2023.06.11 00:50 VividInvestigator644 Advice for my family's itinerary next week?
First - thanks for being such a friendly and helpful NP subreddit, I've learned a lot from reading up here! My family (two adults, kids are 7 & 5) are headed up to Olympic NP for the first time next week! We're all very experienced western US campers (mostly Sierras & north coast of California), and we're excited to explore the PNW for the first time! Looking for advice on shorter hikes for the kids or other kid-friendly activities, more challenging day hikes that one parent might take solo while the rest of the family hangs out, and off-the-beaten-track ideas/stops along our route. Also always interested in hearing about good food! We're coming in our built-out sprinter van, so pretty well set-up for camping in any weather and making meals on the go. We've got reservations for all of the campsites listed below, although if there's something amazing we're missing, we could switch to dispersed camping one or two nights. Itinerary:
- Saturday 6/10 (today) - Monday 6/12: driving up from the Bay Area, with stops to see friends, getting in late afternoon at Coho Campground on Wynoochee Lake in southern Olympic NF
- Tuesday 6/13: Travel from Wynoochee Lake to camp at Kalaloch Campground, stopping at Quinault in the morning/early afternoon and enjoying the beach at Kalaloch in the late afternoon/sunset.
- Wednesday 6/14: Travel from Kalaloch to camp at Hoh Rainforest Campground, long stop at Kalaloch Beach or Ruby Beach along the way to get to Hoh after noon to (hopefully!) avoid a long line at the entrance. Late afternoon hike in Hoh.
- Thursday 6/15: Morning in Hoh. Travel from Hoh to camp at Sol Duc Campground. Maybe detour to Rialto Beach along the way & hike to Hole-In-The-Wall (low tide @ 5 pm)? Evening at the hot springs, if available.
- Friday 6/16: Explore around Sol Duc in the morning (this could be a good day for a parent to solo hike, I think). Travel from Sol Duc to camp at Fairholme Campground on west side of Lake Cresecent. Maybe late afternoon at Salt Creek Rec Area's tidepools (high tide at noon, low tide at 7:45 pm)?
- Saturday 6/17: Staying at Fairholme again Saturday night. During the day, rent bikes for the adults in Port Angeles (we're bringing the kids' bikes) and bike as a family along north side of Lake Cresecent. Stop at Marymere Falls along the way to/from Port Angeles. Other must-sees?
- Sunday 6/18: Maybe try to hike Mount Storm King as a family in the morning if the kids seem up for it (depending on how hiking has gone over the past week). Or maybe tidepools at Salt Creek Rec Area (low tide at 8:30 am). Make our way east to Bainbridge Island (any recommended stops?) to take the ferry to Seattle by late afternoon (we'll be in Seattle for a few days before making our way back down to the Bay Area by way of Crater Lake).
Hopefully that's not too ambitious! Should we try to squeeze in Ozette or Neah Bay/Cape Flattery? Any other must-see along the way (or places that might be less busy but still great?). I know we're missing Hurricane Ridge, since it's closed, and also the whole east side of the park... will have to make another trip another time! Thank you for all of your suggestions!

2023.06.10 14:24 tensaibaka Scoreboard - Jun 10
2023.06.10 08:03 SnooMacaroons9281 ISO advice; thinking of walking away (long)
Three weeks ago, I talked with Dad and told him that my husband and I were available to go to the property that was our family home and spend a week "helping clear things out." "Helping clear things out" is code for exactly what you might think: identifying donations and taking them where they need to go, getting trash to a dumpster, identifying the things they want to move to the house they now live in and get them ready to move, and getting ready for an auction.
We had planned to take our RV and stay for a full week because we can't stay in the 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house... the guest/caretaker has taken it over. We can't take our RV as planned, because the guest/caretaker has brought in too much junk for us to safely maneuver our RV (which is necessary in order to park).
I talked with Dad about renting a dumpster (20 or 30 yard roll off), because our time is more valuable than to load & make trips to the local dumpsters. He didn't follow through with getting quotes and setting that up.
He didn't talk with the guest/caretaker about needing to move vehicles out of the way so that we could bring our RV and start clearing things out. Right now, I don't even know where we would put the roll off.
I've talked with my husband about the situation, and am very seriously considering taking whatever Dad agrees that I can have and then... just not being available unless it works for my husband and/or me.
It's blatantly obvious that my parents' situation requires intervention. It's been obvious for quite some time. When I filed for guardianship and conservatorship of both in December 2019, the guardian ad litem (GAL) had concerns about both Mom and Dad's ability to manage their own interests.
I don't know when exactly, but at some time within the past 18 months one of Mom's doctors told Dad that if Dad didn't get help for Mom, he (the doctor) would report Dad to APS for neglect. Dad told me this himself. He took it seriously enough that they now have in home help for Mom. I don't know if Dad can't, or if he won't, tell me when the in-home help comes.
The neighbors agree that Dad doesn't understand how bad the situation is. At least they are now aware that I've tried to do something about it and my hands are tied.
My sister is the power of attorney. Over the course of the past 8 years, she has repeatedly demonstrated that she will use to her advantage information I obtain via professional courtesy and share with her because they're our parents, and then cut me out of communications. She has done this repeatedly, to the point that I have not been informed about numerous medical crises, inpatient procedures, hospitalizations, or transfers to rehabilitation centers. She insists that it's what Mom and Dad want. According to what Mom and Dad tell me, and what they tell their siblings, it isn't. Yet Mom and Dad won't do anything to change it, so as far as I'm concerned it is EXACTLY what they want. (My kids and husband agree that it's payback for me calling CPS and turning Dad in for SA on me when I was 12-15.)
