Reconciliation and Post-War Challenges: The Legacy of the 1957 Rumburg-Sordland War:
After the signing of the Estord Treaty, a new chapter began in Merkopa's history. The treaty established a series of conditions for the cessation of hostilities and the reconstruction of the nations involved in the 1957 Rumburg-Sordland War.
The Estord Treaty, signed by Beatrice Livingston, Queen of Rumburg; Anton Rayne, President of Sordland; Patricio Alvarez, Prime Minister of Lespia; Maartin Van Hoorten, Prime Minister of Agnolia; and Wiktor Smolak, President of Wehlen, defined the territorial division and terms for the region's reconstruction. Sordland annexed Tzarsborough and the surrounding areas, Wehlen incorporated Datefort and the nearby regions, Agnolia retook Dome, and Lespia gained advantageous trade benefits. Additionally, the Arcasian Treaty Organization (ATO) occupied bases and assumed control of military decisions in Rumburg.
Rumburg was held responsible for heavy war reparations, divided into annual installments over 25 years. These financial reparations imposed a significant burden on the country, further exacerbating its already weakened socioeconomic situation. Exploitation by Lespia also contributed to the challenges faced by Rumburg in the following decades.
Sordland, on the other hand, established a new region called Rumi in the annexed territory. To promote pacification and integrate the area, the citizens of the Rumi region were granted full civil rights. Political rights were gradually granted and came into effect in the 1961 elections, allowing for a controlled transition from a military administration to a regionalized civilian administration. Sordland also pressured Wehlen to ensure that the Datefort region and its inhabitants were treated with respect and humanity, avoiding any form of abuse or discrimination.
Weeks after the conflict, Queen Beatrice Livingston abdicated in favor of her daughter, Agatha Livingston, as a gesture to appease anti-monarchist sentiments. Months later, in 1958, Agatha approved the implementation of a fully representative monarchy, aiming to achieve internal pacification and the consolidation of the new government. This political change proved to be a positive sign for the reconciliation between Rumburg and Sordland.
In 1960, Agatha requested a meeting with Anton Rayne, then in his second term as Sordland's president, to negotiate the war debt. The meeting took place in Lachaven, and although Anton did not agree to reduce the reparation amounts, he agreed to extend the payment term from 25 to 35 years. This gesture demonstrated an openness to reconciliation and established a foundation for future friendlier diplomatic relations.
In the following years, diplomatic relations between Rumburg and Sordland were gradually restored. However, Rumburg's deep socio-economic problems persisted. The exploitation by Lespia and the costs of war reparations severely affected Rumburg's economy, resulting in significant challenges throughout the following decades.
The complete reconstruction of the region and the overcoming of these challenges would take time and joint effort. The international community played an important role in supporting economic development and promoting stability in Eastern Merkopa. Gradually, joint measures were implemented to strengthen the economy, invest in infrastructure, and create employment opportunities for the most affected populations.
As the decades passed, the wounds of war healed, and new generations emerged, bringing with them a perspective of peace and cooperation. Although the consequences of the Rumburg-Sordland war continued to be felt, the desire for reconciliation and stability prevailed among the nations involved.

2023.06.03 18:58 Those_Lingerers How badly is Ameriprise screwing us? (Details of 401k in post)
My husband opened an Ameriprise account in 2015 and pays a monthly fee ($200/mo) for a "financial advisor." I am unaware of what other fees (%) are charged and my husband doesn't know how to find this information. I posted already and received feedback from the community about how Ameriprise is more of an insurance company (they did try selling us whole life insurance as a financial strategy, we declined). Of course I discussed with my husband and he now sees the red flags and is open to changing where we invest. I know next to nothing about this stuff and was hoping to get some feedback on how badly we may have lost money with them. Also, I have read that Vanguard is great, but can someone break down exactly how we go about moving to this money to another company? We have no idea what to do next. My husband is pretty hands off, hence why he paid someone to manage it for him. I'm trying to educate myself on these things.
Here are the details I have on the Ameriprise account...

2023.06.03 18:24 400double How do I get better at chess?
Every move I make on the chessboard feels like a tragic misstep, echoing the state of my own life. My rating, once a beacon of hope and achievement, now taunts me mercilessly. It sits there, glaring at me from the screen, a numerical representation of my failure. Each loss pulls me deeper into the abyss of self-doubt and despair, suffocating any remnants of confidence I once possessed.
The chess pieces mock me with their stoic indifference, as if they know the torment I endure. The pawns advance effortlessly, mocking my inability to protect what is dear to me. The knights gracefully leap across the board, dancing circles around my slow, ponderous moves. The bishops, ever watchful and cunning, expose the flaws in my strategy with ruthless precision. And the queen, oh, the queen. She reigns supreme, a reminder of my own shattered aspirations.
Every defeat chips away at my spirit, leaving me more fragile with each passing game. I feel the weight of disappointment settle upon my shoulders, as if the chessboard has transformed into a battlefield where my self-worth is the casualty. The sound of my opponent's victory, the triumphant "checkmate," resounds in my ears like a resounding condemnation, amplifying the whispers of inadequacy that plague my mind.
I see others around me, their ratings soaring like the majestic flight of an eagle, while I remain tethered to the ground, bound by my own limitations. The chess community, once a source of camaraderie and shared passion, now feels like an impenetrable fortress that I am forever barred from entering. I watch as they analyze positions with ease, effortlessly strategizing their way to victory, while I struggle to make sense of the labyrinthine complexities that confound me.
Days bleed into nights, merging into an indistinguishable blur as I obsess over every mistake, every missed opportunity. The weight of my low rating feels like an anchor, dragging me further away from the light of hope. I question my abilities, my worth, and the purpose of my existence. How did I become trapped in this cycle of defeat and despair?

2023.06.03 18:08 secessus logistics of cooking with excess solar power
It's been partly cloudy all day. My bank got fully charged by 11am but it was not clear how much more sun I would get or when I would get it. Options:
meat loaf in crockpot
My recipe was designed for a 1# of ground beef and a 3qt crock. I broke that crockpot (
cracked the crock insert) so I have been cooking in a 4qt or a 2qt I picked up at a thrift store.
- 4qt - 5 hours @ 175 = 875Wh
- 2qt - 5 hours @ 95w = 475Wh
While the power requirements for both are substantial, the main problem was the long cook time. If cloud cover gets heavy late in the day I wouldn't have time for the bank to recover.
rice-a-roni in the rice cooker
I've
had good results with this in the past and it's a good fallback for me.
6c rice cooker - 0.75 hours @ 271w = 203Wh
decision
I ended up making Rice-A-Roni Chicken and Garlic flavor. I threw in about a half-pound of fried chicken leftovers which I'd deboned before putting in the 20L fridge.
results The addition of chicken extended cooking time to ~55mins, so the new numbers are
6c rice cooker - (55/60) hours @ 271w = 248Wh
The short cooking time left me with more opportunities to recharge the bank before the sun gets too low to help much.

