2023.06.05 12:48 KeyCarpenter7303 Progression is super satisfying
For me personally, they nailed this aspect of the game.
I'm only about to enter WT4 (hopefully) so I don't know if this feeling will be kept up, but at the moment I can feel my character improving in tangible ways basically by the hour.
I'm playing a frozen orb sorc (not a meta build from what I know), so that may play into it, but I just want to describe my journey through the story a bit, and why progression actually feels so good to me. Sorry for the novel, but I felt like it was important to be detailed:
- You start the game of with barely any resource generation and no +maximum mana so you can't actually use it frozen orb that much. To top it off, it is hard to aim and does only half its damage when you misfire or enemies are too close. I started feeling fairly weak compared to some of the OP experiences I had in beta, but the combat was satisfying so I didn't mind.
- Over the first couple of levels after unlocking frozen orb, you add some essentialy abilities and passives: It becomes easier to chill and freeze enemies, enabling more opportunities to fire frozen orb properly. You unlock enchantments, meaning I could directly trigger frozen orb with other skills and see a huge damage jump right there.
- At some point mid campaign I found some items that apparently gave me some giga DPS boost. I found a big vulnerability multiplier on a 2H staff and rings, as well as a couple of items with damage to slowed and CCed enemies. I actually kept these for a long time because they were hard to roll. I remember only replacing some item power ~200 items when I started to find sacred items.
- I added more stuff that made a significant difference from the skill tree. I went with ice blades (not to be confused with ice shards), still don't know if that's a good combo with frozen orb but it made a big improvement. At this point, I basically added some more buttons to press that trigger more frozen orbs, I could see that vulnerability uptime on elites was significantly higher, and my defense took a big bump because you can rotate barriers with all those cooldowns using some skill tree passives.
- I think at this point I added some gloves and helmet that gave +1 to frozen orb and +1 to ice blades (respectively). It seems like a small thing but it made a noticeable bump in my damage. I think it scales the base damage of the skills so it's like a separate multiplier.
- From time to time since I was quite undereleveled for story progress (I remember getting into ilvl 45 story areas at level 35 or something) I would add some generic but good looking generic aspects from dungeons to my build. Since they were generic and the dungeon aspects have min rolls, the impact on my DPS wasn't huge but it allowed me to keep up and it certainly never felt like my build was going backwards because of level scaling during the story like some people are describing.
- I noticed that just because of how combat goes I was walking around a lot and not actually casting frozen orbs (like sometimes you can cast it, but you know it will not do good damage because you are not positioned properly. Or you need to dodge stuff etc.). On some occassions this led me to overcap mana leading to wasted efficiency. At this point I specced some points into max mana on the skill tree and got a helmet with a big +mana affix in addition to +ice blades. This seems like a pretty small change but it actually had quite a big impact on how good the build felt. Because now you would sometimes freeze elites to be in proper position, use the other abilities and be back at full mana after that, and then blast like 10+ frozen orbs in a row because of the combination of max mana + mana regen + 10% free proc from passives.
- I think somewhere around act 5 or near the end I found a legendary that made my key passive (that gives you 10% chance to get a free cast of frozen orb) basically trigger twice. So you get two free casts instead of one when it procs. Now this was an amazing addition in terms of how the build feels and this is why, valid criticisms notwithstanding, I love powerful legendary affixes like this. Basically you get lucky sometimes in combat and then get to totally pew pew pew for a few seconds because your mana keeps regenerating while you are casting those free frozen orbs. I think this probably bumped my DPS by a significant but not huge amount (maybe 5-10%?), but its impact on game feel was just tremendous.
- I got a random drop for a legendary that increases my CC duration by 80% while I'm healthy. It seems like only a situational change that isn't all that useful in a lot of scenarios but it actually felt amazing when I tried it out in practice. When elites get frozen they stay frozen SO LONG. I would now sometimes have some random added moment where I could delete some frozen elites where previously there would be an added cycle of running or teleporting away and going through another round of frozen orbs.
- In addition to all of this, I always noticed a big bump when I sometimes find good upgrades for my main weapon. This would take a while because I couldn't go for something that has +10 DPS because if the stats it actually rolled were too bad. I'm not losing a 25% vulnerability damage multiplier just because the weapon is goes from 500 to 510 DPS.
- Overall there were a few smaller moments that felt quite impactful for progression, but I would go on forever if I listed them all here. For example at the end of the story I got this unique that refunded half my frozen orb mana cost if it hits 5 or more enemies. Not useful for all scenarios but quite impactful for game feel and DPS output yet again, and so on.
I'm cutting it off here instead of describing progression to WT3 and then through WT3 because the post would get twice as long, but you get the picture. The paragon board adds a lot with regards to plugging obvious numeric holes in your build (for me this was crit related stuff and main stat) so there's an obvious power progression there. I feel like some item slots are indeed a bit boring (chest?) but it might just be that I'm not interested in scaling defensives as I am in scaling offensives. Maybe that will change once I inevitably try HC. However besides weapons I still look forward to checking helmets, gloves and amulets in particular. There are some giga rolls possible with these that I know but they are very hard to roll. Ami with +all skills, mana cost reduction, %int and damage or something? yes please
Overall I just wanted to present this as a counterpoint to the other post on the front page. Their criticism is probably legitimate but I just wanted to make sure Blizzard doesn't get the wrong impression and thinks that everyone feels like this.

