2023.05.31 15:28 ExtremistPeacemaker The Federated States of Bombenfein falls apart and chaos erupts
The Federated States of Bombenfein (F.S.B.) is finally experiencing societal collapse and many are happy that those neo-Nazis are going out of luck. After losing in a 2 month tense battle with the Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy, the FSB has been significantly weakened and moral is low. Their top leader, "The Great, White Man" is living in exile in West Virginia while they are even fleeing from there as Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy grabs land in the West Virginian mountain-lands and Ohio. Bombenfein's top military general, who goes by "Sir Bullet", has been hiding somewhere in the Virginia countryside and seems to fear that the Q.I.A. (Qarsherskiy Intelligence Agency) is on to his location soon. Many of us are happy to hear this amazing news.

2023.05.31 01:13 PollyTLHist1849 The War of the Second Coalition: The Midterms of 1798 To Begin the World Again
| Thomas Jefferson first saw his election as a blessing, a miracle. By 1798, he wished he were never cursed to election. The Election of 1796. Jefferson's Tenure In 1797, Jefferson won the election for Chief Consul in a surprisingly hard-fought election. Now, using Arnold's legacy, he sought to undo what the Federalists had done. He started with the Tariff Act of 1797, reducing tariffs to record lows. As the deficit increased, he slashed the budget of the military, and did his best to undo a standing navy. American soldiers would be condemned to getting yellow fever on the frontier, and American ships would rot in ports. A cartoon made by Republicans opposing tariffs. Next, Jefferson went after the national bank. He was convinced that the bank was nothing but cronies, giving bribes to allies and taking money from honest Americans. Jefferson had enough. The Bank War began. The Bank War Jefferson sought to defeat the bank plaguing America. He faced considerable opposition from the Agrarians, who had waned after the Midnight Revolt. The Federalists, of course, were inconsolably enraged. Jefferson sought to repeal the unconstitutional Bank Charter Act, the Agrarians and their cult-of-personality be damned. Of course, that was easier said than done. Jefferson's first plan was to get the Supreme Judiciary to "rule" against the bill. Jay would never do that. He later attempted to get the Secretary of the Treasury, Albert Gallatin, to simply refuse to manage the bank. No luck. He looked to Congress. Federalists accused Jefferson's attempt to repeal the bank as anti-American. In 1797, Jefferson tried to get the Bank Repeal Act through Congress. He assembled the coalition, and mobilized the Republican Party in a final war on the bank. However, thanks to Federalist-Agrarian cooperation, the Bank Repeal Act was struck down before it could reach Jefferson's office. As furious as the Virginian was, that would be the least of his worries in only a month. A Real War on the Horizon In 1797, former Chief Consul Thomas Paine was appointed ambassador to France, aboard the Anthony Beckett Clayborne. The ship vanished. Later that year, news emerged that it had been captured by the Royal Navy, Paine and a few other diplomats rotting in a prison. Jefferson couldn't believe what he was hearing. Enraged, Jefferson sent a letter to Parliament, demanding that the prisoners be returned in exchange for the so-called "ABC Affair" being forgiven. The British, however, weren't willing to do that. They discovered that Paine was behind the so-called "Dublin Pamphlet", an anonymous pamphlet calling for revolution by the Irish against Britain. The Dublin Pamphlet was immensely successful, and Britain was bogged down in an uprising. They blamed Paine. Worse yet, the French were trapped in the War of the Second Coalition. The War of the Second Coalition In 1797, France was at war. Again. They had established several sister republics, and with the ABC Affair, it seemed that the United States may join France's crusade for liberty, equality, and fraternity. As the British sent insults the way of America, it became increasingly clear that war was inevitable. As the Republicans cried for war, so too did Chief Consul Jefferson. In early 1798, war was declared. The Solemn War begins. Immediate Problems Jefferson's cuts to the military and navy came back to haunt him. He had to mobilize an untrained, unequipped, and undersized army from nothing, while the Federalists had a field day hollering at their "idiocy". Jefferson believed he could turn it around. He found a good strategy. John Paul Jones, Secretary of the Navy, had a good plan. The Americans wouldn't confront the British. Instead, they'd harass the British at sea, launching flares, and occasionally doing conflict. Just as soon as they arrived, they'd leave. This