I don't want to throw more money at the problem. It took me a year to pay off the attorney last time, and the money I spent on attorney and GAL fees then is money I should have spent obtaining professional credentials which would enable me to double my annual income. It's taken until now to again be in position to afford the fees for that program.
Helping them would be a time sink and an energy drain, and I have other things to do with both my time and my energy. About a year ago, even though I plan on being around another 30 years or so, I started decluttering and doing my own "death cleaning" because I don't want my stuff to control me any more and I don't want to do this to my kids. I don't want, and don't think it would be healthy, to put the needs of my own household on the back burner to be available to my parents when honestly, they were never available to me.
I've made a list of those professional services that are needed in addition to the in-home healthcare they already receive, so that they can live comfortably in the home they purchased for their retirement and the other properties sold (at their current home: lawn care services, housekeeping services, handyman services, medical transport, adult day care; at our family home: clutter removal, roll off rental, professional organizer, moving company, scrap metal hauler, estate sale services, auctioneer services). I am empowered to organize none of it, so I may as well not become further involved.
Were I to bear this in mind and become further involved anyway, it wouldn't improve the relationship with my sister. It would not improve my relationship with Dad. It would not restore the relationship with the son from whom I have been estranged for 18 years as a result of family dynamics involving Dad and my sister. It will not change the fact that Dad has set me up to take a fucking when it comes time to settle my parents' estate. My sister and I are supposed to be 50-50 heirs, and I 100% doubt that's how it'll work out by the time she's done being power of attorney and executor.
Dad is the barrier to moving forward with anything. He will not, and cannot be made to, either "shit or get off the pot." In theory, Dad wants to move forward and wants help doing so. In theory, Dad wants my help.
In practice, my time, education, professional expertise and professional connections mean nothing to him. He disregards any suggestion or recommendation I make. He ignores my considered opinion. He will not make plans or follow through on commitments. Add to that, he talks shit about my sons in front of me and he talks shit about me to our relatives behind my back. He lies, and tries to claim things that never happened despite the recollections of others involved and hard evidence to the contrary.
He will not ask for help in advance; he deliberately waits until the last minute, so that everything must be dropped or reworked in order to help him.
It is not possible to have a discussion with my sister and then tell our parents that we agreed ___. I've tried on numerous occasions. She will not agree to having me take lead on things involving Mom and her staying lead on things involving Dad, and meeting regularly to ensure we're both fully informed regarding each of our parents. Supposedly their attorney advised against this; per the elder law attorney I retained when I filed the petition for guardianship and conservatorship (who was recommended by the county board of guardians), it's the recommended arrangement.
She will not step back and let me hire a case manager (to deal with health and household) and a fiduciary (to deal with finances and estate planning/senior law). She will not step up, either.
I am as sure as I'm sitting here that Dad has ASD level 2. (While I am not a diagnostician or clinician, the bulk of my professional experience is in community based social services, special education instructional and behavioral support, and supported employment services for adults who have disabilities.)
I am aware that it's possible to have ASD and a personality disorder, and I believe with certainty that this is the case with my dad. I know he has been to counseling several times and is regarded to be resistant to treatment. (My dad has done some things that resulted in court ordered counseling. It was a waste of time. At least once after the court ordered counseling, my parents attempted marriage counseling; after some months, it was discontinued with neither of them feeling any resolution/improvement. About 25 years ago someone had the brilliant idea that my parents, sister, and I should attempt family counseling. I was receiving mental health services at the time and my provider told me to discontinue the sessions because they were harmful to me. Also at that time, my children were receiving children's' mental health services; their providers shared that they felt my parents deliberately interfered with the individual and family progress my children and I were making.)
I've talked with my husband and we agree that my parents' situation is not worth me winding up back in therapy or on medication.
I am very seriously considering just going through Mom's stuff with her, asking her if I can have __, and doing absolutely nothing to help with anything of Dad's.
If this were your situation, what would you do?
edit: because words hard

2023.06.10 04:58 6371PartyPlayers Almighty Spanish Vice Lords Gang History
#Story 1 - Started in the year 1980 in S. Deering on 104th & Hoxie. Conservative Vice Lords had sets in Trumbull housing projects in that neighborhood. The Svls were at war the GDS and King Cobras. The Svls hung out with CVLs, but the CVLs only wanted African Americans in their gang. Ranked CVLs one day heard, and they opened a Latino Chapter on 104th and Hoxie, and they were known as Spanish Vice Lords. There were a few Svls, but they've made their name being a hardcore gang. Svls were hardcore foes to the GDS and King Cobras from the Trumbull housing projects. In the 80s a gang called the "Wonders" were begotten into existence. They came about and were begotten , after a Simon City Royals set faded out of the neighborhood. The Wonders begotten deeper, and the Latin Kings beget a war with them. The Wonders faded and hung out with Svls. In 1991, the Wonders were Svls, and were given a Chapter on 108th and Mackinaw. 108th and Mackinaw was the spawn of Wolfe Park Svls. Svls were still warring w/ GDS, King Cobras, and were hawking and peddling Loud weed, LSD, or cocaine in Wolfe Park. Svls refused to hawk/ peddle crack cocaine for cash, because they didn't want fiends doing crimes in the neighborhood. In the summer of 1994, the 108th Svls started warring w/ Latin Kings & Latin Dragons in the neighborhood.