This is not the Buzz Lightyear you know and love—the one who is best friends with Woody and voiced by Tim Allen. This is the original Buzz Lightyear, a bonafide space ranger voiced by Chris Evans, who is stranded on a hostile planet that is 4.2 million lightyears from Earth, alongside his commander and crew. The Lightyear cast also includes the voices of Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, Uzo Aduba, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

2023.06.05 12:18 Gyramuur Trouble with GGML performance on a fresh install of Oobabooga
Hi! So I'm having a bit of a problem with trying to run local 13B models. I have 32 GB of RAM, an RTX 3070 with 8 GB of VRAM, and an AMD Ryzen 7 3800 (8 cores at 3.9 GHz).
Since I do not have enough VRAM to run a 13B model, I'm using GGML with GPU offloading using the -n-gpu-layers command. Recently I went through a bit of a setup where I updated Oobabooga and in doing so had to re-enable GPU acceleration by reinstalling llama-cpp-python, over on this page:
https://github.com/oobabooga/text-generation-webui/blob/main/docs/llama.cpp-models.md#gpu-acceleration
Now, I was also getting an error with bitsandbytes saying it was installed without GPU support, however Oobabooga still said the GPU offloading was working. I had set n-gpu-layers to 25 and had about 6 GB in VRAM being used.
With this setup, with GPU offloading working and bitsandbytes complaining it wasn't installed right, I was getting a slow but fairly consistent ~2 tokens per second. I also decided to do something about the bitsandbytes error, and I found this issue on github where a solution (using pip to install torch-2.0) was posted:
https://github.com/oobabooga/text-generation-webui/issues/1969
I followed the given solution and the bitsandbytes error was gone. Great! Except...now performance inside of Oobabooga is basically tanked. Outputs tend to be between 0.3 and 0.4 tokens a second, and on top of that, it takes up to a full minute or more before the replies even start generating. If I'm regenerating a response, then it's able to respond right away and goes at the ~2 tokens per second. However, as soon as I type something new and hit generate, the speed drops again and it sits there saying "is typing" forever.
So, I'm wondering if I went wrong somewhere along the line, or if one of my settings is messed up. I'm using all default settings, aside from using 25 GPU layers, and the model I'm using is the 5_1 bit GGML version of Guanaco 13B. This is all happening on a fresh install, and I even tried to do a separate fresh install last night, but it's not fixing the problem and I'm stuck with the slow speed and response times.
Any help is appreciated. :)

2023.06.05 12:07 BodybuilderAnxious19 WoW Balancing: Fixes
- Tone Down Trinket Bonus: As it stands, all DPS classes are currently benefitting from a 25% trinket bonus. This needs to be cut down to a more balanced 20%.
- Boost Healers’ MMR: Looking at the stats, the top DPS in SS currently holds an MMR of 2466, while the top healer is lagging behind at 2367. This needs to be reversed - we should make it more achievable for healers to rack up higher ratings compared to DPS, possibly encouraging more players to take on the healer role.
- Balance All Healers: At present, the MW Monk is hogging the limelight in high ratings, making up 50% of all healers. This video 7 even states that without a MW Monk, you’re pretty much out of luck in solo shuffle. To combat this, all healers should be balanced to the same competitive level as the MW Monk.
- Scrap the MMR Cap: The current MMR cap in WoW simply isn’t working. Instead, we should look to DOTA 2’s recent MMR system and tailor it to WoW’s needs. Key features of DOTA 2’s system include:
- MATCHMAKING WITH CONFIDENCE: MMR is composed of two elements - Rank and Rank Confidence. Your Rank reflects our estimate of your skill, and Rank Confidence is how certain we are of this estimate. These values are adjusted based on your match performance.
- UNDESIRED CLUMPING: DOTA has traditionally used a modified Elo algorithm for these adjustments, but this has led to problems such as an undesirable clumping in the 0-1000 MMR range, and difficulty for returning players to regain an accurate MMR.
- NEW AND IMPROVED CLUMPING: To rectify this, a new algorithm called Glicko is being adopted. This algorithm allows for quick and accurate matching of similar skill levels and more accurately factors Rank Confidence into MMR adjustments.
Incentivize Participation with a PvP Trading Post: To maintain player interest, a PvP equivalent of The Trading Post could be introduced, where players can exchange Rating for elite versions of PvP sets from old expansions, elite enchants, mounts, and recolored versions of old gladiator mounts. To unlock these items, players need to maintain a high rating and play a certain number of games in the current PvP Trading Post month.
I want to explain my ideas a bit more detailed:
- Access to Recolored Gladiator Mounts: If you’re set on a recolored version of an old gladiator mount, you’ve got to put in the work. To get one, you’ll need to hit a 2400 rating in the current PvP Trading Post and play at least 50 games above that rating, similar to the criteria for a typical gladiator.
- Purchase with PvP Rating: Here’s a twist – what if we could buy all these flashy cosmetics with PvP Rating? Imagine you’re sitting on a 2400 CR and you’ve got your sights set on a recolored TBC Glad, but you’re also hankering for the S3 Legion Elite. To snag both, you’ll have to play more games to earn more CR. The good news is, your MMR won’t be affected, so there’s no risk of a drastic drop(by this I mean you wont play against lower tier players since your games will be based just on MMR). However, to keep things fair, we’d cap the CR gains at a maximum of 30 CR per win(this forces ladder activity). And if you lose, you’ll either stay steady or lose just a smidge, until your MMR aligns with your CR.
- Season End Protocol: Let’s shake things up a bit near the end of the season. About a month, or maybe 1.5 months, before the season wraps up, we’ll disable the trading post. This would let the top players duke it out for R1 and accelerate the pace of climbing CR to match your MMR level.
Here’s how the new system will work:
- Initial Calibration: Players will be put into a brief calibration phase, initially seeded by their previous rank. Unlike before, the calibration phase won’t be tied to a fixed number of matches. Instead, a player is considered calibrated when their Rank Confidence exceeds a specific threshold.
- Variable MMR Gain/Loss: Matches will no longer provide fixed MMR gains or losses. Instead, these values will fluctuate based on several factors, such as the Ranks and Rank Confidence of the participants. To avoid extreme outcomes, we will cap the gain/loss per match.
- Rank Confidence Deterioration: If a player doesn’t engage in matches for a certain period, their Rank Confidence will slowly decrease. This change ensures that skill evaluations remain current and that players who return from a break won’t struggle with inflated or outdated MMR values.
These changes aim to provide a smoother and more representative matchmaking experience, particularly for players returning from breaks(this will also fix the issue we have with people who achieved 3k rating in SL S2 compared to people who achieved 3k in DF S1(its just an example)). The Glicko algorithm, with its focus on Rank Confidence, should allow a more accurate and dynamic response to shifts in player skill levels.