did two things. It wore the British down, and it bought America what it desperately needed: time. Time to build more ships, time to await French intervention. Unfortunately, it made for mediocre press coverage. The Factions The Federalists, after their humiliation in the Fraunces Tavern Conspiracy and their defeat in the ensuing election, saw their fortunes turn for the better. They hollered at the Republicans for their "mishandling of the war", and promised to turn it around with tariffs to fund the army and keep the navy floating. However, some Federalists denounced this pro-war tone. They constituted the anti-war faction, demanding that America leave the foolish war altogether. They were endorsed by Alexander Hamilton, and led by Timothy Pickering. The Republicans, on the other hand, were united in support of the war. Disunity came in the form of the Madison Tariff, a tariff drafted up by James Madison out of desperation for the disrepair of the army. This was quite the shift, and many opposed it. The Agrarian Justice Party was increasingly dominated by the charismatic orator Aaron Burr. Burr had begun to idolize general Napoleon Bonaparte, a general responsible for countless victories and most of Italy. Burr's followers became known as the Wide-Awakes, and they generally simply supported Burr. The opponents of Burr mobilized, establishing the Paine wing. They demanded that the party never fall to the ravings of a narcissistic, delusional megalomaniac, and instead establish itself as the vanguard of the poor and weary farmers of America. America stands at a crossroads once again. Six factions contend, hoping to give their solution to the war. Many believe they can solve it, but only a few will be able to see their plan through. In this time... Who has your vote for the Midterms of 1798? View Poll submitted by PollyTLHist1849 to Presidentialpoll [link] [comments] |

2023.05.25 14:54 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Soft Target by Julia Claire & Crooked Media (05/24/23)
"They're living on planet crazy, and I don't frankly want to be on that same planet with them because they've lost their minds." - Former Arizona GOP candidate for governor Kari Lake, perhaps projecting just a tad after losing yet another legal challenge to the election she definitively lost. The Death Ceiling
With a little over a week left until the government runs out of money, defaults on its debts, and sends the global economy into a tailspin, Republicans in Congress have seemingly unified to ensure that happens. - Well, folks, we’ve happened upon the most destructive version of “Same shit, different day.” After it looked like negotiations between the White House and Republican leaders were getting somewhere (anywhere?) the latter have once again dug in their heels with demands to reduce spending only in ways that would hurt the most vulnerable Americans. As Rep. AOC (D-NY) said in a press conference today, Republicans, led by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, “are engaged in hostage-taking, not negotiation.”
- Republicans, it turns out, agree with AOC. Several of them have done the whole “say the quiet part loud” thing in the past 24 hours. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said wants to hold out for the entire GOP wish list, and that he doesn’t “feel like we should negotiate with our hostage.” It isn’t just Gaetz, though. When McCarthy, along with Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) and Garret Graves (R-LA), have been asked what concessions Republicans have offered in these negotiations, they all said the GOP concession is “raise the debt ceiling.” In other words, they get what they want, and in exchange they agree not to wreck the economy.
- McCarthy said on Wednesday that his team of little cretin negotiators would return to the White House to continue debt limit talks, but that the two sides were “still far apart.” McCarthy repeated that defaulting was not an option, but also offered no concessions to his insane list of demands. In a press conference, he said “it’s not my fault” that the nation is careening towards a crisis that will reverberate throughout the whole world, which is, of course, a lie. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries offered a shrewd synopsis of the problem in a press conference of his own, saying, “House Republicans are determined to crash the economy, because they believe it will benefit them politically.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen them pull this shit. President Biden has built his entire career on “reaching across the aisle” to compromise and “get things done.” But, with all due respect to our guy, what good can come of compromise when one side is saying “Raise the debt ceiling” and the other side is saying, “We’re gonna shoot you in the head,”?