2023.06.03 17:14 fitzafnu MD port authority planned Patapsco CAD site
Background:
The Maryland Port Authority has to constantly dredge the Baltimore Harbor, shipping terminals, and shipping channels to keep them open. Much of the dredge removed from the Baltimore harbor and Patapsco River near old industrial sites is contaminated with heavy metals, oils, and other toxic "forever" chemicals. The Maryland Port Authority (MPA) has to dry and store this dredged material in special "containment sites" because it is unsafe for human exposure. (See
https://maryland-dmmp.com/). Before the 1970s, this material was often dumped back into the Chesapeake Bay. After ecological awareness arose in the 1970s and dumping was regulated, MPA was forced to create diked land-based dredge containment facilities to dry and store dredged material.
These sites, once created, are forever contaminated. MPA has done its best to create these sites where they make the least impact - often in already-contaminated abandoned industrial areas. MPA also creates conservation areas to make amends for the harm, makes clean dredge available for shoreline restorations and construction projects, makes contaminated dredge available for re-use research, and in some cases recreates islands lost to erosion (Hart-Miller Island, Poplar Island, and James and Barren Islands) using dredged material.
After significant pushback from communities near Hart-Miller Island for decades and years of litigation, MPA shut down the Hart-Miller dredge containment facility before its completion and shifted their attention to creating dredge containment sites near Baltimore in already-contaminated industrial areas next to Fort Armistead (Cox Creek DMCF) in Anne Arundel County and in Masonville next to Brooklyn. Ongoing dredging activities and plans to fill these sites to heights of 60 feet or higher with contaminated dredge and their runoff are already a significant concern for the quality of the water and the aquatic life in the Patapsco and its tidal tributaries. A potentially even greater concern is that because MPA is running out of land-based locations to contain contaminated dredge, it now plans to create Confined Aquatic Dredge (CAD) sites in the seabed of the Patapsco River to essentially bury contaminated dredge underwater in the sea floor. The first MPA full scale CAD site is planned to be built one mile off the shore of the communities of Stoney Beach and Riviera Beach near the entrance to Stoney Creek.
The planned Patapsco CAD site will be up to 220 acres in size. MPA plans to remove clean seabed material from the site for several months and make it available to construction companies and for shoreline restoration efforts and then replace it with contaminated dredge material for several more months sometime in the next year. MPA asserts that unlike historic dredge dumping, this CAD site will be "capped" and "safe". However, there will inevitably be a significant release of contaminants and turbidity into the Patapsco from this activity and permanent impact within and near the CAD site. Contaminated dredge material suspended in water can't be totally contained. Moreover, long-term ecological impacts from leaching and seabed shifting can't be predicted.
Concerns:
Northern Anne Arundel communities near the planned CAD site are very concerned about several potential issues related to its creation:
- The noise from planned 24/7 dredging for several months at a time as well as spotlighting at night since this will be over a mile closer to Stoney Beach and Riviera Beach than the shipping channel.
- The safety of residents in nearby waters to swim, fish, and engage in watersports on the Patapsco and in Stoney Creek, Cox Creek, and downstream tributaries during and after dredging from exposure to chemical and biological toxins released into the water.
- The impact of such dredging on aquatic life and ecosystems including waterfowl that depend on it.
- The long-term ecological impact on the CAD site, nearby shorelines, and the tidal waters around it.
- The potential short and long-term geographical extent of ecological and human exposure to released toxins given unpredictable winds, currents, storms, tidal swings, and sea level rise.
We have questions related to these concerns and would like a greater understanding of how impacts will be measured and mitigated and what the potential risks to our communities might be - including being exposed to chemical and biological toxins. Of particular concern if this program moves forward is how will toxins be measured, where will they be measured, how will communities be notified if toxins in the water around their shoreline reaches harmful levels, and what might the long-term effects of such toxins be that might settle around our shorelines?
While we are concerned, we also appreciate that MPA is creating conservation sites such as the Swan Creek Wetlands next to the Cox Creek facility and making clean dredge material available at little or no cost to communities engaged in shoreline restoration efforts - including Stoney Beach which is planning an important natural shoreline project to protect a highly eroded natural area at our point where the Patapsco meets Stoney Creek. This greatly reduces the cost of shoreline restoration.

| A little long, but I hope it's worth reading Koovangam Village of Ullndurpettai, Tamil Nadu, celebrates India's biggest transgender festival that is the Koovagam Festival. This village is also the abode of deity Aravana. Aravana or Iravan is the God of transgenders who was born before marriage to its parents, Arjuna and Ulupi. He was the one who sacrificed himself to Lordess Kali on the 18th day of the Mahabharata war to make Pandavas conquer the battle.Aravana desired not to die unmarried and since he was about to die the next day, women refused to marry him. They were scared of widowhood and the post-life turmoils from the next day of marriage. However, Krishna in Mohini Avatar married him and Aravan died the next day. Koovangam is celebrated in the month of Chaitra (March/ April as per the English calendar). It is an 18-day festival. The program involves 16 days of joy with recreational activities likes skits, blood donation camps, beauty pageant awards, etc. This event is celebrated among 30,000 transgender community and is very vibrant and eclectic. After 16 days of fun on the 17th day, women visit Koothandawar temple and marry Aravan. They get themselves dressed up as Mohini (the incantation of Vishnu) wearing beautiful Bangles, Saree, Gajra, Gold, and Silver ornaments. The very next day, called Azhukalam their ornaments and vermilion are removed and they are supposed to mourn the death of Aravan wearing a white saree. The transgender community is also named Aravanis as they are descendants of Aravana. This festival makes their identity being acknowledged and they feel proud to flaunt their sexuality. There have also been traces of ancient Sanskrit texts for 'ayoni' or non vaginal sex, gods taking avatar in different sex or gender, the transformation of Amba to Shikhandi. Furthermore, Krutivasa Ramayan also involves a tale where 2 queens conceives a child together then name him Bhagirath. I just wanted to share a story (with some research obviously) that I've heard and thought it could be interesting. We also need to accept and embrace the fact that existence of every entity in our society is mandatory for good growth, developing empathy, and a wider perspective. Wishing you all, a Happy Pride Month as well :) What are YOUR views on this? submitted by _womanofculture to hinduism [link] [comments] |
2023.06.03 16:48 ToLiveandDieinL8 Create your supergroup from artists/bands you don’t like!
Hey everyone!
There are bands/artists we love and those we don’t. But even with the ones we don’t, there’s often something redeeming about them. So it got me wanting to ask this community to create a supergroup from bands/artists you aren’t particularly keen on but you think could shine in another group. Maybe it’s a lead singer with a great voice being wasted. Or a standout musician dragged down by the rest of the group.
The only rules are the band should be a minimum of a trio and to be honest! For instance I know a lot of people don’t like Queen or Journey, so there’s nothing wrong with choosing really strong performers like Mercury or Perry. If that’s how you feel go for it!
Here’s mine to start:
Lead Singer: Paul Rodgers. A great voice that never had the songs to match it- either with Free or Bad Company.
Lead Guitarist: Gary Richrath. I don’t like much about REO Speedwagon. But everything I do like comes from Richrath. His guitar always sounds great and he almost salvages some of their 80’s guff with his work. My favourite song of theirs is Take It On The Run and it was written by him. I think he could really shine in a group that wasn’t hamstrung by 80’s schmaltz.
Rhythm Guitarist: Paul Stanley. Solid singer and solid player. Similar to Richrath, he’s responsible for the few Kiss songs I actually like.
Bass Player: John Taylor. Ok, I know I’m bending (breaking) the definition of classic rock here. But John Taylor’s bass work for Duran Duran is seriously good. Definitely the standout performer in the band and I think he could adapt his style for another group.
Drums: Phil Collins. This almost feels like a cheat. But honestly I’ve never really liked his solo work or most of his work with Genesis (I’m the opposite of Patrick Bateman really). No doubt he could do the job though.
Looking forward to hearing from everyone else!