2023.06.05 12:03 ConflictMassive1436 I dont feel okay with my own body
I didnt really know where to put this so here's the best place i got.... Basically as the title suggests I really just do not feel secure in my own body anymore. I used to be the opposite of that though. I used to truly accept how i look and not ever be ashamed about anything about me. It also helped that i used to have a gorgeous gf. Long story short shes doing not okay things behind my back. That just made me feel not good enough to be in a relationship. Then to put the cherry on top. Right as i started to work the courage to maybe put myself back out there. The girl I was really hoping to ask if she would like to go to the movies or out to dinner sometimes. Well she drops the im not a big fan of short guys..(Cue internal screaming on my end, also she had no idea i was going to ask her on a date either we were talking about relationships) now to premise im average height 5'7" nothing special. But this girls taller than me by at least 3 or 4 inches . There was just something about just that last time of hearing someone say that. That just made me begin hating myself entirely. Im so mad i cant be taller, cant be more attractive, i cant have the body that people want or the attributes that people want with it. But i NEVER want someone to lower there standards of what they want in there life to give me a chance. So i guess i just feel helpless and just angry about everything about me. At this point I didnt know what to do so i came here. Sorry for this random mess of words but i needed to vent my frustrations against myself out in someway

Memory transcription subject: Lemva, Venlil Archeologist
Date [standardized human time]: July 13, 2165
The attendant, Harold, had told me that there would be another passenger boarding shortly several minutes ago, and since then I couldn't keep still wondering who I was going to meet.As I sat on the couch, I couldn’t help but eavesdrop on the conversation that Harold had just started with the other passenger. As I heard a new voice respond to Harold’s greeting my heart started beating faster. Wait, the voice sounded familiar…
My heart rate quickened as footsteps came closer down the hallway.A man wearing a black suit and indigo tie came walking around the corner and my heart fluttered a little as I looked up at his face.
“Lemva?”
“James?” I squeaked as I said his name. I jumped up off the couch and ran toward him, throwing my arms around him and nearly knocking him over. “Lemva!”
Looking up at him, I realized what I had just done, backing off slightly embarrassed. “James! I haven’t seen you in so long, what have you been up to?”
“Looking into ancient history, studying declassified documents, bringing back ancient history, that sorta thing.” James kneeled slightly and looked at me with a wide smile, I’d missed that smile so much. He opened his mouth to speak. “I wasn’t expecting to see you on this flight. It’s very good to see you!” “It’s good to see you too! So you’re one of the others that the UN’s invitation spoke of.” “It seems that way, yeah.” He chuckled slightly.
“I see you two are getting along well! I don’t even have to introduce you.” I realized Harold had been standing there watching the interaction the whole time. I straightened myself out, even more embarrassed than before. Harold chuckled. “Alright you two, we’re going to be taking off shortly. I’ll be in the cabin along with the captain. If you need me, press these buttons.” He handed us both a device with a singular blue button labeled “call”.
The man turned around and headed through the door leading to the cockpit. Leaving us alone. We both sat on a couch. James spoke, “So, do you know anything about the job being offered?” “I was going to ask you the same thing.” “Hmm, well we’re going to be in for a long flight, may as well catch up on some things.”
Me and James had known each other since we attended MIK, and had a lot of history. We met in the college’s history club, and quickly became friends. We both had a passion for learning about things that most others had forgotten, and theorizing about what life was like in ancient times. He didn’t know it but I had a huge crush on him at the time.
We stayed in contact long after we both got our doctorates, despite the large distances between us. Eventually James suddenly stopped contacting me, I never understood why. I had worried that it was something I did, that I had pushed him away. Then, after a while, he faded from memory, only existing in the back of my mind. I needed to know why. But not now, this was too soon.
“I know I already asked what you’ve been up to since we last spoke, but still. Discovered anything new?”
“Yeah, I got my hands on some recently declassified Fed info and artifacts around 8 months back. Studied them and found out they were ancient Gojid pottery, inscriptions described some sort of fertility god? Found some other inscriptions describing the site of an ancient Gojid city on The Cradle and got in contact with a dig team to go search there. Hit the motherlode and-” He spoke so enthusiastically about his findings. Just seeing him so happy about his work made me bloom, but thankfully he didn’t notice as he kept talking, waving his hands to emphasize his words. “-trying to find a museum that has the room for all of them.”
“Wow, that’s a lot more than what I’ve been doing.” “Really? Lemva hasn’t done anything interesting lately? I find that hard to believe.” James took on an amused expression. “Yes, really. I’ve been on vacation with my family for a little while, that’s all. It had been a while since I’d seen them.”
I could see his smile visibly lessen, he shifted his eyes, seeming to be deep in thought. Had I said something wrong? “Hey, are you okay?” I asked. “Yeah, I’m fine. Your mention of family brought back some… memories.” A singular tear formed below his left eye, before he looked away. I didn’t want to push, despite his failed attempt at hiding his sadness. “Oh, we can change the subject if you want.”
