I'm a policy civil servant, and have been in this role for about 2.5 years. In 2021, I was diagnosed with a chronic, very debilitating health condition (which also qualifies as a disability) which led me to taking 7 months off work. I returned next year, after an Occupational Health assessment (and advice from my own doctor) who recommended my employer make reasonable adjustments and allow me to work from home full-time, and slightly later start time (10am instead of 9).
My line manageseniors were supportive for the first 6 months or so, but I'm increasingly finding I'm having to constantly justify why I'm not in the office (the rest of the team/department does 2 days in the office). Going into the office with my condition *physically* isn't possible - it might sound odd but the nature of the condition is such that it would be extremely physically difficult, and cause a flare-up in symptoms (the travel and commute, getting dressed in the morning and leaving immediately all within a set timeframe, the walking around in the office, the general environment not being conducive to managing symptoms). It honestly does feel like asking a wheelchair user to meet you at the top of the stairs (if there's no lift, or ramp). But my employer just doesn't seem to appreciate this. Honestly, it seems like they think I'm just choosing to never come in, as if it now suits me, which isn't true at all, because it sucks - I'm isolated from the rest of the team, don't have access to the same networking opportunities, and generally it's quite lonely. I as a very sociable and high-performing team member before all this. I've gotten to a place where I can manage my symptoms and condition if I'm fairly immobile and can be in my own environment to manage symptoms if and when they arise, but leaving the house to travel into work just isn't feasible at the moment. I honestly cannot overstate the level of disability my condition causes, and it's incredibly isolating.
Some of the comments I've had is:
"Are you sure you're not able to come in?" (frequently asked)
"Well, in the office it's easier to work together so maybe that's why it's not been as easy for you" (in response to a question about working with the team more effectively)
"The virtual option for X event is only for exceptions - you should really try to come in" (even though I've not been in the office for ages)
...and generally just a constant questioning of my circumstances and doubt as to what I'm going through. It's been quite disappointing as in the Department there's always been an emphasis on disability inclusion and support, and being active about being inclusive, but it's not been my experience at all. I'm able to do my job pretty effectively from home, but I've started to just feel very disengaged/saddened, stressed by this apparent lack of understanding, and I'm not sure what to do. Not looking for sympathy as such, maybe just advice? Maybe I could speak to HR? I really don't want to cause any further issues with my team, but at the same time, given the OH recommendations and my own doctor's note on my file, I don't feel like I should need to keep explaining myself. I have a disability and it really does feel like wilful ignorance at this point.

The way they talk and express themselfs has always been the same. I always hear coments like: "ohh that persons has a great personality but she's black(morena, they call black people morenos), or, that guy is really fun to hang out with, even though he's fat, that woman there is so beautiful, until you see her teeths, the places I like to hand out are always filled with morenos", coments like that. Well everytime my husband grandparents/aunts/uncle's come visit us from the states, they are always talking like that everytime. Even with me. My husband and his family skin color is very pale, I'm more of a darker shade, not black entirely (I'm just trying to explain my shade of skin), but a very light brown what they call trigeña (all of my friends/family call me Pocahontas because of my shade, body and black long waist-length hair), our son is lighter but has a bit more color not as pale as my husband. His family are always talking to me, mentioning my skin color, and saying that everyone would know at first sight that my son is my husband's but would never figure out it was mine because of "his lighter tone". I've heard some comments saying that they don't like much that darker people culture because they are loud, and messy, every single time when they introduce me to someone else it's always like: this (trigeña) here is my daughter in law, and that is my grandson, even though his skin color is lighter. In the past I just I thought nothing of it, but recently I just notice this behavior and the way they talk about me and others, my son is usually all the time with me, he had a school work where he had to draw and paint his family, and he used a darker shade for me and him, he shows the drawing to them, and they told him that that wasn't his skin color, that he was supposed to be the same as his father, and my son just kept telling them that he wasn't, that he had more color than him, my son came crying to me, because they yelled at him because he was wrong, my husband was not present at that moment, but when he came home I explained the situation, he was ashamed and apologized to us in their behalf, later he talk to them about that behavior that he didn't want his son to have/learn. They haven't said anything to us, is like nothing ever happened, everyone is just like normal. I've been more quiet with them than usual(I'm very shy, introvert, and I'm very mad), only talking when I'm addressed, and now they are calling me anti-social because of it. I would really like to kick them all out of my house, but I don't say or do anything out of the respect. Am I overreacting about this?? |