2023.06.03 15:47 HopeTroll Boulder Crime Coverage 1996 and old Article - Boulder's safe but lock your doors
| The Ramseys have been accused of being naive. Based on perusing 1996-era local periodicals, crimes were not being reported on unless the victim was murdered. Otherwise, the crime would only be reported on once someone was being tried for it. I'd find an article about someone being tried for intruder sa, then I'd work backwards to try to find the article that notified the community of the crime and couldn't find anything. If no one was tried for the crime of sa, it might never be reported on. Amy's mother had the pepper spray which scared off Amy's attacker, due to JonBenet's murder. (btw, pepper sprayed and jumping off the 2nd storey in the dark, he definitely got injured, not that he sought medical treatment for it.) I found a 1985 article indicating Boulder was safe, if you locked your doors. https://www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org/?a=d&d=OWL19851031-01.2.11&srpos=1&e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxCO%7ctxTA-%22Be+aware%3b+violence%22-------2------ Be aware; violence does exist in Boulder Violent crime in Boulder seems like a rare or non-existent occurrence. The truth is that violence is as prevalent in Boulder as anywhere else, and Boulderites need to stop ignoring it with their self-righteous, shove-it-under-the-carpet attitudes. People tend to ignore crime until it affects them personally, but then it's 100 late. My father related an incident concerning a black friend of his: When he went home one day, he caught four white boys taking some things from his 'apartment. When he tried to stop them they beat him with a bat and with his radio. He fell to the floor, but they continued kicking him. He couldn't do anything. It reminded him of the Ku Klux Klan. When he finally caught his second wind, his attackers had fled. You may find it hard to believe that such an event could happen here, in Boulder. But the thing that disgusted me the most about this story is that 24 CU students watched the incident from their balconies. A neighbor even took the opportunity to steal his stereo speakers while he was being beaten up. The students didn't help. They didn't even call the police, they just stood by— dumbfounded. Afterwards they said to him, "We saw it all." O Over the summer, a friend of mine who attended college was raped in the relative safety of her own apartment. While sleeping in her bed, she was awakened by a strange man who broke into her home shining light in her eyes. She never saw his face. Another woman, whom I knew briefly, was found dead in Boulder Creek. One morning i read an article in the paper about a woman wearing a white dress found in the Creek. Later, I realized that I had talked to that same woman just the day before — I even remember the white dress that she wore. Then, I realized that I would never see her again. The cause of her death is still unknown. These are crimes that have lept from the comfortably impersonal black and white pages of the newspaper into my personal life. The crime rate in Boulder may not be comparable to the crime in the Bronx, Detroit or Los Angeles. It may not even be as high as the crime rate in Denver. But, low statistics don't mean that crime does not exist here. For those who believe Boulder to be a haven from crime and see only the safety a small city supposedly offers, stop ignoring the facts. Don't ignore the few crimes which could give our city a bad name, or make reality a little less pretty. Acknowledge these acts of crime for what they are — immoral and frightening. What can be done to prevent these scenarios from happening? Be aware! You must understand that we do not live in a crime free society. Prevent crimes from happening to other people by helping them if they need help. Prevent crimes from happening to yourselves by locking your doors. Be conscious of where you are. If you are not in a safe place, be aware of that fact. Perhaps if my father's friend had locked his door, or if the woman who had been raped had locked hers (both had been unlocked), they might have been spared. The Crimestoppers program and neighborhood watches are useful community services. Walk and ride services are offered throughout the CU campus at night. Don't take any chances walking in an unsafe area alone. It's narrow-minded to assume that a crime will always happen to the next guy, and never to you. I am not telling you to be paranoid, nor am I trying to make you nervous. I am iust telling you to stay on your guard. Don't let someone else, or yourself, be hurt by ignorance. We cannot prevent all crimes from occurring, but we don't have to make it easy for the criminals. If you never get mugged, or raped or beaten up, then you're lucky. But Lady Luck doesn't grace everyone with her presence all the time. Be aware! TF l am not telling you to be paranoid, nor am I trying to make you nervous. I am just telling you to stay on your guard. submitted by HopeTroll to JonBenet [link] [comments] |
2023.06.03 15:37 Karmademon727 My boy just finished shedding and now he's a pretty orange pancake
2023.06.03 15:36 rhymeswithsplat 50 [M4F] Canberra - Come and join my entourage. The pay is crap, but the hours are good.
I’m a married guy who’s realised very late in the piece that most of his friends:
(a) were his wife’s friends first; and (b) probably wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire.
Therefore, there’s several vacancies going in the entourage at the moment. We can start off with messages and chat here, then move somewhere else (Telegram/Discord/some other third thing) if we feel so inclined. At the moment, I’m really just looking for people (preferably female, 40-55) to chat with about random stuff - if we end up meeting in person, that’d be great, but it’s not the end of the world if our friendship is largely restricted to memes and GIFs.
Hobbies and interests include: movies (anything that can make me laugh - bonus points for car chases, explosions, and cameo appearances by Godzilla), music (pretty much everything except C&W), community radio, theatre, AFL, NRL, drinking more coffee than is remotely healthy, and lifting things down from high shelves for people shorter than me.
I tend to be a bit on the shy side at first, but once I feel comfortable with a new person, I like to think I’m fun to have around. My sense of humour can be a bit strange at times, but I try to keep that in check until I’m sure of my audience.
Thanks for reading this far - I hope to hear from you.