He wiped his eyes and shuddered, before straightening himself out. “No, it’s ok. You should probably know anyway. It’s part of the reason I haven’t talked to you in so long.” I was hoping to get some answers but now I didn’t know if I wanted to if it was making him this upset.
“A- alright, go ahead. You can stop at any time if you want to.” “Before I start I want to say how sorry I am for ghosting you.” He closed his eyes, inhaling and exhaling deeply. A somber expression filled his face as he opened his eyes. “Okay. You know my parents right? Bill and Angene?” “Yeah?” “A couple years back, I was doing a small job for a little town on Nishtal. Not much pay but that didn’t matter. This was during the time when the anti-human movement was in full effect.”
My heart stopped, I immediately knew where this was going.
“I wasn’t worried for them cause they were on Earth. I thought they would be away from the violence because the rioters would be too scared to be among so many ‘predators.’” His voice dripped with malice as he spat out the last word. He was always treated… differently from other people. Even so long after the war, “predator” hate was still common. He kept speaking. “Clearly I was wrong, or maybe one of those fucking rioters hated us too much to care about their own safety.” I only now noticed that he had been shaking as he spoke, but he suddenly stopped. He looked defeated, on the verge of a breakdown. “They were just bringing home groceries, that’s all. They were friendly and happy and polite and all they were doing was bringing home some things for dinner. But because they had committed the
SIN of being born with forward facing eyes everyone hated them.” “On the phone the next day, I was told that my parents had been stabbed to death when walking home. I had to attend their funeral several days later, and that night the police took me in to meet their murderer. It took every ounce of energy that I could muster to not turn their disgusting little face to orange mulch.”
If anyone else had looked at James’ face at that moment, they would have seen nothing but a rabid animal looking for something to rip apart, but I didn’t see that. I saw a man that just wanted his parents back, a man that wished the world didn’t hate him. James crumpled over and started sobbing violently, and without thinking I got up and gave him the biggest hug my small arms could allow. He wrapped his muscular arms around me and buried his head into my wool, his sobs shaking my whole body. I stroked the back of his head in an attempt to comfort him, and tried doing those shushing sounds that human mothers do to calm down their children but ended up making a strange sputtering sound instead. I heard the sounds of giggling interspersed with the sobbing, leading into a fit of coughing from James. He lifted his face from my shoulder and stared into my eyes, still dripping tears but starting to smile now. He rested his chin back on my shoulder, and I gladly let him.
“I’ve missed you Lemva, you have no idea just how much I’ve missed you. I’m so sorry I left so quickly, I’m so sorry.” “I’ve missed you too James, and you don’t need to apologize, I understand. Why don’t we go drink some water and get some sleep, okay?” The man on my shoulder croaked out a hoarse “Okay” before slowly pulling himself off of me. We both got up and walked into the kitchen to grab some water. James chugged down several glasses before he was satisfied. We made our way to our separate bedrooms before saying goodnight to each other and closing our doors. I pulled the warm blankets over myself and laid my head down, exhausted from the short but intense emotional interaction. As thoughts floated through my mind, I drifted off into a deep sleep.
<<>>
I awoke to a familiar sensation, it felt as if I was standing in a shallow pool of oil. My eyes were met with black for as far as the eye could see, a seemingly endless floor of tar, and a distant orb of light. This sight had become less eerie and more frustrating the more times I had seen it. [Not this again…] I had been having this dream nearly every night for the past 3 weeks, ever since I had received the invitation from the UN. It was always the same. Endless void, endless black oil, a light always seeming within reach but always too far to catch. I decided to play along with the dream and walk towards the light, the faster I go through with this charade the faster I can wake up and talk to James again. My footsteps echoed into infinity as I waded through the sticky oil, the sensation was awful. I stopped and thought for a moment. [Know what? Fuck it, might as well do something different this time.] I turned around and walked away from the orb of light that had been taunting me for 3 weeks straight. As I walked, I could feel the texture beneath my paws slowly change. I looked down to notice that the tar floor I had grown accustomed to was now an endless field of silver sand. My paws were still sticky from the tar and were now covered with sand, great. As I stared down at the ground beneath me, it slowly started glowing brighter and brighter until it hurt my eyes. It was reflecting something.
I looked up to try to find the source of the light and stared in shock at the sight before me, despite the pain in my eyes. I could not turn away. [By the creator…]
Filling the darkness above me was a white dwarf, its brilliance seeming to burn away the darkness surrounding it. Burning streams of plasma buffeted sand in the distance, leaving only glass. I could feel it watching me, judging me. The air around me swirled and roared, picking up fragments of glass and flinging it against my face as I stood in awe. Clouds of silver shards swirled forever around me, scraping away my wool and flesh but I did not move. I could not turn away. The star seemed to fall toward me. I could not turn away. Instantly, the fury of the wind around me calmed, dropping mountains of the glittering sand onto the ground. The sands whispered to me, filling my mind with a single message.
“Find us. We await.”