There were a lot of shootings w/ the Svls , and the Svls made a name for shootingsStory #2 Spanish Vice Lords : The Latin Chapter of Vice Lords. Svls foes were Slag valley Boyz, GDS, and King Cobras. In 1966, black & Puerto Ricans kicked off an alliance. Svls were said to have spawned in East Garfield Park or Humboldt Park. In 1995, the Svls from Wolfe Park spawned a session for Lady Spanish Vice Lords. The women were brought into the gang the same way as the men. The women fixed their lives and moved on.#2010s- 2020s Through the late 2010s going into the 2020s, Saints of Back of the years wanted more sets. Saints always wanted both sides of 47th and Ashland. La Raza and Latin Souls (BGD Allies) were on 47th Racine- Justine , and Souls took over Paulina Saints from Marshfield to Hermitage 47th/ 50th. In the 40s to mid 50s , there was an Alcohol Mafia for early five points star gangs on 50th and Marshfield. The 1950s Spartans of 49th/ Hermitage , and the 51st street bunch in the 1950s rumbled during the day over the set. Civil rights and race riots led them to vacate their set.The 50th Alcohol Mafia moved to 50th and Artesian/Rockwell . There used to be a tower mill used in the 30s- 40s, but now it is used to build low income, public, and affordable housing.
Back of the yards used to have bloody rumbles were skulls were beaten with bats and chains. The Saints in 1959 started making sets in the neighborhood. After the Saints, there was the Muscadoodlers in 1964 at 49th and Loomis, the Demons at 49th and Racine (1965- 1969). Even back then money talked the loudest , and was heard by those who could be bought in the "justice" system. The Latin Souls moved from 55th and Halsted to the back of the yards in the 1980s. The Latin Souls brought extra special police, and even had shoot-outs w/ the police. Saints and Party Players had enough of the Latin Souls. The Latin Souls had aids in early 80s, and bought down Latinos, blacks, Africans, poor people, women, and police. Spanish Vice Lords took over Latin Souls block.
The Spanish Vice Lords went to the Vice Lords from 56th and Seeley about Latin Souls and BPSN. The Latin Souls were still on 50th/Paulina claiming Latin Stones from Moetown (not Almighty Latin Stones of 82nd/ Kingston/Eckersall Stadium). Their set is from 47th/50th- Ashland/Hermitage and from 50th/54th- Ashland/Hermitage. The Spanish Vice Lords opened in EdgewateUptown on Bryn MawFoster- Broadway/Winthrop. They have opened in little Village on 27th/30th- Troy/Kedzie. The Spanish Vice Lords also share Triple Bz on 79th and Escabnaba with Vice Lords. The Spanish Vice Lords are also in Fresno, California.

2023.06.09 18:44 TheBatTruck Are RVers interested in camping on someone's private property?
I have zero experience RVing/camping. I live in Indiana, and have own a lot next to the one my house is on that has nothing on it except a level gravel(#12 crushed limestone) pad, with an EXCELLENT view(I will add a picture in the comments). I have wondered about turning it into a RV/Camping spot. Assuming everything logistically works out, is this something RVers would like? Or is is being in the campground environment preferred?
It is roughly 100' from my primary residence, currently no fence in-between, but if I do this, I plan to install privacy fencing and landscaping as a buffer between my house and the camping spot. I have an exterior 30AMP hook up on my house, and have seen 100', 30AMP, extensions online for sale. And can run water to the site. No sewage. The gravel pad it self would be a pull-in style spot, very easy access, though backing out would be the biggest struggle.
Amenities I can offer are kayaks, state park pass(very popular state park 5mins away), grill, hot tub(inflatable), propane(with fee).
Is this a good idea? Terrible idea? I am open to any feedback anyone would be willing to give. Thank you.

Bright Colors, Strange Entities, and Baffling Vanishings
August 7, 2019 There are numerous cases throughout history of people just seeming to step off the face of the earth to vanish into thin air. We are usually left with only scattered clues, grasping at theories as to what has happened to these unfortunate souls, but in some cases it appears that there is a correlation of sorts. Throughout a great number of these accounts of people who have seemingly blinked out of existence there is the simple but nagging clue that they were wearing brightly colored clothing. It seems to be at first a meaningless quirk, but the number of reports of the mysteriously vanished and bright articles of clothing has increasingly become something that can’t be easily ignored, although the answers as to why might be forever elusive.
A very strange case popped up on Whitley Streiber’s site, Unknown Country, concerning a witness calling himself Alan Lamers and his very unusual, otherworldy story. Lamers claims that he was working on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, which is where it first came to his attention that a great many people were said to have gone into the jungles of the area to vanish without a trace. He was first told about this as he visited a small speck of a village in the district of Sandu Batu, in South Sulawesi, where he was warned to only wear clothing that was white or black in color, with no bright colors whatsoever. In particular he was warned not to wear anything that was yellow, and that black was the best one to go with. Odd indeed, but it would get odder still.