It has been one year since the devastating mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX, and many of the victims’ families are still searching for answers. A Washington Post investigation found that law enforcement’s deadly decision to wait more than an hour to confront the gunman was not solely the fault of the former chief of the school district’s police force. It was also caused by the inaction of an array of senior and supervising law-enforcement officers who had direct knowledge that the shooting was taking place inside the classrooms, but did not intervene. Those officers remain on the job in the area to this day. The Post reviewed dozens of hours of police body-camera video footage, as well as post-shooting interviews with officers and other resources, and found at least seven officers who stalled even as the evidence that children were still in danger became incontrovertible. Top state law-enforcement and government officials promised to hold all those responsible for the 77-minute delay accountable, but all of the officers in question remain employed by the same agencies they worked for last year. The Texas Department of Public Safety cleared almost all investigations into six officers for wrongdoing, and the department’s chief, Col. Steven McCraw, who said he would personally resign if his agency had failed Uvalde, still insists it did not. Only four of the almost 200 officers who responded from state and local law-enforcement agencies were fired in the wake of the tragedy. Nineteen children and two teachers were murdered one year ago today, and they deserve closure they have not yet received.
What Else?
In an award acceptance speech at the American Law Institute, Chief Justice John Roberts said on Tuesday night that he is “confident” the Supreme Court will resolve its ethics issues and regain public trust that it “adheres to the highest standards of conduct.” Lol, sure.
The House voted to overturn president Biden’s student debt relief plan, with Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME) and Marie Glusenkamp Pérez (D-WA) joining all Republicans in supporting the GOP resolution. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) launched his presidential campaign in disastrous fashion on Twitter Spaces with his pal Elon Musk. Like anvilles-falling-out-of-the-sky-level calamity.
Former U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been—once again—referred to the police by government officials to assess accusations that he may have further violated coronavirus regulations. Johnson was fined last year while still in office for breaking a bunch of Covid rules in 2020 as part of a series of scandals that brought down his administration.
Following a report about Iran’s new underground tunnel system near a nuclear enrichment facility, the head of the country’s nuclear program insisted that the government would cooperate with international inspectors on any “new activities.” Meta executed the last round of a three-part series of layoffs today. Since March, the company has eliminated 10,000 roles after laying off 11,000 employees last fall.
A United Nations migration agency announced on Wednesday that fighting between Sudan’s military and paramilitary forces has displaced over 1.3 million people. Special counsel Jack Smith is wrapping up his criminal investigation into whether or not disgraced former president Donald Trump stole classified White House documents and then took them to his Mar-a-Lago home. Real mystery there!
Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) declared a state of emergency for North Carolina’s public education system due to “extreme legislation” being pushed by the state’s GOP lawmakers who plan to “starve public education” through further tax cuts and funding increases for private school vouchers. The United States has announced nearly $524 million in additional humanitarian aid for the Horn of Africa in an effort to address some of the extreme effects of climate change and the region’s worst drought in 40 years. Queen of Rock and Roll Tina Turner passed away today at age 83. You Gotta Be Fucking Kidding Me
After rolling out its Pride Collection at the beginning of May, retail giant Target has decided to kowtow to a bigoted right-wing mob by removing some of its products from stores. The company said in a statement that since introducing the collection, “we’ve experienced threats impacting our team members’ sense of safety and wellbeing while at work.” In other words, increasingly violent right-wing bigots have been throwing the merchandise on the floor, vandalizing stores, and harassing or even physically assaulting Target employees. The merchandise Target pulled from its shelves and website included items with slogans like “cure transphobia not trans people.” Target has been celebrating Pride Month with dedicated collections for over a decade. Framing the issue as the Pride merchandise putting Target employees in danger, rather than bigoted psychopaths putting everyone in danger, is a dangerous (and cowardly!) precedent to set. The problem is violent, hateful (let’s be honest) Trump supporters, not a tote bag that says “too queer for here.” Historically, giving in to violent extremists has [checks notes] not worked out.

Tina Turner, the raspy-voiced fireball who overcame domestic abuse and industry ambivalence to emerge as one of rock and soul's brassiest, most rousing and most inspirational performers, died Wednesday at age of 83.
Born Anna Mae Bullock on Nov. 26, 1939, Turner grew up in Nutbush, Tennessee, a rural and unincorporated area in Haywood County chronicled in her song "Nutbush City Limits." According to Turner, her family were "Well-to-do farmers" who lived well off the business of sharecropping.