Date [standardized human time]: July 15, 2165
I stood alongside James near the airlock, we were finally here. It had been two days since I and James had boarded the ship, and we were finally on an approach to Aafa’s spaceport. I felt excited theorizing what job the UN had for us, but couldn’t help but notice a feeling of dread in the back of my mind. Aafa was the capital of the Federation before the UN Coalition began their occupation, and as a result there would probably be more xenophobia on the streets. Hopefully we wouldn’t have to stick around long enough to see it.
“Attention passengers, we are now breaking through the atmosphere, brace yourself on a nearby hand-rail or other stationary object until further notice.”
Me and James grasped the hand-rails tightly as the ship jostled through the turbulent atmosphere, the surface outside the airlock view-port slowly grew larger and larger as we descended. A beautiful city came into view as the clouds’ obfuscation subsided. I had been to Aafa twice in my life before and every time I saw its grand cities I felt a sense of wonder. I could feel the ship level out and slow down, we were almost docked. I felt a small jolt as the landing gear gently touched down on the landing pad.
Harold’s voice came through the PA system. “Alright you two, we’ve landed. I’ll be with you shortly to show you to your escort group.” James and I looked at eachother, I could see a glint of worry in his eyes. Though whether he was worried about the reactions of Aafa’s inhabitants or worried about his first impressions with such important UN personnel, I could not tell.
I heard the cabin door open far behind us and heard Harold’s footsteps make their way toward the airlock where we stood in wait. He stepped past us and took a position at the airlock door.“Welcome to Aafa.” Harold pressed a button and the blast-door slid open with a pneumatic hiss. “Follow me.” We walked down the ramp and onto the hangar bay floor. As my eyes wandered around the large room I noticed how much better kept this spaceport, or at least this hangar, was than the port on Venlil Prime or Earth. Harold took us through a door and into the main hall for this level.
As we made our way to the nearest elevator a kolshian man walked toward us, his gait taking on a menacing feel as he drew closer. When he saw me he smirked. “You sure you wanna keep walking with these predators, little lady? You’d be a lot safer with me instead of
them.” I was astounded by how blatant this man was with his opinions. I tried to respond calmly to the man but couldn’t hide my offense. “No thank you, I’m perfectly fine walking with these “predators”
thank you. Speak your xenophobia to someone who cares to listen.” The kolshian’s smirk disappeared as he walked toward me faster. Harold’s arm shot out in front of me, blocking the man from getting any closer, the chipper smile he usually displayed was gone from his face. “Please leave sir, we have things to attend to.” The kolshian’s angry expression intensified. “I’m not taking orders from any damn
predator.” I could see the man pulling out an object from behind his back. Before I could react, I heard a sickening crunch as Harold’s fist connected with the kolshian’s face, and the man tumbled to the ground. I heard a sound as the knife we were about to be stabbed with clattered to the ground, the tentacle he had been using to wield it clutching his bleeding face. Harold in a swift motion kicked away the knife and put the kolshian in a choke hold while a group of UN security officers rushed over. Two officers cuffed the bleeding kolshian and another walked up to Harold most likely to ask for an explanation.
Harold put back on his usual cheerful expression as he turned to speak to us.“You two head down to the first floor, your escort group and the other 2 invitees will be waiting in the main lobby, they should be pretty obvious to spot. I’ll catch up soon but I have to explain the situation with security.” I turned to look at James as we hurried to the elevator. I could tell he was angry, but he had a glint of satisfaction in his eyes, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel a little similar. James scrolled down the list of floors on the screen and selected the number 1. The Aafa spaceport was easily the largest structure I had ever seen, I guess there wasn’t enough room for 400 buttons. As the elevator descended, James spoke.
“Hey Lem, you ok?” “Yeah, my heart’s beating pretty fast though. Who knows what would have happened if Harold wasn’t with us.” “Yeah, did you see how fast he handled that? Guy must be a veteran or something.” The idea brought a question to the surface of my mind that I had been pondering since I first received my invitation. “Yeah… I’ve been wondering why we’ve been treated so well ever since we got aboard the ship. I mean, we’re just a couple historians, why spend so much on the ship and all the protection? What could this job possibly be?” As I spoke, James stared past the transparent wall of the elevator and into the city skyline, he seemed to be deep in thought. “Yeah I’ve been thinking about that too… I don’t think we’ll have to theorize for much longer though, just a short drive and we can ask whoever invited us.”
My attention was brought back to reality as a
DING sounded from the doorway, indicating that we were at the ground floor. The doors slid open silently and revealed a veritable swarm of people walking through the main hallway loop, several people of different species squeezed into the elevator we were just in as we walked out. James and I followed the signage on the walls for several minutes and entered into the main lobby, where we could see a group of humans with a Gojid in the middle. The humans wore black suits and sunglasses, I could also barely make out earpieces and microphones hidden among their clothing. They reminded me of the secret agents in the human spy movies I enjoyed watching. They must be our escort group.
We approached the menacing humans and they turned to look at us. Before I could speak up I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see Harold catching up with us. “Sorry for leaving you alone for a bit. I’ll talk with your escorts.” Harold walked up to the closest escort and flashed a badge at them, turning around once the mysterious man nodded. The escort spoke something into his earpiece but I couldn’t quite make it out. “Well, I’d best be going to sort out matters with the captain. I’ll meet up with you later.” Harold handed us off to the mysterious entourage and walked back into the crowd.
One of the bodyguards spoke up. “Follow me and don’t stray off course, we’ll be taking you to the senate building.” As our guards escorted us to our vehicle, I spoke to the gojid accompanying us. “Hi, my name is Lemva, this is James. Are you one of the other people invited by the UN?” The gojid spoke up in a soft voice. “Yeah, though for what reason I do not know why. My name is Cayek by the way, nice to meet you. Do you mind if we get some introductions out of the way before we arrive at the senate building?” James responded first and stretched out his arm for a handshake. It took a second for Cayek to reciprocate. “Sure! As Lemva told you, my name is James. I was born on Earth and currently live on Venlil Prime. I’m a historian and got my doctorate at MIK, where I met Lemva. We’ve known each other quite a while. I like coffee and hate the ocean.” “Oh cool, I attended there too! Got my doctorate in linguistics. When did you attend?” “Sent in an application in 2140, as soon as it opened. Got accepted around a month later.” “Nice, that was around when I joined too. We must not have crossed paths often. Though your face does seem vaguely familiar.” Cayek looked at me and I began speaking. “My name’s Lemva, though I already said that. I attended MIK with James. Went there to get a doctorate in archeology. Was born on Venlil Prime and I’ve moved too many times to count, but my latest home is on Earth.”
I noticed that we had reached our ride. Our vehicle was a black limousine, it looked slightly larger than others I had seen, perhaps it was armored? One of the guards escorting us, who I could only assume was the one in charge, opened the side door and we all crawled inside. Cayek, James, and I settled in our seats and the guard closed our doors before entering through a door closer to the front to sit facing us. The guard sat unnaturally still, staring directly at us as the vehicle drew out of the underground parking area, making me feel uneasy. I looked over at James and Cayek, they seemed just as uncomfortable as I. The ride to the Senate building was silent.
I watched the buildings glide past us as we drove down Main, toward the Capitol. The large dome shaped building grew larger as we crept closer. Nervousness invaded my mind as I wondered what the task we had been chosen for was. Why did the UN spend so much to get us here? What’s with all the security? Why us? We had reached our destination. The limousine passed through several security gates and slowed to a halt at the entrance of the grand building. The guard that had been staring at us spoke, “We’ve arrived, please exit the vehicle and follow me. As you enter the building you’ll undergo several security checks to make sure you don’t have any weapons or banned items. Don’t worry, this is all standard procedure.” Two guards who had been waiting to the side of the entrance walked over to the car and opened the side doors, allowing us to crawl out. Though it had only been a 5 minute car ride, it felt like I had been stuck in that cramped vehicle for hours.
We walked toward the entrance of the titanic building, a large podium with a hologram of the Coalition logo orbiting an artistic depiction of our sector of the galaxy stood just before the doors. The first time I had gone to Aafa as a child, the podium had supported a large statue of Chief Nikonus, the president of the Federation at the time of the war. Good riddance. Our group stepped past the threshold of the senate building and submitted for the security checks that our escort had told us about. As soon as we were cleared, we were led to one of several large doors, it looked like an oversized elevator. Inside was a holographic display of the building showing us our current position, along with a small keypad to the side. I braced myself for the elevator to start ascending as our escort input some numbers into the pad but nearly fell over when it unexpectedly started moving sideways. James chuckled amusedly and I looked at him with a mock pouty face, my tail flicking in slight annoyance. Our escort tried to wipe a tiny smirk off his face as he helped me back to my feet. “We had these installed after a couple instances of people passing out trying to navigate around. Most Coalition species don’t have the amount of endurance humans do and this building is quite large.”
Several moments later the tram came to a halt and the doors slid open. The escort chaperoned us down a short hallway with a decently sized wooden door at the end. I braced myself for whoever would be behind it. Impressions were of utmost importance when meeting government officials. However, I was not prepared for who I would see as the door swung open.
Is that an Arxur?