2023.06.03 15:35 CNard12 Rookie Bi-Weekly Analysis #4
Rookie Performance Evaluation 4
With so many players in the MLB, some of the newest players get lost behind some of the high profile names. We are here today to evaluate every rookie who has played this year and highlight the top performances of the last two weeks and for the entire year. This week Josh Jung murdered some baseballs, Grant Anderson struck out seven in his debut out of the bullpen, and Bobby Miller shut down the Braves (and Nats).
Top Bi-Weekly Performances
American League: - Josh Jung (TEX 3B): Josh Jung continues to dominate at the plate, winning back to back AL rookie of the month awards in April and May. Josh Jung ended the month of May by slugging for 5 doubles, 1 triple and 4 home runs. Jung leads all third baseman in runs and batting average and leads all rookie batters in runs (4), hits (61), home runs (12), and RBIs (37). In his last 10 games, Jung had 9 extra base hits. Offensively, Jung is already worth 2 WAR and has only gotten better throughout the year. Jung sees the ball well, hitting 50.5% over 95 mph (top 90% in the league) and has been able to barrel 12.2% of pitches seen (top 81% in the league). Defensively Josh Jung is in the bottom half of 3rd baseman, having negative -2 defensive runs saved and -1 outs above average. Despite his below average defense, Josh Jung has been one of the best third baseman in the majors all season.
- Masataka Yoshida (BOS LF): The Japanese superstar is doing all he can to keep the Red Sox afloat. Yoshida continues his hot streak, batting .348/.412/.500 in the the last 15 days. After a somewhat slow start to the season, Yoshida has emerged as one of the two big favorites for AL rookie of the year (along with Josh Jung). Yoshida still only has 21 strikeouts and walks on the year through 48 games on the season. Yoshida will put the ball in play and will rarely kill a batting rally with a strikeout. He hardly chases the ball and is top in the league on whiff rate. Yoshida has adapted to MLB pitching very quickly and will remain a superstar for years to come.
- Logan Allen (CLE SP): The Guardians have a loaded starting pitching staff with the return of Aaron Civale and Triston McKenzie. Logan Allen, along with rookies Tanner Bibee, Hunter Gaddis, and Peyton Battenfield, has shined in the starting rotation. Allen had his best game of the season, going 7 innings against the Baltimore Orioles allowing only 3 hits, no earned runs, and striking out 10. Through 7 starts in the year. In his last three starts, Allen has only allowed 4 earned runs through 18.2 innings. Of the four rookie starting pitchers for Cleveland, Allen has pitched the most innings (39.2) and holds the lowest ERA (2.72). Allen’s next start is scheduled on June 3rd against the Minnesota Twins.
- Louie Varland (MIN SP): Varland pitched seven shutout innings against the Houston Astros. Varland has pitched back-to-back quality starts in 4 of his last five starts. The only game Varland did not get a quality start was against the Angels, where he gave up only 2 earned runs in 5 innings. Varland primarily throws a 4-seam (42%) and cutter (30%) and goes to his slider (12%) and changeup (12%) to put batters away. Varland hardly walks batters but gives up a lot of hard contact. Nonetheless Varland has pitched effectively, limiting the damage done in most games he has started. Varland's next start is projected to be on June 6th against the Tampa Bay Rays.
- Ryan Noda (OAK 1B): Ryan Noda powered a three-run home run to snap the Athletic’s 11-game losing streak. In the last 15 games, Noda has batted .256 with 3 home runs and 3 doubles on 11 hits. Noda hits 48.2% of balls 95 mph or higher and barrels 16.9% of pitches. Despite this, Noda ranks in the bottom percentile in whiff rate. Noda whiffs on 36% of fast balls, 42% in breaking balls, and 38% of offspeed pitches. Noda has struck out in 33% of his plate appearances (61 strikeout total) but simultaneously ranks in the top percentile in walks taken (35 walks total).
- Zach Neto (LAA SS): Despite all the preseason hype for Anthony Volpe and Gunnar Henderson, Zach Neto has quietly emerged as the most consistent bat for rookie AL shortstops. Only 22 years old, Neto was the first player from the 2022 MLB draft to make the majors. Defensively, Neto has been steller. In 44 games, Neto has already racked up .8 defensive war and has generated 2 more outs above average than other shortstops. In the last 15 days, Neto has 11 hits with 4 doubles and a home run. Neto had small injury scare against the Marlins with a finger contusion, but has already made it back into the starting lineup.
- Grant Anderson (TEX RP): Grant Anderson has only played in one game this season but I figured he deserved a special shoutout. In his major league debut, Anderson pitched 2 and 2/3rd innings out of the bullpen striking out 7 of the 9 batters. Anderson only gave up one hit and earned the win against the Detroit Tigers.