Frequently, Turner and her sister would head to nightclubs in St. Louis and East St. Louis, where she first saw Ike Turner perform as the bandleader of Kings of Rhythm.
In 1960, Ike and Tina Turner released their debut single, "A Fool in Love." It was an immediate success, reaching the Top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Turner's comeback began in 1982, when Heaven 17, the British synth-pop band, recruited her for a remake of the Temptations' "Ball of Confusion." The song led to a new record deal for Turner with Capitol.
Turner's manager, Roger Davies, then suggested that she and Heaven 17's Martyn Ware cut a remake of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," which hit the top 30 in the U.S. With that, and the support of her friend David Bowie, Turner began recording her Capitol debut, Private Dancer.

2023.05.23 20:46 CrassostreaVirginica Meta: r/Virginia is considering a rule that would require a submission statement on posts of paywalled news articles. Feedback on this rule and other suggestions for the subreddit are requested.
Hello all,
While people are always welcome to
modmail us, the mods are also trying to have more routine community/meta threads to solicit feedback on the state of the subreddit.
We have one proposed new rule for the subreddit that we'd like to get folks' feedback on. This rule would require posts of any news article from a paywalled news site to have a submission statement attached in one of two ways. This requirement would apply whether the site has a metered/soft paywall or a strict/hard one, and could be satisfied either by making a direct post and leaving a submission statement in a comment, OR by making a text post that contains a submission statement and a link to the news article in question.
We would not want submission statements to be overly burdensome, or infringing on copyright, or misleading, or uninformative. After considering these factors, we are currently leaning towards requiring submission statements to be "A four-sentence (or lengthier) summary that is worded in a manner that a reasonable person would describe as neutral." Important note: this cannot be a direct copy-paste of the article or a portion of it, but would have to be in OP's own words.
Major news outlets that are frequently posted to this subreddit that this rule would affect include: The Washington Post, The Richmond Times-Dispatch, The Virginian-Pilot, and others.
Of course, you are welcome to raise any other issue or suggestion you have for the subreddit in the comments below or by modmailing us at the link above.

The Digital Gateway in Prince William County’s Rural Crescent
Edit: Some of you asked some really good questions about this, so I wanted to put all the info in one place. You can find pretty much everything everything you need to know here:
https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ee22d95cc38642e8a2571897afb75a28 Some bullet points: -
Water: Over 1 million people in Northern Virginia drink water from the Occoquan Reservoir, which is fed by several streams and wetlands within the Rural Crescent...When land is developed, the surface of the ground is graded, tamped down, and covered with an impermeable surface, such as asphalt or concrete. When rainwater hits these hard surfaces it cannot absorb into the ground as it naturally would, so it becomes runoff , flowing along and collecting oils, trash and sediments as it makes its way to the nearest surface water body. This results in water contamination in all nearby water sources such as lakes, rivers and streams.
-Fairfax County strongly opposed to this project and urges PWC to complete a water study before rezoning. https://www.princewilliamtimes.com/news/fairfax-supervisors-urge-prince-william-board-to-postpone-digital-gateway-rezonings-until-water-study-is/article_623653a6-56e1-11ed-bc6f-eb62e9bee299.html Citing concerns about the health of the Occoquan Reservoir, which provides drinking water to 800,000 Northern Virginians, Fairfax County officials are again urging the Prince William Board of County Supervisors to study the impacts of the “Prince William Digital Gateway” – or any significant new commercial development in the rural area – before moving forward.
While not our usual practice, we believe it’s appropriate for our board to send a letter to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors endorsing our staff’s memos and requesting that prior to any zoning actions, additional study and coordination occur so that the two counties can continue to work together to address issues of mutual concern.