We have a neighbor who potentially has a mental illness. One night this individual was screaming at the top of her lungs marching up and down the street calling everyone every curse word you could think of. A few weeks later, the individual Withdrew her kid from school. Only after raising a scene at the school calling for the police to show up. Over the past few months, this individual can be heard screaming and shouting in her residence (not sure if at her kid, or maybe voices in her head). The police were just recently called to her home because a family walking their dog allowed the dog to poop on her yard, and while cleaning it up she walked out and called them every profanity you can think of (bitch, where, fag, etc). Police have been called several times and I fear her kid is picking up this behavior and is thinking it's normal. Husband is unknown at this point.

So after all the backlash Saba recieved, she's playing it safe. She's including small clips of how she contributes in the household like keep rasmalai in the fridge , buying veggies. There's a sudden sense of responsibility she is trying to portray. She posted snippets of interacting with her MIL. I couldn't understand the reason of the random dawat kept at home? Was it for some achivement, anniversary or birthday. She kept the clips with Beti khala short.Sge is trying to get into the gharelu Bahu image. I just want the couple to stay at peace, enjoy their years of togetherness. Instead of doing stupid things in the name of content,I'm happy she's trying to give time to her family.

My BF and I just moved to a new place, and we’re not sure where to put our desks. They’re both desktop with dual monitors so they take up a lot of space, and we’re not sure we should have them in the same space, as:
- We’re often on Discord together with friends, and we’re worried our mics would pick up each other’s voice.
- And I’m working from home, so my desk is also my work space.
Any advice?

It is our church's policy that I take a 2-week vacation every year. Something I am very glad for, especially this year since I'm just really tired and really needing the time off. My wife reserved a little house on a lake about 5 months ago for our family. We only have it for 4 days. Its a little over 4 hours drive away from home.
About 5 minutes after we arrived, I got a call that one of the older ladies in the church has become gravely ill, so much so that the family has been called in. Literally 3 days ago, she was completely fine, so it is a big shock for the family.
What would you all do in this situation? I kind of feel guilty about not going to the hospital with the family, but at the same time, I am 4 hours away. I would've had to repack the van, load the kids and wife back up to drive 4 hours straight back. The funeral is about 2 days worth of work. 1 day for prep i.e. meeting the family, gathering all the info and pictures and planning the service from beginning to end and coordinating the funeral home workers so they know what to do during the service. Then of course the day of the funeral I show up an hour prior with the family, conduct the funeral and usually stay afterwards for about an hour, so possibly 3-4 hours the day of the funeral.
Anyways, what would you all do in this situation? Thankfully we have never had something like this happen during our vacation time. There is no postponing our vacation since the week after we come back we have church camp and the week after church camp my wife starts her new job as an RN at our local hospital. I'm a little torn, just looking for advice.

Background: I am POC who migrated to Europe through a scholarship to grad school (studying linguistics if relevant). Halfway through my MA program I got a full-time corporate job at a FAANG. After working as a research assistant back home and here as well, this was my first industry job out of academia. I was so excited because that was my ideal scenario and my job involves working on conversational AI systems which I find super interesting. But FAANG culture is cut-throat and it’s killing me.
I’ve managed to keep up with grad school assignments and now I only have the thesis left. I’ve been working on it since February, the official deadline is in October but my plan was to finish it in July. I’ve written over half the lit review but still need to read some more papers, I’m done with analysis for 85% of my data.
I feel so close but so far away. I’ve been stuck in survival mode for so long because my staying here depends on my visa situation and so I need to constantly “prove” that I deserve to be here.
Working full time and writing a thesis is draining the life out of me and I don’t know how people do it. This is my second round of burnout in two years because of my corporate job. I’m happy that I have the experience but I’m just so done with constantly switching between my work laptop and my own laptop. My mental health and all my relationships are suffering. I’m on edge all the time and I just feel plain stupid. Any attempt to work on my thesis for the past 2 weeks has made me feel paralyzed. I theoretically know that I can do this, but the internal pressure of wanting to finish so I can just go back to my life and hopefully quit my job is too much. Finishing this thesis will make me eligible for applying for permanent residence in the country so that I’m not constantly worried about my visa being tied to a job, but I’m just exhausted.
Current situation: My therapist has given me 2 weeks off work -which can be extended to a month or 2-. My first thought was that this is a great opportunity for me to focus solely on my thesis before going back to work, but my partner and friends say that they think I should take at least half this time to rest and do nothing. What do you guys think?
I guess I’m just looking for any advice on how to navigate this or any words of encouragement.

