover on popup or effect on click) isn't always the clearest. The Spice/Solari slider, or the trading/diplomacy icons, or the hover popup for villages upkeep for example.
Beware of popups. They are great to store additional details about something, but should be used sparingly and never contain the main information. Also the more there are, the more cumbersome using the interface gets. Every information or interaction hidden behind one or more layers of clicking or hovering adds needless complexity and mental workload (the espionage window being a primary offender). If you have enough space to display the most important info in the main windows, show it there, and keep details & lore in the popup.
The pause/play UI could be more highlighted. A II and > icons replacing each other would make the different states clearer than the current slight color & contrast changes.
A "Retry" option would be nice: Starting again with the same current settings (faction, difficulty, etc).
What are training slots and is their number clearly/explicitly shown ingame? If not it should. Example: in the main window "Training slots = 2" and the popup on hover "Training slots is the maximum number of unit you can train at the same time".
In the resource popups, displaying all positives and all negatives totals would be useful. +5 gold could mean +10 -5, or +105 - 100, and having these totals would be relevant. Image example here.
There are many cases where the informations given are not relevant, missing, or misleading/confusing:
 
Map & Villages:
The big icon over an attacked village is more confusing and in the way than helpful. When you have your troop icons, enemy/militia icons, the village name bar, and then the big "under attack" icon plus the pillage/capture/liberate buttons, that is way too much to understand and use easily and it prevents you from selecting or targeting units regularly.
Bigger villages & buildings models would be lovely, I want to be able to look at them (& target them) better.
Buildings being targettable during town assault is confusing. Making clearer that militia/army being gone will stop the turrets and allow village capture would help.
There is a need of visual distinction of villages (and buildings) traits types. Currently local, local + neighbours, all territories, and global effects are all displayed similarly, and that's quite hard to follow.
A window to look at a list of all fremen camps you know of at once could be interesting, as being all over the map it can be quite bothersome to check them all. Sma for all you villages and their traits.
Sietches trading states could be displayed more contrasted/clearer than the current slightly whiter line around the icon.
In the zoom out main view, more contrast between the undiscovered regions and the map limits would be appreciated.
The fog of war system is a bit puzzling at times. Sometimes I keep vision and see everythin on faraway places for a long time, sometimes I see the region but units are hidden, othertimes parts or totality of a region I already explored is greyed out, and I have no idea how this all works.
Militia portaits are used for buying them but not shown in the village interface unlike soldiers? it would be cool to see the nice portraits.
Major buildings & Unique Regions have the same icon.
Factions units icons being only identified by a color is far from optimal in terms of accessibility, lisibility & ergonomy. Green and blue harvesters are really similar, neutral grey and Corrino light grey are quite close, Fremen yellow and Fremen sietches orange, harvesters & milicia being half grey, and then the renegates... It's not simple for the average player to keep track of all this, it is really hard for neurodivergent people or people with bad eyesight, and just impossible for colorblind people. All faction having a different icon shape - and even better texture - would help a lot. Image mockup here (yeah I know I'm not an artist, please have mercy).
Showing the relevant resource icon in the building button that it is associated with it would be helpful. With different icons when the ressource merely gives a boost or is required (minerals/rare elements).
You can't add new building slot in village during combat but you can start building construction. That feels strange.
It might be cool if the buildings choice popup could be always shown in the villages UI (same display system than the Fremen buildings you can craft in allied sietches). Building stuff is all we do in villages, doing this will drastically reduce the number of clicks needed.
Would be useful to have the base production displayed regrouped somewhere, over the main base for example?
 
Notifications:
I still don't know why some alerts are greens and others grey, and why some can be dismissed and not others.
Alerts you can dismiss and those you can't should have a different shape, color, and place.
The "building complete" alert could tell and show the building in question (/!\ Windrap finished !).
Notification for iddle Ornis (like harverters) would be cool.
Quests starting should trigger an alert.
A notification when a temporary unit joins you would be useful as well, I always discover them some time after their arrival.
Left click on an alert should probably center the camera on it AND dismiss the notification.
 
Research:
Putting the names of the four tech trees (expansion, economic, military, statecraft) in the developments window would be appreciated. Like the corresponding name on top of each tree (and a specific icon for each as well). They are referenced in missions/events rewards and in the Landsraad but not present in the actual research window.
In main screen, current research type is only identified by a colored loading bar. Not easy for newcomers and useless for colorblind people.
Each tree/research type having its own exclusive icon would make that easier and clearer. Bad mockup example here, other symbols would do fine (sword, house, money, etc). These icons should be used in the Landsraad as well when a resolution concerns one of these research trees. And everywhere a research is mentionned really.
In the events interface, the color of the research icon reward is really hard to distinguish even with good eyes. Again using a specific icon per tree would help a lot.
There are little difference between an ongoing research and one that has been advanced by missions/events. More contrast than the lines around the circle icon would be great.
Showing the actual ingame icon of the building or unit unlocked in the research tree node would be helpful.
The same icon is used to show a faction specific research AND also to tell that this is a capital building research. They should be different to avoid confusion.
 
Espionage:
The espionage window is a bit of a popup nightmare. The same few infos are duplicated in all agents & slots popups. Instead you could have one single line in the window saying "All assigned agents will generate +1 intel" and in written directly after Arrakis "+1 Authority", for the guild "+2 Manpower", etc.
Several things depend of your total level of infiltration, thus it should be displayed somewhere in the espionage window.
"Operations" being called "missions" as well and how both interact is a bit confusing to me.
 
Landsraad:
The Landstraad and voting system takes a good while to get used too, and I'm still unsure about lots of stuff. What are the rules under proposals choices and IA voting? What are the different phases of the voting process? What are the different type of "laws"? Sometimes I would fit the required conditions but it was never proposed to the vote.
Display the cost of changing the scale of a resolution for Corrino (or other faction's actions): The relevant info is that it costs influence, and how much, and that should be visible in the main Landsraad window and not hidden in a popup.
Landstraad standing of all factions should be displayed in the Landsraad window, like the votes & influence.
The Landsraad process time line should be displayed and all its steps explained in the Landsraad window, not just in the main game screen icon where it's unreadable.

Hello hobbyists. First of all thank you for all of the comments on my xmen they're all very much appreciated. There was a request for close up photos and here they are. I do prefer to show group photos because I feel like that's more representative of my work. Regardless of the perceived quality I paint gaming models and as such my approach is optimized for painting groups of models to a good quality in a reasonable amount of time. Ideally I want my models to look good from a distance even in less than ideal lighting which means lots of contrast and lots of light and sometimes I have to force the issue so to speak. Not to say they look bad up close but rather there are reasons why they look the way they do.

2023.03.30 13:14 Interesting_Money_64 Opinions on MJ Bale for casual blazers/sport coats? Any other recommendations?

I am looking for casual blazers/sport coats to complete that probably controversial 't-shirt with suit jacket' look. I know it's not for everyone but I like it. And you can always mix and match. I admittedly know nothing about suit jackets etc as I never had to wear one.
I have gone to Uniqlo to check out their 'blazers' and they seem decent but the range of colours is pretty boring conventional dark colours. I want something a bit more colourful like dark green or light navy blue
One of my colleagues recommended MJ Bale and their website lists quite an extensive list of different styles but the price is quite steep - correct me if I'm wrong but jackets start at $300 (at least the one I am eyeing)
Just wondering if MJ Bale is worth that kind of price in quality. I wouldn't mind paying a little more if the quality matches.
Would appreciate any other recommendations.