--Endangered Species Aside from the destruction of Manassas Battlefield Park’s historic atmosphere, the proposed data center would also alter the landscape in such a way that water quality would be at high risk of impairment. Endangered species that rely on the carefully stewarded land would be forced to adapt, or disappear, due to these unwelcome disturbances. https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ee22d95cc38642e8a2571897afb75a28
--National and State Parks Kyle Hart from the National Parks Conservation Association calls is “one of the worst threats [to our national parks] we have ever seen. https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/virginia/prince-william-county/opposition-to-prince-william-co-digital-gateway-plan-remains-strong-as-new-plans-are-revealed/
The Rural Crescent is home to two federally protected national parks: Manassas Battlefield National Park and Prince William National Forest Park. The PW Digital Gateway Comprehensive Plan Amendment (CPA) proposal includes parcels located directly along the park's border. If approved, visitors to the park would be greeted by the sight of expansive, flat gray buildings adjacent to the historic battlefield, and an ever-present whirring noise produced by the data center’s power and cooling machines. https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ee22d95cc38642e8a2571897afb75a28
Prince William Forest National Park is also being threatened. But it too is threatened by a newly proposed 160-acre data center that would actually cut into the park’s legislative boundary. the areas that are being targeted for development are home to at least 9 endangered or threatened species of plants and animals, and Prince William Forest Park has been ranked the second most pristine forest among national parks in the eastern United States for its plant species. https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ee22d95cc38642e8a2571897afb75a28
--Missing data from the digital gateway plans and other concerns https://www.princewilliamtimes.com/news/larger-parks-county-supervisors-want-for-the-pw-digital-gateway-are-missing-from-data-centers/article_49a2d674-f5bb-11ed-bd6c-97519cebf646.html --Energy and Water Consumption Lots of data processing takes up lots of energy, so data centers also require 24/7 access to a large supply of electricity. Data centers can also use significant amounts of water for cooling. A 15-megawatt data center can use up to 360,000 gallons a day , for example. https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ee22d95cc38642e8a2571897afb75a28
--Does not fit in with citizens' priorities From February 22, 2021 to April 19, 2021, the Prince William County Planning Office conducted polls and community engagement meetings to determine local citizens' priorities for the future of the county. The results overwhelmingly showed that most people in Prince William County value preservation of rural lands, forests, parks, open space, and recreation, history, and environment. https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ee22d95cc38642e8a2571897afb75a28
--Wasteful use of land Loudoun County does not allow any data center development in the Rural Policy Area west of Leesburg. Prince William currently has enough land to surpass the data center development of Loudoun County—without the proposed PW Digital Gateway CPA. Why Do Developers Want to Build in Rural Areas? Rural land is cheaper to buy.
--Opposition The Digital Gateway Plan is opposed by several groups, including: PWCA, National Parks Conservation Association, Coalition to Save Historic Thoroughfare, Piedmont Environmental Council, Manassas Battle Trust, and Virginia Native Plant Society.
In short, this is VERY poorly planned, will affect our water quality, and create unnecessary sprawl. Unfortunately this is not well-known due to lack of media coverage so PWC citizen's are being kept in the dark. I hope this helps everyone understand this more. PWC residents, protect our county and please consider voting Wheeler OUT!
Original Post:
Imagine buying a beautiful home in rural Prince William County just to find out a data center will be built within eye-shot. This area was a
protected zone until Ann Wheeler and the board of county supervisors voted to reverse that protection so they could build data centers. Yes, I’m voting for Deshundra!

School union members are fighting for collective bargaining. They say the board is stalling to vote on the resolution. Joyce Chu The Progress-Index
PETERSBURG—At the May 17 school board meeting, an administrator got up to read a proclamation recognizing teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week as a teacher wearing a red shirt that said "No decisions about us without us" shook her head.
"Whereas, teachers are trusted, respected professionals who must be empowered and supported to do their best work and to provide high-quality, innovative learning experiences that serve all students...whereas, every Virginian knows a great teacher who made the difference in his or her life or in the life of a loved one, and we thank those educators during Teacher Appreciation Week and always..."
After the reading of the proclamation, teachers were asked to stand up in recognition of their hard work. As they stood, they held up signs that read “Vote for collective bargaining now!” for the school board and superintendent to see.
During the public comment period, teachers came up to urge the school board to pass a resolution that would allow them the right to negotiate their contracts, salaries, and working conditions.
“Petersburg public school students deserve qualified teachers like myself in every classroom, and unfortunately, decisions have not been made thus far to ensure that,” said Demi Williams, a teacher at Pleasant’s Lane Elementary.