When Lamers pressed as to why he should not wear bright colors or anything with yellow on it, the villagers told him that people who did so had a bad habit of disappearing off the face of the earth. Weirder still, sometimes the people would reappear dazed and confused, not remembering anything of their strange incident and missing the articles of clothing with the offending colors. As to why, the villagers had no explanation. After hearing of this, Lamers and his companions warily wore all black when they trekked out into the jungle to investigate some alleged illegal logging in the area, but one of the men apparently broke the rules, and he explains:
One of my friends, who is a Bugis-Makassar, didn’t listen or understand the warning and wore yellow socks. We did our tour and returned. He was strangely quiet. That night he became extremely ill. I had never seen a person projectile vomit that hard. He had an extreme fever also. We nursed him and about a day later he returned to his healthy self. Then he told us what happened. He said something had bitten him on his right legs calf and then his thigh. He showed us the marks. They were huge scratches. He said he could not see what was attacking him. He said he did not want to tell us what happened because he was embarrassed. The villagers stood around us with these knowing looks while we looked at the marks. they said he was very lucky. Usually people disappear. I was stunned. What was going on here, and what in the world does the color yellow have to do with it? It is unclear, but Lamers claims that he would get at least some theories during his stay. He tells the account of a woman friend of his whose brother had gone hiking in the mountains along with four others, after which they all vanished. After an intensive search finally the brother was found, alive but in a dazed state and looking undernourished and skeletal. When asked about what had happened to them the brother said he could not remember, but whatever it was had obviously and visibly traumatized him. No trace of the others was ever found. Lamers asked his friend what she thought had happened to them, and he says of her response and his reactions to it:
She said it was the Jin. Jin is Arabic for demon. She said many many people have disappeared in the mountains because of the Jin. I asked my engineer friend who I worked with about this early today. He said it happens often and reminded me of Wala Wala the village we had gone to. Entire cultures have developed around this problem. They wear only black because they believe this allows them to travel through the jungle undetectable by whatever it is that takes these people. There is something taking these people Whitley. Something terrible and evil in Sulawesi. The people of Sulawesi have come to terms with it and have tried to adapt themselves to deal with whatever it is. It has gone on long enough to bend culture. I will continue to investigate what this is. Is that what this was? A Jin? This makes sense considering that the population of the region is around 85% Muslim, but could there be any other explanation? He apparently did follow up on all of this, managing to get more information out of the locals, as well as from the lone survivor from that doomed trek as his memory came trickling back to him about that fateful hike. However, his story seems to make no real sense, and is so bizarre it leaves more questions than answers. Lamers tells Strieber of this additional information:
I found out he kept seeing what the Bugis call Jin Kurcaci. It means little demon people. These things do what is called “penculikan” or abduction. No one knows why they do this. But sometimes the people come back after a bit. The people or creatures who do this have a small nose and their eyes are small and black, but their mouths are very broad and when they smile it is very large compared to the rest of their face. He could not remember the color of their skin. I asked for a picture to be drawn. He managed a crude happy face with a nose consisting of a single line and a huge grimace. Is this Jin, some sort of evil forest people, or just folklore? What is the significance of the colors and why must people wear black? Does this somehow draw these forces in, and maybe they are attracted by these colors? It is very interesting to note that some of the most bizarre vanishings on record are theorized to have had some link to bright colors, according to missing persons investigator David Paulides, author of The Missing 411 series of books.
The boy was the only one who could see them out of the five. He kept seeing a lot of them but when he would try to show the others one of the four who disappeared could see them. He also saw a strange animal he could not recognize. These animals are the size of a horse with huge antlers. He said he saw herds of them. He could not understand where they came from or why there were so many. They not an animal indigenous to the area. There is no such known animal that big in Sulawesi. Apparently this is a widespread problem.
Paulides has researched strange vanishings all over the world and has compiled a sort of list of criteria that seem to be common to many of the cases. Examples include people disappearing practically right under the noses of nearby friends or family, bodies turning up without shoes or proper outdoor clothing, children who have gone missing only for their bodies to turn up in inaccessible areas where they could not possibly have climbed to on their own, belongings or clothing left behind often neatly folded or arranged, bodies that have turned up in areas that have already been thoroughly searched or are out of reach, and people who have disappeared without leaving a single scrap of evidence behind. There are also the fact that many of these disappearances seem to happen near bodies of water or where berries happen to be growing, that with bodies which are found the cause of death is often unclear or difficult to determine, that there is a lack of tracks, and that search dogs often cannot pick up the scent or are led to places such as sheer walls where no one could reasonably scale. Often people who were with the missing explain that they just happened to get separated somehow without being able to pinpoint when or how. Then there is the curious detail that many of the vanished just so happened to have been wearing bright colors.
This has been seen in many vanishings covered by Paulides, with perhaps the most well-known being the disappearance of 6-year old Dennis Martin. On June 14, 1969, Dennis was on a camping and hiking trip to the Great Smoky Mountains when he and his family stopped off at a grassy mountain highland meadow and popular stop-off point along the Appalachian Trail know as Spence Field. As the adults sat out on the grass chatting, Dennis, his brother, and two other boys on the trip thought it would be amusing to play a prank on their parents. They decided that they would split up, go out into the woods, and then simultaneously jump out from different directions to startle the adults in what was meant to be just harmless fun.
Three of the boys went one way and Dennis, who was the youngest, went the other. The reason he had been chosen to be on his own was that he was wearing a highly visible bright red shirt. This is something to remember in relation to this article, the bright colors. Just as planned, the three older boys jumped out and scared the adults, but then the men asked where Dennis was. Since the other boys had seen him just a few minutes earlier, they assumed that he had merely missed his cue and so they waited for him to jump out of the trees as well, but he never appeared.