National League: - Bobby Miller (LAD SP): The Dodgers #2 prospect has done nothing but impress. In his first two starts on the season, Miller has posted a 1.64 ERA through 11 innings. Miller equally throws a sinker, changeup, slider, and 4-seam fastball. On his fastball, Miller averages 99 mph on his sinkers and 4-seam and sometimes will go to his curveball to strike out batters. In his debut, Miller went 5 innings and only one earned run on 4 hits against the Atlanta Braves. He followed his debut by going 6 innings, allowing only 1 earned run on four hits. Bobby Miller's next scheduled start is June 4th against the New York Yankees.
- Spencer Steer (CIN 3B): Spencer Steer uses every side of the field. In the last 15 days, Steer has batted .389/.424/.667 with 4 doubles, one triple, and three home runs. Steer currently leads NL rookies in hits (59), RBIs (T28 with Outman), and doubles (T15 with Tovar). Steer has recently returned to his 2022 self hitting 8 home runs on the season and putting the ball consistently in play. Steer has struggled greatly defensively with -8 outs above average at both first and third base and generating -.4 WAR on the season. He ranks in the bottom 1% of outs above average and, when fielding, is completely 7% of plays as expected at both first base and third base. Despite these struggles, Steer’s production at the plate has lead him to be named the National League Rookie of the month for May.
- Matt McLain (CIN SS): The Red’s #5 prospect made his major league debut after TJ Friedl was moved to the 10-day injured list . In the last 15 days, McLain has the most at bats (57), hits (T21 Steer) and runs (T11 Steer) in the National League. McLain won this week’s player of week and continues to bat .329/.390/.486 in 16 games. McLain is primarily causing damage against fastballs and breaking balls, batting over .400 on such pitches. Defensively, McLain has been stellar. In only 16 games, he has generated 2 outs above average at shortstop and has added 5% success rate at the position off 43 attempts. If McLain can continue his success at the plate, along with fellow ROY contender Spencer Steer, then they can help Cincinnati compete for a relatively week NL Central division (who knows what may happen if the Reds call up fellow shortstop Elly de la Cruz).
- Corbin Carroll (ARZ LF): Corbin Carroll continues to impress and at this point I feel like I am repeating myself. The 22 year old left-fielder has power, defense, and speed. Carroll has helped the Diamondbacks to take control (or at least tie) in the National League West. In the past 15 days, Carroll has slugged for 4 doubles and three home runs on 15 hits. He leads the national league in stolen bases and has a real shot at joining the 20 / 20 club as a rookie. On the year, Carroll’s slash line is .287/.372/.516. Of all rookies, Corbin Carroll leads in WAR, already accumulating 2.1 on offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Carrol has generated 2 outs above average and has added 2% to the expected fielding average in left field. Expect to see Carroll on these lists for the rest of the season.
- Patrick Bailey (SF C): Joey Bart was thought to be the replacement at catcher for the San Francisco after the departure of Buster Posey. With everyone’s focus on Bart, Bailey went under the radar. In 11 games, Bailey has batted .333/.350/.564 with 12 hits, of which 3 were doubles and 2 were home runs. In the minor’s. Bailey was praised for his framing abilities behind the plate. If Bailey can continue his success at the plate, San Francisco may be posed well at the catcher position for years to come.
- Will Brennan (CLE RF) - Although he is not a batter that consistently hits the ball hard, Will Brennan, in the last 15 days, has 12 hits in 12 games including 3 doubles and 1 home run.. He is batting .364/.400/.515 and has been reliable at the plate when batters are at first base. Brennan has a batting average of .318 with a runner at 1st (23 plate appearances) and batting .500 with runners at 1st and 2nd (6 plate appearances). Though Will Brennan did kill a bird on a ground-ball single last week. So… he has that going against him.

Worst Bi-Weekly Performances:
- Brice Turang (MIL 2B) - In the last 14 games, Turang is batting only .077/.122/.154. In his last seven games, Turang only has one base hit. In his last 15, Turang only has 3. Turang, on the season, has struck out in 27% of his plate appearances and barrels on only 3.6% of pitches. Turang primarily is struggling in making contact with offspeed pitches, whiffing on 40% of those seen.
- James Outman (LAD OF) - After starting the season hitting everything out of the park, Outman bat has cooled off immensely. In his last 10 games, Outman only has two singles and is batting .074/.182/.074. Outman hits the ball hard when he makes contact, but has whiffed on 40.4% of pitches seen. Outman has striked out in 35% of his at bats. Outman leads all rookies in strikeouts and 5th in the majors. Defensively, Outman has been above average in furling in the outfield. He is converting 3% more outs than estimated success rate and has created 3 outs above average in the outfield.
- Anthony Volpe (NYY SS) - Defensively, Anthony Volpe has been phenomenal at shortstop. The Yankee’s #1 prospect is only 22 years old and already has .7 defensive war. Volpe has recently struggled at the plate. He is second among rookie pitchers in strikeouts (68) and 8th in the majors. On the season, Volpe is only batting .192/.270/.355. But when Volpe does get a hit, he hits for power and brings speed on the basepaths. Volpe has 13 steals on the season and has yet to be caught stealing.
- Karl Kauffmann (COL SP) - Kauffmann made his major league debut on May 19th and has not had a good time. In three starts, Kaufman has posted an 11.37 ERA and earned 3 losses. In his first start, Kauffman went 4.1 innings against Texas and allowed 4 earned runs off seven hits. In his next start, Kaugment again went 4.1 innings against Miami ang gave up 5 earned runs on 6 hits. In his final game, he went 4.0 innings against Arizona and allowed 7 earned runs on 9 hits. In all three games combined, Kauffman only struck out 7 and walked 8. Kauffman is only averaging 90 mph on his fastball and has left too many pitches in the middle of the strike zone.
Shout out to Miles Mastrobuoni as well who is batting .053 in 9 games (19 plate appearances) and for having an ERA of 108.

My Early Rookie of the Year
American League: - Masataka Yoshida (BOS LF) - See my blurb above
- Josh Jung (TEX 3B) - See my blurb above
- Esteury Ruiz (OAK CF) - In 58 games, Ruiz is already at 28 stolen bases. ALthough Ruiz is not hitting for extreme power, his speed is turning almost half of his base hits into what is essentially a double. In most offenses that are not the Oakland Athletics, this would typically translate to more runs and have them take leads early on balls just put in play. Among qualified rookies in the American league, Ruiz ranks 3rd in batting average, T1st (with Jung) in hits, and 1st in doubles. Ruiz does rank in the bottom percentile for hard hit percentage (1%), barrel rate (5%) and walk rate (5%).
- Hunter Brown (HOU SP) - In 11 games, Hunter brown has a 3.64 ERA and recently overtaken Kodai Senga for the lead in strikeouts for rookie pitchers. Brown struggled in his last start against Minnesota, giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits. This was after Brown had pitched back-to-back quality starts against the Oakland As (7 IP 2 ER and 6 IP 1 ER).
- Logan Allen (CLE SP) - See my blurb above
- Bryce Miller (SEA SP) - The Mariners #2 prospect dominated the league in his first five starts going at least 6 innings in each and allowing only four runs in total. Miller only had one hiccup game in which he allowed 8 earned runs in 4.2 innings against the New York Yankees. Miller's success has been largely in part in limiting walks and throwing many strikes for weak contact. Miller is top in the league in walk rate only allowing walks in 2% of at bats. Miller primarily throws his fastball 68% of the time and goes to his offspeed pitchers to put batters away. Miller is set to start on June 4th against Nathan Eovaldi of the Texas Rangers.
- Yennier Cano (BAL RP) - In his first 9 innings of the year, Cano did not allow a single base hit. Can has 30 strikeouts on the season through 30 innings of relief. In 5 save opportunities, Cano has successfully earned 4 saves with a 0.93 ERA and a WHIP of 0.59. Cano remains the secondary closer behind Felix Bautista, used primarily to maintain leads in close games and as the set-up man for the 9th inning.