"Not passing our resolution is hurtful to employees like myself who have suffered and endured the school year. Not passing the resolution says to others that Petersburg doesn't value their employees. not passing the resolutions says to the community and all stakeholders involved that teachers are easily replaceable when we know that's not the case. Not passing the resolution adds to the general generational trauma that has plagued the city.”
Some school board members stared blankly at Williams and others did not make eye contact while teachers cheered at the end of her speech.
Some felt the teacher's appreciation proclamation was purely performative.
"If the board truly believed what they wrote and said then they would not hesitate to pass our collective bargaining resolution," middle school history teacher Vannay Kirkland told the Progress-Index. "The fact that they would acknowledge us as cornerstones of the whole system but cannot negotiate a contract with us smacks of hypocrisy and empty virtue signaling."
Why teachers care about collective bargaining
Collective bargaining is crucial for them, and anyone employed by the school district, to be able to negotiate their salaries, benefits, and working conditions, members say. Working conditions can be anything from class size limits to having a prep period, to having breaks to use the restroom, and any other health and safety issue.
In 2020, the General Assembly overturned a 1977 Virginia Supreme Court decision that banned public employees from having the right to bargain their contracts, opening the door for teachers across the state to have a greater say in their treatment.
But the General Assembly’s resolution must be adopted by the school board in order to be in effect, which the board has the power to deny or approve.
Union members feel the school board is "stalling" to vote on the resolution
Petersburg teachers and union members are frustrated by what they see as a “delay tactic” by the school board to vote on a resolution that would allow them to have collective bargaining.
Teachers and union members involved with the Petersburg Education Union worked in earnest to gather the required signatures and documents to present to the school board. They collected a total of 532 signatures on authorization cards from employees across the district, accounting for over 80% of employees--which exceeded the required 51% of cards needed. After getting the cards validated and notarized, they sent a copy to every school board member and the superintendent on Jan. 31 to let them know they have all the documents necessary to open up collective bargaining.
Under the
General Assembly statute, the school board is required take a vote on whether or not to enter into collective bargaining “within 120 days of receiving certification from a majority of public employees.”
That would mean that the board has to cast their votes by May 31, said Evette Wilson, union representative and retired teacher. But the board doesn’t seem to be honoring this deadline. Instead, the board’s attorney told Wilson that they have until Aug. 17 to cast a vote, based on a different timeline of when the attorney verified the cards on April 17.
Other localities that were able to get the resolution passed for collective bargaining have counted the 120 days from when the authorization cards were first notarized, said Wilson.
“If other localities interpret the statute as we do, why is Petersburg choosing to be the odd child?” said Wilson. “We see that as a delay tactic.”
The P-I reached out to the board's attorney, Haney Phinyowattanchip PLLC, for a comment on the reasoning for the later timeline but has received no response.
Policy analyst Chad Stewart of the Virginia Education Association thinks that the board might be framing this resolution in the wrong way. "They should be doing everything they can to accelerate this process because it's in their best interest," he said.
The timeline of when the school board votes on this resolution has a huge impact on this coming year, teachers in the union say. It directly impacts their decision to leave or to stay in the district.
Teachers need to turn in their contracts by June 15 and decisions on whether to stay or leave the district are riding on whether this resolution gets passed. If the school board decides to vote on the resolution in August, union members say that that will be too late, including Williams, who has received offers from other schools.
"Do I continue with the same working conditions knowing that this resolution may not get passed?" Williams said. "They're telling us what our working terms and conditions are, which are deplorable. Do I have the mental capacity to stay for that long?"
The P-I reached out to school board chair Kenneth Pritchett and vice chair Steven Pierce, as well as Superintendent Tarama Sterling for a response on their stance regarding collective bargaining and the reason for the delay and received no response.
Not having collective bargaining increases teacher turnover, research shows
Collective bargaining reduces teacher transfers and turnovers and lessens the reliance on first-year teachers to staff schools, especially in high-poverty districts, according
to a 2006 study conducted by the American Federation of Teachers drawing national data from the U.S. Department of Education.
However, without a collective bargaining agreement, high-poverty schools hire new teachers three times more than low-poverty schools.