Dennis’ father, Bill Martin, went out to get his son, expecting that he would be there hiding in the bushes as he had been instructed, but an immediate search of the area showed no signs of the boy, and calls into the woods went unanswered. Increasingly worried, Bill and Dennis’ grandfather, Clyde Martin, hiked out in different directions farther and farther from the place where the boy had last been seen and still they found nothing. Park Rangers were notified and a search was launched that would last until nightfall, when heavy rain began to come down along with thunder, which hampered efforts to find the boy and the search was called off until the following day with still no trace of where Dennis had gone off to.
In a rather ominous twist, a mere hours after Dennis had gone missing a family named the Keys reported that they had been hiking around 6 miles from Spence Field when they had heard a boy’s scream. The son also claimed to have seen movement in a bush which he at first had thought to be a bear, but turned out to be a man walking in the woods with something apparently slung over his shoulder. As spooky as this may seem, authorities determined that the location was too far away from Spence Field to have possibly have anything to do with Dennis within the time frame of events.
In the following days the search efforts would quickly grow in size to hundreds of people scouring the area, including park rangers, locals, volunteers, the FBI, National Guard, and even Green Berets and psychics, along with bloodhounds and helicopters, and meanwhile the news of the disappearance had started making major national headlines. Since Dennis was described as a robust, healthy boy with plenty of hiking experience it was thought that he was alive and would be found in short order, but continuing heavy rains flooding roads, as well as thick fogs, made efforts difficult. For their part, Dennis’s parents posted a hefty reward for any information leading to finding their son. Dennis Martin has never been found, and not a trace of what happened to him has ever been uncovered. Interestingly, this all fits several of Paulides’ criteria, including the brightly colored clothing.
Similarly there is the case of 4-year-old Alfred Beilhartz, who in the summer of 1938 was on a fishing and camping trip with his family at Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. As the boy and his parents were taking a hike along a river, little Alfred, who was wearing a brightly colored shirt, suddenly simply disappeared without explanation. One moment he had been there walking in a line behind them, and the next the parents had turned around to find he was gone without a trace. There had been no shout or sign of distress, and all calls to him went unanswered. He had seemingly just ceased to exist.
Although the parents claimed that the boy had gone nowhere near the water, authorities were nevertheless convinced that he had fallen into the river, and immediately went about blocking off the river so that it could be thoroughly searched and so that his body would not float too far away. A 6-mile stretch of the river where Alfred had vanished was searched and dredged for 5 full days without turning up any sign of the boy, and when bloodhounds were brought in they oddly tracked his scent to around 500 feet uphill from where his parents had been when he had disappeared, which was odd considering he had supposedly gone missing as he was walking behind them. Also strange was that allegedly the bloodhounds followed the trail for some time before reaching a fork and suddenly stopping and simply lying down, an odd behavior for trained scent dogs to display, and also strange because it seemed that the trail had just abruptly stopped to vanish just as surely as the boy had.
Even more bizarre than this was an odd report that came in from some hikers in the area in the early stages of the search, the very day after Alfred had vanished. The hikers, who were a couple, had been on Old Fall River Road about 6 miles away over rugged terrain and around 3,000 feet higher from where Alfred had disappeared, and at the time had had no idea that there was a missing boy in the area, yet they reported seeing a rather worrying sight. They claimed that they had seen a young boy perched up upon a high ridge in an area ominously called “The Devil’s Nest,” near the top of Mt. Chaplin. The hikers reported that the boy had been forlornly sitting alone up there and had then suddenly moved out of sight, which the hikers mysteriously allegedly said looked as if he were being “jerked back.” At the time they could not figure out how such a young boy would be out there in the remote wilderness by himself or how he could have possibly climbed up onto that formidably high ridge. According to the hikers, as soon as they had gotten home and seen the news, they had realized that the boy they had seen was the missing Alfred Beilhartz.
Authorities acted on the tip and made the journey out to the Devil’s Nest, a perilous hike through thick, unforgiving forested terrain littered with rough brush and dense trees, and there at the top of the looming ridge they could find no trace of the boy. Considering the difficulty of the terrain, the elevation, and the steep, treacherous climb up to the ridge on which the hikers had claimed to have seen the boy, park rangers came to the conclusion that it would have been impossible for the boy to have made the hike out there in the timeframe involved on his own, and that he could not have possibly climbed the ridge alone without specialized climbing equipment and experience. There are several weird details about this case. How did Alfred manage to just vanish right under his parents’ noses without making a sound? What happened to his scent trail and why did the bloodhounds following him act so oddly? How could Alfred hike all the way up Mt. Chaplin, trudging 6 miles and 3,000 feet through unforgiving perilous terrain in such a short time, and then climb up onto that high ridge by himself? What did the hikers mean that he was “jerked back”? We may never know, and Alfred Beilhartz has never been found. Oddly enough, it is reported that young little Beilhartz had been wearing brightly colored clothing at the time of his vanishing.
Such cases are numerous, and we also have the case of 3-year-old Jaryd Atadero, who in October of 1999 was staying with his father at a Christian retreat lodge at Poudre Canyon, Colorado. On October 2, Jaryd was out with 12 of the Christian group members on a hike along the Big South Trail when he somehow got ahead of the group and talked to some fishermen along the Cache la Poudre River, asking them if they’d seen any bears, to which they replied that the boy should get back with the others. Those fishermen would be the last ones to see Jaryd Atedero alive. In the wake of his disappearances a massive search using bloodhounds and aircraft was unable to find any trace of the boy, and it was largely assumed that he had fallen into the frigid waters of the river and drowned.