National League: - Corbin Carroll (ARZ LF): See my blurb above.
- Spencer Steer (CIN 3B): See my blurb above.
- Kodai Senga (NYM SP): In his last start, Kodai Senga pitched 7 innings of 1 hit baseball against the Philadelphia Phillies. Senga ranks first among national league pitchers in strikeouts and second in innings pitched (behind Ryne Nelson). Kodai Senga strikes out 29.8% of batters but gives up lots of hard contact. Batters are still only batting .125 against his ghost fork and strikes out 59.1% of batters as a putaway pitch. This is primarily because batters have a 59.1% whiff rate on his forkball (66 PA) and his slider (7 PA). Senga is scheduled to pitch on June 4th against the Toronto Blue Jays’ Yusei Kikuchi.
- Ezquiel Tovar ( COL SS): In 55 games on the season, the Colorado shortstop has accumulated 46 base hits in 55 games. Tovar leads all NL rookies in doubles (16) and is currently slashing .241/.286/.398. Defensively, Tovar has been exceptional at shortstop accumulating 0.9 defensive war. Tovar has 6 outs above average at shortstop and has successfully converted 3% more plays than the estimated success rate.
- James Outman (LAD CF): See my blurb above.
- Francisco Alvarez (NYM C): The Mets #1 prospect has taken the league by storm. Alvarez has been above average in framing especially above the zone and has 5 blocks above average. Alvarez however has struggled in maintaining run control having -3 CS above average. At the plate, Alvarez has 6 doubles and 8 home runs on the season in 35 games with a slash line of .252/.308/.523.

The stats I used for this analysis were prior to any games on Friday May 2nd. If you want to see all the rookies I reviewed and their stats as of me writing this I have attached a (google sheet link here)[

I am primarily a Chicago Cubs fan so you will likely know more about your team than me, so I apologize if I may have overlooked or underlooked anything. Let me know if there are any memorable moments I may have missed or your own hot takes.

2023.06.03 15:31 Most_Investigator833 Oda, this retcon is not so great -spoiler from 1085
I have to say it. This thing Is ridiculous. A pirate with the D. In the name saves your country, the same D. from the name of you long Lost Queen (or maybe of whole Nefertari dinasty), and you don't say a thing, not a comment like "It has to be destiny" or anithing like that. And all of sudden, 20 tears later, It comes out that one of the most important royal of your country is called Lili D. Nefertari. No way community can buy that.
EDIT: for all people that say Cobra discover the name of Lili recently, he said the letter Is passed down front generation to generation of kings. So, unless Cobra's father passed away recently, he probably knew the D. before Alabasta arc.

2023.06.03 15:05 zakian3000 Statement Announcing the Commissioning of a statue of the late HRH Queen Elizabeth II and the QEII Culture Fund
Deputy Speaker,
As Chancellor of the Exchequer I am delighted to announce that His Majesty’s 33rd Government is proud to be commissioning a statue of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, to finally occupy the currently and long-standing empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square in London.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second ruled this nation for over seventy years, celebrating her Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which we all remember fondly I am certain. Little did we know at that time that a few short months later we would be mourning the loss of Her Majesty, and a new monarch would be taking over the reins of the throne.
The fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square was originally intended to hold an equestrian statue of William IV, but remained empty due to insufficient funds - to this day it is used for various art installations given its proximity to The National Gallery. It is time to populate the plinth with something permanent, something of national importance, something that will stand there for centuries to come.
The plinth has unofficially been pledged to permanently hold a statue of Queen Elizabeth the Second since Ken Livingstone was the Mayor of London - it is time for us to make good of that promise.
It is only right that the statue is equestrian in nature, both because of the original intention of the plinth but also due to Her Majesty’s great love of horses - so we are proposing to commission a bronze statue of Her Majesty mounted atop her reported favourite horse ‘Burmese’.
The cost of the statue; in material cost, construction and design, and licensing through the Greater London Assembly is estimated to come to around £350-400,000. This will be funded through the general Department for Culture, Media and Sport budget.
But I want to go further, and encourage councils around the country to honour Her Majesty with similar projects, and will be making £10,000,000 available for community bids (up to a maximum of £150,000 per bid) in towns, villages and cities around the Country as part of the ‘QEII Culture Fund’. This funding will be secured in the budget as a one-off spend for 2023/24, and we are encouraging communities to dedicate spending towards much-needed community projects, such as renovating village halls or commissioning murals in public spaces.
Councils can apply to the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government for this funding - in collaboration with DCMS - and I look forward to reading each and every application personally myself too
Let us all come together to build an even more lasting legacy for Her Majesty, as we say goodbye and usher in a new era of His Majesty King Charles the Third.
I commend this Statement to the House.
This Statement was written by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, His Grace the Most Honourable Sir Sephronar KG KCT GBE LVO PC MP MSP FRS, the 1st Duke of Hampshire, 1st Marquess of St Ives, 1st Earl of St Erth, 1st Baron of Truro on behalf of His Majesty’s 33rd Government with contributions from His Grace Sir BeppeSignfury PC KP KCT KBE KCVO FRS, Member of Parliament for Northern Ireland, formerly known as the Duke of Redcar and Cleveland.
Debate under this statement will end on Tuesday 6th June 2023 at 10pm BST.