2023.06.05 11:59 nearspray867 How I turned minimalist and personal tips on packing.
It wasn’t until recently that I became a travel minimalist. Matter of fact, when I was in my teens, I was basically packing everything except the kitchen sink (never could resist cramping in 3-4 towels).
Then my mindset started making a U-turn when I got a cheap 20 lb backpack. Filled with black tea and chocolate bars, it was my faithful travel companion whenever a music festival would roll around.
In 2022, I decided to set out on my first-ever trip – a whole six months across Europe. All on my own, trusty bag notwithstanding. I stuffed it with everything I thought I’d need for 6 months on the road. When I arrived in Italy, I realized I overdid it and brought more than I needed. I just started to leave the stuff I didn’t need in the hotel room.
That period of traveling with everything I needed to live comfortably in just 1 bag was a total game-changer. May sound cliche, but traveling lightly really did change my outlook on life and materialism.
So without further ado, here are my tips for minimalist travel.
- Try to aim for hand luggage
Taking hand luggage forces you to be organized and bring only the essentials with you due to the limited space. The bigger the bag, the more likely you are to fill it, even if it’s not needed. It’s sort of bag psychology!
Not only is it cheaper to use hand luggage as you don’t have to pay for the bag to go into the hold - it’s quicker too. You can literally exit the airport and without having to wait ages for your bag. My friend has a similar philosophy for travels and work. She used to go to the office with a huge handbag filled with all kinds of crap. Now all she takes with her is a full-grain leather
CITY Laptop Bag. Minimalistic, convenient, practical. The bigger the bag, the more stuff you fill it with, so do yourself a favor and go small.
- Give packing cubes a go
Sometimes people pack as if they’re going to another planet. Shops do exist where you’re going unless it’s somewhere remote. On the rare chance you need to buy something you didn’t pack, you’re likely to have that option.
- You’re not flying to Jupiter
I’d heard a lot about compressible packing cubes. I eventually borrowed one from my brother and finally got all the hype!
You can fold up clothes in a bag, zip it up, then use the second zip to compress it even further. Definitely keeps the clothes organized and saves loads of space.
- Plan in advance
If you pack last minute like your train is due to leave in 5 min, you’re more likely to not only pack more but pack inefficiently. Everything you pack should be thought out and serve a purpose. I take a week in advance to draw up a list of the things I need.
- Check the weather beforehand
Sound obvious, but checking the weather for both day and night is crucial to know what type of clothing you need, and is something I’ve neglected to do in the past. Do your research about altitudes as well if you’re planning a trip to the mountains. I have frozen my butt off in the Alps because I underestimated how cold it could get.