It would not be until 4 years later that he would finally be found, when on June 4, 2003 his remains were discovered up in a remote, inaccessible area up a steep incline about 500 feet above the trail he had vanished on. This is where the case gets weird. On the dead boy’s cranium were found a series of odd scratches that were assumed to be from a mountain lion, yet big cat experts pointed out that a cougar would have torn at the sweater and body near the neck and stomach, damage that was absent. Indeed, there were no other apparent injuries on the body. Paulides also claims that he spoke to forensics experts on the case who told him that, although the source of the scratches could not be determined, they were not from any known animal. Other odd details about the body were that the boy’s clothes had been turned inside out, and a single tooth from his mouth had been found placed upon a nearby log, strangely not overgrown with moss or vegetation considering that it had presumably been sitting there for 4 years. The clothes and shoes themselves were also surprisingly brightly colored and new looking for supposedly having been out in the elements for so long. And there is a key word here, they were brightly colored.
Adding to this strangeness surrounding the case of Jaryd Atadero are allegations made by the boy’s father, Allyn Atadero, that authorities were very secretive and dishonest about the whole incident, and seemed to be almost intentionally botching the investigation. One example is when the Atadero family was allegedly threatened with arrest if they tried to go off snooping around on the Big South Trail, and although it was claimed by authorities that the trail was the only way in or out of the canyon, this turned out to be a falsehood, as Allyn found records of various other entry and exit points. Another oddity was that Allyn claimed that he had discovered that the police were using his own shorts as a scent sample for the dogs rather than those of his son, and that when confronted about this glaring error in procedure they got confrontational and irritated, allegedly going so far as to threaten to call the search off. Allyn would also claim that although some strange hair samples had been collected from his son’s sweater, no test results were ever released and he was merely told that they were neither human nor mountain lion, but that he “shouldn’t worry about it.” To top it all off, Paulides also claims that authorities were highly uncooperative with his own investigation into the case, and that the FBI had refused to get involved. What in the world happened to Jaryd Atadero? Was this an animal attack, a kidnapping, or something more? It seems we may never know.
Mysterious cases like this go on and on, with that common thread going through them that they were all wearing brightly colored clothing at the time of their bizarre vanishings. Is this, as David Paulides and Lamers say, a determining factor in such vanishings? If so, then why should this be? Are the colors somehow attractive or maddening to whatever forces are taking these people? And now that we are on it what forces would those be? Is this extraterrestrials, evil spirits of some kind, Bigfoot, some sort of other mysterious animal, or what? One very interesting theory that has made the rounds is that perhaps some sort of large, unidentified winged beast is behind it all, perhaps its attention drawn by the bright colors. One commenter on our very own Mysterious Universe has said of this and how it relates to such vanishings:
I’m pretty sure I know what it is & I’m sure it’s also responsible for some of the National Forest missing adults. If these disappearances have anything to do with what I saw in 2006 in Colorado (less than one mile outside of Pike National Forest), then it’s likely that the same thing is responsible for the cattle mutilations as well: It is of course possible that the presence of bright colors could just be a coincidence. Perhaps it does not matter, and has simply been assigned value by Paulides and others, but then how would that explain the clear link supposedly conveyed to Lamers by the people of that remote area of Indonesia and their aversion to entering the jungle wearing anything other than white or preferably black? Is there any connection to be had here, and if so what is it? It is certainly interesting to note the similarities between Lamers’ stories on the bright colors and people reappearing with no memory of what had happened and the very similar Paulides cases in which the same thing happens. Are there mysterious forces drawn to these colors that somehow make these people disappear? There is no way to know, and it seems to lie beyond our comprehension, but until we do understand maybe don’t wear brightly colored clothing next time you are on that hike through the woods.
It’s a bird & it was massive; I startled it off my roof by stepping outside onto my front porch in the middle of the night. I had no idea there was anything there but when the door slammed behind me I heard a “scrabbling” sound; as if there were a small rockslide directly above me.I covered my head with my arms & tried to duck under the eaves when I heard a rippling sound. Almost exactly like the sound one of those huge flags make when a sudden strong gust of wind unfurls it.
Then, there was a boom. A percussive boom that my eardrums felt, to the point where I started to lose my balance & fall backwards. That’s when a huge shadow passed overhead. From 1.5 stories above me, clearing 50ft tall tree in the front yard. The shape of the shadow most resembled a vulture & I can’t conceive of the wingspan being less than 20ft.As it glided up it … screamed. A pulsating croak? Not sure quite how to describe it. It was not a sound I have ever heard before. Oddly; it didn’t seem to have flapped its wings again.I refused to think about it for about a year because it was so ridiculously improbable. When an inspection of the roof occurred, the comment was “It looks like Freddy Krueger attacked your roof!” Along with the gashes, there were a few puncture holes as well. So I started researching & haven’t stopped.

2023.06.08 17:50 asdfasdfsdaf234 Towing a 3,000 travel trailer with a truck with a 5000 lb towing limit. is this a good weight or too heavy optimally?
i've never towed anything on my ford 4.2 V6 Automatic f-150 which has a towing capacity of 5200 lb nor do i have any experience in towing anything.
would 3000lb be a good ratio of weight to towing capacity or is it on the heavier side than recommended in relation to the towing capacity? i am looking at the smaller travel trailers, like a coleman 17 foot trailer, the lighest version ways 3000 lb dry weight.