2023.06.03 14:09 DishevelledDeccas The Poverty of Christian Voluntarism
(Pun intended)
*** Effort Post ***
Whenever the topic of socialism or welfare comes up in Christian circles, the notion of Christian voluntarism is quick to follow. What is this Christian voluntarism? It is the idea that national welfare should be based on voluntary charity by the church, not the state. This idea seems to have influence in George Bush’s Compassionate Conservatism, and also to a lesser degree in David Cameron’s Big Society.
Two defenses of the concept are in “The Tragedy of American Compassion” by Marvin Olasky, and “Christian Charity vs Government Welfare” by Thomas Johnson
[1]. In truth, elements of the idea itself has subtlety become accepted by a very many Christians, and is present in general Christian apologetics on economics (see bibliography). It must be noted that the proponents of the idea rarely embrace the term Christian Voluntarism
[2], which seems to be rather a function of how generally accepted and non-sequitur the idea seems to be.
The theology behind Christian Voluntarism Sadly, many of the texts linked do not have a strong theological basis; they are largely historical defenses for the idea (See Olasky 2008 and Johnson 1970). Thus, a strongman of their theology must rely on those aforementioned Christian apologetic sources rather substantially (see bibliography). Also, thanks to
u/Laojac who provided a strongman
here.
Christian voluntarism is fundamentally reliant on the charity practiced by the early Christian Church. We know that people in the church shared their property with each other and cared for each other; Acts 2:44-45, Acts 4:32-37. We know they were commanded to care for their families, alongside the poor, and that there were fundraising efforts to send money over to people in need in the church (1 Tim 5:3,8, Galatians 2:10, Hebrews 13:2-3, 2 Corinthians 8-9). Christian Voluntarism takes this model for charity and attempts to nationalize it is a welfare system, for charity. It uses a few methods to support this.
First, it argues that bible tells us that giving should be voluntary. 2 Corinthians 8-9, and especially 2 Corinthians 9:7, exhort voluntary charity, not done under compulsion. Ergo, the state should not require taxation to fund welfare. Whilst the online tracts do not go much further than this, there is an interesting way that this can be extrapolated further. The particular significance of this verse, interestingly enough, is it is one of the key verses to refute the requirement of tithing. Tithing existed under the wholistic economic system of the old testament that did have many rather radical economic policies; the sabbatical year and the year of jubilee, etc. So to call in this verse against the requirement of taxation does provide a rather big challenge; this new idea of caring in the new testament is not a system of governance, like in the old testament, with taxes and regulations. It is a system guided by the holy spirit, whereby people voluntarily care for those around them. The requirement for people to care for families in 1 timothy 5 would definitely fall into this.
Second, it fundamentally ties welfare to work. To quote 2 Thessalonians 3:10 - “those who do not work shall not eat”. This can be taken in the more obvious sense of “there is no such thing as a free lunch” – people need to work to provide for a living, but for the Christian voluntarists, it is taken as a command of a mutual obligation – those who do not try to work shall not get welfare. (Olasky 2008, p 9-10). Unsurprisingly, this is where ideas of “deserving” and “undeserving poor” come from worthy (Olasky 2008, p 11-12). This also forms what welfare should look like – Welfare has a purpose to help people make a living for themselves (Olasky 2008, p 25, 29). But specifically, in practice it also means that those who don’t want to work should be excluded from welfare (Olasky 2008, p 12, 29, 228). Christian voluntarist tracts argue further that welfare itself is corrupting in that it enables backwardness and degeneracy to exist, encouraging laziness and the breakdown of families (for example, Olasky 2008, p xi -xvii, 222).
Third, supporting this is the argument that Biblical notions of property are explicitly in favor of
Liberal private property. This is the belief that the owner of property, can do whatever they want with their property. This starts with an appeal to Exodus 20:15,17 as examples of OT Justifications for private property. It points to the various points in the bible that recognize private ownership. To reference a few; Genesis 4:4, Micah 4:4, Acts 5:4. A very notable verse is Mathew 20:15; “Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money?” – taking this statement at face value would suggest Jesus is very much in favour of
liberal private property rights. The whole conclusion of this that people have the right to do with their property what they want. The most immediate implication is the government cannot seize property - This is used against the threat of state socialism.
The Problems with this theology Of course, we need to recognize that the Bible doesn’t tell Christians to take over the state and implement a welfare state. The fact is that the bible doesn’t prescribe a structure for economic justice in the broader national community. But similarly, this means the bible doesn’t prescribe the Church as being the welfare system of the broader national community. There is a legitimate question about how to pursuing economic justice in light of biblical commands and examples, and the description of the New Testament church (Acts 2:42-47, Acts 4:34-35) exists to show us what economic justice should look like in Christian communities specifically. However, it is a significant stretch to argue that this decentralised system of churches providing welfare is what the bible prescribes as the only legitimate national welfare system.
NT Christian communities were not set up to be a welfare system for the Roman state. They were examples of model Christian communities that we can look to guide us in holy living. They did exist as an alternate perception of economic justice to Old Testament Israel’s state-embedded system, certainly. However, this alternative state was for a few reasons; First Old Testament Israel was a sacrificial system, one that was no longer needed after Christ’s death and resurrection (Heb 10:1-18). Second, Old Testament Israel was a theocratic state, that would make a people for God who would be outwardly different from all around them (Deut 28:9-10). However, Christ did not come to establish a kingdom of this world (John 18:36), instead a people who would follow him due to their changed heart (John 18:36, John 3:5-8). The nullification of the theocratic state of Israel was not a rejection of the state’s interference in economic policy. Rather, it was a recognition that the theocratic state had fulfilled its soteriological and eschatological purpose.
With this context out of the way, we can refute the specific justifications of the voluntarists; The first, 2 Corinthians 9:7, which tells us that giving should be voluntary, not under compulsion, was in a specific letter given to a specific community responding to a crisis at the time. To transform it into a condemnation of state taxation for welfare is a substantial stretch. Paul made clear that it was also a test; he would not command this church to give charity but wanted to know the sincerity of their love, by comparing how much they gave compared to other churches (2 Corinthians 8:8-9).
He was not laying down a law about the state. Nothing in the passage suggests that the state cannot provide welfare. Nothing in the passage suggests that the state cannot demand taxation. Indeed, bible does not reject compulsion in terms of taxation as Christians are exhorted to pay their taxes (Mark 12:13-17; Rom 13:6-7). Contextually, the Christian Voluntarist must also grapple with the absence of a condemnation of the grain dole of Rome, both within this passage and within the broader New Testament. Now, one could argue that if the state gets involved in welfare then the sincerity of Christian love has failed – but that is a very different argument, an argument that needs to grapple with both the fallen nature of humanity, and the social implications of democracy. Nevertheless, the passage at hand does not refute state taxation or state provision of welfare.
Moving to the second justification – that, welfare should be tied to work. This specific passage, 2 Thessalonians 3:10, occurs within a context where there are believers who are “idle and disruptive” (v 6, 11) and who are “not busy; they are busybodies”. They are commanded to settle down and eat (v 12). To use this passage to encourage Christians to work is good. It is not the purpose of the passage to be used for a model of how a welfare state works. Unlike 2 Cor 9:7, which is deliberately misused by Christians to deny welfare to others – this passage can be used to form a welfare state system. Like Acts 4:32 for the Socialists, and 1 Corinthians 14:12-26 for the Corporatists, 2 Thessalonians 3:10 seems quite able to be derived to justify a political policy. However, to declare that 2 Thessalonians 3:10 necessitates a policy program on welfare is misguided – it was a teaching for a particular church at a particular time. The practical considerations of this particular section will get further treatment further on.