“We want [the resolution to pass] so badly. Not only would it be good for the school system, but it would be good for the community,” said Freda Curtis, a member of the union. “It will cut down on the recidivism of teachers having such a large turnover because teachers have a seat at the table...to negotiate the things that they need in the classroom.”
Petersburg already has had a high teacher vacancy rate of 7%, and more teachers are poised to leave by the end of the school year.
The Petersburg City Public Schools job postings shows that
there are 21 teacher positions for hire, as well as 45 other positions open for the administrative and support staff side. Wilson says that she knows of at least 14 more teachers that are planning to leave from just one of the schools by the end of this year.
But Petersburg's teacher vacancy problem is much worse than what these stats can tell due to the number of teachers who are not fully licensed, says policy analyst Stewart.
Petersburg has the highest rate of provisionally licensed teachers in the state, at 31%. Provisionally-licensed teachers do not need a teaching credential to teach, as the only requirement is to have a bachelor's degree and no criminal history. They can only teach for up to three years with a provisional license.
"Of all divisions that could use collective bargaining, it's Petersburg," says Stewart. "The conditions are so challenging that unless they can have a little but more decision making at the employee level they're probably going to keep hemorrhaging workers."
In addition, high teacher turnover is directly tied to student performance, as
a 2013 study showed that it led to worse reading and math scores especially with Black and lower-performing students.
“Unfortunately, it’s the children who will lose out,” said Wilson.
Two months ago, two of Williams' students moms passed away in unforeseen circumstances. Since then, those children have latched onto her as a pseudo-mom, and Williams have formed close bonds with them. One even called her at 10 p.m. and told Williams that she loved her.
“See my worth that my students see in me,” said Williams. “That's why I want to cry because it's like, you don't even know what I mean to these kids. And if I leave I'm just another body.
"If they sign a resolution, I will consider coming back because that means you really value what we're saying," said Williams.

New power plant regulations
The EPA unveiled new regulations last week to slash greenhouse gas emissions from coal and gas power plants across the nation. The final rule allows utilities to work with state regulators to determine how best to meet the EPA’s goal of eliminating nearly all carbon dioxide emissions by 2038. Coal plants could switch to less carbon-intensive fuels such as hydrogen and gas, while gas and coal plants could install carbon capture technology. Plants that fail to reduce emissions could be forced to close.
Biden’s attempt to curb power plant emissions comes after the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan was stayed by the Supreme Court and ultimately reversed by the Trump administration. Then, the Supreme Court limited the EPA’s power to regulate greenhouse gases, ruling in West Virginia v. EPA that the agency cannot prescribe statewide performance metrics; instead, the EPA must regulate emissions at the individual plant level.
The new regulatory scheme is, hopefully, a way to limit emissions while staying within the Supreme Court’s framework. According to the EPA, if finalized, the new standards would avoid up to 617 million metric tons of total carbon dioxide, cut tens of thousands of tons of particulate matter, and prevent approximately 1,300 premature deaths, more than 800 hospital and emergency room visits, and more than 300,000 cases of asthma attacks.
Manchin
Before the EPA even had a chance to release its new regulations, West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin announced that he will “oppose every EPA nominee” due to the EPA’s “expected overreach targeting power plant emissions.”
This Administration is determined to advance its radical climate agenda and has made it clear they are hellbent on doing everything in their power to regulate coal and gas-fueled power plants out of existence, no matter the cost to energy security and reliability. Just last week, before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, every FERC Commissioner agreed that we cannot eliminate coal today or in the near future if we want to have a reliable electric grid. If the reports are true, the pending EPA proposal would impact nearly all fossil-fueled power plants in the United States, which generate about 60 percent of our electricity, without an adequate plan to replace the lost baseload generation. This piles on top of a broader regulatory agenda being rolled out designed to kill the fossil industry by a thousand cuts.
Neither the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law nor the IRA gave new authority to regulate power plant emission standards. However, I fear that this Administration’s commitment to their extreme ideology overshadows their responsibility to ensure long-lasting energy and economic security and I will oppose all EPA nominees until they halt their government overreach.