I will stay in an rv park for like a month, then i might drive 4 or 5 hour to a different campsite and stay there for 2 weeks. So i'll be driving the trailer once every 2 weeks to a month, and drive maybe 1-4 hours between sites. Only in the very beginning and the end of a like 5 month trip will i drive like 10 hours, but this will be broken up in smaller drives. So definately won't be driving every day with the trailer, the trailer will be parked in campground for at least 2 weeks to a month or even longer.
it'll probably around 3400 lb with all my stuff in inside of the trailer with full tank of water being 216 lbs from a 27 gallon water tank supply like the coleman travel trailers.

2023.06.08 15:34 Neither-Drag-8564 Mohican area and Wally Road Advice
| || |
I have a camping trip coming up at a campground south of the Wally Road bridge closure. The campground reccomends that RVs and Campers detour through the town of Greer via Rt 514. My question is, not having a large vehicle, has anyone taken a car down Rt 211 to get to Wally Rd? Is it passable or should I take the long detour? Is 211 paved or just stone/gravel? submitted by Neither-Drag-8564 to CampOhio [link] [comments]
This is not my first time at this campgroud and the last time I took a route other than Wally Rd, I wound up on some gravel, steep grade incline. The result traumatized any specific memory of the route (road names) from my brain. But again that was years ago and im not even sure if that was 211.
2023.06.08 04:24 hotasanicecube A weird Walmart experience.
Dropped in a Walmart (FL) after 1am, checked the signs and they said “no semi or trailer parking”. Slept a little late and my prox alarm alerted me to movement. It was security and she walked the whole van. Knocked and she said I had been there for a while and asked if I was waiting on someone (handicapped bus).
She seemed like she wanted to ask me more questions but my normal answer was “I’ve been here all night, If you want me to roll, I’ll roll”. She then pointed to a little lot on the property (about 50’ behind me at the tip) and said if you want to stay over there you can stay all week or month. Twice.
It CLEARLY was marked with “you will be towed” signs but turns out a manager of the store stayed in an RV at the entrance and it was like his little 4 row private campground. It was shitty though. Garbage filled carts, generators running. Trashy cars with plastic bags for screens, But quite likely, employees. I’ll keep this one under wraps because I’m not going to harsh his gig with travelers, But I’ve never been rousted by security and then invited to a private area.
Keep your shit tight, don’t litter or be a nuisance and Karma will come back. I stayed another night but I’m not into parking lot camping and I rolled out with the surf report at 5am.

The Port of Meow. Tristan thought he wouldn’t be surprised by the world’s naming conventions after he’d heard terms like ‘Myana,’ and ‘Onyans,’ but this one struck him as funny. Maybe it was the lack of sleep from their conditions on the boat. Every time one of the girls said it, he laughed.
“There are so many people,” Destiny murmured as they entered the port city. “And all the buildings are so close together!”
Lara inhaled a deep breath. “Wind brings so many flavors with her. I have never smelled so many spices.” She pointed at one building, then the next, then a third. “Earth is the ruler here. Each one of these structures begins and ends with him.”
It really was incredible. The strips of buildings carried a spirit of older Chinese architecture, using a bilateral symmetry that stemmed from one focal structure into secondary components on either side—like wings on a giant bird. He was fascinated in middle school by Asian and Middle-Eastern design, and to see it dominating an entire island in a completely different world was mind-boggling.
Such an intricate, elegant city. Called the Port of Meow.
Destiny gently touched his forehead with the back of her hand. “Tristan? Are you feeling alright?”
“Yes, sorry. I’m fine. Just tired.” Her skin felt cool against his. “I guess I did laugh at a weird time, huh?”
Destiny chewed her lip. “It isn’t just that. You’re very pale.”
Lara bent her knees and looked into his face. “My sister is correct, Young Master. I would advise we find a place to rest.”
A sure hand clapped him on his shoulder. Matt was suddenly beside him, his Party at his side. “Ready to get something to eat?”
Tristan’s chest tightened, and he licked his lips. He suddenly felt very dizzy. “C-could you show us where to stay? I’m not feeling well.”
Cannoli danced to his side, her hands deep inside her [Cat Pack]. “Poor Tristan! I may have a potion! Let me look!”
“That’s sweet of you, Cannoli, but we’ll take care of him,” Destiny said, favoring Tristan with a worried glance. “If we need anything, I’ll let you know.”
“The Spider Lily’s this way.” Ravyn grabbed Matt’s arm and tugged him away from Tristan. “Don’t crowd Tristan. He looks like he’s about to faint.” Thanks, Ravyn.
Destiny hooked her arm through Tristan’s, and Lara copied on his opposite side. They made their way through the crowds together, drawing the eyes of almost every catgirl they passed.
The port was bustling with activity. Sailors and merchants loaded boats on the multitude of docks while vendors in tents hawked last-minute travel supplies and whatever ‘San Specials’ were. In the sprawling wings on either side of the center building, there were small restaurants, shops, an armorer, and a tailor. Excited murmurs and laughter echoed from all angles, making it hard to hear one another as they fought through the throngs.
It was nothing like Venicia.
It turned out the Spider Lily was
the center building. An expansive inn lit by dozens of paper lanterns, with metal gates forged by geometric patterns. Opaque windows mirrored the gates’ rectangular motif, flecked with golden embellishments and pieces of colored glass.
Ravyn led them inside. Incense burned on a polished podium, and they were greeted by a pair of young women in high-collared dresses, their dark hair tied away from their faces.