2023.06.05 11:58 Tough_Promise_5706 AITA for expecting things to be put away after use in the kitchen?
I live with my partner and we get the majority of our chores done on a weekend. I am responsible for cleaning the kitchen but one things that has started annoying me is that my gf will just leave things on the sides after she uses the instead of putting them away/in the bin. Some examples of this include salt and sauces, used teabags left on the spoon instead of going in the bin, glasses left on the side and a lot more.
On a Saturday I'll deep clean the kitchen and during the week I'll wipe surfaces etc but with my gf leaving things out I'm constantly have to be putting things away. I've mentioned to her about putting things in the bin after use or putting them in the cupboards etc but her reply is that it isn't a big deal and I chose to have the kitchen to clean as one of the chores. I agreed with that point but argued that that doesn't mean she shouldn't do anything in the kitchen. I pointed out she wanted to clean the bathroom but I'll still clean up after I shave and clean the bath after I've showered etc even though the bathroom is her chore.
She said that that's not the same and that it hardly takes much effort for me to put them away but she wouldn't accept that if it's no big deal then she should be fine putting her own things away. She said it was just me trying to get her to do some of my chores and that she shouldn't have to so I should just drop it.
AITA for expecting my partner to put things away/in the bin in the kitchen after she's used them?

2023.06.05 11:55 mellowmadre Carry-On only for Business Travel
I travel a lot for work and cannot afford to lose a checked bag, so I only do carry-on. This means I need to pack both casual and business attire, which can be challenging. It has taken some practice and watching a lot of Youtube videos on packing, but I am getting close to what works for me. I'd appreciate any advice you have. The bag is a bit on the heavy side but still within the airline’s limits and I’m able to lift it into the overhead bins on my own. Below is what I packed for a 10-day trip.
THE BAGS:
Carry-on luggage by Sigg – it is a discontinued brand but I love it. The 2-wheeled bag is a super tough (ballistic nylon) exterior with a compression zipper, telescoping handle, and a zipped water bottle holder on the outside. Normally, I’m a spinner luggage kind-of-gal, but the 2 wheels on this bag can be pushed somewhat like a spinner rather than dragged like most 2-wheeled bags. It also has a couple outer zipped areas for a laptop, pens, thin papers, etc). On the inside it is split in two major compartments, with the base fully lined with waterproof nylon that opens with zipper (I keep my garment bag under the liner just in case there are any spills in or around my bag), built-in compression straps, a mesh center divider for underclothes, and one side with elastic shoe sleeve pockets. There are a couple smaller pockets along the edges of the bag interior, including one thin waterproof one.
Personal Item by BagSmart (a Nomadlane dupe), fits under the seat in front of you and opens up fully like a suitcase. 2 main compartments and two additional exterior pockets which is handy but there are features of this bag I don’t like, such as the trolley sleeve and waterbottle sleeve—both are too tight to be useful. But it is a fraction of the cost of the Nomadlane bag, so it will work for now.
2 generic medium sized packing cubes / 1 medium toiletries bag / 1 jewelry case / 1 clear quart liquids bag with a zipper / 2 smaller sorting bags (reusing free business class toiletry bags) / 1 laundry bag / 1 ziploc bag / 1 thin cloth folding garment bag (feels like reusable grocery bag material) / 1 purse
THE STRATEGY:
Maintain normal business appearance but minimize by wearing neutrals and all within the same color palette. Buy travel sizes of almost everything, organize by dividing items into smaller containers by type and time of usage (on the plane vs in the hotel room vs at work vs out touring); Economize space by bringing fewer bulky items by using the hotel’s hairdryer, steaming my business clothes in the bathroom while I shower or use the hotel’s iron, have shoes and clothes that are versatile for several outfits but also reuse/wash (in the sink) clothes as necessary. Try to get a workout in when possible.
CLOTHES: (folded in Marie Kondo style or hung in the garment bag, which is folded in half)
In the packing cubes:
2 cardigans
3 t-shirts (one worn on the plane)
1 pair of yoga pants
2 jeans (one worn on the plane)
2 slip skirts
1 pair of capri pants
1 pair of silk pajamas
1 casual dress (with folded items in packing cube)
In the compartments built into the suitcase:
2 sports bras
11 pairs of underwear
1 pair of wool socks
2 pair of sport socks
1 full-body Spanx
1 slimming camisole
1 one-piece swimsuit
1 pantyhose
3 underwire bras (one worn on the plane)
3 pairs of shoes—sandals, flats and one pair of sneakers worn on the plane
In the garment bag:
6 thin blouses (includes 1 button down)
1 black suit with 1 blazer, 2 pants and 1 skirt
1 khaki dress pants
In the personal item:
1 R1 Patagonia full zip hoodie (worn on the plane)
1 Longchamp foldable Le Pliage Shopping purse – serves as my work laptop bag and my purse
1 pair of compression socks
TOILETRIES AND MAKEUP
I divide these into two major categories – on the plane and at the hotel. For on the plane, I use 2 small bags which are kept in my personal item-- one for liquids and another for anything else I need without needing to get into my carry-on suitcase.
1 pack of gum
1 face mist
2 lip balms
4+ lipsticks and glosses
1 Tyme hair iron
1 eyeshadow palette
1 bareminerals foundation powder
Powder, eyebrow, eyeshadow, lip and blush brushes