The final argument that the bible prescribes liberal private property. This argument has lies that it conceals in truths. Fundamentally, the bible does recognize property rights. It recognizes that we can own property and have liberty in using that property. However, the bible also recognizes two other things; First, that we are not the absolute owners of that property. God is the absolute owner of everything, not humanity (1 Cor 10:26; Psalm 24:1; Deut 10:14). The second is that any property we have, we steward for God; we are not allowed to use property for whatever purpose we deem fit. The OT system has a variety of restrictions on how we can use property, much of which existed for economic justice. There were prohibitions on taking interest (Leviticus 26:36-37); Gleaning laws that mean restricted the amount of produce farmers could get from their own harvest, requiring they leave some to the poor (Lev 19:9-10; Deut 24:19-21). Furthermore, there are the radical redistribution policies with the Sabbatical year and year of jubilee (Leviticus 25:1-7, 8-55). The commandment to not steal was situated within these verses about responsibilities, something noted by Both Catholics and Reformed Christians (See the Catholic Catechism, Westminster Larger Catechism and Heidelberg Catechism). The New Testament similar has a variety of commands about how to use property; (Luke 6:30, 1 John 3:17, 1 Tim 5:8, 6:17-18).
There is one verse that falls outside of the above explanation; Mathew 20:15 – “Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money?”. The context of the verse is that Jesus is teaching a parable. In the parable, the vineyard owner pays all his workers the same amount, no matter what they work. Parables have single purposes – the purpose of this parable is that it doesn’t matter however late you sign up to the gospel, you will still be saved. It is not a parable with prescriptions on wage payments. It is not a parable with prescriptions on private property.
Fundamentally, there is no biblical prescription against the state establishment of a welfare state. This, in itself, does not disqualify Christian voluntarism as an idea; rather it means that advocating Christian voluntarism requires making a different argument – that the Christian voluntarist form of welfare is the best form of welfare.
The Economics of a Christian Voluntarist welfare state Gøsta Esping-Andersen’s seminal work “The Three Worlds of welfare Capitalism”, divides welfare states into three ideal types; “Liberal”, “Conservative” and “Social Democratic”. Of these, Christian Voluntarism is closest to the “Liberal” ideal type which is found in the US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. A liberal welfare state is one that aims to encourage the pursuit of employment, and so the state will provide as little as possible (Esping-Andersen 1990, p. 42). Means testing and mutual obligation is often used to minimize the states ways to welfare provision. Those who cannot rely on government support must rely on charity (Esping-Andersen 1990, p. 26-27).
Christian Voluntarism is essentially a Christian defense for the “Liberal” welfare state. However it does far more, because in practice it would mean the undermining of the liberal welfare state. The Christian voluntarist would tear down the last vestiges of a state led system so that people instead rely on Charity. They would attempt to further liberalize an already liberal system. The practical implications of this are that even a state led system that incorporates the principles of the “deserving and undeserving” poor, alongside the mutual obligations of “those who don’t work don’t eat”, are too much for the Christian Voluntarist.
This system fails both quantitatively and qualitatively. It fails quantitatively because a welfare state based on charity cannot support the entire population. Welfare encompasses old age, unemployment, workplace injuries, permanent disabilities and more. The amount of money needed to organise such a welfare system is unachievable by charities (Green 2017). Reviews of “The Tragedy of American compassion” point out that the historical charitable system championed did not provide welfare for all – it was very geographically dependent (Hammack, 1996, p 261-262).
This system also fails qualitatively. One would think that a Christian voluntarist would see that charity and welfare are symptoms of economic greater problems, and addressing those greater problems would reduce the burdens on charity.
[3] But Christian Voluntarists don’t address the issues which lead people to need charity. Unaffordable healthcare and involuntary unemployment are two clear examples of structural economic problems; the former due to the various oligopolies that exist throughout the healthcare system, which is unsurprising given it is a market with high start-up costs, and the latter often due a deficiency in demand. The solutions to these factors require substantial economic reform by means of regulation and government spending, which is antithetical to the Christian Voluntarist ideal. Christian voluntarists are not advocating for these solutions to reduce the burden on charities.
Two further addendums need to be added to this analysis. The first is that there are flaws with regards to the policy derivatives of 2 Thessalonians 3:10. The idea of an undeserving poor has lead to many problems – for example this group has historically included beggars and criminals (Schmalz 2017). The definition of who is undeserving will inevitably both include and exclude people who may need help. Olasky, for example, includes Alcoholics and Drug Addicts as part of his ‘undeserving poor’ (p. 227-228), when, in truth, these groups could quite easily be seen as the most needing of support – albeit in a more compressive form then mere cash handout. The principle of mutual obligations behind this need to be thought through. Interestingly enough, the gleaning system in the OT seems to be a system that follows this idea; welfare is there, but people have to work to get it. This principles behind this are also evident in a full employment policy in the modern era. However, today’s governments generally prefer of “mutual obligations” for welfare, or forms of workfare instead. In the context where workers outnumber jobs these programs essentially act as punitive “full employment policy”.
The second is the Christian voluntarist claim that any welfare system should be orientated towards public morality alongside economic justice. This is a fair claim, and frankly welfare systems must be cautiously constructed with consideration of economic justice, and also the moral fabric of society. Here the example of the ideal type of the Conservative welfare state (historically found in found in Germany, Belgium and Austria), can be drawn upon. This welfare state, for example, is constructed with the family in mind (Esping-Andersen 1990, p. 27). It also relies largely on decentralised system of welfare provision that incorporate religious providers (Esping-Andersen 1990, p. 27). Even with the focus on the moral fabric of society, other factors must also come into play; The conservative welfare state benefits married couples over singles; what does this mean for the economic situation of single mothers? Such a welfare system needs to counterbalance the social fabric of society with it’s economic needs.
To Conclude Theologically, the claims of Christian Voluntarism do not stand up; there is not set biblical principle about the state’s involvement in welfare provision. Economically, the Christian Voluntarists fail to appreciate the quantitative size of charitable provision needed to match the welfare state, nor do they deal with the structural issues facing the economy.
Fundamentally, I am not a Christian Socialist. I do not believe that the descriptions of Christian communities in Acts can be described as socialist – I may write another piece like this later on. I’m not coming from a liberal, modernist or progressive Christian perspective. Rather I’m annoyed that Conservative Christians have accepted the claims of liberal economies and tried to make a more liberalized welfare system based on a misguided claim about following the Bible.
[1] The specific defense provided by Johnson is explicitly voluntarist, in that it draws on voluntarism as a philosophy. It is also Pelagian and so should be rejected; “Any Christian who does not openly and vehemently denounce all forms of government welfare, cannot, in truth, call himself a Christian, for government welfare is the antithesis of Christian charity.” - this is clearly heresy.
[2] Indeed, the term only seems to appear in online Christian Forums. However, Academics do describe this idea as voluntarist, and it is a Christian defense of Voluntarism, so terming the idea “Christian Voluntarism” is apt.
[3] This was the approach of the founder of the St Vincent De Paul society, Frederic Ozanam. He was an economics lecturer and argued that charity was insufficient to change the situation – what was needed was a change to the relationship between workers and capital (Moody 1953, p 129).