“Welcome to the Spider Lily,” the woman in red said, bowing deeply. “You are Cailu’s companions, are you not?”
Ravyn made a sound between choking and gagging.
“You could say that,” Matt replied before Tristan could say anything. He nudged Ravyn with his elbow and offered a wry smile.
“Very good. I am Ayu, and this is Nalee. Your rooms will be free for the duration of your stay,” Ayu, the woman in blue, announced, copying her companion’s bow. “There are two suites on the second floor; one for each of you.”
Tristan exchanged a confused glance with Matt.
“Just two?” Keke asked first.
“Yes, miss. You will find four beds in each suite, as well as a full-service washroom. Is this not to your liking?” Nalee tilted her head to the side. “Perhaps we can find something more suitable?”
“No, that’s perfect. Thank you very much,” Tristan said with a wave of his hand. “It’s more
“Excellent, sir. We have stationed Kaori and Ratu on the floor as well. They will retrieve anything you require. Food, drinks, travel necessities, you need only say the word, and they will bring it to you,” Ayu continued. “Should they fail to meet your needs, Nalee and I will both see this rectified.”
“Pardon me, miss, but how will charges for these items be collected?” Ceres asked.
“Cailu has assured us that he will settle your tab,” Nalee said. “It is not yours to bear.”
Tristan heard Cannoli mutter to Keke, “We can order anything?
Cannoli took Buttons from her shoulder and looked at him excitedly. “We can get you so many peanuts!
Ravyn cackled. That was the laugh of a girl with dad’s metal credit card in her wallet.
“We will not cause Sir Cailu to regret this generosity,” Ceres replied with a deep bow and pointed glare at Ravyn. “It is a great kindness, and we thank you.”
“I just need some water,” Tristan said, leaning his head against Lara’s shoulder.
Destiny raised her hand. “Can we please get our key? We would like to go up now.”
“Of course, miss.” Nalee retrieved a key on a delicate chain from behind the podium and handed it to Destiny. “Please enjoy your stay.”
“Why don’t we head off to the Golden Dragon first?” Matt suggested to his Party. “We can come back and check on them after.”
Ravyn gawked. “Did you not hear what the lady just said?”
“I did. And I’m with Ceres on this one. Come on.” Matt waved his group outside.
Keke laughed as they filtered through the door.
“Let us go upstairs,” Lara said, squeezing Tristan’s arm.
“Yeah. Good idea.”
Destiny and Lara guided him up the two flights to the second floor, and Tristan’s vertigo grew worse. It was like a combination of seasickness and stepping off the teacup ride at an amusement park. The world would just not
“Hello, sir. My name is Kaori.” A green-haired girl bowed in the hallway of the second floor.
“And I’m Ratu. Just let us know if you need anything at all.” A head of short blonde hair ducked deep with her bow.
“Thank you both,” Tristan replied, unsure if he had the energy for proper introductions.
Destiny unlocked the door to their room and pushed it open. The dark hallway gave way to a room of colorful screens and vibrant tapestries. The single room was bigger than the apartment Tristan grew up in—each bed could fit three people without an issue.
As soon as they were inside, Destiny knelt to help Tristan take off his boots.
“Y-you don’t have to do that,” Tristan said, embarrassment burning into his face.
“I want to,” Destiny said, continuing to untie the laces.
Lara moved to one of the beds, turning down the blankets with expert precision. The sheets fell with perfect symmetry, the rectangles laying parallel to the headboard. She smoothed the bottom layer and stepped back, looking expectantly at Tristan.
“Girls—” he began.
“Please. Let us use all of this etiquette training.” Destiny laughed, sliding the second boot from Tristan’s foot. “We can’t let Kaori and Ratu show us up.”
“Alright,” he relented. “Just this once.”
Destiny took his hand and led him to the bed.
He stared at the freshly pressed white sheet for a long time. “Will you two join me?”
Destiny’s eyes widened, and she hissed in a tiny breath.
Lara took his hand in both of hers, her airy voice taking on a tone of concern. “Young master, your current physical state will not allow you to perform—”
“That’s not what I mean,” he cut her off, a little harsher than he meant to. “I’m sorry. What I meant was… I just want to be close to you right now.”
“Of course, Tristan,” Destiny replied softly. “Here, lie down.”
They situated him in the middle of the bed, making sure his feet were under the blankets and tucking him to the waist. Lara was the first to slide under the covers, wiggling her way to Tristan’s right side. He hooked an arm around her waist and pulled her close until her head rested on his shoulder.
“You are very warm,” she noted.
“And you’re very soft.” Tristan chuckled. “Destiny?”
Destiny turned multiple shades of red. She held her hands tightly clasped in front of her apron, her gaze never resting on one place. “I-I’m sorry. Is this really okay?”
“Yes,” he said, holding a hand out toward her. “Please?”
Destiny nodded and lifted the covers with care. One leg pressed beneath, then the other. She shifted forward, taking Tristan’s hand and letting him guide her to his side. With a slow exhale, she relaxed against him, trapping his left thigh between her legs.
“You’re soft, too,” Destiny whispered, wrapping her tail around his ankle.
“And you’re wonderful,” Tristan murmured. “Both of you are.” He yawned and closed his eyes, already feeling the warm descent into sleep.
On a foreign island, in a stranger’s bed, Tristan felt more at home than he ever had in Nyarlea.

Does anyone know where I can find a complete list of campgrounds and RV parks in Ontario. The main directories are showing 387 but I know that there's over 800 in Ontario.