2 Lip Liners
2 Pencil Sharpeners
1 Deodorant

Ibuprofen, Benadryl, Bandaids, Neosporin, sleep aid for the plane
Toothbrush, floss, plackers/picks, mouthwash and toothpaste
Cerave AM and Under Eye Cream
1 Dermaplaner

Several sets of noise canceling ear plugs (Mack’s silicone and the foam ones)
Several face masks and 2 eye masks
3 scarves (especially useful when in the Middle East)
1 pair of sunglasses
2 pairs of eyeglasses (worn 1 on the plane)

1 travel wallet
1 belt that reverses black and brown
1 journal
1 work notebook and pens

Tiny salt & pepper
10 Protein bars

2023.06.05 11:55 KingofSpain0 Deuteronomy 33
Deuteronomy 33:1-29
This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced on the Israelites before his death. 2 He said:
“The Lord came from Sinai and dawned over them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran. He came with myriads of holy ones from the south, from his mountain slopes. 3 Surely it is you who love the people; all the holy ones are in your hand. At your feet they all bow down, and from you receive instruction, 4 the law that Moses gave us, the possession of the assembly of Jacob. 5 He was king over Jeshurun when the leaders of the people assembled, along with the tribes of Israel.
6 “Let Reuben live and not die, nor his people be few.”
7 And this he said about Judah:
“Hear, Lord, the cry of Judah; bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause. Oh, be his help against his foes!”
8 About Levi he said:
“Your Thummim and Urim belong to your faithful servant. You tested him at Massah; you contended with him at the waters of Meribah. 9 He said of his father and mother, ‘I have no regard for them.’ He did not recognize his brothers or acknowledge his own children, but he watched over your word and guarded your covenant. 10 He teaches your precepts to Jacob and your law to Israel. He offers incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your altar. 11 Bless all his skills, Lord, and be pleased with the work of his hands. Strike down those who rise against him, his foes till they rise no more.”
12 About Benjamin he said:
“Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.”
13 About Joseph he said:
“May the Lord bless his land with the precious dew from heaven above and with the deep waters that lie below; 14 with the best the sun brings forth and the finest the moon can yield; 15 with the choicest gifts of the ancient mountains and the fruitfulness of the everlasting hills; 16 with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush. Let all these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among his brothers. 17 In majesty he is like a firstborn bull; his horns are the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations, even those at the ends of the earth. Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim; such are the thousands of Manasseh.”
18 About Zebulun he said:
“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out, and you, Issachar, in your tents. 19 They will summon peoples to the mountain and there offer the sacrifices of the righteous; they will feast on the abundance of the seas, on the treasures hidden in the sand.”
20 About Gad he said:
“Blessed is he who enlarges Gad’s domain! Gad lives there like a lion, tearing at arm or head. 21 He chose the best land for himself; the leader’s portion was kept for him. When the heads of the people assembled, he carried out the Lord’s righteous will, and his judgments concerning Israel.”
22 About Dan he said:
“Dan is a lion’s cub, springing out of Bashan.”
23 About Naphtali he said:
“Naphtali is abounding with the favor of the Lord and is full of his blessing; he will inherit southward to the lake.”
24 About Asher he said:
“Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be favored by his brothers, and let him bathe his feet in oil. 25 The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze, and your strength will equal your days.
26 “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides across the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. 27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, ‘Destroy them!’ 28 So Israel will live in safety; Jacob will dwell secure in a land of grain and new wine, where the heavens drop dew. 29 Blessed are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will tread on their heights.”

2023.06.05 11:39 noahwentbackto505 AITA for keeping a hand towel with permanent stains?
English isn't my first language. So, I (20NB) share a dormitory flat with several girls, currently there are 3 of us: one is Stacy (19F) and other is Mary (18F). Stacy and I live in the same room, while Mary lives in the other room, we've all met in September at the beginning of school year. Stacy and I get along very well together and I now consider her my friend. I only meet Mary in common spaces, such as kitchen and corridor, so we don't talk very often, but we're quite friendly to each other I guess, we helped each other with some household stuff. Mary and Stacy have been living in the dorm for one school year, I have been here for 3 years already, so I think I'm more used to different people's habits and personal items being around than them, but, well, enough time has passed since September.
we have 2 bathrooms: one has the shower, sink and toilet, the other has the washing machine, sink and toilet. I keep a towel for my hands and face in both of them in case one bathroom is busy when I have to use it. my towels have survived the horrors of dorm's washing machine and, well, they're old enough, but I keep them clean and wash them frequently like a sane person. they unfortunately have some permanent stains on them that won't come off after several cycles of washing and that seems to bother Mary as she doesn't like to see a towel with (dry, not smelly and not dirtying other things) stains. she texted in our group chat asking whose towel is this and that it's been frustrating her for a long time with all the stains and that it looks bad. I felt kinda embarrassed so I took it in my room, I didn't answer the text. but like this is my flat too and I think I can keep towel in the bathroom just like everyone else. Stacy says that Mary's aesthetic preferences aren't my problem and I kinda agree but I also feel embarrassed bc I'm worried they'll gonna see me as dirty pig or something. I can't afford to buy new towel atm anyway. so, AITA if I kept this towel in our bathroom?