- Farms (normal ones) vs Plantations. Plantations are more expensive, and employ more people, but are they also more efficient than farms? Upkeep is definitely higher...
- Cement factory - is it bugged? It only rarely exports anything....
- How does nuclear plant work? Do I have to import Uranium every month? I am literally too scared to build it :)
- What is the best way to house Tropicans? I always (since T1 :) ) go for apartment buildings. 2.5K (with diplo edict), you can spam them like there is no tomorrow. If I just reduce rent to 2 everyone will move in. Sprinkle in Same sex marriage edict (people of the same sex live together), and you can house a bunch of people in not too many buildings. If I have space where I can't fit anything else I put standard house there. Do you guys think this is efficient?

I have just started my own business here in the UK after moving back home from Belgium 6 months ago... I have some savings in € in Belgium and I get paid often by clients in €. I'm just wondering what the best way of transferring that money over here is without getting hit by fees. I was advised to set up a € account with my UK bank as i was told that i would not get exchange fees doing it this way... however, when i do a transfer i see that the actual amount i get in £ is not a direct translation from € in line with the current exchange rate. Meaning my bank is charging me extra for something. I'm not sure what the % is but if i change say €800 into £ i loose about £20... not to bad i guess... but it all adds up and will sting harder when i move my savings. Is there a way around this or is this just an inevitability of currency exchange?

In 99% of cases, this isn't relevant. I've seen many houses with issues that are minor and people would be able to deal with. So I'm not saying we should be able to report every house for paint damage or a leaky pipe. However, it's the second time I view a house where the agent has completely misrepresented the house.
The first one, we got all the way to the survey before we found out a major safety/structural issue that the agent already was aware of and as they had suggested that their own surveyor would be better, I question how honest they would be with us. Of course, I don't trust their team to have my best interest at heart. Our surveyor was someone we knew and could trust and went the extra mile for us.
The second one, we went for a viewing and turned up to a house with tenants in (who hadn't been told about the viewing) and when the agent finally arrived (20 mins late), the tenants went off at him (understandably) for no notice and also made it clear that they had told the agents and landlord they would not vacate the property for at least a year and then when they find a new place and threatened to call the police on everyone. The tenants seemed a bit unstable, but absolutely right about the 24 hr notice. But as we were looking to buy a home to live in... these statements are pretty
In neither cases, were we told (even after asking for potential issues) about these problems and we're left to find out alone. Thankfully, we were lucky in both to have been in the right place at the right time and having had a great surveyor who backed us up with seriously in-depth information.
I just feel like certain properties need to have warning labels attached for other buyers to be aware of major issues that could bankrupt them.
Both of the issues could have been overlooked had the tenants not been in or our surveyor not been on it. And I know the first house was sold for a higher price than the surrounding houses which are in better structural and aesthetic condition but is going to cost the new owner a considerable amount to make it safe.
Is there a way to warn people about specific properties, so that they could search them up and see that there is a risk they are taking?
TLDR: If there is a major issue at a property for sale, is there somewhere we can report it for other buyers to find out without having to accept the agent's word for it?

My (23M) girlfriend (35F) got into reading memoirs recently because she started a book club. She picks typically sad memoirs, which I never had any issues with, and I actually like when she discusses the books with me.
The issue is that she has been reading a memoir recently that has been upsetting her considerably. She has a big heart, and ends up feeling very sad for the life of the author. Over the past days, she has been more snappy, sad, and negative. She was mainly thinking about the book and ignored 70% of what I was trying to talk to her about. This is very unlike how she is usually sunny and responsive to me. I was okay with that because I presume it is a temporary thing, I wasn’t trying to tell her anything important anyway, she really likes the book, and she will finish the book. I just comfort her more in response.
But today, she told me that she had to leave work early to lie at home in bed, because she was so upset by the book. I told her if reading it is really necessary when it upsets her this much. She told me that it is necessary for her to read it so that she can understand the pain of the author, and understand kind of life that the author led as a marginalized minority, and how lucky she is in comparison.
WIBTA if I told her to stop reading the book? And I don’t know how to reply to her line of reasoning, I don’t want her to think that I am arguing “screw understanding the pain of other people, I want you to go back to being happy because you are my girlfriend”.