Of course, Manchin has an interest in keeping coal plants running: The senator has made over $5 million from his family business delivering waste coal (one of the most carbon-intensive fuels) to a West Virginian power plant.
Conservation
The Bureau of Land Management recently proposed new regulations that would allow federal land to be leased for conservation purposes, putting it on equal footing with oil, mining, and grazing interests.
[The new rule] proposes conservation leasing, a tool authorized by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), to facilitate restoration work on public lands in cooperation with community partners. A conservation lease is a time-limited lease of public land that allows interested organizations to conduct specific restoration or mitigation activities and would generate revenue for the American taxpayer. This tool has the potential to expand opportunities to accelerate restoration of big game migration corridors or establish carbon markets, for example, and directly responds to comments from state and industry partners on the need for a reliable path on public lands by which to pursue compensatory mitigation to facilitate development projects.
Republicans in western states have already organized against the new regulations, with Sen. John Barasso of Wyoming filing a bill to block the proposal.
Earlier this month [Barasso] berated Interior Secretary Deb Haaland over it during an Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing, saying she was “giving radicals a new tool to shut out the public.”
“The secretary wants to make non-use a use,” said Barrasso, the ranking Republican on the committee. “She is ... turning federal law on its head.”
Limiting renewable energy
The Montana state legislature passed a series of bills to limit the ability of state agencies and localities to enact climate-friendly environmental policies.
- The Republican-controlled House suspended their own rules to introduce legislation that prohibits the state from analyzing the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions in its permitting decisions six weeks after the deadline for non-budget bills. HB 971 was created to save a $250 million natural gas power plant being built along the Yellowstone River. Last month, a state judge ruled that Montana officials failed to adequately consider the 23 million tons of planet-warming greenhouse gases that the project would emit over several decades. Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) signed HB 971 into law last week.
- Gov. Gianforte also signed SB 228 into law earlier this month, forbidding local governments from setting conditions for anything fossil fuel related. The law is extremely broad, including all “vehicles, vessels, tools, or commercial and residential appliances that burn or transport petroleum fuels.”
- Gov. Gianforte signed SB 208 into law the same day, prohibiting local governments from enacting programs to encourage existing and new buildings to use renewable energy like solar power.
- Another bill, HB 241 was passed by both chambers and sent to Gianforte for his signature. HB 241 bans local governments from requiring that new construction be wired for solar panels or electric cars.
Texas lawmakers have taken aim at the state's renewable energy sector, passing numerous bills in the Senate that would fund fossil fuels and restrict wind and solar energy.
- Senate Bill 6 proposes to allocate $10 billion to build new natural gas power plants that would be activated during emergencies (like the 2021 winter storm). However, an additional estimate places the cost at about $7 billion higher. The bill would also create a low-interest loan program for the construction of new gas plants.
- Senate Bill 7 would create a financial incentive to encourage the private development of natural gas power plants and force wind and solar energy companies to pay “ancillary services” fees.
- Senate Bill 1287 would require power generators in certain circumstances to pay for some of the transmission costs to connect to the grid, a move that’s targeted at renewable energy developers who build far away from the grid.
- Senate Bill 2014 removes the requirement that power providers purchase renewable energy credits (created decades ago to incentivize renewable energy development).

2023.05.16 00:49 nocturnal_numbness Missing man since 2005
A man named Eric Brett went missing December 21, 2005. He was seen leaving the hospital for (what was assumed) a cigarette break. He had been admitted for mental health issues. On Christmas Eve, a healthcare worker reported seeing him at a local mall, and he hasn’t been seen or heard from since. No bank accounts were accessed, no family or friends were contacted. The last new article posted on him was in 2013, 7 years after his disappearance. I grew up seeing him in church as a kid, and had heard from my parents he used to be super smart, like fancy scientist level smart, and had sustained a TBI at some point years prior; I had only ever known him as having his disability so it was a very long time ago. I don’t know anything more than that. He’s not listed on Charley’s Project or anything. His mother passed away last year. Her obit said he was deceased but my guess is that’s what they wrote because there has never been any obituary printed for this man confirming his passing, and it’s common in a lot of church circles to just go with whatever answer brings them comfort.
